Because of the regulations surrounding sunglasses, price has little bearing on UV protection as long as you buy from a reputable outlet. More expensive might buy you designer style, better glare performance due to better quality lenses, and a better fit and finish but not extra UV protection.

Polarized sunglasses block the glare from water or wet roads. They are comfortable lenses to wear, and many people love the colour clarity associated with them. However, it is useful to note that they might impact how well you can see your satnav or ‘heads up’ display (a transparent display in some new cars which presents data at windscreen level).

Theemployers.cutting of the last sheaf was subject to considerable ceremony in most parts of the country. It was known as ‘the mare’ or ‘the neck’ or ‘nack’ and was treated with great reverence. The last sheaf was where the harvest spirit was said to retreat and take refuge. The act of cutting it was known as ‘crying the mare’ or ‘cutting the neck’ and it effectively meant slaying the harvest spirit, so it was taken very seriously.

Sunglasses have two main purposes, to dim visible light, and to protect us from UV. In the UK, all sunglasses have to block at least 99% of UV. Counterintuitively the darkness of the tint does NOT relate to how much UV is blocked. Tints fall into five categories

The best way to make sure that your sunglasses comply with all regulations is to look for the CE mark, or the UKCA (UK Conformity Assessed) mark, which replaces it from next year.

Light is part of the electromagnetic spectrum. The visible part of the spectrum is small but it’s the part that our eyes can detect. UV on the other hand is invisible to human eyes. It has a shorter wavelength and is higher energy and this is why it causes damage. It can cause cataracts, macular degeneration and skin cancers which affect the eyelids and surrounding tissues.

The word harvest comes from the Anglo-Saxon word for autumn, ‘haerfest.’ For our ancestors it represented the culmination of the year’s work, ensuring they would survive the harsh winter.

Much folklore is connected to the grain harvest because grain provided the staple diet of most people in the form of bread, porridge, oatcakes, and

In the majority of places cutting the last sheaf was seen as an honour but some people were fearful of being held responsible for making the Corn Spirit homeless. In these instances, to prevent being cursed with bad luck groups of reapers would take turns in throwing their sickles at the sheaf. In this way the blame was shared, and the bad luck diluted.

you know that autumn and spring are potentially as dangerous as summer for our sight? The sun is lower in the sky in the northern hemisphere so more likely to shine directly into our eyes.

The depth of a tint is personal preference but if sold as sunglasses they must still block 99% of UV. In the UK it is illegal to drive at night or twilight in all tints apart from a category 0 lens. In addition, it is illegal to drive in a category 4 tint, even during the day. Category 4 tints should be labelled clearly, with an appropriate warning. If you have a category 3 lens at the darker end AND a tinted windscreen be aware that this can tip you into category 4. At the time of writing the fine for driving in category 4 sunglasses at any time, or any sunglasses at night, is £2500.

He also loved to include more arcane words from his own childhood but less familiar to today’s children, such as blithering, and breeches. And he slipped biographical details into his stories, such as Matilda's parrot being called Chopper, which was the name of his own little dog, and Matilda’s own name which was a name used for the tanks in WWll in North Africa where Dahl served.

September 13th is Roald Dahl Day. It’s celebrated every year on his birthday. Dahl was born in 1916, and was adventurous in his youth, working out in Tanzania then becoming a fighter pilot in WWll. In the 1950s he moved to Buckinghamshire and began to write children’s stories from a small hut at the bottom of his garden. He wrote more than twenty children’s classics, all penned by hand on the yellow paper of the American legal pads he favoured, and all illustrated by Sir Quentin Blake. Taking a lesson from Shakespeare himself, Dahl invented thousands of words such as swashboggling and frobscottle, which were compiled in an illustrated dictionary in 2016 to celebrate the centenary of his birth.

Pam Donnelly, Chief Executive of Colchester Borough Council, added: “Despite being a high-performing and ambitious organisation, as the council recovers from the pandemic, we need to reset and realign to support residents even more effectively. While a shrub won’t die if it isn’t pruned, it might grow too large for the space, or become straggly, or produce poor quality flowers. So, gardeners prune in order to enhance a plant’s performance; to encourage it to produce better foliage, flowers, or fruit. Pruning forces a plant into ‘growth mode’ as it tries to replace what it has lost.

There’s no magic or mystery involved: we’re working with the natural inclination of the plant. If the foliage and flowers are produced on new wood, then it makes sense to encourage the plant to produce as much of this as possible. It also makes sense to prune in the spring because any new growth in the autumn would be vulnerable to frost.

There are two main pruning seasons: autumn and spring. Shrubs that flower in the winter, spring and early summer generally produce their flowers on old wood, which is any stem that grew the previous year. These shrubs need to be pruned in the autumn.

