Disclosure of HIV Status

- Disclosure

involves one partner sharing his or her HIV status with the other partner(s) or any other person.

Mutual disclosure is when two (or more) partners share their HIV status with one another.

- This happens when partners test together or agree to share with each other their HIV status if tested separately. In case you find it hard to disclose, a counselor can support you to disclose.

Benefits of Disclosing HIV Status

- It helps couples to make informed decisions about HIV prevention and reproductive health, including family planning. Couples can support each other, if one or both partners are HIV-positive, to access and adhere to ART and prevention of mother-to-child transmission (PMTCT) of HIV. - In case of discordant couples, taking the HIV drugs (ART) by the HIV positive partner can significantly reduce the risk of infecting the negative partner.Taking antiretrovirals (ARVs) by the negative partner (pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) can help to reduce chances of being infected.

What is Counselor Supported Disclosure?

- It is a process where a client who has challenges informing their sexual partner(s) or any other person about their HIV status is assisted by a counselor to do so.

A counselor can help the partners discuss difficulty issues in a non-judgmental environment. This can be done as follows: (a) Testing together during the same session (b) One partner testing alone then inviting their partner to and share their status. The counselor is able to confirm the status of the one tested earlier if it was done in the same centre with the first partner’s consent.
