360HK solo swim and swim courses for children At Simpson Marine we are passionate about fostering relationships with the water from a young age and this includes our support of the Splash Foundation, Hong Kong’s only not-for-profit swim school. In November 2017 Simpson Marine supported the Foundation’s 360SwimHK event which saw Simon Holliday, a famed English Channel swimmer, swim solo non-stop around Hong Kong Island on 11 November in just 12 hours and 35 minutes, much faster than originally anticipated (13 to 18 hours). An amazing achievement indeed. The 360SwimHK challenge aimed to raise awareness for the Splash Foundation’s swimming course, an on-the-water safety programme for underprivileged children and domestic helpers in Hong Kong. After months of fund raising and various activities more than 1,000,000 HKD was raised for the Foundation and will contribute to teaching 5000 children and domestic helpers to swim by 2020. Simpson Marine and many colleagues privately supported the cause with donations and by assisting Simon’s swim with the Monte Carlo 6, hosting both Splash Foundation members and young swimmers on board. Well done to all involved. Giving is great!

Volvo Ocean Race yachts docked at Kai Tak Cruise Terminal, ready for guest visits

Simpson Marine Hosts Owners’ VIP Day

at the Volvo Ocean Race 2017/2018 Hong Kong Stopover On 30 January 2018, we organised a unique experience for yacht owners from Hong Kong, China and Taiwan by arranging a private tour of the Volvo Ocean Race (VOR) Kai Tak Race Village including guided tours on TEAM BRUNEL, AKZO NOBEL and TURN THE TIDE ON PLASTIC’s racing boats and a visit to team bases under the tutelage of VOR Ambassador and renowned sailor Nick Moloney. The tours were led by the VOR sailors and gave a fascinating first hand insight for the visiting guests into life during long racing passages, team stories and more. After the Village tour guests gathered at ‘The Globe sponsored by Clean Oceans’ where drinks and canapés were served during a short presentation from Miles Quiltmann, VOR Executive Director. This was followed by a fascinating Q&A session with Nick and special guest, British sailing champion Brian Thompson

who was part of race team TURN THE TIDE ON PLASTIC as navigator. Brian gave some fascinating insights on his adventures with the VOR and other races, all leading to his conclusion that sailing is an incredible adventure and a lifelong engagement. He also touched upon the point that litter-strewn plastic oceans are becoming sailors’ reality and that we need to fight this all together, hence the environmental message carried by the VOR on the impact of the plastic in the sea with TURN THE TIDE ON PLASTIC’s participation. Simpson Marine has now made an official pledge to reduce single-use plastics across the whole company to help contribute to this essential cause. Refusing the use of plastic bottles, plastic bags and straws can make a huge difference to our waters, and we will now be working in that direction. Finally, guests were addressed by Mike Simpson who also shared some insights on ocean pollution and carried his message to the yacht owners, who we know will take it further. Let’s make a better world for our growing generations of sailors! Read more about Simpson Marine’s support of clean oceans in a feature story on page 72.

Five Beneteaus race in the 2018 Taiwan - Okinawa Regatta Held on 18 May, the 2018 Taiwan - Okinawa Regatta saw a number of yachts take part in the round the island race in Keelung, Taiwan. Tony Chen, Simpson Marine Country Manager in Taiwan and pioneer of the Taiwan sailing culture, invited many Beneteau owners to join the regatta and we were pleased to see five beautiful Beneteau sailing boats competing in the race, including an Oceanis 38, two Oceanis 45s, a First 45, and an Oceanis 60. A Beneteau Antares 32 also served as the committee boat of the race… clearly Beneteau dominated the sea! Tony Chen joined the OC60 crew to race, helping them and the owner compete the long race from Keelung to Okinawa. A combination of team work, beautiful surroundings and life on board made this a journey full of fun. Congratulations to Tony and the owner of the OC60 on winning second place in the regatta, and it was great to see more and more Taiwanese owners taking part in this fun event.

