T

he best job I ever had was during my first year of college when I worked for a little shop in Montrose called “Once Upon A Time.” The shop smelled of fresh paper and lavender and offered the most wonderful assortment of children’s literature available anywhere. The shop had the uncanny habit of drawing, not just children but wideeyed adults through its doors. Grown women in particular floated spellbound through the aisles as though they were the Darling children arriving in Neverland for the first time. As a bookseller, I always enjoyed selecting just the right title for a customer who might be looking for that special gift for a grandchild or to add to her own collection. Each day, I spent a few quiet moments between customers perusing the newest titles on the shelves. Many years have passed since I last stepped through those magical doors into “Once Upon A Time,” but my love of books has only grown. The Christmas season is particularly sentimental as I pull down my cherished books about the most beloved holiday of the year. Here is a list some of the best Christmas stories ever written.

‘The Polar Express’ by Chris Van Allsburg

A young boy waits for the sound of Santa’s sleigh bells on Christmas Eve, but awakens instead to the sound of a train whistle. What follows is a memorable trip to the North Pole and an experience he will never forget.

‘The Crippled Lamb’ by Max Lucado

A tender tale of a crippled lamb who is left behind while his flock goes grazing in a distant field. During the

night, a young couple visit his stable and he helps keep their new little baby warm.

‘The Snowman’ by Raymond Briggs

A boy wakes one morning to find that the snowman he built the day before has come to life. He takes the snowman on a tour of his home and then enjoys a day outdoors in the snowman’s world. There is no text, but this story is brilliantly told through delightful pictures.

‘How the Grinch Stole Christmas’ by Dr. Suess

As the Whos in Whoville prepare for Christmas, the Grinch schemes how to stop Christmas from coming. What he learns is that Christmas is more than gifts and decorations. Christmas is in the heart.

‘The Small One’ by Alex Walsh

Print version of the classic Christmas animated film about a boy and his beloved donkey, Small One. The boy is forced to sell his friend and searches for the perfect master. He finally finds him in a gentle man who needs Small One to carry his pregnant wife to Bethlehem.

‘The Littlest Angel’ by Eric Carle

A farmer dreams of snow and imagines his animals, named One, Two, Three, Four and Five, covered in white. He awakens to find the world covered in real snow, not dream snow. He dons a familiar suit and accompanies his animals to decorate the tree. Children love pushing the button at the end to hear the Christmas jingle.

‘The Best Christmas Pageant Ever’ by Barbara Robinson

A family of rough and rowdy kids learn what Christmas is all about

when they are cast in the local Christmas pageant. This humorous yet touching story has delighted kids of all ages for many years. And, of course, there always are the following classic favorites.

by O. Henry

‘A Christmas Carol’

‘‘Twas The Night Before Christmas’

by Charles Dickens

The wonderful tale of a bitter Ebenezer Scrooge, who is visited by three ghosts that take him through Christmas past, present and future.

‘The Gift of the Magi’

What’s New for the Holidays: Festive, Fashion, Food tiques and “retro” furnishings.

Holiday Food Trends

Inflation has taken a big bite out holiday meal budgets. However, consumers are still looking to serve turkey, ham and roast beef this holiday season. Where consumers are saving is the trend of made-from-scratch sides. Shoppers are increasingly interested in making their own side dishes for their holiday meals, forgoing pre-packaged fare. These traditional sides include comfort foods like mashed potatoes, stuffing, sweet potatoes and green bean casserole. One popular trend this holiday season is French Onion Soup Baked Mac and Cheese, a decadent “take” on the always crowd-pleasing mac and cheese.

hen looking for the latest ideas in home decorating you can’t go wrong by checking in with Etsy, the global online website for makers. Etsy saw searches for wreath sashes doubled; ruffled bedding up by 35%; gingham bedding up by 34%; personalized recipe boxes up by 28%; and holiday cookie cutters up by 24%. This means that “rustic chic” is “hot” this holiday season.

Mantelscaping

Among other “hot” new trends in 2023, mantelscaping is your holiday décor “must do” this year. Mantelscaping is infusing your fireplace mantel with your own personal style and flair. Make sure to mix up the height, shape and texture of your various decorative elements. Add sentimental pieces, like old Christmas cards or family heirlooms, for that personal touch that makes your mantel the eye-catching centerpiece of your holiday home décor. Etsy has also seen an increase for candle lanterns (86%), ceramic trees (67%), and accent ornaments (52%), all items perfect for mantelscaping. If you don’t have a fireplace mantel, use the top of a buffet table, or long coffee table as a substitute. You can also put up a shelf to serve as a mantel in a focal point in your family or living room. Install hooks below the shelf to hang stockings under your “faux” mantel.

Grandpa Chic

In addition to “rustic chic” add “grandpa chic” to your holiday décor checklist. This masculine inspired home decor style is a combination of rich, warm tones, like burgundy, olive green and tobacco brown and traditional material such as dark woods, plaid textiles and leather. The style has become increasingly popular in recent years as people look for ways to add warmth and character to their homes with the use of an-

Courtesy Food Network Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper 1 pound elbow macaroni 1 stick (8 tablespoons) butter 4 onions, thinly sliced 2 teaspoons fresh thyme leaves 1 teaspoon granulated sugar 1 cup white wine 1 beef bouillon cube 1/4 cup all-purpose flour 2 teaspoons mustard powder 1/4 teaspoon cayenne 3 cups milk 1 pound sharp yellow cheddar, grated (about 4 cups) 1 pound Gruyere, grated (about 4 cups) One 6-ounce container French fried onions Preheat the oven to 350F.

