The status of European Cultural Capital demands an extensive, varied and high-quality programme encompassing an entire year and plans must incorporate the development of the city in the long term. In 2018 this privilege falls to Malta and to a city in the Netherlands. The Hague aspires to be the Dutch Cultural Capital of Europe. Other candidates are Maastricht, Eindhoven, Utrecht and Leeuwarden. In 1987 Amsterdam held the title and in 2001 Rotterdam.

Greidanus is also a well-known actor and director of De Appel theatre in Scheveningen where he organises marathon performances. An international jury will then decide which bid will be the winner by the end of 2013. ------>continued on page 15
