Happy New Year North Shields Happy New Year! I hope this year brings you health, happiness, and many exciting new beginnings. As we step into 2025, we are thrilled to bring you a fresh issue packed with inspiring stories and a few exciting changes that we believe will make this year truly special for our community.

This month, we’re excited to introduce a new section dedicated to our amazing volunteers—the heart and soul of our magazine. We want to shine a spotlight on the wonderful individuals behind the scenes, helping bring each issue to life. We hope this will inspire others to join us in supporting and celebrating local talent and collaboration.

We’re also over the moon to welcome Alex Wright (Woeman) as our new monthly writer, who will be sharing his insights. Alex’s work will bring a refreshing perspective to the importance of community and well-being, and we can’t wait for you to read his first piece!

This month, we also shine a light on a local hero whose legacy continues to positively impact North Shields. Rowland Lishman, although not a widely known name, has left an indelible mark on our community. More than 60 years after his passing, his philanthropy and selfless contributions still benefit local people, proving that one person’s kindness can truly echo through generations.

Additionally, I had the privilege of meeting Pete Robinson, aka ‘Eye of the Tyne Photography,’ whose remarkable 10-year project documenting the fishermen of North Shields left me in awe. His passion for capturing the heart and soul of our local fishing community is truly inspiring. And wait until you see his breathtaking photographs!

We also feature the incredible Henry Whitfield, a shining example of staying physically active throughout life. At 70-plus, Henry’s recent solo trek to the Himalayas is proof that age is no barrier to adventure. His story is a testament to perseverance, adventure, and the power of staying active in both body and spirit.

As we begin this exciting new year, we hope you continue to find inspiration in the pages of this magazine. We are grateful for your ongoing support and look forward to sharing more wonderful stories with you in the months to come. Monthly column by Bazoox aka Sean G Cleland. A brief catch up of recent games and events after some festive cheer from Christmas past.

After an upturn in form in which we had beaten Chelsea, Arsenal and Nottingham Forest on the bounce, this was followed up by a defeat at Gallowgate against West Ham United that seemingly no one saw coming.

United then contrived to concede a last gasp equaliser to Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park, in a game where in all honesty we did'nt deserve to win.

This was followed by a spirited performance against likely Champions elect Liverpool under the lights at St James' Park, that culminated in a pulsating 3-3 draw.

Our latest outing overseen a disastrous trip to Brentford's Gtech Community Stadium which ended in a 4-2 defeat. United's defending was quite frankly atrocious.

There has been no consistency and regular fluidity to Newcastle United's football so far this season.

Hope of gaining any kind of momentum has been quickly quelled and extinguished on too many occasions thus far.

We have an early chance to gain some revenge over Brentford when we entertain them in the quarter final of the Carabao Cup on December 18th. I'll be attending this game and hopefully we can win and reach a two legged semi final for the second time in three seasons.

Before that we have the now not so little matter of a Premier League encounter with lowly Leicester City at home. The pressure could surely be well and truly cranked up on Eddie Howe if results fall short of certain expectations.

I'm going to take us back down footballing memory lane to the build up to Christmas 2001, when Sir Bobby Robson's fine side were tearing it up in the Premier League.

On Tuesday 18th December 2001 United visited Highbury to take on Arsene Wenger's impressive Arsenal side, that featured the likes of Henry, Vieira and Pires.

Arsenal took an early lead, but we're penned back in the second half when Andy O'Brien deservedly equalised for the Toon.

The game was a real to and fro affair and both sides had a man sent off. Entering the final five minutes of normal time it was Newcastle who took the initiative and went ahead through an Alan Shearer penalty.

We were'nt finished there though, and in the dying embers of the match Laurent Robert broke through the Gunners ranks to stroke home a superb third goal.

Arsenal have never liked it up them so to speak, and when referee Graham Poll whistled for full time Thierry Henry whinged like a spoilt toddler who had just found out that his Christmas had been cancelled.

On Saturday 22nd December 2001 we headed to Elland Road to take on another high flying side in Leeds United.

I actually watched the game in Charlie Robson's public house on Nile Street with my father and old friends that included the late Cliffy Moses.

It was a bitterly cold day and with half an hour of the game remaining Newcastle were trailing 3-1.

Then the comeback of all Christmas comebacks began.

Robbie Elliot reduced the deficit before Alan Shearer then pulled us level from the penalty spot.

The snow then began falling at Elland Road as we entered injury time, and it was Kieron Dyer who broke from his own half before playing in Nobby Solano with a slide rule pass down the right flank.

Our little trumpet playing Peruvian maestro now had the Leeds defence dancing to his tune, and he casually dispatched his effort beyond Leeds keeper Nigel Martyn to send the Toon Army into ecstasy.

Charlie Robson's was chocka and the place was bouncing in the knowledge that Newcastle United were going to be top of the Premier League on Christmas Day. I would like to take the opportunity to wish all of our readership a very Merry Christmas 2024, and will be back in the New Year with more NUFC nostalgia and current analysis.

Elevation is gearing up for something incredible to celebrate North Shields’ 800th birthday! They’re turning key buildings into vibrant murals that capture the town’s history, quirks, and everything that makes it unique.

Imagine walking through streets bursting with creativity and colour—it’s a feast for the eyes and the soul! The journey started with The Siren, an incredible mural by @prefab77_, now proudly displayed on the gable-end wall of the former Old Hundred Public House on Albion Terrace. Bold, stylish, and full of attitude, it’s just the beginning of what’s to come.

Why It Matters This project isn’t just about beautifying the town (though it’s certainly doing that!). It’s about celebrating the people of North Shields—our history, our identity, and our future. These murals aim to bring pride, optimism, and fresh energy to the heart of the community.

Snow in North Shields

Development Tyne Brand Site

The first snow of December transformed North Shields into a winter wonderland, leaving the town looking as pretty as a picture.

The Developers said that, with further site investigation and comments from the council and the public, the scheme will be further refined before being submitted for planning.

Community

Bedford Street Revamp Underway Major improvements are starting on Bedford Street in North Shields, with completion set for mid-2025. The upgrades include smart paving, mature trees, modern seating, and an extended pedestrian zone for safer access and outdoor space.

Open Weekend

The clock tower outside the Beacon Centre will be removed to improve sightlines. Shops remain open, with new loading bays and nearby parking options available.

The annual Open Weekend of the Blyth & Tyne Model Railway Society (based above Asda on Saville Street) had visitors from age 8 to 80 entranced by the amazing layouts and models.

This project is part of North Tyneside Council’s regeneration plan, creating vibrant public spaces and boosting the local economy. Keep supporting local businesses while the work is underway!

NEW TO SHIELDS: MARTIN CAYGILL

By Jake Rusby As someone who has spent 45 years living with ADHD, Martin Caygill has never found it easy to settle down. His diagnosis eight years ago answered so many questions for him – finally he understood his struggles at school as a boy, and his difficulty focusing on tasks. It also pointed to why he had never found a place he felt happy to call home: growing up in a small mining town near Peterlee, Co Durham, where he spent the first three decades of his life, Martin’s feet always felt like they were itching. Moves to Newcastle and Durham materialised, the latter where Martin, who lives with his beautiful black cockapoo, Winston, ended up spending weeks on end isolated as lockdown after lockdown hit the UK. It was shortly after one such period of enforced isolation, in 2022, that he stumbled upon North Shields, a place that, despite only being born a half-hour’s drive away from, he’d never visited.

And as he speaks to me confidently, smiling, in his Fish Quay flat surrounded by history books and with Winston on his lap, his contentment in his choice is plain to see. He says: “During and after Covid, I just felt so disconnected. I decided to up-sticks and settle somewhere else, somewhere by the sea where I could find a sense of belonging. “When I found North Shields I knew that was where I had to be. I had visited Tynemouth and Whitley Bay but I didn’t even know the Fish Quay existed!

“There is a real sense of community in North Shields and so much going on: I can walk out of my flat and within minutes be at the beach on the Fish Quay; there are cafes, restaurants, pubs, and everyone is so friendly.

“I have always struggled to make friends – I consider myself an introvert. When I was young I could barely look at people. “As soon as I moved into my flat, just above the Fish Quay, I started wandering around meeting people: at the fish markets, in the pub, on the beach with the dog. I now have a good few people in my life I met that way, and whom I consider good friends.

“It has completely changed my life. For the first time I feel I have become part of something bigger than myself. I finally feel like I have found my home.”

