In life's intricate maze, we often find ourselves caught in the routine.. We stick to jobs we've held for ages, not because they bring us joy, but simply because they've become part of our comfort zone. The fear of change, the allure of job security, and the weight of responsibilities conspire to keep us shackled to the familiar, even when it no longer resonates with our passions. How many of us can honestly say that we find genuine joy in what we do, day in and day out? How many of us can attest that we're not just caught in a monotonous cycle but rather living a fulfilling journey?

If your answer is a yes, you are indeed lucky. Some of you may not have the privilege to gamble, but those of you can; you have no excuse. One of the most significant barriers to change is the fear of failure, and of course, societal pressure plays its part, whispering doubts into our ears: What will others think? Will this unconventional decision be accepted? But it's vital to remember that the journey to fulfillment is not paved with others' opinions; our dreams and aspirations are carved. I believe there is never a wrong time to do the right thing, and actor Abhishek Bachchan, on our cover, shares that in his interview with Hashtag. THE PRODUCER IN ME

ALWAYS CONFLICTS BETWEEN ME AS AN ACTOR AND A PRODUCER

Abhishek Bachchan

Abhishek Bachchan delivers an inspirational portrayal as a coach in Ghoomer, a compelling sports drama that shows the journey of an amputee female cricketer, portrayed by Saiyami Kher. The film, directed by R. Balki, has garnered extensive acclaim for its inspiring narrative. This sports drama instils the determination to conquer obstacles and emerge victorious despite life’s failures and setbacks.

Excerpts-

1)

On Sports:

As a sports lover and enthusiast, what were some things you had to learn or prepare for your role in Ghoomer?

I had to learn to bowl with my left hand. Although I am a lefty, I play sports with my right hand and bat or bowl with my right hand. But in the film, I played as a left-hand bowler, so I had to learn how to spin and bowl with my left hand. I learned from my dear friend Rohan Gavaskar, a left-arm bowler who gave me many tips.

Who’s bowling style is your favourite?

I am a Mumbai Indian fan and always loved [Lasith] Malinga.

Have you ever thought about pursuing a career in sports?

Everybody in their schooling loves sports and feels that way. Basketball is my favourite sport; I used to play it in my school days.

You own the Jaipur Pink Panthers, a Kabaddi team, and a football team. How have you not done something on the Basketball front yet?

I would love to do something in Basketball as well. Hopefully, I will be starting it soon.

2)

On Career:

You have seen many ups and downs during your career. What did you feel when a film was successful and vice versa?

We should always work hard. We have become very materialistic nowadays. We should not wait for results after doing a film but continue to work harder. You cannot define success as achieving something material. Some films will be a hit, while some may not be. Hit or flop is not in your hand or control, so why should you even think about it. Today, I feel when I put my head on the pillow and fall asleep instantly, it is also a form of success. I may have done something good so I can sleep peacefully. I feel that the journey is the success, not the destination. If you think about our religion in spirituality, it has taught that the journey has to be successful. So, concentrate on that.

Why did Abhishek take a break after Houseful 3?

I wasn’t happy with the way I was working. It has nothing to do with the films I was doing. I felt that I was getting complacent as an actor. You are not really workin hard if all the movies like Dhoom, Happy New Year and Houseful are becoming hits and are making great money.I felt I was just going along and had to become more responsible. After watching my work, I stopped before it went on

and on. It is always better to know the problem halfway through and solve it.

Apart from being an actor and producer, Abhishek Bachchan is a sports enthusiast and owns a Kabaddi and football team. In a candid rendezvous with Lipika Varma, he talks about his love for sports, the ups and downs of his career, his vision as a producer, and the Bachchan family.
'' ''

Given an opportunity to choose between producing a film and acting, what would you choose?

I am not an active producer. The producer in me always conflicts between me as an actor and a producer. I would prefer being in front of the cameras.

How happy does Abhishek feel about this good career phase of his?

I am thankful and happy that I am working. You are always lucky if, as an actor, you have employment. There are many actors who are much more talented and might be looking for work. I should be happy and respect it, as well as work even harder.

Have you been unkind to yourself?

Yes, I feel your profession demands that. You put your soul out there in front of the world, which is not an easy job.

How do you take criticism?

You feel bad when your raw emotions are not appreciated, so we get defensive, possibly. Waise mujhe criticism kharab nahi lagti.

You are one of the most brilliant producers. Your first film, Paa, did well, and your Marathi film also clicked at the B.O. Ghoomer looks promising, too. Will this do well too?

Yes, I have produced a Marathi film and will do so again. I may say that I am lucky, and it’s all because of the director. I also feel it’s all about being there at the right time and at the right place.

Would you elaborate on your vision as a producer and also your learning from Balki?

Our sensibilities match a lot. I feel it’s a natural progression. Whatever your subject matter is, you have to be proud of it.

3] As a producer:

RARKPK has brought smiles to the faces of Bollywood professionals. What is your reaction to [Maa] Jaya Bachchan?

I can’t react to her as an actor. Mere liye wo maa hai…it’s an emotion. Mere pariwar mein jitne bhi actors hai –Aishwarya and Dad, I can look up to them as actors. With maa, I can’t think or react; it’s just that emotion; she is my mother.

