Dear Reader, There is so much potential in the present moment. Every day is full of choices, from what we eat for breakfast to how we handle problems to how we greet our family after a long day in the office. Some of these choices may seem inconsequential, and many of them certainly do not feel like a big deal as we are choosing them. But however large or small they are, they each have the potential to have a much greater effect than you thought possible.

How many of us can pinpoint a choice, made by us personally or by a parent or maybe even someone you never met, that ended up completely altering the course of your life for the better? Perhaps your parents decided to turn right on Silver Bay Road during an annual road trip just to see what was down that road. Or maybe a family friend told you about the summer jobs that were available and you decided to check it out. Or perhaps your great-grandparents were the ones to discover this gem along Lake George and Silver Bay has been in your heart since childhood. It is truly breathtaking to consider.

Just as these choices have led us

to where we are today, so too will today’s choices shape what the next day, the next week, or the next 100 years will be. It cannot be avoided: our decisions today, whether made subconsciously or intentionally, have the power to affect our future selves, our children’s lives as they find their way in the world, and possibly many more people you don’t know.

In this issue, you will find stories of individuals, families and friends in the Silver Bay community that reflect on how the choices and moments we make today can shape not just our own lives but also the futures of the people and places we hold dear. We hope these stories will not only inspire you to celebrate the experiences that have brought each of us to where we are today, but also encourage you to think about the countless opportunities that we have now to make the future better for those we love. These opportunities, however small they are, exist in every choice we make throughout each minute, each hour, each day.

It is true that choice can sometimes seem daunting or something to fear, but it is my hope that these stories will help you to see how marvelous it is to recognize the good borne out of

past choices and how extraordinary it is that we have the opportunity now to make our lives, our loved ones’ lives, and our world better.

This year, we celebrate 120 years of Silver Bay YMCA, in gratitude to a man named Luther Wishard who chose to pursue a vision of what could be on the shores of Lake George. We celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Helen Hughes Memorial Chapel and those who, in their grief, decided to honor the memory of a woman whose own choices had a profound impact on those around her. We celebrate each and every person who has chosen to support Silver Bay in the past 100 years so that we can have such profound experiences here today. And we celebrate all those who will continue to support Silver Bay so that our mission to foster relationships, strengthen communities and nurture spirit, mind and body for all will continue for the next 100 years.

PAUL NASRANI - TRUSTEE Paul’s professional experience includes: Audit management as a CPA at BDO Seidman, serving as COO for a dental services start up, and CFO of mid-market companies which conducted significant capital and acquisition transactions.

served as a summer Emp managing The Store from 2004-2006. Paul and his wife Simi celebrated part of their wedding weekend in Morse Hall and for the past eight years, he and his family have enjoyed summer vacations at Silver Bay.

His personal Silver Bay experiences began as a child on family vacations to Silver Bay. In 2004, he departed from a career in finance to found Adirondack Creamery at Silver Bay and

BETH WHITAKER - TRUSTEE Beth Whitaker is a professor of political science and executive director of the Office of Interdisciplinary Studies at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. Her research focuses on migration and security issues, especially in sub-Saharan Africa, and she has written two books and 30 journal articles. With funding

from two Fulbright awards and other grants, Beth has lived and conducted research in Tanzania and Kenya.

Beth has been coming to Silver Bay all her life. An Emp from 1988 to 1993, she worked as a children’s leader and lifeguard and served as Emp Council president. She and Jason Giersch were married in Helen Hughes Memorial Chapel in 2006.

CAROLYN WESTER - TRUSTEE Carolyn Wester is an experienced marketing and communications professional. For 14 years, she was responsible for leading the marketing, communication, and branding strategy for the MetroWest YMCA, and engaging with over 30,000 members and community stakeholders.

Carolyn is currently the Culture and Engagement Communications Manager at BAE Systems. In this role, she focuses understanding BAE Systems’ mission, cultural principles, leadership behaviors, diversity and inclusion goals. Carolyn’s love of Silver Bay is endless, and she is excited to serve on the Board.

A MESSAGE FROM THE CVO THE NEXT 100 YEARS In 2016, the Board of Trustees began a strategic planning process based on the work of David La Piana and outlined in his book, “Nonprofit Strategy Revolution, Real-Time Strategic Planning in a RapidResponse World”. Our long-term visioning and strategy development needed to adapt to a rapidly changing world by being a living, breathing document discussed and monitored at every scheduled board meeting. Updates to the plan happen more frequently in 1-2 year cycles compared to 3-5 year cycles in the past.

When I first joined Silver Bay’s Board of Trustees in 2008, I was impressed with the foresight demonstrated by trustees as a Master Site Plan was considered for Silver Bay’s campus.

An architectural consulting firm was engaged to study our campus and recommend a 100-year campus plan to ensure that leadership took a long-term view in campus decision making. That plan was adopted by the Board of Trustees in 2009 and guided the decision to build the William Boyd Center.

We are seven years into using this model for Silver Bay’s strategic planning. It enabled our organization to adapt to the pandemic. Your Board of Trustees is currently working in partnership with Peter Doliber, our CEO, to move our plan forward with strategies to increase our program offerings, expand our reach, and engage more people to experience Silver Bay. The pandemic reminded us that Silver Bay is not just a place; it is being in relationship with others.

We demonstrated that with some of our spiritual life programs moving online when we were not able to gather in person.

