Easter Egg Hunts and Other Eggceptional Traditions

Easter is celebrated in various ways. Traditional religious commemorations include Saturday evening Easter vigils and Sunday morning Resurrection masses. Parents may spend Easter weekend putting the finishing touches on Easter Bunny baskets, and many families favor a combination of traditions.

Since religious as well as secular imagery and traditions have melded to form the Easter most individuals recognize today, a mix of customs may be part of your Easter festivities. Among them will be colored eggs, egg hunts and possibly even egg rolls. Just how was the Easter egg tradition hatched?

Pre-Christian Societies

Before Christianity was as widespread as it is in modern times, many societies associated eggs with spring and new life. Many birds and animals lay eggs early in spring, and these eggs tend to hatch upon the arrival of the warm weather, budding flowers and buzzing insects.

Ancient Persians are believed to have painted eggs for Nowrooz, their new year celebration that would fall on the spring equinox each year.

Eggs also have been part of Passover celebrations. A hard-boiled egg dipped in salt water is served at a Passover seder, symbolizing both new life away from oppression and the Passover sacrifice at the Temple in Jerusalem, according to Chabad.org.

Lent, Christianity and Eggs

In medieval times, eating eggs was forbidden during Lent, when both dairy and meat were avoided. To reduce waste, eggs laid during Lent were boiled or preserved in some way.

The fast ended on Easter Sunday, and eggs became, once again, important and nutritious staples — especially for poor families that couldn’t afford much meat. Eggs also were given to the church by

medieval English villagers and also to the lords of the manor. Royals eventually got in on the act, and decorated eggs were distributed to the household in a tradition that was one of the earliest to include eggs.

Easter Egg Hunts

Come Easter Sunday, eager children wake up to see if the Easter Bunny has visited their homes. For many families, Easter would not be the same without an annual egg hunt. From chocolate confections to money-filled plastic shells to colorful, hand-decorated hard-boiled eggs, the Easter Bunny (and his parental helpers) hide eggs all around.

As with many traditions, people may engage in the festivities without really understanding the origins behind the fun. It can be interesting to unearth just how such egg hunts were hatched.

As with many religious traditions, Easter egg coloring and hunts trace their origins to pre-Christian societies. These societies developed

rituals surrounding nature, the seasons and more. Some traditions were adapted to link them to the Christian faith. Eggs held associations with new life and spring.

However, early Christians turned the egg into a symbol of the Resurrection and the empty shell became a representation of Christ’s tomb. Eggs also were important components of the Easter holiday, as they were prohibited (like meat) during Lent. But on Easter, fasting ended and eggs were a part of Easter celebrations, particularly for the poor who couldn’t afford meat.

There are two widely known accounts of the origins of Easter egg hunts. The religious version has Protestant reformer Martin Luther organizing hunts for his congregation. The men would hide the eggs for women and children to find, which mirrors Resurrection accounts in the Bible in which women discovered Christ’s empty tomb.

Another account traces the tradition to the Dutch tale of the “Oschter Haws” (“Osterhase” in German), which was a hare that laid eggs in the grass. Children would build and decorate nests for the eggs and wait to see if they would be populated, according to Discovery.com. This tradition became popular in America with the arrival of Dutch and German settlers in Pennsylvania in the 1700s. By the 20th century, decorated Easter nests were replaced with baskets, and Osterhase was more affectionately known as the Easter Bunny, who chose to leave eggs as well as treats and candy. Easter celebrations continued to marry both the religious and secular to form many of the customs that are known widely today.

Easter egg hunts are enjoyed by the young and old on Easter. They’re a key part of celebrations. Just remember to find all those hard-boiled eggs in a timely fashion. (MC) 

Christians and even many non-Christians likely know that Easter is the Christian celebration of the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Less widely known may be the origins of the name of this significant holiday.

Historians are not certain about the precise origins of the name “Easter.” Some believe the name can be traced to the English monk Bede, often referred to as “St. Bede the Venerable” or “The Venerable Bede.”

According to History.com, in his most famous work, Ecclesiastical History of the English People, Bede asserts that the English word “Easter” can be

traced to “Eostre” or “Eostrae,” which is the pagan Anglo-Saxon goddess of spring.

Many historians past and present echo this sentiment and believe Eostre is the namesake of Easter. However, others believe “Easter” comes from the Latin phrase “in albis,” which is plural for “alba” (dawn).

That phrase became “eostarum” in Old High German, a language that historians have connected to Old English. Though which camp is correct may never be resolved, there’s no denying that the word “Easter” represents the same spirit of rebirth that Christians celebrate each spring. (MC) 

Exploring Easter Traditions From Around the World

Easter is a special day for Christians across the globe. While the highlight of Easter celebrations are the religious events, particularly the vigils and church services, Easter fanfare sometimes stretches beyond church walls.

The following are some Easter traditions across the globe. Travelers should confirm the festivities are still on as COVID-19 restrictions continue to be put in place in various locales.

Bermuda

Celebrants create and fly homemade kites on Good Friday Kitefest, which features bold, geometric designs. It’s also traditional to eat codfish and hot cross buns during Holy Week. On Easter Sunday, the faithful participate in sunrise services on various Bermuda beaches.