LISA YOUNG Hi, I’m Lisa Young. I’ve been living in Whitley Bay since 2013 with my son, who’s now 20. For over 10 years, I’ve been working as a self-employed cleaner, looking after Airbnbs and people’s homes. Earlier this year, I came across the I Love North Shields posts on Facebook, and I immediately wanted to get involved. I was so inspired by their work ethics and their passion for bringing the community together. It all felt exciting, friendly, and important—and I just knew I had to be part of it.

I love helping others, especially when it comes to building confidence. I also believe creativity plays such a huge role in bringing people together. It’s a great way to escape, let our ideas run free, and it’s so therapeutic too.

Another reason I was drawn to the magazine is that not everyone has access to social media. The idea of creating something tangible that can reach everyone, no matter where they are, really appealed to me. Being part of I Love North Shields has been such a fun, creative, and rewarding experience. I love that the magazine lets the community know what’s happening on their doorstep while giving the creatives behind it the chance to shine. Personally, it’s been a great opportunity for me to try new things. I’ve always loved photography—scenic, macro, street, and art photography are my main interests—but working with the magazine has helped me branch out. I’ve had the chance to try journalism, portrait, and event photography, and it’s opened up so many opportunities while boosting my confidence. One of the best parts of volunteering has been meeting ambitious and talented people. Two standouts for me are Sabrina Kennedy and Marcus Reed. Sabrina’s journey was so captivating, and I absolutely love Marcus’s work and his unique style of design. I’m so proud to be part of something that brings the community together and celebrates creativity in such a meaningful way.

What inspired you to become a content creator for I Love North Shields?

I manage the ‘North Shields People’ Facebook and Instagram pages, so when I Love North Shields came along, I was curious about this new venture. Simmie and I met for coffee, and we instantly hit it off—we both share a love for living here. I was thrilled when she asked me to write for the magazine. I believe the more positive stories about North Shields, the better!

Can you tell us about your favourite place in North Shields?

Well, there’s the Fish Quay and the views along the river, of course, but I also really love Preston Village and the walk down Preston Road into town. There are beautiful old buildings throughout this area, including my local pub, The Spread Eagle, which dates back to the 1760s. The area has such a strong sense of history.

What kind of content do you most enjoy creating, and what message would you like to share with our readers?

I’m a bit of a history nerd, so I love uncovering quirky stories about North Shields, like the lady balloonist who almost came a cropper over Billy Mill (Issue 5) and the wartime kids who sold their toys to help raise money for a Spitfire (Issue 3). For such a small town, I’m constantly amazed at how many important and fascinating—and sometimes improbable—things have happened here!

What does community pride mean to you, and how do you think your work contributes to it?

There’s something so unique about North Shields. I lived away for over 40 years, and it wasn’t until I returned in 2018 that I realised how special it is. I couldn’t imagine living anywhere else now. I’m happy that I Love North Shields gives me the opportunity to express why I love living here so much!

Can you share a memorable project or piece you’ve worked on for I Love North Shields?

A real highlight for me was interviewing Gay Keenaghan, who escaped Nazi-occupied Vienna in 1939 on the Kindertransport rescue programme (Issue 7). Her story was extraordinary, and it was an absolute privilege to meet her and hear about her incredible life. That’s something I’ll always remember.

SUZANNE COULSON Hi, I’m Suzanne, a 42-year-old from Seaham now living in North Shields. I’m a teacher, mum of two, and wife to Paul, known for his distinctive, flouncy hair. My days are filled with work, family time, walks along the coast, playing sax with the Spanish City Rollers, volunteering with a local scout group, and looking forward to the weekend!

I started writing for I Love North Shields after seeing a call from Editor Simmie for local content creators. Until then, I’d written for personal catharsis. Simmie’s invitation came when I’d found a new spark in the local music scene, making it the perfect opportunity to raise awareness of what’s happening in Shields. My favourite spot is near the water, especially walking the fish quay sands towards the mouth of the Tyne. The sea calms me, so I often find myself there—and sometimes stop by the Salty Sea Dog or the Ships Cat for a pint!

I write about whatever moves me—whether it’s music, the sights I encounter, or the people and places that make up our community. The message is simple: love where we live and share the great things going on, whether music, events, or places to explore.

There's a real sense that North Shields has transformed from the ‘black sheep’ of North Tyneside to a place of pride. People are now celebrating the community spirit. Through I Love North Shields, I aim to highlight the positive happenings and celebrate the good around us.

My first piece, about local DJ Manpower, was a leap of faith, sharing my thoughts so publicly for the first time. It sparked connections and relationships, particularly through writing and music, that I hadn’t had before and its been great shining a spotlight on these aspects.

CAROLINE OSWALD What inspired you to become a content creator for I Love North Shields?

I saw a post on Instagram requesting interesting stories for a new North Shields newspaper. I wanted to write about my 89year-old dad building a boat in his attic. I met up with Simmie, Diane and Carol and was so excited by the prospect of this new publication for our town. I realised the potential for sharing so many other interesting stories for everyone in the community to enjoy.

Can you tell us about your favourite place in North Shields and why it holds a special meaning for you?

This may be true for many Shields folk, but I hold a great affinity for the Fish Quay.

Grandparents from both sides worked there and my great-grandfather was the skipper of a fishing trawler. I have happy memories of my mam singing in the Porthole pub and working above the W.M. Wight store, spending more time down in the shop chatting to locals than doing her work. It was the ideal base from which to enjoy the many excellent Fish Quay Festivals. I was delighted to discover that The Engine Room had rescued the old shop sign and incorporated it into their bar, which is located very close to where my mam and my aunties grew up.

What type of content do you enjoy creating the most, and what message do you hope to convey to our readers? I am fascinated by people. Shields has so many characters with unique tales to tell. I will never tire of hearing about the interesting lives of others. I hope that I can convey to our readers a sense that everyone in our community is important and we can always learn something from other people.

What does community pride mean to you, and how do you think your work contributes to it? It is people that make a community.

Everyone makes a distinct contribution in their own way. There are so many people doing things that are of interest to others, however big or small. Sharing this information connects

people through their common interests and goals. It is essential that people know about opportunities to participate in their community, for example providing custom to a local business, attending a club or special event or contributing to a wider community initiative.

Bringing people together in this way creates a sense of community pride, encouraging people to value and take care of each other and the place in which they live.

Can you share a memorable project or piece you’ve worked on for I Love North Shields?

I was privileged to be able to write about the late Dorothy Ann Thompson MBE, aka ‘Dot the Lollipop’. She seemed to have touched so many people’s lives, both through her work as a lollipop lady and her life in general. Having worked with children for many years myself, I appreciated her dedication to her ‘bairns’. I was moved by the outpouring of affection in the community when she died and the heartwarming tributes that flooded in. KIMBERLEY CREATIVE I work from my home office in North Shields as a graphic designer and art director, focusing mainly on printed materials like magazines and catalogues.

My days are spent in Adobe InDesign, designing layouts, creating publications, and connecting with clients—usually over Zoom, since many of them are based down South.

When I first heard about I Love North Shields at a networking event, I was immediately drawn to the idea. After meeting Simmie and learning about her vision for a community local publication, I knew I had to be part of it. It felt like the perfect way to get more involved with my community while using my creative skills.

One of my favourite spots in North Shields is the Fish Quay. Growing up in a small fishing town, being by the water always feels like home to me. I love walking my dog there; it’s so peaceful and grounding. As a designer, I’m most excited about creating visually appealing content. I love working with layouts, colours, and quotes—it’s amazing how much you can say with visuals alone. My hope is that when people flip through ILNS, they feel happy, inspired, and proud of their town.

To me, community pride is about celebrating where you’re from and supporting the people around you. Through I Love North Shields, I feel like I’m contributing to something that truly makes a difference. One of the most rewarding parts of this project has been shaping the magazine’s visual identity. From the vibrant photography to bold layouts and changing colour themes, it’s been amazing to see my ideas come to life in print. Nearly a year on, holding each issue feels like an accomplishment I’m really proud of.

MEET BAZOOX AKA SEAN G CLELAND I was born in Tynemouth Infirmary in North Shields, the first-born son of Jean and Harry Cansdale.

After serving my apprenticeship at Gregson Pipework (formerly Peter Johnson's) in South Shields and attending South Shields Marine and Technical College in the 1980s, I spent my working life in construction, specifically in the petrochemical field, working both onshore and offshore. Now in my late fifties, I enjoy spending time with my family and friends, and I especially love socializing at the Fat Ox Public Club in Whitley Bay and Tynemouth Social Club.