Silver Bay’s current Board of Trustees continues the tradition of longterm planning that brings together our Strategic Plan and Master Site Plan in our decision making. You will be hearing from Peter on new programs, continued upgrades to our campus, and further outreach to our community (both local and virtual) as we make our Strategic Plan our reality to achieve our mission: To foster relationships, strengthen communities and nurture spirit, mind, and body for all.

I hope you will join my excitement for what the future holds for each one of us, our families, and future generations at Silver Bay as we plan for tomorrow with our decisions today.

A MESSAGE FROM THE CEO THE NEXT 100 YEARS

that continues to impact countless numbers of people around the world. From the early days of YMCA and YWCA leadership training, to Boy Scouts, to a boy’s school, to today’s Spiritual Life Center, various respite ministries, youth services, conferences, and family retreats, the lives touched by Silver Bay persist and grow, despite what circumstances may arise.

When I was about twenty five, my grandmother gave me a small cloth pouch, smaller than a thumbnail.

“Go on, open it,” she encouraged.

It weighed nearly nothing and I couldn’t understand what could be in something so small, nor why it was so important to her. I placed the unsewn end carefully over the palm of my open hand and out slipped something gold and shiny. “That belonged to my father,” she said.

It was an 1834 dollar gold piece, a gift from her father that had come from his father, uncirculated, looking just as it did, I imagine, when my great, great grandfather had it. “It’s to dream on,” she said. “Hold your dreams tight and have faith that all things will work out for good.”

To share a dream and make it a vision takes courage and conviction.

Luther Wishard was such a person.

He envisioned a location where people could be taught how to serve others though love and self sacrifice.

He had the conviction to approach, without introduction or information, Silas Paine, the owner of the property that is now Silver Bay, and share his vision accompanied by an ask for Paine to support it. Wishard could not have known that Paine desired his abundant resources to be put to this precise use.

Today, some 120 years later, we sit on the same property; the product of one person’s courageous vision.

And it is a lively and dynamic vision

As we look to the next 100 years, we stand on the shoulders of those whose accomplishments outlast their presence because of their vision. Our vision is built on theirs. Their work allows us to be bold and seek new ways to serve others.

Having only had the privilege of being here since January, I continue to be amazed by the firmness of our foundation and the current dedication of those who work, lead, steward, and serve Silver Bay. And in the past few months, more than once I have thought of that coin and heard my grandmother’s voice, “all things will work for good”. Our work is just beginning even as we celebrate where it all began. I look forward to working together as we build on the vision that is Silver Bay.

A PLACE OF HEALING THE NEXT 100 YEARS

forward every summer to spending many mornings in the Spiritual Life Tent, sharing life experiences with members of the Silver Bay community.

When Denise and I decided to get married, there was no other place than Silver Bay. In September 2013, we were married at Slim Point, surrounded by the beauty of Silver Bay and the love and support of our family and friends. Bruce officiated our beautiful, personal, and sentimental ceremony.

Silver Bay is a place of healing. I was brought to Silver Bay in 2009

by Denise Carter. I was in great need of spiritual, emotional, and physical healing at the time, after a motorcycle accident in the summer of 2007. Silver Bay did just that and more.

The beauty of Silver Bay is obvious, but the spiritual energy for me is what drew me in the most. It is like being in a different world, where staff and guests are friendlier, kinder, genuinely caring, and more loving.

good, and the LOVE people have for Silver Bay is incredible.

My first memory of Silver Bay is of worship on Sunday morning in the auditorium. I remember feeling overwhelmed with gratitude for being in such a beautiful place. After worship, Rev. Bruce Tamlyn came and sat with us. Since then, I have spent many hours talking with Bruce, who helped me navigate so many major life decisions. Vespers is one of my favorite experiences at Silver Bay and in the summer of 2021, I had the honor of leading vespers. I look

I had the honor of volunteering as the cashier in The Store for three weeks last summer, and to me, what happened in the Store is a small example of the greater Silver Bay community. With staff shortages due to COVID, there was not enough staff to keep The Store open for the summer season, but the Silver Bay community responded. Five nights a week, people enthusiastically volunteered to scoop ice cream so the Store could remain open. The love of the Silver Bay community continues to inspire me and I am grateful to be a part of this amazing place.

A COMMON PURPOSE THE NEXT 100 YEARS

She is currently working in the kitchen/dining room and looking forward to the Store being open full time again where she can get back to greeting the early rising guests with coffee, crepes, and a big smile! I, as skipper of the Silver Spirit, get to introduce or reacquaint our guests to the beauty of Lake George.

An important cornerstone of Silver Bay YMCA has for many years been family history and family traditions.

In the case of the Huntington family, it all began when my father attended the Silver Bay Boys School in 192324 and was an Emp those summers.

Dad returned in ’44 for a vacation with his very young family, but it wasn’t until 1961-62 that my sister, Carol, and I enjoyed the life changing Emp experience. Now I knew I wanted to get back to Silver Bay! My wife, Barb, was introduced to The Bay and Lake George through attending the Presbyterian Youth Conference. Three of her brothers, Dale, Bob, and Ted Shuster, were Emps starting in 1968. We enjoyed two memorable vacations, the summers of ’74 and ’75 when the Huntingtons and the Shusters

were able to rent the historic “Doc McConaghy cottage” (now the summer retreat of Bob and Lee Woodruff). Here our children Heather and Marty began walking the stone walls, and our youngest, Bob, took his first steps on that spacious front porch, under which my dad claims he and his Boys School buddies would hide and smoke cigarettes! In ’89 Marty started her Emp life, and Bob followed in ’91. Heather’s family has vacationed numerous years at The Bay. 1989 was also a pivotal year for Barb and I because, having just moved to Colorado, we decided it was time to get back to Silver Bay much more regularly. We have returned every year. Barb got tired of being referred to as “Marty’s mom” or “Ted’s sister” and decided she needed to establish her own identity.

