2023 Pembina Triangle Association Commercial Producer Of The Year
B2 Cattle Co. started nearly 30 years ago in the Austin, MB area as a transition away from Beswitherick Farms, a generational dairy operation. We are a mixed grain and commercial cattle operation farming in the Arizona district. Our first Simmental bull was bought from Mel Johnston to cross with our Hereford influenced cows, and we have never looked back. Our herd consists of Angus x Simmental cattle which we breed for efficiency on our native pastures, milking quality, mothering ability, and temperament. We are a cow/calf and backgrounding operation, as well as raising quality replacement heifers for many customers, both new and repeating. B2 Cattle Co. focuses on quality new and proven genetics to maintain the quality of the herd while being able to change with the buyers trends. We use AI technology on our heifers and some of the top matrons of our herd, while purchasing top quality bulls, bred heifers, and cows to integrate into the herd. We maintain a high-health herd and purchase from like-minded farms to keep the quality consistent for our buyers, as they are always seeking out our animals when we market them. We have bought many fleckvieh, fullblood, reds and blacks throughout the years with direct lines going back to WFL Westcott, Day 12 O’Clock High, Great Guns Moses, WFL Absolute, Wheatland Final Affair, Wheatland Kill Switch, Wheatland Circuit Breaker, and KOP Crosby, to name just a few. We have purchased many quality animals from many members of the Pembina Triangle Simmental Assoc., as well as from across all of Manitoba, and are very humbled to be receiving this award. B2 Cattle Co. will continue for many decades to come as the next generation on our farm is now making their presence known in the cattle industry, and we couldn’t be prouder to be working alongside our children on our operation.
2024 World Simmental Congress Simmental breeders from around the world are coming to Alberta for the 2024 World Simmental Congress from July 28 – August 4, 2024. The World Simmental Fleckvieh Federation (WSFF) meets biannually at congresses which are rotated through different countries each time. It has been 18 years since Canada held the World Simmental Congress and the Canadian Simmental Association is thrilled to be hosting this prestigious event again. The Congress events that are taking place in Calgary, Olds, and surrounding areas include: cultural excursions that highlight points of interest for international guests, several farm tours to celebrate various aspects of the Simmental breed, a world class sale hosted in Olds at Bohrson Marketing Service’s facility, the Young Canadian Simmental Association (YCSA) National Classic show at Olds Regional Exhibition, and a traditional rodeo event. We run a herd of purebred Simmental and Simmental cross cattle. I am 18 years old and I am currently in my first year of a Bachelor of Science in Nursing at Queen’s University. grew up exhibiting Simmental cattle through 4-H where I had the opportunity to show at various local, provincial, and national shows. I am very thankful for the opportunities that being involved with the Simmental breed has brought me. The agriculture industry has undoubtedly helped shape me into the person I am today. I look forward to giving back to youth and women in agriculture in a similar way it has supported me growing up. I extend my utmost gratitude to the Friends of Canadian Simmental Foundation for awarding me with the Friends of Canadian Simmental Foundation Scholarship.

I grew up on a mixed cattle and grain farm in Southeast Saskatchewan near Stoughton. Growing up in a small community I was extensively involved in 4-H for fourteen years and various sports. I started a small purebred and commercial cow herd from a young age that has grown over the years. I started my journey away from home in 2019 when I attended the College of Agriculture before getting into vet med. Once I was accepted into veterinary medicine, I was on track to graduate vet school in 2025 and continue my plans of becoming a large animal veterinarian, with hopes of one day specializing in bovine reproduction.

18-SIMMENTAL FOCUS
Can We “Super Charge Colostrum Using Pre-Partum Supplementation?
