“I have attended a few seminars on Estate Planning, and I was aware that I needed to start this process sooner than later. I was fortunate to attend an Estate Planning seminar presented by Suren Adams. I was very impressed with her professionalism, her impeccable knowledge of the subject matter, and the ability to present the information in an understandable language. Suren’s noteworthy credentials speak for themselves, and her service costs are comparable to others in the area. I would highly recommend her service to anyone who is interested in the Estate Planning process. I guarantee that once you attend Suren’s seminar, you will not delay in starting the process today!”

Founded in 2008, Mid-Atlantic Realty has established itself as a trusted full-service real estate firm, serving Maryland, Virginia, and the District of Columbia. With a team of 15 agents covering the Mid-Atlantic region led by founder Bernard Mizelle, the firm handles residential, commercial, industrial, and investment properties, while maintaining a strong focus on residential buyers and sellers.
The company’s origins trace back to its Mizelle’s decision to step away from corporate America after 17 years. “I had gotten bored with my life, and I wanted something that was a little bit more entrepreneurial,” he says. His
background as a business banker at Wells Fargo and Citibank provided him with valuable insight into entrepreneurship, ultimately leading him to real estate. After cutting his teeth at Long and Foster for four years, he branched out on his own and launched MidAtlantic Realty.
Mid-Atlantic’s consumer base primarily includes first-time buyers and repeat customers, as well as those upgrading from condos to townhouses or moving into singlefamily homes. With this in mind, the firm provides guidance that goes beyond the initial purchase. “Real estate is all about location,”
Bernard advises. “Find out where you really want to live and kind of view your home as: where do I see myself 10–15 years down the road?”
He explains that many people assume they’ll stay in a home for only a few years, but “a few years turns into a decade or two.” For firsttime buyers, he suggests what he calls the “stair step approach”: starting small, building equity, selling, and then leveraging that equity to purchase something larger.
What sets Mid-Atlantic Realty apart is its emphasis on customer service. The firm often helps clients prepare their homes before listing, connecting them with contractors for updates and renovations. “Prior to putting it on the market, we will help them come up with the plan and provide contractors that can do the updating and renovation of their property. And when we do that, we usually get them about 20 to 25% more in future equity and sales price,” Bernard explains. With a network of electricians, plumbers, roofers, and general contractors, the firm ensures clients see added value before selling.
Beyond services, the company is committed to treating clients like family. “We really try to make each and every customer like they’re
a family member, and we want to take care of them, because we know that this is - for 99% of the population - the biggest purchase that they’re ever going to do.” This approach extends to helping buyers think long-term about where they want to live and how their purchase fits into their future.
Mid-Atlantic Realty also stands out as a multilingual firm, with agents fluent in Spanish, Korean, and Chinese, which is a true asset for serving the region’s diverse communities.

For Bernadette Fobbs, the founder of Apryl Showers, the mission began long before the business itself. It started when she was nine years old, watching her grandmother quietly serve people in need. “She simply cared about her community,” she recalls. “She showed me that one act can make a difference in someone’s life.” That early lesson in compassion shaped the path she walks today.
Bernadette served 37 years in the Army, and throughout her military career, she continued to give to those experiencing homelessness. But her perspective shifted after a deployment to Afghanistan in 2010. There, the simple privilege of a shower (taken in trailers with limited water) felt profound. When she returned home, she began asking people in need what they wanted, instead of assuming. Over and over, she heard the same response: a safe place to shower. Many women told her “I would love to be able to take a shower and feel safe.” That safety, the ability to tend to one’s most vulnerable moments without fear, became central to her vision.
In 2015, while stationed in Washington State, the idea crystallized: a mobile shower unit that could go directly to those who needed it most. But between active duty and constant relocation, she wasn’t yet in a position to build it. “God had to show me what was really important,” she explains. “It wasn’t just getting the shower trailer built, but the true mission behind it.”
After retiring in July 2021, she officially established Apryl Showers the following month. By 2022, the first shower trailer was built and operating. “We take our capability to the people who need it,” she says. “We meet them where they’re at.”
Since then, Apryl Showers has become a consistent presence in the community. For example, in Baltimore, where on the third Saturday of each month from April through October, individuals can count on access to showers, toiletries, clothing, food, and kindness. “Consistency in their life is something that they haven’t seen,” she notes.