It has not been difficult to make the long annual trip east to Silver Bay! There are several things that draw us back year after year. We enjoy the atmosphere of a common purpose and a sense of contributing to the success and continuity of a “home away from home” that provides relaxation, unity, and a healing environment for so many people in various situations and stages of life. Our western friends are always asking if we are “going back to the camp again,” and we take pleasure in explaining the many unique ways Silver Bay YMCA and Lake George can be more accurately described.

The conversation can go on as long as they have time to listen!

Each early season brings the excitement of new challenges and improving on previous efforts, and we are looking forward to both during summer of ’22!

A DIFFERENT KIND OF JOY THE NEXT 100 YEARS

It all started with Christine’s church coming to Silver Bay with the Lutheran Summer Conference back in the early 70s. She brought me (Marc) and our son, William, along in 1994 for the first time when he was just a baby. All three of our kids have loved the kid’s programs, Wee Woozles through Chippies. The Conference became the gathering. One spring two of our children, Chris and Elena, saw the post for Tidy Time. They

became members of the Council and pulled me in a year later as well. We found a different kind of joy. It’s great to come on a vacation here and just escape from everything and let the waters wash your troubles away, but it’s a different kind of enjoyment working on the Council and helping out from time to time to keep things up. The Council works hard twice a year maintaining the trails and the water bars, spreading mulch, ripping

up the overgrowth that blocks the paths or pops up in corners the mower can’t get to; little things that help to keep this place looking nice for the next group of people to enjoy. The stress of six day work weeks, featuring long days of going in before the sun and leaving long after the sunset in the summer, were always quickly relieved by a day or two at Silver Bay and allowed some rest to a weary mind and soul. Silver Bay took on a different importance again as we started gardening, housekeeping, or scooping ice cream at The Store. We had the pleasure of helping at the Golf Tournament as well. During our time at Silver Bay we have seen many faces change.

We know someday we won’t be here either, but hopefully with our help, and a lot of others, the Inn and the Trails and Slim Point will still remain for generations to come.

SHAPING TOMORROW, TODAY THE NEXT 100 YEARS

wouldn’t have met my husband and I would have never come to love Silver Bay.” I also think, “What if I said no to the invitation to become a Trustee?

If I had said no, I would have missed out on connections that I’ve made with other Trustees and Staff and I wouldn’t have been a part of such an important decision to bring Peter on-board as our new CEO.” What if?

But those paths have been chosen, and taken for face value, some may seem small and insignificant choices, but they had a significant impact on my present and future happiness.

Choices and the future are two very uncertain things. We ask ourselves, what choice do I make today that will affect my future, your future, our children’s future, our grandchildren’s future, and so on. We pine on the day-to-day decisions that we make wondering if we are making an impact, hoping that we are making the right decision. While we can’t predict our future, we can make the choices today that can positively affect our future, choices on how we will interact with the world. We have the choice to be kind, the choice

to be welcoming, the choice to be accepting, and the choice to be bold.

My family and I have been watching a series on Disney+ called “What if...?” This series changes one detail in the Marvel Avengers Universe and askes, “What would happen if...?” It shows that one choice can alter the trajectory of so many events in time, same as the ripple effect. When I reflect on the choices I have made that have brought me to Silver Bay, I question, “What if I didn’t go to that holiday party twelve years ago? I

Individually, we should ask ourselves, “How can I help?” You may have doubts because you are just one person, but that is all we need. If you choose to live our mission, then your choice makes Silver Bay a warmer, kinder, safer, and more accepting place for all. Your choice is the drop that ripples through time, positively impacting your life, Silver Bay, and the world. Choose kindness, choose acceptance, and choose to be bold, because these are the choices that shape us, shape Silver Bay, and will impact us for another 100 years.

THINKING BEYOND OURSELVES THE NEXT 100 YEARS

There is something magical about Silver Bay that just draws people to it. I felt it when I first stepped on the ERC the summer of 2021 and I felt it this January when I returned.

people to think beyond themselves, to see the needs of the people around them, and reach out a helping hand. I saw this in myself after I left the Bay, this drive to pour into the community around me, ultimately leading me back here. But this magic, as it were, is clearly found in the people who work here, who call Silver Bay their home, and push younger generations to stand up and advocate for those around them.

After working this past summer, I found myself wanting to do more.

I had this passion for people and helping those around me, which was instilled in me after a summer of putting others first. This led me back to Lake George, the WBC, and Inspiration Point. Silver Bay has inspired people like me to live a life where I can help shape future generations and working at the Bay helps fulfill this.

Silver Bay has a long standing tradition of bringing in summer employees from all across the country and even the globe, giving them opportunities and experiences that can only be found on Lake George. It is through this tradition that they are instilling into the future generations the importance of inclusivity of all people and advocacy for their surrounding community.

Whether this community is in Mexico or the hallways of Parlin, Silver Bay has a tradition of opening its doors to all and making this place a safe refuge that welcomes, includes, and loves all.

Working at Silver Bay YMCA this past summer created a catalyst for my future, one where I hope to positively change and advocate for the community around me. For now, this looks like working at the Silver Bay YMCA Teen Center in Ticonderoga, but the future is open and the possibilities that the Bay provides are endless.

the essentials are in place, the Teen Center will begin welcoming teens and we will continue to build up our activities until our program is 100% staffed and running at full operation, which we expect will be at the start of the 2022/2023 school year in September.