Costa Rica

Costa Ricans take Holy Week and Easter quite seriously. Each town hosts parades and processions during Holy Week, providing dramatic re-enactments of Jesus’ journey through Jerusalem to his crucifixion and resurrection.

England

Good Friday visitors to Trafalgar Square can see a classic dramatization of Jesus’ resurrection. “The Passion of Jesus” is a 90-minute performance that attracts thousands of visitors.

France

Many people visit the famed Notre Dame Cathedral to hear its bells toll throughout Easter Sunday. A fire destroyed a portion of the cathedral roof in 2019 and repairs are still underway. There also are Paris Easter egg hunts. Parisians and tourists also can visit La Sainte Chapelle, which offers Easter concerts consisting of classical music and choral singers.

Israel

Israel is a melting pot of both Jewish and Christian faithful. Easter is a solemn celebration here. In Old Jerusalem, faithful pilgrims and priests walk the Via Dolorosa, which is the same path that Jesus took on the day he was crucified. The Way of the Cross, which is what the procession is called, is among the most amazing sights in the world.

Italy

Easter is special in Italy and particularly in Vatican City, the home of the Pope. The Pope holds a special mass on Easter in Saint Peter’s Square,

which traditionally draws huge crowds. Elsewhere in Italy, masses take place at area churches and many towns host parades and other celebrations.

Mexico

Holy Week reenactments take place in devout

areas of Mexico. Residents in other areas may take part in silent processions through town, or by visiting 12 churches in 12 days.

Easter is a time of celebration and reflection in various parts of the world. (MC) 

Significance of the Red Easter Egg

Easter eggs are decorated in many hues before they’re ultimately hidden for youngsters to find. While pastel-colored eggs are the norm, one color has particular religious significance for those who want to go a bit bolder with their egg displays.

It is tradition among Orthodox Christians to exchange red eggs. According to History.com, red eggs are associated with Mary Magdalene and her role in Christianity. After the Ascension of Christ, Mary Magdalene went to the Roman emperor and greeted him with “Christ is Risen.” He then stated, “Christ has not risen no more than that egg is red (pointing to an egg on his table).” After making the

statement, the egg turned blood red. Mary Magdalene then began preaching Christianity to him, and the red egg has come to symbolize the blood of Christ redeeming the world.

Easter Bunny

Another symbol that people could be forgiven for mistaking as purely secular, the Easter Bunny is not entirely separate from the spiritual meaning of the holiday. As noted, Easter, even though it’s a moveable feast, takes place in spring in the northern hemisphere each year.

Spring is symbolic of rebirth, and the hare was a symbol of fertility among the ancient pagans. The spirit of rebirth associated with rabbits, particularly in spring, also is reminiscent of the resurrection of Jesus from his tomb. (MC) 

Medical Experts Offer Tips To Ease Chronic Pain

If you’re coping with back, neck or knee pain on a regular basis, you’re not alone. According to research, one in every two Americans experience musculoskeletal (MSK) pain, which affects the bones, tendons, ligaments, muscles and nerves.

The 2024 State of MSK survey of 10,000 Americans with chronic and acute pain conducted by Hinge Health shows that pain is too big a problem to ignore.

Nearly half the survey respondents say chronic pain prevents them from living life to the fullest (47%), while 27% report MSK pain has decreased their productivity at work, and 22% agree it has made them consider leaving their job.

Beyond physical symptoms, chronic pain is also associated with poor mental health. About one-third of survey respondents report feeling depressed, and nearly half report anxiety.

“We live in a nation in pain,” said Dr. Jeff Krauss, MD, chief medical officer at Hinge Health. “And many are not accessing what doctors consider the first-line treatment for MSK pain: physical therapy, education and lifestyle change.”

The survey found people with chronic pain are more likely to seek over-the-counter or prescription pain medications, despite the fact that 47% of people who do not feel in control of their pain fear side effects or complications from those treatment methods.

In some cases, the real or imagined cost of physical therapy, plus the ability to make in-person appointments, can be barriers. Fortunately, digital PT has helped overcome one barrier.

In the survey, 48% of people say a digital physical therapy program would make it easier to follow their care plan, and 43% say they “need” PT care with a digital component.

Digital PT stands out as the preferred initial approach for chronic MSK pain, with a 70% satisfaction rate among members.

Here is some advice from physical therapists at Hinge Health for coping

with MSK pain, including moving around safely for pain management, increasing motion and boosting sleep. Note: This information is for educational purposes only, and you should always consult your healthcare provider for your unique situation.

Keep Moving

When experiencing pain, it’s natural to want to stop moving, hoping that rest will make the pain stop. Unfortunately, staying still can lead to a downward cycle — with pain increasing and mobility decreasing.

“Movement is medicine,” said Dr. Krauss, “and many kinds of pain worsen if you rest too much. Staying active can help you work through joint stiffness and help muscles gain strength over time, which can improve your symptoms.”

If your pain is due to an accident or physical trauma, or if you’re concerned about increasing pain as you move, see your healthcare provider. Ask about in-person or digital PT options for guidance on how to move safely as part of your pain management plan.

