Weed culture should be included on the National Cultural Heritage List. This is how David Rietveld, member of The Hague Greens council sees things. In his view, since the first coffee shop was opened, 40 years ago, the Dutch soft drug policy and coffee shops have become world famous.

The centre of The Hague is one of the top five office locations in The Netherlands. According to a list put together by property consultant Jones Lang LaSalle, The Hague is number five in the top office locations in the Netherlands. In order to create this list, around 11,000 buildings from 50 municipalities were studied.

Hello everyone, Here’s another piece written by your very own village idiot.

Although, things can actually get crazier than I am. Take the elections, for instance. This country is full of idiots who think they can actually run the country. We even had the Pirate Party this time around, though I think their candidate had undoubtedly watched too many films.

By the way, what do you think about the political plans in the Netherlands to introduce a sort of apartheid for people who smoke weed by making it mandatory to use a wietpas (weed pass)? It’s unbelievable!

Anyway, let’s talk about our little club [ADO]. We’re playing better and better and you can clearly see more automatic response in team play. I’m really amused by the fact that Feyenoord’s deal with Lex Immers, besides the money, also included Kevin Janssen.

This boy just seems to be making more progress every week and I believe he could become one of the top players in the Eredivisie.

Then we have Tjaronn Chery, who is showing us exactly what I realised last year; he is a born footballer. One of the sort who, as a child, took his football to bed, hid it under his chair at school and even had the courage to ask for it back from the angry neighbour after booting it through his window. We have in Rydel Poepon a strong, hard working striker who makes sure the midfielders can get themselves into a scoring position and that is what makes our team so very strong this year.

Yes, it’s going to be a wonderful season and I am sure that we will qualify for the Europa League. I predict that before the ink has dried on this issue we will have beaten Ajax.

No more coin parking meters in The Hague. As of September, The Hague Municipality began replacing the old coin parking meters.

The new machines will allow drivers to pay either by bank card or by mobile telephone. First to be replaced were the parking meters in the city centre.

More international NGOs open offices in The Hague. While in 2002, 60 international NGOs had offices in The Hague, by 2012 their number has reached 120. The growing trend is expected to persist and that is a great advantage for the city’s job market.

The Hague cuts funds on overpaid bosses in the public sector.

The city council has agreed to cut down on financing a number of companies which pay more than the recommended maximum for public sector workers.

The first Turkish museum opens in The Hague. The Turks Museum Nederland is located in the traditionally Turkish neighbourhood of Moerwijk. The museum presents a history of the relationship between the Netherlands and Turkey as well as the story of the first migrants.

Leyweg anti-crime project was nominated for a prize. The crime level in the Leyweg shopping area was brought down since the implementation of the project in 2011. The project was based on the collaboration of police, volunteers and shop owners. The Hein Roethofprijs is a national safety prize whose winner will be announced on October 29th.

Parties to thank The Hague’s volunteers. More than 100,000 people do volunteer work in The Hague. In order to thank them for their contributions, The Hague Municipality organised a party for the volunteers in each of the city’s districts. More parties will take place in November and December. Volunteers can register for these parties starting from 15 October via www.hofnet.nl/vrijwilligersfeesten.

Changes with the household waste calendar. Starting December 2012, residents of The Hague will no longer receive a printed copy of the household waste calendar. This will be replaced by the digital version, available for download on the website www.denhaag.nl.

Energy efficient lighting at the City Hall. The Hague Public Library and City Hall will become more energy efficient in the coming months. This comes as a result of the instalment of 180 solar panels on the roof of the City Hall. The Hague aims to become a climate-neutral city by 2040.

Challenge completed: Kidnap and Paint

A

rmed with a pen, a statement of intention, a skirt made from copies of The Underground and my powers of persuasion - I headed off for the first part of a challenge set by Studio Jean: ask (bribe or kidnap) five people to help me complete the second part of the challenge, which was to paint three van Gogh canvases.

My first potential customer ignored the sound advice provided by Nike and would not ‘just do it’. Several failed Nike attempts later, I decided to change tactics. I quickly discovered that going down on one knee and begging works for more than just proposals. One down four to go.

Whilst contemplating the list of artistic friends I am proud to know and yet stupidly did not consider planting in the crowd, I remembered that a graphic designer friend of mine would be here. Brilliant! Two down, three to go.

Time was not on my side, no matter what Mick Jagger proclaims, and whilst I loved all the attention my skirt was getting, it was distracting me from my mission. Out of the corner of my eye I spotted Vincent van Gogh himself in conversation with someone looking very much like Frida Kahlo. This had to be a sign, hopefully not of the two fingered variety. My approach was unflinching and it rewarded me with two more members to add to my merry band. Four down, one to go.

