P erched high above the local village and set amongst rolling law ns and a one-acre lake, this Dorset Manor House is a Grade II Listed propert y dating to the 13 th centur y when William the Conqueror gifted it to one of his favourite noblemen. Over time, the propert y has evolved into something of a historical jigsaw puzzle w ith Norman and Georgian architecture pieced together w ith wooden beams, stone walls, ancient flagstone floors, large fireplaces and detailed wooden panelling. Our clients approached us w ith the brief to restore this historical home in a way that made sense for contemporar y needs but w ithout jeopardising its rich character. We began by stripping back the layers of previous decoration to reveal the extraordinar y bones of the propert y and then set about sensitively reconfig uring the space to be better for modern living. From the moment one steps through the front door, we wanted to create a gentle reminder of the home’s immense heritage. We left the interior features exposed and embraced a pared back scheme to preser ve the patina of the past, whilst seamlessly combining a modern aesthetic to create a comfortable and elegant family home.

e n t r a n c e h a l l : Due to the property’s Grade II listing, certain elements had to be carefully preserved of which the main Chippendale-style staircase was one. We designed a bespoke console table in mahogany and chose a decorative chandelier to add a touch of grandeur without being excessive. The tartan stair runner is a focal point that leads the eye through the space.

en tr a n ce h a ll: We raised the ceiling to expose the lovely wooden beams. The oak door is a bespoke design with glass panels to let light in while the curtains embroidered in a vine motif bring a welcoming softness to the understated scheme.

– 14 –

k i t c h e n : We transformed the oldest part of the house into a contemporary open-plan kitchendining room. The cabinetry is tailor-made to respond to the idiosyncrasies of old stone, turning nooks and crannies into useful storage space.

– 15 –

dr a w i ng ro o m : In the Georgian wing of the house, we converted the former dining room into a spacious drawing room. Through clever use of panelling, the arched profile of the sash windows was simplified for a more contemporary aesthetic, which is balanced by a mixture of antique and bespoke furnishings.

– 17 –

– 18 –

guest b ed ro o m : In the corner of the guest bedroom is a useful seating area with traditional tongue and groove panelling. The layered neutral colour scheme creates a calming, restful atmosphere with contrasting bursts of colour that engage the eye.

ma s ter bedr oom: The master bedroom underwent a dramatic change. We opened up the pitched roof to increase the feeling of spaciousness and light. Patterned wallpaper forms a calming haze of blue and reaches up to the exposed beams, creating a pleasing mix of rough, smooth and soft textures as the eye wanders.

– 22 –

ma ster b at hro o m : The patterned wallpaper continues into the master bathroom, establishing a sense of cohesion between the two rooms.

COU N TRY ESTATE The Cotswolds

T his Cotswolds Manor House is a spectacular Grade II listed propert y surrounded by idyllic park land. Our clients – who have eight children – approached us to transform the house and adjoining cottages from its dark and manorial past into a light-filled, contemporar y countr yside home. As our clients live and work in London, this would be a special retreat; a place where the parents and children could feel relaxed but which also maintained an element of chic. To achieve this, we reconfig ured the layout to make space for a large k itchen and incorporated a palette of light-reflecting colours, natural materials and bespoke furnishings.

e n t r a n c e h a l l : The entrance hall oozes a countryside atmosphere with a rich colour for the wall treatment and wicker baskets brimming with logs for the numerous fireplaces in the home.

di n i n g r o o m: Our clients weren’t keen to have a formal dining room so we created a family space where two scrubbed oak tables are joined to provide enough seating for the large family and friends. We designed a bespoke console table with a Carrara marble worktop and chose a darker wall colour to give contrast to the huge white dresser.

– 31 –

children’ s b ed ro o ms: Clean and crisp attic bedrooms are kept light and airy to make the most of the space. A special find was the lovely matching antique beds for the girls’ bedroom, which we upholstered in our own Alexandra fabric.

FA M I LY H O M E Hertfordshire

C ountry homes need not always be historical. In Hertfordshire, we were commissioned to design the interior for a breathtak ing newly built propert y. Opportunities to create an entirely bespoke interior for a countr y home from the ground up are rare and we worked closely w ith the architect to reflect our client ’s lifest yle w ith the introduction of an indoor sw imming pool, g y mnasium, games room and full home cinema. With so many diverse spaces, we created harmony throughout the interior w ith a sophisticated blend of lighting, warm materials and natural wood. Our clients wanted a mix of comfort and refined beaut y – something that was neither a pastiche of a bygone era nor too modern and hard-edged. Our design responded to this brief w ith gracious detailing and meticulous accents yet also offered a welcome challenge to our client ’s comfort zone w ith the incorporation of surprising colours and textures. The result is an up-to-date interior that is timeless in its appeal.

