THE COACHES

HEAD COACH REED HOSKINS

Reed Hoskins was hired as the 34th head coach in Simpson football history on Dec. 12, 2022. He guided the Storm to three wins in 2023 and five victories in 2024, including a perfect 5-0 record at Buxton Stadium. Simpson’s five wins last season was the program’s best output since 2019.

Hoskins made his way to Indianola after spending seven seasons as the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Illinois Wesleyan. He helped guide the Titans to a 41-22 record during that time as well as a pair of College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin titles in 2017 and 2018.

During Hoskins’ time at Illinois Wesleyan, the Titan offense produced 20 All-CCIW selections including five during the 2018 season which saw Illinois Wesleyan rank top-10 nationally in eight statistical categories. The Titans went 6-4 this past season, a three-win improvement from the previous year and the fifth six-win campaign in the last seven years.

Prior to Illinois Wesleyan, Hoskins spent the 2011-2015 seasons as the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Wisconsin-La Crosse.

He coached 18 all-conference performers while also serving as the academic coordinator for the Eagles, who maintained a team grade point average above 3.0 for 10 consecutive semesters.

From 2008-11, Hoskins was the passing game coordinator, quarterbacks and wide receivers coach at his alma mater and fellow American Rivers Conference foe Wartburg. He helped guide the Knights to league championships in both his first and last seasons in Waverly. Hoskins also had two coaching stints with St. Cloud State (2007-08) and North Carolina Wesleyan (2006-07).

Hoskins graduated from Wartburg in 2006 and was the starting quarterback for the Knights three seasons, earning second team all-conference recognition as a sophomore. He ranks fifth all-time in career passing yards (6,433), passing touchdowns (56), pass completions (489) and pass attempts (864).

Hoskins and his wife, Elizabeth, have three children: Haylee, Addison, and Carter.

HALL OF FAME

06 TAYLOR NELSON CLASS OF 2024

2010-13 • Quarterback

Taylor Nelson ’14 is one of the most accomplished quarterbacks in Simpson football history. He still holds career records for passing yards (9,556), completions (851), passing attempts (1,373), touchdowns (77), total offense (10,771), and total touchdowns responsible for (100). Nelson earned Iowa Conference Offensive MVP honors in 2013 and was a first team all-conference selection that same year, after earning second team allconference recognition in 2012. He led the Storm to 20 wins over his four seasons, including a 7-3 campaign in 2013 with a second-place conference finish. Nelson also holds single-season records for completion percentage (65.5%) and touchdowns (34) in 2013, as well as total offense per game (324.4) in 2012, and his 39 completions in a single game remain tied for a conference record. His leadership, consistency, and record-setting performances cemented his legacy in Simpson Athletics.

01 BRAD VOGEL CLASS OF 2025

2011-14 • Wide receiver and return specialist

Brad Vogel ’15 was one of the most dynamic players in Simpson football history, leaving his mark as a versatile wide receiver and electrifying return specialist. Over his career, he earned first team all-conference honors three times as a return specialist and was named first team all-conference wide receiver in 2013, along with multiple all-region selections.

Vogel set Simpson career records for kick return yards (2,601), kick returns (111) and all-purpose yards (5,687), and still ranks among the top five in receiving yards, receptions, touchdowns, receptions per game, all-purpose yards per game, and average yards per kick return. His speed, vision, and playmaking ability made him a constant threat on the field and a standout in the program’s history.

HALL OF FAME

84 DUSTY KAIN CLASS OF 2016

2002-05 • Wide receiver

Dusty Kain ’06 cemented his legacy as one of Simpson’s greatest receivers, rewriting the record books during his standout career. A three-time First Team All-Conference performer, Kain graduated with Simpson’s career records for receiving yards (3,210) and receptions (233), as well as singleseason marks for yards (1,466), receptions (93) and touchdowns (14). His sophomore season in 2003 remains one of the best in program history, as he topped 1,400 yards, scored 14 touchdowns and helped lead the Storm to a 9-2 record and NCAA Playoff berth. Kain surpassed 1,000 receiving yards again in 2004 and capped his career as a finalist for the 2005 Gagliardi Trophy, awarded to the top player in Division III football. A multi-sport standout, he also earned two All-Conference honors in baseball.

