"I have decided, not to do any villain roles at least for a few years."

Vijay Sethupathi INDIA INDIA’S FIRST INTERACTIVE MAGAZINE

8 December 2023

Hailing from Chennai, Vijay Sethupathi found his way into acting serendipitously, seeking an escape from his NRI accountant job in Dubai and taking on various odd jobs, such as a cashier at a food joint and a phone booth operator. Although he may have initially entered the cinema industry out of boredom, today he stands as a force to reckon with. Having featured in over 50 films and having won three national awards for his acting, he has made a significant contribution to Tamil, Hindi, Malayalam, and Telugu cinema. At the 54th International Film Festival of India (IFFI) in Goa, Sethupathi shared insights into his diverse journey. In 2023 alone, his versatility shone as he portrayed a corrupt cop in "Farzi" and a formidable villain in "Pathaan," contributing to its 1100-crore success. His notable roles as a supervillain in films like 'Master,' 'Vikram Vedha,' 'Vikram,' 'Jawan,' and 'Petta' have earned him acclaim. Set to make history, his forthcoming movie "Gandhi Talks" is poised to be the first silent film screened at IFFI Goa in 2023. Directed by Kishor P. Balekar and featuring music by Academy Award-winning composer A.R. Rahman, Vijay Sethupathi discusses his film, career, and more in an engaging conversation with Lipika Varma.

ExcerptsYou are known for playing action and romantic roles; how challenging was this silent role for you? Where is the challenge- I wouldn’t know! I didn’t choose the film because it is a silent film. I chose the film because I wanted to do something new. It’s a beautiful film, and I liked and believed in the story. I tried to communicate to the best of my ability by showing emotions and through silent efforts. I try my best to perform well in every film.

You are at the extreme peak of your successful career, taking the risk of doing this silent film. What would you like to say? The risk is there with every film. With every film, we always wait for the people's reactions; this will never change.

Would the action-packed dialogue of Vijay Sethupathi that you have served go missing with this out-ofthe-box film? I think there is nothing out of the box. We make films to return the money to the producers who believe in us. I don’t want any appreciation for my work. We always try to bring the audiences into the theatres; that’s our responsibility. ''

You have been appreciated on the big screen and have also created a niche for yourself on the OTT. I feel thrilled to be appreciated, but we are just storytellers. I don’t find any difference when we watch films, whether on the big or small screen. We just tell stories and play different characters.

Have you also been loved by Hindi audiences? I see the whole world as one country; everyone is the audience. We watch all kinds of films, whether made in India or any part of the globe. If the film is good, everyone would love to watch that film. That’s what happened during the lockdown phase. Everybody was asking

each other –Have you watched this or that film? We also kept recommending good films to watch.

Is it true that you want to take a break from playing antagonist roles in films? There are restrictions when I play a villain. They control me so much to make sure I don’t take overpower the protagonist and some things go in the editing also. So slowly it is happening and I am confused and worried if I should do it or not. So I have decided, not to do any villain roles at least for a few years.

What makes film festivals so crucial to all cinema lovers and filmmakers?

Cinema is a very beautiful language. It allows creative people to introduce their cultures and experience worldwide cultures. Cinema has emotions and tells everyone how to treat people [Human beings]. It's a wonderful medium. I am thrilled and blessed to be a part of this industry, and working in this medium gives me immense happiness. It’s been a long time since I attended the film festival. I am coming here for the first time, and that too for IFFI; it feels great. My silent film, “Gandhi Talks,” will be shown here. I am happy about that as well.

AAHWAHAN FOUNDATION: Empowering and Transforming India with One Trailblazing Initiative at a Time Mehak Walia in conversation with Aahwahan Foundation, an NGO that is involved in promoting the welfare of people and driving the beauty of change with the power of their work.

