A New View from the New Year

By John O’Connor, General Manager

W

ow, 2020 is finally here! I don’t know about you, but I thought for sure that we would all have our own personal space travel vehicles by now! Speaking of time, your historic Spokane Club was founded way back in 1890 and the historic Clubhouse, the third and permanent home for the Club, has resided on the corner of Monroe and Riverside for 110 years. If this building, and its little brothers, the Athletics Building and the Valley Club, could talk, think of all the stories and memories they could share. For certain, at the heart of those stories would be our members, because you are the lifeblood and enduring characters of the Club. Originally founded as a men’s club, todays Spokane Club is for woman, children and men of all ages, ethnicities and walks of life. Because of that diversity, we are many things to many people, and continually evolving in that role. We are a 6am dip in the pool; the best 2 . Signals | The Spokane Club magazine | Spring 2020

place in town to play a pick-up basketball game; a welcoming place to share an evening with good wine and great friends; an early morning gathering of friends having coffee sharing stories and laughs; a great place to play tennis with some of the best friends you’ll ever meet; an elegant space to celebrate your wedding; a cozy hotel room to book your family or colleagues in for a night or two; a safe and friendly play room for your children; a supportive place to improve and maintain your health; a friendly smile that greets you and makes you feel at home. We are a Club with hundreds of activities and events throughout the year. Attending these events is often a way to build new relationships or solidify current ones. These events and activities are what memories are made of (think orange rolls!). They are full of tradition, and every month there are also new ones arriving. There are so many ways that you can use your club and we are always here

to listen and to make your club experience more valuable to you. Our recent member survey shows that we serve a wide demographic with many different needs. Along with our 110 year old building, we have many challenges relating to our growth including: deferred maintenance, fast changing social and business norms, cost escalations, keeping dues reasonable, and more. However, what we have in each of you balances those challenges because of your individual and collective value, strength of character and passion for life. Together, your hard-working staff, KemperSports management, and your dedicated Board members will operate your Club in a way that finds balance between the needs of the members, the needs of the brand, the responsibility we have to the past, and a disciplined fiduciary approach to insure the Spokane Club’s future remains bright. Our commitment is that we will collectively continue to create memorable experiences and form relationships that will carry on for years to come. To grow the Club, we must invest in the Club, both in infrastructure and people. In the coming months you will be receiving communication from your Board Chair, Andy DeMott and myself regarding how the capital dollars have been spent thus far, along with coming plans for new projects. Remember, the best way to grow your Club is for you to use your Club and to continue referring your friends, family, neighbors and colleagues to join you in becoming a member of Spokane Club. With our One Member, One Month referral program you will receive one month of free dues for each one of your referrals who sign up for membership. Together, we can sustain, nourish and grow this Club into a bright future. Thank you for your membership and blessings to you all in this New Year!

Important Signals News By Kate Spencer, Marketing & Communications Director Signals magazine has been a part of the Club’s culture for many generations. What started as a single sheet of paper known as the Weekly Calendar evolved over decades to become the full color, 48-page Smoke Signals. Later, the publication was rechristened simply Signals, smoke-free. Signals is one of the very first local magazines to add a digital edition, which allowed us to update info that changed after the hard copy magazine had been printed. That flexibility helped increase the magazine’s shelf life and timeliness.

That same flexibility, along with the environmentally friendliness of digital is very appealing to us. And with paper and mailing costs rising steadily, we are compelled to seriously look at a digital-only magazine as our best future-minded step in the magazine’s evolution and the Club’s stewardship of its assets. For now, we will continue to offer a print edition, but on a more limited basis. This issue that you are reading will be the last issue that we mail to every household. Going forward, we will print 1,000 copies of the magazine and have them delivered directly to the Club. We’ll

celebrate the new issue with a casual quarterly gathering where members can pick up their magazine, enjoy a cocktail and catch up with other members. As always, copies of the magazine will be available for pick up at the Sports Shops, Front Desk and the display space area leading up to the Skywalk. Thank you to all our generations of readers and cheers to all our future generations!

