Keeping Your Pet Safe and Cool this SCV Summer

anta Clarita’s triple-digit summers bring intense heat, scorching pavement and dry canyon winds — conditions that can quickly become dangerous for pets. From early signs of heat stress to safe walking times and hydration strategies, understanding how to protect animals during peak heat is essential for every local pet owner.

As temperatures climb, the earliest signs of heat stress often appear subtle. Excessive panting, seeking shade or refusing to continue walking are common indicators that a dog is beginning to struggle. For cats, the warning signs are even more distinct.

“For cats, any open-mouth breathing or panting is never normal behavior,” said Christopher A. Valles, public information officer for the Los Angeles County Department of Animal Care and Control.

He noted that in Santa Clarita’s summer conditions, mild symptoms can escalate rapidly. “Early symptoms can turn into dangerous heat-related illness in a matter of minutes — especially during exercise or

Walking Dogs Safely Early or Late, Never Midday

To reduce heat exposure, Valles recommends shifting walking routines to cooler hours.

“The safest walking times during the summer heat are early morning — ideally before noon — or after sunset once the ground temperatures decline.”

Owners should shorten routes, choose shaded or grassy paths, slow their pace, add rest breaks and carry cool water.

Beware of pavement temperatures. “It can burn paw pads in seconds.”

Santa Clarita’s pavement becomes dangerously hot in July and August.

“Pavement temperatures can reach 130 to 160 degrees when air temperatures are in the high 90s to 100s,” Valles said. “These temperatures can burn paw pads in seconds.”

He recommends the Seven Second Test: place your hand on the pavement and see if you can keep it there comfortably. If not, it’s too hot for paws.

Handheld infrared thermometers are also helpful on local trails.

Hydration That Helps — and What to Avoid

Effective hydration and cooling strategies include:

• Cool, fresh water offered frequently • Frozen pet-safe treats, such as broth ice cubes • Adding moisture to food • Indoor cooling with fans, AC or cooling mats • Shaded breaks during outdoor activity Valles cautioned against human electrolyte drinks or powders. “Many contain ingredients unsafe for pets,” he said. “And overusing ice when a pet is already overheated may worsen stomach upset.”

Boarding and Daycare: Questions That Matter For owners using boarding or daycare during summer travel, Valles recommends asking: • What cooling systems are in place?

• How often are pets monitored for heat stress?

• Is outdoor play modified or canceled on high temperature days?

A

s summer travel picks up across Southern California, families are seeking experiences that go beyond the typical day at the zoo or aquarium — and a handful of wildlife institutions are offering exactly that.

From drifting to sleep beside beluga whales at Sea World San Diego to waking up on the edge of a savanna at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park, overnight animal adventures are giving guests rare, after hours access to the natural world.

Sea World San Diego

Families looking for an overnight adventure with ocean wildlife can find it at Sea World San Diego, where the park’s long running Sleepovers program continues through summer. The experience gives guests a rare opportunity to fall asleep beside some of the park’s most iconic species — including turtles, beluga whales and penguins — while learning about marine conservation in a hands-on setting.

Designed for youth groups, schools, and scout troops, the program blends education with exploration. Participants take part in guided activities led by Sea World’s education team, who introduce guests to the animals’ behaviors, habitats, and care routines. The evening includes a pasta dinner, followed by structured learning sessions inside des-

ignated animal areas. Guests roll out their sleeping bags in one of several indoor habitats, depending on availability and animal needs. In the morning, the program continues with breakfast, additional activities, and full park admission for the rest of the day.

Sea World emphasizes that its sleepover venues may vary throughout the year, but the core experience remains the same: an overnight stay inside the park, surrounded by marine life. The program is offered year round, and Sea World confirms that sleepovers remain available during July and August, making it a viable option for families planning summer travel.

The sleepovers require a minimum group size of 25, making them especially popular with organized youth programs. Space is limited, and reservations are required in advance. Ask if your small group can join an existing group.

Meghan Breen, public relations representative for the San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance, said

the program is designed to give visitors a rare after hours perspective of the Safari Park — one that daytime guests never get to see.

Participants can choose from Classic, Vista or Premium tents, allowing visitors to tailor their stay from traditional camping to a more comfortable, upgraded experience. Each sleepover includes camp activities, guided walks, an after hours wildlife experience, s’mores around the campfire, dinner, an evening snack, and breakfast the following morning.

Breen said what sets Roar & Snore apart is the opportunity to experience the park at night, surrounded by wildlife and guided by experts who share stories about the animals and the organization’s conservation work. Themed sleepovers are offered throughout the year for families, adults, Girl Scouts, and school or youth groups, creating options for a wide range of ages and interests.

