Originally from Indiana, Shana moved to the Washington, D.C. metro area in 2008 after being stationed in Germany. She and her family chose Bowie, Maryland as home, where she’s lived for the past 17 years. After a distinguished 20-year military career, Shana retired from Fort Belvoir, Virginia in 2015. The next chapter of her life would prove to be just as purposeful.

Her interest in real estate began early, after inheriting her mother’s home at a young age.

That experience planted a seed, but it wasn’t until after retirement that she actively pursued it as a career. Managing her own investment property further fueled her passion, and after attending several real estate seminars, she realized becoming licensed would unlock even greater opportunities.

In 2020, Shana officially joined eXp Realty, earning her license in D.C., Maryland, and Virginia. The pandemic hit just months later but she didn’t miss a beat. “Homes were still selling. Buyers were still buying. We just had to wear masks and sanitize,” she recalls.

At Seta Oasis, it’s all about the vibes. The new Caribbean-fusion restaurant blends savory flavors with a relaxing, welcoming atmosphere, creating the ideal escape.

Located on Georgia Avenue in Washington, D.C.’s Petworth neighborhood, Seta Oasis’ menu features diverse Caribbean dishes ranging from luscious curry gold to tender oxtail. With inclusivity in mind, the restaurant makes it a priority to cater to most dietary restrictions, offering a plethora of yummy vegan dishes.

Melissa Swaby, who co-owns the food spot alongside its founder—her husband, Anthony Swaby, describes the pair’s desire to have a restaurant that caters to a variety of people.

“He just wanted to create a restaurant that had an environment with the Caribbean culture and vibe and also provided certain foods, where people that had those restrictions could enjoy,” she explains, describing her husband’s vision for Seta Oasis.

Growing up around her grandmother, who was deeply involved with catering and baking, Swaby is no stranger to the restaurant industry.

However, when it comes to experience in the industry, she said that’s where her husband shines the brightest.

“This is his dream. He wanted to do this all of his life,” she says. “He wanted to own his own restaurant and be able to share with others the type of food that he felt like was health conscious and also had flavor.”

Swaby said that Anthony Swaby wanted to use his experience and love for food as a way of sharing his culture and love with others. The pair makes it their mission to keep customer service at the forefront of their business, ensuring that every customer who comes to Seta Oasis has enjoyed their time.

Whether you want to lounge on the patio with fresh squeezed juice or party in the VIP room with friends, Seta Oasis sets the perfect tone for any occasion.

“We say it’s a vibe, so when you come to see the Oasis, you’re gonna get a vibe,” Swaby said.

“You’re gonna have a good time. Relax.”

With its tropical-inspired decor and vibrant watercolors, Seta Oasis is more than just a restaurant—it’s an experience. A place to get away and just relax, featuring original art pieces from Swaby herself.

Swaby’s artwork ties back to the couple’s journey with the restaurant and how far they have come.

The main dining room showcases some of her latest art pieces, many of which prominently display circular designs.

“I’ve been stuck on this circle thing and to me, the circle is like coming full circle,” she shares.

“Being on this path for a long time, you’re kind of wondering where this path is going to lead you, and then eventually, you get full.”

Above all, Swaby wants customers to come, relax, enjoy their meal, and have something nice to look at while they dine.

As the couple eagerly prepares for the Seta Oasis’ grand opening on April 12, they look forward to welcoming the community and sharing a part of their culture with the city of D.C. “It’s a vibe. We want people to come and relax and feel like they’re in an Oasis and not feel like they’re in a regular restaurant,” Swaby said. “We want to provide a little different experience than the others.”

FOR THOSE LOOKING FOR ADVICE ON PLANT CARE OR HOPING TO REVITALIZE THEIR GARDEN SPACE, JACKIE’S GARDENING GEMS SERVES AS A ONE-STOP SHOP FOR PLANT CARE AND GARDENING NEEDS. Founded by owner Jackie Foster, Jackie’s Gardening Gems is a local business that provides professional plant care and maintenance services to homes and offices. As a trained botanist, Foster built her business on her passion for gardening from a young age and the desire to help others.