In the vast tapestry of India, where myriad challenges intertwine with the hopes and dreams of millions, the Aahwahan Foundation stands as a beacon of transformative change. This Pan-India organization has orchestrated a symphony of initiatives that address critical issues in education, healthcare, women empowerment, community development, and environmental sustainability. Braja Kishore Pradhan, the founder of this incredibly generous organization, exclaimed, “Aahwahan started as a mission to make the world a better place for us all. We work on five segments: Environment & sustainability, community living, women empowerment, education and health. In farming, which is the backbone of our country, Aahwahan has empowered more than 2 lakh farmers with its initiatives and helped them receive good returns. bring about change. Only collective effort can bring about change, which we are committed to."

THEIR EDUCATION INITIATIVES: At the heart of Aahwahan Foundation's mission is the commitment to reshaping the educational landscape, ensuring no child is left behind. The ‘Education on Wheels’ program exemplifies this dedication. In Karnataka, the foundation's mobile academic unit traverses diverse locations, bringing quality education to the doorsteps of underprivileged students. This innovative initiative is not merely a van; it's a moving classroom with a biology, chemistry, physics, maths, computer, robotics, and digital library. Students not only gain theoretical knowledge but also experience practical hands-on learning. The van provides access to expert teachers through an interactive panel, facilitating personalized guidance. This initiative extends beyond conventional classroom learning, encompassing vocational

training, guidance, and personality development. The goal is ambitious yet impactful — to prepare students for exams like JEE, NEET, and UPSC, ultimately reducing dropout rates. In its initial phase, the van traverses various locations in Karnataka, from rural and semi-rural to urban and slum areas. The future plans include extending its reach across different states in the country.

WHICH MEANS THE WHOLE WORLD IS A FAMILY, AND WE NEED TO WORK TOWARDS EACH OTHER'S UPLIFTMENT TO BRING ABOUT CHANGE.

As dropout rates remain a concern, the Aahwahan Foundation aims to reach at least 10,000 children in the current year. Notably, the foundation emphasizes reaching out to female students, recognizing education's pivotal role in empowering them. The foundation's commitment to education goes beyond the wheels. The ‘Laptop Bank’ initiative ensures that the education of economically disadvantaged students continues seamlessly by providing laptops and enabled Wi-Fi for a specified period.

PROJECTS UNNATI AND UDAAN: Aahwahan Foundation's transformative impact extends to projects such as Unnati and Udaan. Launched in September 2021, Project Unnati focuses on aiding the education of children from poor and marginalized families who have faced the loss of a sole breadwinner or parents due to the pandemic. The foundation has successfully supported over 1,000 children spanning various age groups and educational levels. Project Udaan, a beacon for girl students in remote areas, distributes 10,000 bicycles. This addresses transportation challenges and significantly reduces the dropout rate among girls, contributing to an overall improvement in literacy rates. These projects exemplify the foundation's commitment to inclusivity and equal access to education.

and marginalized families who have faced the loss of a sole breadwinner or parents due to the pandemic. The foundation has successfully supported over 1,000 children spanning various age groups and educational levels.

WORKING TOWARDS WOMEN EMPOWERMENT: The Aahwahan Foundation is creating avenues for change at the grassroots level in women's empowerment. Local community women are actively involved in self-help groups run and managed by the village women. These groups receive skill-based training, including producing cloth sanitary pads, papads, pickles, and other locally consumed products. Moreover, the foundation extends employment opportunities to women who have experienced domestic violence or are trapped in the sex trade. Alternate shelter and employment through cottage industries provide a path to economic independence, creating a ripple effect in communities.

COMMUNITY LIVING AND INTEGRATIVE FARMING: Aahwahan Foundation's commitment to community development is evident in its initiatives to upgrade education, healthcare, and farming practices. The foundation strives to help villages become organic by turning waste into biogas, promoting organic farming, and eliminating the use of plastics. Notably, the foundation has successfully cleaned and restored eight water bodies in states like Orissa and Karnataka. Aahwahan Foundation doesn't stop at rhetoric but actively engages with farmers, providing seeds, fertilizers, and realtime knowledge through collaboration with scientists and agricultural experts. Yutrix, a key partner, offers hardware devices that provide essential data on soil quality, seed information, nutritional content, weather conditions, and more. This wealth of information empowers farmers to make informed decisions, revolutionize agricultural practices, and encourage organic farming.