My luck held yet again and whilst attempting to persuade my last victim, number five spontaneously volunteered with just a couple of minutes to spare.

After a short introduction by Jean and Jocelyn of Studio Jean, the six of us started splashing paint eagerly onto the canvas. Due to the constant flow of excellent tips we received, the images actually started to resemble van Gogh paintings.

As I have the attention span of a - OMG is that a paintbrush – I was constantly distracted by what was happening around me and started to struggle. After about an hour and a half I needed to use the ladies’ room, so I went out for a smoke instead.

Two and a half hours later and the results were surprisingly good. Good enough even to auction off for our favourite charity, the Jacobs Hospice (www.jacobshospice.nl).

I could not have pulled off this challenge without the help of Lara, Silva, Elena, Trevor and especially Joyce, who worked on the details up to the very last minute. A huge thank you to all of you for putting in so much effort.

Reina van Nieuwkerk-Rácz finds Holland’s hidden treasures

When I was young, a family weekend away could entail anything from swimming amongst giant turtles in a warm African ocean to visiting a haram and coming face to face with a very large, bare chested eunuch in a remote desert village. It may therefore come as a bit of a surprise that the most exciting days of my early teens always fell on a Wednesday. Wednesday was mail day.

If friends and family back home in Holland thought my life exotic, then I thought theirs doubly so. Slicing open the wafer thin ‘Airmail’ envelopes would make my heart beat faster. The accounts of everyday events happening in a world so far and different from mine worked like a magical chord connecting me to my motherland. The postcards, we pinned to a cork board or taped to windows where they remained till the piles of sturdy cardboard boxes announced the next move.

Last week, out of the blue, a picture from long ago flashed through my mind - of men in traditional clothes and straw hats carrying big, waxy cheeses on sled-like kind of things - you’ve probably seen the postcards too!

A bit of research sadly revealed Holland’s only remaining cheese trade market is in Alkmaar, open Fridays from 10am to 12.30pm, April till September.

Oh dear, too late. But I continued to read on about the city of Alkmaar and its very proud history.

I should say proud with a capital ‘P’. During the Eighty Years’ War the Spaniards set up camp in the Oudorperpolder just across from Alkmaar. From there they bombarded the city with their canons. The people of Alkmaar, helped by a group of hired privateers, fought bravely, showering the approaching army with hot tar and flaming branches.

When the Dutch punctured the dikes behind enemy lines, the Spanish soldiers literally got cold feet. Unable to deal with the cold and unrelenting conditions, they fled making Alkmaar the first city to triumph over the Spaniards.

This victory, which took place in 1573, is still celebrated each year on 8 October.

Besides the spectacular two hour procession there’s lots to do with live music in various locations.

We’ve Got an Office The Underground is happy to announce that from October 1st, we will have a proper office to work from.

The office is located at Koninginnegracht 72 in The Hague (opposite the Shell building). This means that we can finally offer our interns and volunteers a place to meet, learn and brainstorm! If you are interested in volunteering or contributing to the paper please do not hesitate to drop in for a coffee!

Marco Raaphorst explores the link between music, poetry and language

A month ago, on the 11 August an interesting festival took place at the beautiful Westbroekpark called Poezie aan de Waterkant (Poetry at the Waterside). As you might have guessed, it was all about poetry - spoken poetry that is and mostly in Dutch.

Many people in this world are illiterate. They can speak in a certain language, but can’t read or write it. Their eyes can’t turn the images of letters into words which in turn would create images in their brains. It fascinates me, because their world is simplified to seeing and hearing. We, the non-illiterate, are very much aware of the written word. We see it everywhere. Some people even ‘see words’ when they hear stories from other people.

Ô I am vegetarian but sometimes I eat meat.Õ Ô I am 30 years old and I still donÕ t know how to fry an egg.Õ An impossible love, a strange addiction, something that you regret, a family matter, embarrassing information, a deep desire… Are you hiding something you really want to get rid of?

All we need is text. We read the title above a YouTube video and when we like what we’re reading we click on the play button. And sometimes the non-English videos have subtitles.

We put nametags on people, list ingredients on products and we put ‘Exit’ and ‘No Access’ on boards so that we know where to go and where not to go. We need guides for just about everything.

Since 2007, The Museum for Communication in The Hague has been running the Briefgeheimen (secret letters), a wall full of beautiful postcards that contain confidential information written by anonymous people.

You can create your own card at the museum itself, behind a red curtain. Or, for even more privacy, your card can be made at home and then sent to the museum by post. The museum selects the funniest, sweetest and most beautiful ones to hang on the wall, where anyone can read them but no one will ever know who its owner is.

