Design Concept The Markthal Market is situated in Rotterdam, Netherland. It is a mixed used building consisting of both residential units and commercial markets. This project is an excellent example of creating a miniature bustling community enclosed in a building structure. One of the unique aspects of the project is the shape. Shaped as an arch, the centre of the space is exclusively used as a food market that is open to the public and the surrounding of the building is lled with apartments. Functionality of Space (Floor Plan Layout, Sections, Site Plans, etc) shop, eat, enjoy a drink, live, and park their car shop: there are 96 fresh food stalls open to the public Parking: Underground downtown parking for everyone to use, not just the residents By being open to the public, this building not only houses apartment units but also hosts/serves as a community Core Design The project has multiple cores that are accessible to two/three units per oor. Compared to having one/two cores that are shared with all units on a oor, having more cores eliminates the need for corridors. Circulation Minimal circulation In order to reduce circulation space, there are multiple sets of stairs and elevators in the building to serve a small portion of users. This eliminates the need for corridors. Each set of two or three living units share a small lobby with access to the stairs and stairs. This core space is then repeated on the levels above and below.