THEIR ENVIRONMENTAL COMMITMENT: Aahwahan Foundation's environmental commitment extends beyond immediate community impact. Planting trees and fostering awareness about climate change among villagers and children exemplify the foundation's dedication to sustainable practices. By intertwining environmental consciousness with community development, the Aahwahan Foundation shapes a future where prosperity coexists with ecological balance. They have also cleaned a lot of beaches and water bodies in several parts of the country to drive change and make the world a better, safer, and cleaner place. This list is inconclusive; the foundation keeps coming up with new ways to make the world a better place for everyone. In a landscape marked by diversity and complexity, the Aahwahan Foundation emerges

Did you know that India invented board games over 5000 years ago? Chess and Pachisi are two good examples! Today, we have thousands of iterations of board games that are played around the world and the hype surrounding them never dies. That’s just how universally loved board games are, they are versatile and can be played over and over again with friends and family. In this article, Imnasanen Jamir talks about 10 of the most popular and unique board games to ever exist. Some might be more popular than others but that doesn’t make it any less enjoyable than them!

TOP TEN BOARD GAMES YOU CAN PLAY WITH FAMILY AND FRIENDS 1. Monopoly

2. The Game of Life

Age Rating: 8+ Genre: Family/Strategy

Age Rating: 9+ Genre: Family/Kids Classic Why do we like it? Well, this game is designed to take us on a journey through life like getting a job, starting a family, or buying a house. Players spin the wheel in the centre, which becomes the deciding factor for outcomes like investment, careers, etc. The player who has the most assets by the end of the game becomes the winner. One thing I love about this game is that it shows life in its purest form i.e., things may never go as planned and that’s okay because that is life.

Inspired by ‘The Landlord’s Game’, Monopoly is easily one of the most played board games in the world. Players roll two dice to buy and trade properties and collect rent from fellow players to bankrupt them. This game is so unpredictable, but that’s what makes it fun! With the complete randomness of Chance and Community Chests, players that are falling behind can easily move ahead and players that are ahead can suddenly go to jail...or worse...bankruptcy!

3. Risk

5. Catan

Age Rating: 10+ Genre: Military Strategy

Age Rating: 8+ Genre: Strategy Catan is a trade, build and settle type of strategy board game which has won the hearts of so many people from around the world, and as proof, 40 million copies of the game have been sold so far. Players roll the dice to get resources and points are awarded for building settlements, having the largest army, etc. A player wins when they gather 10 points and announce it to the rest of the players. Here’s a warning before you play Catan, this game is so addicting, that you may find yourself begging your friends and family to play this with you all the time, it is just that good!

Risk, although hardcore, is not just thrilling but also educational as it teaches diplomacy, self-control, and strategic planning to players. It teaches players to think things through because actions have consequences, and only critical thinking can help them avoid an unfavourable situation. To win, one must acquire and dominate all 42 territories to become the sole winner of the game. Hence, this game may take a while to finish but it is the journey that counts right?

4. Sequence

6. Q.E.

Age Rating: 7+ Genre: Strategy

Age Rating: 8+ Genre: Strategy Q.E. or Quantitative Easing is an auction-based board game where players have unlimited funds to bid on items/companies and winning bids earns you victory points. But here's the trick, the one who ends up spending the most amount of money loses all their points so players have to be careful not to spend too much. This game is unique because, unlike other board games you cannot be in the lead to win. Sounds tricky enough? Here’s a tip, balance is key here, try spending moderately.

With a little bit of luck and brains, anyone is set to play Sequence. I love playing Sequence with my friends and family because it brings me closer to how they think, which equals me understanding them, thus growing closer to them. Forming a row of five poker chips called a sequence is essentially the objective of this game. A plus point for Sequence is that it is one of the most replayable board games to ever exist which also makes it perfect for family or friends gathering.