Bernadette emphasizes that her mission is about more than hygiene. “There’s so much more to what the homeless need. Just somebody giving a sandwich or a meal on Thanksgiving… They need us 365 days a year when they’re out there.” Dignity is at the heart of everything she does. She trains volunteers to begin every interaction by asking someone’s name, which serves an intentional step toward making each person feel seen. “Their smile, hello, and ‘what’s your name?’ means more to them than the dollar you gave them,” she says. “These are people. These are our neighbors.” In this, she is firm about how society should view homelessness. “Treat them as if they’re family because they are, and treat them with dignity. No one says, ‘Hey, I want to be a homeless person.’ That’s no one’s goal. Being homeless is not their identity. It is just their current situation.” Looking ahead, she hopes
to expand Apryl Showers with a second mobile shower unit and additional outreach teams.
Those who would like to support the mission can get involved by volunteering or donating through the organization’s website. Financial contributions help supply the most requested items: socks, underwear, soap, and T-shirts. In-kind donations are equally welcome. Bernadette welcomes calls from anyone interested in volunteering or supporting Apryl Showers, happy to personally discuss how they can get involved.
For Bernadette, the mission remains simple and deeply personal: “Every one matters. Every person, every shower, every interaction.” Through Apryl Showers, Bernadette Fobbs has transformed a lifetime of compassion into tangible, life-changing action, reminding all of us that small acts of care can ripple into profound impacts.
Realtor Arelia Douglas ensures her clients understand the power of property ownership.

For decades, Arelia Douglas has firmly believed that owning property is one of the most significant investments one can make to achieve personal goals and establish a legacy for family. With extensive experience navigating the ever-evolving real estate market, she combines her in-depth industry knowledge with a heartfelt dedication to her clients. For Arelia, every transaction goes beyond mere buying and selling; it is an opportunity to educate and empower individuals and families about the true value of building financial wealth and stability.
Article By Alyson Turner

Arelia’s initial interest in homeownership and real estate was influenced by her paternal grandfather, who possessed multiple properties and farmland. As a child, she fondly recalls learning to grow and harvest crops under his guidance, while instilling in her a deep respect for land and its potential. Her paternal family owned several properties in Virginia and Washington D.C. Her parents were raised in Alexandria, VA, and later moved to Washington, DC. This influenced Arelia to earn her licenses in these regions. The farmland previously owned by her grandfather was eventually sold, and the properties constructed on that land have consistently appreciated in value over the years.

Arelia also learned the intangible value of enhancing the community and her love for interior design from her maternal grandmother who had 12 children. Her grandmother loved to cook and welcomed the community into her home for a hot meal. She fostered love and a sense of value in the community. All her children were talented with the gift of giving, as cooks, seamstress, and event planners.
Throughout her distinguished 30-year career with the Environmental Protection Agency, she recognized the critical importance of safeguarding the land, water, and the air we breathe. Arelia felt a calling to obtain her Maryland real estate license. Her unwavering faith provided stability and resilience during challenging times in the real estate market. She remembers being told she would be given properties and prayed for
guidance. Although she obtained her real estate license around the time of the market crash, she has maintained her license and her faith for the past 18 years. Even when many opted out of real estate, Arelia persevered, keeping her real estate license active as the market began to recover. Years later, during the pandemic, another significant economic shift created apprehension among both buyers and sellers. Nevertheless, Arelia continued to encourage her clients to focus on the benefits of owning real estate. In 2022, she was inspired to position herself and remain focused on her investment goals. Despite the interest rates having risen six times that year, this did not deter from obtaining her personal investment goals, yet she persevered and was grateful she did. She was able to purchase that investment property at the height of the interest