Add the pasta to large pot of salted water and cook until just slightly softened, about 6 minutes. Reserve 1 cup pasta cooking water, drain pasta and rinse under cold water. Melt 3 tablespoons of butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Add onions, sprinkle with the thyme, sugar and 1/2 teaspoon pepper and cook, stirring occasionally, until dark brown, about 20 minutes. Add wine and bouillon cube and stir to dissolve the bouillon. Cook until the liquid is reduced by half, about 5 minutes. Set aside. Melt 4 tablespoons butter in a large heavy-bottomed saucepan or Dutch oven over medium heat. Whisk in the flour, mustard powder and cayenne. Cook, whisking constantly, until smooth and slightly golden, about 2 minutes. Whisk in milk. Cook, whisking occasionally, until the sauce begins to boil and thicken, about 7 minutes; remove from heat.

Stir in cheddar and 2 cups of Gruyere until melted. Stir in the pasta and pasta water as needed to make a creamy sauce. Season with salt and pepper. Melt remaining 1 tablespoon butter in the microwave. Brush a 9-by-13-inch metal baking dish pan with melted butter. Spread half the pasta mixture in the prepared dish. Top with the onion mixture in an even layer, then cover with the remaining pasta. Sprinkle remaining 2 cups of Gruyere on top. Bake until heated through and just bubbling, about 20 minutes. Top with the French-fried onions and return to the oven for 5 minutes. Let rest for 10 minutes before serving.

Holiday Cocktails 2023

The must have 2023 Holiday Cocktail is the “Frostbite.” You can find several recipe variations of this cocktail online, but here’s a recipe from a bartender friend. 1 1/2 ounces tequila 1 ounce blue Curaçao liqueur 1/2 ounce white crème de cacao liqueur 1/2 ounce cream Top off with whipped cream Combine all ingredients into tin shaker. Add ice, shake vigorously, strain into champagne glass. Top off with whipped cream and garnish with crushed peppermint candy or a rosemary sprig. Another festive cocktail courtesy of Absolut Vodka is the “Jingle Buck.” 1 ounce Absolut Vodka 3/4 ounce cranberry juice 3/4 ounce lime juice 2 ounces ginger ale Add all ingredients to a glass filled with ice. Stir briefly. Garnish with two fresh cranberries and one rosemary sprig.

Holiday Fashion

This year find your holiday fashion at the local thrift store. Vintage holiday sweaters, cocktail dresses and casual red blouses with black velvet pants are the season’s “must haves.” Classic holiday colors in shades of red and green are popular this year. Don’t forget the bling. “Sparkle” still rules. “Barbie” pink, the hottest color of the summer, also continues in fashion through the holidays, adorned with silver sparkle. Leave the holiday multi-colored light bulb necklace and earrings at home, that’s passe. Also say no to reindeer antlers.

Happy Holidays!

Don’t forget tradition this holiday season, it is always in fashion. 

Ten Tips to Help Beat Holiday Stress this Season By Michelle Sathe Signal Staff Writer

I

f many songs, movies and TV shows are to be believed, the holidays are the most wonderful time of the year. Think scenes of happy families connecting amid mounds of foods and gifts, seemingly without a care in the world. In real life, a significant part of the population finds that the holidays can be the source of stress, fatigue, and irritability. Nearly 40% of people said their stress level increases during the holiday. Top causes for this increase included lack of time and money, pressures of gift-giving, commercialism, and even family gatherings, according to a survey by the American Psychological Association. If you find yourself among that 38%, here are 10 easy tips to help you embrace what’s good about the holidays while eschewing what makes it stressful.

Don’t Overspend

This is one of the most common ways to start the season off on the wrong foot. A poll by the Principal Financial Group found that 53% of people experience financial stress due to holiday spending, even though more than half of those polled had set a budget. Take a hard look at what you can really afford to spend on your loved ones. Allocate an amount for each person on your list and stick to it, no matter how tempting it is to go overboard. Otherwise, you could be setting yourself up for potential debt well into 2024, which isn’t a festive thought.

Rethink Gifts

Does anyone on your list really need another candle, picture frame or sweater? The answer is most likely no. Instead, think outside the box and give your loved ones something they really value, like customized gift certificates for the busy people in your life. Some fun ideas are • a night of babysitting, • a dog walk or two or • going out for a meal of their choice. Of course, homemade food gifts such as cookies never go out of style and can be quite cost-effective. Just make sure to note who’s on a diet that precludes sugar, gluten, or dairy products and adjust any traditional recipes to accommodate their needs.

Reach for Help Whenever Possible

Some people love wrapping gifts. Others (like me), not so much. If you fall into the latter category, consider taking your gifts to a store like Posh Presents SCV, where they will wrap anything from anywhere and do it beautifully. Visit their website at www.PoshPresentsSCV.com/ Hosting a holiday meal? Don’t try to go all Iron

Chef and do everything yourself. Instead, focus on a main dish and ask your guests to bring a side, dessert, drinks, or even napkins, paper plates, and disposable utensils. When the meal ends, ask your guests to help with clean up. Whether it’s washing dishes or taking out the trash, most people love to feel a part of and will be happy to lighten your load.

Indulge with Discretion

Temptations are everywhere at holiday parties, from open bars to rich, decadent buffets to food gifts. Unless you’re allergic to anything, or sober, feel free to indulge a bit. It’s one of the best parts of the season. Just pace yourself, i.e. don’t overdo it to the point where you fall into a food coma and can’t function or get so drunk that you’ll make a fool of yourself. (Of course, if you’re going to be drinking anywhere outside your home, lining up a designated driver or taking a drive share is a must.)

Just say ‘No’

So many parties, so little time. This is where you need to discriminate and determine what is necessary for you to attend professionally or what you want to attend personally. All other invitations are to be declined, with no guilt attached.