7. The Perfumer

9. Shadows in the Forest

Age Rating: 12+ Genre: Strategy

Age Rating: 8+ Genre: Strategy/Fantasy How this board game stands apart from others is the way it uses the real-life environment around us to stimulate our gaming experience. As the name suggests, this game is best played in the dark. We as players have to work together to move all ‘shadowlings’ away from the light of the lantern which is placed in the centre of the board. However, one player (the seeker) can move the lantern through a glow-in-the-dark dice. If the shadowlings can gather in the same shadow before the seeker finds them, they win. So, in a nutshell, stay out of the light! Always be in the dark… unless you’re the seeker.

The Perfumer is a game where players have to use their sense of smell to identify the right scents for specific perfumes to earn points. This gimmick alone lands the game in a pretty peculiar spot among other board games. There is a myriad of fragrances that are printed into the cards and based on that you have to identify them all and match them accordingly! Let the best Perfumer win!

8. Merchant’s Cove

10. Tsuro of the seas

Age Rating: 14+ Genre: Strategy/Fantasy

Age Rating: 8+ Genre: Nautical Strategy In Tsuro of the Seas, each player has a ship and they want to stay on sea for as long as possible. Sea monsters exist everywhere and so, players must defend their ships against them where the last one standing will be called the victor. The sea monster can also move depending on the rolls of the dice, so be extra cautious! You never know when those sea monsters will appear!

In Merchant’s Cove, we can immerse ourselves into a medieval world of fantasy where we as players have to craft items that suit the customer's needs and the twist is that every player will have a different way of creating it. Additionally, the supply and demand can be changed by the players. The wealthiest merchant after three business days will be announced as the winner. Get rich, and get lucky is the game. Forge connections, and most importantly never give up, and I guarantee you’ll have a great time with Merchant’s Cove.

aspiring to balance intensity and authenticity in biopics and action films.

How do you balance physical and mental fitness with your busy entertainment career? I clock in three to four hours of training on my non-working days. The first two hours are dedicated to gymnastics, a newfound passion for the past year. I diligently practice various routines. Then, I jump into a boxing class for both a workout and fun. I also religiously go for a 5 km run daily, providing physical activity and mental clarity.

On work and shoot days, I try to kick-start my day around 5 am, with a 5 km run setting a positive tone for the day and clearing my mind. After a day on set, I squeeze in a 20-30-minute workout if I still have some energy. If not, it's a quick Chinese food fix, then straight to bed for well-deserved rest.

Are there specific fitness routines or exercises that you find particularly helpful in staying energized and focused during your demanding work in the film industry?

burning out. While my motivation sometimes leads me to work out six days a week, including Sundays, I've learned the importance of balancing that intensity with adequate rest to maintain overall well-being.

I took up gymnastics about a year and a half ago, and it's been a game-changer for me. I do handstands, cartwheels, and backflips, but my coach also incorporates yoga into the routine – like savasana, bakasana, and headstands. It centers me and keeps my energy flowing. The balance and focus required make it almost meditative. After my daily run, I indulge in a lengthy savasana. Incorporating these practices into my routine makes me feel like I can tackle anything daily, even working until 4 am. My energy stays with me, and I remain active, ensuring I complete everything.

How do you stay motivated and resilient in an industry that can be highly competitive and demanding? Staying motivated in this industry can be challenging, especially during the downtimes. As an actor, it's a rollercoaster – intense work for three to four months, followed by a quiet month, then back in action for another stretch. The ebb and flow is part of the beauty of our profession. The downtime offers a chance to invest in ourselves – our bodies and minds are our instruments. Whether it's maintaining fitness, working on acting skills, or refining dance and stunt abilities, it's an ongoing process. I find motivation in this continuous self-improvement. Keeping to my workout routine and giving 100 percent to personal development ensures I'm always ready for the following role or the quiet moments.

Beyond physical fitness, mental well-being is crucial. What practices do you engage in to maintain a positive mind-set? Physical fitness is a cornerstone of my daily routine, not just for staying in shape but also for mental clarity. I consciously avoid gossip and negative media to safeguard my mind-set from negativity. It's a form of mental protection. INDIA INDIA’S FIRST INTERACTIVE MAGAZINE

In this industry, stress is part and parcel of the game. Whether it's preparing for an event or dealing with various demands, it's crucial not to take oneself too seriously. I remind myself to gracefully handle any mistakes and not let them define me. Ultimately, staying true to myself and not dwelling on the inevitable pressures is my way of maintaining a positive mind-set in this demanding profession.

