NEWS UPDATE A GUIDE TO FOOD WASTE RECYCLING It is always best to prevent food waste in the first place by planning out your meals and only buying what you need but sometimes food needs to be disposed of because it spoils, includes inedible peels and skins or you just can’t finish what’s on your plate. In this case, food waste recycling is the best option to keep food out of landfills. Follow the guidelines below to recycle your food waste properly! RECYCLE

IMPORTANT INFORMATION

ORGANICS

GARBAGE

All food waste must be bagged separately and placed in your green organics cart alongside any loose yard trimmings and other green waste. Sometimes organic materials require different processing methods; such as food waste vs. yard waste, depending on the facility that processes them. At this time, residents of Santa Clarita must separate food waste, into any type of plastic bag that can tie shut before placing it into their organics cart.

DO S

’

DON TS

• Pet waste, including cat litter • Raw meat or seafood • Liquids • Recyclable items like hard plastic, cans or plastic bottles • Hazardous waste

• Eggshells • Cooked meat and seafood • Coffee grounds • Plate scrapings, leftovers and expired foods • Food soiled paper including napkins, paper egg cartons, non-coated bags, plates or cups and coffee and tea filters • Pet food

IDEA! A lot of food and household items like bread, produce and newspapers are packaged in plastic bags. Consider reusing bags that already exist from household products to bag food waste!

San Diego’s 59-Mile Scenic Drive

ighthouse

Loma L Old Point SanDiego.org

T

his 59-mile scenic drive loops its way through San Diego’s charming neighborhoods and visits unique attractions and natural wonders. Enjoy sweeping, panoramic views of the coastline, the shimmering yacht-dotted bay, downtown’s skyline, Mexico and the surrounding mountains along the way. If you want to cover the entire trip in one adventure, carve out at least three hours, but you might need a fews days if you want to make leisurely stops at various destinations. Blue and yellow signs bearing a white seagull mark the drive every quarter mile.

San Diego Visitor Center

Start downtown and gather maps, brochures and Visitor Guides at the San Diego Visitor Information Center, operated by Old Town Trolley Tours. Located at 996 North Harbor Drive (south of the Broadway Pier). Open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. The start of this scenic drive celebrates San Diego as a seaport city. See the massive bay filled with aircraft carriers, cruise ships, historic sailboats and private yachts. Head north on Harbor Drive, past the Broadway Pier, where you can catch a ferry across to Coronado or explore the bay on a harbor excursion. Next is the Cruise Ship Terminal, where some of the world’s finest ships call on San Diego. Further along the Embarcadero, the tall masts of beautiful historic ships designate Maritime Museum of San Diego, one of the world’s top collections that includes the ferryboat Berkeley, built in 1898; the luxury yacht Medea, built in Scotland; the Star of India, the world’s oldest active sailing ship, built in 1863, which has circled the globe 27 times; and, when she’s in port, the San Salvador, a replica of explorer Juan Rodriquez Cabrillo’s 1542 flagship that discovered San Diego Bay.

Harbor Island,

Take the exit marked “Harbor Island” and do

Balboa P ark a loop of the island, which affords spectacular views of San Diego Bay, Point Loma, the Coronado Bridge and downtown.

Spanish Landing and Shelter Island

Return to Harbor Drive, bear left, and continue driving west along Harbor Drive past Spanish Landing Park, a nice spot for biking or a picnic. Ahead at Scott Street make a left, followed by another left onto Shelter Island Drive. Most of San Diego’s sport fishing fleet is docked in this area. Take a loop around Shelter Island, home to hotels, restaurants and marinas. On the tip of the island you will find the “Yokohama Friendship Bell,” representing Yokohama, Japan, one of San Diego’s sister cities.

Point Loma

From Shelter Island Drive make a left turn back on Scott Street, then a right turn at Talbot Street and head up the hill. Turn left onto Canon Street, and then make a left at Catalina Boulevard, where the road eventually turns into Cabrillo Memorial Drive. The peninsula is home to a seaside residential community, military bases and a national cemetery. Striations of white gravestones of the Fort Rosecrans Cemetery line both sides of the street as you head out to the tip of Point Loma.

Cabrillo National Monument

Continue driving to the Cabrillo National Monument, named for Portuguese explorer Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo. On September 28, 1542, he sailed into what is now known as San Diego Bay. Historians believe he docked on Point Loma’s east shore, the first landing by a European in present-day California. Point Loma has been described as “where California began.” The Old Point Loma Lighthouse began operating here in 1855; though it’s no longer in use, it is open for viewing. (In 1891, another lighthouse was built at sea level and still operates today.) The tip of Point Loma is the most southwestern point of the continental U.S., and an excellent perch to watch

the gray whales migrate south to Mexico during the winter months. You can also visit the tide pools, join in a ranger walk, explore the museum and drink in the panoramic views of the harbor, city and Mexico.