HIIT Studio Celebrates First Anniversary!

By Kate Spencer, Editor in Chief

J

ust one year ago the HIIT Studio opened at the Valley Spokane Club— and what a great addition it is! From the very start, members responded passionately to the program of High Intensity Interval Training. Plus, the amazing results they got from this innovative way to get a work out and have fun doing it were a double win! “We were so excited to offer this to our members and it has been incredibly rewarding to see their results” says Molly Benzel. Those great results come from the HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training) strategy: Give your full-on, very best effort in quick, intense bursts of exercise, followed by periods of short recovery. Using this method, you burn more fat in less time. But that’s not all! The high intensity effort also increases your need for oxygen, both during the workout and the recovery. Exercise experts call this the “afterburn” where your body continues 4 . Signals | The Spokane Club magazine | Spring 2020

to burn fat and calories longer than traditional aerobic activities. The HIIT training studio features a Circuit that includes both cardio and strength exercises that really challenge your body in new ways. The full body workout includes Battle Ropes, Kettle

Bells, TRX, HIIT Mill, HIIT Bike, battle ropes, rowing, planks and pushups, Gauntlet and MORE! The HIIT Mill is a self-powered treadmill so your own strength and determination are what moves you. On this machine, you can run hill sprints, hike, or simply walk. Whatever your pace and power, the HIIT Mill gets you on the path to greater endurance. The HIIT Bike is a fan and dual bike. The faster you pedal, the quicker the fan rotates, which creates greater resistance. On this bike, the core of your body is more engaged and the push and pull with your arms and legs is awesome. And oh, what legs you’ll have! “We’ve been averaging 15-20 members on Tuesday at 9:15am and Saturday mornings at 9:00am,” says Molly. It’s a whole lot of energy and what we like to call controlled chaos!” Members are loving the classes and the awesome instructors who lead them. “If you’re looking for something to challenge yourself, the Valley HIIT classes are it, says Aliece Ellisen.

and HIIT does this and more! I have never been much for exercise classes, but these offer a lot of fun camaraderie. The HIIT instructors inspire us to work our best and provide great coaching that also ensures our safety. No two classes are ever the same! Nicolette Brandt

“It’s fast paced, high energy feel, keeps you motivated to push yourself past your threshold,“ says Aliece Ellisen. “Plus, anyone at any age or fitness level can do it!” So how about you? Are you read to get HIIT FIT? Check out the Valley schedule and get HIIT FIT for LIFE!

What Members are saying about HIIT classes: Most of us can agree instructors play a huge role in how your workout will be. There are several incredible instructors at the club now. Becky Raabe happens to be one. She is always happy to see you in class, she knows just about everyone by name. Becky prepares for her classes and wants you to get the most efficient workout possible. If an injury prohibits you from doing a certain movement she will always offer a modification. She intuitively knows when you need to be pushed or pulled along by watching you. She is always one to encourage camaraderie in her classes and that provides additional motivation. Becky’s classes, well, there like being with a friend who cares about your fitness, works your body hard and wants you to have fun at the same time. And when her class is over ... your body claps for itself! Bernie Brown

I’ve been taking HIIT classes at the Spokane Club for several years. Brita’s leadership encourages participants to push themselves at their own rate, so my fitness level has increased. What has also increased is the fun quotient and the camaraderie between participants. This combination means I always get a great workout and always want to attend class. When Brita leads a class, I know I’ll sweat a lot and laugh a lot. PS. I think the move from the gym to the upstairs room has been very positive. Thanks for making all this possible, Ann Fennessy Love these classes! I was once a voracious runner, but since my knees have become arthritic I needed something to give me that physical and mental “high”...

