Letter

from the

PUBLISHER Veronica Fountain Publisher & Owner

W OW! How quickly this year has gone by. I truly can’t believe it is already November—the elections are here and the holidays are upon us. I kind of want to slow down time—the holidays are the busiest. Something that helps me slow down and find a sense of calm in the hectic, busy days of work, activities, shopping, chores and the extra stressors that can pop up when we’re least expecting them, is meditation and mindfulness. As meditation teacher, Sharon Salzberg, so aptly states, “In the space created by mindfulness we remember our true identity.” Simply Annapolis Publication will concentrate on more meditation and mindfulness in upcoming issues, and I try to make it a regular practice—to slow down, breathe and focus on the present moment. I don’t manage to do it everyday, but I am always amazed at what a difference it makes when I do make it a priority. It can be as simple as becoming aware of the breath, taking a walk in nature, observing the details of a beautiful flower. There are so many easy ways to get lost in the moment—to switch from doing to just be-ing. I find that when I give myself the gift of solitude and stillness—even for just a few minutes—I am able to be kinder to myself and those around me. I hope your holiday season is filled with generosity and kindness. Try to find some moments for yourself, to slow down and be present. Take a deep breath right now—breathe in, hold it, exhale slowly. And consider these words by Danna Faulds –

This is what I have to say to you. Throw off the bonds of your conditioning and fear and celebrate the wonder of being here. Experience this moment as it is, connected by breath and essence to the whole. You couldn’t separate it if you tried. Live this day as if the Earth exhales blessings in your direction, as if trees speak their deepest secrets in your ear, as if bird songs can lift you outside your ordinary state of mind and bring you into truth. Be the creative juice flowing through the universe. Be compassion in action and wholeness in motion. Be silence and stillness, the ocean of love so palpable that not one cell of you disputes the truth that you are that. Be so open to your destiny that it unfurls like a banner in the sky, a sign saying “Live until you die with gratitude, generosity and grace.” Happy Reading!

REAL ESTATE A Comprehensive and Family-Oriented Approach to Real Estate Article by Aya Furin-Campbell Photography by Tracey Marlene

With over 20 years of experience and a passion for helping clients find the perfect place for them, Chad Morton of Maverick Real Estate may be the perfect real estate agent for anyone looking to buy in Delaware, Georgia, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and Washington D.C. Maverick Real Estate was founded five years ago as a family-owned business and has since proven itself to be a beloved and highly successful real estate company. Before working in real estate and eventually founding his own brokerage company, Morton was unaware of his own passion and aptitude for real estate. Formerly a teacher, Morton found that as he was working to inspire his students to go above and beyond, he was simultaneously inspiring himself.

9

|

November/December 2023

“I had high school seniors, so I’m like, you guys can do incredible things! But I wasn’t really doing the things that I wanted to do. [There was] so much more that I felt I had to offer to the world in addition to what I was doing currently,” Morton said, “I realized I need to take my own advice and just get out there. I started a licensed real estate company and did some business that way and then went back into residential real estate and just fell in love with it. I love getting people to first homes. I love selling great homes. I love doing million-dollar deals just as much as $100,000 deals.”

10

|

Now the co-owner of Maverick Real Estate, Morton believes that selling real estate is more than what meets the eye. He is dedicated to his clients because he understands the importance and value of purchasing a home. In speaking on the most rewarding aspect of real estate, Morton said that it was forming connections with his clients and knowing that he is helping them to find the perfect fit for possibly the rest of their lives. “The thing that struck me the most was that they said 96% of the people that you sell a house to in ‘96 are going to die in that house,”

November/December 2023

Morton said, in reference to a statistic that he had learned in one of his classes back in 1996, “Every birthday, anniversary, childbirth grandchild birth, Christmas, holiday family function. This is it. So it’s a life-altering decision that the client is making, and you are a part of it.” Although Washington D.C. is what Morton describes as a transient city, full of people coming and going, he estimates that that number is still as high as 80%, and always keeps that in mind when working towards finding the perfect fit for all of his client’s wants and needs. Morton understands that

11

|

every client is different and that the decisions that they make around housing are extremely impactful to their lives, their family’s lives, and all of the above. He strives to ensure that everything falls into place perfectly when it comes to such life-altering decisions. “We play a big role as a real estate agent. You have no idea of the things that people will share. You are a counselor, you are a motivator, you are a coach, and you are a friend,” Morton said, “And so as real estate agents, we try to keep in touch as best we can with our clients because they become like friends or even family in many cases.”

