FOREWORD Dear (future) Mechanical Engineering student, The moment you enrolled yourself for a study in Eindhoven, you actually enrolled for a whole new way of living. You probably imagined the beginning of your career as a Mechanical Engineering student to be different.

Despite all changes in the introduction week and education, you will still get to know the ins and outs of the student life in the upcoming weeks.

One of the things you will encounter is your departmental newspaper: openME. The openME is brought to you by the Editorial Committee of your very own Study Association, W.S.V. Simon Stevin.

Next to an online webpage filled with all kinds of articles related to Mechanical Engineering, we publish a physical newspaper twice a year.

This is a very special edition of openME, the first introduction edition, written specifically for all new ME students. It is filled with valuable information regarding your study, fun technical articles and some tips and tricks for making the best out of your student life in Eindhoven.

Remote support Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, a lot of events and gatherings have been cancelled, including football matches. These matches are now being played behind locked doors, which drastically reduces the audience size and the match atmosphere with it.

Yamaha, the Japanese conglomerate, recognized this problem and has been working on a solution. With their ‘Remote Cheerer’ app, they give the spectators the power to once again support their favourite team. The app is connected to speakers that have been installed at the stadium and lets you cheer with the push of one of the ‘support buttons’. Yamaha gives you several cheery options, such as: applaud, encourage, cheer and special effect (whatever that is). Your support is then sent to the stadium and played over the speakers in real-time.

Initially, the system had been developed for people who are unable to attend football matches, because of a disability or an illness, for example. It turned out that it was also a perfect fit with the current social distancing rules. At the moment the Yamaha app is only available in Japan as an early test and only a select few Japanese football clubs can be encouraged remotely.

Living solar panel Medical implants, like pacemakers, are wonderful devices that have improved a lot of lives and thankfully have grown more common over the past few decades. However, these active implants require batteries to perform their function and eventually, all batteries run out of energy. Normally it is quite easy to replace an empty battery, but it suddenly becomes a lot harder when this battery is situated inside a patient’s body.

What if you could recharge such a battery, without invasive and risky surgery? That is the question that kept South Korean researches busy for a long time. They have been developing a method which makes use of the translucency of the human skin to pass photons through live tissue. The system consists of two parts, one inside the body and the other outside it. The first is a photovoltaic device which provides energy to the implant and can be charged via photons, much like a solar panel.

Tech

The second part is a micro-LED patch that can be attached to the skin and generates photons that effortlessly penetrate the skin and can charge the medical implant from the outside. This new method has so far only been tested on mice, but the results are very promising. It is easy to use, does not depend on environmental or weather conditions and is of course non-invasive. As is quite common in the medical world, a lot more testing is required before this system can be adopted all over the world, but it will be worth the wait.

Red hot topic Our red neighbor is becoming an ever-increasing interesting destination for scientific missions. It is of course not strange, seeing that Elon Musk wants to establish a Mars colony in the near future. A lot of missions have already been dedicated to investigating the Martian terrain and atmosphere, but this year not one, not two, but three rockets will be headed in the same direction. Among these three missions, is a new first; The United Arab Emirates will be launching its first interplanetary satellite, called Hope, to Mars in July. This satellite will study the lower atmosphere of the red planet, using two gas spectrometers. The fact that the UAE is sending a satellite to another planet is especially interesting, since its national space agency is only 6 years old. It is part of the government’s effort to transform the UAE from an oil-based economy to a more knowledge-based economy.

Besides the United Arab Emirates, China will also launch its first Mars mission in July.

This mission consists of a rover that operates on the ground and an orbiter that will stay in orbit around Mars. The machines work together to search for signs of life on the planet.

The last mission that will head for our neighboring planet is the rover Perseverance from NASA. This rover is also dedicated to finding signs of life and will collect and store samples of the Martian soil. These samples will be collected by a future mission and brought back to earth to analyze it in more detail.

Perseverance also carries a little helicopter with it, called Ingenuity. This helicopter has been developed to test powered flight capabilities on Mars, which is vastly different than here because of a much thinner atmosphere.

All three missions need to be launched in a six-week window that closes on August 15, since Mars will be closest to our planet during this period. It is crucial to launch the mission during this time, since the next opportunity will be in 2022. The spacecrafts will be travelling for nearly half a year, when they finally reach their destination. So Mars is going to see a lot of visitors next year.

