Executive Report

Dear Community,

We had a great start to this term, with all staff from across the college coming together on the first day back at LHC to focus on nyaa daa ngumba guurii JaaJams (Looking show/guide/teach Guurii kids). Local Aboriginal community members started the day with a smoking ceremony to get rid of the bad spirits. We were also privileged to hear personal experiences from our Deputy Trent Graham about Cultural Humility and Cultural Safety. Staff also participated in workshops on Aboriginal Languages and Cultures, Wire Walking for Wellbeing, Stronger Smarter philosophy and Racism Free Schools .

High quality teaching and learning is happening in all classrooms and parents/carers are encouraged to keep up to date with due tasks on the parent Sentral portal. A good conversation starter is also how your child is using their student diary to plan for due tasks and homework. Year 12 reports are being distributed to students on Friday 12th and should lead to a conversation about work well done and how to improve.

Already this term students have represented the school both individually and in teams for tennis, hockey and football, congratulations! Our Aboriginal student leaders have been participating in the Widgabul Wiyabul leadership program with their peers from KHC and RRHC. Permission notes and information will come home this week about our upcoming year excursions. Years 10 and 11 are heading off to Milson Island in the Hawkesbury this term in week 9 from the 19th -23rd of June, while Years 8 and 9 are going to Lake Keepit in Tamworth next term from the 14th -18th August. Both camps are run by Sport and Recreation and are fully subsidised for our students to attend for free.

There has been a resurgence of Covid-19 in the community. Students should stay at home if unwell and only attend school when they are symptom free. We strongly encourage all students to follow the guidance issued by NSW Health.

A reminder that Vapes are prohibited items on school grounds. Students associated with vaping at school will be managed under the school’s behaviour strategy. NSW Health has advised there are significant health impacts from vaping including but not limited to behavioural/social/mental health issues, nicotine dependence, tooth decay and changes to airway and lung function.

Our support unit refurbishment is well under way and we look forward to the purpose built facilities that will be installed, replacing the existing demountables later in the year. We are also in the process of getting electronic gates fitted to the main entries to the school.

STUDY SKILLS HANDBOOK ~ RESOLVING CONFLICT AROUND HOMEWORK

Some of the most common schoolwork arguments at home lead to statements like this:

• “Stop playing computer games and do your homework.”

• “Why haven’t you started your homework yet?”

• “What do you mean you have no schoolwork to do?”

If these are common refrains in your household there are some simple steps that can be taken to deal with this.

Step 1: Family meeting. Both students and parents get a chance to explain what is bugging them.

Step 2: Agree on how much time will be allocated to schoolwork per day or per week. Minimum would be around 1 hour per day.

Step 3: Agree that during this time homework will be the first priority, then assessments and any remaining time should be spent on independent learning (e.g. reviewing difficult work, making summaries).

Step 4: Allocate set times for schoolwork and write these out and put them on the fridge e.g. Monday 45pm, 6-6.30pm.

Step 5: Agree that in these blocks of time, there will be no personal technology use (preferably phones switched off and put out of sight).

Step 6: Decide on rewards and consequences if the agreement is not honoured. There are many units in www.studyskillshandbook.com.au that can help you specifically with these areas. For example.