How does Amitji [Amitabh Bachchan] guide you?

Dad has never given me any guidance as such. He allows me to work and comments whatever he feels after watching my work. My parents have given me the freedom to do whatever I feel like doing. They never forced me to do anything. Yes, he appreciated my films. From his appreciation, I can only hope I am doing good work.

Does his [Big B] appreciation increase your sense of responsibility towards your work?

Definitely, when anybody recognizes your work and appreciation flows up, your responsibilities increase manifold. You work for your audiences, and their recognition is essential.

Does Aaradhya have any plans to tread on the path of her parents and grandparents?

Let her enjoy her childhood; she’s just 11 years old.

4) On the Personal front- Family and Big B:

Culinary Wanderlust

In the dynamic world where food, travel, and culture converge, Aashritha Daggubati shines as a vibrant storyteller, weaving a tapestry of flavours, experiences, and connections. The elder daughter of Venkatesh Daggubati, she is the force behind Infinity Platter and Infinity Retreat a venture that goes beyond gastronomy; they represent a genuine quest to foster community, celebrate diversity, and redefine personal success. Surabhi Goel talks to her about her culinary odyssey.

1. What led you to create ‘Infinity Platter’ and embark on a journey of exploring the world through food?

‘Infinity Platter’ was born from the deeply ingrained significance of food, influenced by my family's passion for gastronomy. Growing up, cherished memories were woven around the dining table, where the joy of sharing delectable meals with my father, uncle, and dad shaped my love for culinary experiences. As I ventured into travel, I noticed how food held a universal language that transcended boundaries, bringing people together through shared moments of delight and conversation.

This realization led me to document my explorations, recognizing that the flavours of a destination could unlock its culture, history, and community dynamics. With each dish, I began uncovering a holistic approach to understanding the essence of a place, from family traditions to the land's bounty.

2. Could you share the inception story of ‘Infinity Platter’ and how the idea took shape?

As I settled into Barcelona postwedding, I started documenting the local food, culture, and travel

experiences, which fuelled the ‘Infinity Platter.’ This platform became a space where I could intertwine my passion for food and exploration, sharing stories that transcend borders and connect people through the universal language of cuisine.

The channel's genesis emerged from a keen observation during my travels – the prevalence of food photos on platforms like Instagram. Inspired by this trend, I decided to share my culinary experiences through pictures and videos despite my shyness. The positive response from my audience encouraged me to continue, leading to the creation of ‘Infinity Platter.’

3. As ‘Infinity Platter’ evolved from an idea to a brand, what key milestones marked its progress?

The evolution of it was driven by a simple yet powerful principle: finding happiness in what I do. This guiding light ensured that my dedication and effort remained wholehearted, resulting in impactful content that resonated with my audience. As the quality of my work improved, so did the connection with my community, leading to milestones that marked the journey from concept to a meaningful endeavour.

INDIA 13 September 2023

WITH EACH DISH, I BEGAN UNCOVERING A HOLISTIC APPROACH TO UNDERSTANDING THE ESSENCE OF A PLACE, FROM FAMILY TRADITIONS TO THE LAND'S BOUNTY.

4. Tell us how the channel name originated and its alignment with your mission.

The name ‘Infinity Platter’ has its roots in my spiritual journey and a profound connection with the concept of infinity. Having practiced meditation since a young age, the word infinity holds immense significance, symbolizing the boundless nature of life's possibilities. This notion aligns seamlessly with my mission, as my exploration through food and travel is an ever-expanding journey. Beyond just food, it represents the idea of a plate that can hold infinite experiences, passions, and connections. The name was conceived in collaboration with my cousin, and it captures the essence of limitless exploration and the exciting pursuit of new horizons that life constantly offers.

5. How do you curate the diverse culinary experiences' Infinity Platter offers, and how do you ensure they resonate with your audience?

The curation of diverse culinary experiences on ‘Infinity Platter’ is a symbiotic process between myself and my audience. By authentically

sharing my journey and ideas, I attract followers who resonate with my values and perspective. Over time, this mutual understanding has grown stronger, allowing me to gauge their preferences. This insight guides my content choices, ensuring that each video or photograph holds value and entertainment for them. The harmonious connection between my passion and their appreciation creates a fulfilling cycle, encouraging me to continually offer experiences that align with their interests and bring joy to both sides.

6. Could you narrate a memorable food journey presented on ‘Infinity Platter’ that impacted your audience?

One memorable food journey that left a lasting impact was when I ventured back to India and delved into showcasing soulful homemade dishes. Sharing videos featuring my grandmother's traditional recipes struck a chord with my audience. The connection to these comfort foods resonated deeply, and the experience of learning new recipes from my Amma while filming together added a fun and heart-warming touch. Another unforgettable journey took me to the Pyrenees in Barcelona, where I

foraged wild mushrooms from the forest and transformed them into a mouth-watering mushroom risotto. The uniqueness of the experience and the delicious outcome captivated my audience and me, making it a cherished memory on the platform.

7. Looking ahead, what is your vision for the future of ‘Infinity Platter,’ and are there any exciting projects or expansions on the horizon?