increases. Her experience now enables her to motivate clients to achieve homeownership despite economic challenges.
For the past eight years, Arelia has proudly been a part of Porter House International Realty Group, who believes in creating a supportive real estate team that genuinely uplifts one another to serve their clients, encapsulated in their motto, “Because You Deserve the Best.” The Porter House Team is committed to delivering exceptional customer service while maintaining professionalism in all aspects of their work. Arelia’s passion for home decor allows her to help clients envision the full potential of their spaces, and one of her standout strengths is advising sellers on cost-effective ways to enhance their listings.

Whether she is guiding first-time home buyers or sellers, assisting older adults transitioning to senior living, presenting at the Porter House Homebuyers Expo, or sharing the transformative value of homeownership, Arelia pours her heart and soul into her work. She aims to empower people to achieve homeownership. Many clients find the real estate process illuminating, feeling supported and confident as they navigate the complexities of buying or selling their homes. Even in the face of rising interest rates, Arelia firmly believes that everyone needs a place to call home—so why not own it!
Purchasing a home offers individuals the opportunity to benefit from their investment, allowing them the freedom to create a personal
sanctuary. This investment holds both monetary and sentimental value, enriching lives in countless ways.
Arelia’s faith has been a cornerstone of her journey, enabling her to minister to the community through real estate. She emphasizes that owning a home fosters a profound sense of belonging and stability. While people frequently move and adapt, having a home provides a rich history to share with family which is achievable through the process of real estate ownership. Deeply influenced by biblical teachings that inspire service to others, Arelia is dedicated to reconnecting individuals with their roots in land while guiding them on their unique paths toward homeownership and financial wealth for generations to come.

Bowie’s Premier Destination for Preventative Wellness, Longevity & Holistic Transformation

Rooted in more than two decades of experience in the nursing profession, The Vitamin Suite was born from both clinical expertise and a deep personal commitment to redefining how individuals approach longterm wellness. Founder Lakel Ebb, BSN, RN, NC, began her healthcare career as an ER Nursing Technician and has since spent 17 years as a Registered Nurse. Her experience spans multiple specialty areas including emergency room care, trauma, case management, and nursing education as a clinical instructor. Throughout these roles, she witnessed firsthand how chronic illness often begins long before patients reach the hospital.
“Conventional medicine saves lives every day,” Ebb explains. “But there is a gap where preventative care and true wellness should exist. People deserve to understand how to live well, not just recover when things go wrong.”
It was this belief—paired with her own transformation through holistic modalities like vitamin therapy and red light therapy—that inspired her to build what is now Bowie’s first comprehensive, luxury wellness center dedicated to cellular health and preventative care.
A Year of Transformation: The Vitamin Suite Celebrates Its First Anniversary As The Vitamin Suite enters 2025, the center has quickly become a trusted destination for working professionals, entrepreneurs, caregivers, and athletes seeking targeted, high-quality wellness solutions. The Vitamin Suite’s clients primarily range from ages 35 to 65+, though the center welcomes anyone seeking optimized health, improved vitality, weight management solutions, or enhanced athletic performance.
Safety Meets Luxury: A Medically Led, ClientCentered Experience Every client who begins IV or IM therapy undergoes a comprehensive health assessment conducted by a licensed nurse practitioner. This screening ensures safety, identifies deficiencies, and allows the care team to tailor each treatment plan.
The practice operates with a structured medical team, including:
• Remote telehealth providers
• A medical director
• Licensed nurses
• Administrative and wellness support staff
This high level of clinical oversight is a key differentiator within the wellness industry.
A Unique Maryland Model: Supporting Nurses & Expanding Access What sets The Vitamin Suite apart is its licensure through the Maryland Office of Healthcare Quality as a Nurse Referral Agency. This allows the company to build a directory of mobile nurses and create new career pathways for healthcare professionals entering the wellness space.
This innovative model supports the center’s expanding vision, which includes:
• Mobile IV and in-home infusions
• A Senior Wellness Program launching in 2026
• Holistic preventive care services delivered directly to the community
Ebb’s dual mission is clear: elevate community wellness while empowering nurses to build successful, independent careers in the holistic health industry.

