MD ADDRESS SIKA BEAT AUGUST 2021

It is remarkable to think that this time last year we were all in a positive frame of mind and talking of the recovery of the Covid-19 lockdown that had taken place a few months before. Our company was gaining momentum, both factories were fully operational, and the outlook on sales was positive once again. These trends prevailed to year-end and into the first half of this year where we managed to post excellent results. We could not have foreseen that once the news of Zuma’s looming imprisonment broke, our country would again grab worldwide attention for all the wrong reasons. Absolute anarchy broke out, with looting and destruction of property on a scale unprecedented since the 1970’s. I personally believe that we, as a company, will overcome these challenges, as we have in the past, though it will be a lot tougher than the Covid-19 lockdown recovery. Unfortunately, many businesses will not survive the consequential economic setbacks which will in turn lead to further job losses and increased poverty.

PAUL ADAMS MD, Sika South Africa

Many of our sales staff witnessed customer’s stores being looted and burnt to the ground, and most of us followed the news reports. Sadly, these stores will in all probability never reopen. Emotions will run high as the results of the violence prevail, ending years of building and fostering customer relationships. Furthermore, as if not enough already, we also find ourselves amidst the 3rd wave of Covid-19. Many of our staff have at some point contracted the virus and most of us have lost friends and loved ones. It is with great sadness to report that Covid-19 has claimed the life of one of our most loyal employees, Jackie Meyerhoff. ‘Resilience’ may be a word that is used often and flippantly. Yet it has relevance here in that it alludes to toughness, fortitude and endurance. We South Africans are indeed incredibly resilient, and even more so here at Sika. We are all experiencing these hardships together, but our Sika spirit and support of one another will get us through these difficult times. I am extremely thankful that we, Sika, have not lost any lives during the violence, and that we suffer no further loss of life to the Covid-19 pandemic. Please continue to keep yourselves and your families safe. I look forward to seeing you all again soon. Kuyamangaza ukucabanga ukuthi ngalesisikhathi ngonyaka owedlule besisesimweni esihle ngokomqondo, sinethemba lokudlula kuloku kuvaleleka ngenxa ye Covid-19 osekuthathe izinyanga ezimbalwa ezedlule. Njengenjwayelo inkampani yethu kokubili kwezokukhiqiza nokusabalalisa, ibisebenza ngokuphelele futhi ezentengiselwano zethu bese zisimeme . Lokhu kuye kwafinyelela ngasekupheleni konyaka, kuye kwisigamu sokuqala salonyaka lapho sikwaze ukuba nemiphumela emihle kakhulu. Asizange nakancane sicabange ukuthi ukuphuma kwezindaba zokuboshwa kuka Zuma kungenza izwe lethu libe undabamlonyeni ngezizathu ezingalungile. Isiphithiphithi esikhulu esidalekile sokutatshwa nokulinyazwa kwezakhiwo sibe sikhulu njengalesi sama 1970’s. Ngokwami nginalo ithemba lokuthi sizodlula kulesimo esibucayi njengoba senzile ngaphambili, kodwa kuzoba nzima kunokusimama ekuvalelweni kwezwe ngenxa ye Covid-19. Ngebhadi amabhizinisi amaningi angeke asavuka kulesimo sokuwa komnotho-okuzoholela ekulahlekeni kwenqwaba yemisebenzi nobuphofu. Iningi labadayisi bethu lizibonele ngokwalo ukutatshwa kwezitolo, zicekelwa phansi nangomlilo futhi iningi lethu sonke besilandela imibiko yabezindaba. Ngokudabukisayo, lezi zitolo kungenzeka zingaphinde zivulwe. Imimoya izoba phezulu ngenxa yodlame oluvelile, okuzoqeda ukwakheka kobudlelwane obuhle nabathengi. Ngaphezu kwalokho, sizithola siphakathi nehlandla lesithathu le Covid-19. Iningi labasebenzi bethu liye lahaqwa ileligciwane futhi abaningi kithi sishiywe izihlobo nabangane. Kubuhlungu kakhulu kumina ukubika ukuthi iCovid-19 iye yathatha omunye wabasebenzi bethu abaqotho uJackie Meyerhoff. Ukuba ‘yinsika’,yigama elisetshenziswa kaningi futhi noma kanjani. Kodwa leligama lihambelana nokuqina, ukulwa kanzima, nokuzimelela. Thina eSouth Africa impela siyinsika, ikakhulukazi lapha kwaSika. Sidlule ezimweni ezinzima sindawonye kodwa umoya wethu wakwaSika nokwesekana kuzoqhubeka kusidlulisa nakulesikhathi esilukhuni. Nginokubonga okukhulu ukuthi thina kwaSika asilahlekelwanga mphefumulo ngenxa yodlame nokuthi asiqhubeki nokulahlekelwa ngenxa yalolubhubhane lweCovid-19. Ngiyanicela niqhubeke niqikelela ukuthi nina nemindeni yenu niphephile. Ngibheke phambili ekuniboneni futhi maduze.