After a brief hiatus, I'm diving back into content creation with a fresh perspective. There's a wealth of captivating YouTube videos on the horizon, promising unique experiences and narratives that I'm thrilled to share. On top of that, ‘Infinity Platter’ is expanding into ‘Infinity Retreat,’ a specially curated weeklong venture for women. I've already hosted the first retreat in Barcelona, with the second just around the corner. These retreats focus on mindfulness, food, adventure, travel, and community-building, offering a holistic vacation experience that fosters connections, creativity, and fun. This initiative aligns with my passion for bringing people together through shared experiences, and it's a journey I plan to continue, with plans for more retreats in the coming years, including the possibility of hosting one in India in September. It's an exciting time, and I'm eager to embrace all the opportunities.

8. Coming from the film industry, the allure of success doesn't hold the same excitement. Could you expand on this perspective?

Coming from the film industry, I've developed a unique perspective on success. While I greatly respect the industry, I've never aspired to be on the big screen. What drives me is the pursuit of genuine passion and happiness. I believe that even if a project offers significant monetary rewards, I won't pursue it if it doesn't align with my true calling. Success is synonymous with joy – it's about being content and fulfilled in what I do. While the possibility of being in front of the big screen isn't off the table, my primary focus remains on pursuing what brings me joy, as that is the ultimate measure of success.

Quick takes-

1. Apart from food and travel, what other activities excite you?

Beyond food and travel, I find excitement in activities that connect me with nature and the serenity it offers. Exploring wildlife and engaging in scuba diving provides a deep sense of peace and tranquillity. Meditation is an integral part of my life, reflecting my spiritual values and their significance.

2. What helps you de-stress when not working?

I don't tend to stress much in life. I approach everything with passion and dedication, giving my best effort. Once I've given my all, I let go and trust that things will unfold as they should. This mind-set helps me stay calm and focused, leaving little need for destressing activities. But when I’m not working, I like to go hiking, go to the beach, watch food shows, go out for a nice meal & hang out with friends.

3. Which is your favourite cuisine and favourite travel destination?

I have two favourite cuisines: Japanese and Italian. Choosing between them is tough since I love both. As for travel, my preferences have shifted towards nature and wildlife. I'm drawn to destinations that offer those experiences and excited to explore more of the world's natural wonders.

4. Are you a movie enthusiast? Could you share the title of one of your favourite films?

I wouldn't call myself a movie enthusiast; I only watch my Baba and Rana's movies otherwise, but I do have a few favourites. Two films that have fascinated me are Interstellar and Inception. I'm drawn to movies that provoke more profound thought and explore concepts beyond our current understanding, as they make me ponder about life and the unknown.

NURTURING DREAMS WITH MENTORSHIP

In law enforcement, Mahesh Bhagwat, the Additional Director General of Police (CID) in Telangana, has made an indelible mark, not only as a dedicated police officer but also as a remarkable mentor for civil services aspirants. His journey from being a cop to a mentor is an inspiring tale of dedication, selflessness, and the pursuit of knowledge. In an exclusive Surabhi Goel uncovers his evolution from DGP to mentor, inspiring aspiring law enforcement candidates.

JOURNEY

Mahesh Bhagwat's passion for civil services was apparent even before he formally joined the police force. He began mentoring candidates preparing for police sub-inspector and Group One exams, both as a way to stay connected with the syllabus and to earn while he learned. This journey began in the 1990s and speaks volumes about his commitment to continuous learning and community service.

After clearing the civil services exam in 1995, Mahesh Bhagwat's engagement with mentoring took a brief hiatus. However, around 2008, students from Pune, Maharashtra, seeking insight into naxalism and other pertinent issues, approached him for guidance. Leveraging the power of technology, he harnessed WhatsApp groups to connect with students and provide them

Mahesh Muralidhar Bhagwat

with comprehensive mentorship. Over time, this humble initiative grew into a national platform. Starting with students from Maharashtra, the mentorship expanded to cover candidates from Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, and eventually all over India. What began as support for IAS, IPS, and civil services evolved into Indian Forest Services and Central Armed Police Force Assistant Commandant exams. The program operates through WhatsApp groups and online sessions on Zoom, facilitated by a dedicated team of mentors from diverse backgrounds.

INDIA 17 September 2023

In this year's 2022 and 2023 civil services exams, 187 candidates were mentored, with an impressive 25 making it to the top 100. Similarly, in the Indian Forest Service, out of 147 selected candidates, 72 were mentored by Mahesh Bhagwat's team. The Central Armed Police Force exams also witnessed resounding success, with All India Toppers among the mentored candidates.

Mahesh Bhagwat's story is a testament to the power of mentorship and community-driven success in an age where success is often measured individually. Through his dedication, he showcases that excellence achieved is best shared, and every success story has the potential to ignite countless others.

MENTOR’S PATHWAY

He engages candidates effectively in his approach, resulting in a growing number of participants. Currently, two distinct WhatsApp groups are dedicated to interview preparation. Out of 187 successful candidates, around 400 others are set to attempt prelims, organized into separate groups. This organic network expands through word-of-mouth referrals without commercial promotions or public meetings. Candidates from regions like Jammu & Kashmir and the North East are joining. The ripple effect of qualified candidates referring others adds to the initiative's success, making students and mentors proud.

JUGGLING DUTIES

Matching their passion with their profession, this individual seamlessly incorporates newspaper reading into their mornings.