“The goal is to create a fun, memorable, and immersive wildlife adventure that helps guests connect more deeply with animals and the natural world,” Breen explained.

Beyond entertainment, the program aims to inspire curiosity, appreciation for wildlife, and a stronger connection to conservation through closeup encounters and hands-on learning.

The Zoo’s Zoo Camp Academy — designed for students entering 5th through 8th grade — includes an immersive overnight component that gives young conservationists a rare chance to explore the Zoo after dark. This year’s program features a special sleepover on August 6, part of a week long camp focused on conservation, restoration, and hands-on learning.

Make A Difference at the Annual River Rally

W

hat can 1,200 volunteers accomplish in just three hours? More than you might think. Every year, the River Rally transforms a single Saturday morning into one of Santa Clarita’s most impactful community traditions. Neighbors, families, students, scout troops, businesses and community organizations roll up their sleeves with one shared goal: protecting one of our community’s most valuable natural resources for future generations.

On Saturday, Sept. 19, from 8-11 a.m., the City of Santa Clarita will host its 31st Annual River Rally Cleanup and Environmental Expo, continuing one of our community’s longest-running volunteer initiatives. Registration opens on Mon., Aug. 3, and I encourage everyone to sign up early. For more than three decades, this event has united volunteers in a morning of service that leaves a lasting impact.

Since the event began in 1994, volunteers have re-

moved more than 510,000 pounds of trash from the Santa Clara River, helping preserve one of Southern California’s last natural, free-flowing river systems.

The Santa Clara River provides habitat for a wide variety of wildlife, including several endangered species, while also helping recharge our local groundwater supply, an essential resource for Santa Clarita. By removing litter and debris from the riverbed, volunteers help protect this unique ecosystem for future generations. Whether you’re a first-time volunteer or someone who has participated year after year, the River Rally offers a rewarding experience for all ages. The City provides cleanup supplies, and volunteers are encouraged to bring reusable water bottles and wear comfortable clothing suitable for outdoor work.

This year’s event will begin at the Newhall Community Center (22421 Market St), where volunteers will help clean a tributary of the Santa Clara riverbed before enjoying the Environmental Expo. The Expo features local nonprofits, community organi-

zations and environmental partners sharing practical information about recycling, pollution prevention, watershed protection and sustainable living. It’s an opportunity to learn something new while celebrating our community’s commitment to environmental stewardship.

As we prepare for another successful event, I encourage you to mark your calendar and register as soon as sign-ups open on August 3. Invite your family, gather your coworkers, organize your scout troop or simply come on your own. The River Rally has made a meaningful impact for more than 30 years, and this year’s event is another opportunity to give back to our community and protect our local environment.

Growing Herbs All Summer Long

T

he golden rule of real estate is also the secret to growing herbs through the hot summer months and into fall: location, location, location.

Choose the best planting location available, keeping your region’s climate in mind. Bodacious basils, tasty thymes, marvelous mints, and other herbs should be given protection in areas with prolonged heat and intense afternoon sun during the hottest months.

Even full-sun herbs that normally prefer eight or more hours a day — like rosemary, basil, thyme, and oregano — can make do with six in hotter climates.

Likewise, partial-shade herbs that may want six hours of sun in cooler months or regions — mint, cilantro, dill, parsley, and chives — can still thrive with three hours per day in warmer regions. Plan accordingly.

Containers that are big enough to host several plants but small enough to be moved are a handy way to adjust the amount of sunlight plants will get.

This is particularly useful if they start to appear sunburned — signs include bleached, white, yellow, or crinkly brown patches on sun-facing leaves. Keep in mind that container plants will need more watering than if they were growing in the ground. Tender perennials (like rosemary and lemongrass) do particularly well in containers, since they can be moved indoors to overwinter without the trauma of disturbing their roots.

Shade cloth is a popular way to protect herbs in the ground or a large container while allowing them to get sufficient hours of light. In general, a 30-50% shade cloth is recommended for midday sun.

Tight budget? An old-fashioned alternative is to drape a sheet or open a patio umbrella over the plants during the hottest hours of the day.

Planting herbs in dappled sunlight, where trees provide varying levels of shade based on their leaf density, is another option.

Oregano is native to the dry, hot Mediterranean and will spread easily. Marjoram, which makes an excellent oregano substitute, is another heat-resilient option that should be pruned regularly to keep stems herbaceous, not woody. Though not a true oregano, large-leafed, spicy Cuban oregano is the most brawny of all and thrives on benign neglect and regular harvesting.