We try to make logical sentences and we try to use clear words. We want people to understand what we’re writing. And writers of fiction and writers of non-fiction both want that too. Writers of poetry on the other hand might want something else. At least some do, I believe.

Poetry might change your view on things because it might create new images in your brain.

Maybe you don’t fully understand what the poet meant or maybe you just like the way the poem sounds.

Poems often use rhyme forms - strong positions which are filled with rhyming words - and most poems use some kind of rhythm made out of words. Therefore, most poems are like songs.

They can be considered great poems that use a basic form of rhyme. In fact, songs and poetry were invented to remember stories more easily – just think about that song that gets stuck in your head all morning!

Maybe you, my dear reader, can’t read a word of Dutch. Speaking it might even be harder to achieve. Consider starting with poetry. Spoken poetry. Just listen to the way it sounds. And listen to some Dutch music. Try to sing along with it.

My daughter of 10 knows more English words than her grandmother because a cool song on YouTube makes her sing along with it. And then she wants to know what it all means and starts to do some research about it.

She always starts with how it sounds and ends up learning a new language.

Experience East European Cuisine in The Hague •

If there is one thing that makes the ‘living abroad’ experience easier, it’s having bits of your own culture in your new home.

Airport security often stumbles and stares when they pull out all kinds of food and spices from my luggage. Little do they know how much I need them kilometres away from home to help make The Hague feel a little less foreign. With this in mind, I decided to take a look into The Hague’s restaurants and shops that offer East European, and in particular Bulgarian, culinary products.

There is such a large international community in The Hague that finding speciality culinary products should be easy. Albert Heijn carries Bulgarian yoghurt, Greek cheese and even Balkan dishes, such as mousska. I remember my grandparents making moussaka, yoghurt, and even cheese- the old fashioned way- from scratch and fresh- when I was little. They were made with love and without preservatives, colours, sweeteners or other artificial additives. ian meals desserts, givehe restaurant a more cssi Café-Bar Suhumi is a Georgian bar and restaurant which directly imports most of its necessary ingredients. From the traditional sulguni cheese they use in the bread dish khachapuri to the dumplings called khinkali, the restaurant offers many Georgian delights directly from ‘home’.

Suhumi has a nice atmosphere and is an established meeting point for many Georgians around South Holland. I personally recommend trying Georgian wine together with baklagani or delicious aubergines with walnuts.

With such a wide variety of East European cuisine in The Hague, it’s easy to visit a new country every night of the week!

It’s Greek to Me was recommended by a friend, because of its nice ‘Greeky’ interior. Souvlaki, moussaka and bifteki were the restaurant’s specialities of the day. The owners have been in the catering business in The Hague for more than a decade. Not surprisingly, they have connections with supply markets in the Netherlands and Belgium, from where they stock most of their Greek food and drinks. For Nellie Mykoniou, ‘hard work and energy, plus the quality of Greek culinary traditions’ are the things that matter the most in order to survive as a foreign cuisine restaurant. She is also encouraged by the multicultural turnout in her restaurant and by the fact that so many people want to experiment with traditional Greek dishes.

I heard that Bolyari, the sole Bulgarian restaurant

in The Hague, has a great traditional atmosphere.

Folklore music, traditional tablecloths and the smell of meat on skara (Bulgarian for grill) greet you when you enter the restaurant. A rich menu, including many Bulgarian salads, main dishes, skara, vegetarian meals and desserts, gives the restaurant a more classical and alternative cuisine feeling to the restaurant than a simple national one. ‘Always maintaining Bulgarian culinary traditions and overall quality of products’ is what keeps the owners motivated.

They recommended that I try Sach Bolyari- grilled meat and vegetables served in hot Bulgarian pottery.

The Bulgarian Rose (Bulgaarse Roos) on Beeklaan and Bolyari on the Raamstraat stock many of their products through large distributors within the Netherlands and Belgium. The Bulgarian Rose is the oldest of three Bulgarian shops in The Hague; however, each shop has their own niche leaving no room for competition between them. Bulgarian Rose carries a great variety of Bulgarian products. While the shop on Rijswijkseweg also has many Bulgarian products, but it is more popular for its doner. The newest banicharnica (Bulgarian for ‘patisserie’) on Eliasstraat has its own baker for banitsa, the Bulgarian salted pastry with white cheese, and also other typical Bulgarian pastries.

Surprisingly, there are many Polish shops in The Hague. Deli on van Musschenbroekstraat and Kamilski on Zoutmanstraat are both loaded with Polish delicacies like pierogi, special cabbage (sour cabbage or sauerkraut), the national dish biroji, and dried kabanosy sausages.