My connection to I Love North Shields started through my friendship with Simmie’s husband, Peter. We often meet for a pint at the Fat Ox Public House with our dogs, Little Edd and Ruby. It was through Peter that I was introduced to Simmie. I am a regular writer for The Mag, a Newcastle United online fanzine.

Simmie's passion for the I Love North Shields magazine really got me interested in contributing to I Love North Shields, and here I am today!

When it comes to my favorite spot in North Shields, it’s probably the Fish Quay. I’ve had the privilege of working on a local trawler in my fifties, which gave me a deeper connection to the area. While the pub scene in North Shields was thriving in the 1980s, I don’t have a single favorite pub anymore. However, The Terminus Club is about as good as it gets for a pint and great craic.

I specialize in Newcastle United's history and football nostalgia. North Shields has always been a United stronghold, and through my monthly column, If The Kids Are United, I aim to keep local fans engaged and informed about what’s happening at St James' Park.

My brother is the Vice Chair at North Shields FC, and I’m proud to say the club is in a much better and more stable place than it was just a year ago. That’s down to the hard work of so many people in the community who rallied together to preserve something so special and precious to them. North Shields has always deserved a football team, and while I’m not a Robins fan myself, I do my best to support them by promoting events and fundraisers through my writings about Newcastle United.

I’m thrilled to be part of I Love North Shields. The magazine has only just started, but I’m already proud to be involved with such a professionally published project. Recently, I mentioned my good, late, beloved Ma in my column. It was an emotional moment for me, but she had to be included, as she was there throughout my entire journey following Newcastle United.

ILNS VOLUNTEER PROFILE JODHI MAE RUTHERFORD Being a creative is such a big part of who I am. In 2022, I graduated from Leeds Arts University with a BA (Hons) in Fashion Branding with Communications. Before this, I studied Art & Design and Fashion & Textiles. Alongside my studies, I pursued various creative side projects and taught myself more about Photoshop. I became particularly interested in creating collages, combining mixed media design practices with the skills I had learned in Photoshop.

During my time at university, I started archiving my work and building an online portfolio. I also used my Instagram account, @pinkpalava, which I had started back in college. After graduating, opportunities in the fashion industry were hard to find. While many of my classmates moved to London to explore creative careers, I decided to stay in the North. I took up a day job in childcare and education, continuing my creative projects in the evenings—often working late into the night. (The insomnia is real!) Currently, I juggle life as a freelance creative and a professional in childcare/education. I also run creative and collage workshops and plan to launch a small business this spring.

When I discovered the I Love North Shields publication, I had only been living in the North East for nine months, having recently moved from Leeds. I was thrilled to join a local creative project, which was something I had been eager to do for a while. It gave me the chance to collaborate with fellow creatives and learn more about my new home. Having moved around a lot—from the North to the Southwest and back again—getting involved locally has been essential for me. Thanks to this project, I now truly feel at home in North Shields.

From my first meeting with Simmie, I felt valued and welcomed. She genuinely wanted to hear my design ideas and see my work. Right away, I was invited to create a design for one of the magazine’s first issues, which I thoroughly enjoyed. Though the publication is still relatively new, it already brings so much joy and community pride to North Shields and its surrounding areas. I’m especially enjoying creating collage pieces for the print issues and curating the I Love North Shields TikTok account. Although the TikTok account is just starting out, I’m excited to explore its potential in the coming year.

Being part of the ILNS team feels like being part of something truly special. It keeps my creative brain active alongside my personal projects and my less creative day job. I have notebooks full of ideas for TikTok content and collage designs for the magazine.

I’m excited to champion North Shields and its creativity while meeting more local creatives and community members.

The magazine has a profound social impact on North Shields. It highlights people’s stories and showcases creative talent, bringing together community members who might not otherwise interact.

It also helps local businesses and projects get noticed, especially through its social media presence.

The stories about local heroes and homegrown talent promote pride and positivity, while features on North Shields’ history engage older readers. With contributors from a wide age range, the magazine truly reflects the community’s diversity and inclusivity, valuing everyone’s voice.

It would be wonderful to increase the availability of physical copies for those who prefer print or are less tech-savvy. I’d also love to see a style-focused section, perhaps in collaboration with local shops, and more creative events tied to the tote bags.

Additionally, a feature where older community members share their stories, potentially in partnership with care homes, could help keep isolated individuals feeling connected.

So far, I’ve created several collage designs for the magazine and its social media channels. Running the TikTok account has been my little side project, often worked on during late-night creative sessions. As part of the ILNS team, I’m looking forward to more meetings and creative ventures in the new year.

Every moment spent on ILNS brings me joy, and I’m excited to continue contributing to this amazing project.

My favorite place in North Shields? The charity shops!

I’ve been a charity shop enthusiast since I was tiny, pushed around them in a pram by my mum. I love rummaging through treasures and giving old items a new life. I also adore The Ship’s Cat, attending gigs at Tanners Bank, and exploring the creative markets at Salt Market Social. My favorite content to create is definitely my collage pieces—I love bringing color and fun to the stories of North Shields.

SNAPSHOTS OF SHIELDS THE STORIES BEHIND THE PHOTOS

By Louise Luke I was around 11 years old when this photo was taken, with my brother Paul, my mum June, my dad Eric, and our dog Mitzy. My dad, Eric, was at work when the photo was taken at our house at 3 Epsom Close. My mum was very house proud at the time and cleaned her heart out that day. The photographer wanted to capture a natural moment, a "day in the life" of a working-class family, which we’ve always been.

My dad, Eric, worked on the fish quay from around 15 years old. He was a very hardworking, well-loved, and proud man who worked until his stroke in 2006. He lived on in poor health until he passed in 2022. My mum, June, worked as a barmaid in several pubs in Shields: the Albion Grill, The Jungle, and lastly Charlie’s Bar. In 2006, we nearly lost her to pneumonia. She survived, but in April 2017, she was diagnosed with lung cancer and sadly passed away that same month.

My brother Paul tried working on the Fish Quay, but it wasn’t for him. He went on to work on standby boats and ferries. Paul has never married, but he has one daughter, Lauren. We’ve always been close, as we were with our mum and dad, and both he and I still live in North Shields. I live with my partner Chris, and we have two children, a son, Eric, and a daughter, Lilly. My working life started as a carer in a care home. I worked away at holiday camps, and when I returned, I worked with adults with learning difficulties. After having Eric and Lilly, I became a homemaker for a few years. When my mum, who was my best friend and meant everything to me, passed suddenly, I was so grief-stricken that I needed to return to work. I’ve worked in the same care home since and still do today.

We are born and bred in North Shields. We were part of the fish quay family, and my mum’s friends from working in the local bars were a big part of our lives. We socialized in all the pubs of Shields with each other and with many of the characters of North Shields. My brother does go out, but I still love a weekly night out in the pubs of North Shields. Many of these characters I’ve shared nights out with are no longer with us, but I cherish the memories and the many photos I’ve taken with them.

Although we’ve seen many changes in the 43 years since this photo was taken, I’m still a proud North Shields girl through and through.

EXPLORING MASCULINITY

AN ODE TO GROWTH AND UNDERSTANDING Masculinity, with all its complexities, is shaped by everyday experiences. Reflecting on my journey, I see how small, seemingly trivial moments moulded my understanding of what it meant to be a man, often in ways I didn’t fully realise until much later.

As a boy, I quickly learned that certain behaviours were labelled “gay” or “feminine,” and these labels carried a negative connotation. Something as simple as crossing my legs became a source of ridicule. The word “gay” wasn’t just a descriptor; it was a slur, a punchline. Eager to fit in, I avoided anything that might be deemed “feminine” and, in turn, distanced myself from traits that I wrongly associated with weakness or otherness.

This need to assert my masculinity sometimes manifested in hurtful ways. I remember “jokingly” outing male friends before they had a chance to come out themselves. It was treated as harmless fun, a way to bond with others.

But I never stopped to think about how those jokes felt to the person on the receiving end. I was contributing to the very stigmas and stereotypes that boxed me in.

In my late teens, this discomfort extended to gay spaces. Entering a gay bar, I felt uneasy, worrying that I might be perceived as attractive by another man or face unwanted advances. This irrational fear drove me to overcompensate, morphing into a version of myself screamed, “I like women.” I never questioned why I felt so defensive; instead, I leaned into stereotypes to mask my insecurities.

