Fall Gardening: The Time to Reseed and Fertilize

fter the extremes of summer weather in the Santa Clarita Valley have receded it will be time for fall gardening season.

“The extreme heat of summer is challenging for all aspects of gardening, however lawns seem to struggle with the intense heat,” said Fall might be a good time to reseed and fertilize the lawn,” said John Windsor, Green Thumb Nursery horticultural consultant.

Lawns need a consistent supply of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium to help develop and stay healthy. Depending on your soil type, which tends to lean heavily on clay in the Santa Clarita Valley, there are suitable fertilizers in granular or liquid forms which can improve conditions.

Aerating your garden or lawn is an important step as it breaks up tight, hard soil. This lets air, water and food reach the plant roots.

An easy test to check if your lawn needs aerating is to take a screwdriver and try to push it into the ground about 3 to 4 inches deep, the depth which most grass roots grow. If it’s easy to do, your lawn is probably okay. But if you have to work to sink the screwdriver into the lawn, it’s probably time to aerate There are numerous tools you can purchase for this important job, however experts recommend

Fall Veggies

“Fall is a great time to plant leafy greens and other cool weather veggies” said Windsor. “After you have harvested your spring crops, add more compost and fertilizer to the soil so that you can plant fall veggies.”

Windsor offered this short list of vegetables that grow well in the Santa Clarita Valley during the cool months: • Root crops including beets, onions, turnips and carrots.

• Leafy greens including spinach, kale and various lettuces.

• Cole crops including cauliflower, broccoli and Brussels Sprouts.

• Legumes including various kinds of peas.

Hot New Trend

One of the hottest new trends in gardening is the planting of saffron corms to grow your own saffron. The most expensive spice on earth, a pound of

locally-grown, high-end saffron can net anywhere from $5,000 to $10,000.

Many home cooks now forgo saffron dishes because the spice has soared out of the reach of many budgets.

Southern California’s Mediterranean climate, characterized by hot, dry summers and mild winters, mirrors the native growing conditions of top saffron-producing countries.

In Southern California, including the SCV, plant saffron crocus (Crocus sativus) corms in September or October. This timing allows the bulbs to wake up from summer dormancy and establish roots before the cooler fall weather triggers their signature blooms in October through December.

Saffron is surprisingly easy to grow and does not need much space. It grows well in pots and in small planter boxes, too.

The plants, once established will multiply each year and require little to no attention. They also add color to your fall garden.

Planting tips to successfully grow saffron: Sunlight Pick a spot with full sun.

Soil Use very loose, fast-draining soil. Saffron corms rot easily in wet or heavy clay dirt. SCV soil can be clay heavy, so be sure to add soil amendments for a less dense soil.

Watering Water lightly right after planting. Keep soil only slightly moist until green shoots appear.

Protection Guard your corms with wire mesh or plant them in containers. Gophers and squirrels love to dig them up.  S U N D AY S I G N A L · 5

When Do Travelers Trust a Travel Advisor Instead of AI?

T

ravelers are more likely to trust a travel advisor over AI when the trip becomes complicated, expensive or likely to change. According to new research from ALG Vacations, a leading vacation package provider, 77% of AI users say they are likely to still rely on a human to make final travel decisions when using AI to plan.

The pattern is strongest among younger travelers. Millennials and Gen Z are using travel advisors at the highest rates of any generation, even as they also report higher trust in AI travel recommendations. Younger travelers are using AI and travel advisors for different parts of the same trip.

Are Millennials and Gen Z still using travel advisors?

Yes. Younger travelers are using both AI and travel advisors. In fact, among AI users, the youngest generations use travel advisors most: • 51% of Millennials have used a travel advisor when booking a vacation • 51% of Gen Z say the same • 44% of Baby Boomers report advisor use • 43% of Gen X report advisor use The same generations leading on advisor use are also the most trusting of AI travel recommendations. Among AI users, 31% of both Millennials and Gen Z say they completely trust travel recommendations generated by AI, compared with 12% of Baby Boomers. They are using both.

When should you use a travel advisor instead of AI?