Ocean Beach

Return to Cabrillo Memorial Drive whose name eventually changes to Catalina Boulevard. Continue along Catalina and turn left at Hill Street. Follow Hill and then turn right at Cordova Street, which becomes Sunset Cliffs Boulevard. As you continue along Sunset Cliffs, you will enter the bohemian seaside community of Ocean Beach. Take a short side trip to the Ocean Beach Municipal Fishing Pier by making a left turn onto Newport Avenue. The pier is an excellent spot for fishing, bird watching or seeing surfers ride the waves. Stroll along Newport Avenue for shopping or a bite to eat.

Mission Bay Aquatic Park

Return to and continue driving along Sunset Cliffs Boulevard for a visit to Mission Bay Aquatic Park, a 4,600-acre aquatic playground with 27 miles of beaches. To reach the park area, follow Sunset Cliffs Boulevard to West Mission Bay Drive. Follow signs to West Mission Bay Drive; it turns into Ingraham Street. You’ll see the exit for SeaWorld San Diego here. Continue driving North on Ingraham Street, across two bridges. At the second bridge, which crosses over Fisherman’s Channel, turn right onto Cr own Point Drive. From here you can see wind surfers and catamarans zipping across the water. To explore the area further, take a walk or bike ride on the pathway around the bay, or glide across the water on a kayak or stand up paddleboard.

Soledad Mountain

Follow Crown Point Drive and turn left at Lamont Street, which traverses the residential areas of Crown Point and Pacific Beach. At the intersection of Beryl Street, the name will change to Soledad Road. Drive up the hill past Kate Sessions Park

La Jolla Cove (which has a nice playground) and turn left onto Soledad Mountain Road. Travel .8 miles and turn right onto La Jolla Scenic Drive that weaves through one of the exclusive residential areas of La Jolla. Look for the turnoff to Mount Soledad Park. Climb up the Veterans Memorial to the Cross for one of San Diego’s most soul-stirring views. From this lookout point, you can see San Diego County for miles in every direction. If timed right, it’s a wonderful spot to watch the sun sink into the Pacific.

UC San Diego

As you leave the park turn right on Via Capri, drive down the hill, and turn left on Hidden Valley Road. This hillside residential area of La Jolla offers spectacular ocean views. At La Jolla Parkway, go through the intersection and follow the signs to Torrey Pines Road. Follow it up the hill and through the canyon and then left on North Torrey Pines Road. On the right is the beautiful University of California, San Diego campus, known for its spectacular architecture, several Nobel Prize-winning faculty members and contemporary art installations.

Birch Aquarium at Scripps and Salk Institute

While you are in the UCSD area, you can take two short side trips from the marked route. To visit the Birch Aquarium at Scripps, turn left from North Torrey Pines Road onto Expedition Way and follow signs to the aquarium, home to marvelous kelp tanks, Pacific Ocean marine life habitats, sea dragons and more. When you leave the aquarium parking lot, turn left onto North Torrey Pines Road. Then continue north along North Torrey Pines Road, past the Salk Institute for Biological Studies, named after Dr. Jonas Salk, who developed the polio vaccine. Just beyond the institute is the Torrey Pines Glider Port (off Torrey Pines Scenic Drive) where hang gliders soar along the jagged cliffs and sea. When leaving, make a U-TURN and then turn right on North Torrey Pines Road and head south, down the hill, along La Jolla Shores Drive.

La Jolla Cove Park and La Jolla Cave

Continue along La Jolla Shores Drive and turn right onto Torrey Pines Road. Turn right at Pros-

Vet Memorial Mount Soledad pect Street, an upscale boutique shopping street referred to as the “Rodeo Drive of San Diego.” Turn right onto Coast Boulevard and head down to the La Jolla Cove, an enchanting spot for swimming, snorkeling with the orange Garibaldi fish and sea cave kayaking. Further south along the coast is the Children’s Pool, a popular gathering place for snoozing harbor seals and swimming. From the Cove, you can walk up Cuvier Street to the elegant shopping and dining district around Prospect Street and Girard Avenue.

Pacific Beach

Follow Coast Boulevard, past the Museum of Contemporary Art, and then turn left onto La Jolla Boulevard. Keep going through the charming beach community of Bird Rock. As you reach the bottom of the hill, the street name will change to Mission Boulevard. As you proceed, on your right is Pacific Beach, a confluence of sunbathing, surfing and SoCal culture. For a taste of the San Diego beach scene, stroll, bike or rollerblade along Ocean Front Walk (stop and make a right at Diamond Street). Watering holes and snack shops line this street that hosts a carnival of colorful characters who make for great people watching.

Mission Beach

Continue driving along Mission Boulevard into the seaside community of Mission Beach. Just past the roller coaster, turn right at the light, and park your car in the lot. Explore Belmont Park and enjoy an adrenaline-thumping ride on the Giant Dipper built in 1925. Play laser tag, take a dip in the ocean, or stop at one of the seaside restaurants or shops located along the boardwalk.