Strategically analyzing publications like The Hindu and The Indian Express, they identify crucial exam-related topics. Four distinct groups are facilitating this process, encompassing exam participants such as the Indian Forest Service and CPF. Their preparation remains informed and focused by consistently sharing newspaper insights and essential editorials. The guidance nexus says, “I am currently free as all the exams have concluded, but come December, I wonder how to pause my morning walk or other activities.”

This routine commitment involves dedicating around an hour each morning to dissect newspapers for crucial content. As the interview phase approaches, a heightened investment of time is required. They extend

their efforts into the weekends and evenings, ensuring candidates receive personalized attention. Conversations with candidates, spanning approximately 45 minutes, are tailored to their backgrounds, education, optional subjects, and extracurricular activities. Exploring experiences, employment history, and exam preferences, these discussions lay the foundation for anticipating interview questions. By offering a

customized question bank, candidates gain the confidence to tackle expected questions, often rooted in their submitted biodata. A five-member interview panel, including the chairman, bolsters this comprehensive approach. Through these preparations, candidates are equipped to articulate themselves confidently and succinctly during interviews.

TRAITS FOR SUCCESS IN LAW & CIVIL

• Civil services aspirants must embody perseverance, a crucial trait in this marathon-like pursuit. Candidates aged up to 32 (open category), 35 (OBC), and 37 (SC/ ST) have from 21 to 37 years to appear for the exam, with 6, 9, and unlimited attempts, respectively. It's a journey of ups and downs –one year for prelims, another for mains, and another for interviews. The marks from these stages coalesce, defining your rank and future.

• Perseverance is vital, with the understanding that success isn't handed out on a platter. Elevators don't lead to triumph; it's a step-by-step ascent. The right resources, mentorship, and a focused approach are crucial. Yet, the syllabus is extensive; hence, strategic preparation matters. Review past questions, understand the syllabus trends, and manage time effectively.

• During the exam, 6 hours of writing can be a challenge. Regular writing practice is vital in combating issues like writer's cramps.

• Reading newspapers and watching standard news segments daily aids in staying current. Amidst the sea of distractions, staying focused is critical, and leveraging the correct methods is essential. Maintaining commitment, focus, and a consistent routine is paramount to all those immersed in the civil services journey.

GUIDING CAREER TRAJECTORIES BY THE MENTOR QUICK

One should begin by recognizing their strengths and weaknesses and addressing the latter under mentorship guidance. Enhancing skills, finding the right resources, and adopting effective study methodologies form essential components. If diligent efforts don't yield desired results, having a backup plan is crucial, particularly considering the age factor. Understanding challenges, financial considerations, and family support's role is paramount to ensure a wellrounded approach.

Besides mentoring and catching criminals, what else excites you?

I am fond of culture, especially drama, theatre, and musical programs. Additionally, I enjoy connecting and networking with friends from both college and school. We continue to maintain our friendships, regularly meeting up and supporting one another every year.

Outside of work, what do you find helps you unwind and destress?

Engaging in social activities has been a passion of mine from the start. It's fulfilling to contribute to the community and offer help whenever possible.

The success stories emanate from a dedicated emphasis on interview mentoring, providing extensive assistance to candidates facing challenges. A standout incident from 2020 illustrates this commitment when a candidate, while in Delhi for an interview, contracted COVID-19. Swift action through local contacts facilitated hospitalization, eventually leading to a qualification. Another scenario featured an IIT Bombay alumnus confronting severe health complications during the interview. A collective effort between alumni and the mentorship program rallied substantial funds—approximately 1 lakh Rs—for his 120-day hospital stay, during which he was airlifted from Mumbai to Hyderabad's KIMS hospital for treatment. Despite

As an additional DGP, what health objectives do you pursue to motivate others?

I set a personal example by adhering to schedules and specific guidelines. This clarity ensures a structured approach. For those facing challenges, I aid in overcoming difficulties. My leadership philosophy involves leading by example.

Are you a fan of traveling? If so, what's your preferred travel destination?

I have an excellent affinity for travel, often indulging in tourism for around 15-20 days each year, both within the country and abroad. The United States and Europe hold a special place for me among the numerous travel destinations.

Makeup Tips by Niyati Kothari:

• When it comes to makeup application, one common mistake to avoid is using the wrong foundation shade, as it can result in an unnatural appearance. To achieve a flawless minimalist look, follow these pointers: focus on enhancing your natural features instead of masking them, and opt for a tinted moisturizer or lightweight foundation for sheer coverage.

• To find the perfect foundation shade for your skin tone, consider these tips: determine your undertone (cool, warm, or neutral) to guide your shade selection, test foundation shades on your jawline or wrist in natural light, choose a shade that seamlessly blends into your skin, and if needed, seek assistance from a makeup artist experienced with a diverse clientele.

• Building a well-rounded makeup collection is essential, and here are the must-have products: foundation or tinted moisturizer, concealer, mascara, lip balm or lipstick, and blush or bronzer.

• For a quick and radiant complexion, try this makeup hack: mix a small amount of liquid highlighter with your foundation or moisturizer before applying it. This simple trick adds a subtle luminosity, resulting in a glowing and healthy-looking complexion.