A few teens sporting their Teen Center shirts, pre-COVID. Silver Bay is delighted that the Silver Bay YMCA Ticonderoga Teen Center is reopening this spring after a two year hiatus. As many of our supporters of the Teen Center know, we made the difficult decision to close this program in March 2020 due to several factors, the primary one being the COVID-19 pandemic.

We have been working with leaders in the Town of Ticonderoga on the best path forward towards restarting this program, and with COVID cases on the decline we are at last able to resume our impactful teen program.

Both Silver Bay YMCA and the Town of Ti have been working diligently to put all the pieces in place for the Teen Center to resume its activities in the Armory, the brick structure that has housed the Teen Center since 2013. This work includes everything from coordinating shared space of the Armory gym with other town-run community programs to purchasing and moving equipment and furniture back into the space.

These many tasks, combined with a prolonged search to fully staff the Teen Center, are no small feat. Once

Prior to its closure in March 2020, the Teen Center was on track to break attendance records with an average of 70% of local teens visiting the Teen Center on a regular basis.

With excitement building in the teen community around the Teen Center’s reopening, we are hopeful to achieve these numbers and resume the extraordinary impact embedded in these statistics once we are at full operation.

The Silver Bay YMCA Ticonderoga Teen Center is 100% donor supported and we are immensely grateful to all who have and will continue to support this important program. We are excited to be both your partner and the partner of the Town of Ticonderoga to provide this safe space for local youth to learn, recreate and realize their fullest potential.

SILVER BAY TEEN CENTER A VISION FOR THE FUTURE

In preparation for the reopening of the Silver Bay YMCA Ticonderoga Teen Center, a task force of staff developed a Teen Center-specific vision for the program’s future. We are excited to resume our impact on the teens of Ticonderoga and make this vision a reality!

OUR TEEN CENTER MISSION & DESIRED IMPACT MISSION: To provide local youth with a safe space to connect with their community, to engage in opportunities to grow and the freedom to be themselves.

IMPACT: Because of the Silver Bay YMCA Ticonderoga Teen Center, local youth grow in their self-respect and have stronger relationships with themselves, their peers and their families. Teens model the Y core values of caring, honesty, respect, responsibility and inclusion. As a result, they make healthy life choices, connect with others and engage in activities that positively impact their community.

OUR TEEN CENTER COMMITMENT We recognize that every young person has a story. We are committed to meeting our teens where they are at with compassion, patience and understanding.

We recognize that every young person has a choice. We are committed to encouraging positive life choices and outlining clear expectations and consequences for those within the program.

We recognize that every young person has a right to feel safe, cared for and included. We are committed to being role models, reflecting and living the YMCA’s core values of caring, honesty, respect, responsibility and inclusion.

COMMUNITY OUTREACH FOSTERING RELATIONSHIPS

RESPITE PROGRAMS Silver Bay YMCA hosts four community respite programs throughout each year: Pastoral Respite, Cancer Respite, Military R&R, and Vacations Made Possible. These programs provide families with the opportunity to connect with each other and enjoy a stay at Silver Bay YMCA free of charge.

Silver Bay YMCA’s community outreach programs are made possible by the generous donors who give to the Fund for Silver Bay. Thank you for helping families reconnect through your generosity!

My husband and I were blessed with the opportunity to stay at Silver Bay in the fall of 2021 through their Cancer Respite Program. It was the perfect retreat from the stress and anxiety that goes with being a cancer patient and caregiver. We were able to take many walks on the lovely grounds and the leaves were still colorful in late October. The staff members were warm and welcoming and the food was delicious! We had a beautiful view of Lake George from our hotel room and each day brought relaxation and rejuvenation to us. My husband was able to let go of his worries and enjoy nature during our three day stay. This was a welcome reprieve from his cancer treatment. The Cancer Respite Program is a gift to patients and their family members who need normalcy, fun and space from their serious health challenges.

Silver Bay was there for us at a time when we really needed sanctuary and support. We will always remember this wonderful experience.

YOUTH AND GOVERNMENT Youth and Government is a national YMCA program that gives students the opportunity to learn about—and experience—government policies and methodologies firsthand. At Silver Bay, program attendees wrote briefs, prepared bills, and participated in debates.

In February, more than sixty students from seven local high schools took part in Youth and Government, a model-government program which had been unable to meet in person for the last two years due to the pandemic. Students from Bolton, Minerva, Newcomb, North Warren, Johnsburg, Ticonderoga and Queensbury schools participated in the all-day conference.

“After two years of operating this program remotely due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it was so great to have everyone back together at Silver Bay,” said Jackie Palandrani, Silver Bay YMCA Youth and Teen Director, who leads the program for District Three, which covers the North Country down to Queensbury.

“Youth and Government is full of excited kids with great ideas who enjoy learning. They will use the skills they are practicing here in their own communities,” continued Palandrani.

COMMUNITY OUTREACH CREATING COMMUNITY

CREATING BREASTFEEDING FRIENDLY COMMUNITIES This past fall, Silver Bay YMCA received a grant from the New York State Department of Health to create breastfeeding friendly areas on our campus. With the resources from this grant, Silver Bay created two spaces to use as mother’s rooms to provide an accommodating space available for employees and guests to nurse and pump. The spaces, located in Gullen Lounge and the Children’s Pavilion, have comfortable furniture, visuals, and accessories needed for breastfeeding. All resources obtained from the grant are listed below.