BACKGROUND High quality colostrum is essential for calf health and growth. Calves that do not receive adequate amounts of high-quality colostrum after birth are more likely to get sick, have poor performance, or even die. During the final two months of gestation, cows experience increased nutrient demand due to exponential fetal growth, meaning cow nutrition is critical at this point to maintain adequate cow condition, as well as colostrum production. Previous work has shown that cows that are supplemented with excess energy prior to calving showed minimal calf size effects, but an increase in colostrum quality and output, as well as minimized condition loss in cows. Due to the expense of supplementation with commodities such as corn, it is important to investigate the effect of duration of supplementation on cow and calf performance, as well as colostrum yield and quality. OBJECTIVES Investigate if prepartum energy supplementation for either 3 or 6 weeks prepartum can increase the quality and quantity of beef colostrum, as well as the impact of this supplementation on calf growth, and calf health. WHAT THEY DID This group looked at providing cows with supplemental energy for 3- or 6-weeks pre-calving to assess the effect on colostrum quality and calf growth and health. They used 82 crossbred cows that were bred using AI. The cows were housed at the Ontario Beef Research Centre and grouped by predicted calving date. Cows were enrolled on diets that met energy requirements (Control; no supplement) or provided energy at 120% for 3 weeks (3WK) or 6 weeks (6WK) prior to calving. Diets were delivered as TMR and were fed to cows through Insentec feeders that allow for feed intake and feeding behaviour to be recorded. Cow weights, rib and rump fat and metabolites were followed for 6 weeks prepartum and 9 weeks postpartum. Colostrum was collected from cows at calving and was analyzed for yield, composition, and IgG (an antibody important to the calf immune system). Colostrum was then fed back to the calves. After calving, cows had access to a common lactation ration. Calves were followed for 9 weeks post-calving and weights and IgG were analyzed. (continued on page 20)
SIMMENTAL FOCUS-19
20-SIMMENTAL FOCUS
Colostrum Supplementation (continued from page 18)
WHAT THEY LEARNED The results of this study did not find differences in colostrum yield or composition as a result of over-supplementation, nor were there differences due to duration of over-supplementation of energy. When analyzing components, fat, crude protein, lactose, gross energy, and somatic cell count were not affected by energy supplementation for 3 or 6 weeks. Urea was greater in the colostrum of cows that were not supplemented, due to the presence of urea in their diet. Cow performance was not different before calving. Cows that were supplemented energy did not gain more rib or rump fat depth, nor did they gain more weight. Metabolic markers of fat mobilization (non-esterified fatty acids) were greater for cows that were not supplemented with energy prepartum, suggesting that the cows that were not supplemented had insufficient energy and had to use more body reserves to meet their energy demands, relative to cows that were supplemented. The severity of the insufficient energy was not great enough to impact performance. After calving, the cows that were not supplemented still had greater metabolic markers of fat mobilization to meet energy demands. These cows also lost weight after calving, whereas the cows that were supplemented gained weight. Calf birth weight was not different as a result of supplementation. Calves from cows that were supplemented for 6 weeks had greater average daily gain for the first 7 days of life than calves from cows that were supplemented for 3 weeks. After the first 7 days of life, calf weights and average daily gain were not affected by the supplementation of the cow before calving. Calf IgG, an important antibody to calf immunity in early life, was also not affected by supplementation of the cow prior to calving. WHAT THIS MEANS The results of this study suggest that energy supplementation of cows for 3 weeks or 6 weeks prior to calving did not affect calf performance or colostrum yield and composition, compared to cows that did not receive supplemental energy before calving. Despite the absence of effects on calf performance and colostrum, supplementation of energy did appear to reduce the mobilization of the cow’s own body reserves to meet her energy demands. This is beneficial to producers, as loss of body condition around calving can increase the risk of disease in the cow and can delay rebreeding. Restoring a cow’s body condition after it is lost can also be costly to producers. Calf birth weights, in relation to calving ease, are often a concern with supplementation prior to calving. Supplementation did not increase calf birth weight. We are sincerely grateful to our Foundation Partner, Cargill, who is helping us increase travel budgets for the upcoming program year and support our program mentors! Cargill has been a tremendous partner since the inception of the Canadian CYL Program as the very first program sponsor. Through Cargill’s global grant matching program, the 2024-2025 program year will see each participant have access to a $3000 travel budget, an increase of $1000 for each participant. Starting in August 2024, Cargill’s increased support will also be used to help fund mentors’ attendance at the annual CYL Graduation at the Canadian Beef Industry Conference with their mentee. The CCA looks forward to this continued partnership with Cargill to build a sustainable industry though investing in a strong generation of young leaders. Semi-finalists will be selected from submitted written applications available on our website and will be invited for an expense-paid trip to attend the Canadian Beef Industry Conference in Saskatoon, SK in August 2024. At the conference, semi-finalists will compete for a spot in the upcoming program year through the annual CYL Selections competition. We strongly value diversity amongst applicants and all are welcome to apply, as it plays a key role in young leaders gaining exposure to new ideas and creating peer learning experiences. If you’re between 18-35 and interested in taking the next step to fast-track your involvement in the Canadian beef industry, please visit our website for more information. Please direct any questions about the program or application process to CCA Youth Programs and Engagement Manager, Jessica Radau, at radauj@cattle.ca.

