We are very excited to restart the wrestling program at SBA. Wrestling gives student-athletes of all sizes a chance to compete and enjoy the overall athletic experience. It also helps athletes learn self-discipline, setting, and attaining personal goals. Thanks to Mrs. Hansard and the board for this opportunity to positively impact students at SBA through our wrestling program.

The Silverdale Baptist Academy School Board exists to support the mission and vision of the Academy. The School Board is filled with church members, Academy parents and grandparents, and community leaders who are passionate about both student discipleship and financial stewardship.

After years of prayer, dreams, vision-casting, fundraising, and construction, the Silverdale Center project was finally shared with the world! On Monday, November 1st at 12:00 p.m. we ceremoniously cut the ribbon on this $12.5 million project as we entered into an exciting new chapter in the history of Silverdale Baptist Church and Academy.

This day was a culmination of prayer, sacrifice, and His faithfulness all during a pandemic. Our God was and is and will be faithful. What a powerful day as we celebrated His Goodness. We began this God-sized vision with dreams being written on large sticky notes and started the campaign with a night of Worship and Praise. Each current student, at the time of the campaign, received a prayer rock to remind them to pray for this project. Those rocks are now forever held in the beautiful water feature housed in the Silverdale Center lobby.

There are few places in Chattanooga that are as exciting as our SBA campus. When time allows, one of my favorite activities is to stroll around the buildings and our grounds where I can see our Seahawks growing and thriving before my eyes. Each year, we continue to add more opportunities that allow them to reach their full potential through academics, athletics, fine arts, outdoor education and most importantly, Kingdom education.

This past year, in particular, our growth was most evident through the addition of our Silverdale Center. Seeing our students “fly” in the Mary Poppins drama in the Creekside Theater, run the court in our first basketball game in the new gym, and practice graceful ballet steps in our dance studio are some of the many memories I will never forget.

Being named an exemplary school by our accrediting agency for another five-year term is another highlight of this past year (more information on page 21). As we continue to grow, I want to take a moment here to thank you, our stakeholders, for your continued support. Your prayers and your gifts of your time, talent and treasures are priceless. I hope you enjoy the 2021-2022 school year in review in the forthcoming pages. Our Seahawk family has much to celebrate!

Four years ago, He worked out every detail from start to finish in my hiring as a teacher and coach at Silverdale. It was His hand, and nothing I pursued on my own. It has quickly become a place that I feel so blessed to be a part of and feel the Lord working each day. The relationships I have developed with students and their families, high school students that I coach, and the faculty/staff that I work alongside, is something that I will cherish the rest of my life. They have become family to me. They are people I am so thankful to be surrounded by and do life with. I have seen God’s hand in so many ways while at SBA, in big details such as the Silverdale Center and the smallest details in the lives of students. This space is so important as it provides our students the platform to present what they have often worked tirelessly towards. The shy become bold, the introverted become friends, and everyone has a place at the table. “The Silverdale Center is a long-dreamed-of blessing from the Lord! Imagine having the baseball team only practice on the infield with no bats until the week of their game. This is what our Arts students did year after year. What a blessing for them to be able to rehearse on the stage all semester and for backdrops, sets, and costumes to be able to be brought in before the week of the shows. To top all that off, we were able to fly Mary and Bert on our own fly lines with equipment that was installed two weeks before we opened! None of this would have been possible without ample time on our own stage! To GOD be the glory - great things HE has done!”

Mary Poppins

What the over 1500 audience members experienced inside the Creekside Theater during the three performances on April 8 & 9, 2022, was so much more than a production of Disney and Cameron Mackintosh’s Mary Poppins: The Broadway Musical!

This production was years in the making - years of vision, dreams, plans, and details. From the moment the Lord birthed the idea of the Silverdale Center until Mary’s final flight closing night, God was at work in and through His people. It all started with our Head of School’s vision for the Silverdale Center, through the planning stages and what felt like endless details of putting a theater together from the ground up, many hours of planning and rehearsing, to the installation of the fly system, ended with God being glorified in and through our students. And honestly, the shows themselves played only a small part of it all.