Move and Stretch Gently

Motion can help relieve stiffness and reduce pain over time, with physical therapists recommending an approach to movement that gradually increases your strength and range of motion.

Back pain Stretching is helpful, but avoid awkward twisting, bending or motions that lead to over-tensing back muscles.

Neck pain/stiffness Take breaks from holding one position too long, such as sitting at your computer. Set a timer to occasionally adjust your position, gently stretch your neck or roll your shoulders.

Knee pain Strengthen muscles that protect your knee, especially your quads (the front of your thighs), with exercises like stepping up to and down from a low platform.

A physical therapist can help you learn specific exercises and stretches to support areas of your body causing you chronic pain. Beyond reducing pain, PT can also help treat other conditions, such as strengthening the pelvic floor to address bladder issues.

Boost Sleep

Pain makes it hard to get a restful night’s sleep, and poor sleep can increase sensitivity to pain — leading to another downward spiral. The survey found over half of people (53%) who have experienced pain in the past 12 months say it affects their sleep, and 26% have been diagnosed with a sleep disorder. Here are tips to try: Change your pillow To improve sleep, especially with neck pain, swap out your pillow. Your ideal pillow depends on the issues you’re having and your preferred sleep position. Try different kinds for several nights to find what works for you.

Practice good sleep hygiene Keep your room cool and dark, and make sure to go to sleep and wake at the same time each day.

Relaxation techniques Meditation, breathing exercises or warm baths can help you relax before bedtime.

“Making an effort to improve your sleep is an important step in treating pain,” said Dr. Krauss. “While there are many easy and effective ways to do this on your own, sometimes it’s necessary to work with a professional who can offer proven techniques, such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) for insomnia.”

An Up-Close Look at California’s Diverse Wildlife

From dolphins and whale watching to birds, butterflies and bison, California abounds with opportunities to see and enjoy wildlife.

More than 600 species of birds have been observed in California. That represents about twothirds of all bird species in North America. From the coast to the deserts to the high Sierras, California offers an abundance of wildlife-viewing opportunities.

Locally, Santa Clarita is home to a wide variety of wildlife including deer, coyotes, hawks, woodpeckers, hummingbirds, rabbits, lizards, snakes, skunks, racoons, opossums, bobcats and the occasional mountain lion.

You can learn about local wildlife at the Placerita Canyon Nature Center and Vasquez Rocks Natural Center. Both centers offer staff, volunteer and docent-led activities, tours and programs.

The Gibbon Conservation Center in Santa Clarita is the only organization in the world devoted to the study, preservation and public education of the gibbon. The gibbon is a small, endangered primate from the dwindling rainforests of Asia.

The center offers tours and a chance for visitors to become a caretaker for a day, allowing guests to assist the staff with the center’s nearly 40 gibbons. Reservations are required.

Known as the “Galapagos of North America,” the Channel Islands include the five islands of Santa Cruz, Anacapa, Santa Rosa, Santa Barbara and San Miguel. They are located about an hour off the coast of Ventura.

Considered a nature lovers paradise, the islands are home to several species that can only be found in the Channel Islands National Park.

For example, the islands are the only major

breeding site in the western United States for California brown pelicans and are home to a special breed of foxes.

Ninety-nine percent of all Southern California seabirds hatch on the Channel Islands before departing to different beaches along the southern California coast.

The islands’ isolation over thousands of years has created unique animals, plants and archeological resources found nowhere else on Earth and helped preserve a place where visitors can experience coastal southern California as it once was.

Operated by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service the Guadalupe-Nipomo Dunes National Wildlife Refuge is in the heart of an 18-mile-long coastal dunes complex.

The National Natural Landmark refuge is home to more than 120 species of rare plants and animals and covers almost two miles of beachfront, extending three miles inland.

Northern California

Often called the “Serengeti of the Sea,” the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary is one of the best places in the world to see marine wildlife. You can see seals, sea lions, sea otters, whales, dolphins and seabirds any time of year.

The Lower Klamath National Wildlife Refuge, located in rural northeastern California and Southern Oregon, was established by President Theodore Roosevelt in 1908 as the nation’s first waterfowl refuge.

With a backdrop of 14,000-foot Mount Shasta to the southwest, it is no wonder that the refuge is listed in the National Register of Historic Places as a National Historic Landmark. As such, it is operated by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

Wildlife on Camera

For those who enjoy viewing wildlife from the

comfort of your home, wildlife-viewing cameras are a fun way to spy on Mother Nature in action within impacting them.

The Friends of Big Bear Valley have set up a camera with a beautiful view of Big Bear Lake and Big Bear’s famous Bald Eagles, Jackie and Shadow who are were on a much anticpated pip watch.

However, it appears that none of the three eggs laid this season are viable as baby eagles usually will emerge from the shell on average 35 days after the egg is laid.

Pip watch began Feb. 29, 35 days after Jackie delivered the first of her three eggs. Eagles usually only lay one clutch of eggs per year, but can lay a second clutch if the first set fail.

To see Jackie and Shadow’s nest visit www.friends ofbigbearvalley.org/

Bird Cams

The Cornell Lab Bird Cams connect viewers worldwide to the diverse and intimate world of birds. The cameras are viewable at AllAboutBirds. org which offers a large variety of live bird cams. From owls to ospreys, find your favorite bird and take a peek at what the birds are up to today. Visit www.allaboutbirds.org/cams.