If you prefer cooking at home Matroesjka on Piet Heinstraat offers Lithuanian, Bosnian, Russian, Serbian, and Georgian products. It might seem small at first, but the shop offers many new and interesting products, such as Bosnian coffee and kaymak. For its owner, the shop is ‘a new experience, where meeting and helping people is what matters the most’.

Overall, the east European market has grown to be more and more diverse in The Hague.

Most importantly, with a good combination of restaurants, shops, and suppliers you can learn a lot about the cuisine of most east European countries and even learn some underground culinary secrets. With such a wide variety of East European cuisine in The Hague, it’s easy to visit a

new country every night of the week!

Taste Week 2012 (Week van Smaak) is a week-long celebration and recognition of good, honest, and healthy food. A Beer Shop for Novices and Experts Alike • by Molly Quell

There are some places well worth leaving The Hague for, especially when beer is involved. Flink Gegist, a new speciality beer store in Delft, is one such example.

Despite years of previous experience in the hospitality industry, co-owner Jasper van Schie admits that he and his wife/business partner Marijke Vuik, do not have an official business strategy when it comes to the store. They just want people to enjoy beer as much as they do – and they really do enjoy beer. Currently operating Bier Café Doerak in Delft, the duo were looking for a new challenge, which they found when a location ideal for a beer shop became available on the Oosteinde in Delft.

Flink Gegist, which roughly translates to ‘substantially fermented’, will carry around 700 different beers,

including a wide selection of Dutch microbrews.

But this won’t be a shop that has you stumbling around pretending you know what you are looking for before you grab a random bottle from the shelf.

Van Schie and Vuik have installed a coffee machine so that customers can enjoy a cup of coffee whilst discussing beer with well-informed and welcoming staff. Each beer will even have a specially designed label to explain its qualities – making selection confusion a thing of the past.

‘It’s about the experience more than the product,’ van Schie says. Their goal is to create a friendly atmosphere where novices can feel comfortable asking questions while experts can choose from an expansive selection.

a pinch of salt baking tray, baking paper, two bowls, hand mixer, fork Begin by preheating your oven to 190°C. In one bowl, mix together the peanut butter, butter and both types of sugar. Add the banana to the mix. Sift the flour into the second bowl and mix it together with the baking powder and salt. Add it to the peanut butter - banana mix.

Lay a piece of baking paper on your baking tray, and then form little balls out of your dough (about 3 cm). Arrange the balls on the baking tray and gently flatten them down with your fingers or a fork. Put them high in the oven and leave to bake for about 10 minutes. After baking, remove the tray from the oven and leave the cookies to cool down. Then enjoy!

Cooking Up a Storm with Adjoa Brobey

‘Cooking is my passion and I find it nice to exchange knowledge with other cooking enthusiasts,’ Adjoa Konadu Brobey explains. Due to her modesty, someone might think that she was an amateur cook but surprisingly, she is in fact, an extremely well qualified chef.

Born in Ghana, she followed in the footsteps of her father, who was an army chef during the Second World War feeding the American, British and Italian troops. ‘As a little girl, I was always in the kitchen helping my father.’

Her training in the culinary arts has taken her around the world. ‘After my studies, I decided to continue my studies in the United States. Later, I decided that I wanted to learn a second language and moved to Germany. The family with whom I had stayed with also had French acquaintances and asked me to cook for them regularly.’

From there, she went on to Spa Francorchamps in Belgium and cooked for celebrities. It was during this period that ‘my passion for making desserts arose. I wanted to focus on the skills of the boulangerie, patisserie, and glacerie chocolaterie.’

Since moving from Belgium to the Netherlands, Brobey has worked in many fine establishments, including The Golden Tulip Hotel in Zoetermeer,’t Gouden Hooft in The Hague, and the luxurious Ninaber van Eyben, one of the most expensive lunchrooms in The Hague. She is now working as a chef for the catering of Aramco.

‘As a little girl, I was always in the kitchen helping my father.’

‘Recently, I started my own company and would like to give cooking workshops and provide catering. The idea arose because many people ask me how they can learn to cook.’ The workshops include Mediterranean, Asian, French and vegetarian cooking but also ‘cooking without borders’ which involves combining styles and ingredients from around the world. Each of these workshops includes preparing and cooking a starter and finger food, a main course and dessert. Quality ingredients are provided, as are cooking utensils and aprons for 50 Euros per head for a four hour workshop.

However, that is not all that Brobey offers. ‘Hephzibah’, a Hebrew word meaning ‘my delight is in her’ is also the name of Brobey’s catering company. Hephzibah caters for birthdays, gourmet dinner parties, weddings, corporate meetings and wine and cheese tasting events.