Avoid Toxic People

Whether it’s that colleague who is the equivalent of nails on a chalkboard or that annoying relative you have never liked, it’s hard to avoid toxic people at holiday bashes. Make a game plan ahead of each event to deal with potential interludes, such as how to gracefully exit a conversation or creating signals to your partner that you want to move to another area of the room or leave the party altogether.

Make Some ‘Me’ Time

With kids out of school on break and relatives visiting, you may feel a bit overwhelmed. It’s OK to

take some “me” time to center yourself. This could be luxuriating in a bath with music and candles, finding a quiet spot around the house to meditate for five to 20 minutes or going for a nice, long walk (if you have a dog, take him or her with you).

Exercise

The frenzy of the holidays can upend some of your structured self-care time. So as much as you can, stick with your gym or exercise routine to keep stress at bay and get those endorphins going.

Give Back

Theoretically, the holidays are largely about giving and making the world a better place. There’s no better way to do that then volunteering to help someone less fortunate. That can be visiting a lonely senior in a nursing facility or a pet in a shelter that would love some quality time with someone who cares or helping out at a soup kitchen that serves up hot meals during this cold weather. For a group project, consider asking your family or neighborhood to donate their gently used jackets and other clothing, canned food or providing a meal for a low-income family.

Consider New Traditions

If the holidays feel like “Groundhog Day” in an unpleasant way, shake things up. Don’t host the holiday meal this year — go out for dinner instead and invite people you really enjoy spending time with. Or skip town altogether with a fun getaway to the coast or the mountains — Airbnb is a great resource to find a room, condo or house just about everywhere in Southern California. If neither of those options are in your budget, then consider a staycation and find cost-effective ways to enjoy Santa Clarita. Take a hike at Placerita Canyon or one of the many nature trails, go to a matinee or just stay home and binge-watch your favorite shows or movies. Holiday theme optional. 

A Festive Guide to Recycling Right this Holiday Season! By Ken Striplin Santa Clarita City Manager

A

s we embrace the joy and warmth of the holiday season, I want to share some valuable insights on how we can make this time even more special – by giving back to our community and protecting our planet. The holiday season is known for its festive spirit, but it’s also a time when we see approximately 25 percent more waste generated. This year, let’s celebrate responsibly while making a positive impact on our environment. One way to reduce waste is by getting creative with gift wrapping. Instead of traditional paper, consider using reusable items like canvas tote bags, bandanas or scarves. Not only does it add a personal touch to your presents, but it also minimizes your environmental footprint. If you opt for wrapping paper, choose varieties without foil or glitter, as those options can be recycled. Remember, gift bags can be reused, as can much of the wrapping paper and ribbons. Fold them carefully and pack them away with the holiday decorations for use next year. Gift-giving takes center stage during the

holidays, and what better way to show you care than by giving the gift of sustainability? Reusable travel coffee mugs, water bottles or portable bamboo utensils make thoughtful and eco-friendly presents that contribute to a greener future. Let’s also focus on minimizing food waste during our festive gatherings. Plan your menu thoughtfully to determine the right amount of food to prepare. Having reusable containers on hand ensures that leftovers can be shared with guests, minimizing waste and spreading holiday cheer. When it comes to disposing of holiday waste, remember that gift boxes, most wrapping paper, greeting cards and all cardboard packaging are recyclable. Burrtec will collect extra holiday recycling for the week following Christmas – just place the excess in bags next to your regular containers on collection day. Fresh holiday trees and wreaths can find a new purpose after the celebrations. Between December 26, 2023, and January 13, 2024, place your trees and wreaths in the green organics container, or beside it, on your regular collection day. Ensure all ornaments, lights and tree stands are removed, and if your tree is six feet or taller, consider cutting it in half. Unfortunately, flocked trees will not be able to be recycled. For added convenience, three

drop-off locations will be available during the same time period: Central Park, Newhall Community Center and Canyon Country Community Center. Let’s make this holiday season not only festive but also environmentally conscious. By adopting these simple practices, we can collectively reduce our ecological footprint and pave the way for a sustainable future. For more green tips and resources visit GreenSantaClarita.com. Wishing you a joyous and eco-friendly holiday season! Ken Striplin is the City Manager for the City of Santa Clarita and can be reached at kstriplin@ santaclarita.gov. 

Tradition is a Major Part of Hanukkah Celebrations

T

radition is a major component of the Jewish faith, so it’s no surprise that tradition plays such a central role during the celebration of Hanukkah. Although some are quick to note Hanukkah is not one of the major Jewish holidays, it is celebrated in a very public fashion. Hanukkah celebrants make the holiday more high profile by displaying menorahs in prominent locations and participating in holiday meals. Like other Jewish holidays, Hanukkah is shrouded in tradition. Hanukkah means “dedication” or “induction” in Hebrew. The holiday begins on the 25th of Kislev and can occur in either November or December. Also known as the Festival of Lights, Hanukkah includes menorah displays, traditional foods and games and songs. Hanukkah rose to prominence thanks in part to the story of faith and miracle behind its inception. Antiochus IV was a Greek sovereign in control of the region of Syria, Egypt and Palestine, where many Jews resided. Antiochus began to oppress the Jews, prohibiting the practice of the Jewish religion and desecrating the Jewish Temple. Opposition to Antiochus grew, and a group led by Mattathias the