The turning point came when I went to college and found myself in a creative course surrounded by people who were unapologetically themselves.

For the first time, I had open, honest conversations with gay peers. We talked about their journeys, the challenges they faced growing up, and the bullying they endured. As I listened, I began to see the world through their eyes.

The more I learned, the more I understood how my ignorance and actions had hurt others. I realised I had been “that guy”, the bully, the contributor to their pain. Had I not had these conversations, I might have held onto those harmful attitudes, letting my internalised homophobia go unchecked.

Reflecting on my adolescence, I see how these stigmas took root because of a lack of understanding. Conversations I never had led me down a path of ignorance, and only by confronting my biases head-on did I begin to grow. Who am I to judge someone without first understanding their story?

This reflection isn’t personal, it’s a call to action. We need more spaces for open, nonjudgmental dialogue. Our polarised world often creates barriers between what we’ve learned and what we could learn if we were willing to listen. Growth isn’t about perfection; it’s about being brave enough to hold a mirror to our beliefs and hear the voices that speak back.

Understanding begins with a conversation.

Whether we agree or not, those discussions can bridge the gap between ignorance and empathy.

LOCAL HERO

ROWLAND LISHMAN

By Rachel Chapman & Kris Grey Rowland Lishman is one of North Shields’ unsung heroes. Although his name is not widely known throughout the town, more than 60 years after his death his legacy lives on with local people still benefiting from his good deeds and generosity.

A life-long friend and confidante of Sir James Knott, he became a trustee of the Knott Foundation, playing a significant role in the building of Knott’s Flats and led the development of the Square Building Trust, providing much improved housing for many He was very interested in sport and set up a sports field on Preston Avenue with neighbouring allotments for local people to grow their own vegetables.

Rowland carried out many influential roles in the borough – a local JP, instrumental in the nationalisation of the coal industry and a visionary of the local YMCA – as well as becoming national vice-chair of the YMCA. He later bought Patterdale Estate near Ullswater, gifting it to the then Tynemouth YMCA to provide affordable holiday accommodation for young people from urban areas.

It is thought by his death in 1958 Rowland had donated around 90% of his income to fund improvements in the town but remained a modest man – often spotted cycling around in his trilby and overcoat!

This feature focuses on Rowland’s leadership of the Square Building Trust and his generosity in ensuring local people could enjoy the beauty of the Lake District.

It started with a brick ……. the Square Building Trust If it had happened today it would have been emblazoned on the front pages of the media and gone viral on the socials - but an amazing feat during the Great Depression in 1929 was quietly achieved by a church congregation selling shilling bricks to solve a housing crisis in North Shields.

The congregation listened to a talk by the borough’s social services chief and were so moved by the appalling conditions of some of the town’s housing that they went out and sold shilling bricks and raised an outstanding £2,400 in one week – the equivalent in today’s money of around £120,000.

And so, the Square Building Trust (SBT) was set up – under the leadership of unsung local hero Rowland Lishman, head of the men’s bible class of what was then Northumberland Square Presbyterian Church – now St Columba’s United Reformed Church.

Rowland organised the building of a number of much needed family houses off Hawkey’s Lane in the early 1930s, employing many local trades people. This was followed in 1936 by the building of the Trust’s flagship properties, 48 flats running along Howdon Road with a pioneering nursery between the blocks for the working families.

I LOVE NORTH SHIELDS VISITS PATTERDALE ESTATE

In November, I Love North Shields was invited by Cat Morton to visit the Patterdale Estate in the heart of the Lake District.

Sometimes, you just need to put your phone away, step outside, and soak in the beauty of nature. That’s exactly what we did at the Patterdale Estate, and it was everything we needed to reset. NORTH SHIELDS’ SPECIAL LINKS WITH THE LAKE DISTRICT

For more than 70 years people from North Shields have enjoyed holidays on the beautiful Patterdale Estate near Ullswater.

Few will be aware of that the 220-acre estate, with its own private lake shore at the foot of Helvellyn, was bought by Rowland Lishman in 1951 and gifted a year later to the then Tynemouth YMCA to provide affordable holiday accommodation for young people from urban areas.

In the early days, the estate included Patterdale Hall, used for activity breaks for North Shields youngsters. While the hall is now in the ownership of another organisation, the estate is open all the year round, with 15 quality self-catering lodges – four with views of Lake Ullswater – two bothies, Lishman House (a four bedroom stone cottage), and touring pitches for Caravan and Motorhome Club members, all of which can be booked online.

In addition to enjoying holidays at Patterdale Estate, there are also volunteering opportunities to help the small staff team.

Estate hospitality manager Cat Morton, who comes from North Shields and was previously the fund-raising officer for North Tyneside YMCA said: “Rowland Lishman really wanted people from his home town to benefit from the beauty of Ullswater. He loved the area and some of his family still holiday here.

“While a lot of people from North Shields come to Patterdale Estate for holidays – with some returning year after year, some for the past 40 or 50 years – this place has such special links with the town that we would like more to know about its history.”

The estate runs as a charity, with profits over and above running costs going to support the valuable work undertaken by the North Tyneside YMCA. Cat continued: “People who come here for holidays say that as soon as they arrive, they switch off and fully relax. It is a very tranquil place, surrounded by beautiful scenery. Some come to have a peaceful break, others to enjoy more adventurous outdoor pursuits.”

During December, a group from North Shields spent a weekend volunteering at Patterdale Estate, helping to put up Christmas decorations.

“We have such a small staff team that we welcome support from volunteers who play a valuable role, especially with maintaining such extensive grounds,” she said.

A NEW BEGINNING FOR SOUTH SHIELDS PIER LIGHTHOUSE When structural engineer Rob Ratcliffe moved from Scotland to North Shields in 2022, he could not have imagined that he would be faced with the onerous task of reconstructing South Shields Lighthouse. The historic landmark of the Tyne was an unfortunate casualty of the combination of high winds, high tide and substantial swell during Storm Babet in October 2023. Rob shared with us an insight into the effects of the storm and the complicated process of repairing the damage.

South Shields Lighthouse was one of the finishing touches to the 1855-1907 construction of the North and South Piers, which guide and shelter the many boats that enter the mouth of the River Tyne. This original process consumed the full career of an initially fresh-faced and enthusiastic site manager, involving the collapse and reconstruction of a section of the North Pier and the patent design of a concrete mixer.

The construction of both lighthouses was comparatively straightforward. The South was short and stout in stature, its arcing limestone walls capped with granite and its upper structure featuring a copper-clad, cast-iron body with glazed windows to allow its Fresnel lens to send out light to incoming boats. The entire structure was pinned down onto the walls with concealed rods and visible wrought-iron guys around its perimeter.

With a structure and roof of inherently strong shape, aerodynamic to cope with the severe weather conditions, the lighthouse had weathered many a storm. However, over the course of three days, Storm Babet bombarded the mouth of the Tyne with easterly wind speed gusts up to 70 knots and an average wind speed of 57 knots.

Wave heights were recorded up to 9 metres with a constant wave action of 7 metres.

These relentless forces caused a large extent of damage. From the initial assessment of the lighthouse, a substantial portion of its structure remained in place and in satisfactory condition, its limestone walls sound and its cast-iron dwarf walls and balusters intact. The clear and obvious issues, to name a few, related to the missing domed roof, corrosion to its metalwork and the loss of the majority of its curved window panes. Interestingly, one window, complete with a bullet-hole wound, still remained to the west side.

With several parts of the lighthouse lost, in the case of the domed roof we literally had no starting point when it came to planning its replacement. The South Shields architect therefore set upon the careful task of filling in the information gap to piece the missing parts of the jigsaw together. This involved the inspection of similar lighthouses to understand their construction form in consultation with Trinity House, delving into the Tyne and Wear archives, as well as undertaking a measured survey of the structure that remained. As a result of these efforts, we gained a good understanding of how the domed roof was formed. Also, with the fortune of parts washing up and being recovered during the design process, we were well on our way to an effective design.

Your Stories Through close collaboration between the architect, metalwork specialist, Port of Tyne and myself, we established the principles of repair and conservation, i.e. to replace and repair in a like-for-like manner. However, where we could make small tweaks and improvements, we would do so. Therefore, the new castings that we formed to create the rib cage structure were made from ductile cast iron, which is very effective in both compression and tension. It was fortunate that we could now benefit from this material which was invented after the construction of the lighthouse, and it could also be cast to take the same form as the original ribs. I looked at the various sizes and connections of components that made up the domed roof, ensuring that these could all cope with the forces of the increasingly intense storms that are likely in the future due to climate change. The South Shields Lighthouse is however a very strong rigid shape and what was designed is perfectly capable of withstanding the forces thrown at it by the elements in this exposed position.