MISSION OF THE MONTH In October 2021, staff at Silver Bay YMCA began a Mission of the Month program, led by Human Resources Director Kelsey Nobis. The program encourages the staff to come together for community outreach. Each month is focused on a different area of need that staff can collect for or donate to.

“Part of our mission here at Silver Bay is to strengthen communities,” says Nobis. “We began our Mission of the Month program to help some of the people who need it most in our surrounding areas. Each month there will be certain items we will be collecting, donating, or volunteering for projects in the community.”

THE LABYRINTH:

AN ANCIENT TOOL PROVIDING A PATH INTO THE FUTURE members from a variety of different departments and community members and pastoral respite guests who pitched in to help. We were able to finish the project on a crisp and sunny autumn afternoon.

The labyrinth looked absolutely stunning and will be ready for our guests after the snow has melted and spring returns to Silver Bay.

Ashley and I came to Silver Bay for the first time in spring 2018. We were guests in the Pastoral Respite Ministry and heard about the opening for a new Spiritual Life Director. As we considered whether or not we would explore this opportunity, we walked the labyrinth together and prayed for God’s guidance. From that beautiful location near Slim Point, we felt that we would indeed take the steps necessary to pursue this position. By mid-June, I had joined the staff at Silver Bay! In 2018 and 2019, I learned about the labyrinth from Betty and John Towey and joined them for many walks. There were walks on a canvas labyrinth in the Fischer Gym Dance Studio, walks in the sun with a refreshing at the outdoor labyrinth; and even a walk at the ERC under the glimmering full moon. These walks helped me to grow in my faith and to hear what others would share about their sacred experiences of walking the labyrinth.

In the fall of 2019, I became a labyrinth facilitator through Veriditas, a

world-wide labyrinth organization that brought its training program to Silver Bay YMCA. With the arrival of the Covid-19 pandemic, Betty and I implemented hand-held labyrinth walks over Zoom for members of the Silver Bay Community and beyond.

We occasionally facilitated labyrinth walks for respite and conference guests as well. The summer of 2021 was particularly exciting as we led two walks per week at the outdoor labyrinth. We had a wonderful mix of first-time walkers and those who returned to participate in the labyrinth program year after year.

The labyrinth experience touches people in many different ways and we have heard numerous stories of growth and transformation from those who participate.

Last fall, the outdoor labyrinth was in desperate need of maintenance.

There were weeds that needed to be pulled, mulch that needed to be scattered, and pavers that needed to be reset. After communicating this need to the broader Silver Bay community, nearly 20 people came to help us. There were Silver Bay staff

The labyrinth is an ancient meditation tool that has been used by many different religious traditions all over the world. It has one path to the center and one path to return, each path is full of twists and turns. As one walks the labyrinth it can be reminiscent of the journey of life. Metaphors like this help us to learn while we walk the labyrinth, providing us with space to process the past, to live in the moment, and to dream about the future.

I am grateful to the Silver Bay Community who had the vision to bring the labyrinth here over twenty years ago. I am honored to walk the labyrinth here and employ it as one of the indispensable practices in the Spiritual Life Program. The labyrinth is a valuable tool that we can continue to use to “build a healthy spirit, mind, and body for all.” I believe that the labyrinth will continue to play a vital role in the Silver Bay community as we faithfully step into the future!

HELEN HUGHES MEMORIAL CHAPEL Those of us who have spent time at Silver Bay may pass the Helen Hughes Memorial Chapel with the feeling that it has always been there. It seems as timeless as the mountains behind it, but we will actually be celebrating its 100th anniversary this year—one hundred and twenty years since the founding of Silver Bay. The Chapel has a simple and organic beauty, yet in spite of its simplicity, the variety of experiences shared there have been as rich, warm, and meaningful as the colors of the stained glass windows above the altar. Moreover, the light that the Chapel has brought to so many would seem to be symbolized by the clear side windows which grace its walls.

We hold gratitude for those maintenance staff who have replaced lights, maintained the heat, repaired the pews, and fixed the windows.

We recall the countless number of concerts that have filled the Chapel with music and warmed the hearts of many, and we have such gratitude for all who have performed.

We think of the sermons that have been preached and the pastors who preached them.

We remember the infinite number of memorial services with families who have grieved and celebrated the lives of loved ones. And we recall the 227 families, who have laid the ashes of their loved ones in the Memorial Garden.

We hold prayerfully the endless number of individuals who have come to the Chapel seeking quiet, solitude, forgiveness, transformation, renewal, peace, reconciliation, and presence with the Divine.

We think of those that have offered tears of sadness, or

We can picture those who came to the Chapel to place a flower, a stone, a note, a leaf or a twig on the altar as an offering, a prayer, a petition, a hope, an appeal to the Divine.

We affirm that there have been many who have come to forgive— to forgive another person or to forgive themselves.

We can be assured that many came to feel the love of the Divine, maybe for the first time.

For 100 years, the Chapel has been a haven for those who came in search of faith, hope, love, mercy, peace, and grace. Do you find yourself anywhere on this page? No matter what brought you to the Chapel, please know that you are part of the history and on-going story of this sacred place.

The Helen Hughes Memorial Chapel has served the needs of an endless number of individuals, couples, and families. Throughout its time, the core message of the Helen Hughes Memorial Chapel has always been the love of God, the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the presence of the Holy Spirit.

Improvements such as the installation of a hearing loop system, the upgrade of our heating and cooling system, and the

re-carpeting and extension of the altar are just a few of the enhancements that will ensure this cherished space will continue to bring generations of families and loved ones together for many years to come.

