Hello!!! My name is Simi and welcome to my portfolio. I was born and raised on a little island south of Nigeria but I went to school in other parts of the country. The community on the island where I lived had all houses built in the exact same form and painted the same colors too, so you can imagine my fascination with buildings whenever we traveled to other places. That and many other things I’d be happy to talk to you about sparked my interest in architecture and I have just gained my Bachelor of Arts in Architecture degree from a small university in Elgin, Illinois. I am ready to make a difference through architecture because for me, architecture is more than the fancy building design and it goes deeper into the effects it has on its users, the community and the earth too. Thank you for reading and I hope you have some visual fun flipping through the pages of my portfolio. I have purposefuly kept a minimal amount of text on the pages so you can approach them like you would a building on the streets and let your imagination run wild. There are short project descriptions on the final pages of the book if you’d like to walk through some of my thoughts through the design process or know what it was all about. Enjoy!

envision elgin . Elgin, popularly known as the “City in the Suburbs” is a historically rich city located in Northern Illinois. There have been several efforts to increase the vibrancy of the downtown area and the Envision Elgin Tower seeks to be a capstone project to embody the city’s efforts to revitalize the downtown area. “Festival Tower” named after the park that dwells right across the building’s site creates a live, work and play environment for the city’s diverse users with programming including a theater, restaurant, fitness center, retail outlets for local businesses, office spaces and a variety of residential units as well. The site is split in two by an implied continuation of S Spring Street that cuts off at the beginning of the site. This allows a continuation of the park on the site and draws in community to the building which also continues the retail atmosphere of S Grove Ave on the first floor as well as the other community functions. The 20-Story mixed-use highrise embraces the future of design while enhancing community in the Elgin area. The tower has a sense of transparency that allows a more open feel and maximum enjoyment of the views surrounding the site which include the fox river on the west of the site. There are terracotta rain-screen and sunscreen panels depending on the elevation in colors prominent in the downtown area used around the spandrels and on the bottom community floors to incorporate some of Elgin’s history into the building. The balconies also serve as shading devices for sustainability purposes.

project descrip project descr mosque of elgin . Also in Elgin, there are four main faiths of it’s residents which include Christianity, Catholicism, Islam and Judaism. Of these four faiths, there is a varying level of adequate worship spaces for it’s believers. For Islam, there are a few worship spaces that are almost always repurposed residential or commercial buildings, but nothing that really portrays the Islamic faith in terms of Architecture in the city of Elgin and other surrounding cities. The site provided by the city for this project lies in the middle of a residential neighborhood and bordering the site at the west is the DC Cook/ Lovell Area Historic District. This Mosque complex is a more contemporary take on Mosque design and it translates traditional Islamic elements throughout the building. Because of it’s location, I broke the large programme down into smaller forms rather than one big mass to fit better in it’s residential context. These smaller forms surround an outdoor green space resembling common courtyards found in mosques for community gathering and outdoor worship. The mosque design celebrates islamic geometry and the vertically of colonnades found in traditional mosques. The main worship area and secondary multipurpose space are offset of the main axis to draw a greater focus to them and also allow the qibla wall to face Mecca as is important in the Islamic religion. The varying heights in the complex also help to transition between the very tall building across

the street and the shorter two storey residential units and bungalows around.

2 x 4 chair . The 2x4 CHAIR was made using only an 8’ 2x4 stud. This chair design economically used a minimal amount of material to create a functional and poetic piece. My design was inspired by the “Wakanda Forever” action from the movie, Black Panther that had recently been released. I took the interlocking x concept and continued it in various areas of the chair including finishing materials and colors. palazzo for piazza della rotonda . Located in Rome, Italy, the

Piazza della Rotonda is a vibrant town square housing the famous Pantheon and Fontana del Pantheon. The piazza designed sits right across the Pantheon. The ground floor contains retail units and above the piano nobile are residential units. The program is organized around a central courtyard which is a common organization principle in many Roman Palazzos in such locations.

addition to a masterwork .

The Farnsworth house in Plano, Illinois is a popular monument of Modern Architecture and this project was aimed at designing an addition in the form of a separate building to the Farnsworth House on the property that would contain gallery space, studio space and other functions for the hypothetical owner of the Farnsworth House. The addition carries the same modern

ptions rtions language in the masterwork and uses a majority of the same materials. The space between the two buildings on the site create a garden and outdoor gathering area which is framed with the implied boundaries of the buildings. The addition has the same open feel of the Farnsworth but has niche-like spaces for more privacy in private areas. The building is also elevated from the ground to prevent flooding issues that occur on site.

curtain wall section + type v model . These models were made

for an indepth study of curtain walls and basic residential construction. The curtain wall model studies the floor-towall assembly of the exterior enclosure of the Trutec Building in Seoul, South Korea. The residential model is that of a two-story wood frame house. Both models are built at 1” = 1’-0” scale.

nepal shelter . In 2015, an earthquake hit the capital of Nepal and we were required to design a temporary shelters for the inhabitants of Kathmandu, Nepal as they sought to find more permanent housing. Working with a $1500 budget only per shelter, we had to create suitable shelters with limited resources. The people of Kathmandu have a very close-knit community and extended family members would live together. It was important that this shelter was adaptable for bigger families and the community at large. The main materials are bamboo, which can be locally sourced and replaced incase of damage,

heavy duty tarp, custom made screws and heavy duty velcro. There is an optional thatch roof incorporated into the design. This element is a community empowerment activity as weaving is a common trade of the people in the community and this can help them have a part in the creation of their homes beyond the assembly. The colored tarp flaps in the national colors in front of the units can be put together with velcro when two units stand opposing each other to create an outdoor shaded area for family or community gathering. The units are also made so they can interlock each other in the case of bigger families.

cube interval .

This project’s aim was to represent and expand a concept, in this case, rhythm 3-dimensionally within a 6” x 6” constraint and make a hydrocal-cast model of the resulting composition. It is to explore spatial relationships and address the basic compositional issues of the organization of masses.
