Sanlorenzo SL106 at her launch in RHKYC
OFFICIAL SANLORENZO LAUNCH AT THE ROYAL HONG KONG YACHT CLUB Simpson Marine officially launched the premium Italian superyacht brand Sanlorenzo in Hong Kong in early November 2015. The launch took place at a lavish two-day event held at the Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club where Managing Director Mike Simpson welcomed distinguished guests and media from all over Asia. Attendees enjoyed excellent food, cocktails and live music while visiting the magnificent Sanlorenzo SL106 superyacht moored against the backdrop of a beautiful Hong Kong skyline. It was undoubtedly the season’s most glamorous yachting event in Hong Kong, and we thank everyone who attended. Guests welcomed by Mike Simpson
FIRST BENETEAU-LAGOON FESTIVAL DRAWS LOCAL SAILING COMMUNITY Two powerhouses in French yacht building were brought together as we celebrated the inaugural Beneteau and Lagoon Festival, organised jointly by Beneteau Asia and Simpson Marine. The three-day event took place 19 to 21 November 2015 and highlighted three flagship yachts from Beneteau and Lagoon: the Lagoon 630 Motor Yacht, Lagoon 560 Imagine and Beneteau Oceanis 60. Shortly afterwards, the two Lagoons were sold to Asian owners. Oceanis 55, Lagoon 560 and Lagoon 630 MY at ABC
The festival included a display at the Aberdeen Boat Club followed by a cocktail reception for Beneteau and Lagoon owners, sea trials on all three yachts on the second day, and on the final day there was a flotilla escapade for all Beneteau and Lagoon yachts in Hong Kong to Po Toi for a relaxed and convivial lunch. Both Simpson Marine and Beneteau Asia were delighted to see so many owners and clients come out for the event – thank you to everyone for joining us. It was a huge success, and we plan to have regular gatherings in

SOLD INTO HONG KONG Superyachts are gaining in popularity in Asia and 2015 was busy with three Sanlorenzo superyachts being sold into the region: the 46Steel, 460EXP and SL106. The SL106, delivered to Hong Kong in early May 2015, was designed specifically for the Chinese market; with a spacious saloon with balconies either side, a yellow onyx bulkhead, separate dining room with round table for 12 and an aquarium. The SL106 is a yacht from the Italian builder’s planing-hull motor yacht range, which has been Sanlorenzo’s mainstay for more than three decades. These superyacht sales are a clear sign of Sanlorenzo’s growing reputation across the region and the appreciation of the brand’s core values of timeless styling, SL106 in Hong Kong

REMEMBERING ROBIN WYATT Tragically Robin Wyatt and the crew of his newly delivered yacht ‘Europa’ were lost at sea during a passage from Hong Kong to Subic Bay in the Philippines in October 2015. What had started as a routine crossing, turned into tragedy when the yacht encountered typhoon Mujigae and disappeared. Despite an intensive search effort by search and rescue aircraft from the Hong Kong Government Flying Service covering over 30,000 square miles of ocean and gallant efforts by private aircraft owners in the Philippines, noz trace has been found of the yacht or her crew. An extremely accomplished yachtsman, Robin became a well-known personality in yachting circles throughout Asia with numerous friends and colleagues throughout the industry. Robin was one of the earliest members of the Simpson Marine team having joined the company in 1986 as a broker based in our original squatter’s shack office opposite the Aberdeen Marina Club. At that time the company consisted of myself, a secretary, a service technician and a book keeper. Robin was to spend 25 years with Simpson Marine, undertaking a number of different roles around the region: establishing the Simpson Marine office in Singapore in the late 1980’s, an independent office in Kuala Lumpur in 1990 and for a time running a small office in Marina Cove in Hong Kong in 1993. It was however at our main office at the Aberdeen Marina Club, that Robin achieved his greatest success as Brand Manager for Beneteau Yachts and Azimut and finally as Sales Manager. Robin left Hong Kong in 2010 and moved to the Philippines to represent Simpson Marine in Manila before finally setting