Consider using a travel advisor over AI when the stakes are high. AI users turn to travel advisors most often in these scenarios: • 36% when something goes wrong, such as a canceled flight or a double-booked hotel • 31% for complex or multi-destination trips • 27% for group or family travel • 27% for luxury or high-cost trips When forced to choose between AI and a travel advisor for final vacation decisions, 44% of AI users pick a travel advisor and 37% pick AI. Among

Baby Boomers, the gap widens sharply, with 59% picking a travel advisor and 15% picking AI.

What does a travel advisor bring that AI cannot?

Travel advisors bring human judgment, planning experience and direct support when a trip becomes more complicated. Among AI users, 82% say having access to a human for support when booking a vacation is extremely or very important.

That support matters when travelers are comparing options, booking a higher-cost trip, coordinating multiple people or adjusting plans after a disruption. AI can organize information quickly, but travelers still cite practical concerns about relying on it entirely.

The specific value travel advisors provide includes: • Relationships with the people who run resorts, hotels and tour operators • Access to deals and amenities not always available to the public • Firsthand experience and industry knowledge

• Real-time support when plans change • Judgment and personalization for complex trip planning The top concerns AI users have about relying entirely on AI include important details being missed (42%), privacy or security concerns (42%) and having no support if something goes wrong (39%).

Is AI going to replace travel advisors?

No. The data shows AI and travel advisors, still commonly known as travel agents, serving complementary roles rather than competing ones.

AI is used for the research and inspiration stages of travel planning. Travel advisors are used for the booking, more complex decisions and moments when travelers want a person involved.

AI is now part of how people plan trips. Travel advisors are too. The travelers most comfortable using AI are also the ones turning to advisors most often.

Blankets of Love Provides Emergency Animal Relief

hen Eileen Smulson walked into the newly built West Valley Animal Shelter in Chatsworth on a rainy day in January 2008, she had no idea the visit would change the course of her life.

What she saw that morning — puppies “freezing in a wind tunnel with no blankets or towels” — became the defining moment that inspired her to create Operation Blankets of Love (OBOL), now a nationally recognized animal-welfare emergency relief nonprofit based in Granada Hills.

“I couldn’t picture my rescue, Ginger, in that situation,” she recalled.

When shelter staff told her there was no budget for blankets or towels and that they relied entirely on community donations, Smulson immediately began asking how she could help. Within 24 hours, she was on the phone with the head of all six Los Angeles city shelters. By the end of the week, she had set up three drop-off locations in Granada Hills and created a flyer — “I wasn’t techie back then,” she said — to encourage donations of new and gently used blankets and towels.

Within a month, she collected 300 items. Soon after, shelters across the city and county began asking for help.

“I said to my husband, this must be my calling,” she said. “I’m going to start a nonprofit because I can’t just use all my funds to help all the animals. I need the community to chip in.”

Today, OBOL has grown far beyond its humble beginnings. Smulson and her husband, Brad, now support more than 50 rescue organizations every month — “not a year, a month,” she A U G U S T 30, 2026

emphasized — providing thousands of dollars’ worth of essential supplies at no cost. “We rescue the rescuers,” she said, repeating OBOL’s tagline.

“We’re like the Red Cross to the animal rescue world.”

A Mission Rooted in Compassion

OBOL’s mission is “dedicated to safeguarding the wellbeing of homeless animals by providing essential supplies and support to shelter and rescue organizations, farm and wildlife sanctuaries; ensuring these animals have the best chance for survival and adoption.”

The organization donates everything from blankets, towels, pet beds, leashes, collars, harnesses, toys, crates, carriers, cat litter, flea medication, grooming supplies, and even pet wheelchairs. These items support dogs, cats, pregnant mothers, newborns, seniors, and special-needs animals. For many shelters — especially rural ones — OBOL is the only

source of these supplies. “Not one of them has a budget for pet items,” Smulson said. “So they all come to us.”

Over the years, OBOL has assisted more than 1,300 rescue groups, 125 shelters, and over 120 organizations that help homeless individuals with pets. The impact, Smulson said, is measured in thousands of animals helped every month.

A Strong Presence in Santa Clarita

Santa Clarita has become one of OBOL’s most active communities.