Are there any fitness recommendations you'd offer our readers to incorporate into their routines? I've recently incorporated specific yoga practices like Shavasana, headstands, and handstands into my routine. These inversions boost blood flow in the opposite direction and demand focus and balance. The clarity of mind they bring is something I aim for daily, and I try to practice them wherever I am. Another tip is to start your day early, around 5:00 AM. This has significantly impacted my life, providing the momentum needed for a workout. Amidst busy schedules, beginning the day with exercise ensures you stay active and energized.

n the fast-paced world of Bollywood and business, actor and entrepreneur Aashiesh reveals the secrets behind his fitness philosophy. Apart from a diverse workout routine that includes running, cycling, swimming, yoga, and strength training to manage fitness amidst a hectic schedule, Aashiesh Sharrma's go-to fitness mantra is his simple yet effective approach to diet.

How do you balance the diversity in your workout routine? My workout routine is pretty simple. I try to keep it like that because then it is sustainable. I begin early morning cardio daily, which is different each day. I pick up an activity each day; one day, it is running; another day, it’s cycling, swimming, or yoga. I finish it off with strength training.

How do you prioritize fitness as an actor and entrepreneur in your busy life? As an actor and entrepreneur, life is a little hectic. But you have to think about prioritizing fitness. To do anything or to achieve anything in life, at the end of the day, we need our mind and body at their top level. If we have to perform or achieve things in life, we need to do our best, and that can only happen if our body and mind function at the top level. I think it’s just the mindset of an individual. Honestly, all it requires is 45 minutes daily, which can quickly be done. You can outperform everybody in life if you prioritize health in general. Do the little things. Set a time for everything, a time for sleeping, and a time for waking up. You will have all the time in the world to do whatever you want to during the day. I think it is the only way to achieve any fitness goal.

How do you beat monotony in a fitness routine? If you see results in the mirror, you will start falling in love with yourself, the monotony, and everything that

comes with it. So we have to fall in love with everything that comes with it. There are moments when the thought of hitting the gym doesn't appeal to me. Instead, I opt for a lengthy walk. It's perfectly fine to step outside, away from the gym, and keep moving. So, that's my way of breaking the monotony. I play music and take a leisurely walk, and that's how I introduce variety to my routine.

What are the fundamental principles you follow to maintain your fitness? • Incorporate activity into your daily routine. Whether walking, running, or taking the stairs, strive to stay active daily. • Focus on nutrition by embracing a good, clean, and timely diet.

Setting this mental goal kickstarts your body's transformative journey. • Avoid rushing into fitness and remember that results will manifest when the body is ready. Stay persistent and dedicated to your fitness journey.

What is your daily diet like? I keep my diet very simple and basic. These days, there are many things in the market that confuse us. Do not fall into the marketing trap; one should eat what grows locally and is easily acceptable by the body. Everything I eat, grains, millet, ghee, etc., is organically and naturally grown on my Jaipur farm. We have cows, and I know exactly where my food has come from over the past ten years. I incorporate a protein-rich portion for lunch comprising legumes, dals, lentils, chana, soya, paneer, or tofu. A modest 60 to 80 grams of mixed millet flour, such as Ragi, Bajra, or Jawar, is included. At 4:30 PM, I enjoy a cup of coffee with a mix of nuts, including soaked almonds, two walnuts, anjeer, and sunflower seeds. Closing the day at 6 PM, dinner features a vegetable soup alongside grilled tofu, soya, or a scoop of protein shake.

How do you manage stress and criticism, especially in a field like acting with constant scrutiny? Not just in our field but life in general these days has become very stressful and competitive, especially with this surge of social media. As actors, we face some extra things because we are in the public eye. There’s a lot of criticism with work, how you look, your skin, your hair, the clothes that you wear, and everything is criticized. What does your daily workout routine look like? I prioritize my workouts in the evening, post-shoots, and meetings, as my body tends to be more active during that time. VAMPIRE VIRUS: The New Horror in the Soil You may have heard of vampires, the undead creatures that suck blood from their victims and can only be killed by sunlight, garlic, or a stake through the heart. But did you know that real-life vampires are lurking in the soil? They are not bats, rats, or bugs but viruses that prey on other viruses to survive. Dhanush Kumar writes about the new virus discovered for the first time in the US Soil.

