MESSAGE FROM CHAMBER PRESIDENT The Simi Valley Chamber of Commerce is the premier business organization in Simi Valley. Established in 1952, the Simi Valley Chamber is dedicated to promoting the local business community through excellent programming, services and resources not only for our members, but the community at large.

At the Simi Valley Chamber, we work with our local city officials, other government officials, and local agencies to foster a better quality of life and make Simi Valley a business-friendly destination that both attracts new businesses and retains our existing businesses.

The Simi Valley Chamber strives to promote our community’s assets and attractions, and to elevate our local identity and strengths. We are very proud of the Simi Valley Chamber Tourism Alliance (SVCTA) and their efforts to increase tourism and visitors to Simi Valley. This year, the SVCTA launched Film Simi Valley, which highlights Simi Valley as a premier filming location to scouts and directors. In 2019, Simi Valley saw over 400 days of filming for movies, television shows, and commercials, and was one of the main locations in the Oscar-award winning film Once Upon A Time in Hollywood.

The Simi Valley Chamber is committed to connecting our local business interests with civic and community leaders, in order to plan for and create an increasingly prosperous future. We advocate for policy initiatives that advance the state and local economic climate, and which support our community through leadership and volunteerism.

The 5-Star Accreditation is the highest of several recognitions that the U.S. Chamber of Commerce awards to chambers nationwide. The Simi Valley Chamber has been awarded a 5-Star Accreditation from the U.S. Chamber in 2010, 2015, and most recently, in March 2020. The Chamber earned its original accreditation in 1990.

The U.S. Chamber’s Accreditation program is the only one of its kind in the United States to provide chambers a way to track growth and development, and assess their objectives and resources, program of work, procedures and achievements. Of approximately 7,000 Chambers around the United States, only 211 carry any level of accreditation, and only 126 chambers hold a 5-Star Accredited distinction. Moreover, the Simi Valley Chamber is one of only six in California to hold this 5-Star Accreditation.

SIMI VALLEY FAST FACTS Incorporated: October 10, 1969 City Name: It is believed that the name of the Chumash Indian Village “Shimiji” is the origin of the word “Simi” City Origin: Originally, this valley was inhabited by the Chumash Indians.

They settled in two villages named Simi and Tapo. In 1795, El Rancho San Jose de Garcia de Simi was granted to Santiago Pico and Luis Pena

by Governor Diego de Borica of Spanish California. This land grant, approximately 100,000 acres, was one of the largest ever made.

City Tree: Coast Live Oak. The Chumash Indians use the acorns from this tree for food.

City Flower: California Wild Oak. The Chumash Indians ate vitamin-rich rosehips.

Total Area: 41.7 square miles, located 45 minutes northwest of Los Angeles, in eastern Ventura County.

Population: 129,426 (March 2016) Elevation: 700 to 1,000 feet.

MESSAGE FROM CHAIR OF THE BOARD As a proud member of the business community here in Simi Valley, it is truly a privilege to serve as your 2020 Board Chair. I am honored and humbled to represent our Five Star Chamber of Commerce and look forward to building on all the successes of this year under the amazing leadership of our outgoing Chair Dorina Timbol.

The City of Simi Valley is a wonderful place to live and work and now in its 50th year, has never looked better. Our city is safe and clean, the economy is strong and vibrant and the future has never been brighter. Having been a business professional here in Simi Valley for the last 15 years, I can say it has been a pleasure and a privilege to call Simi Valley home.

As a public servant working for the Rancho Simi Recreation and Park District, but also as a business person running their two golf courses, I found myself in an interesting position bridging the gap between government and business, and when I was asked to become the District representative to the Chamber Board, it just seemed like a natural fit. The Chamber and the Park District, along with the City and the School District, all share the same greater goals of making Simi Valley an exceptional place to live and an even better place to start a business.

The Simi Valley Chamber of Commerce is a terrific organization focused on supporting businesses and providing resources to help new companies start and existing companies thrive. Our Chamber has a robust history of creating connections and driving innovation to benefit our members. Since its establishment in 1952, the Simi Valley Chamber’s mission has been to “promote a strong business community.” The specific challenges may change over the decades, but the role as a gatekeeper for the greater community remains the same: to ensure that Simi Valley grows through economic development, primarily driven by a thriving business community.

The Simi Valley Chamber advocates on your behalf to create a business-friendly climate and to promote economic development. To do this, it builds relationships and works collaboratively with local, state and federal officials to deflect bills that may adversely affect business growth, taxes, or the ability to conduct business.