Drawing, Painting, Visual / Media

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Cedric Moore a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Cedric, really happy you were able to join us today and we’re looking forward to sharing your story and insights with our readers. Let’s start with the heart of it all –purpose. How did you find your purpose?
To understand how I found my purpose, it’s important to first understand the pain I experienced in my early adulthood. After graduating from North Carolina A&T State University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science in 2016, I faced a period of intense depression. Despite numerous interviews and leveraging my network, I struggled to land a job in the tech field. During this challenging time, I turned to journaling, recording my thoughts, emotions, words of encouragement, and Bible verses. These entries helped me stay positive, and I kept them close, hoping that one day I could help someone else through their dark season.
A few months later, when I finally secured a position in corporate America, I felt a strong duty and desire to encourage others and help them find positivity. This led to the creation of my blog series, “Moore
Ambition,” aimed at recent college graduates and young professionals. The blog provided guidance for navigating a turbulent and uncertain period as they ventured into a new world of possibilities.
This is where my purpose of encouraging others was born. As I matured, I sought various avenues to achieve this goal, which led to my interest in storytelling through film and media. I wanted to visually tell the stories of young adults facing post-grad struggles and adversity in corporate America, among other topics.
It’s amazing to see how my purpose of encouragement has manifested in multiple ways. From a blog series to film and now art, I had no idea that God would use so many different methods to accomplish His plan.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I am an artist, filmmaker, motivational speaker, mental health advocate, philanthropist, voiceover actor, author, and former Cybersecurity engineer. In 2022, I took a leap of faith and left my fulltime Cybersecurity job to pursue my purpose wholeheartedly. That same year, I founded DreamPower Media, a multimedia production company focused on relevant and impactful storytelling through documentary series. DreamPower Media aims to expand into animation, feature films,
novels, and children’s book series, striving to lead the way in narrative change and innovation.
While film and media were my initial focus, I have recently rediscovered my passion for art, which has become my primary focus. I stopped drawing when I was 12 and started again at age 29 in October 2023, marking a 17-year hiatus. Now, I am fully committed to my art, especially after witnessing significant growth in just nine months. As a child, graphite portraits were my specialty, and they served as my segue back into art. Currently, I am enjoying creating figurative art and experimenting with different mediums such as charcoal, acrylic, and oil paints. Despite the long break, it feels like I am right where I am supposed to be.
As my skill set continues to evolve, so do my goals and aspirations as an artist. I am currently building my portfolio and creating art that moves my soul and excites me. Documenting my process and telling my story as an artist is crucial to me. Therefore, I am intertwining my film and art initiatives by visually documenting my art journey. This documentation will produce short films for a series titled “The BĀSMNT,” which DreamPower Media will launch in Summer 2024. The series will tell intriguing and thought-provoking stories around each painting I have created, providing my audience with insight and inspiration behind my artwork. Animating children’s books and cartoons under DreamPower Media is another way I plan to seamlessly integrate film and art for my brand. Additionally, I aim to engage with the youth in the Washington D.C. Metropolitan area, creating programs that offer alternatives to the various distractions in their environments, ultimately allowing them to express themselves through art. Mural art is another goal of mine; I am deeply inspired by large pieces
of work I see throughout the city, and I aspire to have my own work displayed on the sides of buildings to inspire others. Collaborating with fashion brands to design unique clothing and shoes with my artistic designs, designing album covers for prominent musicians, and showcasing my work in popular museums are a few of my personal goals. Wherever my work goes, I hope it moves people in ways they haven’t experienced before, and I aim to achieve this on the biggest stages possible.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
The first quality that has been impactful on my journey is time management. As an entrepreneur, you have the freedom to create the life you desire, but this also means your results are directly tied to your actions. Without proper time management, including creating to-do lists, setting hard deadlines, and establishing monthly, quarterly, and yearly goals, it’s easy to waste time, become distracted, and lose track of progress. This can create the illusion that you’re not moving in the right direction, leading to discouragement.
Secondly, it’s crucial to journal your journey. It’s easy to get caught up in the day-to-day tasks and constantly look ahead to the next goal, but it’s important to take a moment to acknowledge how far you’ve come. Celebrating small wins is essential, and journaling provides a tangible record of your progress. This allows you to look back and say, “I accomplished everything I set out to do; this deserves a celebration.”
Lastly, as an artist, I find it important to let inspiration find you. To do this, you must be open to being inspired by your surroundings. Spend time in environments that nurture you mentally, emotionally, and physically to keep your creativity