Wildlife Cams

Thousands of wildlife viewing cams are available from various websites throughout the internet. From underwater cams to inside a honeybee hive visit https://explore.org/livecams.

Coastal California wildlife cams with links provided by the California Coastal Commission are a great way to study coastal habitat or to take a break from the here and now. Check out the sea lions on Pier 39 in San Francisco Bay or watch the harbor seals in LaJolla.

Indulge Taste Buds with Better-for-You Snacks

The foundation of healthy eating may include nutritious breakfasts, lunches and dinners, but just as important are the snacks in-between meals. Regardless of when or where you snack, encourage better-foryou eating habits with nutritious nibbles to power through your day.

According to an online survey conducted among 1,000 Americans ages 18 and older across the U.S. by Wakefield Research on behalf of the American Pecan Promotion Board, Americans love snacks, and reach for them an average of three times a day.

However, where and when those snacks are eaten can vary from on the move to on the couch, from sunrise to after bedtime. Nearly a third (30%) of respondents are munching on snacks while in bed, calling it their favorite snacking spot. However, only 35% of their snack choices are considered healthy.

Fueling busy days can be easy with an option like pecans. According to the survey, 66% of snackers enjoy pecans on their own with 58% eating them as part of a trail mix. If you're among the 50% who reach for a snack in the late afternoon, you can turn to nutritious, satisfying solutions to indulge afternoon cravings without the guilt. With pleasing crunch, comforting creaminess and a satisfying chew, pecans are the "no sacrifice" nut that can punch up your routine with both delicious taste and plant-based nutrition.

Just a handful of pecans — about 19 halves — provides a good source of fiber, thiamin and zinc and an excellent source of copper and manganese,

a mineral that's essential for metabolism and bone health. They also provide a mix of protein and good fats — 18 grams of unsaturated fat, including oleic acid, and only 2 grams of unsaturated fat — to help keep you full and energized throughout the day.

As an added bonus, their versatility and easyto-pair profile makes them a perfect ingredient in recipes you can prepare in a cinch. For bite-sized treats that are packed with flavor and perfect for snack time, these Pecan Chickpea Cookie Dough Bites swap out flour and sugar in favor of blended pecans, chickpeas, vanilla extract, cinnamon and sea salt with dark chocolate chips folded in for a

‘Palm Royale’ Has a Kind of ‘Mad Men With Women in the Leads’ Vibe

‘Palm Royale’

A 10-episode series available Wednesday on Apple TV+.

“There’s an old saw here that goes: When you first come to Palm Beach, you think you’re the oldest and the richest, and then you realize, you’re the youngest and the poorest.” — Kristen Wiig’s Maxine Simmons in “Palm Royale.”

It takes all of Kristen Wiig’s magnificent arsenal of comedic and dramatic weapons to launch “Palm Royale” to the land of Worth Your Time Investment. In this 10-part series from Apple TV+ set in Palm Beach high society in 1969, Wiig delivers a virtuoso performance in a role that calls for physical shtick, near-manic mood swings, a song or two, a dance or two

Sunday-Thursday, March 24-28, 2024 W

and a bounty of perfectly delivered line readings. Wiig can put a spin on a few words of dialogue with the best of ‘em, and she’s a master at playing characters who are sometimes painfully unaware of how they’re perceived.

Loosely based on Juliet McDaniel’s “Mr. & Mrs. American Pie,” with

Abe Sylvia serving as writer, executive producer and showrunner, “Palm Royale” has a kind of “Mad Men With Women in the Leads” vibe mixed with a tad of “White Lotus,” and while a few of the middle episodes might test your patience as the storyline meanders this way and that, this is one great-looking and stylish period piece, popping with sunny colors and often hilariously accurate and quite ridiculous fashions and hairstyles of the time.

It also doesn’t hurt that in addition to Wiig, who serves as our narrator throughout “The Season” in Palm Beach, the marvelous cast includes Allison Janney, Laura Dern, Carol Burnett, Leslie Bibb and Ricky Martin. Almost everyone in “Palm Royale” is quite awful, to varying degrees, but they’re often terribly funny as well (and occasionally empathetic) even as they scheme and plot and double-cross and triple-cross each other while smiling their way through yet another charity soiree. They picture themselves as the creme de la creme of mannered society, but they’re mostly jackals in jewels.

The legendary Carol Burnett plays Norma D’ellacourt, the grande dame of the upper class, who knows everyone’s secrets and has used that to her advantage for decades. Leslie Bibb is a rising society star who is married to the newly appointed ambassador to Luxembourg and is having an affair with the club tennis pro. Bruce Dern is the wily old cuss who is married to Evelyn, while Laura Dern’s Linda is a feminist activist, and yes, father and daughter have some great moments together.

Other key players in this swirling swamp of good manners and bad deeds include Josh Lucas as Maxine’s husband, Douglas, an airline pilot with big dreams of becoming a real estate mogul, and Kaia Gerber as a sweet manicurist who finds herself in a world of trouble, because just about everyone in this gossip-riddled, status-obsessed, shiny and superficial world eventually finds themselves in trouble.