“From an early age, I was always growing things.

We always had a backyard garden,” said Foster about her love for gardening and plants. “I later earned my degree in botany; that solidified my appreciation for plants and how much plants impact our lives. Over the years, my love for plants and gardening blossomed into this business.”

“The business started as a hobby, with frequent posting of my houseplants and vegetable gardens on social media.” Foster continued. “I was encouraged by the positive feedback but also received many questions about how to grow and care for certain plants. I discovered that there was a need and decided to create this business to address the needs.”

“I’m big on environmentalism and sustainability in the garden,” said Foster on her “Gardening Gems.”

“I promote eco-friendly ways to grow abundant gardens and deter pests while being kind to the environment and leaving a small carbon footprint.

We should reuse, recycle, and repurpose things that we use in the kitchen for gardening. Like using kitchen scraps to make compost-rich garden soil.”

She started by giving gardening advice to friends and Facebook/Instagram followers, but Foster quickly developed the business into a plant caretaking service, providing gardening enthusiasts care options ranging from pest control and repotting to consultation services.

Foster’s idea to offer plant rental services and care goes further than improving the aesthetics of personal space; she developed her business on the belief that plants can improve well-being by reducing stress and improving productivity and focus.

“I offer a virtual complimentary consultation to all new clients to help determine their specific needs.

My services include repotting to larger pots, scheduled plant maintenance, and plant sitting,” said Foster on the services her business provides.

“I also identify and apply appropriate corrective measures to mitigate common houseplant and garden pests.”

“Later on in life, I found out the positive impacts that caring for houseplants has on our mental health. It relaxes you and reduces anxiety while encouraging mindfulness and good vibes. There’s even scientific proof that confirms the airpurifying properties of houseplants,” said Foster on the positive impact of plants on people’s lives, something she has seen firsthand when servicing her clients.

Along with plant care services, Jackie’s Gardening Gems is looking to expand its business into subscription-based maintenance services and plant rentals for businesses and office spaces.

“I want to expand my business to offer subscription services to doctors’ offices, small hotel chains, and realtors staging new homes for sale,” said Foster. “So it’s essentially a plant rental service where I provide beautiful indoor plants, maintain them, and swap them out periodically to match the season.”

Along with plant services, Foster also offers “Gardening Gems,” tips and tricks for people to create their own sustainable gardens in their own homes, a way to both improve their home gardens and be environmentally conscious.

“A self-proclaimed ‘black thumb’ client of mine was gifted several expensive, exotic plants that she promised to keep alive. In the beginning, she had no idea what to do. She was clueless,” recounted Foster. “Over time, I was able to teach her how to care for her eclectic plant collection.

Before long, she was able to actually experience the joys and relaxation of caring for her plants: watering, pruning, and cleaning the leaves. “ In the end, she expressed with joy her gratitude for my service. Her words, “Wow, this is relaxing. My plants are thriving; I actually know what I’m doing now.”

With spring just around the corner, Jackie’s Gardening Gems is preparing for another season of providing plant care services to the people of the DMV area.

A Cleveland Clinic study found that only three out of five men get annual physicals from others, and over forty percent of men only visit the doctor when they have a serious medical condition.

The reluctance to receive medical help is a potential reason why men's life expectancy is 5.5 years less than women’s, according to the CDC, and a reason why health issues like high blood pressure and diabetes, as well as serious diseases like prostate and lung cancer, affect men at a higher rate than women.

So, why are men not going to visit their doctors?

To some medical professionals, the personal embarrassment or shame that comes with a potential diagnosis discourages men from visiting them.

“Depending on the patient's culture particularly, it can be something that is considered an embarrassment, maybe a lack of manhood or a failing of the person themselves,” said Dr. Phulc Train, a radiation oncologist who works with the University of Maryland. “I think generally the men are much less likely to share about personal issues, particularly health issues.”

For others, the issue stems from limited access to doctors, compounded by daily responsibilities and socioeconomic disparities.