What are Vampire Viruses? Vampire Viruses are a type of satellite virus, which means they depend on another virus, called a helper virus, to replicate. They attach themselves to the helper virus and use its genetic material and machinery to make copies of themselves. They are like parasites that leech off their hosts or like vampires that latch onto the necks of their victims. The first known vampire virus was discovered in 2023 by researchers from the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, and Washington University in St. Louis. They named it MiniFlayer, after the fictional character from the Buffy the Vampire Slayer TV series. The helper virus that MiniFlayer infects is MindFlayer, after another fictional character from the Stranger Things TV series.

How Do Vampire Viruses Affect The Soil? The soil is home to millions of microorganisms, including bacteria, fungi, and viruses. These microbes are essential in soil health, nutrient cycling, and plant growth. Some viruses benefit the soil, as they help control the population of harmful bacteria or fungi. Other viruses are dangerous, as they cause diseases in plants or animals. Vampire viruses can have both positive and negative effects on the soil. On one hand, they can eliminate harmful viruses that affect crops, such as the tomato spotted wilt virus or the tobacco mosaic virus. On the other hand, they can also kill beneficial viruses that help maintain the soil balance.

INDIA INDIA’S FIRST INTERACTIVE MAGAZINE

38 December 2023

How to Protect Yourself from Vampire Viruses? Unlike the vampires in movies or books, vampire viruses do not directly threaten humans. They are too small to infect human cells and only target specific viruses in the soil. However, they can still affect human health indirectly by altering the soil quality and food production. There, it is essential to monitor the presence and activity of vampire viruses in the soil and to take measures to prevent their spread.

Some of the possible ways to protect yourself are: • Avoid contact with soil that is known to be contaminated with vampire viruses. Wear gloves, masks, and protective clothing when handling such soil. • Wash your hands and sanitize your tools after working with soil. Do not eat or drink anything that has been in contact with soil. • Use organic fertilizers and composts. These can enrich the soil with beneficial microbes and nutrients and boost the soil's immunity against vampire viruses.

MODERN MEN AND SEX: Going Beyond the Said

It is crucial to highlight an often overlooked aspect of modern masculinity: the complex relationship between men and their sexuality. While society’s expectations of men have evolved, many still grapple with issues related to their sexual well-being and mental health. Mehak Walia, in conversation with Aayushi Srinivasan (MWP, GMBPsS), the Head of Operations and senior counselling psychologist at IAMH, and a respected member of the British Psychological Society since 2018 along with Ummang Sharma Bajpai (MWP, GMBPsS), an Integrative Psychologist and the Services and Innovation at the IAMH.

These outdated ideas can lead to a toxic relationship with sex, where men feel pressured to conform to societal expectations rather than embracing a healthy and authentic sexual identity. The only way to break down this barrier towards a better society where men can shed the toxicity and explore life as humans is to address these issues head-on. The eradication of toxic masculinity starts with breaking down the stereotypes that hinder men from being authentic and seeking support when needed. Psychologists Aayushi Srinivasan and Ummang Sharma Bajpai share their thoughts on the topic.

Aayushi Srinivasan

O

ver the years, the concept of masculinity has undergone a significant transformation. Traditional notions of what it means to be a man have evolved into a more nuanced understanding. Men are encouraged to express their emotions, engage in caregiving roles, and break free from rigid stereotypes. However, this expectation shift hasn’t entirely erased the complexities surrounding male sexuality. Toxic masculinity still lingers in our society, manifesting in how men are expected to be sexually aggressive, emotionally distant, and dominant.