After the almost obligatory in media res scene that won’t hold any meaning or context until deep into the series, we find Maxine literally scaling the wall of the posh and exclusive Palm Royale, where she tries desperately to pass herself off as the latest member of the smart set. But soon she is escorted off the premises by Ricky Martin’s Robert, who works as a bartender at the club but will eventually be revealed to be far more than just a “pool boy,” as some dismissively call him.

Maxine, a former beauty pageant contestant from Chattanooga, wants nothing more than to see her name in the “Shiny Sheet,” alongside such Palm Beach society icons as Allison Janney’s Evelyn, the de facto “Queen Bee” who rules the roost in town. Cut to Evelyn being honored as Volunteer of the Year for the ninth year in a row and exclaiming, “I am one humbled volunteer!” as she stands onstage in front of two golden candelabras while holding an elaborate silver tray marking the occasion and wearing a sash saying “1968 Volunteer of the Year.” Yes. Very humble indeed.

The cast is outstanding, with Gerber showing true promise and Martin taking what could have been a cliched role and creating arguably the most sympathetic character in the series.

With news clips of Richard M. Nixon explaining why America must remain in Vietnam often playing in the background, “Palm Royale” slips in a healthy serving of social commentary, reminding us that this was a time when abortion was a crime (ahem), when young men who were not privileged were being shipped off to fight an untenable war, when women were expected to know their place. Maxine is absolutely aghast when it’s suggested she’s a feminist; to her, that’s a terrible label to wear, and she just wants to wear high-fashion labels. Still, by the end of these 10 chapters, with “Palm Royale” clearly positioned to continue the story with a Season 2, Maxine has come to learn that the only person she can depend on is … Maxine. 

Easy Ideas to Stretch Your Retirement Budget

Retirement may mean you have unlimited time to enjoy each day, but it doesn’t mean you have a budget to match. You probably already know staying active is essential for aging with grace, so instead of letting limited funds keep you at home, explore some ways you can enjoy your leisure time without breaking the bank.

Hit the Gym

Many fitness centers offer special rates and programs for older adults. Hitting the track or joining a group fitness class are easy ways to socialize while getting some exercise. The discounted membership is also an investment since staying fit is important for physical and mental health.

Enjoy Early Dinner Deals

You can still enjoy dining out occasionally, especially if you take advantage of lower-cost meals designed with older adults in mind. Many specials are for meals earlier in the day, which is consistent with a growing trend toward earlier dining. According to Yelp, the number of people eating from 4-6 p.m. has grown 9% (up to 26% from 17% in 2019). Eating earlier promotes better digestion, and earlier meals are often lighter portions for smaller appetites. For example, Cracker Barrel’s Early Din-

ner Deals feature smaller portions served from 4-6 p.m. on weekdays. Menu items include a variety of homestyle favorites like chicken n’ dumplins, meatloaf, catfish and more.

Check Out the Library

Your local library is filled with hours of free entertainment, but it’s not just the kind you’ll find from getting a library card. You can undoubtedly find a book that covers any genre or interest you can name, but most local libraries also offer programming tailored to special interests and the sessions are typically offered for free or at a low cost. It’s an easy, affordable way to pick up a new skill, meet a favorite author, learn about a topic that intrigues you and more. Other resources to explore include your library’s DVD collection and internet access if you don’t have a computer at home.

Nurture a Garden

Tending a garden may seem like a seasonal activity, but you can make it a year-round hobby. Researching and planning is a good way to carry your gardening enthusiasm into the cooler months and you can start seedlings indoors to extend your growing season. While you’re digging into this lowcost pastime, remember the results of your efforts, such as fresh fruits and veggies, can help cut your

grocery costs, too.

Mind Your Money with DIY

Saving money at the grocery store is just one way you can make DIY projects work for you. There are dozens of other examples of ways you can put your skills and interests to use by passing time doing something you enjoy while benefiting your bank account. If you like to tinker with cars, figure out what repairs you can handle yourself and avoid hefty service fees. Crafting and sewing might mean you have ready-made gifts for special occasions and a way to repair or repurpose damaged clothing instead of discarding it.

Ask About Discounts

You may be surprised by how many places offer discounts for older adults that they don’t readily advertise. In some cases, you’ll find the information on their website or signage, but other times, you may find it easier to just ask. When you’re booking an appointment or checking out, inquire about discounts for older adults, including any restrictions, age requirements, the amount of the discount and other pertinent details. Sometimes the discounts are offered on certain days or for specific services, or they may require you to join a loyalty club to access the discounts. (Family Features) 

QWhen does Lisa Vanderpump’s new show premiere? Will any of the cast of “Vanderpump Rules” be in it?

— K.J.

A”Vanderpump Villa” will debut on Hulu beginning April 1. It features an all-new cast selected to work at an exclusive French estate by “The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills” alum (and restaurateur) Lisa Vanderpump.

According to Hulu, each episode follows her elite staff working and living together 24/7 while they try to provide a curated experience for their guests. Meanwhile, Vanderpump is also deciding whether she wants to make this French pop-up experience

QWhat happened to the show “Elsbeth”? They aired one episode, and now it’s gone. Has it been canceled already? — C.I.

