How has customer appreciation changed in Trivandrum?

The present day customers to Czarina expect exclusive designs. They want their dresses or sarees to be unique.

When Czarina started, it was the other way – People used to ask for dresses/designs which they have seen on others. Some would go for the type of dresses the film stars wear.

In 1988, Sheila James started her first designer boutique ‘Body Tunes’ in the city. The responsibilities of sourcing fabrics and components, designing and production planning were handled by her. The customer base for the designer garments increased with the advent of Czarina.

Sheila James has over 25 years of experience in the textile industry.

She has traveled extensively to the textile centers in the country and learned from leading craftsmen.

Her father’s honest, disciplined, and hardworking approach to work and the unassuming nature of her mother have guided her life.

She believes every entrepreneur should be ready to give attention to detail, gather knowledge and constantly update their knowledge.

Now it has changed and they want to wear exclusive dresses. People have begun to realize the importance of dresses in creating the best first impression.

Where do you source your fabrics?

All across India. We source from the state capitals like Calcutta and Jaipur, other cities like Chhattisgarh, Varanasi, etc. Most of our own designs are done at textile centers.

Each place has its own specialty like embroidery, printing, etc. For example, Kancheepuram is specialized in weaving. As per the specialty of the place, we give our own color combination and get dresses designed.

On Czarina’s Tussar Trove collection?

This is the third year we are showcasing the Tussar Trove collection. There has been a tremendous response. Tussar is a pure silk fabric. It has a matt finish. In that fabric dyeing, block printing, embroidery, etc. are done.

During Christmas-New Year season, what does Czarina have in store?

Christmas-New Year collection has been made available in store now.

Since it is celebration time ahead, the design and dresses would be of grandeur. Sarees and salwars with festive look, party wear, etc. are in display.

Both traditional Tussar and modern designs was in great demand. The collection includes Hand Embroidery, Block Printed, Applic Work, Zari Work, Highlight Work, etc.

Another main attraction was the fusion designs of Tussar and other fabrics. We had a Facebook promotion this time. The positive response through it was very surprising.

The new generation is impressed by the Tussar collection.

ATVM at Trivandrum Central The hassle of standing in lengthy queues to obtain train tickets may soon be a thing of the past. Automatic Ticket Vending Machines (ATVM) will be installed in stations so that the passengers can obtain tickets without standing in lengthy queues. These commuters are not only able to save their time by avoiding long queues at the booking counters but also they can make sure that they board their train in time without missing it.

The ATVMs will be initially installed at Thiruvananthapuram Central and Ernakulam South railway stations. The machines will be operated through smart cards, using which passengers

will be able to draw their own railway tickets. Passengers will have to procure the ‘smart card’, place them in a slot on the ATVM and select the destination by making a choice on the touch screen. The procedure is similar to drawing cash from an ATM. A computer-printed ticket will be delivered and the money will be automatically debited from ‘smart card’ when the ticket is issued. The smart cards of the Railways will be accessible from the booking office and from the ‘facilitators’ who are entrusted to manage the ATVMs. The validity of the ‘smart card’ and other details are being worked out by the Railways.

The inaugural Kerala State Film Awards’ Best Actor award winner Sathyan was born in Thirumala, Trivandrum. During the 17th edition of IFFK, an exhibition of Sathyan’s photos and books written on him was conducted.

What do you aim with this Sathyan Festival?

Every year, exhibitions are conducted; however, this year it features Sathyan collections. This exhibition attempts to create a better awareness of Sathyan Sir.

How has Sathyan contributed to Malayalam Cinema?

The films of that time had an influence of Tamil cinema. Sathyan Sir brought in a body language familiar to Kerala.

His acting was natural. He did not just put up an act, he gave life to the character. His films like Nairu Pidicha Pulivalu were popular. By the time ‘Neelakuyil’ came, he had become an actor acclaimed in the national level.

President’s Silver Medal was brought to Kerala first by Neelakuyil.

People of the present age know about Sathyan from mimicry – the great actor is being insulted by cheap imitation. The new generation should look at Sathyan Sir’s great

contributions to Malayalam Cinema.

He has performed mostly in Manjilas’ cinemas. The combination of Sathyan Sir and Sethumadhavan sir has given many good films. He left us at the peak of his career.

It was during the performance of the character Chellappan in Anubhavangal Paalichakal. Before that, he had done dual role in ‘Kadalpaalam’. He had acted in the two roles so well that nobody would think it was done by the same person – that too at a time when technology had not progressed.

What were the past exhibitions?

Exhibitions have been conducted on various themes such as Art director’s creations, Award winners of Malayalam cinema, and women and Malayalam cinema.

What is the response of young generation to such exhibitions?

There will be a huge audience; however, only about 30-40% would be serious cinema goers, even for the

film festival. Those 30-40% visits the exhibition, take notes and photos.

Some store those in their collections.

They might be media students, journalists, etc. – we are focusing on them. In Sathyan festival, there are elderly visitors who refresh their memories of the films they saw in their young age. The youngsters who visit become aware of Sathyan Sir’s life and career history.

How have you classified the photos?

We have kept them as four sections – Great actor with great directors, Great

actor with heroines, Scenes from important films and From the family album. The Family album section has photos from the private album of Sathyan’s son Satheesh Sathyan.