INDIA INDIA’S FIRST INTERACTIVE MAGAZINE

"

Aayushi believes that “Modern men face a range of mental health challenges regarding their sex life, often stemming from unrealistic expectations they set on themselves or even the way society thrusts onto them. One of the most common challenges faced when men are in a relationship is performance anxiety. Many men experience anxiety due to unrealistic expectations often perpetuated by pornography or the anxiety to conform to cultural norms on how a ‘man’ should be in a said relationship. Another common challenge men face is Erectile Dysfunction. While ED can be seen as a physiological condition, it can significantly impact men’s mental health and lead to frustration, feelings of inadequacy, and low selfesteem. While we are on this, men struggling with premature ejaculation may also feel a loss of control and worry about satisfying their partner, which leads to stress and anxiety.”

a fact that men have very particular sexual kinks or fetishes. Men can often struggle with acceptance of a fetish: perhaps their desires are incompatible with their partner’s preference, or it may be portrayed as a joke in popular media - and this may cause them quite a bit of distress or challenges in their mental health. However, it is important to note that what one person may believe absurd might be a genuinely troubling issue for other men.”

Ummang Sharma Bajpai

She added, “Meanwhile, another challenge often not commonly addressed, as it is in women, is hormonal imbalance and its effects on men’s self-esteem and overall well-being. Let’s say, for example, having a low libido or low interest in sex can affect the way men perceive their role and affect their perception of their ‘importance.’ This can not only impact their sexual confidence but also tie in with body image issues and, therefore, lower self-esteem. Furthermore, it’s also INDIA INDIA’S FIRST INTERACTIVE MAGAZINE

41 December 2023

Furthermore, while discussing how pressure and expectations impact a man’s perception of his own sexual performance and identity, Ummang expressed, “You see, media portrayals of ‘the ideal man’ are all around us. Due to the lack of comprehensive sex education in our curriculums, most boys and young people turn to internet pornography for guidance on what to expect and what is expected when it comes to sex. And that’s an extremely unrealistic place for such guidance. To be comfortable with sex, we need to be comfortable with ourselves and our partners - and a lot of awkward questions or confusing aspects of sex are not dealt with in pornography, as it’s not meant to be a medium of education. And that’s where the seeds of insecurity are sown.”

"

He further added, “Since traditional gender roles often inhibit men from being vocal about their vulnerabilities or insecurities, these often simple-to-resolve issues snowball into catastrophic thinking and intense shame. This is also an issue across sexual orientations - for example, many gay, bisexual, and pan men struggle with severe body image issues. When you’re watching TV, and there’s a lack of representation of diverse body types - you don’t realize its okay to look different from the on-screen examples. Within the gay community too, there is a degree of idealization for hyper-masculine behaviours, which can end up hurting everyone involved.” While discussing the psychological impact of these issues, Aayushi exclaimed, “There are quite a few psychological factors that can contribute to performance anxiety and other such issues in men. The first is the fear of failure, i.e., the fear of being unable to sustain or maintain an erection, ejaculating prematurely, or even not satisfying their partner. Furthermore, some men who face this anxiety may believe they are inadequate or incompetent to satisfy their partner. Men also draw comparisons to the ‘ideal’ boasting male, so they

may feel the need to perform perfectly every time, which is unattainable and contributes to anxiety. Some men compare themselves to others, whether real-life competitors or unrealistic ideals presented in pornography. These comparisons can lead to feelings of insecurity and inferiority. It’s quite safe to say that insufficient communication with a partner regarding sexual preferences, desires, and worries can result in misinterpretations and worsen performance anxiety. The apprehension of being judged can discourage candid and open discussions.” Another facet contributing to these awful and toxic thought processes is the fact that there are a lot of layers of stigma associated with men’s mental health and sexuality that need to be discussed. While elaborating on the same, Ummang added, “One of the most common stigmas is that ‘Men are always up for sex,’ and it simply isn’t true. Many factors will influence how ready a man is for sex, including hormonal cycles, how stressed they are if they’re on medication, which may have a low sex drive as a side effect if they’re feeling aroused by the partner or situation, and many more. What’s also very important to remember is that Men can also say ‘no.’ It's okay to say no; it doesn’t make you ‘less of a man.’ And a partner must respect this. Another common one is that ‘Men don’t like talking about their feelings,’ which isn’t accurate either- men often don’t know how to talk about their feelings. The way men are socialised, only certain topics are INDIA INDIA’S FIRST INTERACTIVE MAGAZINE