sharp and flowing. For me, staying inspired involves being around other creatives, visiting local galleries, and taking vacations.
For those early in their journey, my advice is to prioritize time management, document your progress through journaling, and remain open to inspiration by immersing yourself in enriching environments.
Before we go, maybe you can tell us a bit about your parents and what you feel was the most impactful thing they did for you?
The most impactful thing my family did for me was support my decision to leave corporate America and pursue my purpose. Since my
teenage years, they emphasized the importance of having a tech job in today’s economy due to the job security it provided. So when it was time to voice my desire to leave the tech field, I was extremely nervous about their reaction. Surprisingly, their response was the complete opposite of what I feared. They believed wholeheartedly that I knew exactly what I was doing and supported me 100%, even to this day.
Now that I am focused on art, this is the most supportive and engaged I have ever seen my parents. I believe my faith has inspired them to dream bigger and believe in greater possibilities. This journey isn’t just for me; it’s to inspire everyone around me, even those I don’t know, to realize that their purpose is worth living for.

Kicking off the new year with Dry January?
HERE ARE SIX TIPS FOR SUCCESS
Dry January is a time when people take a break from drinking and examine their relationship with alcohol. There are many potential reasons to take advantage of this time to examine your relationship with alcohol. It may be part of a New Year’s resolution to incorporate healthy behaviors into your routine. You may have overindulged during the holidays, and it affected your sleep and energy.
Whatever the reason, taking a break from alcohol for an entire month provides you with an opportunity to assess your patterns of alcohol consumption and how they affect you physically and mentally. It may also provide the space to cultivate alternatives for relaxing, socializing, and coping with stress. As a result, you may experience benefits such as improved sleep and vitality, or waking without the fatigue, malaise, and upset stomach of a hangover. You may also find that you lose weight without the extra calories from alcohol. Participants in Dry January have also noted positive effects on their relationships as well as saving money.
If you participate in Dry January, here are some tips to help keep you on track:
• Identify why you choose to drink alcohol—for example, is it to have fun, to deal with stress and anxiety, or to fall asleep? Think about ways you could accomplish those objectives without alcohol, such as playing games instead of drinking at a party, meeting friends for a hike, taking a walk, or doing yoga.
• Let friends and family know about your plan to participate in Dry January. Consider asking them to join you and support each other throughout the month.
• Make sure alternative alcohol-free beverages are available at parties and gatherings.
• Have a polite, assertive “no, thanks” ready for when you are offered a drink.
• As the month progresses, pay attention to how you feel. Are you sleeping better? Do you have more energy? When you notice benefits, make note of them. It will help you keep your momentum going.
• Have a plan in place for when the month ends. As is the case with changing our eating habits, it’s easy to resume old patterns without a longterm plan.