AYou’re not the only one to ask. The new detective show — and spin-off of “The Good Wife” and “The Good Fight” — generated fantastic ratings when it premiered in late February, attracting 4.5 million viewers to CBS. The show stars Carrie

Preston as a quirky but whip-smart, “Columbo”-type lawyer from Chicago who ends up in the Big Apple. Don’t worry, though; it’s coming back.

The show begins by revealing who the murderer is each week to the audience, similar to another hit show, Peacock’s “Poker Face.” But don’t let this deter you! The fun is watching Elsbeth outwit the NYPD and trick the suspect into confessing. Her purpose is to observe the police force for any corruption, but she somehow always ends up solving their cases.

In addition to Preston, “Elsbeth” has a solid cast that includes Wendell Pierce, Carra Patterson and Gloria Reuben. Guest stars include a who’s who from past hit sitcoms, including Jesse Tyler Ferguson (“Modern Family”), Jane Krakowski (“30 Rock”), Retta (“Parks and Recreation”) and Linda Lavin (“Alice”).

Unfortunately, “Elsbeth” had to go on a four-week hiatus because of President Biden’s State of the Union Address and the NCAA March Madness tournament. CBS plans to re-air the pilot before “Elsbeth” returns with its second episode on April 4.

QIs it true that Eddie Van Halen’s son played guitar on the “Barbie” soundtrack? I thought I saw the name “Van Halen” in the credits.

— N.N.

AYes, Wolfgang Van Halen, son of the late “Van Halen” guitarist Eddie Van Halen, ended up on the “Barbie” soundtrack by chance, but also because of his talent. He met the movie’s music producer Mark Ronson while performing at the Taylor Hawkins’ tribute concert in 2022. The two became friends, and Ronson asked him if he’d collaborate on the fabulous composition titled “I’m Just Ken.” He even performed the song on stage alongside Ryan Gosling’s Ken at the Academy Awards this month, along with another great electric guitarist — Slash from Guns N’ Roses.

“I’m Just Ken” was not only nominated for an Oscar, but made it into the Top 5 of Billboard’s Hot Rock & Alternative Songs chart.

This memoir begins with a massive heart attack that leaves author Paul Scott in a vegetative state

with little possibility of recovery, according to his doctors. What they didn’t know about him was he neither counted anyone out nor anyone in, especially himself.

He lived his life overcoming multitudinous challenges living by the adage, “All I need is a tiny chance and I’ll make it work.” His story is delivered from a 5’4” frame being constantly told “you can’t, or you won’t.” He was a make-believe Christian with the gift of gab and full of crime. He refused to accept no, only the last yes.

His memoir addresses his upbringing as a Black Christian Scientist who chose the criminal path, yet no prison. This memoir shines a light on alcoholism, drug abuse, physical abuse, ever-present crime, and consistently circumventing all challenges.

GARDENING

Steps to Get Your Yard Ready for Spring

As the weather begins to warm and days get longer, it’s important to begin preparing your yard for a healthy growing season. While factors like climate, soil type and grass type can all impact how your yard grows, there are a few steps you can take during the spring months to help your lawn thrive.

From dethatching and aerating to fertilizing and mowing, tackling these simple chores can help ensure your yard looks its best and is prepared to fight off seasonal weeds, disease and drought.

Tune Your Mower

Before it’s time for the first mowing of the season, inspect your mower and perform any routine maintenance necessary. That goes beyond sharpening, or replacing, the blade, and includes changing the oil, spark plugs and filter as well as filling with a fresh tank of gas.

Loosen the Thatch Layer

While it’s important to avoid working on your lawn until after the final freeze to avoid damaging the grass, raking your yard with a spring tine rake to loosen thatch — the layer of leaves, roots and dead grass that builds up between live grass and soil — before the first mow is equally important. Be sure to rake when the soil is dry; if it’s too soft or muddy, you may pull up healthy grass crowns.

Combat Compacted Soil

If your soil has become compacted

— likely the effect of heavy foot traffic — and is too dense for water, air and other nutrients to reach the roots of your grass, aerating can help break it up and reduce thatch.

A core, or plug, aerator can introduce tiny holes into your soil by removing plugs of grass and soil, which lets nutrients more easily reach the roots. An added bonus, the plugs can decompose on top of your grass, supplying more nutrients.

Fill in Bare Spots

If your lawn is looking sparse, overseeding, which involves spreading grass seed over your existing lawn, can help fill in bare spots. Be sure to choose the right type of seed for your climate and soil type to ensure proper growth. Applying a slow-release nitrogen fertilizer at the same time can provide additional nutrients that are important for promoting healthy growth.

Start Seasonal Mowing

When the ground is dry enough and your grass is long enough to require cutting, begin seasonal mowing. Be sure to use proper techniques, including varying your mowing direction each time to avoid creating patterns or ruts, and avoid cutting grass too low, which can make the lawn more susceptible to weeds and drought stress. In general, never remove more than one-third of the grass blade at a time.

How to Green Your Home for Maximum Savings

Whether you own or rent the place you call home, ensuring that it’s energy efficient can help you save money, increase your comfort and contribute to improved indoor air quality. It’s also better for the planet.

