Letter from the Editor I write this with a cheer and a tear. Happy to announce I am starting on a new adventure in my life, and yet sad that I will no longer be able to combine my ‘day job’ with working for this wonderful paper. After nearly a year with The Underground I have decided to step back and concentrate on my editing and translation business.

I have been involved with The Underground since day one. It’s been an incredible journey that I wouldn’t have missed for the world. I will look back on the past year with nostalgia and pride. It’s been a blast. Working with so many talented and dedicated people was a privilege. There’s one person in particular I would like to thank - the incredibly creative and amazing visionary, Simone Branson. She possesses a knack for collecting the right people around her, which in the case of The Underground, enabled her to create a platform where (multi)cultural The Hague meets international The Hague.

A year ago we met, two complete strangers and today I am proud to call her a friend. She has been an incredible support to me whilst setting up my own business RITES.eu and I’ve learnt from her that it takes pure passion and 100% dedication to make any business a success.

You’re not completely rid of me yet though. I will continue writing my column. The Underground will always remain close to my heart.

Leafy Laan or Cyclist Safety?

Ruud Janssen has a design office for visual communication (that specialises in sign language), Vi-taal, located at the Stationsweg. Some time ago at Open Coffee The Hague (‘Opuh Koffie’), he stated: ‘You can safely say that the deaf have difficulty with reading and writing. If you were unable to learn to speak a language, it is damn hard to learn how to read and write it, especially, learning to read comprehensively. Therefore, the BBC uses interpreters for many of its programs. Reading subtitles, in general, is extra difficult, because the text will be reduced or omitted due to the limited space for the text.’

Janssen claims: ‘Deaf people rarely attend museums nor have many ever been inside a museum. In a museum, although you need to use your eyes, much of the content information is written in text.’

Janssen felt the need to get more deaf people into the museums. Together with Tony Bloem, who has a hearing disability himself and is one of Holland’s best speakers of sign language, decided to start a project. They created a series of videos about art from The Hague meant for people with hearing disabilities. ten videos were recorded at ten different locations in The Hague, Gemeentemuseum, Escher Museum, Panorama Mesdag, Mauritshuis, Beelden aan Zee and more. In these videos Tony signs stories in front of famous paintings, Vermeer’s ‘Meisje met de Parel’ for example. Even for the hearing among us, Tony Bloem is an intriguing person to watch because he is such a great ‘actor’. Later on, the voice of actor Marc Krone was added to these videos, in order to reach a larger audience.

However, something strange happened. In each video there were several moments where Bloem and Krone stopped talking, in those moments the artwork is shown for a few seconds. Bloem was okay with it, he didn’t miss anything at all. But Janssen and video-editor André Bijma felt this was not okay. A video with long moments of total silence is not a good idea. Many feel that you need sound in a video, every time. If not, you will feel the alienating silence even more.

In response, they decided to hire me for the music. I composed a leadertune to set a nice mood, and I composed special dedicated music to break the silence, and to add a little something to those well known paintings.

Not many composers have composed music for Vermeer, Mondriaan, Jan Steen and other artists like that, right? Well, I did.

The project is called Haagse Kunstgrepen and last month we had the premiere at the Haags Gemeentemuseum.

As you may know, the art world is having a difficult time, but fortunately the museums felt this project is important to many people, so they all agreed to sponsor the project. The odd thing is that organisations concerning people with hearing disabilities did not seem interested in contributing to this project. But the deaf who came to the premiere seem to like the whole production. Unfortunately, they couldn’t hear any of the music I composed. But of course you can. Emily McCullough looks into the debate surrounding the development of the Laan van Meerdervoort.

The most striking feature of The Hague is, according to my parents, the many broad roads lined with huge trees and grassy islands between the traffic lanes. The abundance of such lavish greenery and wide avenues sets the city apart from watery Amsterdam and urban Rotterdam.

Imagine their disappointment when I told them recently that The Hague city council is proposing to remove a large number of trees from the Laan van Meerdervoort in the Segbroek area of the city. This proposal has been met with opposition from those who live in the area, and want the trees on the ‘longest avenue in the Netherlands’ to remain.

The city council wants to improve safety for cyclists, whilst also increasing parking spaces in an area where there is an estimated deficit of 500 spaces. New cycle paths will be created, separated from the busy traffic, and an extra 265 parking spaces will be available. The council decided that 243 trees should be cut down to enable these plans, 33 of these trees re-planted elsewhere and 164 new trees planted. On the Laan poplars and elms dominate, while the plans also include removing trees such as cherry and hazel within the residential areas of the Bloemenbuurt and Vruchtenbuurt.

The proposal to remove the trees follows from a previous risk analysis (2007) of poplar trees in The Hague, which concluded: · · ·

64% of the city’s poplars are in mature adult phase; 60% of the mature poplar trees have a life expectancy of less than 15 years; therefore, dying mature poplars will be inevitably cut down in the coming years.