During local wildfires, OBOL has been on the ground at evacuation centers — including College of the Canyons — “before the Red Cross,” providing crates, food, bowls, toys, leashes, and collars to evacuees with pets.

The city is also home to OBOL’s top performing donation site: Pet

Supplies Plus. “I’m there two to three times a week because we have a basket there and people keep bringing stuff for the homeless animals,” Smulson said. “It is so amazing.”

She has also worked with local Girl Scout troops, helping them earn pet badges and complete service projects, though she hopes to rebuild those connections. “I need more contacts to get into youth groups,” she said.

“People have contacts to churches or youth groups or teachers. If they really want to help more animals get loving homes, that would be terrific.”

Humane Education: Reaching the Next Generation

One of OBOL’s most significant programs is its humane education initiative, which Smulson has delivered to more than 14,000 children — from preschool through high school.

Santa Clarita Voices Podcast: Conversations that Connect our Community

ne of the most rewarding parts of my job as City Manager is the opportunity to meet people who dedicate their time, talent and passion to making Santa Clarita an extraordinary place to live, work and play. While many of those conversations happen in meetings or out in the community, over the last year and a half I’ve also had the privilege of sharing many of them through our official podcast, Santa Clarita Voices. When we launched the podcast in December 2024, our goal was to create a space for meaningful conversations about the people, projects and topics that shape our community. Rather than quick interviews, we wanted to take a deeper dive into the stories behind City services, hear directly from experts and community leaders and give residents an inside look at what makes Santa Clarita such a special place.

Since our inaugural episode with then-Mayor Cameron Smyth, I’ve had the opportunity to sit down with an incredible group of guests. We’ve explored the City’s award-winning parks system, our recreation programs, as well as careers in public service. We’ve also highlighted the professionals who help keep our community safe. Assistant Fire Chief Pat Sprengel shared valuable wildfire preparedness tips and an inside look at aerial firefighting, while Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff ’s Station Captain Brandon Barclay joined me to discuss public safety, e-bike enforcement and the people be-

hind local law enforcement.

Other conversations showcased the unique people and places that make Santa Clarita one of a kind. We caught up with Xanthe Pajarillo, better known as the “McRib Girl,” explored the future of mountain biking with professional rider Spencer Rathkamp and visited the William S. Hart Park Barnyard to meet the animals that welcome visitors throughout the year. One of my favorite episodes was also one of our most interactive. I answered questions submitted by residents through social media. From housing and development to a few lighthearted “Mean Tweets,” it was an opportunity to answer many of the questions we hear most often.

Whether you’re interested in learning more about City projects, the people who serve our community or simply hearing engaging conversations, I invite you to tune in. For now, let’s start with a bruschetta appetizer, then enjoy Hawaiian chicken and finish with a patriotic dessert.

Strawberry Balsamic Bruschetta Ingredients

1 baguette, cut into 1” slices 1/4 cup plus 2 tsp. extra-virgin olive oil, divided 2 cups ricotta 2 tsp. kosher salt 1 tsp. Freshly ground black pepper 2 cups strawberries, chopped 2 Tbsp. fresh basil, thinly sliced Balsamic glaze, for serving

Preheat oven to 400°.

Place baguette slices on a medium sheet tray and drizzle or brush with 1/4 cup olive oil. Bake until bread is toasted, about 10 minutes.

In a medium bowl, mix ricotta with salt, pepper and 2 teaspoons oil. Spread each toast generously with ricotta mixture then top with strawberries.

Garnish with basil and drizzle with balsamic glaze. Serve.

Hawaiian Chicken Foil Packs 1 cup classic BBQ sauce 1/4 cup reduced-sodium soy sauce 1/4 cup extra-virgin olive oil

cup chopped cilantro, divided cup sliced scallions, divided Tbsp. lemon juice Tbsp. smoked paprika Tbsp. grated fresh ginger, from a 1” piece clove garlic, minced Kosher salt Tbsp. freshly ground black pepper, divided red bell pepper, stem and seeds removed, sliced 1” thick red onion, halved and sliced 1” thick cups cubed fresh pineapple boneless, skinless chicken breasts (2 to 3 pounds total)

Heat grill to medium-high for at least 3 minutes. In a small bowl, stir together BBQ sauce, soy sauce, oil, 2 tablespoons each cilantro and scallions, lemon juice, paprika, ginger, garlic, and 1 teaspoon each salt and pepper.