M

Hasmonean and his son, Judah Maccabee, took on the Syrian army. They were successful in their efforts to combat religious oppression, and the Temple was subsequently rededicated. The Talmud states that, at the time of the rededication, there was very little oil left that had not been defiled by the Greeks. This posed a problem because oil was needed to burn the Temple menorah throughout the night every night. However, there was only enough left for one night’s illumination. Miracu-

lously, that oil burned for eight nights, leading to the development of an eight-day festival to commemorate this miracle. Because Hanukkah is about the miracle of the oil and the lasting flame, oil and candles factor heavily in the holiday. A nine-armed menorah called the hanukiah is lit, and one candle is lit on each of the eight nights of the celebration. The last branch of the candelabra holds the shamash (servant) candle. The organization Reform Judaism says the traditional song “Ma’oz Tzur (Rock of Ages)” is sung after the lighting of the candles each night and at other times throughout the holiday. Foods fried in oil, including latkes and jelly doughnuts, are consumed as well. Celebrants play games with a dreidel, a German-based spinning top, and giving to charity is encouraged. Hanukkah is one of the few times of the year when rabbis permit games of chance. The letters atop the dreidel stand for the first letter of each word in the Hebrew statement “Neis gadol hayah sham,” which translates to “A great miracle happened there,” and refers to the defeat of the Syrian army and the rededication of the Temple (MC) 

Creative Ways to Celebrate Hanukkah

any jokes have been shared about the complexity of growing up Jewish surrounded by Christian friends and the overwhelming influence of Christmas come the month of December. Seemingly everywhere you look buildings, stores and homes are decked out in lights and decorations. But Christmas celebrants are not the only ones with reason to be festive this time of year, when Hanukkah is also cause for celebration. Perhaps due to its proximity to Thanksgiving and Christmas, Hanukkah tends to be the most widely celebrated Jewish holiday in America. And because the basis of Hanukkah is rededication to the faith, it very well may be an instrumental celebration for families who may need to find their way back to the roots of their beliefs. Hanukkah celebrations may not feature lavishly decorated trees or scores of celebrants belting out carols, but it bears significance for the millions of people who celebrate the holiday each year. While Hanukkah is steeped in tradition, the following are a handful

of ways you can add a creative spin to your family’s festivities this year. Light One of the major tenets of Hanukkah is how light can shine and lead a person through dark periods. This is typically exemplified by the lighting of the menorah, which is prominently placed in windows or other visible areas of celebrants’ homes. This Hanukkah, spend time with someone who may be dealing with an illness or the loss of a loved one. You may be the light that inspires this person each day. Give candles to friends and family members to symbolize the light that will shine in the future. Oil Another component of Hanukkah celebrations is the focus on how a one-day supply of oil somehow lasted eight days during the rededication of the temple’s menorah. Some people like to get creative in the kitchen, serving fried foods and desserts. Think about giving gifts of oil, such as fragrant essential oils that can be used in potpourri or in the bath or shower. Working alongside their parents, children can see how a wick drenched in oil can serve as an efficient lighting

source and decorate the home with these homemade oil lamps. Twenty-five Bring attention to the number 25, which is significant when celebrating Hanukkah. The word Hanukkah can be divided into two: Chanu, meaning “they rested,” and Kah, which is the numerical value of 25. On the 25th day of the Hebrew month of Kislev, the Maccabees rested from their battle with the Greeks and triumphantly marched into the Holy Temple in Jerusalem. Make 25 a part of celebrations by inviting 25 people to celebrate with you or ask children to make murals with 25 different adornments. Charitable giving Gift-giving is now a component of Hanukkah celebrations, but it wasn’t always. Greater importance was once placed on the lighting of candles to publicize the miracle and evangelize the faith. Some poor people could not afford candles, and these people would go door-to-door for candle funds, or “gelt,” to be able to purchase candles

and kiddush wine. Some Jewish families prefer to give money rather than gifts on Hanukkah to keep with the tradition of Hanukkah gelt. However, families also can incorporate charitable giving in their celebrations as a way to reinforce the customs of giving to the poor. (MC) 

hristmas carols can be heard far and wide from Thanksgiving weekend through Christmas Day. “The 12 Days of Christmas” is one of the most recognizable carols, and for good reason, as the popular song can trace its history back several centuries. Researchers have traced the earliest printed version of the poem on which the song is based all the way back to 1780. That’s three years before the signing of the Treaty of Paris, which officially ended the American Revolutionary War. The song has long been suspected to have

been a way for Catholics in Britain to teach their children the catechism, as the 1700s was a controversial period for Catholicism in the country. However, no documentary evidence exists in support of that theory, and many historians feel it is inaccurate. Others indicate that, while 1780 is likely the first time the poem was printed, the poem is likely much older than that with origins potentially in France or Scotland. What is known is that the version many people recognize today, namely in song form, can be traced to the early twentieth century, when English singer and composer Frederic Austin first popularized the melody for the song. Austin performed that version of the song beginning in 1905, and it was first published in 1909. 

iopics of public figures who rose to prominence in the 20th century are not impersonation contests, yet there’s inevitably a treasure trove of archival footage of the real-life person available on YouTube et al., and I would gently request you check out a few video clips of Leonard Bernstein in advance of seeing Bradley Cooper’s elegant and soaring and beautiful “Maestro.” To be sure, it’s practically Movie Law that modern-day biopics feature an end-credits scene in which we see footage of the subject, and “Maestro” fully embraces that trope — but if you watch just a few slices of TV shows featuring Bernstein you’ll find it’s the perfect appetizer to lead into Cooper’s brilliant performance, in which he captures the look and mannerisms and speech patterns of the great Bernstein without ever delving into an impression. It’s the best acting work of his career. Following Cooper’s assured directorial debut with the deservedly acclaimed remake of “A Star Is Born” (2018), “Maestro” solidifies Cooper’s standing as a skilled filmmaker who this time around embraces a number of stylistic flourishes that augment but never overshadow the story. The production design is exquisite, whether we’re in the Connecticut countryside or Bernstein’s enormous duplex at the Dakota. Attention to detail is nomination-worthy, whether we’re talking about the consistently impressive hair and makeup (the early nonsense about Cooper’s prosthetic nose proves to be just that: nonsense) or the devotion to historical accuracy, e.g., when Bernstein and his wife, the actress Felicia Montealegre (Carey Mulligan, doing spectacularly passionate work), sit down for a remote interview with Edward

Fresh Snack Board

1/3 pound Prosciutto di Parma 1 apple, sliced 1 handful pecans, walnuts or almonds 1/2 cup pomegranate seeds 1/2 cup fig jam 1/2 pound sharp cheddar cheese, sliced crackers On charcuterie board or platter, arrange prosciutto, apple slices, nuts, pomegranate seeds, fig jam and cheddar cheese slices. Serve with crackers.