Old Town State Historic Park

Exit the parking lot and head east on West Mission Bay Drive, following the signs for Sports Arena Boulevard. Drive under the freeway overpass and turn left at the first stoplight to continue along Sports Arena Boulevard. Bear left onto Rosecrans Street and go under another freeway overpass. At the stoplight the street name will change to Taylor Street. For a walk back in time, Old Town San Diego State Historic Park awaits on the right with shopping bazaars, cantinas, adobes and museums.

Old Town San Diego This historic park represents San Diego’s Hispanic heritage and merging of cultures from 1821 to 1872, when this area was the center of San Diego. You can also visit charming Heritage Park Row, where a number of Victorian buildings scheduled for demolition were relocated.

Serra Museum and Presidio Park

Continue driving along Taylor Street. Turn right on Presidio Drive, drive up the hill and turn left on Presidio Drive. Visit the Serra Museum, named for Father Junipero Serra, the Franciscan friar who established Alta California’s first mission and presidio in 1769. The Spanish Revival-style museum (built in 1928/29) displays artifacts and photographs depicting the early days of San Diego. After visiting the Serra Museum, continue up Presidio Drive and turn left at Arista Street. Turn right at Fort Stockton Drive. You are now driving through Mission Hills, one of San Diego’s first suburbs, and a charming residential area with great Spanish-Revival architecture. Turn right at Goldfinch Street. Continue one block and turn left onto Washington Street. You are now in Hillcrest, which attracts a large LGBT community, as well as many others drawn by the rich selection of trendy boutiques, breweries, art galleries and excellent eateries.

Balboa Park

Turn right on First Avenue and then left onto Laurel Street, which becomes El Prado and delivers you into Balboa Park, the largest urban park with cultural institutions in North America. Named for the Spanish explorer Vasco Nunez de Balboa, who discovered the Pacific Ocean in 1513, Balboa Park is cultural gem. Many of the park’s lovely buildings are examples of ornate Spanish Colonial Revival architecture, constructed for the Panama-California Exposition (1915-16), and also used for the California-Pacific International Exposition in 1935. Amplify Autumn Home Appeal Inside and Out

W

Five home renovation projects to tackle this fall.

ith lower temperatures and milder conditions, fall provides a perfect opportunity to tackle that home renovation to-do list. Whether you plan on making minor improvements or wholesale changes are on the horizon, taking on a few DIY projects can help you boost your home’s curb appeal (and its value) while also prepping for colder weather in the days ahead. Making investments now — like putting time and money toward long-term energy efficiency — can pay off down the road, whether you’re planning for a potential sale or simply looking to get more enjoyment out of your home. Plus, many exterior upgrades can be completed by homeowners, meaning there’s no need to hire a professional when it’s time to give your home a refresh. Beautify those dull areas, boost resale value and add comfort with these ideas from the experts at Westlake Royal Building Products, a manufacturer of high-quality, low-maintenance products designed to meet the specifications and needs of building professionals, homeowners, architects, engineers and distributors.

Add or Replace Shutters

As a classic exterior design element, shutters can add instant charm to your home. With a variety of materials and colors to choose from, you can add shutters that suit your style and budget to give your home a more polished look. If it’s already adorned with shutters, consider updating them with newer styles for a fresh appearance.

Upgrade with Stone Veneer

Natural and textured home trends continue to rise, leading many building pros and homeowners

to gravitate toward stone veneer, or manufactured stone, as it can replicate the look of real stone. The wide range of exterior and interior applications means you can add comfort, character and beauty while complementing your existing style. Consider an option like Versetta Stone from Westlake Royal Building Products, which offers homeowners an authentic, hand-crafted look in a panelized format that’s easy to install with nails and screws. There’s no need to paint, coat or seal once installed for a low-maintenance solution for accent walls, fireplaces, siding, entryways and walkways.

Refresh Porch Columns

Routine cleaning is one way to maintain porch columns, but if they’re rotting or splitting, consider PVC porch column wraps for a visual transformation. Easy and often affordable, they’re durable and decorative to fit existing columns or poles and can be painted to match your exterior color palette. They’re resistant to pests, moisture and

weather damage for long-lasting and nearly maintenance-free upgrades.

Invest in Insulated Siding

Good insulation is key to keeping your home warm, cozy and weather-proof during colder months. While there are many ways to upgrade the insulation of your house, some homeowners are turning to insulated siding for a long-term solution. Long-lasting, weather-proof, durable and aesthetically pleasing, CraneBoard Solid Core Siding from Westlake Royal Building Products offers a cost-efficient way to beat the cold. It’s low maintenance, built to last and withstands temperature fluctuations and hurricane force winds for a highly functional option to keep cold out for years to come.