Divide the bell pepper, onion, and pineapple between four 16” square sheets of heavy duty aluminum foil. Top each packet with a chicken breast and season with 2 teaspoons each salt and pepper, di-

viding evenly. Pour the sauce over top, dividing evenly, then tightly fold each piece of foil to make a packet and place on the grill.

Grill, covered and undisturbed, for 20 minutes, then use tongs to carefully open the top of each packet. Grill for another 5 minutes, until an instant-read thermometer inserted into the thickest part of the breast reads 165°.

Remove from the grill and let rest for 5 minutes. Transfer contents of each package to a plate and spoon any remaining sauce over top. Garnish with remaining 2 tablespoons each cilantro and scallion, dividing evenly.

Star-Spangled Strawberries

1 cup white chocolate chips 1 1/4 tsp. refined coconut oil, divided 1/4 cup dark blue candy melts 16 oz. ripe strawberries, room temperature, patted dry Assorted red, white, and blue sprinkles, for decorating

In a medium microwave-safe bowl, microwave chips and 1 tsp. oil in 30-second increments, stirring between each, until melted and smooth, about 90 seconds total.

In a small microwave-safe bowl, microwave blue candy and remaining 1/4 tsp. oil in 30-second increments, stirring between each, until melted and smooth, about 1 minute total.

Transfer melted blue candy to a small zip-top bag. Cut a very small opening in one of the corners.

One at a time, hold each strawberry by its leaves and dip into white chocolate, leaving about a 1/4” of red top showing.

Drizzle blue candy onto white chocolate in lines. Immediately sprinkle with red, white, and blue sprinkles. Arrange on a parchment-lined baking sheet.

eather can be unpredictable, even during the warmest months of the year. Summer days may feature strong thunderstorms and downpours, followed by stretches of extremely hot and dry conditions. Weather extremes can take a toll on lawns, especially when drought is part of the equation. The results can be anything from dry patches to a scorched landscape, leaving homeowners wondering what they can do to repair the damage.

According to The Spruce, dry grass can happen in as little as a week without adequate care and water.

Sometimes dry grass can be the result of disease, pets, or pests. A healthy lawn will be lush and green; a dry lawn quite the opposite. It’s crunchy, uncomfortable and muted in color. Here’s how to address a dry lawn to restore it to it’s natural beauty.

Lawn Height

Sometimes a lawn mower might be to blame for a brown lawn. According to ScottsTM, the higher a

person mows, the deeper the lawn’s roots will grow.

That can help the lawn thrive under restricted water conditions and insulate the lawn from some of the effects of hot, dry weather. Never remove more than one-third of the total height in a single mowing, as that can stress the lawn.

Diseases

Leaf blight, brown patches and powdery mildew are just some of the diseases that can affect a lawn.

Fungal bacteria can spread on a lawn and contribute to these conditions, which makes it important to aerate and dethatch the lawn in cooler seasons to help prevent disease.

Improper pH

Her presentations are fully interactive — no PowerPoints — and include the story of her own rescue dog, who performs tricks to show children that abused animals can learn to trust and love again.

Each child receives a free bilingual coloring and activity book she wrote, teaching responsible pet care, empathy, compassion, anti-bullying, and teamwork.

Students also host collection drives for OBOL, becoming “part of the solution” by gathering blankets and other comfort items for shelter animals.

“We empower children to become the caring custodians of our animal friends,” she said.

Disaster Relief and International Reach OBOL is also an emergency response team, providing supplies during fires, floods, earthquakes, and other disasters. “During the COVID pandemic

we never shut down,” Smulson said.

The organization’s reach extends internationally, supporting volunteers traveling to Puerto Rico, Cuba, Guatemala, Vietnam, Cambodia, and even rescuers saving dogs from the meat trade in China.