considered ‘okay’ to discuss. So, when faced with complex emotions and distressing thoughts, men have difficulty facing up to these. It'll be difficult to unpack it suddenly if you’ve been told to deny certain parts of your lived experience growing up. But they can open up once they find themselves in a nonjudgmental space.” He added, “People also believe that ‘men prefer solitude,’ which is wrong; we all have a different degree of social interaction we prefer - most of us need it. Again, humans are social creatures, and many radicalized men often suffer from loneliness, and spaces that may be hateful towards others end up offering a sense of community to them. So, it’s important to

get rid of this idea that men like solitude and to reach out and listen to the men in our lives. It is also commonly believed that ‘Men can’t experience sexual assault,’ which is wrong because when it comes to anything sexual, affirmative consent is essential no matter the gender identity of your partner. It’s also important to note the degree of societal stigma associated with such instances. Sadly, most complaints of sexual assault are not taken seriously, and we as a society need to do better. Lastly, don’t even get me started on the number of ridiculous myths revolving around masturbation. A healthy sexual relationship with yourself can often make you feel more secure and allow you to understand your body and your preferences better. Do it safely, and avoid doing it passively. “ He added, “There’s a lot of selfhelp that can work too - but one has to be careful. There are a lot of people who just want to make a quick buck without actually helping out there. Look for resources backed by scientific research rather than social media metrics. The Remaking Manhood community, with books and podcasts, can be a place to find such information. Nothing's Wrong: A Man's Guide to Managing His Feelings by David Kundtz might be helpful too. Learning to be compassionate with yourself (different from self-pity) can be very helpful, and Dr Kristen Neff has great work on ‘Fierce Self Compassion.’”

Nestled in the heart of Madurai, India, the Meenakshi Amman Temple stands as a testament to the city's rich history, culture, and architectural prowess. This stunning temple complex is a place of worship and a treasure trove of mysteries that have intrigued historians and devotees for centuries. Dhanush Kumar delves into the captivating enigmas that shroud this magnificent temple.

ENIGMATIC WONDERS OF MADHURAI'S MEENAKSHI TEMPLE Architectural Marvel Meenakshi Amman Temple's architecture is a masterpiece that leaves visitors awe-struck. You will feel like you have traveled back some 1000 years. The intricate carvings of towering gopurams reveal the genius of ancient artisans. One of the mysteries lies in how such advanced architectural and engineering feats were accomplished during an era without modern tools.

The Disappearing Pillars Within the temple, there's a hall adorned with remarkable musical pillars. When you strike these pillars gently, they produce a range of melodious sounds. In the early 19th century, a British engineer dismantled one of these pillars to find the secret. But the pillar contained no hidden mechanisms, leaving observers mystified by the technology used to create this acoustic marvel.

The Mystery of the Hall of Thousand Pillars The Hall of Thousand Pillars is renowned for its beautiful architecture but has also puzzled researchers due to its coolness. During the scorching heat of Madurai, the hall remains throughout the day. The materials used in its construction and the ancient techniques employed to maintain the temperature within this hall are subjects of ongoing study.

The Secret Tunnel Network There are some rumors around the temple that a network of underground tunnels beneath the temple complex leads to various parts of the city. These tunnels are said to have served both practical and strategic purposes in the past. However, the exact extent of the tunnel system and its historical significance continue to be shrouded in mystery.

Astronomical Alignments The Meenakshi Amman Temple, like many ancient Indian temples, is believed to be aligned with celestial events and energies. The precise astronomical calculations that led to such alignments and their intended spiritual or cosmic significance invite exploration.

Goddess Meenakshi The temple is dedicated to Goddess Meenakshi, an incarnation of the divine feminine. Legend says she was born with three breasts and later transformed into a two-breasted deity. While this story is widely known, its connection to ancient cultural narratives remains a topic of interpretation and speculation.