Update the Driveway

Whether you’re looking to make some simple updates or it’s time for a complete renovation, showing your driveway some love can significantly improve your home’s curb appeal. Adding an address post with a hanging basket or planting trees, shrubbery or flowers along the sides lends immediate aesthetic improvement. For added low-light visibility and visual appeal, install lights along the perimeter to help the greenery stand out in the evening. If you’re ready for a major overhaul, consider upgrading the driveway using cobblestone, pavers or stamped concrete. To find more ways to boost curb appeal this fall, visit WestlakeRoyalBuildingProducts.com. (Family Features) 

Shaqtoberfest Halloween Festival

Queen Mary, 1126 Queens Hwy, Long Beach 90802 Info shaqtoberfest.com Returning for a second year to the notoriously haunted Queen Mary, Shaqtoberfest is an immersive Halloween festival featuring haunted trails, live entertainment, themed bars and lounges, carnival rides and more. The RMS Queen Mary was originally designed as a luxury cruiseliner, but during WWII she was tasked with carrying troops to battle. For this, her exterior was repainted battleship gray, making her impossible to spot in the mist, and earning her the nickname the “Grey Ghost.” After being permanently docked in Long Beach in 1967, she became a hotel and tourist attraction until 2020 where she sat vacant for three years, allowing the spirits of those who have perished onboard to become louder and stronger than ever. As part of the 2023 reopening of the Queen Mary, visit the belly of the ship to see what spirits lurk in the dark damp corridors. Step inside, “The Grey Ghost …” Other attractions include Deadman’s Wharf, Pirate’s Cove, Midway Madness, Shipwreck Graveyard and more. Make your way to the Block Party 30 minutes after the festival opens to experience the Witching Hour. This ghoulish spectacle is not to be missed. Los Angeles Laker’s sports legend Shaquille O’Neal has brought this Halloween Festival to Los Angeles and each night will call upon his minions to rise from their graves, slide into the streets and escape the dark damp corridors of the ship to celebrate Halloween. t seems as though we were just announcing the transformation of Main Street in Old Town Newhall into a one-night Saint Patrick’s Day party, but time flies when you’re having a great time at SENSES Block Party. This event series has become a City-wide favorite not just for my family, but for residents and visitors alike. After all, what’s not to like? An on-street bar providing themed, handcrafted cocktails, live music, food trucks and inflatable games create one incredible evening. It has been a great season for SENSES Block Parties with a variety of fun themes, as well as one more to get everyone in the mood for Halloween. On Thursday, October 19, get ready as classic monsters take over Main Street for the last SENSES of the year: Monster Mash. You’ve seen them all in the movies and read about them in countless stories, but from 7- to 10 p.m., they come alive and roam the streets of Old Town Newhall. From custom, scary mazes that only the most daring will make it through, to themed games and creatively-named cocktails from the on-street bar, this night will conclude this year’s popular event series with a grand finale. As you venture down Main Street, you won’t want to miss the eerie maze that looms over the block. This attraction belongs to arguably the most well-known classic vampire in the books: Dracula. If you dare, wan-

der the twisting corridors of Dracula’s Castle and keep an eye out for bats and cobwebs as you explore this timeless Transylvanian castle-turnedmaze. After you’ve conquered the haunted maze, head over to Frankenstein’s Lab Escape, where only your wits will tell if you can survive the mechanical meltdown. Race against time to escape this electrifying challenge, and who knows, you may even catch a glimpse of Frankenstein’s Monster. Dip, duck and dodge over the inflatable poles to avoid getting knocked over to officially say you’ve escaped this condemned lab. Among the many inflatable games that make SENSES Block Parties so much fun, there will be one in particular that will get everyone in the monster-hunting mood. Head over to the Werewolf Hunt Nerf Crossbow Range, where you’ll be able to face off against the legendary werewolf lurking in the moonlit forest. Arm yourself with a Nerf crossbow and test your marksmanship against this fearsome opponent. This will be one SENSES Block Party you will not want to miss. With Halloween right around the corner, I can’t imagine a better way to get in the spirit. I am extremely proud of the success of each and every SENSES Block Party and I cannot wait to see what is planned for 2024. You can learn more about this incredible event series by visiting SantaClarita. gov/SENSES. about the 1980s, from a man wearing a sexist T-shirt to a vicious gym-class game of dodgeball to a racist school team nickname to a parent who fills her car with cigarette smoke while giving a student a ride to the cops laughing when Jamie hands them a blood sample from the Sweet Sixteen Killer. What are they supposed do with this, plug it into some sort of magical computer device that will help them identify the murderer? What’s with this weirdo kid who claims to be a transfer student from Canada, anyway? The “Back to the Future” vibes kick in when Jamie enrolls at Vernon High School (they just hand her a schedule, no verification process because, hey, the 1980s) and comes face to face with the teenage version of her mother, Pam (now played by Olivia Holt). Jamie secretly works with the teenage edition of her best friend’s mother, Lauren (Troy Leigh-Anne Johnson), a super-smart science kid who believes Jamie’s time-travel story and tries to help her stop the Sweet Sixteen Killer, but she might be making things even worse. Meanwhile, Jamie is also desperate to keep her future mom away from her future dad (Charles Gillespie), because they’re not supposed to get together until years later, and if they hook up now as high school students they’ll probably break up, and where will that leave Jamie? She might be erased from the future timeline, or she’ll be stuck in the 1980s with her parents who won’t become her parents … yeesh. Director Khan employs a crisp and straightforward style that gives “Totally Killer” the look of a not particularly expensive horror film made in the 1980s, and I mean that in a good way. The reveal of the Sweet Sixteen Killer’s identity truly comes as a surprise, and the time-travel complications are resolved in a neat package that actually kinda works, at least as far as these things go. In fact, one could argue that Jamie’s time-travel adventure is easier to digest than Marty McFly’s initial journey through the decades.  Copyright 2022 Chicago Sun-Times