“For Such a Time as This” God’s glory was on display. Not because the acting was superb (even though it was), not because Mary and Bert soared through the air (and we cried), but through the way the cast interacted with each other and the adults around them. It’s because of the way they spoke to and loved each other, because of the way they used their talents and gifts to come together to create something much larger than they each could have imagined on their own.

A Fond Farewell

In every stone building, one stone is crucial. It is laid first, and it is to ensure that the building is square and stable. It is the rock upon which the weight of the entire structure rests. It is the cornerstone. Here we are, 23 years into the mission God has planned for our Academy and nothing is more precious than our Cornerstone, Christ himself and those he chose to lead the way. He chose leaders. He hand selected true believers that He could entrust to begin and grow His mission.

Those are the individuals we want to recognize through the Cornerstone Society. Today we’d like to stop and recognize our Cornerstones with the introduction of our new Cornerstone Society. This new society is being established to honor those with 20+ years of service. To say thank you to those who have been a key player in the foundation and growth of Silverdale Baptist Academy.

Autism Awareness

National Autism Awareness Month raises awareness for autism and Asperger’s syndrome during April. Autism is a complex brain disorder that often inhibits a person’s ability to communicate, respond to surroundings, and form relationships with others. Silverdale supports, educates, and turns blue to bring better awareness and acceptance to autism.

An Exemplary School Exemplary accreditation requires a school to demonstrate that they have met forty additional demanding and specific criteria above the usual accreditation standards.

These criteria include the areas of governance, executive leadership, school viability, student learning, spiritual development, and school culture. Allow me to put it in perspective, if the title “Exemplary Accredited” isn’t doing it for you.

ACSI accredits over 23,000 institutions just like ours all over the globe, assuring that families who sacrificially provide for their child to experience a private Christian education receive the maximum return on their investment. And it most certainly is an investment, wouldn’t you agree?

Seven team members from different Christian schools across the country spent three days on our campus. They concluded that SBA had satisfied the requirements to be re-accredited under ACSI, but had also gone above and beyond the standards to become Exemplary Accredited something only 18 institutions worldwide can currently boast. That’s 0.07%, in case you’re a numbers person.

I want you all to know that as your Head of School, in all of the hustle and bustle of running an academic institution, I just had to take a moment to stand silent in awe of what the Lord is doing here at 7236 Bonny Oaks Drive in Chattanooga, Tennessee. He’s taken some of the finest, most passionate people and brought them together under one roof to serve you and your children.

Whether it’s in discipleship, the classroom, performances, competition, or elsewhere. I want you to know just how blessed we all are here at Silverdale Baptist Academy.

Our Annual Gala was back “in person” in our new Silverdale Center on March 4, 2022. What better way to have celebrated than with our theme “Throwback Prom.” Our gala chairs, Chad and Christina Toombs Wilson (opposite, lower left), knocked it out of the park with this theme, as our participants came fully engrossed with big hair, lots of sparkle, and puffy sleeves. Huge shoutout to David Karnes for being our emcee for the night. Both our live and silent auctions were successful. We are grateful for our partnerships that helped set the stage for a rewarding event. Our gala raised over $150,000 for our Need–Based Financial Aid Fund and paying down the debt of the Silverdale Center. We were blessed to serve alongside many of our students who truly understand the meaning of servanthood and worked constantly into the wee hours of the morning helping clean up. All for His Glory!

Pink Out For the past four years, our high school volleyball team has hosted a Pink Out match benefiting The MaryEllen Locher Scholarship fund. We have donated over $6,000 to this local organization that awards college scholarships to children whose parents have been affected by breast cancer!

The families, students, teachers, and administration have always shown whole-hearted support for this cause.

Wreaths Across Chattanooga 8th-grade history classes sold Veterans Day t-shirts to raise money for Wreaths Across Chattanooga this past November, with artwork designed by 8thgrader Braden Wilson. The mission of Wreaths Across Chattanooga is to lay a wreath on every grave at the Chattanooga National Cemetery.

