Your monthly gift could be the cost of a cup of coffee a day or less. But $25 a month means a significant annual tax creditable gift to you of $300 a year.

My childhood consisted of going to performing arts schools, being in traveling shows throughout New England, going on commercial auditions and modeling for various small catalogues or venues. I went to the University of Miami and studied theatre performance and vocal performance. I then moved to NYC, worked nights doing computer work in law firms and spent my days auditioning. I further pursued my music career by moving to Los Angeles. I recorded my first album there, and while trying to pay for my music career, somehow blossomed in the legal IT world and started traveling around the county as an IT/Computer Specialist. At that point, I actually met my future husband who lived in New Hampshire. I fell in love and knew that since I wasn’t writing or recording as much as I had planned, I decided to move back to New England to get married and start a family. I never planned on giving up my goals in the music industry, I just knew that I wanted a family even more than I wanted to perform. After having children, with my arts knowledge, computer skills and musicianship, I started my current business…. a unique photography business that allows me to combine each of those skills, Storybook Sessions®, LLC. I still continue writing music to submit to songwriting listings in

2 President’s Letter

I am asking you to consider a change in the way you support our work by becoming a special Friend of the Foundation by making a gift of $25 a month to further our work.

I am a 38 year old mom, photographer and ASCAP songwriter. After experiencing 12 difficult years of various illnesses, I now know I am also an individual with Lupus. My flight for a diagnosis was a long one and now my determination to spread education and awareness is a deep one. I’ve always believed as Randy Pausch said in his speech, The Last Lecture,“We cannot change the cards we are dealt, just how we play the hand.”It took 12 years for me to find out exactly what cards I had been holding. Now that I know my cards consist of Lupus, I’m happy to play my hand by sharing it with others, in the hopes that their cards can be deciphered more quickly.

What is lupus?

How can the Lupus Foundation New England help?

Lupus is a chronic autoimmune disease that causes the immune system to attack healthy tissue resulting in inflammation, particularly of the skin, joints and kidneys. It develops most commonly in women between the ages of 15-45, and occurs more often in African-American, Hispanics, Native Americans and Asians. Men can get lupus too. Lupus is not infectious or cancerous.

The Lupus Foundation New England serves people with lupus, their families and caregivers by providing information, education and support programs.

What are the symptoms?

Workshops, Health Fairs and Seminars

Some symptoms of lupus can be joint and muscle pain, extreme fatigue, skin rashes, rash or redness on the face (known as “butterfly rash”), fevers, hair loss, pleurisy, loss of appetite, mouth or nose sores and sensitivity of the fingers and/or toes to the cold. Often, symptoms develop so slowly that no pattern emerges, or they come and go. Lupus never affects two people the same way.

Understanding Lupus

Ask the Doc

This is a program in which rheumatologists and other specialists provide answers to call-in and email questions. The Foundation participates in workshops, health fairs and seminars about lupus and related health topics throughout our service area. Area support groups meet on a regular basis by professionally trained facilitators where people can discuss lupus, new treatments and strategies for living well with the disease. A toll-free line is available to all in the New England area for physician referrals, social security disability issues or just to talk about current concerns. 1-877 NO LUPUS

The cause of lupus is still not known but scientists suspect that some people have a genetic predisposition to lupus and that environmental factors such as infections, antibiotics, ultraviolet light, stress and some drugs can trigger lupus. How can I get a diagnosis?

Lupus can be difficult to diagnose because it mimics many other diseases. No single test can determine if someone has lupus. A complete medical history, physical examination and laboratory tests can determine a diagnosis. Early detection and treatment can usually lessen the progression and severity of this disease. Symptoms can be controlled with appropriate treatment, and most people diagnosed with lupus can lead active healthy lives. www.lupusne.org

The Foundation provides help and hope to those touched by this disease while increasing awareness and funding for vital medical research. We rely on your support to make this happen. You can make a difference.

What information is necessary when I make a referral?

The Center is located right on Route 140 in the southern part of Upton at 206 Milford Street. Day and evening appointments are available to accommodate referred patients.

Depending on the needs of the patient, he or she may remain in Riverside’s Urgent Behavioral Healthcare Center for crisis stabilization and short-term treatment, particularly if medication is necessary. After stabilization, the patient will be referred to a mental health provider in the community or back to the referring physician for ongoing mental healthcare. Riverside will provide regular updates to the referring physician and provide consultation, if necessary, after the patient is referred back.

Patients and referring physicians will be asked for the following information: s Patient demographics, social security number, insurance subscriber information and contact information.

s Specific information regarding the reason for the referral, including background of the client, reported/observed symptoms, and current or previous interventions. Information concerning any suicidality, homicidality, psychosis, and current medications is critically important. A Riverside clinician will contact the patient within one to two business days – or sooner if necessary – to schedule an appointment. Riverside will evaluate the patient and confer with the referring physician regarding a care plan.

Questions for School on Bullying and a Suicide — New York Times,

April 1, 2010

Riverside’s statewide network of trauma response teams provided expertise to the affected communities. In June, Riverside and The Guidance Center, with Partners Health Care and the Massachusetts Department of Mental Health offered a full-day conference on “Bullying: Lessons in Prevention and Intervention” to a sold out audience of mental health professionals and school personnel.

January’s catastrophic earthquake in Haiti left 230,000 people dead and one million homeless. Its repercussions reached far beyond the borders of the island nation, with particular impact on the Boston area’s large Haitian immigrant population. With significant numbers of Haitians among our staff and the people we serve, Riverside clinicians provided counseling support to many. Additionally, the Riverside Trauma Center participated in citywide events in Somerville and provided trauma response — Los Angeles Times, experts to the City of Boston’s Haitian January 13, 2010

With Massachusetts domestic violence homicides in 2010 on pace to surpass statistics from 2009, Riverside is proud to be part of the response. Children with Voices: A Child Witness to Violence, one of our Guidance Center programs, has been awarded a grant from the Department of Justice to coordinate the Cambridge Arlington Belmont High Risk Assessment and Response Team (CAB HART). This multi-disciplinary, community-based team aims to reduce and prevent domestic violence homicides and hold offenders accountable by refining and tightening existing relationships between police, courts, and community providers.