First Beneteau Oceanis 51.1 sold in Taiwan

Taiwan loves sailing and Beneteau, and Beneteau loves Taiwan. Almost a full range of Beneteau yachts has been sold into Taiwan over the years, with many of these yachts actively cruising in all local regattas. We are now very proud to announce that the first Asia order for the redesigned Ocean 51.1 has been sold into Taiwan after she premiered at the Singapore Yacht Show 2018. This year also saw the return of the infamous Simpson Marine Poker Run! Phill, Julien and Tony from our Singapore office headed up with the Beneteau Gran Turismo 46 and met the convoy at the registration night just before the race. The regatta is essentially a combination of great sailing, delicious food and lots of fun cruising in convoy in the setting of beautiful tropical islands. The participants sailed from Batam’s Nongsa Point Marina to the Equator to give newcomers the experience of “crossing the line’’ with stopovers at Fish Head Island on the journey south and a new destination, Benan, on the trip north. The Neptune Regatta continues to grow in popularity every year and we are already looking forward to the next edition.

SB20 Asian Grand Slam Championships The 2018 SB20 Asian Grand Slam Championships was a great event and a real challenge in many ways. After winning the SB20 Western Circuit last year, our colleague Tony Holman participated in the 2018 edition over two days and made a great effort with his team mates despite the strong winds and some equipment issues. This resulted in a mid-fleet result out of 28 boats, but was a great effort and fantastic opportunity to race against some of our clients. The journey is more important than the result!

Cooler weather in the evening brought even more visitors to the show to enjoy the lineup of yachts, together with an array of food and drinks and water demonstrations. A number of guests came to visit the yachts during the show and we were even able to welcome some of the Thailand Navy from Samutprakran who visited the Monte Carlo Yachts 86. The first model in the F-Line to be revealed is the all-new F-33, designed by Mancini, with details on this exciting new design released for the first time at the 2018 Boot Dusseldorf boat show. Perfect for indoor-outdoor living, with its open design the focal point of the yacht, the F-Line 33 is an entry-level model that blends Italian style with Fairline’s trademark quality and heritage to create exciting high-performance day boating. “This is a traditional Fairline but with a modern twist,” says the yard.

SIMPSON MARINE COMMITS TO

#PLASTICFREEOCEANS Hong Kong is home to a diverse range of coastal habitats, with around 6,000 marine species having been recorded in our waters. Unfortunately, there is no doubt that plastic pollution in our oceans in Asia and around the world is a very real and serious issue, with beautiful destinations being spoilt by an abundance of pollution and natural habitats and marine life being put at risk.

The team at Simpson Marine has a longstanding passion for working towards cleaner oceans and has recently expressed a formal commitment to Plastic Free Oceans. During the recent Volvo Ocean Race 2017/2018 stopover and OCEAN Summit, held in Hong Kong in January 2018, Simpson Marine signed an official pledge to substantially reduce singleuse plastic across the company and promote a Plastic Free policy with our owners and crew. We know that small change adds up to make a difference and we want our owners and children to be able to cruise in and enjoy beautiful, unspoilt waters in years to come. There are several initiatives underway in Hong Kong that are helping us learn more about the issues being faced by our oceans and how we can best address them. The World Wide Fund For Nature (WWF) Hong Kong is one organisation making a real difference. In 2014 it launched its

Fairline Yachts joins Simpson Marine’s portfolio of brands

Targa 63GT in Hong Kong

In 2018 Simpson Marine welcomed Fairline Yachts to its brand portfolio when it was appointed an official distributor in Hong Kong and the Philippines. The brand has already proved a popular addition thanks to Fairline’s reputation for excellence and long history of over 50 years of building yachts. With three different ranges – the performance motor cruiser Targa line (43-63’), the luxury flybridge Squadron line (48-64’) and the brand new express-cruiser F-Line – Fairline’s models are well suited to cruising around Asian waters thanks to easy navigation, generous sizes and luxurious fit outs. Fairline is always evolving its offering and all three lines were recently redeveloped by forward-thinking Italian designer Alberto Mancini who added his flair and design excellence to these already popular designs, while still retaining Fairline’s timeless understated elegance, comfort and performance.

