Superior feeds, naturally
Simple System offers natural feeds of the highest quality, supplying everything your horse needs to succeed.
Established in 1996, the origins of Simple System lie in a passion for horses and a desire to provide them with the best possible diet for health and performance. The principle is simple, we supply you with the food nature intended your horse to eat.
Simple System feeds are formulated without cereals, pulses such as soya and peas, molasses, additives and preservatives. Instead, we utilise ingredients found in the horse’s natural environment, which they have so perfectly evolved to digest. In return they are better nourished, more settled in their work and at less risk of developing many common health problems.
We pride ourselves not only on the quality of our feed products, but also on providing expert advice directly to our customers for the benefit of your horses. We are available to provide honest and responsible equine management suggestions, nutritional guidance and tailored feeding plans over the phone or online.

Why choose a forage diet?
Better for your horse
Historically, your horse’s natural diet was simple. Equines have evolved over 30 million years eating the grass, herbs and shrubs available to them in their natural environment. Starchy foods such as cereals, pulses and soya were not available and so not part of the diet. They cannot be efficiently utilised by horses who produce so little of the enzyme amylase required to digest them.
A good quality forage diet will ensure your horse has enough energy stored in the muscles to sustain them during their work, but not become overexcited and unmanageable.
Simpler for you
Forage feeds are fermented in the hind gut, just like grass and hay, which means you do not need to withhold food around work. The ability to feed immediately before and after exercising your horse, can really help you make the most of your time at the yard, especially in the winter months when daylight hours are limited.
A high quality forage based diet does not require any additional supplementation, such as artificial vitamins and minerals, because the feed itself naturally supplies the horse’s needs.

Meet our key ingredients
Our forage crops are grown specifically for our horse feeds, meeting strict nutritional profiles for each product. With natural forage feeds the hard work is done in the field, monitoring growth and selecting the optimum time to harvest to achieve the ideal analysis.

Lucerne Grass
(Called alfalfa in America)
A deep rooting legume, lucerne offers a wealth of natural vitamins and minerals. Highly digestible fibre and good levels of quality protein support muscle growth and development, improving condition and stamina. Naturally low sugar levels make it a suitable feed for most equines.
A naturally palatable source of high quality fibre, protein and minerals. We offer grass products in a full spectrum of nutritional profiles ensuring we can provide the benefits of good grazing to all horses, year round. Generally, the higher carbohydrate levels and useful iron levels make grass feeds ideal for horses in harder work.

Sainfoin Linseed
An ancient forage legume containing many unique properties, sainfoin is a premium alternative to grass and lucerne. A highly nutritious feed, rich in minerals and trace elements, and a source of condensed tannins which can aid the digestion of protein. An ideal feed for those with increased nutritional demand. Sainfoin nectar is also a firm favourite with bees.
Cooked, full fat, linseed delivers high levels of digestible energy with low levels of sugar and starch. It also provides essential omega 3 to ensure healthy skin, a shiny coat and promotes strong hooves. Unlike other oil-bearing seeds, linseed offers the same optimal balance of omega 3:6, 4:1, as natural grazing.
What makes Simple System special?
Species Appropriate
Our feeding system was created to make it simple for you to offer your horse the diet it needs to thrive. Formulating feeds that cater to the horse’s unique digestive system is at the very heart of our philosophy. We demonstrate our commitment to the horse’s natural, plant based, diet by registering our entire range of feeds with the Vegan Society. We offer a broad spectrum of forage feeds, covering a variety of plant sources, product formats and energy levels. With this we can provide a suitable diet to support all horses, from happy hackers to high level competition and endurance horses.

Top Tips from our Feed Line
@simplesystemhorsefeeds
We strongly suggest all pelleted feeds are soaked to minimise the risk of choke. There are many other benefits to soaking, including: Soaking Feeds
Replace hydration
Fresh grass, for example, is 70-80% water, once dried and pelleted this is reduced to around 10%. Replacing the natural hydration avoids your horse being made thirsty.
Dilute stomach acid
A hydrated feed will dilute the stomach acid helping to protect against gastric issues.
Increase feed volume
An increase in feed volume reduces the rate of intake and extends eating time. More chewing generates more saliva, helping to neutralise stomach acid.
Target Feeding
Forage feeds are fermented in the hind gut, just like grass and hay, which means you do not need to withhold food around work.
Offering a forage feed directly before work will line and protect the stomach, provide a steady release of targeted energy to fuel the work required and keep your horse focused and comfortable.
Forage feeds can also be offered directly after work, even if your horse is hot. Providing a soaked feed will offer hydration as well as nourishment, ideal if you struggle to get your horse to drink away from home.