World record superconductivity A team of physicists in Germany have managed to set a new record for high-temperature superconductivity. Superconductivity is the physical phenomenon in a material that below a certain critical temperature the electrical resistance suddenly drops to zero and the magnetic flux field is expelled. These properties are very useful for all sorts of applications, such as MRI scanners and particle accelerators, but require very low temperatures to acquire. That is why researchers spend decades trying to achieve roomtemperature superconductivity at atmospheric pressure. If we achieve this, electrical efficiency will radically improve, as well as high-speed data transfer and power grids.

It would be a big deal.

Every few years we come a little bit closer to this dream. The previous record dates from 2014 and was held at 203 Kelvin (-70°C). The team led by Mikhail Eremets, improved on this record with almost 50 degrees, making the new record 250 Kelvin (-23°C). They were able to do this using lanthanum hydride, a combination between hydrogen and the metal lanthanum (number 57 on the periodic table). To achieve superconductivity at this temperature, pressure of 170 GPa (1.6 million times atmospheric pressure) is required, which makes it not yet suitable for household applications. But this large jump of 50 degrees instils confidence in the researchers that the dream of room-temperature superconductivity may one time can become reality.

It gives you much more freedom; freedom to fill in just the way you want. Being a student gives you the possibility to develop yourself for the rest of your life, meet new people who will stay your friends forever and simply have the best time of your life. Let me tell you how your study association, W.S.V. Simon Stevin, can fit in this picture.

You are all starting your time here at TU/e in a different way than we are used to. Perhaps you have therefore already decided to postpone getting a room in Eindhoven or you just could not wait get out of your parents house to live on your own. Nevertheless, this situation will definitely require some adaptation, something you will definitely notice in the beginning of your time here.

W.S.V. Simon Stevin (or just ‘Simon’ in short) fits perfectly in this new way of living. The association can make your time in Eindhoven not only very amusing but also easier. To start with one word that

which separates our study association from the student associations based in the city centre: the study. The Association is the bridge between the Mechanical Engineering student and our department.

Multiple student councils are held every quartile to offer students the possibility to give informal feedback. Teachers and other personnel get updated on this feedback to make sure the education is constantly improved. Besides that, we make sure books can be bought at a reduced price and everyone who wants to gather handy skills can follow numerous courses. Some examples of last year are welding, 3D-printing, negotiation, Photoshop, woodworking, and so on.

Association

Alright, so you have your room in Eindhoven, a big network of possible colleagues, you are washing your own clothes and following interesting courses. There is a big chance that numerous companies are waiting for you to work for them. Graduated Mechanical Engineers are undeniably one of the most wanted former students in the Netherlands. That is great of course, but gives you the problem of choosing your employer. You probably know the big ones like ASML, Philips and VDL, but there are a lot more companies to discover. That is why Simon Stevin organizes various activities to give you the possibilities to explore your future. We organize symposia every year, go on company visits (e.g. driving tanks at Defensie or visiting the biggest chemical plant of The Netherlands) and provide you with your Wednesday lunch during our weekly lunch lectures.

Activities The first weeks of your freshly started academic life can be quite hectic and confusing, especially now. Simon Stevin organizes all kinds of events in which you can get to know your fellow students and Simon Stevin in an unconditional and friendly way.

Examples of these activities are (if the Corona situation allows it): the freshmen barbecue, committee info lunches, waterskiing and intro camp.

Subscription for these events is possible through our website (simonstev.in), the W-app or in the Simonkamer (Gemini-North 1.61). You can also become a member of Simon Stevin on this website if you are not already enrolled.

As a freshman, it may seem as if it will take an eternity before you are defending your master thesis, but you will ask yourself where time has gone. So, where time has gone‌? One possibility is the multitude of leisure activities Simon Stevin has to offer you, all for comfortable student prices. Of course, studying will consume some of your time, but there will be plenty of time left to destress and participate in fun activities with your friends. The most famous leisure activity is the Thursday drink in our own pub De Weeghconst (Gemini-North 1.02). From 16:00 h onwards students descend to the basement of Gemini to meet with fellow students whilst enjoying a delicious drink.

Land yachts Something typical for our Association are the land yachts. A land yacht can be described as a sailing boat on wheels.

Around 1600, Simon Stevin built the first land yacht for twenty persons for Prince Maurits van Oranje. The Association used this as an inspiration to create an own fleet of land yachts, which consists of eight land yachts at the moment. Around five times per year, a group of Mechanical Engineering students travels to the coast to go land yachting. Also for you, there is the opportunity to join!