For 17 years

, all Lawerence Marshall knew was working in the banking world. (Bank teller, banker, teller manager, senior banker. ) He started at Suntrust, before BB&T and Suntrust merged to become Truist Financial, and he worked in several positions — bank teller, banker, teller manager, and senior bank.

He didn’t plan to become an agent at New York Life Insurance Company, where he would focus on protection first and then help clients reach their life goals.

“When I was approached by New York Life Insurance, it came full circle,” Marshall said. “At the bank, I wanted to do more for those people, and now I’m in a role where I can do for people— helping [them] be prepared to not have to go through some of the struggles that came about because of COVID-19.”

A couple decades ago, juicing was something that only overzealously healthconscious people did. Today, it's much more popular. People are juicing to lose weight, to cleanse and to consume more nutrients. Juicers are sold not only via infomercials, but can easily be found in department stores. Juice bars have popped up not just in hip California neighborhoods, but even in the Midwest.

Like many aspects of nutrition and weight loss, there is not a one-size-fits-all answer to the topic of juicing. Read on to find out if juicing can benefit you and your goals.

What Exactly Is Juicing, Anyway?

Juicing is the process of extracting the juice from fresh fruits and vegetables. A small kitchen appliance known as a juicer is used to extract the juice; these can range in price from $50-$500. Drinking the juice of fruits and vegetables means consuming their water and much of their vitamin and mineral content; however, the pulp, or fiber, which also has many health benefits, is removed. (Note: Some high-powered juicers do retain most of the pulp in the juice, thus resulting in a thicker juice.)

There are a few main types of juicers out on the market today: ''FAST'' JUICERS

"SLOW" JUICERS

''WHOLE FOOD'' JUICERS

This type of juicer is one of the most common varieties on the market. A fast juicer (or centrifugal juicer) grinds your fruits and veggies and then pushes the extracted juice through a strainer by spinning at a very high speed. The pulp is extracted and ejected into a special compartment, usually near the back of the juicer. This type of juicer produces pulpfree juice very quickly, but it also tends to extract less juice than other types of juicers. It also generates more heat than other types, which some experts say could compromise the nutrients in the produce.

This juicer produces juice in two steps, using one or two gears.

First, it crushes the fruits and veggies, and then it presses out the juice. These types of juicers take longer to produce juice, and they tend to be more expensive than most centrifugal juicers.

However, they are said to extract more nutrients. They yield a thick juice with more pulp, yet still produce some pulp extract in a separate compartment.

These juicers are reminiscient of blenders. Using sharp blades at high speeds, they are able to pulverize whole fruits and veggies into liquid. These do not have a separate pulp compartment.

Fresh juices should not be confused with smoothies, which are usually made in a blender, food processor or highpowered juicer and include the fibrous pulp of the fruit and vegetable ingredients (and can often contain a blend of fruit, vegetables, juice, dairy and other ingredients).

How Juice Stacks Up against Whole Foods Proponents of juicing like to say that juice is more nutritious than simply consuming fruits and vegetables. But does that argument really hold up? To compare the nutrition of whole fruits and vegetables to juice, it is important to compare apples to apples (no pun intended). For accuracy, this means comparing them based on equal portions of weight (in grams), which is what we've done in the chart below. If using a juicer or blender that retains the pulp, the end result will be similar to the whole fruit.

When Chanda Littlefield first began her real estate journey, America was in the beginning stages of an economic crisis. The Great Recession had just started, the housing market was uncertain, and many believed pursuing a career in real estate was risky.

Where others saw an obstacle, Littlefield saw an opportunity to cultivate a brand, a brand that would later be known all over the DMV nearly two decades later.

There are so many places to visit and explore, whether for the rich culture, the tourist attractions, the local food, or all of the above.

Here are a few destinations you can add to your list for summer 2025. Let’s start with places where you may need a Real ID to get to (as of May 7) but not a passport.

Chicago, IL Chicago comes alive in the summer with music festivals and a variety of food selections. The nationally known Lollapalooza festival brings in thousands of fans, while the Taste of Chicago Festival offers an array of different flavors from restaurants and a culinary journey through the city’s diverse food scene.
