The Customer Reactivation Readiness Checklist Ten checks before you email your past customers — compliance, list quality, offer design and follow-through for UK businesses

How to use this checklist Work through the ten checks in order before any reactivation campaign sends. The first six are about whether you MAY email the list (UK law) and whether the list is worth emailing (quality). The last four are about whether the campaign will actually convert. If all ten pass, your list is ready to produce revenue with no ad spend. If any of the legal checks fail, stop — compliance is what makes reactivation revenue repeatable rather than a one-off gamble.

1. You have at least 200 past customers Below a few hundred contacts the percentages still work but the absolute numbers stay small — a 4% booking rate on 80 contacts is three jobs. Worth doing, but set expectations accordingly. Above 500 contacts, a single campaign routinely funds itself many times over.

2. Every address came from a genuine sale The UK PECR Regulation 22 soft opt-in only covers addresses collected during a sale or negotiations for a sale. Addresses harvested from enquiry forms, bought lists or networking events do NOT qualify under this basis.

3. The list is customers only — no cold enquiries blended in Mixed-provenance lists do not qualify wholesale, and this is the single most common DIY failure.

Separate buyers from browsers before anything else; only the buyers get the campaign.

4. Your offer is similar to what they originally bought Second soft opt-in condition: a heating firm can promote boiler servicing to boiler customers; it cannot promote an unrelated product line. Stay inside the relationship the customer actually has with you.

5. Every email carries a working opt-out Third condition, non-negotiable, every message. An unsubscribe that works in one click — and a suppression process behind it that actually removes people.

6. The legal basis is documented before sending Write down when the addresses were collected, how, and why the soft opt-in applies. If a regulator or a complaint ever asks, the answer exists in writing, dated before the send.

7. One offer, one real deadline A voucher with a date on it beats "get in touch anytime" every time. The deadline is what creates the Friday surge — without it, the sequence is just newsletters.

8. The week is planned as a sequence, not a blast

Monday announces. Tuesday to Thursday build with a different angle each day — momentum, the strongest angle, social proof. Friday sends three emails: 9am ends-today, 2pm final-hours, 8pm last-chance. Deadline day is where most responses land; the structure exists to harvest it.

9. The phone gets answered — including Friday evening The CTA is a call, not a click. If the last email lands at 8pm and the phone rings at 8:15 into voicemail, the urgency you built is wasted. 10. You can count the results Bookings, revenue and opt-outs per campaign, written down. Scoring: 10/10 — run the campaign this month. 8–9 with legal checks passing — fix the gaps and run. ANY legal check failing — do not send; fix the list first.