78

Unsurprisingly the Simpson Marine team has already had a number of enquiries about the Fairline range. “The new F-Line is going to turn heads alongside the recognised Targa ranges (Open, GT and GTO versions) and the renowned Squadron flybridge models, which have proved very popular in Hong Kong in the past,” says David Walder, Hong Kong Sales Manager at Simpson Marine. “Three of the most popular models on offer from Fairline are the new F-33, the Squadron 53 and Targa GT63.”

The F-33 is an exciting open sports boat addition to the Fairline family. Revealed in late 2017, the first model is due to launch in early 2019. Designed by Mancini the F-Line 33 will be the first in a new series of F-Line dayboats, with the open design at the heart of the vessel. The F-Line 33 blends Italian style with Fairline’s trademark quality and heritage to create exciting high-performance day boating. “This is a traditional Fairline but with a modern twist,” says the yard.

Blissful moments on the Targa 63

The Squadron 53 is a trademark elegant Fairline design, with exterior styling, also by Mancini, that combines soft curves, the graceful arch of its swept flybridge and sophisticated styling. Every detail in the Fairline 53 has been carefully considered, creating a truly special yacht that compromises on nothing. Ideal for cruising in style and comfort this model is suited to day use and longer trips alike. Exquisite detailing throughout the vessel ensures a feel of high-luxury and beautiful craftsmanship. Multiple customisation options are on offer, ensuring every build is uniquely personalised to its owner. The Targa 63G showcases the best of Italian flair, Dutch ingenuity and British craftsmanship, with its design by Mancini together with Fairline’s

experienced in-house designers and alongside Dutch naval architecture firm Vripack. The 63 GT has huge amounts of indoor space and its dramatic hull and sleek profile accommodate an extensive range of onboard innovations, including a powered sunshade over the cockpit, giving guests the opportunity to socialise in or out of doors. Flexible interiors lend themselves to various cabin and saloon options to suit any requirement, and three or four cabin layouts are available. These three designs are just a selection of the full Fairline range and with 11 models available there is plenty of choice for buyers. layout options which have generally become very uncommon these days as many shipyards are offering less and less options to customers in order to save costs by streamlining production. Again, the cheerful staff seemed to relish handcrafting each yacht and were eager to point out to us the bespoke customisations they were working on for individual clients and how they were making people’s wishes come true. Having been taken into the secret projects shed to see the brand new Targa 43 taking shape ahead of the Autumn yacht shows this year, our final treat was being taken up to the cabinet factory where the wood that goes into building the interior accommodation is made. Again, I was astonished to see the amount of carpenters busy at work without a machine in sight. We saw all types of pieces of the interior being hand shaped and sanded and perhaps the most impressive part of all was the hand varnishing and time, care and detail which go into every piece. It really made me feel as if I was in a personalised boutique rather than a yacht factory and I was simply blown away by the depth the hand crafting of the wood gives you. The Walnut joinery finished in high gloss is simply stunning and truly adds a Je ne sais quoi to the yachts that is hard to beat these days. Come and see the new Targa 48 arriving in Hong Kong in early December 2018.

Thank you to the Fairline team for an unforgettable visit

The yacht is his second home and a private space worth cherishing. Having gained so much yachting experience, Wang Hao now wants to buy another cross-ocean powerboat to explore the wider world with his family. “I am not that young now, my plans may not be suitable for a monohull sailing boat,” Wang Hao jokes. The perfect work/life balance Away from his busy career as a dentist, Andrew Tse ensures a work/life balance by relaxing on his Sense 55 and exploring the sea

