elcome to The Incorporated Village of Babylon - This thriving waterside village located on Long Island’s south shore is in the southwest section of Suffolk County. Its proximity to great beaches, entertainment, restaurants, boutiques, and a strong sense of community make this a special place to call home. Babylon was initially part of Huntington Township and known as “Huntington South” dating back to the late 1600s. Its geographic location along the Great South Bay and South Oyster Bay led to its primary industry being the harvesting of salt hay, which was used as cattle feed and bedding. In the early 1800s, Mrs. Conklin, a prominent local citizen came up with the name “New Babylon” after the biblical city. Babylon Village is now part of the larger township of Babylon, on Long Island’s South Shore.

When you live in Babylon, there is no shortage of things to do in the community. The village hosts an Easter Egg Hunt, Memorial Day Parade, Block Party, Fall Festival, and Holiday Lamp Post Decorating, just to name a few.

Play? The town parks are plentiful in Babylon. A few favorites: Argyle: Originally the home of the Argyle Hotel, built in 1882 by August Belmont, the LIRR and resort entrepreneur. Unfortunately, the 350-room hotel was rarely filled and was demolished in 1904. Some of the materials of the hotel were used to build homes west of the lake in the neighborhood now known as Argyle Park. The hotel’s land was donated for passive recreation to the Village of Babylon and is now known as Argyle Park. Its visitors enjoy the lake, strolling, fishing, ice skating, and a playground.
Southards Pond / Carlls River Path: This park is perfect for nature lovers. It is 19 acres, full of nature paths that wind around the streams. Southards Pond is stocked annually with both brown and rainbow trout, so it is a prime spot for fishing. It is part of the Carlls River system, the fourth largest on Long Island.
A Playground for the Wealthy Babylon was a primary gateway to the barrier beaches and Fire Island, until the building of the Captree Causeway. In the late 19th Century many wealthy families came to Babylon to reside at the seaside resorts every summer. These elite and upscale resorts (Surf Hotel in Saltaire, the South Shore Inn, and Watson House; LI Most Luxurious Hotel, The American Hotel, The Argyle) were all places the wealthy would come to visit from NYC. The super wealthy had summer homes and compounds built on the waterfront and these barrier islands.
The Area is
Steeped in History The Village of Babylon was purchased from the Sumpwam Indians in 1670. When the railroad arrived in 1867, it became a thriving resort area. A trolley ran to the steamship dock where ferries sailed to the beaches. The area called Huntington South became Town of Babylon in 1872. The Village of Babylon incorporated in 1893. Following WWII, the area burst with activity, providing homes for returning veterans.

The Conklin House. Nathaniel Conklin foresaw Babylon as a flourishing town. He built a home for his mother on the NE corner of Main St. and Deer Park Ave. in 1803. Legend has it that Nat’s mother was unhappy living across from a tavern. The house now stands on the NW side of Deer Park Ave where it was moved in 1871.

Foodies Despite Babylon’s size, it packs a punch as far as dining options. Glen’s Dinette is the local’s favorite spot for breakfast– get there early. For a great dinner, check out Horace and Sylvia’s Publick House or Barrique. For a late night drink, stop into Mary Carroll’s or the Brixton. The Post Office Café is always a fun stop – from its happy hours to themed nights the food never disappoints. Get your health fix at Juice n Blendz or satisfy your sweet tooth with ice cream at Kilwin’s or a treat at Torta Fina’s Bake Shoppe. The list is endless.