Prosciutto Pizza

Yield 8 slices Olive oil flour 1 container (16 ounces) store-bought pizza dough 1/4 cup tomato sauce 4 ounces fresh mozzarella, cubed 5 slices Prosciutto di Parma 6 fresh basil leaves Remove dough from refrigerator and let sit at room temperature at least 30 minutes. Preheat oven to 500 F. Grease baking sheet with olive oil. Roll out pizza dough onto floured work surface to form oblong shape about 16 inches long and 12 inches wide. Remove to oiled baking sheet and stretch out edges to fill length of baking sheet. Bake 4 minutes. Remove from oven and evenly spread tomato sauce over surface, leaving 1/2 inch from edges bare. Dot with mozzarella. Bake until edges are golden and mozzarella is bubbling, about 12 minutes. Drape prosciutto over mozzarella. Garnish with fresh basil.

Sweet Potato Rounds Yield 16-20 rounds 2 medium sweet potatoes 2 teaspoons olive oil salt, to taste 2 tablespoons butter 1 bunch fresh sage, stems removed 4 ounces goat cheese 8 slices Prosciutto di Parma, halved

Preheat oven to 425 F. Line baking sheet with foil or parchment paper. Peel and slice sweet potatoes into 1/2-inch rounds. In medium bowl, toss sweet potatoes with oil and lightly season with salt, to taste. Arrange rounds in single layer on prepared pan; bake until sweet potatoes are lightly browned and tender, about 20 minutes, flipping halfway through. In small skillet over medium heat, bring butter to simmer. Add half the sage leaves. Cook until crispy, 2-3 minutes. Remove to paper towel and season lightly with salt, to taste. Repeat with remaining sage leaves. Reserve 2 teaspoons butter. In small food processor, combine goat cheese and reserved butter; whirl until smooth. To make rounds, remove goat cheese to plastic ziptop bag. Cut off one corner and pipe small dollops of cheese onto each round. Top with half slice prosciutto and one crispy sage leaf.

Crudites Platter Platter:

8 asparagus water 2 soft-boiled eggs 5 baby carrots, halved lengthwise 4 radishes with tops, halved lengthwise 1 head little gem lettuce, quartered 6-8 slices Prosciutto di Parma

Dip 2 teaspoons white miso 1 tablespoon lemon juice 1 teaspoon water 1/2 cup full-fat Greek yogurt 2 tablespoons chopped herbs (dill, tarragon or parsley) 1/4 teaspoon salt fresh black pepper, to taste To make platter Trim asparagus. To blanch, bring pot of water to boil and place asparagus in pot 2-3 minutes. While asparagus is cooking, fill large bowl with ice water. After 3 minutes, plunge asparagus in ice bath and let cool. To soft-boil eggs, bring pot of water to boil. Gently place room temperature eggs in water and simmer 3-4 minutes. Remove eggs with slotted spoon and cool under running water. Serve asparagus and eggs alongside baby carrots, radishes and little gem lettuce. Drape prosciutto slices over some vegetables and between others. Tips to Protect Yourself From Text Message Cyberattacks

E

very day, cybercriminals create new methods of obtaining private financial information from unsuspecting individuals, most commonly employing tactics like emailing strangers and convincing them to either share personal information or take an action that compromises their systems and devices. Known as “phishing,” these cybercrime attempts can also come by way of short message service (SMS) or text messaging, and when they do, it’s called “smishing.” Scammers use smishing to prompt victims to click on internet links or send classified or personal information through texts and other messaging apps, making individuals vulnerable to identity theft and even extortion. However, understanding their methods can help you protect yourself. Here’s what to know:

Attacks Are Getting More Sophisticated

Cybercriminals often use a tactic called spoofing, where they impersonate a known sender or transmit messages from a legitimate number. Even if you know the sender, it’s still important to verify the message’s legitimacy before responding, opening an attachment, or clicking on a link that could potentially compromise your device. Additionally, the ever-growing capabilities of generative artificial intelligence (AI) tools have made it easier for scammers to develop smishing attempts that closely mirror conversation, making it simpler and more affordable to distribute cyberattacks successfully to a large audience. “Whereas previous smishing and phishing messages often didn’t make sense, as generative AI advances, these messages contain fewer grammatical or spelling mistakes. As a result, users are less able to distinguish them from legitimate communications,” says Raina Kanakis, a security specialist with PNC’s Global Security Fusion Center.

Simple Precautions

Vigilance is key, especially as attacks become more sophisticated.