e n t r a n c e h a l l : The double-height hall is dominated by a swirling staircase of cantilevered Bath stone and a graceful oak balustrade.

some circumstances, our clients commission us to work on

multiple projects, as was the case w ith these t wo prestigious addresses in K nightsbridge and Belgravia. Both of these apartments required complete refurbishment and reconfig uration of the spatial arrangement to bring the living areas up to date while retaining the period features. The brief was to create a comfortable refuge by day and an entertaining, glamorous space by night. Opulent touches such as rich carpets, marble flooring and bespoke joiner y create a luxurious environment while the clever use of glass doors allow spaces to be best used for multi-functional living.

e n t r a n c e h a l l : In Knightsbridge, dark stained oak creates a dramatic entrance hall while glass doors give way to the welcoming, luminous rooms within. We designed the table in-house and commissioned the bespoke crystal chandelier.

beautiful Queen A nne Home in a quite London suburb on the

R iver Thames was the perfect choice for our clients and their grow ing family. We were commissioned to create a relaxed and luxurious interior w ithout being too ostentatious. Our first port of call was to consider how the space could be reworked to suit our clients’ lifest yle. Due to the propert y’s listed status, permission was obtained to remove the old ser vant ’s staircase next to the k itchen in order to open up the living area and add a much needed pantr y and bootroom. The k nock-on effect of removing the staircase created additional space on the upper floors, which we transformed into a study overlook ing the back garden and a steam room – one of the items at the top of our clients’ w ish list. Modern additions such as underfloor heating as well as securit y, lighting and music controls were incorporated discretely alongside the restoration of period features. Inspiration for the colour scheme came from the propert y’s riverside location and our clients’ extensive art collection.

g a r de n r o o m: The addition of a glass conservatory allowed for the dining area to be extended into a light filled space that celebrates indoor-outdoor living.

R enow ned for serpentine crescents overlook ing the rolling Cotswold landscape, Bath is a world heritage cit y that wears its architecture proudly. Despite suffering extensive bomb damage during W W II, this tow nhouse was no exception. Having sur vived as something of a time capsule, the house was full of original Georgian plaster work , fireplaces and original detailing from the late 1790s. Follow ing the landmark sale of the entire crescent, we were commissioned to be part of a development team tasked w ith restoring the propert y to its original glor y. The sensitive restoration emphasised the natural light, generous proportions and strik ing architecture w ith a contemporar y palette of bright colours, luxurious materials, w ide oak floor boards and beautiful lighting.

si t t i n g r o o m: We chose the almond-coloured scheme as a nod to the exquisite Bath stone exterior and to create a warm, restful backdrop against which colour and texture come to life. Light reflecting elements like the mirrored glass coffee table and embroidered spiral curtains enhance the feeling of space without making the room feel cold.

CALCOT MANOR Bar & Restaurant

When it came to designing the interior for this historic countr yside eater y, the key was creating the perfect atmosphere. With g uests choosing Calcot Manor for relaxation away from pr ying eyes, it was vital to have a seamless transition from the hotel and spa to the welcoming, elegant restaurant and bar. We also sought to give the restaurant a fresh identit y that remained sensitive to the building’s impressive histor y spanning seven centuries. To achieve this, we broke dow n the traditional barriers bet ween k itchen, restaurant and bar to create an air y and vibrant interior space while ensuring restoration work remained true to the original spirit of ever y stone and beam. Large w indows flood the interior w ith light and offer breathtak ing views of the surrounding gardens. A mixture of formal and informal seating creates a convivial ambiance, which is brought to life w ith a vivid colour scheme and immaculate attention to detail.

A rboretum is renow ned as a landscape of beautiful

vistas and spectacular seasonal displays. We were delighted to be commissioned to design the interior for the café and restaurant at this historic location, where some planting dates back to the Victorian era. As a popular tourist destination, it was important to create a comfortable, family friendly environment w ith longevit y of both materials and aesthetic at its core. In keeping w ith the magnificent landscape, the interior scheme was designed to invite the outdoors in through the use of soft tonal colours and natural materials including oak , granite and slate. Sharing tables and bench seating create a sociable environment, whilst loft y arched wooden ceilings, full leng th w indows and simple hanging lanterns mimic the rustic woodland feel.

in one of the most beautiful areas of the Cotswolds, we

discovered a piece of English heritage once k now n as the White Hart. Dating from the late 16 th centur y, it was one of the many countr yside pubs which had fallen into disrepair in recent years. We successfully purchased the White Hart in 2013 and undertook a complete refurbishment w ith the aim to preser ve the building’s histor y while repurposing it as a contemporar y design studio. The White Hart embodies the Sims Hilditch design ethos and is the perfect location to get a feel for what we do while discussing your project.
