Although Perfume is a book from the archives (1985) which was made into a film in 2006, I only discovered it recently. It won a Fantasy award when it was published yet I can't really call it Fantasy. And although set firmly in the past it's not Historical Fiction either. In spite of the explicit subtitle, it isn’t Horror, nor is it a Murder Mystery. It’s one of those wonderful books which defies a genre.
Jean-Baptiste Grenouille is the story of a peculiar boy who becomes a dangerous yet interesting man. He is born without any body odour. As his wet nurse states, “Babies always have a smell, some stink, but underneath it, there's always a warm, cuddly smell that even a cold, heartless, child-hating woman such as I can appreciate.” But Grenouille lacks any kind of scent, which marks him out as different. Paradoxically his own sense of smell is perfect, the olfactory equivalent of the perfect pitch possessed by some musicians. He becomes obsessed with scent, particularly the aromas of Paris, and his dark curiosity about perfume is central to the plot. Grenouille knows he is not normal, and his obsession for the pursuit of a perfect fragrance leads him to commit his first murder, for the love of a young woman’s particular scent.

September 13th is Roald Dahl Day. It’s celebrated every year on his birthday. Dahl was born in 1916, and was adventurous in his youth, working out in Tanzania then becoming a fighter pilot in WWll. In the 1950s he moved to Buckinghamshire and began to write children’s stories from a small hut at the bottom of his garden. He wrote more than twenty children’s classics, all penned by hand on the yellow paper of the American legal pads he favoured, and all illustrated by Sir Quentin Blake. They include Charlies and the Chocolate Factory, James and the Giant Peach, and DahlMatilda.has
been called the World’s number one storyteller. One of the reasons for his popularity was his playful use of language. Taking a lesson from Shakespeare himself, Dahl invented thousands of words such as swashboggling and frobscottle, which were compiled in an illustrated dictionary in 2016 to celebrate the centenary of his birth.

I often get asked when to do it; how to do it, and how extensive it should be?
There are two main pruning seasons: autumn and spring. Shrubs that flower in the winter, spring and early summer generally produce their flowers on old wood, which is any stem that grew the previous year. These shrubs need to be pruned in the autumn.
While a shrub won’t die if it isn’t pruned, it might grow too large for the space, or become straggly, or produce poor quality flowers. So, gardeners prune in order to enhance a plant’s performance; to encourage it to produce better foliage, flowers, or fruit. Pruning forces a plant into ‘growth mode’ as it tries to replace what it has lost.

Sunglasses have two main purposes, to dim visible light, and to protect us from UV. In the UK, all sunglasses have to block at least 99% of UV. Counterintuitively the darkness of the tint does NOT relate to how much UV is blocked. Tints fall into five categories

you know that autumn and spring are potentially as dangerous as summer for our sight? The sun is lower in the sky in the northern hemisphere so more likely to shine directly into our eyes.
Polarized sunglasses block the glare from water or wet roads. They are comfortable lenses to wear, and many people love the colour clarity associated with them. However, it is useful to note that they might impact how well you can see your satnav or ‘heads up’ display (a transparent display in some new cars which presents data at windscreen level).
The depth of a tint is personal preference but if sold as sunglasses they must still block 99% of UV. In the UK it is illegal to drive at night or twilight in all tints apart from a category 0 lens. In addition, it is illegal to drive in a category 4 tint, even during the day. Category 4 tints should be labelled clearly, with an appropriate warning. If you have a category 3 lens at the darker end AND a tinted windscreen be aware that this can tip you into category 4. At the time of writing the fine for driving in category 4 sunglasses at any time, or any sunglasses at night, is £2500.