Anyone who visits the Helen Hughes Memorial Chapel may read the inscription on a prominent plaque, “This Chapel was erected in loving memory of Helen Hughes, 18921920.” Who was Helen Hughes?

Helen Hughes was the daughter of the Secretary of State and later on the Chief Justice of the United States, Charles Evans Hughes and his wife, Antoinette Carter Hughes.

Helen was deeply interested in the Christian student activities of Silver Bay. She was a graduate of

Vassar College, Class of 1914, and a member of the National Board of the YWCA, 1916-1919. While working in Boston in the fall of 1918, she fell ill with influenza, which was followed by pneumonia and advanced tuberculosis. She passed away on April 18, 1920 at the age of 28.

By August 1920, the Silver Bay Board of Trustees approved plans for the Helen Hughes Memorial Chapel and pledged its cooperation to secure a chapel on the Silver Bay campus.

With funds raised largely by Mrs.

C.C. Michener, wife of Silver Bay’s Executive Director (1917-1922), and designs by Boston architectural firm Allen and Collens, plans for the beautiful stone chapel materialized.

The granite stones used in building the chapel came from the nearby hillsides, and the cornerstone was laid by Helen’s mother on June 19, 1921. Taking part that day were a large choir of Vassar women all wearing white dresses worn in honor of Helen.

One year later, with her parents in attendance, the completed Helen Hughes Memorial Chapel was dedicated on June 25, 1922.

Helen’s dying wish was to come to Silver Bay one more time. Sadly, her declining health made that trip impossible. How grateful we, along with the tens of thousands of people who have come to the Chapel over the past hundred years, are for the life of Helen Hughes. Her belief in a life dedicated to the service of others lives on in the mission and work of Silver Bay.

BENITA REITER - BAKER I knew from a very young age that I wanted to be a baker. I remember wanting an Easy Bake Oven for Christmas so badly, but instead my mom told me “Nope, we have an oven in the kitchen.” That’s when I started making everything in my Grandpa’s old recipe box; his Snickerdoodles are my favorite thing to make. Professionally, I started

my baking career at Gambles Bakery and I was an apprentice for 5 years, I continue to learn and grow every day. I love what I do because I love the joy I am able to bring to people.

I love the smile a cookie I made can bring to someone’s face. I am really looking forward to my career here at Silver Bay and the opportunities that wait.

JACE BANKS - CONFERENCE SET UP ASSOCIATE I was born and raised in Chicago, IL and I am currently working at Silver Bay as the CSU Associate! I’ve really enjoyed my time here so far.

I was introduced to SilverBay by a close friend and current employee.

Outside of my job, I am a musician and currently the owner of a Chicago

based artist management label. I also have experience with leadership and teambuilding. Before Silver Bay I worked as a unit supervisor at a residential camp in Wisconsin. I look forward to my first summer here and cannot wait to enjoy more of the outdoors!

JESSICA SCHMELING - HOSPITALITY SUPERVISOR I am from Nederland, Colorado and I recently joined the Silver Bay Team in Hospitality Services. My Silver Bay experience began back in 2003 in Housekeeping and continued through ’04, ’05, and part of ’06.

MADDY ENGLESMAN - TEEN CENTER ATTENDANT & CAMP REGISTRAR Maddy works at the Ticonderoga Teen Center as an attendant. She first came to Silver Bay the summer of 2021 and worked at Silver Camp as a Children’s Leader. She is currently a senior at Eastern Michigan University, where she is majoring in Foundations of Special Education and British & American Literature. Once she graduates in May, Maddy is excited to start her career at Silver Bay!

Maddy is from Metro-Detroit Michigan, where she grew up camping with her family in the Upper Peninsula and swimming in Lake Michigan. Maddy loves traveling and exploring new places, she is excited to explore New York State and other areas on the East Coast while living here. During her free time she enjoys watching true crime shows and knitting, but also loves hiking and hammocking. Maddy is excited for the upcoming months at the Bay and ready for the summer!

CARLOS ORTIZ - TEEN CENTER ATTENDANT & AQUATICS DIRECTOR My name is Carlos L. Ortiz Jr. I was born and raised in Chicago, IL and moved to Silver Bay in fall of 2021. In Chicago, I worked as an Aquatics Director and as a Youth Development Specialist. I started as a junior lifeguard when I was 10 years old and worked as a lifeguard for six years. I became the Director of Aquatics, and after high school, I decided to continue working for the Red Cross lifeguarding and directing for different pools, beaches, and lakes.

I love watching people grow and learn different swim skills that they never thought they could achieve.

Outside of work I enjoy biking, hiking, canoeing, camping with friends and family, and of course swimming! I love being outdoors and enjoying nature. I am very happy to be a part of the Silver Bay team and also very excited and grateful to experience being the Aquatic Director and Teen Center Attendent here at Silver Bay this summer!

ERICK MENDOZA - FOOD SERVICE UTILITY LEAD My name is Erick Mendoza. I am from Caracas, Venezuela. I came to Silver Bay YMCA for the first time in 2016 as an international staff member and when I saw this place I automatically fell in love with the lake, the views and the good energy that this place has and it is known

for, I met a lot of good people that now I considered family. Now I’m working in a full time position in the dining hall helping to make a better experience in customer service for the guests. I’m happy here, I feel like home.