1. What is your favourite makeup product or brand?

My favourite makeup brands are Charlotte Tilbury and Pat McGrath. I adore Charlotte Tilbury for their skin products, and Pat McGrath for their stunning eyeshadows.

2. What are your self-care routines to unwind and recharge?

I enjoy indulging in Hydra facial treatments and following a nightly skincare routine to recharge and pamper myself.

3. Which Bollywood celebrity is your favourite and who would you love to collaborate with?

I would choose Alia Bhatt as my preferred Bollywood celebrity to collaborate with because I admire her makeup style and it aligns with my work as a makeup artist.

4. Share a challenging celebrity look you've created as a makeup artist.

Recently, I took on the challenging task of creating a character look for Keerthy Suresh in the movie Dashera

5. What non-professional activity brings you joy and fulfilment?

Kumar, tell us about your fitness journey and how you become a celebrity trainer.

I was always passionate about fitness and started working out when I was 13. I am an engineer but I didn’t want to spend my life at a desk job. I drifted to the fitness world, moved abroad, and got educated and certified in fitness. Then, I moved back to India and started training people. I have trained Allu Arjun, Mahesh Babu, Jr. NTR, and Kalyan Ram. I treat every client the same, being a celebrity does not make a difference in my coaching approach.

What is the best way to achieve a six-pack body?

A six-pack is just like any other muscle, you have to train for it, and your genetics determine how many abs you have. It is a two-way process. You must build muscle with core exercises and reduce overall body fat with proper nutrition for the abs to show. Coming to the exercises, one can choose to do sit-ups, rope crunches, planks, and leg raises, depending on their ability. Moving to nutrition, one must include 1.5-2x grams of protein per kg of body weight, derived from any vegetarian or non-vegetarian source based on personal preference. Chicken, fish, paneer, and lentils, just to name a few.

What are the three common mistakes that beginners must avoid?

1. Refrain from overtraining at the gym; more is not always better. Workout is one of the last factors in building muscle. Following proper nutrition, eating right, and getting adequate rest are more important.

2. Not eating right, beginners must prioritize eating the right mix of macros, protein, carbs, and fats and avoid eating junk and processed foods.

3. Beginners should learn the proper techniques to perform exercises and educate themselves about these techniques to prevent injuries. They must take the help of a qualified trainer to learn the exercises.

There is a lot of buzz around supplements. What is your take on them?

The word itself implies that it is a supplement to your diet. Firstly, one must ensure a healthy, balanced diet with the right mix of protein, carbs, and fats. However, considering the current lifestyles of many, specific vitamins like D and B12 might be deficient. Vitamin B12 is essential for heart health, brain functioning, and energy levels. Vitamin D is responsible for producing necessary hormones in the body. You can use multivitamins if you are deficient in these micro-nutrients.

takes: Quick

3) What keeps you motivated to work out regularly?

A: I have 25 years of experience training and helping people with their fitness goals. I have a lot of people that look up to me as an inspiration, young trainers and gymgoers consider me as their idol. This keeps me motivated to stay in shape. Also, I love working out.

NATURE'S NUTRIENT-PACKED Marvels

Due to their remarkable nutritional benefits, Tiger nuts, often called Cyperus Esculentus, have been making waves in the health and wellness scene. Despite their name, tiger nuts are not nuts at all. They are small tubers with a nutty, sweet flavor. These ancient superfoods have been consumed for centuries and have recently regained popularity due to their impressive health benefits. Dhanush Kumar delves into the world of tiger nuts and explores the excellent benefits they offer.

Rich in Fiber for Digestive Wellness

One of the standout benefits of tiger nuts is their high fiber content. Fiber is essential for maintaining a healthy digestive system, preventing constipation, and promoting regular bowel movements. Tiger nuts contain soluble and insoluble fiber, making them a fantastic natural remedy for various digestive issues.

Nutritional Powerhouse

Tiger nuts boast a rich nutritional profile, packed with vitamins, minerals, and healthy fats. These tiny tubers are a great source of Vitamin E, an antioxidant that helps protect cells from oxidative damage. Additionally, they provide a healthy dose of minerals such as magnesium, potassium, and phosphorous, which contribute to maintaining optimal muscle and nerve function and bone health.

INDIA 32 September 2023 TIGER NUTS:

Heart-Healthy Goodness

Gluten-Free Alternative

Gluten sensitivity is on the rise in the present day. Finding delicious gluten-free alternatives is crucial. Tiger nuts naturally fit the bill, offering a safe option for individuals with celiac disease or gluten intolerance. Their versatility makes them an ideal gluten-free baking ingredient, adding a nutty flavor and nutritional value to various recipes.

Nutrient-Dense Energy Source

Tiger nuts are an excellent choice for those seeking a natural energy boost. The carbohydrates in tiger nuts are primarily fiber and starch, providing a sustained release of energy without causing rapid spikes in blood sugar levels. This characteristic makes tiger nuts a perfect snack for maintaining energy levels throughout the day.

DON'T WAIT, MASTURBATE

Embracing the Importance of Self-Pleasure

In a world that often shrouds discussions around sexuality in taboo and secrecy, it is vital to continuously work towards breaking those barriers and fostering open conversations about a natural and personal aspect of human experience. Masturbation, beyond its playful connotations, is a celebration of self-discovery, self-care, and self-pleasure. Emphasizing the importance of embracing and understanding one's body in a positive and empowering way offers remarkable advantages.