Remember, if you feel better when you are not drinking, or when you decrease your drinking, then your body is telling you something. Listen to your body.
If you decide to return to drinking after January is over, stay within the Dietary Guidelines for Americans, 2020–2025, which provide advice on what to eat and drink to meet nutrient needs, promote health, and prevent disease. The guidelines recommend that adults, who choose to drink, limit alcohol intake to 1 drink or less for women and 2 drinks or less for men—on any single day, not on average. Keep in mind that drinking less is better for health. Research shows that even small amounts of alcohol can carry health risks, including for certain cancers and cardiovascular issues.
There are situations in which some people should avoid alcohol completely, particularly if they:
• Plan to drive or operate machinery, or participate in activities that require skill, coordination, and alertness
• Take certain over-the-counter or prescription medications
• Have certain medical conditions
• Are recovering from AUD or are unable to control the amount that they drink
• Are younger than age 21
• Are pregnant or may become pregnant

AI is likely to be either the best or the worst thing to happen to humanity.”
–

With the advent of ChatGPT, self-driving cars, facial recognition, and Snapchat filters, to name but a few examples, it seems that Artificial Intelligence (AI) is now everywhere. In fact, AI has become so central to our way of living, that AI was declared 2023’s “word of the year” by Collins Dictionary. Even though AI seems to be relatively new, the phrase was actually created in 1956 at a conference that is widely accepted to be the birthplace of AI – the Dartmouth Summer Research Project on Artificial Intelligence. With many possessing only a limited understanding of what AI can do for them in a general sense, the complexities of how AI operates are vast and the possibilities of what AI could achieve in the future seem endless. Continue reading to find out: what AI is; how AI works; the different types of AI; the benefits and applications of AI; the limitations of AI; ethical and safety concerns of AI; and what the future holds for AI.
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is actually a branch of computer science that aims to allow a computer or robot (controlled by a computer) to perform tasks that would normally require human intelligence (e.g. learning from experience, adapting to new situations, problem-solving, reasoning, comprehension, making judgments and much more). While it may sound like AI allows computers to ‘think’ independently like humans, this is not the case. Many people assume AI systems, like Alexa or Siri, can understand text or speech in the same way that humans
do; ultimately, AI is only a series of algorithms that can recognize patterns from information inputs. AI systems, unlike humans, also lack comprehension.
As a way to determine whether an AI model has reached the capability of mimicking human thought processes, they are often assessed against the ‘Turing Test’. As yet, there has been no AI model that has officially passed the Turing Test – ChatGPT creators claimed their model passed the Turing Test, though this has not yet been independently verified.
Because the notion of ‘intelligence’ itself is difficult to define with reference to AI, it can be broadly outlined in three ways: Artificial Narrow Intelligence, Artificial General Intelligence and Artificial Superintelligence.
Artificial Narrow Intelligence (ANI), sometimes called Weak AI, has limited application and succeeds at performing single tasks very well. Narrow AI operates within a narrow context and is an imitation of human intelligence applied to a specifically designed problem (e.g. changing voice to text).
Narrow AI models include: Siri and Alexa; Grammarly; social media filters; self-driving cars (so far, only manufactured by Tesla and Mercedes Benz); web searches; conversational