NICKI MOSIER - FOOD SERVICE UTILITY KODI MOSIER - MAINTENANCE NIGHT UTILITY I am Nicki Mosier. I have lived in Hague all my life and absolutely love Lake George! I love to fish, hike, and spend time with my daughter Heartlyn. I am married to Kodi Mosier, who also just started here. Silver Bay was my first job ever 22 years ago and I remember loving it so much that I had to come back. I am glad I made the choice to come back to this wonderful place!

Kodi is from Hague, NY and is joining us as our Night Utility in the Maintenance Department. He loves the outdoors, working, and having fun. Kodi is always up for anything and he is happy to be a part of the Silver Bay YMCA family.

Come celebrate The Terrace Water Company’s 100 Year Anniversary by participating in a historic walking tour of some of the cottages of TWC! What is Terrace Water?

It is a small, private, residential water distribution company in Silver Bay, NY that was incorporated on November 27, 1922. Its purpose is to distribute water during the summer months to approximately 30 cottages on Terrace Rd, 9N and on the north end of Silver Bay Road near Oneita Bay. Come learn about the unique partnership Terrace Water and Silver Bay have and how it enables much of the cottage community here at Silver Bay to refresh, renew and thrive!

THE CONTINUITY OF SILVER BAY

THE NEXT 100 YEARS the Crickets she held back then. Now retired, she enjoys volunteering in the craft program that she and the girls took part in as guests.

I have had the pleasure of working in Conference Set Up for a number of years. Over time, I have seen the continuity of Silver Bay with having the children and grandchildren of long-time members as co-workers as well as working with conference and group leaders whom I get to know as more than just another client as they return each year.

Silver Bay has been a special place for us since our first time there as guests. We had vacationed on Lake George in another location several times prior and enjoyed it, but didn’t feel a connection.

As has been said about Silver Bay, you either get it, or you don’t. As we came with our three young children, we got it! We already liked the area, but found the connection that kept us coming back and looking forward to our next time. It wasn’t just a vacation, it was a second community

as we all made friends with others who shared our time here year after year, and took part in the programs, activities and worship at Silver Bay. Our second, more meaningful attachment came as Emps. Our three daughters were Emps for multiple years and made friends they still keep up with across the country.

One summer, in a use it or lose it vacation time situation, my wife Merribeth spent the summer in the Children’s Pavilion with the Crickets.

MESSAGE FROM THE EMP ALUMNI FELLOWSHIP THE NEXT 100 YEARS My name is Kathleen Leonard and I am excited to introduce myself as the new President of the Emp Alumni Fellowship and extend an invitation to all former Emps to become involved.

Having served as an Emp for seven years in a variety of departments, Silver Bay and the Emp community are a treasured part of my life as I’m sure is the case for many others.

Since becoming involved with EAF I have been able to work alongside generations of Emps as well as reunite with friends from bygone years. This spring, any first-time or former Emp enrolled full-time in an accredited college for the school year following the summer of employment who would not be able to work at Silver Bay because of financial reasons is encouraged to apply to the scholarship. Applications may

22ND ANNUAL GOLF TOURNAMENT Join us for a day of golf, fun, and friendship at the 22nd Annual Golf Tournament! The day will feature breakfast for all participants, course refreshments, gift bags, golf accessories, golf hat, a $25,000 hole-in-one prize, and a chance to win $5,000 by sinking a single putt. MILESTONES SILVER BAY

Robert Berls

Passed on November 10, 2021 Age: 81 Colonel Robert “Bob” Edwin Berls, Jr. Ph.D was born in Brooklyn, NY and attended Bay Shore High School on Long Island, NY. In the 8th grade, Bob was selected to be a delegate to an UN-sponsored meeting in the Netherlands, beginning his lifelong career in diplomacy.

Bob received a bachelor’s degree in Russian Area Studies from Colgate University, a master’s degree in Soviet Studies from Harvard University, and a doctorate in Russian area studies from Georgetown University. Bob held teaching positions at the National War College, National Defense University and the U.S. Air Force Academy.

During his career in the Air Force, Bob was at the center of one of the most intense periods in US-Russian relations. He participated at every level, from being involved in the highest-level negotiations to being interrogated by local KGB officers in backwaters of the former Soviet Union.

After a distinguished career that spanned military, government, academia and business, Bob joined the Nuclear Threat Initiative, a nonpartisan, nonprofit organization that works to prevent catastrophic attacks and accidents with weapons of mass destruction.

He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Tatiana, and by his daughter Natasha and his son Grisha and 3 grandchildren.

John Brown

Passed on February 21, 2022 Age: 93 John was a loving and loved husband, father, grandfather, and greatgrandfather. He held a lifelong devotion to education that continued well after his professional life ended.

John cared first and foremost about people, people’s stories, and his community.

He was born in New York City to devoted parents John Muir Brown and Gabriella (Bacon) Brown. John attended Cornell University briefly before taking a sabbatical to work as a laborer, foreman, and eventually director at Alexander Smith Carpet Company. Three years later he returned to Cornell to finish his Bachelor of Science degree in industrial and labor Relations, where he met Joanne, the love of his life.

In June 1955 John and Joanne were married in Teaneck, NJ just a few weeks after their graduation from Cornell, and honeymooned in Silver Bay, NY. In 1992 John retired from the role of Dean of Students at Ithaca College, which he held for 30 happy years.

Following his retirement, John and Joanne moved from Ithaca to their summer home in Silver Bay for many happy years in the “North Country.”

As Joanne was still working as the principal of Ticonderoga Elementary School, John threw himself fully into the local community.