State Farm INSURANCE Article by Lauryn Forbes

November/December 2023

In the heart of Bowie, one can find a State Farm agency with a unique story. It’s not just a typical insurance agency; it’s a testament to how diverse backgrounds and a passion for helping people can come together to create something exceptional. Cinawaye Elivert, a Chemical Engineering Graduate of MIT with a Masters in Business Administration from the Kenan-Flagler School of Business at UNC Chapel Hill, spent 11 years working in Project Management for companies like IBM and GlaxoSmithKline when she decided to take her career in a different direction. Wanting more time with her family and acknowledging the inherent ceiling when working for someone else, life led her to establish her own State Farm agency in Bowie, Maryland in 2011 where she currently serves clients across the DMV area. In this venture, she has followed in her father’s footsteps, as she grew up working in his insurance office while in high school. With this, they share a passion both in serving the community financially as well as through antique and classic cars - which are highlighted through the various books and models in her office. At Elivert’s State Farm agency, clients can expect a wide range of services, including auto, home, life, health, and even pet insurance. Additionally, her office offers home loans and refinancing opportunities through State Farm’s partnership with Rocket Pro. For those planning their financial future, the agency also provides investment services, helping clients plan for retirement and manage their assets wisely. These are just a few of the multitude of ways Elivert’s office helps serve her clients financially. Elivert emphasizes imparting as much knowledge on her clients as possible, saying, “I think the key is taking a complex product like insurance and breaking it down so that a second-grader can understand it. That’s what I do.” What truly sets her State Farm agency apart is its personal approach to insurance.

15

|

November/December 2023

Clients can expect education and guidance, empowering them with knowledge about the products they’re investing in. Elivert explains her philosophy, “I think it’s an educational approach where I teach my clients about the product. Get it if you want, or let’s put it on a plan and say, maybe not this year, but two years from now I’m gonna need to get this life insurance policy or start planning for my retirement.” Annual household reviews are also offered to ensure that clients fully understand their coverages and can make informed decisions about their insurance needs. Elivert and her team make it easy for clients to reach out, whether by phone, email, virtual meeting, or even text. For those who prefer a more traditional experience, the office is always open for a visit. Customers can enjoy a cup of coffee, and discuss their insurance needs in a stress-free environment. For Elivert, it’s all about creating a space where people feel comfortable doing business. Cinawaye Elivert is an example of how a passion for helping people can create something extraordinary. “Whether they choose me or choose someone else, one wants to find someone that’s going to be able to answer all of their questions, is going to be there to guide them through the entire process, and you know, just be able to make sure that they’re not being taken advantage of,” she says. Her State Farm agency is not just a business; it’s a place where clients receive education, support, and the insurance coverage they need to protect what matters most. For those seeking insurance and financial services in the DMV area, Elivert’s State Farm agency is a beacon of personalized care and expertise. Whether you’re a seasoned insurance pro or just beginning to navigate the world of insurance and investments, Elivert is there to guide you every step of the way.

With roots outside of St. Louis, McAuliffe Chiropractic Office was founded in 1923. 100 years later, the McAuliffe family continues to offer services to clients and families in all walks of life. In Laurel, Maryland, the second branch of McAuliffe Chiropractic Office has been a pillar of health and wellness for families since 1988, started by Dr. Terence McAuliffe. Beginning in 2023, his son Terence McAuliffe Jr. and his wife Lisa McAuliffe have taken over, continuing this family legacy. “We really do actually like keep it in the family,” Terence shares. While him and his wife are now the current owners, Dr. Terence McAuliffe Sr. still works in the office, as well as his wife. For over a 30 years, McAuliffe Chiropractic Office has provided comprehensive chiropractic care to Laurel and its surrounding communities. They are a family-based practice, with Terence stating that their “mission or goal is to take care of entire families. So

20

our doctors work with everything from newborns to pregnant moms, to teenagers, sports injuries, car accidents, kind of everything in between. So it’s kind of our philosophy, our family taking care of other people’s families”. Though their services are widely varied, they specialize in wellness care, striving to help their patients lead pain-free lives without resorting to excessive medications or surgery. Terence notes that the doctors of their practice “have always taken extra certifications and trainings, to make sure that we can handle the entire family and treat them with the best care possible”. With this, patients can rest assured that all concerns will be taken care of by professionals that are not only knowledgeable, but committed to the health of their entire family unit. Where McAuliffe Chiropractic Office differs from others in the field is their commitment to patient convenience. They understand the demands of modern

November/December 2023

life and have designed their practice to accommodate busy families. Terence elaborates, “We really pride ourselves on having flexible appointments and flexible hours. We’re here before most people start their days and here after most people are done with work. Our thing is, you know, everyone should feel like they have time for their health care”. Chiropractic care is often misunderstood, with misconceptions about pain, legitimacy, and more. Terence clarifies, “Chiropractic is actually not only super natural, but it’s really actually gentle, especially when done in our office and done correctly.” Before anything, patients are given a full physical exam to make sure that they are a proper candidate for treatment. With this, their doctors are also fully certified to do physical therapy, easing the road to recovery for patients with more severe injuries. At McAuliffe Chiropractic Office, the focus is on ensuring each patient’s comfort and well-being. To conclude, McAuliffe Chiropractic Office stands as a testament to the enduring power of familyfocused healthcare. With over a century of collective experience, they continue to provide Laurel and its surrounding communities with compassionate, effective, and convenient chiropractic care.

PINK CADILLAC MERGES INTO THE HOLIDAY SPIRIT Photography by Veronica Fountain

Article by: Aiyana Fewell

November/December 2023

Introduction The holiday season is sprinkled with celebration, community, tradition and, of course, food. To gain a new perspective on the magic behind the traditions that make this time of year truly unforgettable, we had the opportunity to speak with a local business owner who is maintaining traditions in an unconventional way. In this article, we dive into Executive Chef Darian Brown’s culinary journey to the emerging business, Pink Cadillac Catering and Cuisine as well as advice for creating your own traditions during the holidays through food.