50 LUKE STOVER CLASS OF 2020

2005-08 • Defensive lineman

Luke Stover ’09 anchored the Storm defensive line as one of the most dominant defenders in program history. A two-time team captain, Stover earned Third Team All-America honors in 2008, becoming just the fourth defensive lineman in school history to receive the distinction. He was also a two-time

All-Conference selection, earning First Team honors in 2008 and Second Team honors in 2007. Stover led Simpson in tackles in back-to-back seasons, recording 123 stops in 2007 and 103 more in 2008, along with doubledigit tackles for loss and multiple interceptions across his career. His toughness, leadership, and relentless play made him a cornerstone of Simpson’s defense and one of the program’s elite defensive standouts.

RETIRED NUMBER

23 RICKY GALES

1988-89 • Running back

Deric “Ricky” Gales is arguably the finest running back ever to put on a Simpson uniform. After spending two years at the University of Nebraska-Omaha, the 6-1, 195-pound Des Moines native joined Simpson in time for the 1988 season. Gales led Simpson to its first Iowa Conference title in 19 years and was named first team All-Conference.

Entering the 1989 season, Gales’ star was on the rise. He was selected as a preseason All-American by three different publications, the Football Gazette, Sporting News, and the College Football Preview. By the time the season ended, Gales would rewrite the record book and was named the National Small College Player of the Year by the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA). He would later receive the AFCA’s Coaches Choice Award in January 1990.

Aided by his high rushing statistics, Gales averaged 14.4 points per game during his career. He led Division III as a senior in both rushing (2,035 yards) and points (166). With Gales leading the way, Simpson led the nation in total offense (5,140 yards).

Entering the 2017 season, Gales still holds the reocrd for most consecutive 200 yard games, rattling off eight to close the 1989 season. In what turned out to be his final collegiate game, Gales rushed for 389 yards in a 42-35 loss to St. John’s (Minn.) in the first round of the 1989 NCAA Division III playoffs. At the time, the yardage broke the record in all three NCAA Divisions, but did not count as an official NCAA record since it came during the playoffs.

Gales owns the school record for rushing yards in a season and is second in career rushing yards despite playing just two seasons. He was named first team All-Conference in 1989 and became the first Simpson player to be named Iowa Conference MVP. He led the Simpson offense to IIAC records for most yards per game (528.5) and total offense (788, set against William Penn Sept. 23, 1989).

Upon the conclusion of his career, Gales became the only football player in the history of the Simpson program to have his number retired. His jersey continues to hang in the hallway of the Cowles Athletic Complex, honoring his unparalleled accomplishments on the Simpson gridiron.

Gales was inducted into Simpson’s Hall of Fame in 2004.

FACILITIES

Steven Johnson Fitness Center

The Steven Johnson Fitness Center opened to the Simpson community in January 2014, creating a first-class, comprehensive fitness complex located at the heart of campus. The $6 million project is highlighted by a two-tier workout facility consisting of a 5,500 square foot strength and conditioning center and a 4,500-square foot exercise and fitness center. The picturesque facility overlooks Buxton Stadium.

In addition to the Fitness Center, the 2014 renovation included additional classroom and meeting space, administrative and academic suites, an expanded wrestling room, a cheer, dance and multipurpose room, a new Hall of Fame display, an exercise science and athletic training lab and a Swim Ex rehabilitation and therapy pool.

Buxton Stadium

The home for Storm football on Saturday afternoons since 1949, Buxton Stadium was named in honor of longtime Simpson and Indianola benefactor, William Buxton III ‘28 in 1998. The stadium was previously named Neff Field after L.N. Neff.

The centerpiece of Simpson’s campus, the stadium seats 5,000 fans and features state-of-the-art playing surfaces. The track and turf inside the stadium were installed in August 2022 with safety measures for concussion prevention. The stadium also boasts a high-definition video board spanning 15 feet by 28 feet. Showcasing a multimedia, LED video display, the project was made possible by gifts from members of Simpson’s 1969 Mineral Water Bowl football team.