Charlotte Gosselink

Passed on December 10, 2021 Age: 86 Charlotte was an ordained minister of the United Church of Christ, having served as minister to the South Emanuel Church in Rochester, NY and as an Associate Conference Minister of the UCC regional offices in Syracuse, NY and Collegeville, PA. Charlotte attended Oberlin College, and on receiving her B.A., went to India for two years teaching English and French. On returning, she accepted a job as Associate Director of the student YM/YWCA at the University of Texas, then a center for social and political action. She was actively involved in efforts to integrate the theaters and restaurants in the area.

After much traveling for her husband Chuck’s career, they returned to the U.S. and settled in Providence, RI, where both were on the faculty of the Moses Brown School. Charlotte attended Harvard Divinity School and Andover-Newton Seminary and prepared to become an ordained minister.

Throughout her life, Char was politically involved; always ready to act on her deeply felt commitment to social justice. She is also remembered for her quiet strength, sensitivity, and wisdom in working with likeminded people to solve problems and promote the better good.

Char is survived by her husband of 60 years, Chuck Gosselink, and her three children and five grandchildren.

George Ludlow

Passed on December 31, 2021 Age: 84 George was born in Columbus Grove, Ohio, to Robert and Lavonna (Unger) Ludlow. On February 24, 1962, he married Joyce Haughawout in Fostoria, Ohio.

He graduated from high school in Fostoria then went to further his education at Finley College and later received his Master’s from Bowling Green University.

George was a teacher and swim coach for several years. He was the Executive Director with the YMCA in both Monroe, Michigan and Silver Bay, New York. He then moved to Gas City, IN and became an implement dealer.

Survivors include his wife, Joyce Ludlow; daughter, Karen (Jay) Worrell; son, Bruce Ludlow; grandchildren, Alison Ludlow, Matthew (Jessica) Worrell, Megan Worrell, Morgan (Bryan) Babb, Taylor (Ryan) White, Claire Ludlow, and Tanner (Maria) Ludlow; greatgrandchildren, Liam Worrell, Lanie Worrell, Maren Babb, Myles Babb, and Luke Ludlow; step-grandchildren, Kara Gilmore and Aaron (Jill) Gilmore; and sister, Marilyn (James) Dewyr.

Paul Penfield

Passed on June 22, 2021 Age: 88 Paul Livingstone Penfield Jr. died on June 22nd, 2021 of complications from prostate cancer. He was born in Detroit, MI. One of his biggest passions was his family and he loved spending time on Lake George in New York. As with every other aspect of his life, no task was too big or too small for his devoted attention if it helped bring people together and make the world a better place.

Paul received a B.A. degree in physics from Amherst College in 1955 and a Sc.D. degree in electrical engineering from MIT in 1960. He maintained his passion for electrical engineering

through a forty-five year career at MIT, joining the MIT faculty in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science in 1960. He was the Director of the Microsystems Research Center from 1985 to 1989 and the Professor of Electrical Engineering from 2000 until his retirement in June of 2005.

Paul also published five books and hundreds of articles. Outside of work, he became a North American fern expert and was passionate about genealogy. He is survived by his companion Catherine Liddell, his sister Martha Warren (Penfield) Brown and her husband David Tyner Brown, three children, and four step-children.

Dorothy Rowland

Passed on June 1, 2021 Age: 95 Dorothy “Dot” Rowland passed away peacefully on Tuesday, June 1, 2021 in Palm Harbor, FL. She was born in Paoli, PA on May 12, 1926. She is survived by her daughters, Sally Haroldsen, Deborah Stoms, Kate McCaffery; and her son, William Rowland of Dunedin, eight grandchildren, and 17 great grandchildren. She is also survived by her niece, Barbara Folkemer, and her nephew William Isinger.

Dot played the violin and trumpet and sang in the chorus when she was in school. She then received her RN from the University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing in 1947.

After marrying in 1947, she worked part-time at Bryn Mawr Hospital while starting a family. When her children were old enough, she switched to full time as a Med/Surg Nurse, eventually being promoted to Nursing Supervisor.

She then left hospital nursing to work for Hospice. Finally, she worked as a Visiting Nurse before moving to Dunedin in 1985.

Methodist Church of Dunedin. Dot had a winning personality and made friends easily. Dot loved God, her family, her friends, and her pets.

Lillian Ruth Schafft

Passed on December 13, 2021 Age: 99 Lillian Ruth Schafft passed into the arms of Jesus on December 13, 2021.

She was born in Jersey City, NJ on June 22, 1922 to Raymond Eastman and Clarinda Schmidt Eastman. Lillian was predeceased by her parents, her husband, Hans Schafft, and her brothers Raymond and Edwin Eastman.

She is survived by her daughters, Linda (Brian) LaFontaine and Ruth Ann (Cliff) Rehm. She is also survived by five grandchildren, ten great grandchildren and several devoted nieces.

A devoted Christian, she was baptized at a Lutheran Church in Jersey City, NJ. She later met her husband Hans at Zion Lutheran Church in Rahway NJ where she served on numerous boards, choirs and special committees.

Even vacations centered around the gospel, attending The Lutheran Summer conference at the Silver Bay YMCA on Lake George, NY in 1939 and continuing to attend the yearly conference well into her late 80’s.

Along with her church activities, Lillian had many civic activities: an advisory board member Habitat for Humanity, an 80 year member and past worthy matron of The Eastern Star, Literary Chair of the Scottsville Council of the Arts, and the Silver Bay Council.

Dot had a beautiful singing voice, and sang in the choirs at the Paoli Methodist Church and the First United