Many companies, such as PNC Bank, have established resources to enable customers to verify the legitimacy of text messages appearing to come from them. By referencing PNC’s Short Codes page for example, you can verify whether a text message originated from a legitimate short code, helping you detect and avoid possible impersonation fraud. Use these additional strategies to help thwart smishing attempts: 1. If you are not expecting the message, proceed with caution. 2. Do not immediately respond. 3. Do not click on any links within a text message. Navigate to the URL using a different means to validate it. 4. If the message appears to come from a familiar company, contact them on a different channel to confirm legitimacy. 5. Getting a text and subsequent call does not increase legitimacy. Hang up and call the company or financial institution directly using a known telephone number. 6. Screenshot and send any suspicious messages appearing to come from a company to them to verify and alert. 7. To report smishing to all mobile telecom carriers, screenshot and send the message to 7726. For added protection, use the “Report Junk” feature on your mobile carrier’s system. 8. Visit the FCC website for more information on how to avoid smishing scams. (SPT) 

Invest in Your Skin Health This Winter

I

f you’re like many people, you may view the change in seasons as a sign that you can give up your skin protection routine. Experts say that everyone, regardless of gender or lifestyle, should be careful not to neglect their skin health in winter. “Don’t let your guard down in winter. Not only are you still being exposed to sunlight and pollution during these colder months, but there are sources of free radicals indoors, too, which may have negative, aging effects on the skin. Free radicals can damage the skin’s cell function and DNA, and DNA changes can cause mutations that could increase the risk of skin cancer,” says New York City dermatologist, Rachel Nazarian, MD FAAD. To invest in your skin health this winter, and all year long, Dr. Nazarian offers the following tips: Keep up the SPF routine Don’t stow that bottle of sunscreen away. Apply-

ing a topical broad spectrum SPF on a daily basis can protect skin while you’re enjoying time outdoors, and from the incidental exposure that occurs through a window indoors, like while driving.

free radical damage, taking a supplement like Heliocare all year long is an excellent precaution to help your body protect itself from the damaging effects of free radicals ,” says Dr. Nazarian. To learn more, visit heliocare.com. Put the device down Protect your skin from excessive exposure to the visible light emitted from digital screens like cellphones and laptops. To do so, find small, easy ways to limit your device usage, such as reading a physical book instead of using an e-reader, or by playing records instead of playing DJ on your phone. You can also reduce exposure by simply turning the brightness down on your devices. Sleep tight During sleep, your body works to repair organs, including your skin. Getting high-quality, deep sleep each night is essential for healthy skin and a healthy body. According to The Sleep Foundation, the best temperature for sleep is 65 degrees Fahrenheit, even in winter when it’s tempting to turn up the thermostat to toastier temperatures. You can also promote good sleep by keeping alcohol and caffeine consumption in check, and by turning to sleep apps that soothe users into slumber with meditation and white noise. To help keep skin healthy and radiant, don’t neglect it in the winter months. For best results, ensure your care routine is both comprehensive, and year-round. (SPT) 

While “Barbie” generated more money at the box office than “Oppenheimer,” both were huge hits that gave a big boost to the suffering movie theater business after they lost so much money during the pandemic. For those who missed either or both films this past summer, you won’t have to wait much longer before watching them at home. “Oppenheimer,” directed by Christopher Nolan and starring Cillian Murphy, is streaming on Amazon Prime Video. “Barbie,” directed by Greta Gerwig and starring Margot Robbie, is already available to purchase and rent digitally through Prime Video, but at a hefty price. If you can wait a little longer, the movie will be available to stream on Max sometime this fall. 

actor, so it’s possible O’Loughlin just wanted a break. There’s also a chance that O’Loughlin, who is originally from Australia, could end up on the upcoming “NCIS: Sydney” series, which recently debuted on CBS. The cast for the first season has already been established, but in an interview with the new series’ creator, Morgan O’Neill, TVLine. com asked why O’Neill didn’t cast the seemingly available — and popular — O’Loughlin. “Look, we haven’t written off the possibility of him popping up,” replied O’Neill. In “NCIS: Sydney,” the U.S. Agents team up with the Australian Federal Police in a “multinational task force to keep naval crimes in check in the most contested patch of ocean on the planet.” Despite being O’Loughlin-less, the cast looks stellar with Olivia Swann (“Legends of Tomorrow”) and Todd Lasance (“Spartacus: War of the Damned”) leading the pack.

he busiest shopping days of the 2023 holiday season are on the horizon. Industry experts point out that knowing these dates in advance can help you score great deals — or beat the crowds — depending on your shopping priorities. “Amid inflation, the return of student loan repayments and other factors that could impact holiday spending, many consumers will be bargain hunting this year. Since retailers are likely to plan promotions and experiences around the busiest shopping days of the year, if you’re on a budget, you should take note of when these days occur and adjust your plans accordingly,” says Brian Field, global leader of retail consulting and analytics at Sensormatic Solutions, a retail solutions provider of Johnson Controls. “And of course, it’s helpful to know these dates if you simply wish to avoid bumper-to-bumper parking lots and crowded store aisles.”

Help Make Your Poinsettias Last Longer

P

oinsettias are synonymous with the holiday season. These colorful plants brighten up homes with their vibrant hues in variations of red, white and pink, making them a holiday decoration many people cannot live without. While they’re most visible during the often chilly holiday season, poinsettias prefer warm weather. Poinsettias are native to Central America and originally flourished in an area of southern Mexico. The Aztecs used the plant for decorative and medicinal purposes. The poinsettia may have remained a regional plant if not for the efforts of Joel Roberts Poinsett, who was the first United States Ambassador to Mexico under President James Madison. Poinsett, who would later found the Smithsonian Institution, had a love of botany and became enamored with the brilliant red plants he saw in Mexico. Eventually, Poinsett began growing the plants at home in South Carolina, and friends and others soon coveted them. Poinsettias are beautiful and the bracts (modified leaves) can be vibrantly colored. That signature vibrancy is why many people would like to preserve their poinsettias to last beyond the New Year, which is possible with the right care. The following are some tips, courtesy of Mother Nature’s Network, Habersham Gardens, Oregon Live, and Phoenix Flower Shops, to keep poinsettias thriving past the holiday season.

◊ Start with healthy plants that have

full leaves, bracts and deep colors.

◊ Poinsettias do best when the tem-

perature is between 65 and 75 F. Temperatures below that or drafts from cold windows can cause leaves to drop.