The analysis also concluded that mature poplar trees are unsuitable for urban environments as they have a high risk of branch breakage during storms, which can cause injury and damage when they fall on people, cars, tram lines etc.

Some residents living in the area of the Laan van Meerdervoort have voiced their concerns over the proposal, creating the action group ‘Laat de Laan de Laan’ (Let the Laan Remain the Laan) to create awareness of their dissatisfaction with the council’s plans. Their fears are numerous: removal of the trees will reduce the attractiveness of the area; devalue house prices; reduce cyclist safety; increase congestion due to the narrower roadway and that the Laan will become a crowded, paid, carpark.

During a consultation evening in February, the local residents were invited to give their opinions and present alternative solutions. Still concerned with the intentions of the development, on 1 June the action group organised its own protest: a musical event on the Chrysantplein with drummers, local bands and singers interspersed with speakers about the debate.

It remains to be seen whether the group has been successful in their campaign, which will otherwise totally change the appearance of this neighbourhood for the coming years. The council has addressed the issues brought up in the consultation and in the coming months the exact planning of the development will be realised.

The city council intends for the development work to begin at the end of the year, with completion in 2013.

Cultural breeding ground De DCR •

When the ‘Cultural breeding ground De DCR’ was set up in 2004, the combination of creative and cultural activities was met with scepticism as the idea ruled that cultural hotspots are supposed to start from a grass-roots basis. But by now, friends and enemies agree that the DCR works, and that the diversity of designers, artists, small creative companies and cultural institutions has turned out more than okay.

In 2007 Nest, The Hague’s prominent exhibition space for contemporary arts, was born among the midst.

Each summer, Nest pays tribute to the cultural diversity that surrounds the exhibition space with a cultural salon capturing everything the DCR has to offer.

Expect presentations from Nieuwe Rembrandt contestant Puck Verkade, next to the Ouborg Prize winner André Kruysen and Venice Biennial hero Navid Nuur. Don’t be surprised to find high tech iPad apps and snazzy advertisement visuals next to extravagant paintings and bold sculptures. From paint strokes to dance moves, and from light beams to sound waves, it’s all available.

For those who like to concentrate fully on the work itself, the show runs until 5 August and is open Thursday till Sunday 13.00-17.00. Also, don’t forget to keep an eye out for the special tour day when five artists from the DCR welcome you for a personal presentation of their work.

Not a sheepish reaction from my kids on hearing that my first challenge for The underground was to actually shear a sheep.

The gist of it being that it was just not fair on the sheep. I thought they might be right.

ADO NEWS DEN HAAG

The last Friday in June saw the much awaited first day of training for the ADO first team, an event that attracted several thousand fans to the old Zuiderpark stadium. This is a tradition that has taken place for many years, yet this was possibly the final one due to the regeneration of the Zuiderpark area: a fact that added to the fantastic atmosphere which included flares and fireworks.

The new players were welcomed into the ADO family; hopefully these players will soon become heroes to their supporters. A major name was missing, Lex Immers who starred in the amazing season of 20102011, had moved on to join Feyenoord of Rotterdam.

At the time of going to press; no new ADO Den Haag fixtures are available, although several preseason friendlies have been announced. Watch the website for more details.

The ADO ladies have done it again, this time beating the ladies of VVV Venlo in the cup final 5-2.

The game was played in sweltering heat in front of a crowd of 2,000 fans. The win means ADO ladies have become double winners, and after so many years of finishing second, they are truly the best ladies team in Holland.

As in men’s football, success means players will be wanted by other clubs and already some big ADO names have moved on: Mandy van den Bergh being the star player of both ADO and Holland is moving to try her hand in the competitive leagues of Swedish ladies football.

ADO ladies could possibly win the treble when they take on Belgian side Standard Liege in Brussels for the ‘Super Cup’ on 14 August. Next season, ADO ladies will be taking part in the Champions League as well as a new Dutch-Belgian ladies football league; exciting times ahead for the ladies of ADO Den Haag.

I underestimated myself; it was intense and bloody hard work. Firstly you have to land the sheep on its bum. That way they just can’t move and you can have your way with them. Fred the farmer wrestled her down and then I copied him by clamping my black (very fitting) sheep between my thighs.

Pounced on the heavy vibrating shears and slid them down her stomach. Took a while to get the hang of it and a slight nick for poor sheepy but Fred got confident enough to let me get on with it and started taking pictures. The wool felt oily and getting the shears through some of the muck imbedded in her wool was hard going but wonderful to see her spring up, shake herself off and wink at me. No jumping up for me, my legs had turned to jelly and my arms felt like lead but it was worth it. Even with the two days of aches and pains afterwards. She seemed happy so I think it’s socks all round.

It felt fantastic being spurred on by family, friends and Underground supporters.

Get Regal!

Reina van Nieuwkerk-Rácz visits a chic seaside resort A recent survey by the Dutch Tourist Board revealed that more and more people are spending their hard earned holiday money locally. Not me. I need an annual sunshine guaranteed getaway to get me through the rest of the year.