Not just for Thanksgiving dinner, rosemary and sage both require minimal watering and don’t like to get “wet feet.” Harvest regularly to keep them young and productive.

Tropical lemongrass, which can do double duty as a summer ornamental landscape grass (or year round in some southern climes), offers limited bug-repelling properties as well as culinary benefits.

It likes to be consistently moist, so consider installing an irrigation system or planting it adjacent to a lawn with a sprinkler system.

Gardeners with limited space will find that most herbs do well as border plantings or in flower beds and, of course, as companion plants for vegetables.

Mints are a staple of cool summer iced teas and drinks, from common spearmint and peppermint to the multitude of exotics (orange, chocolate, apple, pineapple, mojito, and banana, to name just a few)

available at garden centers and online. An east-facing location along the home or fence is ideal, as it will give the plants morning sun but protect them for the rest of the day. Keep them well watered and out of the direct sun between 1-4 p.m. if you live in a hot climate.

Spearmint, peppermint, apple, chocolate, and Moroccan mint (which has a moderately floral flavor) tend to be more heat-resistant. Their cousins lemon balm and catnip will also produce nicely when well-watered.

Chives, with their light onion flavor and edible purple flowers, and garlic chives, with their flatter leaves, garlic ambiance, and edible white flowers, will do well with as few as three hours of morning sun per day. Keep chives well-watered and harvest leaves often.

While cilantro is a key ingredient in Mexican cuisine, it actually doesn’t like hot temperatures. The solution? Choose a flower-delaying, slow-bolt variety like Calypso or Delfino, and plan to do some succession planting (start replacement seedlings indoors and plant out as needed). There are also slowbolt, heat-tolerant dill varieties such as bouquet and fernleaf, and flat-leaf parsley will stand up to a harsh summer better than curly-leafed varieties.

The Last Harvest

Make sure to let some plants go to seed, and save those seeds in a cool, dry place to plant next year.

What Code Inspectors Wish Homeowners Knew

hen homeowners doing work on their property consider a cheaper route, for example, hiring a contractor who doesn’t want to pull permits, they may not realize the risk they are taking. But they should know that there is no “undo” button on a disaster.

The International Code Council campaigns for the need to adopt modern, regularly-updated building codes and helps communities understand what it takes to create safe, sustainable structures.

Egress

Albert Joseph Rocco Jr., the deputy building official in the Building Division for the City of Kissimmee, Florida, says one of the most important safety concepts is the The Path of Egress. Codes require bedroom windows to be a specific size so occupants can escape a fire, and so firefighters can get in while wearing their equipment. “Any modification, like adding bars to windows or changing a floor plan, must preserve that clear path to the outside.”

Rocco also recommends keeping the area around bedroom windows clutter-free. “In an emergency, time spent removing items from the exit path are valuable seconds that might make the difference.”

Decks and Balconies

Rocco notes that one often-ignored at-home maintenance task is inspecting exterior deck and balcony framing integrity. Deck ledger boards often fail because the connection to the house rots or was never flashed correctly. This is something people don’t think about until it collapses.

Tips to Grow Wealth After You Retire

ersonal finances and retirement are inextricably linked.

Retirement planning services and advocates emphasize the significance of building a sizable nest egg for the days when professionals are no longer working, but many now also note the importance of building that nest egg after retiring.

The need to build wealth even after retiring reflects a trend that has seen people spend more time in retirement over the last half century than in the decades prior. According to the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development, men could expect to spend just under 13 years in retirement and women 16.6 years in retirement in 1970. By 2020, the expected retirement length had reached 18.6 years for men and 21.3 years for

women. That means modern professionals will spend a half decade more in retirement than people did in 1970.

Those extra five years require more money for living expenses, which is why it can be so important for modern professionals to consider various ways to grow their wealth even after they call it a career.

Avoid early withdrawals Withdrawals from a 401(k) are taxed like regular income because such accounts are built up with pre-tax contributions.

But there are ways to minimize your tax burden, and thus save money, when withdrawing from a 401(k).

Avoiding early withdrawals, which are those taken before age 59-1/2, is one easy way to avoid a higher tax burden. Early withdrawals can trigger a 10% tax on top of the income taxes

account holders will have to pay. By avoiding early withdrawals, retirees are building wealth by lowering their tax burden.

Take the required minimum distribution when you must Another way to avoid a tax burden that can diminish your wealth in retirement is to take your required minimum distribution (RMD) when you need to. The Internal Revenue Services reports that account owners who fail to withdraw the full amount of the RMD by the due date are subject to a 25% excise tax on the amount not withdrawn (the tax burden is 10% if timely corrected within two years). The IRS notes account owners must take their first RMD for the year in which they turn 73.