Each shirt covered the cost of one $10 wreath, and sales and donations totaled an incredible $5,405!

PRESCHOOL OUTDOOR EDUCATION

Throughout the past year, in our Early Education program students were exposed to the outdoors almost every day! Freed from playground constraints, kids build strength, develop self- confidence, and learn to manage risks as they trip, stumble, fall, hurt, and right themselves.

We educate the whole child through the use of God’s creation as a powerful teaching tool. Through hands-on experiences children explore, create, and connect with the world around them in ways that are just not possible indoors.

PRESCHOOL CELEBRATION Our Pre-K 4 and Pre-K 5 year old students did an amazing job celebrating all they accomplished in 2021-2022. The students, their teachers, and Mrs. Pam, our Preschool Music teacher, filled the audience with happiness during the End-of-theYear Celebration performance. The highlight was having Lydia Werner ‘22, an SBA senior who began in Preschool and who also played Mary Poppins in the first high school musical in The Silverdale Center.

Lydia sang “Let’s Go Fly a Kite” as we challenged parents to take their children to fly their very own kite this summer. It was truly a heartfelt experience.

OUTDOOR EDUCATION AT ITS BEST

Outdoor spaces at school offer students key opportunities to learn, problem solve, and mentally refresh – ultimately benefiting both education and mental health. These benefits occur through four key areas of interaction with the natural environment: outdoor education, outdoor play, outdoor experience, and outdoor exposure.

A growing body of research clearly illustrates improvements to mood, stress levels, and academic achievement through outdoor learning. One study shows that being outdoors for classes can help more active or assertive students better control their emotions, while another indicated more open communication with teachers, notably from children with more closed personalities. Natural play areas have been shown to promote positive moods, reduced stress and anger, and lower rates of depression. Self-led exploration, manipulation, and discovery during play promotes imagination and progresses with age. This type of play – and involuntary learning – is critical to students’ ability to navigate social interactions.

Leaving a place better than we found it is one of SBA’s responsibilities to our Academy, to our community, and to our world. By placing a recycle bin in every classroom and office, our Outdoor Education classes rotate emptying the bins.

In the 2021-2022 school year alone, SBA recycled over 16 tons!

In addition to our recycling program, we partner with NewTerra Composting.

Compostable products from the lunchroom are now converted to compost that can be used in gardens and other areas. This has significantly reduced our lunchroom waste, as trash cans are nearly empty after every lunch period. Last year we composted over five and a half tons!

Make Your Summer Count Silverdale Summer Camps had another record-breaking season with over 1,200 registrations for a total of 62 camps offered! With camp offerings for ages preschool through high school, we also added twelve brand-new camp options this past summer.

If you’ve been a part of Silverdale Summer Camps before, you also know that our outdoor camps help make us unique, and they sell out fast! There are outdoor options like fishing, mountain biking, archery, gardening, and more.

We’re not about entertaining or babysitting children while mom and dad are at work. We’re about providing experiences and creating memories that will last a lifetime, all while pouring Jesus into them!

SILVERDALE ONLINE ACADEMY Silverdale Baptist Academy’s core values are discipleship, excellence, and integrity, and Silverdale realizes the importance of a Biblical worldview taught throughout their curriculum and now is offering the same education worldwide with the launch of Silverdale Online Academy.

Silverdale Online offers a rigorous curriculum that is Christcentered and with the flexibility to fit within your family’s busy schedule. Your child can work at their own pace and have their schedule tailored to their unique needs. Silverdale Online is fully accredited by Cognia and is a member of ACSI. SOA offers standard, Honors, AP, and Dual Credit courses.

As of this past year, the qualified staff at Silverdale Homeschool are available to assist families who aspire to meet the graduation requirements set forth by the Tennessee Department of Education while homeschooling their children. There are many umbrella schools available online, but Silverdale Homeschool is the only in-person umbrella school in Chattanooga. This past summer’s launch of Silverdale Homeschool with the Silverdale Homeschool Fair brought in 32 vendors and over 300 guests!