But it got me thinking. Where in Holland is the best place to spend your precious days off? ‘Domburg,’ my Dutch tennis pals call out – unanimously!

I had to go and see for myself. It’s a lovely drive down to Zeeland and I can recommend the N57 crossing various impressive dykes and dams. For anyone interested in how the sea is kept in check, a trip to Zeeland will do the trick.

I had booked a room at the local Badhotel which despite its unfortunate name, I can highly recommend, if for no other reason than its close proximity to the beach.

At first glance I couldn’t really see the attraction. A beach is a beach, but walking back to the small town centre I had to admit that the quaint and very attractive Victorian houses built in the previous centuries by nobility and the well-to-do, are true gems. There’s an old-fashioned sense of élan about the place, and refreshingly, the beach is not flanked by high rise monstrosities, instead, tranquil dunes separate the beach from the elegant villas.

What was it that brought the Haagse upper class in droves to this remote coastal village more than a century ago? Two factors; the first was the determination of local authorities to make Domburg en vogue as a seaside resort. That the minor local aristocracy invited their finer European cousins to enjoy the healthy sea air helped enormously. Its true breakthrough was the opening of a health resort offering a bathing cure and other facilities by the German doctor, Johan Georg Mezger. He was internationally renowned for his scientific approach to physiotherapy and his Swedish massages and adored by his noble patients.

Like so many seaside resorts at the end of the 19th century, a flock of European royalty landed at Domburg for the few years that the resort was considered fashionable and then they moved on.

But they left their legacy in the form of pretty homes and buildings. Many of them today are quality seasonal lets with a price tag to match. But then you are entre nous.

On Air

Foreign correspondent and local radio programme producer LilyAnne Stroobach reviews news that puts The Hague in the world (and local ) spotlight just recently Dutch football fever, herring, jenever and viewing the troubled world through a lens.

Orange Squash ‘All dressed up with nowhere to go’ was the feeling that descended on The Hague last month when the Dutch football team failed to live up to expectations due to their miserable performance in the UEFA championships. Decked out in a riot of orange flags and with ‘Hup Holland Hup’ banners strung up everywhere, the city slowly lost its tangerine glow as the hope of making it to the final faded match by match.

In Scheveningen, where the football fever centred around the Kurhaus Hotel and the newly opened boulevard, the disappointment hung heavily in the air.

The huge screens put up for this occasion reflected a sombre picture as the Dutch team lost match after match and the ‘after parties’ planned by the hopeful owners of beach cafés didn’t quite come off the ground.

At DutchbuzZ, our hopes were high too as the picture above, taken on the eve of the championships, reflects. Much air time was spent letting listeners of the programme know about the match fixtures and the anticipated celebrations and events surrounding the orange hype. We even got our fashion expert, Lucy Bosscher, to say nice things about wearing orange, even though it’s probably her least favourite colour.

into this bottle and vat lined store that probably hasn’t changed much from the way it looked 170 years ago when it first opened its doors to the public.

‘Fish must swim,’ said the owner, Louis Centazzo, as we proceeded to follow each bite of new herring with a sip of korenwijn that I can only describe as a jenever with a hint of whisky. I have to confess that I’m not really a herring lover, but the combination of the oily, silky fish and the cleansing spirit of the korenwijn lingered in a very pleasant way. Louis and his assistant, Fleur, made me feel truly at home and I left the premises laden with bottles and well informed about the age old tradition of Jenever distilling, its history and, of course, its taste.

People focus One of the best things about reporting for DutchbuzZ is that it brings me into daily contact with a host of interesting people who make the international community of The Hague so worth living in.

One of these is Henry Arvidsson, a Swedish photographer whose focus is people. Just five minutes into my interview with him, I realised that we were in the same business; he capturing interesting people with his lenses and camera and I doing the same with my microphone and recorder.

Fish must swim Vlaggetjesdag, the traditional start of the ‘nieuwe haring’ or new herring season was a cold and blustery day on which only half of the expected 200 000 locals and visiting herring lovers came to the harbours of Scheveningen to sample this year’s catch. I wisely chose an indoor venue on this occasion.

Henry’s former work for the UN and OPCW has taken him around the world and, in particular, to the troubled areas of Iraq, Libya, Russia, China, Albania, India and South Korea. In his free time, he would go out into the streets to observe and photograph local people going about their everyday business. His time in Iraq is reflected in a photographic book that captures the anguish and hopes of this traumatised nation. For Henry, each face tells a story. Finding and holding that image is his passion and what he hopes to continue to do.

Having just discovered the Van Kleef Jenever Museum and having been told that ‘nieuwe haring’ should be tasted with a glass of ‘korenwijn’, I decided to sample these two Dutch delicacies on the premises of what was formerly a distillery near the city centre. And what a treat it turned out to be!

The 7th edition of the Feel at Home in The Hague - The International Community Fair is already well into the planning with the event taking place this year on Sunday 16 September, 11.00 to 17.00 at The Hague’s City Hall Atrium.

The event is the one and only fair targeting expats and internationals in The Hague.