OBOL also assists farm and wildlife sanctuaries, providing blankets, pet beds, hay, and other supplies for pigs, goats, donkeys, raccoons, squirrels, reptiles, and more. “It is so amazing,” she said.

“These are the animals that will never be able to get a home, but they’re going to live out their life on a farm.”

Community Partnerships Through Pageantry

For more than a decade, Tara Rice — Miss West Coast Pageant Director and Co-National United States Pageant Director — has incorporated OBOL into her pageant programs. Every contestant must choose a platform or cause, and Rice teaches participants how to partner with nonprofits like OBOL. “Operation Blankets of Love fills a critical gap

that many people don’t realize exists,” Rice said.

“Shelters often don’t have the budget for essential comfort and care items. OBOL provides lifesaving supplies that help animals survive, heal, and find loving homes.”

Rice also emphasizes OBOL’s disaster-relief work and its advocacy for adopting from shelters rather than buying from breeders or pet stores.

A Call to Action

For Smulson, the mission remains deeply personal. “If people really want to help more animals get loving homes, we can save more lives,” she said.

“And what a great feeling that would be.”

he importance of saving for retirement cannot be overstated. Expenses related to housing, transportation, medical care, and even recreational pursuits remain even after retirees are no longer earning a paycheck, and that underscores the need to build a sizable nest egg.

Running out of money in retirement is a legitimate fear for many retirees, including those who did what they could to save for their golden years.

According to MetLife’s 2026 Paycheck or Pot of Gold Study, 51% of retirees who invested in an employer’s defined contribution (DC) plan worry about running out of money in retirement. And such fears are growing, as MetLife notes just 30% of retirees expressed similar fears in 2017. Travel during off-peak seasons According to a recent poll from RBC Wealth Management, 63% of respondents see travel as an important retirement goal. But more than half of those people feel the cost of travel could jeopardize those plans. But retirees can save on travel by choosing to vacation during off-peak times of

year. Travel tends to peak at times of year when school is out, such as winter break, spring break and summer vacation. The costs of flights, lodging and rental cars tend to be particularly high during these in-demand seasons.

Retirees have more freedom to travel whenever they choose, and they can use that to their financial advantage by avoiding peak travel seasons and saving on flights, hotels and other expenditures.

Take advantage of senior discounts A wide range of businesses and services offer discounts to senior consumers. With students in school and traffic patterns changing, consider these tips so students arrive to and from class safely:

Drivers

Because children outside of vehicles do not have the same protections as drivers and passengers, drivers have an out-sized role to protect people walking, biking and rolling.

• Take your time and be patient.

• Always follow the speed limit.

• Use extra caution at crosswalks and intersections, especially if you notice children nearby.

• Don’t drive distracted — even a quick glance at your phone can have tragic consequences.

• Never drive while impaired.

• Adjust your driving to the conditions and use extra caution in rain, fog and darkness.

• If you see a bicyclist ahead, wait until it’s safe to pass and give them at least 3 feet of space when you do.

• Equip your bicycle with lights and reflectors to be more visible to drivers and pedestrians.

• Wear a properly fitted helmet and bright clothing.

Pedestrians

Pedestrians have an important role in their own safety, particularly in school zones and crosswalks where children and other people may be present.

• Use sidewalks when available. If there are no sidewalks, walk facing traffic so you can see drivers and they can see you.

• Avoid crossing outside of crosswalks. If there is a signalized crosswalk or marked crosswalk, use it.

There’s Precedent In her June 2 letter, Lois Eisenberg bashed President Donald Trump for demolishing part of the White House to make way for a ballroom. She says his “obsession with his exaggerated, gaudy, pretentious ballroom is excessive beyond belief.” Well, no it’s not. All you need do is look at it and there’s no need to “believe.”

But Trump isn’t the only president to undertake such “renovations” to the White House. For example: Theodore Roosevelt (1902): Modernized the building and built the original West Wing to separate his growing family’s living quarters from executive offices.

William Howard Taft (1909): Expanded the West Wing and created the Oval Office.

Calvin Coolidge (1927): Rebuilt the roof and added a third floor.

