AMERICAN HAMPSHIRE SHEEP ASSOCIATION

EXECUTIVE SECRETARY | JEFF EBERT

EDITOR | MORGAN HAUGER

Secretary’s Message

We are excited to announce the transition of the American Hampshire Sheep Association Executive Secretary and Associated Registry office to a new team.

Jeff Ebert has done a wonderful job for the AHSA and Associated Registry office for the past 10 years. Jeff has decided it's time to change pastures and to slow the pace of his busy life. This will allow him to enjoy his sheep farm and family a little more. He will continue until January 31, 2025 to help with the transition.

The new team has over 80 years of combined experience in the registered livestock industry. The role of AHSA Executive Secretary will be assumed by Tor Sorensen. The Manager of the Associated Registry office will be Sue Traglia. We are working with the current Registry office to learn the many tasks of the organization. The projected timeline on the movement and transition of the office will be quick. We will be moving the current Registry office from Wamego , KS to Sedalia, Missouri after Thanksgiving and plan to open Monday, December 9, 2024. Mail will begin to be forwarded to the new Sedalia office from Wamego on November 20. The Associated Registry web page associatedregistry.com will be updated with current application forms and updated addresses at that point.

Please feel free to reach out for questions about the Associated Registry transition.

Message from the President

Fall is here with all Its beautiful changes. Happy Fall to the American Hampshire Sheep Association members.

This issue of the Hampshire Heartbeat embodies all the change fall brings – a fresh look and layout with our breeders showcasing their programs and efforts. We are excited to partner with Morgan Hauger of Simplicity Creative to produce our magazine for the next year. Her creativity, production experience and passion for Hampshires make this a perfect partnership. Enjoy this edition and reflect on the hard work our members pour into their program and this great breed.

This year has been challenging, there’s really no better way to explain it. Yet, I am proud of the changes that our Board of Directors have made to benefit the association and our members. Our District 6 Director, Adam Everhart, and tireless junior volunteer, Mollie Taylor, devoted countless hours to our Junior Board to launch the first annual Hampshire Showdown in Indiana in July. An event that was just a vision at the beginning of the year gained momentum in the spring with all hands-on deck for brainstorming, researching, communicating, and decision-making. I commend the juniors for joining conference calls, making outreach calls to vendors, and putting on a first-class event. Thank you to Alan and Heidi Thorson for your support of the event, we were lucky to have you on board from the beginning to coordinate awards, vendors, and show gear. Thank you to our breeder and industry sponsors, we really could not have rewarded the kids without your support. The Hampshire Showdown was a unique event that combined educational components, two days of showing in conjunction with the Youth Sheep Expo, amazing prizes, and an even more impressive group of kids and sheep. Congratulations team – you set the bar high for the second annual event. With the announcement of Jeff Ebert’s retirement, the board spent much of the year drafting job descriptions and agreements, interviewing candidates, discussing options, and selecting our new leaders. We are excited to partner with Tor Sorensen as the AHSA Executive Secretary and Sue Tragila as the Associated Registry Office Manager to lead the organization and business into the future. While we are in the beginning stages of the training and transition, we are excited about the path we are on. Please stay tuned for more information about the new office, the transition plan, and what to expect in 2025.

As Louisville is fast approaching, we look forward to seeing our members and exhibitors at the National Hampshire Show. Our Annual Meeting will be on Saturday, November 16 th at 6 PM at the convention center. We welcome all members, juniors and seniors, to join us for a light dinner and presentations about our Junior Program, Scholarship winners, Futurity Winners, Director elections, and our new team. Please plan to join us for a fun-filled evening!

We have a great team of directors who represent all sectors of Hampshire sheep and want to make a difference for the association and you. Please reach out to any of us with your ideas and feedback, our contact information is available at https://hampshires.org/contacts.html

Best regards, Dina King

Boyd Dohrmann, age 80, of Ames, Iowa passed away July 20th, 2024. Boyd was born June 11th, 1944, in Hampton, Iowa to Ben and Fern (Hemm) Dohrmann. He graduated from Franklin Consolidated School in 1962. He attended Iowa State University, majoring in Animal Science, and was a member of Alpha Gamma Rho fraternity. While in college, he served in the National Guard for 6 years.

At Iowa State, Boyd met his future wife, Irene Williams. After graduation, Boyd and Irene went back to the family farm in Hampton, where he raised crops, sheep, cattle and hogs, and sold Cornelius Seed. While farming, the Dohrmann family received the Century Farm Award in 1988. After 45 years, he retired from farming and moved to Ames.

While growing up Boyd was deeply involved in 4-H and livestock judging from a young age. His passion continued at Iowa State, where he was a member of the Iowa State Livestock Judging Team. He co-founded The Dohrmann Brothers Sheep business with his brother Bill and showed Hampshire sheep at the Iowa State Fair for 50 consecutive years, as well as at various state fairs across the Midwest. Besides watching his children show sheep, the highlight was raising the 1999 National Grand Champion Hampshire Ram. He enjoyed judging sheep at numerous state, regional and county fairs. He served on the Iowa Sheep Board and Iowa Sheep Improvement Association. He was inducted into the Iowa 4-H Hall of Fame for his several years of service as a 4-H leader and the Franklin County youth sheep program.

Boyd was a member of the Ames UCC Church and a proud supporter of Iowa State University. He was an avid sports fan, holding season tickets for football for 48 years and men's basketball for 40 years. He enjoyed traveling with his wife and family, visiting all 50 states, and he loved reading in his spare time.

Boyd is preceded in death by his parents, Ben and Fern Dohrmann and his granddaughter

Makayla Roberts. He is survived by his wife Irene of 54 years; brother Bill; children Jill (Brian) Roberts, Ben (Jen) Dohrmann, and Sarah (Adam) Britton; grandchildren Cael Roberts, Makenna, Bennett and Kennedy Dohrmann, and Will and Everett Britton; nieces and nephews.

Visitation was held at Grandon Funeral Home in Ames on Thursday, July 25, from 5:00-7:00 p.m. (414 Lincoln Way, Ames, Iowa 50010). A graveside service was at the Hampton Cemetery on Friday, July 26 10:30 a.m. Everyone is welcome to attend a celebration of life lunch at 11:30 at the Coulter Community Center.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Iowa 4-H Foundation or the library of your choice.