As in previous editions, fairgoers will walk away with all the information on working, living, learning, socialising and leisure time in The Hague. However, this year the fair promises to be more interactive than ever before. Visitors can network and mingle, eat, have a drink and attend an interactive workshop, talk or show. From newcomers to longstanding international residents of the region; a fun, entertaining and informative Sunday is planned at The Hague’s city hall.

With over 60,000 expats in the region, The Hague is home to a large international community. Many internationals arrive in The Hague over the summer and face the challenging task of setting up a home, adapting to a new lifestyle, establishing social networks and finding their ‘niche’.

This is precisely the reason that, seven years ago, Billy Allwood, director and founder of TheHagueOnLine.com, decided that an event to present an overview of what’s available to internationals in The Hague was needed.

Billy was inspired by the ‘Orientation Week’ or ‘Freshers’ Fair’ events from his university days. Those events that were held to orient and welcome new students could, in this context, be used to orient and welcome new residents to The Hague. The Feel at Home in the Hague fair has been a continuing success year after year, both for those new to The Hague and those internationals that

have lived in the region for many years. The 2011 event saw nearly 200 standholders participating and 2,500 visitors.

This year’s event will include a series of fun workshops for adults to challenge both body and mind plus an entertaining workshop for kids. Professional entertainment will include an exciting cabaret act amongst other performers popular with The Hague’s international population. Young professionals are invited to join a networking brunch and throughout the day all fairgoers can refuel at the food court where a range of tasty ‘Asian tapas’ will be available. Expat Events will host a cosy bar with lounge music and drinks during the afternoon and everyone is welcome to stick around for the after party.

Around 200 standholders are expected at the fair with information islands for Activities, Local Municipalities, Careers & Education, Family & Health, Housing, as well as Business Services and Providers. There will also be a designated area for Sports & Social Clubs and Community Groups. ACCESS, the volunteer organisation which has been serving the international community for the past 25 years, is back as an organising partner. The event sponsors include the City of The Hague, ABN AMRO and Shell.

Entry tickets (at the door) are five Euro’s including a free drink in the lounge. Children and young people under 18 can enter free if accompanied by an adult.

The British Embassy celebrates the birthday and diamond jubilee of HM Queen Elizabeth II. The British Ambassador Paul Arkwright invited The Underground to celebrate the Queen’s birthday and diamond jubilee at his private Residence on Wednesday the 13th of June.

The sun was shining and the magnificent gardens were the perfect setting for celebratory drinks and nibbles.

Everything about the event was British. The food was provided by Jamie Oliver’s Fifteen restaurant, the Ridgeview bubbles were from the South Downs of England and the music was provided by the British School, to name just a few of the typically British elements of the event.

Paul Arkwright spoke about a GREAT Britain during his speech. “The Olympic and Paralympic Games provide an opportunity to showcase Britain’s proud heritage and excellence in many fields. From science to the arts, from sport to business and innovation, Britain has achieved a successful mix of tradition and modernity.”

After a little joke about the Dutch performance during the European Championship he toasted to the Queen, the good Dutch-UK relationship and all things British. Cheers!

Artist Marjolein van der Sluis gave a demonstration of her Art & Etiquette classes for kids on Saturday, 30 June 2012 at the Christus Triumfator Church in The Hague. She organised this event for parents and children to give a taster of her classes starting in September 2012 at this church. She gave a small demonstration of her classes, which will pull your child into the wondrous world of artists such as Monet as well as French haute cuisine, painting and manners. The highlight of these classes is the end exhibition in which the children can exhibit their own artwork.

Marjolein’s philosophy is that children should develop an interest in the world of art and decorum at a young age as it helps them to feel more secure in the real world. It is important to give them a basis in decorum before they go off to secondary school.

The classes will start in September 2012 and will be held at the Christus Triumfator Church, Juliana van Stolberglaan 154, The Hague.

How to Wear THE TUBE TOP AND SHORTS

Let’s talk tube tops and shorts. It’s a look tons of women sport during the summer. Some can pull it off really well, while others don’t quite get it right. Here is my formula to make this look work for you regardless of body type.

TUBE TOP You’ll need a nice non-see through one that fits snug, but not too tight. You don’t want anything hanging out. Bonus if it’s a bodysuit. It will make it much easier to tuck into your shorts!

SHORTS Go for a pair that has a mid to high rise. This will elongate the leg and flatter your figure by showcasing your waist. Make sure the shorts are not too tight or too short.

Yes – you’ve guessed it, our very own stunt mole on its way to bungee jump off the pier at Scheveningen.

Having spent twenty hours making the head and another couple furring it up with Christine (La Sartoria) I was more worried about the head coming off and drifting out to sea, never to be seen again, than the person actually risking their life for a good shot for The Underground.

The mole couldn’t wait to don the suit and although everyone had huge smiles and sarcastically encouraging remarks I’m sure the

most enormous smile I’ve ever seen disappeared under our mascot’s head. My hero was actually looking forward to it.