The Economic Development Committee works on business attraction and retention within the City of Simi Valley.

The committee hears from city officials and business leaders regarding city economic development, business growth, and other issues that might impact the business development within Simi Valley.

The Simi Valley Chamber is the voice for business at the local, state and federal level. We address and monitor issues to keep our members informed of legislation that might impact business. The Chamber participates in weekly conference calls with lobbyists in Sacramento, communicates key information to members, and takes positions on pieces of legislation that will impact business.

ABOUT THE CHAMBER The Simi Valley Chamber of Commerce has been serving the community since 1952.

The Chamber serves as a liaison between the City and local businesses on issues regarding expansion, relocation, conforming to legal guidelines, and more.

AMBASSADORS COMMITTEE The Ambassadors Committee is the welcoming arm of the Chamber and is the force behind special events, ribbon cuttings, and mixers. Ambassadors also serve as “mentors” to new members and dedicate countless hours of serving the entire Chamber membership by promoting the Chamber’s message and mission to fellow business professionals in our community.

HEALTH & WELLNESS: The Health & Wellness committee provides education to members on health, wellness and fitness. The committee produces the annual Happy Healthy Happy Hour Mixer & Expo.

ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT The Chamber plays a vital role within the business community, providing business development programs, support services, marketing and networking.

RESTAURANT OF THE WEEK The Restaurant of the Week program highlights a different member restaurant each week through email and social media marketing. Community members are encouraged to visit the restaurant during the week for a business meeting, lunchtime meal, or family dinner.

RETAILER OF THE WEEK The Retailer of the week program highlights a different member retailer each week through email and social media marketing. Community members are encouraged to support the retailer’s business in their shopping needs.

BUSINESS BUILDERS Business Builders is a business mastermind group comprised of Chamber members to discuss best practices for business, marketing tips, and other tools for success.

LEADERSHIP SIMI VALLEY Focused on personal and professional growth, this 10-month program offers opportunities for community members to experience a behind the scenes look at Simi Valley.

Strong, energetic and ethical leadership is the key to any successful community. Since its incorporation in 1969, the City of Simi Valley has been fortunate to have dedicated, responsible leadership. As a community group, the need for additional leadership became apparent. Leadership Simi Valley prepares the next generation of men and women who will assume leadership roles in the Simi Valley community. Both seasoned leaders and those aspiring to be leaders will benefit from the Leadership Simi Valley program. The ten month program sets the stage for positive momentum and change in our community through a series of programs designed to inform and cultivate participant’s abilities. The strong alumni make evident the impact of what they have learned from the program by their involvement in the community.

Every Leadership Simi Valley class begins with a dynamic retreat where the concept of leadership is discussed, explored and experienced. The participants discover more about themselves and also learn and bond with their fellow class members during the series of monthly sessions. Following the retreat in September, class members meet one Friday a month from October through June, culminating in a graduation ceremony. The full day meetings involve visitations and hands on participation in a variety of informative sessions.

EMERGING LEADERS The Emerging Leaders of Simi Valley are 21 – 40 year old business professionals who do business in Simi Valley or the surrounding areas. The group meets monthly at rotating locations for various networking events, including a morning Coffee Connections, a lunchtime Meet & Eat, and an evening Unwind After 5 happy hour social.

HISPANIC/LATINO BUSINESS COMMITTEE This committee is designed to provide business resources and support to the Hispanic and latino owned and operated businesses in Simi Valley. The group plans educational seminars and mixers to showcase and promote the businesses.

CANDIDATE FORUM Each election year, the Chamber organizes a candidate forum to present the community with an opportunity to hear from the individuals running for office in the local community. This event, focused on the business community, provides candidates an opportunity to tell the attendees who they are and their priorities, and asks questions related to how they would serve our business community.

TOWN HALLS Each year, the Chamber works to organize town hall forums featuring elected officials at the state and federal level. This provides our business community with an opportunity to hear from our elected officials and ask any questions about local business and legislation.

Annual Events

The monthly Networking Breakfast is a great opportunity for Simi Valley Chamber members to network with over 100 other Chamber members and guests from the local business community. These powerful Networking Breakfasts allow members to showcase their businesses with their own verbal “30-second commercial,” while also prominently featuring Member Anniversaries, New Member Recognition, Chamber highlight, and a spotlight on the month’s sponsor.