up his own yacht sales and brokerage company, Europa Yachts, in 2013. During his career with Simpson Marine, Robin was without doubt the most successful yacht sales executive of his time and built long lasting and respected relationships with clients and industry colleagues alike. His passion for yachting of all kinds, and his tremendous knowledge combined with a drywit and common sense rapport with customers, made him a popular figure in marinas and yacht clubs throughout Asia. It is no exaggeration to say that today there are literally hundreds of yachts sold by Robin still being enjoyed by their owners in Asian waters. That is part of Robin’s legacy to yachting. All of us in Simpson Marine who knew him so well for so many years, are saddened by the loss of Robin and offer our condolences to Robin’s family and relatives. We also extend our condolences to the relatives of ‘Europa’s’ crew of Brian, Rudolf, Allen and Harry. Robin will be remembered for his untidy desk, his dilapidated deck shoes with laces undone, his mischievous grin and tousled hair and his loyalty and common sense and sharp mind; he was one of a kind. He will be remembered for the great personality he was and the happiness he brought to so many yacht owners and friends across the region.

SPORT FISHING COMMUNITY EXPANDS IN ASIA
Angling is taking off in Asia. It’s easy to see why as Asia has ample and varied fishing grounds, and there are few bigger thrills in life than reeling in a prize-winning fish. Sitting in the aptly-named “fighting chair” in the cockpit on a sport fishing yacht and playing tug-of-war with a powerful fish on the other end of the line is an exciting challenge.
Fun for the whole family: You don’t need to be a professional angler to enjoy a day out of on the water chasing after big catches. Fishing isn’t only competitive in nature – it’s a sport that transcends age and skill set. Get the kids involved and watch the excitement on their face as they feel the achievement of catching a fish! There is much fun to be had by just going out with the family and casting a line for fun, bringing in a fresh catch that can be eaten for dinner that night, served up in your yacht’s very own kitchen, or relased back into the sea. Whether for competition or relaxed sport, angling is a fun way to spend time on the water with family and friends.
The yachts: Simpson Marine is the official distributor of Viking Yachts in Asia. For more than 50 years, American builder Viking has been the leader in high-performance, luxury sport fishing yachts. Viking offers yachts from 42 to 92 feet in open and enclosed flybridge models, all offering speed, style and comfort. The yachts are designed for fast performance, reaching the fishing grounds before anyone else, but also to be comfortable family yachts with plentiful shade, airconditioning, cosy cabins below decks and ample galleys for preparing the day’s catch. Your Simpson Marine broker can help you find the ideal yacht for your fishing adventures.

GET ON BOARD AND EXPLORE THE WORLD As long as mankind has been building civilisations on land, we’ve built boats to explore the seas beyond our shores. There is something about the call of the water – the pull of seeing what lies past that distant horizon – that can tempt the wanderlust spirit in all of us.
Seventy-one per cent of the world is covered by water, so there is much to see and explore beyond the traditional cruising grounds of Southeast Asia. Planning a circumnavigation can seem overwhelming, especially if you’re new to long-distance cruising, but it doesn’t have to be.
A voyage of discovery A round-the-world voyage is a life-changing experience for you and your family, where you can discover new lands and also new aspects of yourself. Stray from your regular cruising grounds and see something new. Even in Southeast Asia, there are beautiful, untouched places to explore. Discover the still-virginal islands of Indonesia, cruising through the archipelagos of Raja-Ampat or Komodo, where you’ll encounter very few yachts and enjoy some of the most beautiful diving and snorkeling in the world. Sail around the world and see the varied seas and sights, from the lush islands of the South Pacific to the stunning scenery of South America and onto the beloved cruising grounds of the laid back Caribbean and the jet-set Mediterranean – or perhaps heading north to the spectacular fjords of Norway, which are cut by flowing waterfalls and stalwart glaciers. There is so much beauty to see in the world that is best reached by yacht.

SANLORENZO ELITE DAYS
This year’s Sanlorenzo Elite Days event was held in Rapallo and Portofino, Italy. This annual event is an opportunity for Sanlorenzo to share news of latest developments at the shipyard and to display their extensive range of composite, aluminium and steel yachts to over 400 VIP guests from around the world. Highlights included the new model SL86 (which premiered at Cannes Yachting Festival 2015) the unique, award-winning expedition vessel, the 460 Explorer (unveiled at the Monaco Yacht Show 2015) and a special preview of the hybrid SL106 - the first boat of its class with a hybrid propulsion system, representing the green side of yachting excellence. In keeping with its “Made to Measure” approach, Sanlorenzo organised a number of experiences where guests could test the latest in high-tech gadgets, including BMW electric scooters, the Ultralight Seamax seaplane with folding wings, the U-boat Worx superyacht advanced private submarine, and – for those who have everything – the Nimbus drone with special cameras which enable owners or their captains to search for safe anchoring places from the air.