Masturbation, often considered a private act entangled in layers of bias and taboo, is an integral part of human sexuality. It is a natural and instinctive form of self-exploration that allows individuals to connect with their bodies,

experience pleasure, and learn about their unique desires and preferences. Yet, despite its universality, masturbation continues to be surrounded by stigma and misinformation. As young individuals, we must challenge these misconceptions, promote sexual well-being, and foster a healthy attitude toward selfpleasure.

There are various reasons why self-pleasure should be

celebrated rather than shamed, considering its positive impact on physical and mental health and its role in fostering body positivity and empowerment. Let us embark on a journey of self-discovery, self-acceptance, and self-love through this article, breaking down the walls of silence and taboo. Together, we can create a world where individuals feel empowered to embrace their own unique sexual identities and experiences.

Mehak Walia in conversation with Dr Meenakshi Ahuja, Senior Director of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Fortis La Femme and the academic secretary for Delhi Gynecology Forum. Dr Meenakshi Ahuja

To shed more light, we spoke to Dr Meenakshi Ahuja, the Senior Director of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Fortis La Femme and the academic secretary for the Delhi Gynecology Forum. Dr Ahuja, a non-judgmental gynecologist, has passionately spoken about women's health and sexuality at various forums. Explaining the importance of self-pleasure, she said, “Masturbation is a normal and healthy practice in many living things, not just humans. Even among humans, it’s not recent, and its practice is described even in our most ancient texts. The Kama Sutra describes in great detail self-pleasure for men and women. Masturbation is a healthy and normal human instinct in both men and women and should be accepted as such. It is a healthy and safe way to achieve sexual gratification. Many scientific studies have shown the importance of regular orgasms for both men and women- Masturbation helps achieve this without the chances of getting an unwanted pregnancy or an STI. Of course, an obsession with it or too much of anything is never good, but repressing or ignoring sexual urges can do much more harm to the mind and body.”

While discussing the great options available for everyone to explore the realm of self-pleasure, she added, “The good thing today is that information is openly available for anyone seeking masturbation. There are many ways to pleasure oneself, and devices to enhance pleasure

are available online and offline. So using your fingers, a partner’s hand or a toy or device to achieve orgasm is very normal. Remember, these are sensitive parts. Don’t be too rough on yourself. You may like to use a gel or pleasure enhancer not to hurt yourself.”

She also addressed the shame associated with masturbation these days as she exclaimed, “Masturbation is a normal practice among many living things, not just humans. It is as natural as breathing and eating!”

INDIA 36 September 2023
" "
Masturbation is a normal and healthy practice in many living things, not just humans. Even among humans, it’s not recent, and its practice is described even in our most ancient texts

She added, “As humans, we should practice masturbation in a safe and private space. Societal norms change from time to time. Perhaps today's norms, unfortunately, do not allow these conversations to be held out in the open like I believe they should be, and some ignorant people might mock the practice in others because they don't appreciate the normalcy of this practice. But, in truth, masturbation is nothing to be ashamed of. As a doctor, I know this is widely practiced in India by girls, boys, men, and women of all ages, encouragingly so by more females than males. Medically speaking, masturbation is safe at any age. It improves the blood supply to the vagina and the male organs, thus helping maintain one's sexual health. It is safer than unprotected sex, as there is no risk of infection or unwanted pregnancy. It is widely established that an orgasm achieved either with a partner or via self-help releases dopamine, oxytocin, and other mood enhancers, also called happy hormones, so it can help counter depression and helps in achieving restful sleep.”

She believes that slowly and steadily, a change occurs in the general attitude towards masturbation. She adds, with a smile, “Societal norms are changing, and the conversation around masturbation among males is quite normalized now. You see it talked about openly on OTT platforms, books, and social media. As far as females are concerned, women have no reason to be denied sexual pleasure if they seek it. We need to normalize further the conversation to include and accept masturbation by girls and women to help create a more knowledgeable, inclusive society.”

From the opinion of expert medical professionals to various ancient texts that celebrate the art of self-pleasure, it is undeniable that masturbation has played a prominent role in shaping human sexuality and desire throughout the ages. Despite the stigma in the conversation regarding masturbation, it is apparent that the younger generation is slowly and steadily trying to break the barriers of shame and taboo surrounding the desire to explore one's body. So, join the mission, and don’t wait, masturbate- discover yourself and discover what pleasure signifies for your body and embrace whatever makes you feel unapologetically and unashamedly sexy.

DOPAMINE DÉCOR THE FEEL-GOOD DÉCOR TREND

Dopamine décor is the cautious use of vibrant colours and contrasts in your home through upholstery, rugs, cushion covers, paintings, wallpaper, photographs, and so much more to boost energy levels and instil a sense of joie de vivre. It is the most jubilant interior trend of recent times, bringing together an original and planned curation of your living spaces with eclectic and fun décor. Shruti Tomar gets designers to delve into the dopamine décor trend that’s all about spreading the happy vibe.

WHAT IS DOPAMINE DÉCOR?