For some expats, it can be a surprise to find that Halloween hasn’t made much headway in the Netherlands. That doesn’t mean that you have to stay at home reminiscing over home-made costumes and bags full of sweets. Why not throw your own Halloween party?

Whether you have children or not, Halloween can still be great fun. In fact, there’s nothing more amusing than seeing the forty-something crowd dressed up as witches and vampires, cackling the night away while drinking copious amounts of ‘punch’. If you do decide to throw a Halloween party, here are some recipes to both scare and delight your guests.

For the Children: For a children’s party, the perfect centrepiece for the celebration must be the Halloween cake! Bake a sponge cake and once it has cooled, cover it with white icing made from sugar and water. Using a skewer, draw a circle in the centre of the cake. Then draw five evenly spaced lines radiating out from the centre to the edge of the cake - creating the perfect spider’s web. Lastly, pop a fake spider in the centre and get ready for the ooohh’s and aaah’s.

For finger food, you could try, er, fingers. Using a normal cookie recipe, tear off a golf ball-size piece of dough and use your hands to roll it into a finger-size cylinder. Place all the rolled pieces into the oven for about ten minutes and when cooled, place an almond on one end and paint it red with food colouring.

For some ghostly grub, try making marshmallow squares in the shape of ghouls by melting white marshmallows in a pan, adding Rice Krispies cereal and then pouring the mixture into a butter-lined baking tray and leaving it in the fridge overnight.

Once set, cut the mixture into rectangles, zigzag one end and rounding off the other. Decorate with icing for scary eyes and gaping mouths and you’ll have some ‘malloween ghouls’.

N.B. If you are having some trouble tracking down white marshmallows and Rice Krispies cereal, try Makro (if you have a membership card), Toko’s or Kelly’s Expat Shopping.

For the Adults: For an adult party, creepy cocktails are a must. And it’s the punch bowl that everyone is going to be gathered around rather than the cake. Blood red sangria or a morbidly dark, blackcurrant based punch are perfect. But to really top it off, fill a rubber glove with water, freeze it until the party and then remove the hand from the glove and place it in the punch bowl. It’s best to have a few back up hands in the freezer for the undoubtedly frequent refills. This should have your guests keeling over until they rise from the dead the next morning, probably wishing they were dead.

To make a green zombie cocktail add the following and give a good stir: • • • • • •

1 oz dark rum 1 oz gold rum 1 oz light rum 1/2 oz green Curacao liqueur 2 oz pineapple juice, 2 oz guava juice A dash of lime

here is definitely something for everyone at the largest outdoor market in Europe. Tanya Braaksma explores the Haagse Markt to discover its history, the best places to get your goodies, and how to navigate the market like a professional.

Nestled along the Herman Costerstraat, between the Hobbemaplein and the Hoefkade, the Haagse Markt has called its current location home since 1938. The market was originally located on the Prinsestraat, but a lack of space necessitated a move to what was then considered the outskirts of The Hague. It now boasts over 500 stalls and welcomes between 40,000 to 60,000 visitors daily.

The choice can be overwhelming, but the market, in particular the fish, meat and produce section, is an absolute delight for your senses.

Whether it’s a vendor calling out his wares or the sight of glistening, in-season fruit and vegetables, you’ll always find what you’re looking for.

Here are some suggestions to get you started: • Volendammer Vishandel, P. Bond & Zonen Fresh seafood and service with a smile. Located in the aisle closest to the Herman Costerstraat.

Weekly shopper Peter Carlberg offers some sage advice: ‘Arrive early or better yet, go during the week. It’s less crowded but you get the same great quality. My daughter and I go together now and she helps me choose what fruits and vegetables to get. At the Haagse Markt, I can find all the produce I need for the week to come.’

What’s in a street name: Hofplaats, Where History Meets Food •

W

hat is the first article of the Dutch Constitution? If you don’t want to do a boring internet search, a nice walk to Hofplaats will provide the answer. This tiny square is where the constitution bench is located.

The bench is a monument forty-five meters long. Carved on the smooth marble is the first article of the Dutch Constitution, which translates as, ‘All persons in the Netherlands shall be treated equally in equal circumstances. Discrimination on the grounds of religion, belief, political opinion, race or sex or on any other grounds whatsoever shall not be permitted.’

The monument is the first attraction on the Grondwetpad, a walking tour in The Hague that leads to several monuments related to the Constitution. In Hofplaats there are also some bronze tiles that follow the contour of the Spuipoort, a gate through which only ambassadors and leaders of foreign lands could pass to reach the Binnenhof.

Dutch history is not the only reason to visit Hofplaats. If your stomach turns when you hear about vegetables covered in fertilizers, meat loaded with hormones and other unhealthy processes in the food industry, what you should visit is the organic Boerenmarkt, the local farmers market.