How to get started As simple as 1. 2. 3!
Product
Selection
In general, we use a 1,2,3 system to give the best result for your horse, suggesting a pellet, a chop and a balancer to build your Simple System diet. For elderly or dentally challenged horses, omit the chop in favour of easy to eat soaked pellets.
This diet will not require any further supplementation, other than a pure white salt lick. We offer a handy salt lick in a flexitub or Summer Salt which can be added to food or water in times of greater need.

Our knowledgeable advisors are available to offer personalised suggestions and complete tailored feed plans, over the phone or via email. You can get in touch on 01728 604008, info@simplesystem.co.uk or via our social media pages.

How much do I need to feed?
Each product comes with a straightforward feeding guide on the back of the pack. You will also find this on the relevant product page on our website. This is a good starting point; however, every horse is different.
Our Feed Line advisors will be happy to suggest feeding rates based on your horse’s individual needs. With any new feed you should keep an eye on your horse’s condition, ideally with the aid of a weigh tape or condition scoring chart, and adjust the quantities accordingly. You can add a Weigh Tape to your order online at www.simplesystem.co.uk.

Sainfoin, a history...
An ancient legume, native to South Central Asia, introduced into Europe in the 15th century. The name Sainfoin comes from the French saint foin or sainfoin meaning ‘holy hay’ or ‘healthy hay’. It was known that animals fed on sainfoin were healthier and put on weight more rapidly than on other forage. Sainfoin was grown as a hay crop to provide high quality, forage fuel for heavy working horses.
Sainfoin is an environmentally beneficial crop converting nitrogen from the atmosphere into nutrients, reducing the need for fertilisers.

Why cold pressed linseed oil...
Linseed oil offers the same optimal balance of omega 3:6, 4:1, as natural grazing. Other sources of oil, such as rapeseed or soya, have an omega balance tipped in favour of pro-inflammatory omega 6 which inhibits the positive effects of essential omega 3.
Cold pressing retains the beneficial antioxidants that would otherwise be damaged by exposure to heat. Our linseed oil is pressed to order, ensuring it reaches you in optimum condition without the use of preservatives.

Paddock Management
Horses eat more hay and grass than any other feed, yet we rarely consider its nutritional value. Thoughtful management and supporting your pasture will reward you with the best quality grazing for your horse.
Natural Paddock Recovery
Our paddock treatment utilises two natural ingredients to restore vital minerals, regulate soil pH and promote healthier grass growth. Calcium carbonate raises your soil pH and aids surface drainage by flocculating clay particles. Polyhalite replenishes minerals depleted by regular grazing and poo picking; it supplies readily available, slow release sulphur, potassium, magnesium and calcium.
Natural Paddock Recovery is most effective when applied in the spring or autumn, but can be used at any time of year. It can be hand broadcast or spread with a standard fertiliser spinner. Annual application is suitable for most paddocks, at a rate of 120kg (6 bags) per acre. Apply twice a year if grazing is particularly acidic or stressed.

Regulates soil pH
Restores vital minerals
Promotes healthy grass growth
Natural Grazing Mix
A ryegrass-free seed blend of many high fibre grass species perfect for equine pasture. A balance of hardy, creeping & drought resistant grasses, utilising traditional species, which are safer for equines than the highly “improved” species commonly used in modern agriculture. In addition, we have added legumes for their mineral rich content and soil improvement characteristics. This mix is also suitable for hay cropping.
One bag of Natural Grazing Mix will seed 1 acre of bare land, or 3-5 acres if you are reseeding patches. Please see our website for details of the current seed blend.

Forage Analysis
Hay will often be one of the biggest parts of the horse’s diet and can vary considerably in feed value. As such, it makes sense to find out exactly what it is contributing to your horse’s overall nutritional intake.
We offer two analysis packages for hay and haylage. Alongside the laboratory analysis we will also advise on your results, taking your horse’s individual requirements into account, to give you the information you need to adapt your additional feeding to suit.