“The dopamine decor style is very open-ended and includes anything that makes one feel happy, so every time one steps into their space, one experiences a dopamine rush. The trend is named after the feel-good neurotransmitter dopamine and is all about instilling a sense of warmth and happiness,” explains Aarti Dhariwal, Founder and Design Head of Stories with AD, Gurgaon.

Sarabjit Singh, Founder & Architectural Designer of Villa Ortiga, New Delhi, takes the conversation further: "Dopamine decor involves

creating a design experience that brings pleasure by using colours, textures, and whimsical designs. The decor scheme is about spaces that make one happy and encourage a positive atmosphere. The primary goal is to create an environment that uplifts the mood and enhances the overall well-being of its inhabitants. It's about using design elements to trigger the release of dopamine, a neurotransmitter associated with feelings of reward and pleasure.”

You could achieve this look through a wallpaper that evokes childhood memories or a reupholster a vintage chair gifted by a grandparent in vivid hues.

DOPAMINE DECORATING

Alternatively, Shivani Ajmera and Disha Bhavsar, the Founders of Quirk Studio, Mumbai, tell us that, ultimately, this trend revolves around selecting decorative accents and objects that truly make one happy. It's a meticulous fusion of opulent textures, lavish materials, and artful design, all mindfully orchestrated to elicit an emotional response. Yet, this reaction remains highly personal; these cohesive designs must resonate with your peculiar tastes, where every element can engage the senses, creating an environment that radiates joy and satisfaction. These personal touchstones can be used as guiding principles for a well-curated dopamine decor.

“When it comes to interior design, dopamine décor translates into bright pops of colours and patterns that bring about the happiness quotient in any space. Different bright shades are used to render the spaces in exciting tones with the help of furniture pieces like console tables, credenza or end tables, wall paint, curtains, cushions, rugs, artworks, etc.,” explains Devika Khosla, Creative Director of The Works Interiors, New Delhi. It may sound chaotic to the layman’s ears, but when it all comes together, it is visually pleasing.

DOPAMINE VS. KITSCH

However, do not confuse dopamine with kitsch. “While dopamine décor revolves around curated luxury and sensory delight, kitsch embraces a purposefully eccentric and frequently comical fusion of styles and items,” says Disha Bhavsar. Devika Khosla, though, is of the opinion that even though dopamine decor is perceived as one of the latest trends in interior design, she believes it is a derivative of the kitsch style of decor. “Like the kitsch decor, it juxtaposes the vintage with bold patterns or bright colours to uplift the space through distinct and sometimes contrasting elements. Adding patterns and textures to an already bright space enlivens it and keeps the energy spruced up,” explains Devika.

DOPAMINE DÉCOR EMPLOYS REUSE AND SUSTAINABILITY

We all know sustainability is the order of the day. Likewise, with dopamine décor, there’s a substantial

reuse and sustainability angle. Aarti Dhariwal expands on this angle, “Yes, upcycling existing items that one already has and being mindful by shopping for second-hand or vintage furniture and décor. For example, you could buy a chair from a thrift store and reupholster it with a printed fabric, paint a vintage chest in a bright colour to add a pop to the room, or turn a wooden crate into a coffee table.” Sarabjit Singh adds to the conversation here, “One can embrace this trend by repurposing and upcycling furniture and decor items. Since there is an overlap of different styles and layering of different colours and materials, it is convenient to incorporate new and old decor to create a visually striking new look. This aligns with the growing awareness of environmental sustainability, making the trend visually appealing and environmentally responsible.”

Dopamine décor ideas

• Keep your furniture bold and distinctive, as well as fun and joyful.

• A mix of vintage pieces with modern furniture looks excellent in this style.

• Start small, introduce a print here, a bright upholstered piece of furniture in the corner, or go all out and commit wholly to pops of colours such as lemony yellows, fuchsias, or bright blues.

• When in doubt, think pink!

• Introduce geometry. Think stripes, arches, and curves as a constant feature in furniture, and fabric patterns can add softness and make a statement.

• Use elements of sentimental value, i.e., family photos, travel souvenirs, childhood books, or vintage collections.

Embracing Exotic Pet Companions Beyond The Ordinary:

Some extraordinary creatures of nature have captured the hearts of pet enthusiasts seeking companionship beyond traditional pets. However, the realm of exotic pet ownership demands a bit of knowledge, and also there is huge responsibility upon your shoulders to take care of them.

Dhanush Kumar unveils the captivating facts you need to know about exotic pet ownership.

1) Legal Considerations

Before getting an exotic pet, you must know about the web of legalities. Each region possesses its own set of rules governing these fascinating creatures. Each city has its regulations, and some species may be prohibited, while others may require special permissions or licenses. You must be familiarized with the laws and regulations in your area to ensure that you can legally own an exotic pet.

2) Specialized Care

Exotic pets have specific needs that differ from traditional pets. Research the dietary requirements, habitat conditions, and environmental needs of the exotic pet you are considering. 3) Socialization and Training

Exotic pets, like any other animal, require socialization and training to thrive in a domestic environment. Research the social needs of the specific species you are interested in and find out if they can be trained or not. Building a bond with your exotic pet will contribute to its overall well-being and happiness.