Every Wednesday from 9am to 6pm a dozen stalls are set up in Hofplaats.

The farmers themselves sell you the produce and since you are buying directly from the grower, you can ask very specific questions. Meat, vegetables, and fruits are easily found at the stalls, but also nestled amongst the more common items are the ‘forgotten vegetables’.

Food that was common in the past and has disappeared over the years- rutabagas, Chinese artichokes, salsify, and scorzanera are all examples of forgotten vegetables.

Most of these have been forgotten because they were often eaten during the Second World War, thus becoming a symbol of the starvation and misery that many people suffered during that period.

This is unfortunate as many of those vegetables have interesting properties.

For example, the rutabaga is rich in potassium, calcium, phosphorus, vitamin C and can be used in any recipe to replace potatoes.

On Wednesdays, Hofplaats is the perfect place to discover a piece of Dutch history and make culinary memoires.

oing out to eat in a restaurant is usually a fun opportunity to try new cuisine or get a break from cooking.

However, all of that changes when you go out with a small child in tow. Will there be enough high chairs and booster seats? Will the restaurant staff and other diners glare at you through the entire meal?

Picking a kid-friendly place to eat can be a huge challenge. I spoke with some mothers living in The Hague to get their recommendations on the most kid-friendly restaurants in the area. Here are five that made the grade and why:

1.If you have a craving for Italian food, mum Hendrike recommends La

Lanterna on Javastraat. She explains, ‘They are very children-friendly there. They have lots of space for prams and often host children parties.

The food is excellent and not too expensive!’

2.If you want something more traditionally Dutch, head over to Will’s

Pancake House for pannenkoeken and poffertjes. Mum Marilyn said, ‘[They] even offered my son a tour of the kitchen (he’s 18 months old) and a little cone of ice cream.’

3.You can enjoy a nice relaxing meal at Mien koffie en brood. Mum Hester recommended it saying, ‘Mien koffie en brood is great for lunch.

They have lots of room for prams and a corner for kids to play.’

4.For a lively Sunday dinner, head over to Caruso II on Molenstraat.

Mum Carolina likes to go and listen to the live music. ‘Enzo, the owner (I think), is really good with customers and babies. He has even taken our daughter for a walk around the restaurant while we eat sometimes! He takes her to his family’s table when they’re eating there as well…we enjoy it.’

5.My personal recommendation for the list is the Binky Beer restaurant

in Scheveningen. It is close to all of the tourist attractions, has a relaxed atmosphere, offers a large menu, and there are plenty of activities just for kids.

1 Your Institution – A great starting point is to contact your institution to find out about available accommodation. You can always take the institution provided accommodation while continuing your search for alternative cheap housing,

4. City Council - The City Council of The Hague has earmarked buildings that have been abandoned, set for renovation or for destruction and has opened these houses up to students to rent. Many of these buildings are already vacant but they are still in a reasonable condition. The average rental price of these homes is between €200 and a maximum of € 326 per month. A 35-kilometre drive outside of The Hague’s city centre is a brewery that should not be missed if you enjoy the upper echelon of frothy beverages.

Located in the scenic countryside of Het Groene Hart (The Green Heart) in the western part of the Netherlands, is the small and award winning Brouwerij de Molen. This unique microbrewery is housed in a historic 1697 flour mill, from which it gets its name ‘The Mill’, and boasts twenty plus artisan style handcrafted beers – so there is definitely something to suit everyone’s palate.

Don’t let the simple black and white de Molen labels mislead you to believe that it’s just another proverbial Dutch beer. Inspired by the American microbrewery movement, Brouwerij de Molen combines rich colours and complex full-bodied aromas that result in a unique taste unlikely to have rolled across your tongue before. The beer of de Molen is produced in small batches, which allows for creativity in the brewing process and affords the ability to experiment with different recipes, many of which are unrepeatable. The beers have all been given creative names such as Donder & Bliksem (Thunder & Lightning) and Hemel & Aarde (Heaven & Earth).

Across the street is the brewery’s restaurant where you can sit outside on a covered patio and enjoy a cold pint of one of their refreshing beers straight from the tap. If the weather doesn’t cooperate, there is a comfortable and cosy tasting room inside. The restaurant’s menu offers a variety of regional cuisine featuring de Molen brews in many of their gourmet dishes.

I ordered the Vuur & Vlam (Fire & Flames), an aromatic, perfectly carbonated take on an American-style IPA (that’s India Pale Ale to you non-beer buffs out there).