Understanding Mycoplasma Bovis Pneumonia In Beef Cattle
BACKGROUND Mycoplasma bovis has emerged as a major cause of pneumonia and arthritis in Canadian beef cattle, but there has been a lack of progress in controlling these diseases because of the uncertainty of how they develop. M. bovis pneumonia is important because of its frequency (27-54% of mortalities), economic losses, and animal suffering from chronic pneumonia and arthritis that often responds poorly to therapy. Current vaccines are not effective, and control depends on metaphylactic/interventional mass medication with antibiotics. However, alternative control methods are needed because of increasing frequency of antimicrobial resistance and consumer concerns about antibiotic use. Nearly all beef calves are infected with M. bovis in the early feeding period, but only a minority develop pneumonia (Castillo 2012). Thus, understanding determinants of disease outcome (i.e., why some infected animals develop pneumonia while others remain healthy) is of key importance. The appearance of the lesions, patterns of M. bovis and Mannheimia haemolytica co-localization, and epidemiology all suggest that the inflammation and necrosis induced by prior M. haemolytica or viral infection creates a tissue environment favorable to development of M. bovis-induced tissue damage. Prior work suggested that the interaction between lung macrophages and M. bovis likely determines disease outcome, and this knowledge will be key to improved control strategies. OBJECTIVES Determine how M. bovis causes damage to the lung, and what conditions are required for M. bovis to cause respiratory disease, in order to identify targets for disease prevention. Determine why M. bovis infection leads to pneumonia in some calves but not others, by investigating how prior cell death or inflammation causes M. bovis-infected macrophages to promote harmful inflammation and tissue damage instead of tolerating and controlling the infection. WHAT THEY DID Cells (macrophages) from the blood and the lung of calves were cultured in the lab and exposed to inflammatory stimuli (killed bacteria, or products of other cells stimulated with killed bacteria) and then infected with M. bovis. We measured the effect of the prior inflammatory stimulus on death of the macrophages, and on production of pro-inflammatory and lungdamaging substances by the macrophages. (continued on page 50)

Understanding Mycoplasma (continued from page 46)
Experimental challenge studies were used to test the effect of inflammation and damage to lung tissue on the response to Mycoplasma bovis infection. Calves were infected with both Mannheimia haemolytica and Mycoplasma bovis bacteria to create inflammation and tissue death within the lung, but then treated with an antibiotic to kill the Mannheimia but not the Mycoplasma. Control calves received only Mycoplasma bovis and antibiotic. The severity and nature of the disease were monitored clinically and after euthanasia. An experimental study involving natural disease was done using 60 auction calves at high risk of BRD. On the morning after arrival to the feedlot, calves were aerosolized with either killed bacteria to induce inflammation in their respiratory tract or with saline as a control. Calves were monitored for 28 days for clinical signs, changes in the lung detected by ultrasound, need for antibiotic treatment, and death. WHAT THEY LEARNED The lung lesions of M. bovis pneumonia develop characteristic areas of dead tissue that are thought to provide a refuge for the bacteria and are one reason that antibiotic treatment may be unsuccessful. This study found that these areas of dead tissue are formed by macrophages derived from the blood (not macrophages already residing in the lung, or other cells). This discovery will allow more precise investigations of the process using blood-derived macrophages cultured in the laboratory, in ways that cannot be done in live animals. Using this approach, they found that conditions representing lung inflammation or infection (killed bacteria, or the products of other cells stimulated by killed bacteria) make these macrophages respond differently when they encounter M. bovis. Specifically, the pre-stimulated cells responded by producing more harmful inflammatory mediators and lung-damaging substances, and the macrophages were more likely to die in a way resembling the dead tissue seen in the natural disease. Next, these concepts were applied to calf studies. Calves infected only with M. bovis developed mild signs of disease. In contrast, disease was more severe if there was an early episode of inflammation and tissue damage in the lung (induced by transient infection with M. haemolytica bacteria and M. bovis, with antibiotic treatment soon afterward to kill the M. haemolytica. Also, prior M. haemolytica infection increased the likelihood that M. bovis would spread to the joints to cause arthritis. Furthermore, we studied the same process in the context of natural BRD in high-risk calves. Thirty calves were aerosolized with killed bacteria to induce inflammation in their respiratory tract. These calves developed more frequent and severe mycoplasma pneumonia than high-risk calves that did not receive the aerosolized killed bacteria. This included greater fever and levels of blood inflammatory proteins, reduced weight gain, higher frequency of lung disease detected by ultrasound, more M. bovis in the upper respiratory tract, and higher frequency of mortality due to mycoplasma pneumonia. (continued on page 52)
SIMMENTAL FOCUS-51
52-SIMMENTAL FOCUS
Understanding Mycoplasma (continued from page 50)
WHAT IT MEANS Infection of healthy calves with Mycoplasma bovis does not cause severe disease by itself, but inflammation and tissue damage in the respiratory tract of apparently healthy calves creates a situation where a subsequent M. bovis infection is much more harmful. Respiratory tract inflammation on the day after arrival to the feedlot contributes to the development of BRD, and mortalities due to M. bovis occurring in the second month after arrival are influenced by factors initiated in the immediate post-arrival period. Furthermore, because it is impossible to precisely study some of these immune responses in detail in calves, identifying blood-derived macrophages as the main cell type forming the characteristic lesions of M. bovis pneumonia is important to further unravel how this disease develops, and to develop specific interventions. With this approach, we uncovered a sequence of molecular and cellular events by which early inflammation leads to worse disease. The findings of this study suggest the following approaches to preventing losses from M. bovis infection: Reduce the prevalence of M. bovis infection. However, since this infection is currently common in Canadian beef cattle and spreads readily in groups of co-mingled calves, we expect it will be difficult to substantially reduce M. bovis infection prevalence in beef feedlots in the absence of an effective vaccine. Control concurrent respiratory diseases such as viral respiratory disease and shipping fever pneumonia, which worsen the outcome of M. bovis infection. Minimize inflammatory responses that may not cause disease on their own but predispose to worse outcomes of M. bovis infection. These subclinical inflammatory responses may be caused by viral infection, and perhaps by stress. Other work by this group also suggests that dust also stimulates respiratory tract inflammation in cattle. Knowledge of how the early inflammatory response leads to “cellular suicide” of macrophages and the development of caseonecrotic lesions may lead to specific pharmaceutical methods to prevent this adverse outcome of M. bovis infection.