4) Potential Health Risks:

Owning exotic pets carries certain health risks for both you and the animal. Some exotic species may have specific diseases that can be transmitted to humans, while others may have specific health issues. Regular veterinary check-ups and hygiene practices are essential to tackle these risks. Consult with a veterinarian who is experienced in exotic pets to ensure the health and safety of both you and your pet.

5) Financial Commitment

Exotic pets come with a higher price tag than traditional pets, and their maintenance can be costlier as well. In addition to the initial purchase cost, you need to factor in some expenses such as equipment, veterinary care, and high-quality food. Be prepared for these financial commitments before bringing an exotic pet into your life.

Ananya Pandey

Ananya Pandey and Ayushmann Khurrana’s film Dream Girl 2 was released recently. Amidst the vast box office roar of Gadar 2, films like OMG 2 and Dream Girl 2 could not get a bumper opening. Dream Girl 2 opened to a lukewarm response and failed to attract cinemagoers to the cinema halls. Ananya Pandey talks to Lipika Varma about being a star kid, her new film, and more.

Excerpts-

You entered as Chunky Pandey’s daughter, but now you are known as Ananya Pandey. How do you look at this transformation in your life?

I am grateful that I got so much love from the beginning. People have accepted me, and that is a huge compliment for me. My dad always told me you can belong in the industry, but there is no point if the audiences don’t like you. I have never liked to disappoint my fans and the audiences. I always want to give them better films.

Has Gheraiyaan changed you a lot?

Yes, I have changed a lot after the film. For my first few films, I was always anxious to be part of the big screen, and I would dance, sing songs, etc., and all this was partly to keep my anxieties high. Director Shakun [Batra] has taught me that as an actor, you must have a process, your contribution, and a strong sense of homework before you come on the sets. That advice has changed everything, for now, I have fallen in love with acting. In this film, something struck me honestly, and I hope these feelings continue in every film of mine.

“There is a way up with failure, as you have so much to learn. But with success, you find out the true character of the person. ”

How have you faced success and challenges?

My father always told me it’s more difficult to handle success than failures. There is a way up with failure, as you have so much to learn. But with success, you find out the true character of the person. One can become egoistic when they let that success go to their head, and that person can change a lot. I think I have tasted that kind of success in a small quantity. Whatever I have tasted, I do not take it too much to my head and stay grounded.

What advice does your dad give you?

My dad is a very hard-working person. He is also a versatile actor and tries everything. He always tells us to respect our work and be around good people.

The film Dream Girl 2 shows a male playing the role of a female. How was the experience?

There are many films like that. I have no complaints, more the women - the merrier it is! I love that female energy. It was fun, and I enjoyed it.

Your father has donned the character of a female in a film. What was your reaction? Have you ever liked any other actor who may have donned a female character in their films?

I was shocked when I saw my father’s photograph as a female character. I loved Ritesh Deshmukh in Apna Sapna Money Money. I liked the movie and found it hilarious. Riteish’s voice was so beautiful, and the attire he wore matched so much with his character. My dad was also part of the film.

Apka sapna money money nahi hai?

Papa ka sapna money money hai. He is not kanjoos, he is very good at handling finances.

“My dad always told me you can belong in the industry, but there is no point if the audiences don’t like you.”

Do you discuss screenplay with your father?

We discuss it at home, as my dad is an actor, and I am too, so we usually talk about films. Also, my younger sister is studying filmmaking in New York to become a director, and my mom is participating in a reality show. I usually give my parents scripts to read, but they never thrust their opinions on me. They always want me to decide for myself. They are smart; they don’t want to take the blame on themselves; if all my decisions go kaput, then the responsibility will not be on them. However, my father reads most of my scripts.

How did you react to watching your dad in films, being paired with different heroines?

I had seen Neelam at home, and when she was paired with my dad, I never felt bad about it. I would never watch many films where he would die because I would feel horrible. I watched a film when I was very young where he died in the end. No one told me he would die at the end of the film, and I was howling in the theatres because I thought films were real.

Love is important in life –do you agree, and what would you like to share?

Love is important in life, and love is special for my family, my audiences, and the special ones in my life. You guys have made stories about me, so you guys only decide and reveal. [laughs]

What qualities of your father would you like to see in your husband?

As chilled out as he looks and is funny, he has been a solid support to my mother. He is like the best friend to my mom. He is also very handsome. So, I would prefer to see all these qualities in my husband.

You are very close to Shahrukh Khan. What response did you receive from him after the release of the trailer?

I met him, and he said he loved the trailer and was very happy watching it. He is also looking forward to watching the film.

Suhana is also planning to debut in the industry, being her best friend; what is your reaction?

We have always seen this dream together. I am happy everyone’s dreams are coming true. Shanaya’s [Kapoor] film has also started. I have seen them and am waiting for the world to see them.

Any particular role you wish to do?

I would love to do a film with classical dancing and action to perform. I want to play a kathak dancer or a sitar player.

Also, do you wish to reprise any biopic on the celluloid?

I would love to play the actors from the 50s and the 60s - Waheeda Rahman and Mala Sinha. I would love to work with SLB and hope to work with him soon.

On replacing Nushrratt BharucchaNushrratt was terrific in the first part of the film. This was the decision made by the makers of the film. I think the story has changed, and the characters have changed. I am looking forward to watching her in Akelli.