Meet the Chef Darian Brown is a Prince George’s County, Maryland native. After graduating high school, she attended Prince George’s County Community College and decided to enroll in the Hospitality program. Brown would later attend the University of Maryland Eastern Shore in Princess Anne County, MD. After college she worked at a plethora of establishments including becoming the Executive Chef at West Virginia University prior to starting Pink Cadillac Catering and Cuisine.

About Pink Cadillac Pink Cadillac Catering and Cuisine is a home-based business in Prince George’s County, MD. The menu items range from chicken wings to braised short ribs, collard greens and more. The business offers a variety of services ranging from dinner for two, to vending and concessions for sporting events, meal prep, pop-up events and more. Brown herself specializes in Commercial Food Production, Banquet Catering and Food Safety. She also hosts workshops, creates social media content and offers consultation to help others interested in pursuing a career in the culinary arts. Brown opened Pink Cadillac Catering and Cuisine 4 years ago under the name Glam Gourmet Catering, but she figured that her business needed a new name. “I wanted to rebrand and I just thought ‘Pink Cadillac Catering’. When I was a little girl, my grandmother always talked about having a pink Cadillac and how famous they were.” Brown chimes. “The Cadillac is a classic car. I always thought of my grandmother as a really classy lady, so I just felt very inspired by her and she is also the one who taught me how to cook.” You can practically hear the grin forming on Darian’s face as she beams about the very woman that molded her love for cooking. Her grandmother, Mrs. Audrey.“For me, from early childhood, I always went to my grandmother’s house in Richmond, Virginia for the holidays. When we walk in the door, my grandmother has sweet potato pies cooking. She’s probably just finished the pound cake and she’s icing the chocolate cake. remarked Brown. My grandmother really knows how to make a spread.”

|

November/December 2023

Navigating the Pandemic Challenge During the Holiday Season The COVID-19 pandemic has reshaped culinary practices, and Brown’s journey to culinary entrepreneurship was no exception. Brown shares how she adapted to these changes while preserving the essence of holiday dining during very unconventional times.“I took advantage of the pandemic. It gave me the opportunity to really take my career to a different level and transition into the chef role. I took some classes and got some certifications on how to handle food specifically related to COVID-19,” Brown explains.“The certifications made me a unicorn when people were not interested in coming out of the house, even during the holidays. It was scary times, I just took a leap of faith.” Brown is living proof that, even during times of uncertainty, it’s important to utilize the tools at your disposal to truly elevate your craft and maintain a sense of normalcy during the holidays.

Tips for Cooking at Home Chef Brown offers a few tips for people looking to create special meals for the holiday and other practices to incorporate in everyday cooking tasks. “When you look at the ingredients for seasonings like Cajun seasoning, it’ll be garlic powder, some kind of bell pepper, maybe paprika,” explains Brown. When you’re trying to build a flavor profile, look at the ingredients to let you know which you need to incorporate more.” Sometimes the difference between a basic and a great flavor profile is the source of your ingredients. “I use salt, pepper and roasted garlic for so many things, during the holidays or any time.” Brown says. “Incorporate fresh herbs. Even something as simple as fresh parsley can take your food to another level.” Experimenting with different ingredients and culinary techniques is a great way to enhance your culinary knowledge at home.

Conclusion The holiday season is a time to enjoy the ins-and-outs of cooking, laughing and creating unforgettable memories. Thanks to the guidance and expertise of Darian Brown, there’s a myriad of tips and tricks at your disposal. Whether you’re a culinary virtuoso or you’re just getting started in the kitchen, sharing these experiences, tips and traditions can help cultivate traditions unique to your family during the holiday season. Chef Brown said it best: “Do your research. I recommend taking inspiration from other places because that’s what cooking is. Everybody has their own version of something and you can find yours. Just don’t stop.”

BEST LEADER - CLINTON TRUESDALE

BOWIE, MD —Imagine a party center where every member of the family can have fun, offering games for the kids, drinks for the parents and memories for all. Well, there’s no need for imagination with Bowie Town Center’s Party HQ. With an arcade, bowling, laser tag and virtual reality games, Maryland’s newest indoor activity center offers plenty of fun for all ages. The center also houses an indoor restaurant for families to eat and a full bar for the parents’ treat. Co-founders Rodney Chambers and Ronald Covington said they wanted to build a space where parents, kids and all members of the family could have fun under the same roof. “When there are kids like birthday parties and stuff like that, being parents ourselves, it’s not really a lot for parents to do when the kids are doing their thing,” Covington said. “We were like, man, we would really love to build a place where kids can go do their thing. Parents can still be a part of it, if they want to, or they can break off and go to another part of the facility and enjoy themselves.” The new Party HQ houses two levels of arcade games, D.C. battle-themed laser tag, 10 bowling lanes, laser tag and one of only two Hologate virtual reality games in the entire state of Maryland.