We are the 64th Board of Simon Stevin and we would like to welcome you to our beautiful association! As the Board, we are responsible for keeping the association running, supervising committees and organizing activities ourselves. We will organize a handful of activities especially for you as a freshman, to introduce you to the study. your fellow freshmen and our Association. Some activities that you don’t want to miss are the freshmen barbeque, introcamp and waterskiing. These activities will help you make new friends and grow closer to the friends you may have made during the introduction week. We hope you’ll join us in these activities!

Furthermore, we are also the main point of contact with our members and students of Mechanical Engineering in general. Starting this year, that also includes you! Do you want to voice your opinion about your study, learn something about our Association or student life in general or simply want to join us for a chat? Don’t hesitate to contact any one of us!

Simon Stevin is many committees rich. A committee is a group of members of the Association that join and organize activities or perform other tasks for the Association. The many active members that participate in these committees are the backbone of our Association.

You can join a committee as well!

AcCie The AcCie is a freshmen committee that will make sure you can participate in the most fun activities during your freshmen year. They organise two activities, which can range from carting to paintballing, and a themed drink!

ReAcCie The ReAcCie is a freshmen committee that organizes the Beach games for all interested freshmen. They also make the freshmen book where all freshmen can write a nice story about themselves and everybody can get to know each other better.

BattleCie The BattleCie is the last of the three freshmen committees. They organise battles between all the committees of the Association o find out which committee is the best. These battles range from small minigames, a pubquiz or escape rooms!

Association

Land Yachting Comittee The Land Yachting committee is the oldest committee of W.S.V. Simon Stevin and makes sure the land yachts of the Association are all fully operational. Every week there is either a meeting or a ‘beunavond’ where the land yachts are repaired or improved.

Editorial Committee The Editorial committee creates the articles for openME,. They write and designing the entire magazine. Articles can range from company interviews to leisure articles to your own preference! This committee is a definite recommendation if you want to write some fun articles while increasing your writing skills!

Photo Committee The PaparaCie is responsible for making and processing all of the photos of the Association.

Every activity, someone of the committee is present to make the pictures and normally this person is also responsible for processing and editing these pictures.

DIY CHESTBOARD WRITTEN BY ROELOF MESTRINER

As a prospective student of mechanical engineering, you most likely have a natural interest in how things are made. Some students just like to have some beginner knowledge on manufacturing and like to brag about expensive cars, others are fascinated with high-end dynamical systems found in rockets and some, just a few, want to make something themselves. Even it may not seem the case for a university which focuses on theory and research; there is room for all crafters and tinkerers on the TU/e.

Introduction Normally a student of mechanical engineering would be able to make use of our own workshop, ‘De Werf’, for all creativeness; but sadly it was closed during the summer break due to the Covid-19 crisis. A simple student like me needs to do something to fill the everlasting gap of the summer break, so I decided to start a small project at home; my own handmade chess board.

Ever since I was little I had a big interest in the game of chess; in my eyes it is the ultimate game.

There is no chance or luck involved, the rules are simple yet there are lim -> inf possibilities in which the game can end. A player is able to grow quickly in strategy, but is never too young to learn from opponents. Finally it is the game that is able to stand the tests of time. For me having a quality chess board at home is equivalent to having a grand piano; it can be used daily and has a nice aesthetic in the living room.

In this article I will present a small summary on how I made my chess board. There is a lot to find on the everlasting planes of the interwebs on how to do this and I guarantee that they do it better.

Nonetheless it might be interesting to have glance at my try since I, as most students, did not have all the proper tools do build this.

Instruction For the wood selection I used ash and meranti which were given to me as spares by a friend.

First I measured the amount of wood I had and decided upon the size I wanted

my board to be; which is around 30x30 cm.

I decided to make an end grain chessboard (commonly used in butchers blocks), which means that the grain direction is into the board.

I made some drawings and then I cut 4 longer strips from both pieces of wood using the table saw from my dad after which I sanded the cuts to ensure a straight finish. I glued the strips alternating together and cut the new board again in 8 strips. Flipping half of the strips creates the famous chess board pattern. Make sure to clamp the pieces properly when glueing to ensure a straight board. It is still possible that the strips are not that straight anymore at this point since the wood is hygroscropic and endures shrinkage and swelling; especially when glued.