The construction of the upper portion of the lighthouse took place in the metalwork specialist’s workshop. This allowed for a controlled environment and for the entire structure to be put together as a ‘dry fit‘. The original mullions which sit between the curved glass panels were reusable, therefore they were simply cleaned and repainted with the other castings bolt fixed onto these to create a framework. The 2mm thick copper cladding was altogether a trickier element. This was formed in cold rolled copper, which is inherently a very rigid material, and it needed to be rolled in two axes with an English roller to create the right curvature of the dome. To cap the domed roof, a new ventilator drum was formed in copper, complete with a light steel stiffening frame and finally a new weather vane.

With the upper section of the lighthouse essentially constructed and put together in the workshop, it just had to be transported to the Southern pier and then lifted into place. This was not as simple as it sounds, as the mullion legs of the assembled frame had to fit into their slots within the lighthouse's dwarf wall, so there was very little margin for error. To make sure nothing moved whilst the frame was in transit, the metalworkers created a steel framework which braced it together, also using the eye bolts for the guys to strap it down.

Fortunately, it arrived safely at the northern tip of the Southern Pier on the 3rd of October 2024, on a clear day with just a touch of a breeze. Conditions were perfect and the crane made minimal fuss in hoisting the structure into position. With a small number of adjustments and a bit of manpower, the mullion legs slotted back into their rightful position and the operation was declared a success.

In the time following the day of the lift, glazing and stainless steel were installed and the metal elements have been cleaned and redecorated to cope with the marine environment. It was a pleasure to have played a part in the repair and restoration of the Grade II listed South Pier Lighthouse, a unique experience I will never forget as I look out over the mouth of the Tyne from my new home town of North Shields.

Rob will face a new kind of challenge in the coming year after the arrival of his first baby at Christmas. We wish him and his wife Lin all the best for their new beginning by the sea!

FROM THE ROOFS OF NORTH SHIELDS TO THE ROOF OF THE WORLD: HENRY WHITFIELD

By Caroline Oswald Henry Whitfield is a fine example of what can be achieved if you remain physically active all your life. The North Shields roofer, now in his late seventies, has just returned from a solo trip to the Himalayas in India. Having repaired the roofs of North Shields residents for the past 44 years, Henry is not averse to heights. When not up a ladder, he can be found hiking up hills and mountains in this country and abroad.

Henry made his first connection with India as a student when he befriended a man from Assam who was a cook for the P&O shipping company. It was perhaps working through the holidays in Fort William in Scotland for the British Aluminium Company that sparked Henry’s appreciation for the beauty of mountainous regions. After graduating, he ventured further afield to India, volunteering to work in Kerala through the VSO charity as a teacher in a very special type of school.

When India gained independence in 1947, V. K. Krishna Menon became Ambassador for India in London. When he later became Minister for Defence in the Indian Parliament, he created a public education system called ‘Sainik’ schools, to rectify the regional and class imbalance amongst the officer cadre of the Indian military. The school in Kerala had humble beginnings with just over 100 students in a disused military base, but then moved to Kazhakkoottam near Trivandrum (now Thiruvananthapuram). It had become one of the best Sainik schools in the country by the time Henry arrived in September 1967. He recalls: “We were given a brief introduction by the British Council in Madras (now Chennai), and a crash course in how to behave nicely in India. We were then put on a train to our schools. It was a bit of a culture shock but the people were very friendly.”

Featured Henry taught chemistry in the school for two years, during which time he formed a special bond with one particular colleague, Mr Panda. Although 20 years his senior, he was a fellow outsider all the way from Uttarakhand, Almora. Henry made other friends too, immersing himself in the school community and even winning the staff doubles table tennis tournament!

Henry led his pupils on several trips around the local area, but he had set his sights higher than that. The Agastya Mudi (now Agastya Mala) mountain was visible from the school. Henry held a competition to be among the twelve boys to accompany him on a trip to climb the mountain.

The group endured a challenging trek before having to stay overnight in a cave, with leeches sucking their blood!

The following day, within striking distance of the cave, Henry observed that rather than the ‘elite’ rank holders among the group, such as the house captains, it was the ordinary, more unassuming boys that were keen to continue, whilst the others waited by the cave. This provided a lasting lesson for Henry and ignited his lifelong passion for mountaineering and the country of India.

After leaving India, Henry worked in Cumbria as a technical supervisor. He lived in a blue caravan behind a petrol station, but that didn’t matter as once again he was surrounded by beautiful mountains! He returned to North Shields and worked at Welwyn Electric in Bedlington.

After eight years he got a job in Kielder helping to build the new dam. The local vicar in Bellingham offered him bed and breakfast and he commuted to Kielder on his Honda 50 motorcycle.

Upon his return to Shields, Henry helped friends with house repairs and his breakthrough into roofing came when he met a couple who worked in the town’s Oxfam shop. They needed his help to renovate a dilapidated farmhouse near Rothbury. It was here that he learned the basics of roofing and the rest is history: “It’s not rocket science. You just need ladders, equipment, a good head for heights, a car and a desire to solve customers’ problems”, he states modestly.

Henry’s regular roofing work has funded several trips back to India over the years. He has trekked through the Himalayas, in Nepal, explored caves in Meghalaya, and enjoyed the sights of Sikkim and Arunachal Pradesh. The first mountain that he climbed in the Himalayas was Kanamo Peak, in Spiti, close to the border with Tibet. He befriended a fellow climber from Austria and together they also tackled a more difficult, unnamed mountain of over 6000 metres.

In September he achieved his dream of returning to Spiti and Kanamo once again during a fiveweek long solo trip. He stayed with Pradeep, the son of Balakrishnan Nair, who was his colleague in the chemistry department in Kerala, and his wife Sreerekha. The Nairs were the fighting folk of that area, much like the Border Reivers here. In the summer the Nairs had enjoyed a lovely visit to North Shields and the surrounding area. They were delighted when Henry arrived in India with a copy of ‘I Love North Shields’ for them!

Back home, Henry is part of a North Tyneside’s Phoenix Walking Club, and he cannot emphasise enough the effect that hiking outdoors can have on your physical and mental health: “If you have stamina, good companions, good visibility and a gentle wind, it’s an absolute pleasure.”

PETE ROBINSON THE ‘EYE OF THE TYNE’

By Diane Wailes Visiting Pete Robinson - AKA ‘Eye of the Tyne Photography’ - in his office in the North Tyneside Business Centre on Saville Street, was a revelation. Not because of his multiaward-winning wedding photography (more about that later) but because of Pete’s passion project, capturing on camera the heart and soul of the North Shields fishing industry.

North Shields is changing, and changing fast.

The fishing industry is under pressure and Pete knows that some of the people and activities he’s able to photograph today may not be around in ten or twenty years time. So he’s a man on a mission - to record the working and the home lives of our local fishermen; people who are engaged in one of the UK’s most dangerous industries.

Like all the best documentary photographers, Pete has taken time to get to know the people he photographs, going out with them on fishing trips for ten hours or more, with painfully early starts, rough seas and seasickness to contend with, in the search for pictures that capture the harsh realities and camaraderie of life at sea. Photographs that are so evocative you can almost feel the cold, and smell the heady mix of fish, prawns, diesel and cigarette smoke.

Pete remembers that in the early days some of the fishermen were a little reluctant to be photographed; one of them asked him if he’d been sent to take photos by the Dole Office!

But the hundreds of pictures he’s taken since then show the extent to which he’s been accepted by the people he photographs, and also the respect he has for this difficult and dangerous occupation.

Featured Some of Pete’s most poignant photographs were taken onshore: a retired fisherman at home, surrounded by memories of his life at sea; a sign-writer meticulously painting the name on the side of a fishing boat, in exactly the same way the job would have been done a hundred years ago. Taken in both colour and black and white, they’re all high quality images that tell an important story about our town.

Pete told me that his route into photography wasn’t a traditional one. After studying art at college in Co. Durham, where he picked up a camera for the very first time, he joined the RAF and began his training at The Defence School of Photography. When 9/11 happened he was posted to Oman as part of the Army’s Media Operations Group, documenting military operations in the Gulf. Some of his photographs made it onto the front page of national newspapers.