A small beer shop inside the restaurant sells not only the majority of the de Molen gems, but also a nice selection of unusual beers from around the world. As I was walking inside the small cellar, I was overwhelmed by the four walls covered with colourful bottles from floor to ceiling. This was an unexpected bonus, as I was able to purchase a few bottles to take home.

I highly recommend that you make your way out to the picturesque Het Groene Hart countryside and stop at this much talked about and up-and-coming brewery. You won’t be disappointed.

After their three daughters moved out to live on their own, Yevette and René had three spare bedrooms going unused. So they came up with the idea to offer crisis care for children who have problems at home. ‘We can offer them a quiet and warm place to stay,’ René explains and Yvette continues, ‘we are very happy that we can help these children with their problems and give them a chance to think and work on the positive things in their lives.’

With the look of a modern castle, René and Yvette (photo above) built their own home in 2003.

‘Our previous house, which stood on the exact same place where we live now had a lot of expansions and did not create a sense of unity,’ Yvette explained.

‘That’s when we decided to rebuild the house and create a warm and complete home in our own style.’

The couple got into contact with an architect who helped them pick out the perfect design. René and Yvette ‘looked in magazines and decided to give it a modern look but with the effects of a castle. You can find that everywhere in the house, especially in the windows.’

The house has a lovely garden with a lot of colours during the summer months. The garden is connected to the water where the family has a sloop boat, which they use on sunny days. The house itself has many split-levels and is divided into two wings. In the left wing, the living room, kitchen and some ‘chill’ spots are located and in the right wing, are the bedrooms.

For René one of the highlights is their bedroom.

‘Our bedroom is partly underground so if you look through the window, you’ll see the garden and water at eye-level which creates an awesome view.’

Amongst other things, the lowest level of the house includes a washing room, sauna and a bar with a beamer.

The down to earth couple is very much involved in charity. The Verkaart Groep, a technical installation company that was founded in 1963 by Yvette’s father built 72 schools, three medical facilities, a boy’s orphanage and a boarding school in the inlands of Kenya. Yvette told me, ‘it feels good to do

A white-gold ring set with brilliant cut diamonds of excellent colour and clarity. The design consists of clear geometrical forms in an asymmetrical array. This combination of forms is typical for the Art Deco period. Because of the use of white gold and the cut of the diamonds, I would date this ring to around 1935. The design itself is exceptional, clearly influenced by constructivist architecture and is the work of an outstanding designer.

The Community Garden That Keeps on Giving

Is it possible for an art project to benefit a local community? If you step into the Binnendoor, an interactive allotment garden art project (say that three times fast) in The Hague, you’d probably be convinced.

Around 150 people, a couple of artists’ ateliers, and a handful of small business spaces share a housing complex known as the Panderplein – primarily a building that once housed a furniture factory, the 1250m² public square located within was turned into a community garden by local artist Annechien Meier.

Meier started the project Binnendoor as a fusion garden concept where plants and vegetables are grown and tended to by the people living in the surrounding flats. The project not only serves as a network to connect the young and old who inhabit the space but also celebrates biodiversity, environmental responsibility and is at the same time, beautiful to look at. When I spoke to an elderly lady who had just given a tour about the garden, she explained how before there was a lot more noise and that the youngsters would hang around and play football against the walls. That was before the cobblestones were removed and the greenery was planted inside the Panderplein in 2010.

Urban Farming is a growing movement that aims to grow vegetables and fruits in cities.

Today, the communities come together and share a salad or the fruit that grows in their miniature urban farm. The interaction is not only celebrated by working and eating the harvested food, there are also chairs for coffee breaks and a relaxing chat. The Pander inhabitants also organise a small festival that includes musical performances and a feast at the end of the summer - similar to a street party but in the court of the Pander Complex.

The Pander Complex is situated between Brouwersgracht, Buitenom and Spijkermakersstraat. Enter through the public gate at Brouwersgracht and experience this little oasis before the winter hits The Hague.

Artist Inspiration: Annechien Meier’s interest goes further than an interest in food production on urban ground. She’s interested in the way local production and social interaction mix in those locations.

Urban Farming is a growing movement that aims to grow vegetables and fruits in cities. A great example is when the population in Cuba was cut off from food imports and fertilizers twenty years ago, the community started to grow their own food in Havana. Many small producers even started a network of recycling organic waste in order to produce compost.

ubble tea. Tea with bubbles? How does that work? As a self-confessed tea addict I knew I had to find out more about bubble tea, the latest trend in the beverage market. Popular in London and Berlin, bubble tea has come from Taiwan and landed in the form of 8tea5 on Noordeinde in the centre of The Hague.