A Revealing Perspective The July 11 opinion page provides a revealing perspective on “love of country” through the backdrop of the World Cup competition. First, Brian Richards in his letter, “They Love America More,” chastises “leftists” by referring to “video from foreigners touting how great this country is. From the landscape to the food to the friendliness of Americans, it seems that you’ve all forgotten and take for granted what this country is and what it offers and what it’s given you.”

Although “visitors” would be a more welcoming word than “foreigners,” he is correct that it is a tribute to our country that our guests from all over the world had a positive, fun-filled and welcoming experience here in America.

In the following letter, “A World Cup Experience,” Patrick Daems (a naturalized immigrant from Belgium) shares his wonderful experience attending the Belgium-Iran soccer match at SoFi Stadium. He observes, “Throughout the game the Iranian fans are shouting ‘Iran! Iran! Iran!’ It’s clear, 99% hates the current regime, but intrinsically loves the country they had to leave.”

Herein lies that revealing perspective: There is a distinct possibility that those so-called “leftists” referred to in the first letter actually do love our country. Like their Iranian counterparts, they may just hate the current regime.

This is not intended to equate Donald Trump with Ali Khamenei, although extremists on both sides are likely to attempt that leap. It is simply meant to point out that it is both possible to love one’s country and to object to the actions of its leadership at the same time.

Critique, Civility and Community

s I have watched, listened and grieved the erosion of civility in our society among those who make and report the news, the course we’ve taken has finally become clear.

It used to be that criticism was confined to what a person did, what they said, or how they appeared. When some local or national figure acted unseemly, or spouted pronouncements that didn’t make sense, or made promises they couldn’t keep, or when some movie star walked the red carpet in an absurd getup, their actions were critiqued as unwise, foolish, careless, manipulative, shocking, or any of a host of other adjectives that labeled their actions in a negative way. They were hounded for their words, their obvious lack of knowledge, their preposterous posture, or some other obvious flaw.

But, at the same time, it was understood that good people can make mistakes, can say and do things that are unacceptable to some, and generally get themselves in hot water, especially when they live in the public eye where everything they do, say, or wear is recorded, reported and critiqued. We as a nation critiqued their mistakes and left it at that.

Of course, over time, when someone kept making mistakes, impossible promises and ridiculous assertions, and continued acting in ways that were misleading, shocking, and even immoral, critique shifted from actions to character. We went deeper in our ridicule and proclaimed that the person made mistakes because they were evil.

We see quite a bit of that today. We have somehow come to the place where we have redefined what used to be understood as thoughtless mistakes, misspoken words, and even pure stupidity as the evil of the soul leaking out all over the place.

We see this all too often today. We’ve largely gone from judging actions to castigating character, and all too often the determination is made that the level of flawed character makes the person irredeemable. What used to be reported as a mistake is now declared to be a character flaw, and the language is getting dirtier and more violent.

What I’m trying to show is the evolution of our divisive

rhetoric, and the corresponding erosion of civil critique. We used to critique actions.

But now we jump right to character. And that’s not the end of the road.

In the past few months, we have moved from critiquing actions and demeaning character to impugning a person’s nature. I can say it simply: Those we don’t like are not just foolish or even flawed in their character.

They are evil. They are by nature evil human beings and should never have a place in our

world.

If you’ve been playing with open eyes and an open mind, you’ve seen national figures say their opponents should be run over and left for dead. They should be put in a sack and thrown down a well. We’ve read that some even declare their opponents should be assassinated or spend the rest of their lives behind bars because they are irredeemably evil. And they say this even as they applaud when known violent criminals are released or pardoned.

Friends, it is clear that this erosion of civil critique has filtered down from the newsmakers to our own hearts.

We’re losing the fundamental premise of civil society that we really are in this together. We’re forgetting that love for neighbor – every neighbor as fellow human being – is the foundation of any ordered, productive and satisfying society. All around us, civility is gasping for air even as we everywhere hear the call for collaboration, cooperation, and unity. Ha! It’s hard to have unity when, first thing in the morning, we are sharpening our tongues.

So, in closing, go ahead and critique my writing, my opinion, even my moral philosophy and my theology.

But for the love of reason and peace, don’t rush to brand me as evil and fill my mailbox with hateful, inflammatory rhetoric. Instead, help me see your side with reasoned, well-thought-out, and well-written arguments. After all, haven’t we got enough evil already? What we need is a bit more knowledge applied to life as wisdom. What we need is a strong belief that we truly must be “one nation, under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all,” including those who make us so mad we could wish them dead.