Coming from the person who has a background in sustained heart rate cardio from years of running, I have really appreciated the HIIT classes at the SC. It has helped me achieve and maintain my health and fitness goals because I find I work harder when I’m “in the work” knowing that relief is near. Catching my breath and letting my heart rate come down a little makes it easier and far more effective when I take it back up. I really love this type of exercise… It works! Janet Goebel HIIT training classes are hands down, the best bang for your buck! We have incredible instructors (Brita Frost, Becky Raabe, Molly Benzel) who keep it fresh, exciting, and challenging by changing up the classes every time. They demo and guide you through the circuits as well as keep you psyched up. Before you know it, you’ve had an incredible cardio, weight, strength and core workout. Bottom Line: It’s good for you, goes by fast, and it’s fun! Leanne Kelly Jay and I love taking the HIIT class together. Individually, we can make it as hard and challenging as we need. It’s a great overall body conditioning class, that keeps our heart rate up the entire time. Thank you, Jay & Christina Balkenbush

Make Time for the Precious Present

THINK ABOUT WHAT YOU CHERISH IN LIFE MORE OFTEN Think about what your life would be like without these touchstones of love, laughter, solace and grace. Decide to consciously think about the value of those people, pets, places and unique touchstones in your life. Think about the people you love more often, what specifically you love about them, and how well you show that love to them. Think about telling these people about all those good things today. And after you think about doing it, do it.

ACCEPT THE HELP YOU ARE OFFERED, GIVE THE HELP YOU CAN

By Kate Spencer

T

he fires still burning in Australia sent both people and wildlife running for their lives. Wildlife populations have been decimated, the land has been charred to black and burned to dust, and people are still running for their lives. People running for their lives don’t think much about possessions, they think, in their adrenaline saturated terror, about who and what they love and the risk to both. They think about their kids, their family and friends, and the life they share in good times and bad. It shouldn’t take a crisis to recognize what we value most. It shouldn’t, but it often does. Being human, we spend a lot of time either planning/worrying about the future or ruminating/romanticizing the past. 6 . Signals | The Spokane Club magazine | Spring 2020

“We look before and after, and pine for what is not. Our sincerest laughter with some pain is fraught. Our sweetest songs are those that tell of saddest thought.” These words were written ages ago by Percy Bysshe Shelley, one of the great English Romantic poets. Shelley was right in his own way, and his own life had its full share of pining and searching in it. And so do ours. But the times we live in call for a different kind of searching at a different time in the history of humanity. So much hangs in the balance and the decisions that each of us makes have greater reverberations throughout our communities and our world.

All of us will find ourselves dependent on the goodwill of others sometime in our lives. Whether it’s a life-saving bowl of food when we are hungry or the help of a neighbor doing chores we can’t currently do, accepting the help of others blesses the receiver and the giver. Decide to be both in this life and then find a way to be that in a consistent way. Make it something that is genuinely doable, sustainable and meaningful for you. Donating money is helpful, but donating time, care and focused attention brings you closer to the shared humanity of others and your own. Don’t wait for the grand gesture or the wide-open weekend. Do what you can, with what you have, where you are.

SIT, STAY, WATCH We are an action-oriented society, with spreadsheets, calendars and to-do lists. Action makes us feel like we are doing something important and meaningful,

which we often actually are. But there are circumstances in every life that invite and often demand that we slow down to the reality of conditions that will not change, improve, or even be fully grasped without the grace of time, and the time of grace. The natural world has its own rhythms and cycles. Natural disasters and catastrophic circumstances happen to every generation, and every generation regenerates itself to a new normal. Now, more than ever, the impact of the human mind and heart on both natural and humanmade disasters is inestimable, both for the better and for the worse. What we do with our intellectual and emotional intelligence directly impacts the world like no other creature, and with enduring consequences. Making the time to sit, stay and watch over what is priceless in our personal and collective lives is part of the work of creating a sustainable world for those who come long after us.

NEVER GIVE UP As long as we are living, there is hope for a new day. As long as we are caring, there is a bowl of food and a place for healing. Humans have an innate ability to spring back, rebuild and reset to a new normal. Sometimes it takes a fire to bring the rain. There are moments even in the midst of crisis when all is moving towards calm, all is moving towards bright. While that may still be a distant dream for many, never forget that it remains a possible dream for all.