So what is bubble tea? It is a hot or cold drink with added edible ‘bubbles’ in the form of flavoured chewy tapioca pearls (called boba). I decided to take one for the team and popped along to 8tea5 to experience it for myself. Ordering is a seemingly straightforward but decisive task: choose a drink flavour (either soy milk or fruit flavoured green tea), then choose a bubble flavour. After much deliberation, I went with pineapple tea and mango bubbles and the drinks were brought to us at our table.

‘Popping those bubbles in your mouth makes the whole experience a bit more fun, and good luck trying to get a hold of that last bubble in your cup!’

I was first struck by the size of the straw you are given, it is much wider than the average straw to accommodate the pearls. The tea itself was refreshing: chilled fruity tea half-filled with caviar-like bubbles, topped off with ice cubes that helped to offset the warmth of the day. Your drink comes complete with an element of playfulness, and I have to admit I spent a lot of time playing with the bubbles at the bottom, trying to catch them or prevent them from popping out of the straw and bouncing across the table (failed that one). It is certainly an outside-of-the-box concept. Popping those bubbles in your mouth makes the whole experience a bit more fun, and good luck trying to get a hold of that last bubble in your cup!

While this might be an old spotted for many, for some people 3 Stones will definitely become a new spot. From the shores of Kenya comes an unsuspected and rich cuisine. There Goes Aunt Bep Delivering Dinner Again

ante Bep is the newest delivery idea in The Hague. According to owners Yaron Menneken and Stephan Lems, Tante (aunt in English) Bep is ‘a dear aunt who cares for you and always has something nice for you’. Both Yaron and Stephan have lived abroad and recognise the difficulty in finding good quality restaurants in a new place. To help bridge the gap, they started a delivery service which delivers meals from local restaurants straight to your home.

‘It’s nice to have locals inform you of quality restaurants,’ Menneken says.

Both graduated from local hotel schools and have been working in the food and hospitality industries for most of their lives. They work with a variety of carefully selected restaurants around The Hague. Some they were well acquainted with, while others they have only recently discovered. The restaurants vary in fare from BBQ to Thai. The entrees range in price from €10 to €20.

From each restaurant, they choose a selection of dishes which represent the best that the restaurant has to offer and that will also stand up to the rigors of delivery. The duo tests the deliverability of the dishes by driving them to their maximum delivery distance and then eating them. They have found a few dishes that do not transport well. According to Menneken, ‘Meat that is to be served rare doesn’t transport well. Unless you live five minutes away from the restaurant, it isn’t rare when it arrives’.

Ordering from Tante Bep is done entirely through their website. Customers can select from six to ten different meals, a variety of sides and schedule a delivery time between 5pm and 9pm. When you place your order, it is transmitted directly to the restaurant. Once it is ready it is then delivered to your home. The company makes all of their deliveries via electric scooter.

Currently, Tante Bep are only able to provide meals from one restaurant each day, but they hope to expand their daily selection in the future. To provide their customers with a selection of cuisines, they rotate the restaurant offering the meals daily.

I’ll tell you one thing I miss about life in the UK; my mother’s home cooked dinners. Luckily, I think I may have found a surrogate mother’s dinner to fill the void in Mama’s Koelkast. Created by Aaliyah and her business partner Len Doens Bochhah, the concept of this initiative is very simple - mothers cooking delicious food for you to take away.

It is not a big commercial project out to make vast sums of money through extortionate pricing, nor is it cheap and heart attack inducing fast food. It is simply a group of mothers who get together to share cooking tips and create wonderful food in a homely atmosphere.

Based in Utrecht, the interior of Mama’s Koelkast is a medley of the organised chaotic mess often found in a family living room mixed with kitsch furniture and a warm ambiance.

The mamas come from several different cultural backgrounds including Surinamese and Moroccan, which is reflected in the mouth-watering dishes they

cook. There are five refrigerators (hence the name ‘koelkast’) from which to choose your lovingly prepared supper, each from different countries.

Mama Nadia and Mama Jane are both Mamas at Mama’s Koelkast production kitchen in Almere. Both have children and juggle working as a cooking Mama with family life. Mama Nadia’s refrigerator is Moroccan and she says her favourite dish to cook is the Moroccan bestilla. She loves cooking so much that she dreams one day of opening her own restaurant. Mama Jane’s refrigerator is full of exotic and tasty Surinamese food.

Filling people’s stomachs leaves her feeling satisfied as cooking is both her passion and her hobby.

Dishes cost from € 8.50 and include everything from tajine to petjil with peanut sauce and even meatballs in tomato sauce. The company is planning to branch out to the larger cities of the Netherlands so hopefully The Hague will be welcoming a new branch of Mama’s Koelkast soon. My guess is that it is not only the tastiness of the food that draws people to Mama’s Koelkast, but having dinner made by a Mama.