To prevent large strains and internal stresses I sanded some ‘tactical’ spots before glu-eing. At this point I left the board for a couple of days to ensure that it would not deform a lot after sanding it straight. Finally I finished the board with 3 layers of Danish oil. In the spare time between the glueing sessions I also made some modern chesspieces according to this link (https://www. instructables.com/id/Mid-Century-ModernChess-Pieces/) from some scrap wood.

Even if the board did end up far from perfectly, I’m still pretty happy about the end results. This board will do for a long time, until I have the proper tools in my own workshop to redo the project. If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to contact me!

COVID-19, education and ME. How does the Coronavirus influence education?

This is your year. Finally, you are going to start the best study one can choose: Mechanical Engineering at the Technical University Eindhoven. For most upcoming students this means a new city, new friends and a new lifestyle. A lot of students look forward to this moment, but due to the coronavirus, some plans changed.

In this article, a short explanation is given about the changes at the university due to this new situation.

Introduction week

The introduction week is a week specially organized for the new freshmen students. In this week you will get to know your department, the university, the city of Eindhoven, all the association and most importantly your fellow students. During this week you will spend a lot of time with your introduction group and your two intro parents, who are older Mechanical Engineering students.

This year the introduction week will be different compared to previous years, as certain regulations have to be followed. This resulted in a partly online introduction week.

During this week you, and your intro group, will still learn everything there is to know for a student in Eindhoven. Already curious about what the program is for the introduction week, check out the Introduction week program below!

Education WRITTEN BY NICKY VERHEIJEN

All universities in the Netherlands follow the motto: “On campus if we can, online because we can.”. This means that they try to provide as much education on campus as possible and when not possible, an online alternative will be given.

In the ‘normal’ situation all education is on campus; lecturers, guided self-study and group projects. In the first quartile the university will start with bringing group projects back to the campus. The priority lies with you, the first-year students.

Slowly, following the restrictions and regulations of the government and the RIVM, the university will bring back more education to the campus.

After a day of studying, you want to relax with some friends and have a few drinks.

Luckily this is still a possibility! Despite the 1.5-meter society, the associations in Eindhoven still get the opportunity to organize activities. For the Study Association Simon Stevin this includes three kinds of activities: educational, career and leisure.

For first year students the leisure activities are an important moment to get to know your fellow students and to make new friends. There will be some drinks, a freshmen activity and an introduction camp.

All in all, together we will make sure that this will be an awesome year.

Bachelor Final Project Overcoming the limitations of the steel quenching setup Hi! My name is Alma and I am a fourth-year mechanical engineering student. I did my bep in the Power and Flow research group. I was supervised by Bart van Esch and Camila Gomez. Due to the corona virus my bep changed a lot. I had to suddenly switch to a numerical assignment. I was lucky that Camila was allowed in the lab eventually so I could finish the practical side of the project.

Education

Production of steel

During the production of steel, red hot steel slabs are rolled out into a thin slab in the Hot Strip Mill. After rolling, the steel is cooled by an array of water jets in the Run Out Table. This process is also known as quenching. The steel, moving at speeds up to 22 m/s, is cooled from 900 °C to the final coiling temperature that can vary between 700 and 150 °C. The temperature history of the steel will result in a different

microstructure and different mechanical properties, and therefore controlling the ROT is a crucial step in the production of steel.

Setup In the basement of Gemini, there is a setup in the TFE (Thermal Fluids Engineering) lab that can emulate this quenching process. The setup consists of a large tank of demineralised water. On the bottom of the tank, a pneumatic valve opens a water jet that impinges onto a hot steel plate. A borescope is inserted into the tank and attached to a high-speed camera. The

borescope is aligned with the water jet in such a way that lets us look trough the water jet. This way we can observe the boiling process during quenching with 81000 frames per second. On the side a heating element is inserted into

the tank. This should allow us to also do experiments using warm water.

During normal pool boiling there are

Boiling regimes different boiling regimes that can be observed, depending on the temperature of the material. Depending on the regime, the boiling and bubble activity changes, resulting in different heat fluxes.

With the borescope the boiling regimes during quenching can be observed. At first you can see a short period of film boiling.

Film boiling occurs when the plate is so hot that any water that comes close to the surface immediately vaporises resulting in a thin vapor film between the water and the plate. This vapor film acts as an insulator, resulting in a low heat flux during film boiling.