LEAD STORY

SIKA DAY

June 11, 2021 marks the first Sika Day – a global event dedicated to all our employees around the world to celebrate our Sika culture. June 11 is a significant day of our organization. It was exactly three years ago that the extraordinary shareholders meeting was held that resolved the threat of being taken over by St. Gobain. Sika remains an independent company. Thus, this new yearly celebration falls on this day that paves the way for a new chapter of our success story. At Sika, we care about our culture and our people. It is therefore our goal and our passion to preserve the strong Sika Spirit and to pass it on to the next generations. This year, there are three key initiatives that were put in place, addressing aspects that are most vital for our cultural evolution:

leadership, diversity, and integrity.

SIKA PROJECTS

MSC BERTH REPAIRS

Mediterranean Shipping Company, better known as MSC, required berth repairs to their new docking site next to the new passenger terminal, in the Durban harbour. Stefanutti Stocks were awarded the project for both the berth repairs and the construction of the passenger terminal. The berth repairs - a project not as simple as it seemed - required the existing bollards to be removed and replaced, together with the rehabilitation and strengthening of the concrete surrounding the bollards. To ensure the durability and immovability of the berth and bollards, the entire rehabilitation took 8 months to complete. On the merit of meeting all the stringent requirements, Sika’s range were the products of choice. Since the scope of the project involved removing and replacing 42 bollards, and thereafter to remove and replace 21 fenders, several various specialists were engaged. The primary specialist was Engineering Projects and Naval Architecture, who designed and planned the project. Doing the specialist work were the main contractors, Stefanutti Stocks Coastal, together with the sub-contractors, Structural Maintenance and Holmes Cutting and Coring. The project and quality managers were sourced

from Turner and Townsend. PROCESS To start, Holmes cut out and removed the existing damaged fenders, bollards and their anchoring bolts. They then cored 16 holes per bollard, at a raked angle to allow for the new reinforcing, each 80 mm in diameter and 8 m deep. Structural Maintenance filled all cored holes on all 42 bollards with the SikaGrout®-212 a high-strength cementitious grout and Sika® UCS-01. Due to the marine environment, Sika® UCS-01, an underwater admixture which forms a jellylike substance when used with a cementitious product, was used with the SikaGrout®-212, to prevent small sand particles from washing away. The SikaGrout®-212 was specifically chosen for the environment because of its low shrinkage capabilities. Once the installation of the bollards was complete, Stefanutti stocks rehabilitated the existing concrete around the bollards. This was done using SikaGrout®-212 and a joint sealant system comprising of Sika® Primer-3N and Sikaflex® PRO-3 i. The SikaGrout®-212 was used to fill up the large voids of concrete creating construction joints between the old and new

concrete. These construction joints required a joint sealant system to seal all recesses and cavities. The use of these products created a neat uniform look around each bollard and allowed for movement between the old and new substrates. Thereafter the so called ‘Dead Man Anchor Block’ needed to be rebuilt 20 m inside of the main key wall, spanning the full 400 m length of the berth wall. It’s a massive concrete anchor that supports the surrounding bollards and helps resist the forces exerted on them by the huge, docked ships. Construction of the dead man anchor required an initial base unit of cast concrete, where a surface retarder, Sika® Rugasol®-2 Liquid, was required to prevent the concrete from setting and to provide a key for the newly poured concrete before the second layer was cast upon it. To further ensure the berth wall was structurally sound, three new anchoring rods were installed between the deadman’s anchor and the bollards. To complete the refurbishment process, Sika® Antisol® E was applied to the surface of the concrete to reduce water loss and prevent shrinkage. CHALLENGES The Covid-19 protocols and regulations were an obvious challenge, with lockdown delays compromising timeous project completion. The conditions of the unique site itself, threw out a few unforeseen challenges. Along with the ever-changing tides, and sea water seeping into the core holes, the contractors also had to deal with the narrow tolerances around the large Y40 reinforcing bars. The areas surrounding the construction site were reclaimed lands. This presented problems through the presence of old oil, fuel pipes, old railway lines, water lines and the main electrical feed to the entire port. Working around these historical objects made every task a little more difficult. Despite the unique conditions, and unexpected challenges of this project, Sika’s specialised products ensured success.

GARAGE ROOF GETS REFURBISHED WITH Sikalastic®-560 Sika’s premium waterproofing system, Sikalastic®-560, proved to be a great success on a weeklong refurbishment project in Llandudno, Western Cape. The double-decked garage roof of House Apostle, which is also used as a seating area, needed waterproofing maintenance due to water seeping through weak areas. This is a common problem for homeowners, especially so when prior waterproofing systems are damaged, or failing with age. In this case, the old bitumen torch-on membrane was no longer watertight, so the owners were looking for new solutions to end their battles with leaks. To avoid having to remove the existing membrane, they sought a waterproofing product that could simply be applied over it. Sika were consulted for advice and concluded that the company’s premium liquid applied, waterproofing system, Sikalastic®-560, was the appropriate solution. Sikalastic®-560 is a one component, liquid applied roof waterproofing solution, based on Sika CoElastic Technology (CET). It is a cold-applied coating and is highly elastic and UV resistant. Popular with many homeowners for its seamless finish, it also facilitates easy application on the more complex detailing prevalent on many rooftops. Furthermore, its reflective coating contributes to a cost-effective reduction in cooling costs by enhancing energy efficiency in the house.