As the mole climbed into the cage I screamed, ‘Don’t forget to hold your head on’, which also managed to bring screams of laughter from the moles entourage, but I was deadly serious. Moley dove elegantly out of the cage to an audience lined along the pier and yes, he was holding his head on. As I helped remove it, I could hear muttering ’again, again.’

Our mole loved the bungee jump and unfortunately also the suit, which somehow seems to have attached itself permanently. So, if you see an outsized mole wandering aimlessly through The Hague just guide it to the nearest spot it can do a stunt. Thank you.

Cycling through the many flavours of �e Hague • by Mai Ramos Need a break from your exams? Can’t wait to take a holiday? If so, grab a bike, call some friends, and follow a ‘snack tour’ in The Hague. You will have a great day out discovering local hot spots to find all the ingredients you need for a picnic. Besides, it will be an opportunity to learn about some of the curiosities in the city where you live. Pay attention, the tour starts now!

To begin with, this special tour in which historic anecdotes and local delicatessens are combined, you need a departing point. For instance, ‘Paleis Noordeinde,’ right in the centre of The Hague. Although this building is a reference point for tourists, there is a misconception regarding the meaning of the hoisted flag. Whereas many people believe that a raised flag means that the Queen is in her office, the real meaning is that the Queen is on Dutch territory.

After this clarification, it’s time to collect some treats for the picnic, don’t you think? Close to the Palace you will find the oldest bakery in the city: ‘t Bakkertje’ (Oude Molstraat 38). Besides bread, you can try one of the local specialities, ‘De Haagse Kakker’; a sweet dough that is perfect for dessert time. To get some energy before carrying on with the tour, you can indulge yourself with the best brownies in town!

Before leaving this area, have a short stop at ‘De Paap’ (Papestraat 32).

Many famous singers and bands such as Golden Earring and Anouk started here. Still today, it is one of the few places where live music is played almost seven days a week.

To burn the chocolate that you have just eaten, cycle around the centre and find more curiosities from the past. You can go to ‘De Plaats,’ a central square close to the Buitenhof where many executions took place.

Nowadays, the only remains from that time is the gate of the oldest prison in Holland. From this square, you also have a great view of the ‘Hofvijver;’ a natural lake that begins in the dunes near Kijkduin and ends in front of the Dutch parliament.

Time for more food, don’t you think? A delicacy you can’t miss is the Dutch sushi, better known as ‘haring’. You can have very fresh ones in a street stall next to the Buitenhof but be careful with the seagulls as they will try to have a bite too!

If you prefer to skip this and instead get something sweeter, go to ‘De Notenkoning’ (Grote Halstraat 16) and have some home-made ‘pindakaas’.

There is also a large variety of nuts with exotic flavours such as curry or wasabi. To add some curiosities to this halt, opposite to the shop is an old town hall where people still get married.

So far, you have gathered a few treats for the final picnic but haven’t found any drink to take along. To solve this, go to the distillery ‘Van Kleef’ (Lange Beestenmarkt 109). As alcohol is very flammable, its production has been removed from the city centre. However, the original location remains open as a museum and shop. Here you will find an endless list of liquors flavoured with natural leaves. As a remark of its prestige, keep in mind that when the official guide of the Dutch telephone company was created in 1883, Van Kleef was reachable under the dial 1!

Just before the picnic starts, you need to have one more stop in your ‘snack tour’ to find some food to eat with the bread. The Haagse Markt (Herman Costerstraat) is the best place to go. With over 500 stalls, this open market is the largest one in Europe so finding what you need is guaranteed.

Finally, lunch time has arrived so you are free to cycle towards the spot you like the most and enjoy the rest of the day with your Dutch delicacies. If you need a hint, go to the Paleistuin, a quiet garden in the middle of the city where you can see the Royal Stables and the Royal Archives.

If you prefer, peddle toward Lange Voorhout, a street where many embassies are located. Here you will find a monastery and church from the 14th century, the British Embassy which resembles the British prime minister’s house, and one of the most expensive hotels in town: ‘Hotel des Indes’. As an anecdote, you should know that many parties for high-ranked Nazis were held in this hotel while a Jewish family was hidden at the top of the building!

Another spot to see is the highest court of Holland, ‘De Hoge Raad der Nederlanden,’ a beautiful building constructed when Napoleon was King of the Netherlands. If you come here, you will also discover one of the hidden secrets of The Hague: a local horse riding school in the middle of the city.

As you walk along the narrow lane, you might encounter a few dogs, frolicking here or there; an old couple walking and tenderly holding hands, quietly enjoying the peacefulness of the place, or the laughs of children brought there for a Sunday walk with the family.

Home to all hazards, there are a few obstacles to dodge along the way: a hurried biker passing along, vicious puddles of mud blocking your way, or the occasional feisty dog, carelessly set free by his owner.

Nevertheless, the presence of the imposing lake, furrowed by the majestic white swans (not black), perfects this idyllic picture and brings just what was missing to recharge your batteries when you live in a big city.