19 Flash cycle

After a period of film boiling, the surface temperature decreases to a point where the vapor film will collapse and rewetting (contact of liquid water and hot surface) occurs. Traditionally, the boiling regime occurring after rewetting is called transition regime. This regime was never fully understood. During a previous stage of the project it was discovered that the transition boiling regime actually consists of intermittent boiling explosions. During explosive boiling, the water in contact with the hot surface becomes too hot to stay in a liquid state. As a result, an explosive generation of bubbles occurs. The cold water from the jet condenses the bubbles, stopping the boiling activity for a short period of time, and resulting in intermittent boiling. This intermittency looks like flashes

changed. Now we also want to find out what the influence of changing the water temperature is. It will be the first time that the cooling process with high a jet temperature above room temperature will be observed. These new experiments could shed light on the newly discovered boiling regimes. Understanding what happens during quenching with hot water might help increase the stability of the quenching process and help control the temperature history of the steel more accurately.

Setup limitations With the current setup, it is not possible to obtain high speed recordings using warm water. We tried to do experiments with hot water, the image becomes dark and blurry.

It was suspected that this was caused by a

45 °C without pump

in the recordings. Since these flashes occur up to 40000 times per second (40 kHz), its observation was only possible thanks to the high frame rate of the camera.

As the plate temperature decreases more, this explosive boiling regime transforms into a regime where big bubbles are formed.

Next the boiling process will transform into stable nucleate boiling and finally single phase convection.

Why the experimenting?

In previous stages of the project, it was discovered that the frequency of the flashes changes when the plate temperature is

lack of mixing in the tank. When the water is heated, a temperature gradient is created.

This temperature gradient causes refraction problems resulting in the blurry image.

To try and solve this problem I installed a pump the day before the university closed due to the coronavirus. The pump is used to create forced convection inside the tank and this would decrease the temperature gradient. I was lucky that my PhD supervisor was allowed in the lab and could do some experiments for me. We were very happy to see that the pump worked, and we could now do some experiments with hot water.

We did experiments with a hot plate of 575 °C and a jet temperature ranging between 25 and 60 °C. The plate is heated in a little oven and put underneath the water tank. When the valve is opened the high-speed camera is triggered.

After the experiments were done, the data had to be analysed. What we were interested in is the duration of all the regimes for different temperatures and the frequency of the flashes during the explosive boiling regimes.

This could shed light on the heat flux during quenching with different jet temperatures.

Determining the duration of the regimes was an easy task. I could just watch the videos in slow motion and note the times at which the regimes started and ended. Determining the frequency of the flashes was a whole other task. You need to count how many video frame are between flashes, to estimate the time each boiling explosion lasts. The process is very complex, and the bubbles always look different, so it is not possible to write a MATLAB script to count all the flashes for you. I had to click trough every frame by hand. A very tedious job, but it’s not like I had anything better to do during the corona crisis.

The overall trend is that the jet temperature

significantly influences the cooling process.

The duration of all regimes becomes longer.

This was to be expected because hot water needs less energy to evaporate and this causes a lower heat flux. When the heat flux is lower, the surface temperature decreases slower.

Since the boiling regimes are dependent on the surface temperature you would expect longer regimes.

While the temperature of the plate did influence the frequency of the flashing during the explosive boiling regime, the jet temperature does not seem to have an influence. The only thing it seems to have an influence on is the frequency at which the flashing stops. Since the explosive boiling regime is a very new concept, we do not have an explanation for this yet and more research is needed.

Life in Zürich Since this was my first experience with Zürich and Switzerland as a whole, I had very few expectations on how it was going to be to live there. I expected everything to be more expensive than what I was used to back home. Which was indeed true, most things were a bit more expensive, but nothing to crazy. The only thing that really caught me by surprise was how expensive it was to buy meat in the grocery store. Which lead to me trying out and learning to cook a lot of delicious vegetarian and vegan meals. But on the other hand, the chocolate was cheaper, and more delicious than back home so that was a big plus.

Furthermore, I expected to be able to practise my German a bit. But this turned out to not be the case. Since roughly 1/3 of citizens are expats and at Uni about half of people were expats, I almost always spoke English. And even if native Swiss people spoke German, they spoke Swiss German

Another reason for the Sundays being extra busy in the woods is probably because a lot of shops and cafĂŠs are closed on Sundays. Because although it is a big city with lots of international citizens there are still some cultural habits which shows the conservative and Christian history of the city.

I really loved the fact that this city was so versatile.

It was an old big European city with a lot of shops, landmarks and tiny cosy streets. But at the same time, it has a lot of beautiful nature and outdoor activities all in or near the city centre. Unfortunately I had to leave very promptly due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but this city has surprised me in a positive way and I will definitely go back there in the future to explore and do the things I didn’t got a chance to do so this time around.