MONTE CARLO YACHTS AND THE NUVOLARI LENARD EXPERIENCE

Nuvolari Lenard studio in Scorzè
The full Monte Carlo Yachts collection is designed by the world-famous Nuvolari Lenard design studio of Italy, which, together with Monte Carlo Yachts, has studied and introduced design features and materials previously used extensively only on megayachts, even on the entry level MCY 65, a mini megayacht, as she has been called by Power & Motor Yacht magazine in the US. Starting with a blank sheet of paper, the first question to consider was functionality. If a boat is beautiful because it sails, then it had to have naval attributes to match. The next question is design, and Monte Carlo Yachts shipyard shared their philosophy in full: It’s the boat that an owner has always dreamed of seeing, of an indefinable type, especially because it is far removed from the stylistic constraints that have dominated the past few decades. Nuvolari Lenard worked with the mission of doing things differently, not repeating previous experiences. That’s why when people look at a Monte Carlo Yachts model, they will see a handsome boat that gives a feeling of security, with safe handling and beautiful lines at the same time. Visiting Nuvolari Lenard studio in Scorze, close to the MCY shipyard, is a one of a kind experience for each owner and we encourage all our Asian buyers to live it for themselves.

NEW YACHTS FOR 2017
LAGOON 42 The Lagoon 42 has a unique style and strong personality. She offers a leisurely space for family entertainment and retains the main features of Lagoon. Available with three or four double cabins, the attention to detail and the use of the volume make this new interior an enjoyable and livable home. An elegant exterior design with flowing curves at the bow highlights the 42’s powerful and dynamic nature. Her design by VPLP also provides a guarantee of high-performance and seaworthiness under sail.
LAGOON SEVENTY 7 The scale of space is what defines Lagoon’s Seventy 7 as a top-of-the range yacht. She offers various combinations of layout, according to the owner’s needs and different functions. Two VIP cabins can become a meeting room or a movie theatre. For interiors, Lagoon selected luxury finishing and materials, which are used by many customised superyachts. Key features include the forward hull door, lowering into a balcony, as well as the large stern platform that serves as a sunbathing area and for launching the tender.
68
BENETEAU OCEANIS YACHT 62
Beneteau’s first model in the new luxury 53-73-foot range, the Oceanis Yacht 62, was launched at Cannes Yachting Festival 2016. A collaboration between Berret Racoupeau Yacht Design and Italian designer Pierangelo Andreani, the cruiser features an eye-catching, energetic sporty hull line, a three or four cabin layout, a tender garage and an aft bathing platform. Six sunbathing beds are spread out across the stern, cockpit, coach roof and foredeck, while the cockpit is also nicely shaded when you want to escape the rays. She will be ready for her official premiere at the Cannes and Annapolis boat shows this autumn.
69
NEW YACHTS FOR 2017
BENETEAU SWIFT TRAWLER 30 Designed for use on the high seas, at less than 10 metres the ST 30 still manages to offer everything required to ensure a safe and enjoyable voyage. She is highly stable, ultra-comfortable and a semi-planing hull design offers up to 200 nautical miles at a 15-knot cruising speed. The fully-glazed wheelhouse offers exceptional 360° views. Her fully-opening transom is a wonderful innovation, which increases the dimensions of the cockpit to five square metres, allowing it to transform into a sea-going terrace.
VIKING 92EB
The Viking 92 Enclosed Bridge Convertible is not only largest of its type to splash from the New Jersey, US builder, but it is also the biggest resininfused sportfishing yacht in the world. This boat has dual mezzanine decks. The latter mezzanine offers both rear-facing lounge seating, along with a second seating area and a table for al fresco dining. LAGOON 450 FLYBRIDGE With the Lagoon 440 as her predecessor, the VPLP architects, together with Lagoon and the Nauta Design design office, succeeded beautifully in developing a new 14-metre catamaran. All this whilst retaining the essential steering station on the flybridge, which is accessible from both sides of the cockpit, a bow lounge area, excellent performance under sail and, of course, comfort in the saloon and cabins. Larger and with a bigger sail area, the Lagoon 450 is offered in three- or four-cabin versions.