It is no question that the Dutch like bikes. Photographer Shirley Aguldo went out with the goal to capture this passion and the result is a creative, funny and amazing (just how much can you fit on a bike?!) book entitled Bicycle Mania Holland.

As a born and bred ‘Hagenees’ with a particular interest in history, I thought I knew every single historic building in this city but it was not until last year that I discovered: ‘The Spaansche Hof’. At first glance, the building, situated at the Westeinde, looks like a palace; a hidden gem in the middle of The Hague’s city centre. What I didn’t know was that it served many purposes throughout history and that its history provides a little mystery as well.

The first building at this location originates from 1469 and belonged to several dignitaries before it came into the family of Renesse by marriage. The family did not reside in The Hague and rented the house to none other than Johan de Witt who needed a respectable residence after being installed as the Grand Pensionary of the Dutch Republic. The current Spaansche Hof owes its lavish interior and regal charisma to the Spanish, who bought the building in 1677 and rebuilt the palace to its current state. After the Spanish king sold the Spaansche Hof during the Napoleonic occupation of Holland, the building came into Catholic ownership and for a long time it was rented to diplomatic delegates that needed a residence in The Hague.

However, the most well-known resident of the Spaansche Hof is the ghost of Catherine de Chasseur. Catherine was married to a knight, Gerrit van Assendelft, who at that time resided at the location of what is now the Spaansche Hof. Gerrit met Catherine in France during his law studies; she was the daughter of an innkeeper and not of equal social position. They married, but when Gerrit secretly went back to Holland, he left Catherine behind in France. Catherine travelled after him and forced Gerrit to admit their marriage was lawful. After the birth of their son Claas, Gerrit and Catherine informally divorced. Things took a turn for the worse for Catherine when she was arrested for counterfeiting money and was put to death at the Gevangenpoort by drowning.

It is said that the ghost of Catherine de Chasseur is still haunting the Spaansche Hof and its garden. Catherine has been spotted as an uninvited guest during the many events that are being held at this location. Even more mysterious are the inexplicable puddles of water and leaks that have been found in the building at places where there was not any water supply. For ghost hunters and lovers of ghost stories, this is an indisputable sign that Catherine still wanders down the halls of the Spaansche Hof. Currently, the building of the Spaansche Hof is used as a venue for business meetings, dinners and other events.

The painter, Jan Havickszoon Steen, (1626 – 1679) son of an affluent brewery owner, was born in Leiden. When in 1649 the famous Dutch landscape artist, Jan van Goyen, promoted Steen to his assistant he moved in with the family on the Bierkade (today the Dunne Bierkade 16) in The Hague. The following year Steen married van Goyen’s daughter, Margriet (Grietje).

Jan Steen believed the world was a stage and reflected this in his paintings portraying jovial figures, drinking wine and eating oysters alluding to the erotic connotations of oysters as aphrodisiacs.

Comparing the earthly world to scenes taking place on a stage dates back to antiquity and was commonly used in Dutch genre paintings during the Golden Age. A genre painting was the term used to describe scenes depicting everyday life.

Steen painted numerous tavern scenes and interiors with ordinary people, frequently including a moral integrated into the inscription in a letter.

The saying itself is depicted on a piece of paper the old woman, on the right, is holding: [Liet / Soo voer gesongen soo / na gepepen dat is al lang / g [e] bleken ick sing u vo [or] / so [o] volcht ons na [er] / van een tot hon [derd] jaar].

The moral of the painting refers to the fact that bad behaviour in front of children will be copied. In the painting both parents are seen drinking and smoking.

Grietje’s posture symbolizes laziness and carelessness, providing a bad example.

The extravagant table with offerings of fruit and oysters, again, is a moralising message depicting excess and immodesty.

It was designed as a defence from invasion from Britain. In 1942, the dune areas of Wassenaar, Scheveningen and Duindorp were declared Sperrgebiet, following this over 30.000 homes in Duindorp and Scheveningen were evacuated and many were demolished. Largescale evacuations took place with over 140.000 residents and more than 28.550 homes and trees cleared. Many of the evacuees were then relocated to Aalten, Gelderland.

As if refusing to be forgotten, buried in the dunes, overlooking Nieboerweg, Zeezwaluwhof and the bridge over the canal, is a large German communications bunker ‘Hoge Nol’. Duindorp residents, returning from Gelderland, recount standing on the site of Hoge Nol so that they could see their homes, which they had to leave some years before and were being used as the internment camp.

The most recent succession of curious ironies associated with Duindorp occurred in 2010 when Hoge Nol was the subject matter of project ‘Dunepark’. This was the work of the French artist Cyprienne Gaillard, who unearthed and reburied the bunker to demonstrate to the community the transformations it is undergoing and its significance. Gaillard obliquely comments through his work change, drawing attention to the shortsighted demolition of pre-war architecture, such as in Duindorp.

To some, the housing is outmoded and dated and to others it has value and a unique beauty. Dunepark was one of a number of Gaillard’s parallel artistic projects in Europe including ones in Berlin and Glasgow.