Dear student, Welcome to Mechanical Engineering. Starting your university education is always an exciting time.Moving to a new city, getting to know your fellow students during the introduction week and receiving the official TU/e laptop bag. All this before you even start following courses.

At the department, we are here to help you with the transition from going to school to studying at university. In the first weeks, you will notice our system is a bit different from what you might have been used to. Planning skills and self-reliance will, for instance, become far more important for a successful study strategy. But don’t forget to also have some fun.

My name is Rob van der Heijden and I am the coordinator for the bachelor and master program in mechanical engineering. This is mainly behind the scenes work and involves the planning and organization of the program, and in this way, I help to provide you with the best possible education.

But every now and then, I will address you at various information meetings.

THE ARTEMIS PROGRAM HUMANITY’S RETURN TO THE MOON WRITTEN BY JULES VAES Over a year ago NASA proudly announced that ‘we are going’. We will return to the moon to stay by 2024 with the new Artemis missions. In the year since the mission was first announced to the public, a lot has happened both at NASA and around the world. A lot more details have been revealed, so it might be interesting to catch up on the latest space news.

The Artemis program’s main objective is loud and clear; to land the first (American) woman and the next man on the Moon.

However, we achieved almost the same thing over half a decade ago, so why is this any different? Well, the main difference is that this time, we will not only go, we will stay.

In a spectacular fashion NASA laid out its plans to achieve this challenging goal.

Before anyone is sent to the moon, a lot of equipment and systems are already placed at the right locations. This approach is called pre-staging and makes sure that everything is in place for the first humans to arrive.

The Lunar Gateway

A gateway to space A key element of this procedure is the lunar station, Gateway. This mini-space station will stay in an elliptical orbit around the moon and will act as the main transport and communications hub between the earth and the moon. Like the International Space Station, it has been designed with adaptability in mind, which allows it to be expanded in the future with new modules, making it more suitable for deep space exploration.

Rocket power The new generation of astronauts will be launched into space by the brandnew Space Launch System (SLS), which will be the most powerful rocket in the world, surpassing even the legendary Saturn V rocket. Adaptability is the name of the game here as well with the two Solid Rocket Boosters being replaceable for more powerful versions that may one day help us get to Mars. This June NASA’s test team successfully completed the 199th structural test on the rocket, thereby concluding the structural testing campaign that began 3 years ago. The final

Unlike the Apollo spacecraft, the Orion space capsule will be able to transport six astronauts into orbit, instead of only 3. The capsule underwent rigorous testing over the last year in which it was subjected to extreme temperatures, lightning tests and intense vibrations among other things.

The conditions were tested at 40 percent beyond the maximal expected values and the capsule came out unharmed. Now it is being readied at Kennedy Space Center in Florida for its first unmanned flight.

The final stop Now we have seen how the astronauts will go to the moon, in what spacecraft they will travel and what their temporary home will be while in orbit around the moon, it is time to find out how they will go from Gateway to the lunar surface.

This last mode of transportation will be the Human Landing System or HLS for short. It will fulfil the same role as the Lunar Module of the Apollo era, only the HLS will be able to support a crew for a week. Much more is not known about this part of the Artemis program, since it is still in an early stage. Last September NASA challenged American companies to come up with designs for the HLS and on the 30th of April 2020, they selected Blue Origin, Dynetics and SpaceX to develop

their initial plans even further. Early 2021 we will know what the companies came up with and which one gets the green light to start development.

In order to achieve its challenging goal of going to the moon in 2024, NASA is collaborating with a lot of commercial and international partners. This is the first time the space agency relies so heavily on external development. This collaboration is also born out of necessity, since the prior deadline was 2028. NASA simply does not have the resources to be ready on time for launch, so must seek out the help of others. That is also the reason why it challenged American companies to design the HLS. The European Space Agency (ESA) helps as well; they have developed the European Service Module (ESM) that will power and propel the Orion spacecraft. All in all, the Artemis program is well on track to meet the 2024 deadline. 3 out of 8 Green Run tests have been completed successfully, which must all be completed to ensure that the core stage of the rocket is ready for the next generation of space travel.

There is still a long way to go, but NASA is confident that by 2024 we will see, for the first time in 50 years, boots on the moon.

How to find a room in Eindhoven?