Hello, my name is Dominique and I am 29 years old. I was born and raised in Seattle and I moved to Eastern Washington where I attended Eastern Washington University for a degree in Exercise Science. During my time there I found an interest in group exercise and started attending and teaching group exercise classes. I have been teaching group exercise classes for 7 years and I love every aspect about it. I believe that there is a group exercise class for everyone and that it’s just about finding that perfect balance between class format and instructor to build a perfect relationship. During my second pregnancy I taught classes and made it my mission to offer different options and modifications as possible so that everyone feels successful. No matter if it’s your first time to my class or your first class of the day, you will always have options to fit your needs. Exercising is about having fun and about building a stronger body both physically and mentally. My goal for

each class is that every individual leaves a little bit happier than when they arrived, and that they feel a little bit stronger and successful to conquer what life throws at them. Cheers to 2020! I hope to see you all soon.

Courtney Yarber

Hello, my name is Courtney and I have been guiding yoga at the Spokane Club for the last 4 years. I started practicing yoga over 20 years ago and have always loved the way it makes me feel physically, mentally and emotionally at ease. I worked several years in different hospitals and radiology modalities and have always been fascinated with the body/mind and nutrition. I signed up for yoga teacher training 5 years ago hoping to cultivate my own practice, and I have attended numerous workshops studying the different limbs of yoga. I found the benefits of a consistent practice to be life changing and wanted to share its transformation with others. I want everyone to feel comfortable, safe, and willing to be challenged during class. I have lived in Spokane since 2006 with my husband

and have two daughters. I am grateful for the opportunity to teach at the Spokane Club. The members are all so kind and inspirational. I continue to learn so much practicing with them. It is a wonderful loving community to be a part of.

Brita Frost

I was born and raised in Spokane and have always lived an active lifestyle. My husband and I became members at the Spokane Club because of their basketball program. I did not fully take advantage of all the Club had to offer until I became a stay-at-home mom. This is when the club became my second home! The Club offered me a chance to get back into shape, provided me with a break from my kids (to shower alone in peace) and establish myself again. I actively took as many group fitness classes as I could (even while pregnant with my second son) and soon took on a love for all things fitness. I loved the challenges it offered me both mentally and physically, and also enjoyed the community that I grew to be a part of. After attending classes daily, Molly Benzel asked me to step in and help lead a few Total Body Conditioning classes when they were shorthanded. This is where I realized I really enjoyed leading and encouraging people to push themselves and their fitness level. I since have become certified in Cycle and HIIT classes and now teach 2-3 times a week. I love taking members on their fitness journeys, but most of all love building trusting and lasting relationships with them. Both my boys have grown up in the Club’s amazing Childcare, have taken swim lessons and tennis lesson through the Club as well. Without the Club I’m not sure I would have survived being a stay-at-home mom. It has provided me with an opportunity to work again yet still be at home with my kids when they need me most!

Group Fitness Class Schedules Available via Email & Online!

Fitness is a dynamic, evolving field and so are the Club’s fitness classes! To ensure that you have the latest updates on classes, we will now be posting our Monthly Schedules and other fitness news in Club-wide emails and online postings at Spokaneclub.org/PLAY.We will also have printed copies of the schedules for you at both Sport Shops.

Cheers to our members and their passion for fitness! www.spokaneclub.org | Spring 2020 | 21