◊ Position the plant in a room that

gets indirect sunlight for at least six hours per day. If direct sunlight can’t be avoided, diffuse the light with a sheer curtain.

Christmas Lights We carry a huge selection of indoor and outdoor light sets. Shop early for best selection.

◊ Poinsettias need well-drained soil.

Overwatering or allowing roots to sit in wet soil can cause the leaves to fall off prematurely. Water thoroughly only when the pot looks dry. In households with temperatures around 70 F, the plant should be watered about once a week.

◊ Fertilize the plant after the bloom-

ing season with a balanced, all-purpose fertilizer.

Let our Christmas Shop help you brighten and decorate your holidays!

◊ Try placing poinsettias in or near a

bathroom, as they prefer high humidity. It may be possible to get poinsettias to rebloom next season. Allow the poinsettias to dry out a little more in the spring. In May, cut about four inches from each stem to produce a lush, full plant during the winter. The plants can be moved outside in June and during the summer, but keep them away from direct sunlight. Return the poinsettias indoors beginning around October. Make sure the plants get at least 12 hours of darkness per day for around eight weeks in October and November. This will help them develop a deep hue and bloom on time for Christmas. (MC) 

Six Holiday Gifts for Teens and Young Adults

ne of the best parts of the holidays is being together with those you love, and for many families that time together involves the exchanging of gifts among loved ones young and old. Finding the right gift for everyone can be a challenge, especially if teenagers and young adults are on your shopping list. It seems like social media feeds are constantly filled with a new tech item, style, pastime or trend, making it more challenging to pick out gifts for the young ones on gift lists. This year, consider some on-trend gift ideas like Jelly Belly Jelly Beans - to show appreciation for the Gen-Zers in your life with presents and stocking stuffers that can win them over.

New in Tech

As one of the most popular categories of gifts for teens and one that’s always evolving, deciding which devices and gadgets to gift can be hard.

Consider your loved ones’ hobbies and interests to make the job easier; for example, if they’re music lovers or podcast fanatics, wireless earbuds or headphones are a perfect option. If social butterflies are on your shopping list, portable phone chargers and smartphone accessories like a pop-out phone grip can make sure they’re one step ahead of their next photo or social post.

For Boba and Candy Lovers

Many Gen-Zers love a good cup of bubble tea or boba swag, so feed their cravings with an option like Jelly Belly Boba Milk Tea jelly beans. With gift boxes, snack bags and more, these delicious

treats made for candy lovers provide a perfect balance of tea, tapioca and sweetness in five true-to-life milk tea flavors: Mango, Taro, Matcha, Strawberry and Thai Milk Tea jelly beans. Find these treats at JellyBelly. com where you can purchase online or locate a store near you.

For teens heading to college or young adults venturing out on their own, consider gifting items to spruce up their new spaces. You can give them a helping hand to start their next chapter with fun decor items like throw pillows and blankets or add life to their new homes with stylish wall art or flower subscriptions. For simple reminders of home, consider candles with their favorite scents or aromatherapy diffusers and essential oils to add a touch of calm to the chaos of heading out on their own.

Play to Their Hobbies

Help them embrace their talents

and favorite activities whether it’s art, reading, cooking, gaming, playing sports or mastering instruments. New paint kits and supplies can help young Picasso’s take their art to the next level while a new appliance or cookbook can provide an upgrade for avid home chefs.

The Gift of Music

Whether they have a favorite band or are up-and-coming musicians themselves (or both), give the gift of music with fun ways to enjoy their favorite songs. Record players and vinyl records are making a major comeback while portable speakers allow music lovers to take their favorite sounds wherever they go. A subscription to a streaming service can be perfect for casual listeners or, if you’re looking to splurge, consider concert tickets.

Outdoor Adventures

From jogging around the neighborhood to exploring nearby parks and trails, outdoor enthusiasts can never have enough gear. Runners are always searching for the latest sneaker launch or fitness tracker to keep on pace with their goals while more casual enjoyers of the outdoors may love a new water bottle, picnic blanket or beach bag. ho doesn’t have a space at home that serves as a catchall for items that seemingly have no other home? For many, this storage wasteland where items go to be forgotten tends to be the garage. Before long, clutter can overwhelm the space and create an eyesore. Garage clutter also makes the space less functional by making it harder to park a vehicle or store equipment. Organizing a garage takes work, but the end result can improve the appearance, free up space, make work more efficient, and make it easier to find and use tools more readily. Here are some ways to get started on organizing your garage. Start with Cleaning and Culling One of the first steps when organizing a garage is to thoroughly analyze what is needed and what can be removed from the garage. If items belong elsewhere, such as in a shed or the basement, move these items first. Discard damaged or broken items. Next, move on to tools or gear that hasn’t been used in some time. Will you use it again? If the item has been collecting dust for years, you likely already know the answer to that question. Pile all items in the driveway so you have a clean slate with which to start. Measure the room to figure out the dimensions so you’ll know how much wall space is available for storage.

Free up floor space The ultimate goal of a garage storage renovation is to make floor space available, according to Stacey Schwei-

ger of Sunshine Organizing. Lifting items off the floor makes access easier, and protects items should there be a flood or leaks. A combination of wall shelves, overhead shelves, cabinets, and wall hooks can help homeowners create more floor area. Organization becomes easier when everything has a designated space where it can be easily returned to. Consider Weight When investing in shelving and racks, remember that many of the items stored in garages tend to be heavy. It’s important to ensure that shelves and hooks are heavy-duty and able to withstand the weight of pressure put on them. Verify the maximum weight so that racks will not buckle or tip over and cause issues. Use Overhead Space Overhead storage can be reserved for items that aren’t used frequently, such as seasonal decorations or luggage. Out of Sight Some items should be stored out of sight and beyond the reach of children and pets. Cabinets and containers can be used and locked to secure materials, such as fertilizers, paints, solvents, and other chemicals. Additional Ideas Magnets, pegboards, organization bins and systems, and similar products can be used to corral small or errant items like hand tools, fasteners and more. Garage organization will take some planning and time, but the end result can be well worth the effort. (MC) 