The annual Simi Valley Street Fair is Simi Valley’s largest one-day event featuring over 400 vendors and an attendance of over 25,000. The Simi Valley Street Fair is free to the public and offers an exciting Entertainment Stage, a Beer & Wine garden featuring local breweries and wineries, a free Kids’ FUNZONE, and many other great attractions and opportunities throughout the day.

The Connections Networking Lunch Unscripted provides members with an opportunity to gather with other members over lunch in an informal, casual setting. Members are given the opportunity to present their “30-second commercial” and support the week’s Restaurant of the Week.

After-Hours networking mixers provide our Simi Valley Chamber members and guests the opportunity to meet and network with other chamber members in a casual, after-work atmosphere. These mixers are held at stores, restaurants and other local Simi Valley members’ locations, and have a different fun theme each month. Past mixers have included the Eat, Drink & Be Thankful Mixer, the Oktoberfest Mixer, the Mardi Gras Gumbo Cookoff and more!

The annual Salute to Excellence luncheon features the annual business achievement awards presentation and the official announcement of the new Simi Valley Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors. The event honors the outgoing Board Chair and welcomes the incoming Board Chair, as well as honors Business of the Year, Business Person of the Year, Non-Profit Organization of the Year, Community Volunteer of the Year, and the esteemed Strathearn Lifetime Achievement Award.

The State of the City is the City of Simi Valley’s annual update, with addresses from the Mayor of Simi Valley and the City Manager. This is an important opportunity for Simi Valley business leaders to receive an update on the City’s budget, public services, and other relevant information that may impact Simi Valley businesses, and family life in our community.

The Happy Healthy Happy Hour is an annual expo and mixer presented by the Health & Wellness Committee. Over 25 vendors in the health and wellness sector participate to showcase their goods and services to the community. This popular event, held each January, is a great way to kickstart the year.

The Simi Valley Library sits on the city’s civic center campus.

Originally opened in the early 1900s, it was one of the first libraries in the Ventura County. The library was first housed in a residential neighborhood. In 1980, it moved to its new home, a 35,000 square foot facility at the Simi Valley Civic Center.

The library participates in a collaborative project with the NASA Library Initiative for Teachers and Students (LIFTS) which offers STEM literacy resources to underrepresented and underserved local communities.

Community members are free to use any of its other services including wifi, early literacy sessions, adult literacy, language learning materials, homework help, public computer access, books, ebooks, CD’s, DVD’s advanced research assistance, and online databases.

The library also features a Business Center, color copying capabilities, BusinessDecision, (a consumer database for small business, non-profit organizations and entrepreneurs), a Small Business Reference Center and a Legal Information Reference Center. Also, the library has partnerships with Simi Valley Chamber of Commerce and Ventura County SCORE.

Strathearn Historical Park and Museum

Whether you’re an avid skateboard enthusiast and or want to see a collection of some of the most outrageous skateboards along with a history on the sport, you’ll want to visit the Skateboarding Hall of Fame and Museum. The skateboarding community has come together since 2009 to honor and celebrate its achievements.

Hours: 9 AM to 3 PM Monday-Friday (excluding major holidays) for self-guided tours.

If you want to see what old time Simi Valley was like take a walk through the Strathearn Historical Park and Museum. Features include a child’s playhouse; an exhibit of artifacts from the Santa Susana area; a 1902 church which was originally built as Presbyterian house of worship but became a Catholic church in 1910; the original headquarters of Rancho San Jose De Nuestra Senora de Altagracia y Simi (aka El Rancho Simi) from about 1810 to when it was purchased by Robert and Mary Strathearn in the early 1890’s; a two-story Victorian style home; one of 12 pre-cut houses brought by rail from Chicago in 1888 known as the Colony House or the Haigh-Talley Colony house; the first purpose built library of the Ventura County system; barns built in the 1940s and moved from Wood Ranch to the park in 1982; a store which served as a general store, meeting hall for Jehovah’s Witnesses and a residence before it became a barber shop from 1958-2006; a garage which now serves as the gift shop; and an apricot pitting shed.

Skateboarding Hall of Fame and Museum

In 1981, it was named a Ventura County Historical Landmark.

A decade later in 1991, the City of Simi Valley acquired the building and began refurbishing it. It opened in early November, 1995 as the Simi Valley Cultural Arts Center featuring a performance by Rita Moreno. Take some time to soak up the elegance of this neo-classic building with stained glass windows, ornate columns and some original lighting fixtures. The venue has been used for film shoots, recitals, meetings and private parties.