Many autumn-pruned plants benefit from ‘the rule of three.’ My grandfather taught me this and it and means that each year, in the autumn, after the shrub has flowered, you prune out one third of the oldest shoots. This encourages new growth the following spring while still allowing the shrub to flower on the old wood. Treated this way, the shrub will be completely rejuvenated every three years but will flower every year.

6. Avoid praise that compares a child to others. 5. Praise things the child can control, rather than ability. If your child is naturally gifted at the piano for example, instead of saying, ‘Oh wow you’re so talented,’ when she plays, say something like, ‘Wow, that piece is sounding good now, I can hear the difference from when you first started to learn it. Your hard work is paying off.’ The child can control how hard she works at her practice; not how naturally able she is at playing the piano.

Recent studies on the brain indicate that we respond to social approval positively and that praise is important for a child’s development. But not all praise is created equal. Some types of praise are helpful while others have a negative effect. So how do we know what sort of praise to use?

4. Don’t praise achievements that come too easily. Either the child assumes

2. Don’t use insincere praise. By the time a child is old enough to analyse belief or motive (generally around 5 years of age) they know when praise is deserved. If they feel it’s being given falsely they might think you feel sorry for them. They might also think, ‘I can’t trust you.’

It sets the child up to worry about future performance…’Oh heck, now I need to get 100% in every single exam forever… If I don’t, they’ll be disappointed.’ These kids might back off from new challenges because they aren’t certain they’ll be the best. They don’t want to risk failure and loss of approval.

Alittle praise now and then makes us feel appreciated, boosts our feel-good hormones, and increases our motivation. Praising children can inspire them to be more persistent and co-operative.

‘Spare the rod and spoil the child’ is a phrase I heard often growing up. My father’s concern that if he praised me too much I would become full of myself, or overconfident meant that praise was in short supply in our house. It led to feelings of inadequacy and a tendency to seek approval and people-please.

A uniform sets a student’s expectation that they are in a ‘working

13 Angela – mum of two, aged 10 & 13 I like school uniform. I think a uniform is central to building a sense of community among students in school and in the local community. Students out in the community wearing uniform are easily identified so they are more likely to behave, and teachers won’t have to deal with problems like those that present on non-uniform days.

Why not let children make an independent decision about what they wear? Not everyone feels comfortable at the same temperature for example. My husband often wears a short-sleeved T-shirt while I am sporting a sweater! Why should we expect children to all be the same?

My twins’ head cited his strict uniform code as a means of promoting better behaviour, and a cohesive sense of community. But as far as I am concerned a sense of belonging is about setting expectations around treating each other with respect and kindness. That comes from the school ethos led by the teachers, not the Andclothesthen there’s the cost. Last year I had three children all requiring new uniforms. That’s a huge outlay. How much easier for hard pressed families would it be in the current economic climate if a school said, ‘Wear your own clothes.’ I’m sure you’d be able to hear the collective sigh of relief across the country.

Uniformity -Are you for school uniform or against it? Two mums give their views.

Fill in the grid so that each row, column and 3x3 box, contains the numbers 1 through to 9 with no repetition.

I don’t get why schools are so hung up on Whenuniform.thehead mistress of my son’s primary school and the headmaster of my twins’ senior school changed a year ago, they both ‘rebranded.’ The primary uniform changed from a sensible polo shirt and comfy sweatshirt to shirt, tie and knitted jumper for all children older than reception. I look at the kids arriving at my son’s primary dressed in what amounts to corporate wear and I wonder why we place so little value on childhood. Kids should be free to move and run about, not be constrained by collars and scratchy Theknitwear.policy towards uniform seems have become ridiculously strict in recent years, in many instances dictating hair style and colour as well as dress. It’s a frequent source of conflict between the school, the student, and the parent. You only have to look at the headlines in national newspapers which often feature outraged parents whose children have been sent home because their skirt is too short, their trousers are the wrong style, or their hair is dyed. Who cares?

I think that well-made durable uniform costs significantly less than designer brands and will often last a child beyond one school year. It can also be handed down to younger siblings. I vote we keep school uniform and I think that most parents would agree with me.

The practice will soon be opening flu vaccination clinics for bookings from mid-September and October. These appointments will be available to book online as well as by calling or visiting the practice.

This year the eligibility for the flu vaccine is as follows: 2–3-year-olds, anyone with a chronic disease, anyone aged 65 and over. We will not be offering flu vaccinations for 50–64-year-olds with no clinical conditions this year.

The surgery offers shingles and pneumonia vaccinations to our eligible patients. The vaccination against shingles is available to any patient aged between 70 and 79 who has not previously had one and the pneumonia vaccine can be given to anyone over the age of 65 and those patients who are immunosuppressed. Generally, only a single vaccination is required for this as well, although sometimes a second is advised. Please contact reception to check your eligibility for either of these vaccinations or to book an appointment.