A new start in a new city far away from the safety of your parents. This will most likely mean that you have to get a room to live in. It won’t be the first time that you hear that it will be a fun experience, but how do you go looking for a room in Eindhoven? How do you make sure that you can start your student life prepared for everything? Here you can find some do’s and dont’s to find a room in Eindhoven.

The four ways to find a room There are four major ways to find a new room, These are: through connections, Kamernet, Facebook and Vestide. Obviously there are other ways to find a room like private rent. But for most students these options are too expensive and your student life will be expensive enough already.

1. Connections

The easiest way to get a room is by acquaintances. It is quite a logical solution that gets forgotten by a lot of students. If a

room becomes vacant at a friend of yours, you have the possibility to hear it first and maybe get the room before a viewing.

2. Kamernet Kamernet is one of the older ways to get a room. To react to the rooms on Kamernet you have to make an account, these accounts cost money. A big benefit of Kamernet is that you can select on what you want. Everything of these houses is clearly visible from surface area to date of the viewing evening It is one of the most clear ways to find a room.

3. Facebook There are various Facebook groups where rooms are posted. If you search for “find a roommate Eindhoven”, you immediately get the largest group. Multiple rooms are shared here every day, This is the option with the greatest selection. When you

want to react to a room on Facebook it is smart to react beneath the post (something like PM sent), this will ensure that your potential roommates will notice you just a bit more then your competition and in times like these that can be a crucial advantage.

4. Vestide Vestide works on the basis of waiting time and is free. You can make an account and on the basis of how long you have your account and how far your original address is from Eindhoven. A higher waiting time means a higher preference over other students. It is free to use and you don’t have to do a thing to stay registered for Vestide, except study in Eindhoven. If you don’t use your waiting time, nothing happens. So no harm, no foul.

How to write a message

You have found a room where you want to live, what do you have to put in your message? For the residents it is “primetime”. Most of the students look for a room in the summer to boost the start of their new life in a new city. Some rooms do get more than a 100 reactions so if you want to have a chance, stand out of the crowd. Here are some tips to improve your chance of an invitation.

Firstly write something fun about yoursel. Be creative and make it unique. If there are 100 reactions and you don’t give any information about yourself, it is very unlikely that you will be contacted.

Secondly try to avert the cliché, you don’t stand out if you say the same things as the next message. In a sea of similarity you will be forgotten.

Try to judge your part as you will be leasing out the room. If you look at your reaction like you don’t have any prior knowledge of yourself, you will better be able to understand if it is memorable. Because the renters can and will only judge you on your reaction.

Finally arrived at the evening, what to do?

We finally navigated the minefield that is sending a massage, we have had a couple of nice reactions on our message and are invited to meet the house. For a lot of you this will be the first time you will be in such a situation, so what to do? Firstly make sure you are on time, it sounds as a no brainer but you will be surprised. At the beginning of the night the residents will introduce themselves and if you miss that it can be devastating for your chances.

Be realistic and honest with yourself, if you don’t like what you see because you think it is dirty or don’t like the people, you can better leave earlier. You will waste not only your own time but also everybody else’s.

Try to be yourself, the best version of yourself but don’t get a new personality for this evening.

When you get to choose your new roommate you will sense when someone tries to be something they are not and it is not a good look for someone to have.

Some invitations say to take your favourite drink. Don’t you worry about what you like and what you take with you. It doesn’t matter what the cost is of your drink that is not what is judged it is the story that you tell with it. That gives the best indication of what kind of person you are.

And finally, don’t let it get into your head. Unfortunately, you were not picked the first time.

It does not matter. Try to learn from your experience to be better next time. The room will come eventually.

As a new student, it is most likely you are new in the beautiful city of Eindhoven. This can, of course, be quite intimidating, studying in such a big city with a lot of things to do in it. Where do you start with exploring Eindhoven? How do you make the most out of this interesting city?

Eindhoven is one of the largest cities in The Netherlands. The city centre is quite cozy and has all the shops you would need for a nice day to relax from your busy study life. With multiple smaller cafĂŠs where you can enjoy the nice Dutch weather, there is always a place to relax. When you are finished with your shopping you can enjoy multiple cultural activities in the city centre like the cinema, theatre or

the museums. In the city centre there are also some nice restaurants to enjoy your lunch or dinner. If you want something more active in your nightlife you can visit Stratumseind, the most famous street in Eindhoven in your student life. Most of the nightlife you can find in this street with a multitude of bars and clubs where you can party all night long.

With a walking route across the city you will be amazed by the expertise of these artists. Every edition has its own theme and will never get stale.

