Come we will sing together
Though in the years before us, Once more the ringing song, Life’s skies grow dull and gray, A strain that the coming classes The friends of our youth are scattered Unceasingly shall prolong We journey our lonely way; The praise of our Alma Mater, Sweet memories oft will linger Dear Simpson, will e’er be told Of those dear days of old We’ll cherish thy recollections When beneath the whispering maples And swear by the Red and Gold We flaunted the Red and Gold

All candidates for degrees and those who hold degrees, including college officials, faculty and visiting dignitaries, are attired in traditional cap and gown. The basic color for most caps and gowns is formal black, except for those of the associate degree candidates, who wear gray caps and gowns. Recipients of different degrees wear distinctive tassels on their caps and hoods of various hues draped down the backs of the gowns. The exception is those who hold the doctoral degree in any area wear gold tassels. The list of colors for caps and hoods are as follows:
Agriculture, Maize Arts, Letters, Humanities, White Business, Drab Dentistry, Lilac Economics, Copper Education, Light Blue Engineering, Orange Fine Arts, Brown Forestry, Russet Health, Physical Education and Recreation, Sage Green Home Economics, Maroon Journalism, Crimson Law, Purple Liberal Arts (undesignated degree area), Black
Library and Information Service, Lemon Yellow Medicine, Kelly Green Music, Pink Nursing, Apricot Oratory (Speech), Silver Gray Pharmacy, Olive Green Philosophy, Dark Blue Public and Environmental Affairs, Peacock Blue Science, Golden Yellow Social Work, Citron Theology (Religion), Scarlet Veterinary Science, Gray
Simpson graduate candidates receiving a Master of Arts in Criminal Justice wear a hood with midnight blue velveteen and Master of Arts in Teaching candidates wear a hood with light blue velveteen.
Academic attire of today has a history of nearly eight centuries. In medieval Europe, all townspeople wore long flowing robes and gowns. Materials and colors varied according to the wealth and rank of the individual and were governed by royal decree. Gradually, distinctive gowns for the various professions, trades and guilds were developed.