Transform Your Home Into a Haunted House

any transformations occur during the month of October. Leaves begin to turn various shades of orange and red, while the weather gets decidedly cooler. In the meantime, neighborhoods across the country begin to look quite different, with many homes decked out in the garish garb of Halloween. The National Retail Federation together with Prosper Insights & Analytics reports that decorating one’s home for Halloween is the second most popular way to celebrate the holiday. Only purchasing and sharing candy beats out home decor. Individuals spend billions collectively on Halloween each year, and one of the ways they can have some frightening fun is by transforming a regular, unassuming home into a haunted house. There are certain necessities to turn a an otherwise typical home into a suddenly spooky abode. Scene setter Start with a scene setter if you would like to decorate both inside and out. Scene setters are plastic or paper backdrops that can be tacked up on walls to make a house look completely different, particularly under low light. A scene setter is an investment of time and money, but it can be reused each year and really make a

Poke a hole through both sides of the tube and thread some fishing line through. Use your mounting device of choice to attach the fishing line to the ceiling indoors or outside to hang each candle. How You Can Donate Plasma and Save a Life

M

illions of people around the world rely on plasma to treat a range of conditions, including rare inherited diseases, severe burns and trauma, liver disorders and for cancer supportive care. “Plasma-derived medicines are often the only therapies available for patients with many rare, chronic and potentially debilitating and life-threatening diseases,” says Anita Brikman, president and chief executive officer of the Plasma Protein Therapeutics Association. “In short, donating plasma helps save lives.” To encourage individuals to learn more and to donate plasma, if they are eligible, the Plasma Protein Therapeutics Association is sharing patient insights, along with answers to some frequently asked questions about the uses of plasma in healthcare and why we need more of it: What is plasma and why is it so useful in treating such a broad range of health conditions? Five Signs You Need to Hire a Landscape Pro

I

n this age of DIY, many outdoor home projects look doable. The truth is, plenty of outdoor projects tackled by homeowners to save money are better left to landscape professionals. When attempting these projects on their own, homeowners soon realize that some jobs require more knowledge and expertise than an online search engine can provide, and the project may end up costing more if doing it themselves. Fortunately, trained, experienced and certified experts are available to help turn your vision into an enjoyable reality and bring years of knowledge and value to your outdoor project. Experts found through the National Association of Landscape Professionals, which represents an industry of nearly one million landscape, lawn care, irrigation and tree care professionals, have the expertise to create and maintain healthy green spaces that benefit our communities and environment. How do you know if you need a professional? Here are five signs.

Your lawn looks unhealthy

You see brown grass, patchy growth and weeds. You’ve tried everything from various lawn products to altered watering techniques, but nothing works. Lawn care professionals have the expertise and education to get to the root of your yard problems. A trained lawn-care professional can evaluate factors including the pH balance of your soil, the presence of non-native grasses or problems created by overor under-fertilizing your lawn. These experts may have your soil analyzed and work alongside an agronomist to determine the best fertilizer application for your specific type of grass, and create a maintenance plan to achieve optimal lawn health.

You want a patio

You’ve dreamed of entertaining outdoors, viewing online pictures of patios, and think, “How hard can it be?” Hardscaping — installing elements of landscape architecture, from pathways to retaining walls — requires a skilled hand, careful consideration of

GARDENING

of colors and variety. They also know how to use plantings to camouflage unsightly areas of your landscape and add focal points to locations you wish to feature. When working with a landscape professional, they’ll help you consider layering plant sizes and textures to create a beautiful outdoor space.

You have big plans

the best materials, plus knowledge of placement and installation. A landscape professional will know what materials work best for your region and landscape design, and can assess your yard to consider issues that could impact your new feature. With a complex project, a landscape architect or designer can further assist you on planning your vision.

Your tree looks sick

If a tree in your yard has dead branches, bark splitting, fungus, defoliation or has had improper pruning, it’s time to call an arborist. Consulting an arborist will help determine issues with your trees and the best course of action. Better yet, use an arborist to prevent problems with your healthy trees down the road. Arborists are trained and certified to ensure proper pruning and maintenance. They can recommend the best trees for your yard, where to plant them and how to get them off to a healthy start.