After five years, he returned to civilian life and for a while photography was just a hobby that is until friends asked him to photograph their wedding, and he was bitten by the photography bug again. With a young family he took what then felt like a big step of setting up ‘Eye of the Tyne’ as a full-time wedding photographer, based in North Shields. But it’s a decision he clearly doesn’t regret.

The majority of his work is in the north east, but photos on his office wall also reveal wedding assignments in far flung, exotic places, including New York, Iceland and Brazil.

Pete’s work as a wedding photographer has earned him numerous awards. The one he’s most proud of is the prestigious Junebug Annual Award for the Top 50 Wedding Photos in the World, which he’s won an astonishing three times. The fact that all three of the prize-winning photographs were taken in the north east was the icing on the cake!

I asked Pete, what comes next? With the postChristmas lull in weddings on the horizon, he’s keen to revisit the thousands of photographs he’s taken over the past ten years as part of his ‘fishermen’s project’. His aim is to produce a book and hold an exhibition locally, with proceeds going to the Fishermen’s Mission - a charity that’s dear to his heart. As well as showcasing the photographs to a wider audience, it would also be a great opportunity to tell the fishermen’s stories as part of North Shields’ 800 celebrations.

And away from the camera, there’s plenty to keep Pete busy, with a young son and daughter, and his passion for football Newcastle, of course, and also coaching his son’s football team, North Shields Juniors. It’s a busy life and he says he wouldn’t be able to do the job he does, and everything else, without the support of his wife, Sarah.

In his office overlooking the new Globe Gallery and looking across to The Exchange, I asked Pete what he makes of North Shields now. “I’m really proud to be part of the town” was his reply. “North Shields is definitely on the up!”

CHRISTOPHER PAUL COOK As a visual designer it is exciting delving into the endearing subject matters. The range is huge as it all depends on the client or cause. One minute you could be creating a piece based around a local landmark like the Tyne Bridge in Newcastle city centre or St Mary's Lighthouse along the coast, to encapsulate a life's story of a person's family member by means of a personal gift. I love to research and discover the barely told or forgotten parts of our local history. Though getting more recognition now, I was blown away by how Thomas Brown's courage in gaining the Enigma codes so that Britain could decode Germany's secrets during the war was only told to me when in my thirties. He is a massive reason behind our victory and of it he was born in North Shields. That is a topic that has inspired me for one of my poems and could be anytime for a visual. Other figures not always given enough credit such as the Fish Quay Fisherman or Fishermen wives of Cullercoats I find almost honourable to depict as I feel I could be playing a small role in having them get introduced to a new generation.

I was born and have always lived in North Shields, so the place is a chalice for the majority of my childhood memories and avenues in life growing up. Such as times in school and the hangout spots I had as a student with classmates. Cullercoats beach near where my grandparents live where great pastimes of picnics and sandcastles on the beach with them and my sister always cross my mind. There is our beautiful coastline of Priory Castle, Cullercoats clocktower and again St Mary's Lighthouse much visited with family, walks along Tynemouth longsands or King Edwards Bay with friends and of course North Shields quayside and the Royal Quays. These often feature in my work not only for being overly worthy but because they are sentimental to me as in pride and belonging. It is where I am making new memories with my two nieces. I have seen the good and bad of North Shields, such as how due to the economy, nearly all of the central businesses and livelihoods have faced closure to leave premises empty or boarded up. It's sad and makes our town like a ghost town. But from that I am really excited by how the cultural side in recent years has emerged. This could be through local musicians and performing acts finally getting a chance to be heard in all the old and new micro hotspot bars, cafes and hubs. Poetry and spoken word is growing through nights which bring residents closer together like nights presented by my friend Dean Jolly. The sources of inspiration to me have been delving into the deeper, more sentimental and often unnoticed side of where we live. If you are creating a scene from the Spanish City to the castles of Northumberland, I want to present humanity. So, I find it a responsibility to tell illustrated stories of a mother and child building sandcastles, elders sitting on a park bench reminiscing a lifetime together over an ice cream to the more unfortunate of the homeless and lost. Sad but the truth that deserves to be represented. But when getting a commission to expose an essence of the personality of a local musician or band, local author or independant business, that is when I get really excited. I have been honoured to have been asked to produce and be part of calendar issues alongside great local artists for 'For the Love of the North', and workings for 'Fisherman's Bay' in Whitley Bay, 'Longsands Apres' in North Shields. More recently the cover for one of the singles by my friend Shellie Critchlow's band 'Snake's with Tit's'.

What kind of projects or collaborations are you currently looking for, and how can people support your work? I am open to absolutely anything. As long as those who see my work, like the style and would like for me to represent them, that grateful interest there is enough for me to want to work with them.

Do you offer design services to the public, and how can people get in touch with you to discuss a potential project? Yes, I am always available for either individuals who may want a personal piece produced for themselves or for a gift, businesses who want to have an illustration made telling of their brainchild or productions which would like help with promotional/ visual material.

CREATIVES OF NORTH SHIELDS

By Cathy Davies I’m a Shields lass and, as a child, I remember North Shields being a vibrant town with department stores and a huge variety of shops. My Saturdays began with a walk to the fish quay with my Grandad to watch the fishermen selling freshly caught fish from boxes filled with ice. Then it was back into town to get fruit & veg at the stall next to Woollies, and a bag of ‘pick and mix’.

On the way home, Grandad would point out the house where Stan Laurel once lived and he’d reminisce about the fields between North Shields and Percy Main and how he would trudge through them to see my Grandma, when he was courting her. Once home at their upstairs flat it would be ham and pease pudding sandwiches with lashings of butter, and wrestling on the telly.

These are my memories of how things used to be. I know that in the new world of online shopping and fast food, town centres have changed. But I hope we can still keep a sense of community. When I was a councillor, I heard people complain about North Shields; how it looked run down, with shops closing and a lack of things to do. With these comments in mind, I got together with Father Chris of St Cuthbert's Church, and we set about trying to find out what people thought of North Shields and their suggestions to improve things.

We held a meeting in October 2023 in St Cuthbert’s church hall and around 35 people came along with their concerns and ideas. One of the themes that emerged was arts & culture. A North Shields Creatives Group was formed to explore this subject, meeting first in Pigalo’s then, as numbers grew, moving to monthly meetings in ‘The Klurb’ on Cecil Street.

We decided to focus on the North Shields 800 celebrations planned for 2025.

The Creatives have became a strong community group. We have a place at the table on the North Tyneside NS800 committee and we’ve successfully supported a number of projects in their bids for official funding.

The recent Creatives Christmas Market in the Saltmarket Social - with free mince pies and carol singing from the Mariners and Marras - is testament to what can be achieved when people work together to help their community.

I’ve really enjoyed the journey from the small beginnings in the church hall. There is a lot to be positive about and I’ve met some fabulous people on the way. The current focus is on North Shields 800, but we need an ongoing push to get North Shields back on the map as a go-to place.

I wrote a piece in December’s issue about a project I’m working on called 100 Days of Little Stories. As part of the project I made a little booklet by collaging words and pictures from a vintage ladybird book of some of my favourite things one of my nephews said when he was young. I’d saved these gems for years, knowing there was something special about these quotes that captured his off-the-wall mind, great sense of humour and his unique take on life.

I had a few other quotes and overheard moments of childish chatter I’d saved in my notepad from years of being an auntie to a quirky crew of nieces and nephews. One I often think of now I live up in North Shields is when my nephew, whilst talking to his mum, became distracted - his mum asked him what was going on and he regained focus and said “oh, nothing, I just thought I saw a mackem in the back yard”. This wasn’t long after the time that he asked his mum “soooo... when did you first get into salt?”. I found notes on his older brother too - a snippet of conversation between him and his dad that went simply: Dad: “Don’t put that in the shredder please.”

Nephew: “Why?” Dad, exasperated: Because it’s a biscuit”. I overheard a very charming and wholesome conversation between two 5 year olds in my family recently - my niece asked her cousin if it was the first time he would have been to her house. When he said yes, it’s the first time, she told him “We’ve got lots of cool stuff. We’ve got a bouncy ball. A rainbow one.” I loved hearing the genuine pride she had in her rainbow bouncy ball and it made me feel like on some level, all is ok with the world. I asked some friends for their best kid quotes in preparation for writing this piece.