For a more off-the-beaten path experience take a ride to see Grandma Prisbrey’s Bottle Village. The art project was started in 1956 by Tressa “Grandma” Prisbrey, who was 60 years of age at the time. She began transforming her third acre rural lot into what is today Bottle Village. Prisbrey created a fantasyland of shrines, wishing wells, walkways, fountains, follies, plus 15 structures to house her collections, constructed with tens of thousands of bottles that she found at the local dumpsite. In 1979, the property was purchased by Preserve Bottle Village, a non-profit organization. The village has four designations. It is a California Historical Landmark, a Ventura County Cultural Landmark, a City of Simi Valley Cultural Landmark and is on the National Register of Historic Places.

HAPPY FACE HILL SIMI VALLEY Happy Face Hill Smiles Down on Simi Valley If you’ve traveled the 118 Freeway west toward Simi Valley, one of the first things you will notice off to your right as you drive between the exits for Keuhner Drive and Yosemite is a happy face emblazoned on the side of a hill. At night, this iconic artwork, reminiscent of the 1970s, is illuminated by solar lights, and by day you can see it in its unadorned state. The happy face, which made its first appearance in 1998, has become a community landmark and icon. How did it come to be? How has it changed over the years? And who has helped maintain it?

A Gardener’s Interpretation of Joy Sonny Klamerus, a Northridge, CA gardener and a practical joker, had an idea to bring a little joy to drivers stuck in their cars on the freeway. He wanted to draw a happy face.

He first tried his designs in Granada Hills and Porter Ranch in the San Fernando, but neither hillside could be seen from the roadways nor were his first designs long standing. It is his Simi Valley masterpiece that has stood the test of time.

Using a weed whacker and some weed killer, Sonny created the iconic image on what was then property owned

by Mount Sinai Memorial Park. Mt. Sinai had no idea the Happy face existed until after its completion. The original was approximately 150 feet wide. The memorial park eventually gave permission for the happy face to be maintained, as did Larwin Co., the subsequent owner.

Mourning an Old Friend After being marred by brush fires, residents began to miss their smiley pal and wanted him back. It had become a part of Simi Valley’s identify and was sorely missed.

In the meantime, Larwin Co., a developer, filed for bankruptcy. In 2010, The leadership of the Rotary Club of Simi Sunrise sprang into action, speaking to the the current landowner, Jon Friedman of Palmdale 47th LLC. Friedman wanted the face restored but was concerned about the liability of having people on his property, which since has been resolved with the current property management firm.

According to William F. Klepper, president-elect of Simi Sunrise, the club provides insurance when they work on the hill, which is a few times during the year.

Sonny had wanted to do the reconstruction of the artwork by himself; however, the Simi Sunrise club and community members were as vested in this project. They had been maintaining it when Sonny fell on hard times after the 2008 economic downturn. This smiling icon was no longer just Sonny’s artwork; it was theirs too.

Said Klepper, “Sunrise Rotary is honored to bring happiness to the community.”

In March of 2014, Steve Apostolof and friends snuck onto Happy Face Hill to illuminate the eyes and mouth of the face with solar lights so that the image could be viewed by passersby 24/7. The garden lamps defining the circumference of the face were added shortly afterward, courtesy of Doug Robertson and his young daughters.

2014 was not only a good year for Happy Face Hill but also its creator. That same year, Sonny won $1 million in the California Lottery’s 2nd Chance game.

The Other Side of the Hill Let’s not forget about the other side of Happy Face Hill seen by drivers on the eastbound 118 Freeway. After Sonny completed the Happy Face, he expanded onto the other side of the hill, which can be seen by eastbound traffic.

He drew a large heart, about 200 feet in circumference, with two smaller hearts inside.

Can a Hill Have Its Own Facebook Page?

Yes! Most definitely. The fan page, created in 2009 by Brian Dennert, a world history teacher at Simi Valley’s Royal High School, has more than 7,400 members. He used the example of Happy Face Hill to show his students how things can help define a sense of place. You can visit it at www.facebook.com/happyfacehill.

The Residents Who Saved and Enhanced Happy Face Hill With the owner’s permission, the Rotary club of Simi Sunrise gathered volunteers to help with the cleanup and resurfacing of the happy face. It’s not the same as the original, nothing ever is, but Simi Valley residents don’t seem to mind. They’re just glad they have their icon back to greet residents and visitors. Currently, The Simi Sunrise Rotary Club and the property management company continue to maintain the area.