You want a new landscape

You love seeing colorful flowers and lush greenery at the local garden store, but don’t know where to start. What will work best with your existing trees and plants? Where should you plant? What will grow best with your climate and soil type? You may be tempted to choose shrubs based only on their appearance, but improper choices could greatly impact your landscape

design. A landscape professional is trained in proper plant selection and understands what flowers and greenery grow best in specific soil conditions, plus how to achieve a balance

You’ve invested time and energy into your yard, and you want to protect that investment. Perhaps you want an irrigation system or landscape lighting, water feature or another upgrade. A landscape professional can help bring your vision to life. They can assess the cost, timing and aesthetic considerations, and how it will impact your existing design. Within the lawn and landscape industry, there are experts for any size project and need. To find a local professional to advise you on your outdoor space, visit loveyourlandscape.org/find-a-pro/. Reverse Mortgages

A

s long as there have been homes for sale, there have been financial vehicles designed to alleviate some of the financial pressures associated with owning a home. A reverse mortgage is another way homeowners can borrow money based on the value of their homes, but it doesn’t need to be repaid as long as those individuals are still living in their residences.

Eligibility and Basics

The Federal Trade Commission’s Consumer Advice says a reverse mortgage is an option for those age 62 or older who can borrow money based on their equity, or how much money one could get for the home if sold after what is owed on the mortgage is paid off. At least one owner must live in the house most of the year. Reverse mortgages may be paid as a cash lump sum, as a monthly income or as a line of credit that enables the homeowner to decide how much is desired and when.

Determining Eligibility

There is a misconception that a loan that requires no monthly repayment of principal or interest will not come with any eligibility considerations. Premier Reverse Mortgage says there are some things to know before doing reverse mortgages. To prevent homeowners using reverse mortgages to avoid downsizing due to financial shortcomings, certain eligibility parameters must be met, including a credit history analysis, income requirements, age requirement, and property stipulations. These criteria may differ from lender to lender.

Traditional vs. Reverse Mortgages

Unlike a traditional mortgage where payments are made to principal and interest and the balance goes down over time, with a reverse mortgage, borrowers do not make any payments right away. The loan balance goes up over time and the loan is repaid when the borrower no longer lives in the home. The homeowners or their heirs will eventually have to pay back the loan, usually by selling the home. However, as the loan balance increases, the home equity decreases with a reverse mortgage. This can affect a surviving spouse or other family members. The FTC advises homeowners to confirm the reverse mortgage has a “non-recourse” clause, which means that the borrower or the borrower’s estate cannot owe more than the value of the home when the loan becomes due and the home is sold.

Additional Considerations

Due to fees and other requirements, a reverse mortgage may be a more expensive way to borrow money. Other ways to borrow against equity may be a better fit, such as a home equity line of credit. Furthermore, since reverse mortgages are for older adults, scams are prevalent. Some include contractors who approach seniors about getting a reverse mortgage to pay for repairs, or scams targeting veterans. Borrowers considering reverse mortgages should first speak with a qualified financial planner. Homeowners in the United States can access information through the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. All options, costs and interest rate information should be confirmed before signing on the dotted line. (MC) 

Which is right for you? EVs vs. Gas-Powered Vehicles

T

he market for battery-electric vehicles (EVs) has quickly grown over the last several years as more consumers look to take advantage of the overall cost savings that EV ownership promises, including skirting the gas pump for a plug that can lead to lower fuel costs and fewer parts that require regular maintenance. While EVs may offer lower expenses over time, those looking to purchase a new vehicle should carefully consider the initial costs, their impact on insurance premiums compared to Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) vehicles, and other factors that can affect the “total cost of ownership.” “Along with the Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price of a vehicle, buyers need to think about additional costs of owning and maintaining a particular vehicle over time,’” said Kevin Quinn, Vice President of Auto Claims at Mercury Insurance. “The ‘total cost of ownership’ equation includes insurance premiums, fuel efficiency, repair expenses, the need for home charging infrastructure if purchasing an EV, along with other relevant factors.” If you’re in the market for a new car, it’s highly recommended to assess all aspects of the type of vehicle you’re looking to purchase. A comprehensive understanding of the total cost can help minimize unexpected costs during your vehicle’s lifetime. Fueling costs The promise of no longer having to pay for gas is one of the main reasons people purchase an EV. With fueling up as simple as plugging in your smartphone, it’s no wonder more people are considering

repair and maintenance costs than gas-powered vehicles.

purchasing an electric vehicle. First Entertainment Credit Union based in Los Angeles has seen a 233% increase in EV loans since 2019. While plugging in a vehicle for a charge can be cheaper than buying gasoline, the cost of operating an EV can also result in significant savings over the life of the vehicle. The rise of public charging infrastructure is making the cost of owning an EV more accessible; however, public charging can be scarce or non-existent depending on your location and your commute. EV owners who are also homeowners can opt to install their own chargers, but they can be expensive when you include installa-

tion costs. “Drivers will need to be cognizant to the cost of gas or access to charging stations in their area when making a decision about which type of vehicle to purchase,” said Quinn. Maintenance When it comes to maintenance for an ICE vehicle, there are several upkeep items that can add to the cost of ownership over time. ICE vehicles depend on a large number of moving parts, which can demand more servicing. With no internal combustion engine, no pistons, valves or moving parts that need oil, EVs don’t need many of the routine services required by their ICE counterparts. This can result in lower