To help you make choices that will trim your monthly expenses and reduce your carbon footprint, Freddie Mac is offering the following tips:

Home-Searching Tips

When house hunting, your realtor can help you learn about the current energy usage of the homes you’re interested in purchasing. If you’re explicitly looking for green housing, it’s helpful to work with a professional with specific expertise or credentials in this area.

Whether you’re in the market to buy or rent, basic energy- and water-saving features to check for when visiting properties include good insulation, properly sealed doors and windows, smart thermostats, lowflow or dual-flush toilets, high-efficiency or tankless hot water heaters, and front-loading washing machines.

The ENERGY STAR and WaterSense labels are good indicators that the property, and the appliances within it, are designed with efficiency in mind. You should also consider which direction the building faces and whether it’s shaded. The amount of direct sunlight your potential home receives can have a large impact on your HVAC needs.

Making Updates

There are many steps you can take to improve your home’s energy and water efficiency. If you’re unsure where to start, consider referencing the Department of Energy’s data-driven tools and calculators.

You could also hire a professional to perform an energy audit. This will pinpoint where you’re losing energy and what renovations will save you money.

Some quick DIY updates to make right now include caulking window casings, weatherstripping doors, replacing incandescent light bulbs with CFLs or LEDs, and installing lowflow faucets and showerheads.

Additional money-saving updates

include installing a smart, programmable thermostat, replacing older appliances and installing a tankless hot water heater.

Renting

Reach out to your landlord to determine what updates they’re willing to make. You may not be allowed to make permanent changes, or interested in making investments in someone else’s property, but energy-saving habits, such as washing clothes in cold water and adjusting the thermostat when leaving town, can help.

The Return

You may be asking yourself whether all this effort is worth it. The answer? Up-to-date, energy- and water-efficient technologies can save you 20% to 30% on your bills. And because today’s savvy buyers are looking for a home that will be kind to both their wallet and the environment, efficiency improvements can

also boost resale value. In fact, Freddie Mac research found that homes with high energy-efficiency ratings sold for 2.7% more on average than unrated homes.

Fortunately, there are programs available, such as Energy Efficient

Mortgages, to help finance these improvements upfront. With the understanding that reducing home utility costs places families in a better financial situation and helps preserve home affordability over time, Freddie Mac offers GreenCHOICE Mortgages that can be applied to a new home purchase or a no cash-out refinance and can be used to cover basic energy efficiency improvements up to $6,500 without the need for an energy report. With a GreenCHOICE Mortgage you can borrow up to 15% of the home’s “as complete” appraised value to pay for basic energy and water efficiency improvements. Speak with your lender about the financing options available to you and which may best suit your needs.

There are no doubt long-term savings and gains to be reaped from greening your home. And thanks to new programs, paying for these updates is easier for more American families. (SPT) 

Don’t Let These COPD Myths Hold You Back

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a lifelong chronic lung disease that makes it difficult to breathe, and is a leading cause of death and disability in the United States. According to experts, the more knowledge a patient with COPD has about the disease, the better off they will be.

A recent literature review from the American Lung Association found that patient education can help improve COPD self-management, provide skills for coping with related mental health challenges, improve overall health and quality of life, and may reduce hospital admissions.

This is especially important for those who have been living with the disease for a long time who may not be aware of recent treatment options and updated treatment guidelines, or who may not be inclined to recognize new or worsening symptoms and report them back to their healthcare provider.

To help people who have been living with the disease for 10 or more years live better, more active and enjoyable lives, the American Lung Association, with support from Sanofi and Regeneron, launched the new “COPD for Life” campaign. As part of the campaign, they are busting some common myths about the disease:

Myth COPD is a man’s disease.

Truth More women are living with COPD compared to men and deaths from COPD are higher in women than in men. Everyone with risk factors and those experiencing early warning signs, no matter their age or gender, should talk to their healthcare provider.

Myth There is no treatment for COPD.

Truth There is no cure for COPD, but treatment and management can help slow the progression of COPD and control symptoms, so a patient feels better and is able to spend more time doing what they enjoy.

Myth You cannot exercise if you have COPD.

Truth The right amount and type of exercise has many benefits and tips on how to get started should be discussed with your healthcare provider

Myth COPD only affects the lungs so what you eat does not matter.

Truth Most people are surprised to learn that the food they eat may affect their breathing. Talking to your healthcare provider about the right types of foods for you may help you breathe easier.

Myth If you already have COPD, quitting smoking won’t help.

Truth Quitting smoking is an important part of any COPD treatment plan. The chemicals in cigarettes, e-cigarettes and cigars can further damage lungs and may prevent medications from working as well as they could.

Myth A patient should manage COPD on their own.

Truth People who work closely with their healthcare providers to have a good treatment plan have better health outcomes. It’s especially important to see a healthcare provider if symptoms change or worsen. Likewise, supportive services, such as in-person or virtual support groups, can have a positive impact on health outcomes. Some studies indicate that positive social support is associated with reduced hospitalizations, fewer exacerbations, better health status and improved disease management behaviors.

To learn more, call the Lung HelpLine at (866) 252-2959 and be connected to a Lung Health navigator, or visit Lung.org/COPD or Lung.org/ Helpline for additional resources and to chat live with a licensed registered nurse or respiratory therapist.

