THE COACHES

HEAD COACH
MATT JETER
Matt Jeter was named the 2018 American Rivers Conference Coach of the Year, becoming the seventh coach in program history to receive the honor and first since 2003 after leading the team to a 7-3 finish and 6-2 A-R-C record.
The 2018 American Rivers Conference Coach of the Year enters his seventh season at the helm in 2022, bringing in a record of 21-30 in his first six seasons.
Jeter has coached 32 all-conference performers, six all-region honorees and one All-American while at Simpson. Under his direction, safety Brendan Holmes was a 3x first team all-conference and 3x third team all-region performer between 2017-19 and Michael Connor earned the program’s first All-American honor in 10 years in 2018.
Jeter was a two-year starter at cornerback for the Simpson football team from 1996-97, helping the Storm to a record of 22-2 and two trips to the NCAA Division III Playoffs.
The 33rd head coach in program history, Jeter enjoyed a successful run as an assistant coach before taking over the Storm. Jeter was at NCAA Division II Central Missouri from 2010-15, starting out as the special teams coordinator and defensive backs coach before taking over as the defensive coordinator from 2011-15.

Jeter helped Central Missouri to a 47-22 mark in his six seasons on staff, including three postseason appearances. The Mules won at least six games each season during Jeter’s tenure, highlighted by a recordsetting 11-win season in 2010 when the Mules fin ished 11-3 and advanced to the quarterfinal round of the NCAA Division II Playoffs. Central Missouri posted eight-win campaigns in 2011, 2014 and 2015, ap pearing in the Kanza Bowl in 2011 and winning the Texarkana Bowl in 2014. The Mules went 8-3 last fall, narrowly missing a berth in the postseason.

Jeter’s defenses consistently ranked among the best in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Asso ciation. The Mules were third in total defense in 2015 (365.8 ypg), fifth in 2013 (391.6 ypg) and fourth in 2012 (365.8). His units had a knack for creating turnovers, generating 59 in the last two seasons, including a MIAA-leading 30 in 2014. In five years as defensive coordinator, Jeter’s teams allowed less than 23 points per game while 16 defensive players earned all-MIAA honors.
Prior to joining the staff at Central Missouri, Jeter spent eight years as an assistant at NCAA Divi sion I Football Championship Subdivision member Drake University. He served as the defensive backs coach and recruiting coordinator for the Bulldogs, helping Drake win the Pioneer Football League title in 2004. He was the defensive coordinator in 2007, piloting a unit that led the PFL in redzone scoring and ranked fourth in the nation with 31 forced turnovers. Jeter helped the Bulldogs to six consecutive winning seasons from 2004-09, including a 10-2 mark in 2004, a 9-2 record in 2006 and an 8-3 mark in 2009.

Jeter started at cornerback for head coach Jim Williams in 1996 and 1997, the most successful two-year period Simpson football history. The Storm won back-to-back Iowa Conference titles, going 10-1 in 1996 in 12-1 in 1997. Jeter was a team captain on the 1997 team that set a school record for wins in a season and made an appearance in the national semifinals. He also earned two letters as a member of the track and field team.
He transferred to Simpson from Iowa Central Community College, where he was a first team all-
region selection and team captain as a sophomore in 1995.
Jeter earned his bachelor’s degree in physical education from Simpson in 1998. He and his wife, Kimberly, have two sons: Jordan and Jayden.

RETIRED
RICKY GALES
1988-89
Deric “Ricky” Gales is arguably the finest running back ever to put on a Simpson uniform. After spending two years at the University of Nebraska-Omaha, the 6-1, 195-pound Des Moines native joined Simpson in time for the 1988 season. Gales led Simpson to its first Iowa Conference title in 19 years and was named first team All-Conference.
Entering the 1989 season, Gales’ star was on the rise. He was selected as a pre season All-American by three different publications, the Football Gazette, Sporting News, and the College Football Preview. By the time the season ended, Gales would rewrite the record book and was named the National Small College Player of the Year by the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA). He would later receive the AFCA’s Coaches Choice Award in January 1990.
Aided by his high rushing statistics, Gales averaged 14.4 points per game during his career. He led Division III as a senior in both rushing (2,035 yards) and points (166). With Gales leading the way, Simpson led the nation in total offense (5,140 yards).
Entering the 2017 season, Gales still holds the reocrd for most consecutive 200 yard games, rattling off eight to close the 1989 season. In what turned out to be his final collegiate game, Gales rushed for 389 yards in a 42-35 loss to St. John’s (Minn.) in the first round of the 1989 NCAA Division III playoffs. At the time, the yardage broke the record in all three NCAA Divisions, but did not count as an official NCAA record since it came during the playoffs.
Gales owns the school record for rushing yards in a season and is second in career rushing yards despite playing just two seasons. He was named first team All-Con ference in 1989 and became the first Simpson player to be named Iowa Conference MVP. He led the Simpson offense to IIAC records for most yards per game (528.5) and total offense (788, set against William Penn Sept. 23, 1989).

Upon the conclusion of his career, Gales became the only football player in the his tory of the Simpson program to have his number retired. His jersey continues to hang in the hallway of the Cowles Athletic Complex, honoring his unparalleled ac complishments on the Simpson gridiron.
Gales was inducted into Simpson’s Hall of Fame in 2004.