Insurance While EVs may offer a number of advantages in terms of reduced maintenance and fueling costs, insurance might offset these potential savings. EVs are typically more expensive to purchase and often come loaded with more complex technology than their gas-powered cousins. So, the cost of repairing or replacing them after an accident may be higher. As a result, comprehensive and collision coverage for EVs can cost more than coverage for regular cars. It’s important to note that insurance companies also factor in an owner’s driving history and location when setting premiums. However, as more people adopt EVs and insurance companies gather more data in the future, their insurance cost may potentially even out. “When it comes to their next vehicle purchase, it’s imperative for car owners to take a comprehensive view of all the facets involved,” said Quinn. “Knowing the difference in ownership costs between EVs and gas-powered cars before purchase can help you avoid any unpleasant surprises and ensure that you are happy with your choice. It’s important to weigh the pros and cons of each type of vehicle and find out the right information to make an informed decision.” (BPT) 

The Best-Selling EVs on the Road Today

ith more options to choose from, prospective EV buyers may wonder which EV models are currently the most popular. According to Kiplinger, the following were the 10 best-selling EV models in the U.S. in 2022. 1. Tesla Model Y 2. Tesla Model 3 3. Tesla Model S 4. Kia EV6 5. Tesla Model X 6. Ford Mustang Mach-E 7. The cost of EVs varies widely, so prospective drivers may want to do a little homework prior to beginning the process of purchasing an electric vehicle. Government incentives may help to mitigate EV costs, but prospective buyers can still benefit by determining their budget and then identifying which EVs they can afford. Ancillary costs, which may include a home charging station installation, also should be factored in when determining the overall cost of switching from gas-powered vehicles to EVs. Potential cost savings of EVs, including the savings related to no longer needing to pay for fuel, are some additional variables that prospective buyers must consider. EVs are more visible than ever, and prospective buyers have many options to consider as they look into switching from gas-powered to electric vehicles. (MC) 

Fans of “All My Children” enthusiastically greeted stars like Kelly Ripa (Hayley) and Susan Lucci (Erica), while “One Life to Live” devotees cheered on David Fumero (Christian) and Kamar de los Reyes (Antonio). “General Hospital” remains the lone ABC soap that still exists to this day and hosts its own fan gatherings, but none that are Mickey Mouse adjacent.

Instead, for the past four years, “General Hospital” has had its biggest fan gatherings at none other than Elvis Presley’s Graceland estate. This year’s three-day event will be held at various locations within the Graceland campus from Oct. 27-29. In addition to six panels and photo/ autograph opportunities with “GH”

Does Chrishell Stause act anymore, or does she just sell real estate on the reality show “Selling Sunset”? — L.H.

Despite achieving the most fame as a reality TV star in Netflix’s “Selling Sunset,” and for her very public divorce with “This Is Us” star Justin Hartley, Stause is still doing what she first set out to do in Hollywood — act in scripted dramas. In fact, she can be seen starring in an upcoming Lifetime thriller “You’re Not Supposed to Be Here” on Nov. 4.

She and Diora Baird (“Cobra Kai”) play a vacationing couple who are expecting their first child together. Their planned peaceful getaway turns into a nightmare when the townspeople appear to be hostile.

Honey Drop Dead By Laura Childs

Theodosia’s Honey Bee Tea is an elegant affair set in Charleston’s Petigru Park amidst native grasses and a beekeeping project. But when a phony beekeeper sprays toxic smoke at the guests, the party erupts in chaos. Then a shot rings out and politician Osgood Claxton III falls to the ground — dead. Holly Burns, the gallery owner who commissioned the tea, is in shock. A man is dead, guests injured, her paintings left in tatters. When the po-

lice don’t have a clue, when old-line politicos don’t want questions asked, Holly begs Theodosia to run a shadow investigation and help restore her gallery’s good name. This is book #26 in the Tea Shop Mystery series — a series that was pronounced “one of the absolute best cozy mystery series” by Book Riot and recently featured as a question on Jeopardy! BOOKREVIEW

Eugene Kranz was the face of NASA leadership. Now he documents the leadership and teamwork principles that emerged from an organization of novice, part-time engineers in NASA Mercury Control. By July 1969, when faced with the stress of the Apollo 11 mission to land Americans on the moon, they had matured into a group of hardened individuals empowered to make the split-second decisions to land with only 17seconds of fuel remaining. What had changed? Team chemistry, says Kranz. IT! elevates performance to where the impossible becomes commonplace. IT! was born in a bare-bones warehouse floor work environment, where learning by doing developed the materials for flight. Moving innovation forward, as you’ll see, is never simple. Condoleezza Checks Boxes To be a political appointee these days one must check off a certain number of boxes. Being the best person for the job is not important. Gov. Gavin Newsom’s appointee to fill the remaining 15 months of Dianne Feinstein’s term as senator is Laphonza Butler. In my view she checks off one box … she supports abortion rights. She doesn’t live in California, but she’ll come out West, no problem. I’ve got to think, in his haste to fill Feinstein’s seat, Newsom left out an obvious candidate, one whose credentials are long and impressive, Condoleezza Rice. Her box checks are almost too long to list: Current director of the Hoover Institute at Stanford University, check. Former secretary of state, check. Former national security advisor, check. Graduated college Phi Beta Kappa at age 19, check. Could have been a concert pianist, check. Part owner of Denver Broncos, check. One of only a handful of women to be members at Augusta National, check. She lives in Washington, D.C., but might be willing to live in California. Gavin, did you even ask her? Maybe she doesn’t check off enough boxes. She could, however, probably get you tickets for the Master’s. Larry Moore Valencia