Franklin D. Roosevelt (1934-1942): Expanded the West Wing and relocated the Oval Office. He also built the East Wing to conceal an underground bunker.

Harry S. Truman (1948-1952): Gutted the interior, reinforcing it with steel beams and a deep concrete foundation.

Richard Nixon (1970-1973): Converted the indoor pool into a press briefing room and added the basement bowling alley.

Gerald Ford (1975): Constructed an outdoor swimming pool.

Wow. Swimming pools and bowling alleys. Many presidents and first ladies have updated and renovated the White House.

While many changes are purely decorative, past leaders have rebuilt, expanded and structurally altered the iconic property. So what’s the problem with a ballroom?

What We Expect ...

rom the top, I’m going to rephrase what this column hopes to get across. Let’s consider “what we have the right to expect from our elected officials.”

Broadly speaking, we all have certain expectations for doctors, law enforcement officers, teachers, pastors, moms, dads, waiters, waitresses, and certainly many others if we had the time and space to list them. My point is, given our government was founded to be “of the people, by the people, and for the people,” I’m going to prime the pump during this runup to Election Day and let those running, or already serving, know what we voters have a right to expect from them. We expect these things to be consistent, not performative, and each to be an explicit demonstration of who they really are!

Integrity: We expect that you, Mr. and Mrs. Elected Official, know the difference between truth and error, good and evil, transparency and hypocrisy, and will live up to the highest standards of integrity even when it hurts you. What we don’t want is your finger in the wind as you decide what path will preserve your electability.

If you call evil good, and try to put lipstick on a pig, we’ll know, and never let you get away with it. Don’t even try to shade the truth. Give us the truth!

We can handle it. As Martin Luther King, Jr put it: “The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of chal-

lenge and controversy.”

Discipline/Self-government: We expect you to lead a disciplined life in getting your job done.

You will read all you’re supposed to read, learn all you must know, make every meeting we’ve elected you to attend, and demonstrate the self-government we expect: No sexual dalliances. No fraud. No derogatory or coarse language, and certainly no character defamation toward anyone.

Remember, you’re supposed to be an example of the best we have to offer.

We have the right to expect you to live up to the privilege of public service.

Humility: No, you’re not special because you managed to get enough people to vote for you. We expect you to be humble, eschew the trappings of entitlement and display true humility consistently. I have a favorite quote from Psalm 138 that speaks to the nature of Almighty God: “For though the LORD is high, he regards the lowly, but the haughty he knows from afar.”

You should try following his example.

Accessibility: OK, here’s a big one.

We expect that we can talk to you, correspond with you, and maybe even be useful to you at a reasonable level.

Don’t send all our requests to your scheduler. Don’t create hoops we have to go through to communicate with you. We don’t expect to have regular times with you or even get a personal email every week. But neither will we allow you to use doing your job as a massive wall of protection from the very people your job is all about!

Independent Decisions. We expect

that you will assess every situation, regulation, decision and position, rather than follow the “herd mentality” that allows party powers to determine how you think, what you say, and how you vote. I did not elect a party or a promise; I voted for you, and I expect you to be up to the job. Do your own study! Put everything through your own intellectual grid, and vote your integrity and conscience. If I disagree, at least you’ll have reasons for doing what you did, and that’s all I’m asking.

Be Collaborative: Listen to everyone and be winsome enough to have coffee with political opponents. We are fed up with the divisive tone politics has taken. Too often, we see elected officials doing and saying things that widen the divide. After Lindsey Graham’s promotion to glory, many on both sides of the aisle celebrated how he could engage everyone in conversation, even his most ardent opponents.

This reminded me of that poignant line in Katharine Lee Bates’ poem that became our musical gem, “America the Beautiful.” She wrote: “America, America, God shed his grace on thee.

And crown thy good with brotherhood, from sea to shining sea.”

We sure could use a heaping helping of brotherhood, sisterhood and good ol’ camaraderie both in our citizenship and our leadership. So, Mr. and Mrs. Elected Official, rise up and meet our expectations. You work for us, and every few years we get to do your employee appraisal and review with a little piece of paper called the ballot.
