ELM CREEK 4-H BEEF CLUB The Elm Creek 4-H Beef Club was founded in 1952 by John Ryrie. The assistant leaders were Clarence Sisson and Jim Watson. This year, the head leaders are Lisa and Trevor Carlson, and assistant leader is Jeremy Vandenbos. We currently have 23 members. In a regular year, the club would participate in club meetings, the local curling rally, judging and grooming clinics, our annual buyers’ banquet and various fundraisers. Our club also looks forward to our yearly show on July 1st in Elm Creek and helping out in the canteen, and of course, achievement at the Carman Fair. While our club is disappointed that we are unable to have our usual achievement at the DAS fairgrounds, we are grateful to Steppler Farms for hosting our first ever virtual show and sale. Hi, my name is Nathan Armstrong. I am in grade 3 with my friends at Elm Creek School. I play baseball and hockey. I learn by helping my dad with chores on our farm, where we raise Simmentals. In the future, I would like to raise cattle and have a grain farm. I picked this steer because he is a bigger-framed, deep-bodied animal that was raised on our farm. In my sparetime I practice with my compound bow. I hope to go deer hunting this fall. When I’m older, I plan to dairy farm on my family farm, Riedbow Dairy. This year I have a 75% Fleckvieh 4-H steer.
My name is Emma Riedstra and I’m in grade 3. I like all kinds of animals, especially my pony, Ginger. I trained her to be halter broke, and even give people rides when I lead her around. In my spare time I like to read, and bike. This year I have Speeculaas, my Speckle Park steer in 4-H. I raised him as a bottle baby, and I enjoyed taking care of him.

GRAYSVILLE 4-H BEEF CLUB
The Graysville Beef Club’s first organizational meeting was held on June 13, 1939 with 20 members. In its early years, the Graysville beef show and sale was hosted at the Graysville School grounds. In 1944, they moved to the Carman Fair and the successful partnership with the Dufferin Agricultural Society continues to this day. In 1952, as a result of the Hoof and Mouth epidemic, the Graysville 4-H beef show and sale was cancelled. That year, calves were put on trains and shipped directly to the Winnipeg Stockyards. The calves were then pen judged and sold there. Not dissimilar to what the Carman and Area clubs are doing for their 2021 show and sale.
The Graysville 4-H Beef Club is grateful for the generosity extended by Steppler farms for allowing us the use of their facilities to host the 2021 Carman and Area 4-H Beef Show and Sale. Our members are excited to be able to showcase their animals once again.

Hi, my name is Zach Theroux and I am 11 years old. This is my fourth year in 4-H. My favourite part of being in 4-H this year is learning how to groom and care for my steer project. My steer’s name is Hershey, and I think he will fill up a freezer with the happiness only Hershey can bring. He is a calm Fullblood Simmental calf, a quick-learner, and he has great hair.

Hi, my name is Suzanne Theroux, I am seven years old and this is my first year in 4-H. I do not have a market steer this year, but I like watching my brothers work with their steers. I like helping with the cows and my favorite part is feeding any bottle calves we have. I spend a lot of time in the pasture with my family, checking cows and enjoying nature.
MIAMI BEEF CLUB The Miami 4-H Beef Club has 19 members this year. Our members have been working within their family units on their heifer, market steer beef and market lamb projects. Over the years, each and every member has looked forward to displaying their growth in Showmanship, Grooming, and Judging at both the Miami Fair and Carman Fair. The Miami 4-H Beef Club members hope that they will be able to participate in a full 4-H year, next year. Leaders and members all miss the friendships, relationships, and competition that build their skills during the inter-club activities and fairs.

4-H HISTORY 4-H in Canada all started here in Manitoba! Roland, Manitoba is recognized as the birthplace of 4-H in Canada as they were the community in which the first organizational meeting for a Boys and Girls Club was held in 1913. In 1913 there were also seven other communities in Manitoba who formed Boys and Girls Clubs: Darlingford, Manitou, Neepawa, Oak Lake, Starbuck, Stonewall and Warren. The 4-H Museum located in Roland, Manitoba opened in August of 1990 and now has over 220 artifacts from across Canada and the U.S. The artifacts and memorabilia consist of anything related to 4-H such as trophies, uniforms, banners, records, scrapbooks and articles made in projects. The oldest artifact is a medal for a flower competition in 1911 donated by Walter McDonald (an original member of the Boys and Girls Club formed in Roland). In 1911, work was already beginning on organizing the Boys and Girls Club. Another medal donated by Walter McDonald is from 1913 for a gardening competition in the Junior Section. This past year we had about 160 visitors and 150 visitors to our website www.roland4hmuseum.ca. We had visitors from Manitoba, Sask, Alberta, Ontario and Switzerland. The 4-H Museum welcomes any artifacts or memorabilia that clubs, provinces or states would like to donate. When donating an item, please include the name of the club, whether the club is still active and the years of operation. The museum has many artifacts donated from provinces that recently celebrated their 75th Anniversary of 4-H.