Joining Forces? I suggest that Marsha McLean and Lois Eisenberg spend some time together sorting out how to deal with a supermajority. They each suffer in their own ways from frustration at their incapability to move the crowd in their direction. One wants the crowd to move right. The other, for the crowd to move left. These two comprise more than 100 years of experience between them. Perhaps they could exchange their grievances, share their successful strategies, and with luck they might extract a common solution from their reflections upon their grief. Enough with the Ad Hominem By David Hegg

D

oes anyone else think our entire society needs to go back to high school and re-learn to debate? I can remember learning the rules, regulations, and ethics of argumentation and rebuttal in my high school debate class under the tutelage of Mr. Bart Hagen. And, we had to demonstrate both the appropriate actions and the thinking behind them in real, adjudicated debates that dealt with the social issues of the day. Over the past few years I have watched our society break almost every debating rule in situations where differing views collide. But, by far the greatest casualty is the rule against argumentum ad hominem, Latin for “argument against the person,” and if we take the Latin ad in another of its accepted meanings, we have “argument to the person.” In either case, the argumentum ad hominem is almost universally fallacious in that it attacks the person rather than the person’s argument. Today, we see ad hominem arguments being accepted as a sort of coup de grâce – a death blow – which decisively ends the argument in favor of the one slinging it. For example, “You’re completely wrong in your thinking because you grew up in a two-parent household and went to private school.” Or, “A woman shouldn’t do a man’s job.” Or even, “A man who has never worked with his hands shouldn’t run for public office.” All of these attack the person rather than the issue at hand. Frankly, while one’s family situation and education do have an effect on a person, it cannot be proven that all who experience these benefits think alike. And if the issue is intellect, perseverance, and/or ability to do a job, a person’s sex has no relevance. Lastly, there is no proof that working with one’s hands dictates how a person thinks or what level of character, integrity, ability, or wisdom they possess. But the ad hominem argument has grown legs that have taken it into much more important areas, and today it has been granted an almost unassailable status. “You can’t possibly understand the danger since you’re a Republican!” or, “You Democrats are the greatest threat to our democracy.” Or, “You Christians are haters, bigots, and a blight on society.” All of these are fallacious simply because it cannot be proven that every Republican, Democrat, or Christ-follower has the same beliefs, and possesses or lacks the same character traits and integrity, especially if there are substantial arguments and evidence put forward to the contrary. What we’re seeing today is a complete reversal in dealing with opposing opinions and beliefs. It once was understood that determining a person’s character

by their skin color, economic position, age, or a number of other variables was heinous. But today, in too many places that matter, it is acceptable to throw a bomb into a substantive discussion by saying, “Of course you think that way because you are ______ (insert skin color, economic status, political alignment, age, religious standing, etc., here).” And why have we as a society walked intentionally into accepting ad hominem as a viable argument? The answer is also quite an indictment on us all. Attacking the person or the party or the group is so much easier than actually dissecting and overwhelming their arguments with incisive logic and irrefutable, legitimate evidence. What we learned in debate class is that those who stoop to ad hominem not only hijack the discussion and take it off topic by instigating a personal attack, but they do so because they can no longer legitimately defend their position. They have run out of real arguments and their only hope is to change the subject by making it personal. And, we also learned that when that happens, a good, educated debater will realize how defenseless the opponent really is, and will call out the fallacy of ad hominem and claim victory. So, what do we do? First, we stop and examine our own hearts. It is so easy to fall into an ad hominem mindset today. Second, understand that remaining in your own private echo chamber in which you only hear what you want to hear, and already agree with, will only deepen your belief that you and your friends are both good and right while those who disagree are not only wrong but also bad, evil people who are just plain wrong and should be canceled. Let me speak plainly even though I should be more guarded. I’m a Christ-follower. I know what I believe and always attempt to live a life that makes what I believe appealing. I strive to be winsome, ready to listen, and always open to real discussion, even debate, with anyone. I also am pretty knowledgeable about opposing worldviews, and can hold my own in a debate. But, my preference is to pursue relationship, not merely get into arguments. And why is that? Simply because we’re all more than just our opinions, our views, our beliefs. We’re fellow travelers on the road of life, and we can either get to know one another or stand at a distance and throw rocks. You, the good people of Santa Clarita Valley, are my people, regardless of how much we may sometimes differ. Let’s figure out how to collaborate as we navigate the future together. And no more ad hominem. Local resident David Hegg is senior pastor of Grace Baptist Church. “Ethically Speaking” appears Sundays. 