bots (customer service chats on websites); email filters; and streaming service recommendations, to name just a few. At present, ANI is the only type of AI in existence.
Artificial General Intelligence (AGI), or Strong AI, is a machine that is considered to be ‘on par’ with human intelligence, simulating behaviours with the ability to learn and apply its intelligence to solve any problem. AGI would behave in a way that is nearly identical to that of a human in any given situation; AGI would even possess the ability to have and understand emotions. However, this type of AI remains theoretical and doesn’t yet exist – rest assured though, there are many companies accelerating efforts towards achieving such advanced levels of AI.
Artificial Superintelligence (ASI) would far surpass its predecessors, with the ability to become cognisant and exceed the intelligence of humans. While such capabilities might seem like the plot to a futuristic, dystopian novel, ASI is presently hypothetical and not a level of advancement that we are likely to encounter in our lifetime.
The way AI systems function is incredibly complex with many different facets. In essence, these systems function by combining large data sets with well-programmed processing algorithms. These systems then execute numerous tasks at high speed. Bottom line? AI systems are allpowered by algorithms.
Most current AI systems ‘learn’ through Machine Learning; a type of learning that requires an input of data, which the system will then process with intuitive algorithms (algorithms designed to mimic human thought processes). After the data has been entered and processed, the AI can then recognise behaviour patterns and errors, adjusting its functions and algorithms as needed. For example, streaming services (Netflix, Prime, Spotify, etc.) use machine learning to generate recommendations for their users.
Other, more sophisticated, AI models use Deep Learning, which is a more complex form of Machine Learning that uses large neural networks (which mimic the neural pathways of the human brain) to learn multifaceted patterns and make predictions of outcomes without human
participation. For example, ChatGPT uses a deep neural network with billions of criteria to analyze and generate text. These AI systems allow for a more personalized user experience.
The algorithms, used to program and help AI systems ‘learn’, are all written by highly-skilled computer programmers (coders).
There are four forms of AI: Reactive Machine, Limited Memory, Theory of Mind and Self-Aware.
Reactive Machine
AI systems that have no memory, are unable to store data, and mimic the ability of the human mind to process
unexpected stimuli without prior knowledge (i.e. not programmed into the algorithm) are called Reactive Machines.
The most well-known example of a Reactive Machine is IBM’s Deep Blue. This machine is programmed to understand the rules of chess, including the recognition of all of the pieces on the chessboard and how each piece can move. Deep Blue calculates the most effective next move for itself, whilst predicting the opponent’s most likely course of action, through an analysis of the current situation on the board. However, since there is no memory, Deep Blue is unable to ‘learn’ from previous chess games. The decisions of this Reactive Machine are based only on the current situation and its available options.
Streaming service recommendations are a more

contemporary example of a Reactive Machine AI system. This type of AI processes huge amounts of customer data in order to recommend specific films and TV programs relevant to previous viewing history.
Limited Memory AI systems are the most commonly used type of AI in the world today. Unlike Reactive Machine AI systems, Limited Memory AI systems can refer to past experiences over time, much like the way a human brain’s neurons create pathways. These interpretations are then used to improve the algorithm by programming the AI system to allow its actions to be based on past and present data. While it might seem this is the same way a human might garner information from
successes and failures (memories), the AI system only temporarily stores past experiences. The information is then exploited by the AI system to ‘train’ itself and improve its capabilities over time, with the more data that it interprets.
One of the most impressive current examples of a Limited Memory AI system is self-driving cars. These cars operate based on data (from the algorithms they were programmed with), as well as interpreting information gathered by its sensors, adjusting to the environment as necessary. The information these cars interpret includes, but is not limited to, dynamic road conditions, other cars and static objects.
Theory of Mind AI systems are the next frontier for computer programmers. When these AI systems are capable of decision-making equal to that of a human, we will have achieved Theory of Mind; this type of AI system is anticipated for the near future. At the heart of the theoretical Theory of Mind AI system lies the proposed capacity to recognize and remember emotions, which will then enable adjustment to behaviors based on this information – similar to how humans react in social situations.
While Theory of Mind AI hasn’t yet been achieved, robots like Sophia (created by Hanson Robotics) have come quite close; Sophia is a humanoid robot able to “see” emotions and respond accordingly.
Going one step further than the Theory of Mind AI lies Self-Aware AI, which will be an AI system maintaining an awareness and understanding of its own existence. This type of AI system would possess human-level consciousness and intelligence, with the potential to exceed both.
Self-Aware AI is a long way off from becoming a reality, as research continues to understand how the human mind operates and how memory, learning and decisionmaking abilities function. Furthermore, the algorithms and hardware that currently exist would be unable to support such a sophisticated and complex AI system.