I got some excellent responses. A few good, thought-provoking questions such as “why is it never summer in space?”, “do you ever get bird traffic jams?”, and “is Holland and Barrett a country?” to get the mind awhirring. One friend, Jen, told of an unusual and memorable conversation she had with her 4 year old son, Bo, about the weather, that went something like... Jen: “it is hot today” Bo “as hot as a boomerang” Jen: “er... I don’t think boomerangs are that hot Bo. What about as hot as lava? Bo: “no because we would get burnt” Jen “oh ok, what about as hot as a pool of hot chocolate?” Bo: you don’t get pools of hot chocolate. Because you would just drink it” Jen: “ok. As hot as the sun?” Bo: “but the sun is making it hot “Jen: “yes...” Later that day they cleaned Bo’s scooter, and Bo began “this is as clean as a boomerang”.

One friend’s daughter came out with some really poignant, and painfully relatable comments when she was 3-4 years old. One was “Oh I’m really so tired because tomorrow’s a busy day” - a feeling a lot of adults will be familiar with I expect. This friend also told me about a day that her daughter was feeling unwell - she was comforting her daughter and noticed that she was talking differently. She asked her “why are you talking in that voice?” Her daughter replied “because I still got my baby self inside” In sharing this story my friend expressed that her daughter’s response was so simple but that it perfectly described something she feels herself when she’s unwell, or feeling down, and can’t speak to her mum anymore. I found it touching that perhaps without intending to, this little one had helped her mother understand more about her own experience of life.

A couple more to end on that I enjoyed... Jen, this time with her daughter, Evelyn, age 6, was discussing the word ‘unusual’... Jen: “Evie, do you know what the word unusual means? Evie: “Like strange” Jen: “yes, that’s right” Evie: And strange would be like if you had one massive eyebrow and one tiny one”.

Incredible and unforgettable imagery there from Evelyn. One more from Bo, before we go “I hurt my toe, and it was my favourite one!”

Poor kid. Great that he values his toes though. We could learn a lot from these young’uns!

LOCAL AUTHOR SHIELDS SHERLOCK B BASKERVILLE

Have you ever walked the streets of North Shields and thought this would be a great place to dump a body? No? Well, local crime writer, B Baskerville, certainly has. Many of Baskerville’s thrillers are set right here in the Northeast, bringing local lingo and legends to life on her pages. Her latest novel in the popular DCI Cooper series, The Bridge, was released on December 1st.

How many books have you written so far?

Ten. I have two stand-alone novels: The Only Weapon In The Room, which is set here in North Shields, and Dead In The Water, which takes place on a yacht in the Ionian Sea. My DCI Erica Cooper series is now eight books long and begins with Cut The Deck which opens at King Edwards Bay in Tynemouth.

Tell us more about DCI Erica Cooper.

When we meet Cooper at the beginning of Cut The Deck, she’s a single mum returning to work after completing treatment for breast cancer and is immediately thrown into a serial killer investigation. She’s feeling run down and insecure, but she’s also a clever and determined lady, and as the series progresses we see her grow in confidence.

Which local landmarks will people recognise in your novels?

Lots! Low Lights - both the pub and the beach - feature in The Only Weapon In The Room, as does the Fish Quay and Preston Cemetery.

The DCI Cooper series begins with a scene at King Edwards Bay and includes numerous local places such as Northumberland Park.

Further afield, my characters travel throughout Newcastle and Sunderland and venture to Northumberland’s Kielder and Holy Island.

What are you working on at the moment?

The latest book in the DCI Cooper series, The Bridge, was released on December 1st, so I’m taking a few weeks off before I begin plotting both the ninth Cooper book and a new international series which should kick off in Gibraltar.

It’s truly wonderful to see how the library continues to serve the community, providing such an important service, and I hope it will continue to do so for many years to come. We are all so grateful for everything the library offers to our community. Alongside reading, we provide creative and social activities that help connect individuals and combat loneliness while improving wellbeing. We offer books in print, online, and audiobooks. We also promote reading for pleasure from a very young age, such as gifting books to babies through Bookstart, hosting rhyme times for parents and small children, and running the Summer Reading Challenge to keep kids reading during the holidays. The Northern Children’s Book Festival lets children meet authors and illustrators. We also offer a variety of events, from local history talks and summer fayres to Christmas parties, performances, and writing groups.

Additionally, we offer free access to PCs, the internet, and Wi-Fi, as well as support for getting online. Our Reading Well collections provide books to support mental health, dementia, and long-term health conditions. In North Shields and Wallsend Libraries, you can even check your blood pressure!

Libraries serve as the ‘face’ of the council, helping residents access vital services, including housing and benefits advice.

BEWARE THE NORTH SHIELDS GHOST!

A rather strange article appeared in ‘The Port of Tyne Pilot’ newspaper in July 1840, tucked away between the shipping news and the births, deaths & marriages. The story of a ghost that had the whole of North Shields talking!

The paper described the ghost as 'a boneless being' who haunted a mansion house close to North Shields. They remarked that, “there is no wonder that the arrival of a ghost in this neighbourhood, in the second quarter of the 19th century of the Christian era, should excite extraordinary wonder”. According to the report, “old women (of both sexes)” were quick to believe in the ghost, while the better informed were more sceptical.

The owner of the house and his family were terrified by the ghostly goingson: locked doors found open in the morning; strange noises coming from empty rooms; even “fire-irons seen dancing with themselves”!

Two local lads decided it was time to get to the bottom of the mystery and announced that they would like to “keep the night therein, in order that they might see and hear all the wonders of the Great Unknown”. And so, one Friday evening, they prepared for an all-night vigil in the haunted house, determined to catch sight of the ghost. The newspaper reports that one of them quickly fell into a deep sleep, leaving his friend alone, keeping watch.

For what happened next, it’s best to go directly to the newspaper report (with apologies for the casual sexism!): “ …. The other says he kept awake, bold as a lion, and sharp-sighted as an eagle, till a little before the clock struck one when, as he was looking at his watch, lo, and behold! a closet opened and out came a form in the shape of a woman without eyes, enfolded in a long flowing white garment, her right hand laid on her breast, and her left, slightly extended, pointing downwards!

This vision put our hero into an ‘eerie swither’, and he cried out, like an hysterical lady, for help. His companion awoke, but the vision had gone; the inmates of the house were alarmed, and the young hero was found in an awful state of trepidation, trembling like an aspen leaf, and as pale as death.”

The paper went on to say that the unexpected visitor “set with fright the hairs on the young man’s head like quills upon the fretful porcupine”.

What happened next the paper doesn’t say. It’s unlikely that the mansion wherever it was - still exists, but as for the eyeless woman … well, keep your wits about you when you’re out and about in North Shields late at night. You never know what you might come across!

COASTFEST: A FUNDRAISER FOR LOCAL MUSIC

Text & Photography by Wayne CoastFest brought a night of incredible talent to the Fish Quay’s Salt Market Social, showcasing the best of the local music scene. Rapidly becoming a cornerstone for live music in the area, the venue provided the perfect stage for this celebration of North East creativity and community spirit.

More than just an annual North Shields event, CoastFest is a year-round series of mini-festivals and gigs. These gatherings spotlight emerging bands and performers while delivering consistently high-quality, engaging entertainment. The Salt Market Social, with its industrial warehouse exterior, surprises everyone who steps inside with its warm and inviting atmosphere.

The evening began with Oliver Thomas Armstrong, a last-minute stand-in for the billed Healy. His dynamic blend of heavy folk-pop, characterized by uplifting lyrics and a North East flavor, captivated the audience. With his heartfelt words and commanding stage presence, Olly is quickly becoming a fixture in the local music scene.

Next to take the stage were Pretty Velvet, a Sunderland-based band delivering a lively mix of bluesy rock and funk. Their wide-ranging influences made their sound intriguing and hard to define, but the result was an infectious, danceable energy driven by a powerful vocalist.

The crowd's excitement reached new heights when Craig Redpath took the stage.

With his Brit-pop indie rock sound, Craig brought an electrifying performance that had the audience hooked. Armed with a Rickenbacker semi-acoustic guitar, his sharp lyrics and Oasis-inspired yet distinctly original tunes solidified his reputation as a standout artist.

Headlining the night was the phenomenal Deaf Fiction, led by Michael Curran.

While their name was taped to the kick drum with black electrical tape, their performance was anything but makeshift. Backed by a rotating lineup of exceptional musicians, Deaf Fiction transformed Curran’s solo productions into a polished, wildly eclectic live experience. Their genre-defying music was brimming with hooks, opinions, and energy, making for an unforgettable set.