‘De Parade’ stops in The Hague for the 15th time, in a history of travelling theatre •

The art of travelling theatre is coming to ‘Westbroekpark’ in The Hague on 6 July.

‘De Parade’ is an international travelling theatre festival with more than 20 years of history. Inside a cluster of tents, there will be performances of theatre, film, music and dance for young and old.

‘De Parade’ dates back to one of the most internationally famous travelling theatres: ‘Boulevard of Broken Dreams’. It ran in the late 1980s and made a furore around Europe and Canada. After its end, the founder Terts Brinkhoff established ‘De Parade’ in 1990. The travelling festival has now turned 22 years old and has an annual turn-out of more than 200,000 visitors.

Every year the public can choose from a selection of performances, normally produced especially for ‘De Parade’. This year Ellen ten Damme is going to present songs from her newest album ‘It was Raining Sunlight’. The multi-talented Dutch singer and actress will also be joined by the extravagant Sven Ratzke in a unique duo performance.

Among the many theatre troupes present at ‘De Parade’, acts like ‘Michiel de Regt & En Consorten’ and ‘Tin Men & the Telephone’ draw much attention.

A musical theatre about the murder of a cartoon character, or a mixture of DJ-samples and live soundscapes, will be Michiel de Regt’s performance.

The guys behind ‘Tin Men & the Telephone’ will do their usual set of experimental jazz involving visuals, ambient sounds and theatre performance. If you are in a mood for jazz that not just gives you the vibe, but musically surprises you, the band is a ‘must-see’.

Roadgrill 2012: Heavy Metal Like You’ve Never Tasted It Before At the crisis-friendly €20 admission, the ticket price is the only thing that’s cheap about this summer’s tastiest music festival • by Richard Morris Some things just naturally go together—gin and tonic, strawberries and cream, Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers, hutspot and rookworst—but when a group of loyal fans of the Dutch heavy metal band Roadkill asked the veteran rockers to play at a party a few summers back, no one could have ever imagined that what was born that day would create yet another soon to be time honoured coupling: heavy metal music and barbecue!

According to the brainchild of Gary Verwey, Roadkill’s drummer and tour manager for the internationally acclaimed Dutch rock band Golden Earring, the festival came about purely by accident. ‘The fans were the ones who organized this,’ recalls Verwey. ‘They wanted us to play and then someone brought a grill and some steaks and stuff and we had a good old time. It was such a big success that we decided to organize another festival the following year and the name Roadgrill, which is a play on the band’s name, was perfect so it stuck’.

The sixth edition of Roadgrill will take place on Saturday, July 28th in Rotterdam and at the crisis-friendly € 20 admission; the ticket price is the only thing that’s cheap about this summer’s tastiest music festival. Not only are festival-goers treated to some of Europe’s best heavy metal, they are offered a massive all-you-can-eat barbecue feast that only ends when the proverbial cows come home. The only additional expense not covered in the ticket price is beer, which at one euro fifty for nearly half a litre of suds, will hardly set anyone back.

Headlining this year’s Roadgrill are German power metal masters Primal Fear, whose newest album, ‘Unbreakable,’ is the band’s ninth studio album in their fifteen year history as one of Germany’s top selling heavy metal acts. Greek metal gods Firewind, powered by lead guitarist Gus G., who may be better known as Ozzy Osbourne’s guitarist, also tops this year’s bill.

In addition to Roadkill, who will be performing with a ‘special guest’ on two songs in their set, the festival will be rounded off by three Dutch bands, Picture, touted as the Netherlands’ first heavy metal band founded in 1979; Boneheadz, a Rotterdam-based hard rock cover band; and newcomers Lord Volture, who are gaining ground and quickly becoming recognised as one of Europe’s must see heavy metal acts.

Verwey considers Roadgrill a labour of love. He keeps the price of admission low and counts on donations and sponsorship to cover most of the festival’s expenses, though he admits to paying a portion of the costs out of his own pocket. ‘The payback is after the festival,’ says Verwey. ‘When people tell me they had a great time and the bands say they had a blast playing and that everyone is looking forward to the next edition, it makes it all worthwhile. It’s hard work though, hundreds of hours of planning and preparation and tens of thousands of Euros that come into play, and I say every year that I’ll never do it again but when I see those bands jamming and nearly a thousand fans enjoying a great day of music, food and camaraderie, it’s clearly worth it and it quickly sinks in that I’ll be doing this again next year and the next’.

URBAN LEGENDS Gerard Fieret •

If you look at Gerard Petrus Fieret’s latest photos, without knowing a thing about him, he will easily pass as homeless.

His trademark; long white beard, baggy clothes and carrying buckets full of grain on the handlebars of his vintage bicycle.

But don’t let yourself be fooled, this man has offered his fair share of art to the Dutch nation.

Visual artist, poet and photographer, originally from The Hague, Gerard P. Fieret had an eccentric life and it’s all captured in his photographs.