Life with COPD can often be challenging. But having up-to-date knowledge and the right resources can help patients stay active, control their symptoms and know what to do if their COPD gets worse. (SPT)

READER LETTERS

Bad Words and Good Words

Recently following President Joe Biden’s description of an alleged murderer as being “illegal,” the left as they tend to do had an emotional breakdown over the use of the term. The preferred term for them is “undocumented” or “newcomer,” or even as Sen. Chris Murphy said, “undocumented American.”

It’s amazing how the left uses language to sanitize that which they want to normalize. The person who committed this heinous crime was in the country illegally and, most inconvenient to the left, had committed several crimes before allegedly murdering Laken Riley.

He committed crimes and he was let go because in today’s wacky world of leftism, we can’t even deport illegals who commit crime.

Conversely, the left has no problem calling me and half the country Nazis, homophobes, misogynists, terrorists and threats to democracy, whatever that means. When it comes to their fellow Americans, there is no attempt to sanitize their smears toward those of us who don’t believe or think as they do.

This shows where their allegiance is. Illegals breaking the law by unlawfully entering this country and in many cases committing even more crimes once they get here is a “good” thing for our nation.

People who think the mainstream policies of the left are insane and a precursor to the destruction of this country are called the worst names imaginable. And for the record, the left’s hyperbole is meaningless to us. The purpose of this letter is to highlight what they call non-American illegals versus their fellow Americans.

A Mindless Nation Cheers

Last year, my son-in-law graduated valedictorian of his police academy class, with a guaranteed job. Despite the physical danger, he was all-in. What caused him to walk away was the legal jeopardy and public disparagement.

In some very related news, a now bankrupt and divorced Derek Chauvin was stabbed 22 times in prison, doing a 21-year stretch for the drug-related death of George Floyd — because Chauvin used an otherwise non-lethal hold that he was instructed to use. And a mindless nation cheered his sentence.

As a result of Floyd’s death, that same nation rioted for months on end in 2020, claiming it supported Black lives. Black Lives Matter led the nation to defund the cops, institute cashless bail, and let prisoners out of jail.

BLM richly persists, and the mindless nation still follows.

ETHICALLY SPEAKING

Love Can Make Us Better

At some point, it was inevitable that I would opine about love. I must confess that the urge came up quite often, but I’ve always been able to stifle it. The problem is that love isn’t what it used to be. Sure, my generation still sings that “love makes the world go ’round,” “will keep us together,” and is even a “many splendored thing.” But the truth is love has fallen on tough times.

life. Somehow, parents knew it was necessary to train their children to enter society equipped with respect for others, which demanded civil discourse and the desire to be useful, hard-working, cooperative contributors to society. And good parents also taught their kids that not everyone would like them, or be nice to them. Yet, the proper response was courageous self-control that refused to engage in vengeful retaliation.

We could blame the decay of love on the generality of our English language. While it is common parlance to say I love the Dodgers, bowtie pasta, spectacular sunsets, my wife, and my grandchildren, each of them holds a differently nuanced space in my heart. Unfortunately, love as an emotion now occupies such a broad linguistic spectrum that it can no longer stand alone. Saying you “love” something or someone now demands further explanation so those listening can understand the level of attachment and commitment our “love” indicates.

Our society’s erosion of the commitments included in love isn’t helping the situation. With apologies to the Captain and Tennille (remember them?), love doesn’t seem to be keeping us together much anymore. Divorce continues to decimate marriages and families. And those who decide to live together without marrying fare much worse, according to multiple studies and reviews.

Love has also been kicked out of our political arena. Acrimony, mocking, mudslinging, mean-spirited name-calling, and bald-faced lies about one’s opponents were once considered bad form for those seeking political office. But once it became clear that large numbers of the voting public could be swayed by such tactics, winning ran roughshod over ethical behavior and civility. And the proof is all around us these days.

What we’re seeing today is the result of the slow but steady erosion of what used to be called the love of neighbor. By “neighbor,” we understood our fellow humans with whom we shared the path of

Because the concept of love today is watered down or left behind altogether, we must do whatever we can to resuscitate it. Why? Because love, that heart-filled commitment of acceptance, affection, provision and protection, is and always will be the strongest force in the universe. And it is essential that the most basic kind of love — civility and compassion for those around us — becomes more pronounced in the everyday rhythms of societal life.

Here’s why. When you experience authentic, life-making love, it knocks your socks off. You know what I’m talking about if you are blessed enough to be truly loved. Those of us who daily find a vacation spot in the heart of someone else, be it spouse, child, or friend, have found what makes life spectacular. Those who are loved — really, and deeply loved unconditionally — understand that he who has love and everything else really doesn’t have more than she who has love.

This column will end up shorter than usual by design. It isn’t because I’ve run out of things to say, but rather to challenge you to do something radical. Find someone you love, and tell them how much they add to your life daily. Find them, hug them, kiss them if appropriate, and thank God for reminding you of that wonderful, necessary and powerful sense of unconditional love. That’s it. The column is over, so put the paper down and get to it. Only love that is tended, nourished, exercised and expressed will really keep us together.