Too Much Lawlessness on SCV Streets Another death on our Santa Clarita streets. We have a crisis all over this country with the slaughter of pedestrians and bikers and we need to call it for what it is. As a victim of out-of-control, lawless driving that resulted in my having to close my business five years ago and live with a daily struggle to stay out of a wheelchair, I am acutely aware of the speeding, reckless driving, failure to obey traffic laws and indifference of our city to take this problem seriously. Almost every day my husband and I go to our wonderful Henry Mayo gym, which is 2.6 miles from our home. There are 14 stoplights, which means it is stop-and-go all the way down there. Drivers speed from light to light, weaving in and out, not signaling that they are turning into your lane, turning right without stopping. They pass you just so they can get to the red light one second before you! The speed limit on McBean Parkway is 45 mph but drivers go 55-65 and act like they are on Interstate 5. Santa Clarita is not alone. This is a national emergency. But it has to be handled locally. First we need to lower the speed limits. Why should we have 45-50 mph limits when people ignore the posted speed limit? We need to have law enforcement out continually ticketing people. We need to reinstate the cameras at major intersections such as McBean and Valencia Boulevard and ticket lawbreakers but with small fines that increase incrementally with continued infractions. We need to eliminate the right turn on red privilege because at least 40% of turners ignore this law. This resulted in my experiencing another very serious injury last October that almost did me in. We need the city to constantly and loudly broadcast that lawless driving will not be tolerated. I have always been an avid walker. We bought our house in 2000 so I could walk to work in a half-hour. When I was forced to retire because of the lawless Santa Clarita man, I walked endlessly to stay out of a wheelchair but now I would never consider walking on our streets because of how out of control drivers are. Thank goodness we have our gym. I implore the city to take this seriously. No one is entitled to break the law. Carole Lutness Valencia

Homelessness Continues to Rise Thank you to Jonathan Kraut for his revealing Nov. 28 column, “Real Homeless Solutions Not Sought.” Indeed, despite politicians touting they are effectively housing those who are homeless, the number coming into homelessness continues to rise. Getting into the weeds of the statistics alluded to by Jonathan Kraut, the number of homeless in the age group 55 and older increased 16%, while for veterans the number increased 25%! Political policies can improve these numbers, but adverse governmental decisions can make it worse, ultimately costing taxpayers more money. Cutting Social Security, Medicare, or veteran benefits will definitely have an adverse effect on older adults and those who served, putting some of them on the street. We as citizens already have the ability to impact homelessness, but without public oversight of political leaders, adverse policy decisions resulting in program cuts could exacerbate the worsening homeless crisis. Truth, Cause and Effect By David Hegg

I

n logic there is a fallacy known as non sequitur. This Latin phrase simply means “does not follow” and describes a situation where a supposed “effect” actually “does not follow” from its supposed cause. Here is an example – absurd to be sure – of a non sequitur: Where does wind come from? It obviously is caused by the leaves of the trees waving. When the leaves wave, the movement causes the wind to blow. We know this to be true because, when we landed men on the moon there was no wind because there were no trees! Unfortunately, not all non sequiturs are as easy to spot. It is increasingly the case that our society is unable to distinguish improperly argued cause and effect. In fact, we’ve come to believe one tragic non sequitur to be gospel truth. Here it is: If I get hurt in some way (effect), then someone did something evil (cause), and must pay. We have become a no-fault society. Bad things are happening, but it is always someone else’s fault. In fact, any negative thing that brings pain or inconvenience into life is almost always chalked up to someone’s error or malice. What is even more aggravating is the fact that, if I get hurt by something or someone, it is a given in our society that those doing the hurting are evil and must be brought to account. I am thinking primarily of interaction in the area of communication. It has gotten to the place where telling the truth puts you at risk of being labeled as insensitive or worse. But we all know that sometimes the truth hurts. Correction is often accompanied by pain. Just ask the physician who must set a broken bone. And the same can be true in relationships, be they in business or family. The Apostle Paul found out the hard way when he had to reprove the folks in Galatia. In Galatians 4:16 he asked the serious but rhetorical question: “Have I become

you enemy by telling you the truth?” Too often it is just that simple. Truth-telling, in an attempt to set a crooked situation straight, may cause pain and, in our society, this, apparently, justifies retaliation. The truth-teller becomes the enemy, the insensitive perpetrator. The one in need of correction becomes the innocent victim whose pain is evidence of a great crime. But it goes even further. Being hurt apparently gives one a license to respond poorly. Most often those in pain choose not to discuss the issue, but react out of their pain and launch personal attacks. We see this in our worlds of business, politics and personal relationships. The truth that needs to be recovered is that pain is often either self-inflicted, or connected to needed correction. The correction didn’t cause the pain; it merely uncovered the error, bringing it to the surface. When delivered in love, truth deals with a sliver that, left undiscovered, would fester and bring about greater pain in the future. Lastly, alongside the fallacy that the presence of pain is evidence of evil action lies the equally destructive belief that all pain is, itself, evil. We are fast becoming a nation addicted to emotional pain-killers. We are anesthetizing ourselves to death and demanding a pain-free life, pain-free relationships and pain-free conversations. But pain is often the indicator used by both body and mind to let us know something is wrong. And we had better get back to realizing that some of the time our own actions, attitudes, or ideas are to blame. It is time to reclaim the necessary truth that all too often we are the cause of our own ill effects. Local resident David Hegg is senior pastor of Grace Baptist Church. “Ethically Speaking” appears Sundays. 