He started to express himself through camera lenses in 1965, after he studied drawing, painting and photography at the Royal Art Academy in The Hague.

Back then (1960-1970), his unorthodox approach to art was over criticised, gaining more recognition in the late eighties and after his death. Until 1980 he produced a relentless, at the edge of obsessive, stream of black and white photos, as if he tried to take a strong, hungry bite from the tasty life which was revealed to his eyes.

His most favourite subject, women, were captured in intimacy, some of them with a touch of what romantics would call “bedroom eyes”.

He revealed legs, breasts, abdomens or sexual parts, even his own.

He offers you some innocent, intimate poses, describing a slightly voyeuristic character, but Gerard is not a creep, he collaborates with his models. The more fragile his models look, the more unmanufactured his photos are.

Fieret would hate the flawlessness of processed pictures of today and he would be in the front row of many courts trying to protect his photos from piracy. The artist was also known for his copyright fear, signing his photos more than once, discretely, and then placing business copyright stamps with his name on them.

Gerard Fieret was a star on the streets of The Hague, comparable with, for example, The Elephant Man, the naked tattooed appearance from Barcelona’s streets. He used to have a daily habit, travelling with his buckets of grain on his bike, just to feed the pigeons, his favourite birds, which he evoked several times in his photos.

Gerard’s creation is an authentic, vital gallery of feelings and shapes, consisting of naked self-portraits, mopeds, ducks, people at carnivals, naked women, dressed women, pigeons, In February 2004, the prestigious American girls in miniskirts and much more. Gerard Fieret’s photos are never perfect, because life, in his perspective, seems to be imperfect as well. His artistic vision includes photos populated by ghostly, shadowy appearances, lights, stamps and scratches.

Even if the Dutch artist tends towards a flawless and meaningful piece of art, from 1971 he started to develop a severe paranoia after several “bad experiences” with curators and museums. His pathological scare marked a new age of his art and he started to stamp the pictures he took.

Fieret has maintained a studio practice, with his “hands dirty”, in the middle of his creation. He used simple 35 mm cameras, creating a sort of confrontational mood with his subjects and giving the impression that you are looking at some sort of modern performance.

From outside, Fieret’s work looks like exuberant and sensual work, but starting with the 21st century, he began to be recognised as one of the most important Dutch graphic artists.

Gerard Petrus was mentioned by some critics as a possible contributor to the Dada movement.

Actually, his whole life was a bit unaccustomed: he was living in a cluttered basement, stocking his photos in closets, containers or on the floor, like some worthless rubbish, despite his fear of somebody stealing his lifetime’s work.

This is one of the main reasons why his entire legacy could have never been totally tracked down.

However, he took thousands of photos starting with the late sixties, when he bought his first camera and started to capture what he has called “a kaleidoscopic totality of life”, a chiaroscuro experiment which balances between craft and pure chance.

In 2004, when he turned 80, The Hague Museum of Photography honoured its valuable citizen with a major retrospective exhibition of his work.

This post-war photographer was not well known by the Dutch people, the hype around him, even internationally, came only in his last years. In February 2004, the prestigious American magazine ‘Art and Auction’ paid homage to Fieret, followed in the spring of the same year, by another international magazine publication, ‘Eye’.

In 2008, Gerard disappeared from the landscape of The Hague’s streets, as he was living in a nursing home. He died one year later, on January 2009, 3 days after his 85th birthday, in his hometown.

I’ve been searching for a good Italian restaurant since I moved to the Netherlands. My quest has led me to not so great food for a great price, decent food for a not so decent price and Italian food that was neither good nor Italian. Therefore, when I had the opportunity to meet Monica Braccini, chef and owner of Ristorante Da Braccini, I jumped at the chance.

With Italian roots and having grown up in her father’s restaurant, Italian cooking is in Monica’s blood. And the moment you step into her restaurant you can feel that background oozing out in the aromas that float in the air and in the modern décor with just the right amount of Italian class.

If you like your coffee, tea or chocolate to be a little more than ‘just ordinary’, try visiting De Smaak Republiek.

Freshly opened in March this speciality shop, run by Julie Fisher and Esther Tak, offers a huge range of coffee beans, leaf tea and exotic chocolate.

‘Fair-trade,’ ‘organic,’ and ‘singleorigin’ are the key words for this shop; while ‘exotic’ doesn’t quite contain the variety of chocolate they have on offer (milk chocolate with almonds, orange and cardamom, anyone?).

You won’t hear the shouts of ciao bella or mama mia in Da Braccini, which opened its doors in November 2007, but you will find a menu - that changes every three weeks - made up of fresh, healthy and mainly organic ingredients. ‘We serve honest Italian food,’ explained Monica.

A few minutes later and I was tucking into that honest food in the form of a plate full of pasta con pesto di asparagi e noci (that’s pasta with pesto of green asparagus and hazelnuts to those of you non-Italian speakers) and pasta con caprino e limone (pasta with goat’s cheese and lemon). Within two bites I could easily tell, this was the Italian restaurant I had been searching for.