53rd Annual Lilac Handball Tournament

Bud Nevers and Mark Piaskowski with 60+ champs Ken Starcher and Tom Laverty By Rich Carver The 53rd Annual Lilac Handball Tournament at the Spokane Club hosted 58 players from six states and B.C. the second weekend of November. Everyone got a chance to vie for prize money, $100 for first and $50 for second in each division, with the open division offering $800 and $400 respectively. This year we paid our respects to one of our very own who courageously fought back cancer for 20 years, never complaining, and always returning to claw, dig, and dive for every point every game: Mike Dobler, a.k.a. The Praying Mantis. We will miss his competitiveness and relentless positivity. Two Oregon players, Dalton Beall and Kyle English, met in the finals with Dalton prevailing. To reach the finals, Beall bettered Fred Schoener and English continued his streak against Pete Svennungsen. Two of the top 60+ players in the nation, Dan Murphy and Mike Flannery won their first round in this particularly strong field of 13 open players. Olympic Club players, Ryan Lopez and David Sanchez III made it to the consolation finals. In order to be able to offer the prize money and outstanding hospitality that is always associated with the Lilac Tournament, we need to thank these extremely generous sponsors: The Spokane Club, Hatch Law offices, Jerry Thew with Centaurus Financial, The Alten Handball Foundation; Steve Dashiell, CPA; (Dan) Murphy Investments; Campbell and Bissell Lawyers; S&S Coatings; Jack & Dan’s Bar and Grill; Ultimate Bagel; Doug Polson; and Svennungsen Law Office.

The 2019 Spokane Club Member’s Tourney is in the Books!

Thanks in large part to member Tod Whitman and his company’s MY24/7 Education.com continuing sponsorship of this event, members were sized up to receive a great commemorative shirt as well as treated to ribs, chicken wings, meatballs, and a buffet of snacks to keep “hangry personalities” away from the tourney!

A Grand team: Grandmother Sue Boinski teamed with Grandson Brenden Archer!

Numbering over 160, Spokane Club members converged on the tennis court for two weekends of competition, socializing, fun and eating during our 2019 Members Only Tennis Tourney. Singles and Mixed Doubles kicked off the first weekend while doubles finished out the second weekend. Over the course of the event, virtually every combination of doubles made it to the court: husband-wife, father-daughter, mother-daughter, father-son, and even grandmother-grandson! These combo possibilities are what make tennis, and specifically this event, unique in the world of sport. No worries about rankings, just out to compete and to have a great time!

What is YOUR Word for 2020!

By Christine Cronin

W

hat is your word? Some say “actions speak louder than words.” I think when words and actions match with positive intent, legitimate power exists. Words are like that. They can unite, or divide, encourage or discourage, be healing or harmful. Words spoken without thought or kindness can scar minds for a lifetime. Conversely, intentional words spoken from a place of caring and compassion may be the North-Star that guides us for the rest of our lives. What we say matters. It matters to our health and well-being, affects those around us and is completely within our control. What is your word? Choose a word for 2020. Spend some time in reflection. How do you want to live this year? How would you like someone else to describe you? What will ground and focus you when the challenges of life appear? I love words and have difficultly choosing just one. My words are transformation and teamwork. I will look at my day and events that transpire as

opportunities to be transformed or to help transform and to collaborate and grow in teamwork. My husband chose the words authentic grit. An authentically gritty person pursues their goals with passion, positivity and perseveres through adversity. They are not afraid of failure but recognize it as a learning opportunity to adjust and grow in pursuit of their dreams. Authentically gritty people set challenging, even seemingly to others unrealistic, goals and pursue them with an intensity and passion that may seem elusive to others. They derive deep meaning from pursuing something for the greater good and their positive living for others creates a network of meaningful relationships that support them when they fall. We all fall. But if we’ve cared well for others you can bet there will be someone there to offer a hand, assuming we have the humility to receive. We now know that “grit” (passion and perseverance toward a goal or dream) is key to success. Angela Duckworth is the leading researcher on grit and you

can take the grit quiz to find out where you are: https://angeladuckworth.com/ grit-scale/ If this piques your interest I highly recommend the book “Getting Grit” by Caroline Adams Miller for evidenced based, practical and applicable strategies for growing grit in anyone. Grit and grace, strength and surrender, passion and perseverance, focus and flow, and above all, love. These are some of my favorites. Put your word in a place you will see it, share it with friends, speak it aloud every day. We become what we say. We don’t need a new you in 2020, we want the real you, the most authentically gritty you that can be. If you’re ready for more than a word, try setting a goal. It was three years ago that I set my seemingly unrealistic pull up goal, which lead to friendship, teamwork and getting stronger than ever. Big goals do that, they inspire others, require help, build community and leave ripples of positive waves in the pursuit. Dream on!