Deaf Fiction’s ethos of community and togetherness resonated deeply with the audience and the setting. The Salt Market Social, like the event, embodies transformation—a stark, industrial shell that houses a vibrant, welcoming interior where strangers connect over shared moments. CoastFest once again proved that live music in North Shields is alive, thriving, and uniting people in the best possible way.

GETTING INKED BLIND TIGER STYLE

By Diane Wailes They say you should try everything once, which is how I found myself at Blind Tiger Tattoo Studio one chilly Sunday morning, ready to “get inked.”

Blind Tiger is impossible to miss on Howard Street, with its striking gold and pink tigers adorning the front windows—a bold contrast to the surrounding grey buildings. The sign on the door reads: “Shop Rules: No minors, drunks, dickheads, cry babies. Proudly women-owned.”

The “no cry babies” rule gave me pause, but as a 65-year-old, it felt like a case of now or never.

Originally based in central Newcastle’s Carliol Square, Blind Tiger relocated to North Shields in June. The studio is owned by Gabriela Lastra, an acclaimed tattoo artist and proud North Shields resident, who shares the space with five other talented tattooists.

After exploring their styles online, I chose Hana Wolhf to create my tattoo. My design idea was clear: a snake inspired by my son’s python, Goosebumps. Hana’s delicate shading and intricate animal designs won me over.

While Hana worked, we chatted about her background, and I was fascinated to learn she has a degree in fine art and balances tattooing with her role as a rehabilitation therapist on the stroke ward at the RVI. It’s an impressive mix of creativity and care. Hana also shared how much she enjoys being part of North Shields’ vibrant community, despite her now longer commute.

As for the tattooing itself? Surprisingly, it wasn’t as painful as I’d imagined, and Hana’s warm conversation made the experience fly by. The result? A stunningly detailed snake tattoo that’s everything I’d hoped for.

THE ENIGMA OF JETT

They say cats are good for your well-being, reducing stress and even lowering your blood pressure. This is certainly true for customers of the ’Enigma Tap’ micropub on Bedford Street, where Jett has been the resident cat for over five years. Also known for frequenting other businesses in North Shields, such as nearby shops and care homes, the cool, black cat has become something of a celebrity among the town’s locals, with a variety of beers named after him and new T-shirts featuring the bar’s furry friend. However, it is debatable whether Jett has brought the same positive health benefits to his owner, Luke, who also owns the Enigma Tap. The Enigma Tap, named in honour of North Shields hero Thomas Brown, who retrieved the Enigma Codes that helped end the Second World War, opened in 2019. Jett began visiting almost straight away. Luke explains: “He came in via the back door one day. He didn’t have a collar so we put a message out to find out where he belonged. We soon found out he was already well known about town.” Luke knew that Jett’s owners, who lived near Kiki’s cabin, were aware of his adventures around Shields. Therefore it did not come as much of a surprise when Jett quickly became a regular of the latest venue in town.

Jett continued to visit throughout the lockdown in 2020, keeping the same routine of sleeping in the bar during the day and then being put out at night to go back to his house when Luke locked up. But he wouldn’t always automatically go back home, and in Autumn of that year, Jett went missing for several days. After he turned up, Jett’s owners offered to give Luke full responsibility for the wayward cat, as they knew he was visiting the pub on a daily basis. At first, Luke stuck to Jett’s normal routine as a street cat, letting him sleep in the pub and putting him out at night as he was used to. Then one night he was injured in a fight and had to be put on antibiotics and not allowed out. Luke and his wife, Abbie, had to take him to their home on ‘Scotch Estate’ in North Shields, so called due to all the street names being named after places in Scotland. A few days later came the second lockdown, so Jett was stuck in with everyone else - he did not take kindly to the new restrictions and managed to escape out of the kitchen window! The area was new to him and Luke and Abbie spent two hours looking for him until he finally returned. Jett became familiar with his new neighbourhood but he never dared roam as far as he did in the town centre: “We walked him to the edge of the estate once but he just kept whinging to turn back!”

When the pubs reopened, Jett began leading a double life. When not wandering his estate as a normal domestic cat, Luke would transport him to the Enigma Tap, where he could come and go as he pleased around town. He would usually make it back to the pub by last orders to be popped into his backpack carrier to be taken home. But sometimes Jett wouldn’t make it back in time, preferring to stay out in Shields. Luke would have to keep checking the CCTV to see when he returned to the pub, coming back out in the early hours of the morning to collect him!

One day Jett was run over, ironically on his quiet estate and not on the busy streets of Shields.

Under strict cage rest to recover from his broken leg, he did not like this one bit, and Luke even tried bringing his cage to the Enigma Tap to cheer him up! When fully recovered, Jett was up to his old tricks again, sometimes preferring to stay out all night, especially in the summer months. This continued for a couple of years, until Luke and Abbie decided to move house. At first they tried to keep Jett in while living in a temporary home before their new house was ready. Jett showed his discontent by ripping off the letterbox from the inside before managing to escape! They had to relent to letting him out sometimes and just trusting in his innate sense of direction. In June of this year, Luke and Abbie finally moved to the Fish Quay. They kept Jett in initially and then started walking him around on a lead to get him used to the area. They only ever walked him as far as Saville Street and not into the town centre. To their astonishment, the first day they let him out of his own accord, he turned up at the Enigma Tap 45 minutes later! Jett now wears a tag on his collar that is connected to Luke’s phone. It has given fascinating insights into the adventurous cat’s day. He has a specific route that he always takes from the Fish Quay to the Enigma Tap: past Bedford Court, bypassing Bedford Street (he’s never been seen there), along Union Street, past the Maggie Bank and the Exchange, up Howard Street and through Northumberland Square, obviously favouring the Cultural Quarter! Jett’s tag also reveals that he likes to roam as far as Spring Terrace, Frank Place, Alma Place, Norfolk Court and where he used to live near Kielder Terrace. As I was talking to Luke in the Enigma Tap, he took a moment to check Jett’s whereabouts, exclaiming, “Oh, he’s here!”

While we were discussing Jett, an employee from a local brewery came to collect an empty barrel. Having never been to the bar before, he stated: “Well, this is VERY nice!” He’s not wrong. As well as its friendly resident cat, the Enigma Tap has much more to offer. The small, welcoming bar has a calm but social atmosphere. A range of local cask and keg beers are available to either sample at the bar or take away. These are always changing, providing interest and variety as well as ensuring support for several local breweries.

One recent development may interest those wanting a healthier start to 2025. There is now a permanent low-alcohol beer on keg, always

below 0.5%, and this too is regularly changed so that non-drinkers can experience a variety of tastes. Dogs are also welcome, which does not bother Jett in the slightest, who continues to mingle among the punters, have a snack or a nap in one of his comfy spots.

As well as petting Jett, having a chat or playing a board game with the welcoming locals, you may like to participate in other activities such as the ‘Mariners and Marras’ folk singing group, who rehearse at the pub on the second Monday of every month.

Spectators and new members are always welcome, as well as those wanting to join in for a one-off singalong. Wednesday night is quiz night at the Enigma, with free cheese platters provided. Booking is recommended.

On the day I met him, Luke explained there was a special charity quiz that night to raise money for The Bay Food Bank. He also raises money for this charity by donating 10p a pint to their cause. He has held charity quizzes in the past to raise money for Live Well With Cancer and would like to continue to run more such events in the future. More plans for the coming months include a full refurbishment of the interior as well as improvements to the back beer garden, similar to the lovely new outdoor seating area at the front.

Cats do not tend to like this sort of thing, so maybe Jett will find refuge during this time at one of his other regular haunts, such as AK Blinds on Nile Street, where he has claimed his own seat, or North Shields Quality Butchers on West Percy Street, where he was recently photographed sitting in the window. Last August, Jett began finding his own way all the way from the Enigma Tap to his home on the Fish Quay, without the need to be bundled into his carrier at closing time. Perhaps the wanderer is finally settling down now that he has found his own new beginning by the sea.

How do local songwriters explore the modern city of Newcastle? Hosted by Groundbird - the songwriting pseudonym of Northumbria University academic Richard O'Brien - this is the first in a series of events where some of the North East's top musicians will be in conversation, discussing how they think about the songs they write.

This event features Nev Clay and Novyi Lef both artists whose work is heavily informed by 20th and 21st century urban space. The show is free, with each act playing about 30 minutes each, followed by an onstage Q&A discussion.