Freshmen activities As a freshman it is most likely you know nobody from your fellow freshmen at the start of your studies and one of the best ways to get to know each other is through our Study Association W.S.V. Simon Stevin. Each year some of your fellow freshmen organize fun activities for other freshmen from mechanical engineering to enjoy. In these activities you can see new parts of the city of Eindhoven which you previously never thought about.

Glow Eindhoven is festival of light that is held in the city centre of Eindhoven in November. In this festival there will be around 30 artists making a giant light art exposition of the public space of Eindhoven.

Dutch Design Week (DDW): The biggest design event in Northern Europe. More than 350,000 visitors enjoy this week of design across the city.

All aspects of design are on offer with an emphasis on the experiment and innovation. DDW concentrates on the design of the future.

The best tip I can give you on exploring the city is to try and figure out what you like. It is a unique chance to start over after your prior education. So try new things and maybe you’ll enjoy something you would be surprised by.

In Eindhoven, not everything has to be about studying your courses and getting your ECTS together. Of course, there is the study association where you can become an active member and join committees. However, the Technical University of Eindhoven has a wide range of student teams and projects that you can join and get involved in.

Project areas

Everybody knows the solar family car that is built at the TU of Eindhoven, but this is not the only student team that you can join. There are several other teams that are active in the automotive sector.

Tackling completely different problems are the teams in the Thermo Fluids Engineering field. There are a lot of projects running regarding the energy transition: going from fossil fuels to renewable energy sources. This sometimes closely relates to the automotive projects, since these are almost always about electrical vehicles.

Apart from these well-known teams, there are a lot of other projects to participate in. The TU of Eindhoven also houses several teams that actively develop Artificial Intelligence, teams that want to help the visually impaired and teams that

As you might have noticed by now, there are a lot of different teams and projects to join. Certainly, there is a team for everybody that wants to join one. But besides the projects themselves, why would you join such a team?

Reasons to join a student team

Obviously, you do not join a student team just for fun. All student teams have ambitious goals to lead to a better world. Mostly pioneering in their own field of interest, you can really contribute to creating topnotch solutions. Besides that, all teams are interdisciplinary, meaning that you work together with all kinds of different people from all studies on the campus.

You not only get to know lots of new people, but also learn to cooperate with different kinds of people in a team.

Student teams are almost always recruiting new members, and most of the time you can join both part-time and full-time.

Later in your Bachelor, you can even decide to do a Bachelor End Project in a student team. Having participated in student teams will be an extra to add to your CV, besides being a very good source of experience on the work floor.

HASHI The goal of this puzzle is to connect all the islands with the right amount of bridges. The number in each island tells you how many bridges should be connected to it. But no more than two bridges in the same direction are allowed and the bridges can only be vertical or horizontal. The bridges are also not allowed to cross islands or other bridges and when completed, all bridges should be interconnected and thus enabling a passage from any island to another.

KAKURO

The object is to fill all empty squares with the numbers 1 to 9. These numbers should be filled in so the sum of horizontal block is equal to the number on the right and the sum of the vertical block is equal to the number on the left of the diagonal line in the coloured squares. In addition, it is not allowed to use a number in the same block more than once.

SLITHERLINK This puzzle consists of a grid of points where each space between four points forms a cell. The number in the cell indicates how many sides of the cell is hit by the line. The object is to create a single room of this one connected line. In addition, it is not allowed to have the line cross itself.

The Chairman and the Secretary have 100 members. To help keep track of them all, they have written a (unique) number on each general members’ hand, from 1 to 100. In preparation for the General Members Meeting, the Secretary put the general members along the sides of Gemini. The members numbered from 1 to 50 like Gemini-North, and those numbered from 51 to 100 like Gemini-South. However, due to a miscommunication, the Secretary placed the odd-numbered members on the north side, and the even-numbered members on the south side. The Chairman wants to sort them out, with these restrictions: The Chairman can only carry one general member at a time.

The Chairman may start by grabbing any member, from either side of Gemini.

After setting down a member, the next member he grabs must be from the same side of Gemini, and the absolute difference between the number on the member being grabbed and the most recent member that was left can be no more than 3.

The Chairman cannot pick up a member immediately after leaving it.

After grabbing a member, the Chairman MUST move it to the opposite side of Gemini.

Will the Chairman be able to sort out all his general members, so those numbered from 1 to 50 finish on the north side, while those numbered 51-100 finish on the south side?