SIKA PROJECTS

16 ON BREE STREET CAPE TOWN’S TALLEST RESIDENTIAL TOWER Renowned as Cape Town’s tallest, there is a phenomenal 36-storey residential tower located on the ever-popular Bree Street. Strategically situated in the CBD, it is within walking distance of attractions such as Cape Quarter, V&A Waterfront and Green Point. 16 on Bree Street offers a broad range of accommodation: from 1.9 million rand studio apartments, through to premium penthouse apartments valued at 13.9 million rand. A few of the key features available in the building are the swimming pool on the 27th level, a rooftop bar, and a one-of-its-kind electric vehicle charger. Along with the exciting recreation, spectacular views of Table Mountain, the Atlantic Ocean, and indeed the cityscape itself, make this building a worthy visitor’s destination on its own. 16 on Bree is a structure of high-quality build, so Sika South Africa were honoured to be appointed as the product supplier to its revamp and protection project. Having a limited time frame to complete the task, it was started on the 23rd October 2019, and completed by the end of February 2021. Concor, the main contractor, together with subcontractors, Skysite and engineers Aurecon/Ekcon, coordinated efforts to ensure a well planned and executed project. Simon Hareb of Skysite, played a critical role in the quality control and application of Sikagard®-550 W Elastic. The aim of the main project was to give the building façade a raw concrete look - known as off-shutter concrete, which is suited to modern contemporary design – whilst still providing an aesthetic protective coating for durability purposes. To achieve this, and to ensure the off-

shutter remains in good condition year-round, required a crack-bridging and concrete repair strategy, along with structural strengthening. Crack Bridging As exposure to the outdoor elements can lead to a high risk of concrete cracking, a crack bridging protective coating was applied, in conjunction with the Sika concrete repair system. Sikagard®- 550 W Elastic not only offers weathering protection, but also caters for the aesthetic enhancement to the concrete structures, as per the project spec requirements. To begin with, Sikagard®-550 W Primer was applied evenly onto the concrete, and after a 5-hour drying period, was followed by an application of Sikagard®-550 W Elastic. This process was repeated two to three times, with an 8-hour waiting period between each coat. The project utilised 800 litres of primer and a total of 4880 litres Sikagard®-550 W Elastic. In the endeavour for continued perfection, a wide range of RAL colour samples were supplied with over 10 RAL colour requests submitted. Finally, with credit to Sika’s technical manager, Wayne Smithers, the ideal colours were selected, and the desired finish of the building was achieved. Concrete Repair A range of Sika MonoTop® mortars were used to repair damaged concrete, which also served to give the building a refined, new look. This

range, based on their application thickness specifications, allowed for strategic application on different areas of the building, both indoors and out. Needing only water to be added prior to use, a benefit of Sika’s mortars is that they are all compatible, thus facilitating the varying circumstances. Areas that required extensive repairs, were treated with Sika MonoTop®-615 HB, a high build repair and reprofiling mortar. It is designed for thick layer concrete repairs, especially for overhead and vertical applications. Its excellent workability and adjustable consistency make it a very easy to use product. For the minor defects, such as restoring edges and joints, Sika MonoTop®-620 was used. Sika MonoTop®-610, a bonding primer, was applied for protection against corrosion, and finally, Sikagard®-550 W Elastic was over-coated on all the Sika MonoTop® products to ensure no future cracks occur. Structural strengthening When an existing concrete structure deteriorates, or alteration to the structure is made, due diligence must be given to structural strengthening. The durability of the building can be better ensured post repair, such was the case on this project. Parts of the building, like the lift shafts and machine base plates, required recasting with Sika’s high strength grout, SikaGrout®-212. For the actual structural strengthening, Sika® CarboDur® S-512 carbon fibre plates were bonded onto the external structure using Sikadur®-30 epoxy as its structural adhesive. Sika® CarboDur® S-512 carbon fibre plates are non-corroding, has a tensile strength of 10 times that of mild steel, all of which will ensure the building to stand the test of time.

REST IN PEACE

Jackie

It is with great sadness that I share the devasting news of the loss of one of our treasured colleagues in our Port Elizabeth branch. Jackie was a true Sika legend and someone I have personally known and worked with for over 20 years. She fulfilled many roles in Sika from being an operational support team member, to becoming a distributional sales rep and eventually discovering her true talent in her position as Operational Manager in Sika SA at the PE branch. Jackie was known for her tenacious management style and strive for perfection to ensure the branch always rated as the best. Covid-19 is a constant fear and worry amongst us all and I hoped and prayed that we would never lose any one of us to this dreaded virus, but unfortunately it has claimed one of our precious souls. Our heartfelt condolences go out to Jackie’s husband, Karl and son, Kalahein along with the rest of their family

Rest in Peace Jackie, as a friend/leader in an organization this is one of the hardest things to do is say goodbye to a treasured friend and colleague, you will never be forgotten and my visits to PE will never be the same again. ~Paul Adams