Being a doctor means a lot. It means being well-educated and being conscientious and meticulous at work. Many people will only ever see the serious and professional side of a doctor, especially in Asia, but there are other ways to look beyond the stereotype and see how they enjoy their down time. The owner of his own clinic, Andrew Tse is one of the most famous dentists in Taiwan. Although he looks serious and professional from the outside, when he is not working Andrew has many different hobbies and passions that he enjoys. Driving and diving are particular passions and he owns sports cars and has enjoyed travelling abroad to scuba dive for more than 20 years. A lover of travel, he enjoys experiencing the world and nature and bringing back stories to tell. Having been a diver for so long, Andrew’s introduction to boating was a gradual one, first getting on motoryachts as a base for his water sports activities. The first time he went on a sail boat Andrew remembers feeling totally relaxed and peaceful, enjoying only the sound of the wind blowing with no noise from the engines. “It was so romantic, being on a sailboat and able to just enjoy nature and my surroundings, ” he says. “I fell in love with sailing from this first experience and I knew I had to own a sail boat at some time in my life.” When he first saw the Beneteau Sense 50 he immediately liked it and bought it. “The design was very unique, with huge onboard spaces and very easy access from the inside to the deck,” he says. Unfortunately the Sense 50 was involved in an accident, but when

SHARING STORIES AND THE EXPERIENCES OF THAILAND ON A LAGOON 42

As a couple, one of our biggest common passions is scuba diving and underwater photography and it soon became clear to us that the perfect way to enjoy our joint hobbies was by boat. To fulfil this dream we chose to buy a beautiful Lagoon 42 catamaran – Sea 4 You – and base ourselves in Thailand. Sailing on the Andaman Sea our playground is very large, stretching from Langkawi to the Similan Islands. I [Marie] am an engineer and my husband became an underwater photographer after retiring from his business career. Now that we have more time, we wanted to spend the European winter in an area that was more interesting for us. And of course we needed the perfect boat as our base. We chose the Lagoon 42 because it is very spacious and we knew we needed room for all our diving gear and compressor. The Simpson team were a great help, assisting us in choosing the right options and then having the yacht shipped and equipped locally.

Ang Chee Boon & his charter business Owner of both an Aquila 48 and a Clipper 40, Ang Chee Boon shares his love of yachting by offering both his yachts up for charter.

What boat do you currently own? I own two boats, a Aquila 48 Power Catamaran and a Clipper 40 What made you decide to buy these particular boats? I first bought the Clipper 40 from Simpson Marine for charter – the model was recommended to me by the Simpson Marine team as I was new to boating at that time and my knowledge was limited. I subsequently wanted to add to my charter fleet and after three years in the charter market I realised that catamarans are a good size and fit for charter prospects – most of our charter enquiries are keen on catamarans rather than a power boat monohull – and purchased the Aquila 48. Lagoon continues its tradition of innovation and recently launched new models including the Lagoon 50, set to be a trendsetter of the new generation. This model was extremely well received and the Lagoon 50 was awarded Multihull of the Year 2018 in the 40 to 50ft category. This prestigious award was testament to Lagoon’s research and design process which paid off with the yacht’s new visual identity, rigging and hull design. New to Simpson Marine’s list of Asian representation is Aquila Power Catamarans which has already proved popular following its debut in Thailand and Singapore, filling the gap in our product portfolio for the growing power catamaran market. First revealed in May 2018, Sanlorenzo’s SX76 crossover yacht is the much-anticipated follow up to their hugely popular SX88 and the second model in the yard’s SX line. Designed by Studio Zuccon International with an interior by Piero Lissoni the SX76 is a unique crossover between traditional classic flybridge yachts and ever more popular explorer yachts, all packaged into Sanlorenzo’s distinctive look. She sports features that are signature to the MCY brand, such as an enormous lounge foredeck, Portuguese bridge and flybridge designed for entertaining. Notable for a yacht of her size, the flybridge can be outfitted with a Jacuzzi, Saloon

large bar area and sunbathing area.

Monte Carlo Yachts 96 With the first unit in Asia sold to Thailand by Simpson Marine, the new MCY 96 has been designed according to the highest standards on the market and complies with RINA Pleasure or RINA Charter Class certifications. Upon request, the new model can also be certified according to CE-A category standards to be utilised as a pleasure boat or according to MCA MGN 280. The possibility to choose the preferred type of certification is fairly unique and ensures significant added value for the owner. The MCY96 stands out for its smooth lines, high bow and deceptively low profile that give its external profile a timeless, contemporary allure that is a natural evolution of the iconic MCY lines while keeping a coherent Saloon
