First Gold was Discovered

Sutter’s Mill wasn’t until Jan. 24, 1848.

On the grounds of Placerita Canyon Natural Area and Nature Center is one of the Santa Clarita Valley’s most historic sites, the Oak of the Golden Dream.

This ancient gnarled coast live oak, which may be over 500 years old, is considered the site of the first documented discovery of gold in California.

Despite the common misconception that gold was first discovered in California at Sutter’s Mill in Northern California on Jan. 24, 1848 when James W. Marshall discovered gold on the property of Johann A. Sutter, historical records reveal Francisco Lopez made the “first” historic discovery of California gold in what is now Placerita Canyon.

The gold found in the SCV is called “placer gold,” a term used for gold that has eroded from hard rock veins and washed down a creek/riverbed, broken up and is often just small grains or dust.

The name Placerita Canyon is derived from the term “placer.”

The Golden Discovery

Ron Kraus, a docent at the Placerita Canyon Nature Center, said the oft-told tale of how gold was discovered in the SCV is a “charming” story.

“Did Betsy Ross really sew the first American flag? Did George Washington really chop down a cherry tree? The story of how Lopez found the gold has been told for generations. It’s a legend, a story, but the facts are that gold was discovered in Placerita Canyon in 1842 and there is documentation,” he said.

There are many variations to the story of when and how Lopez discovered gold.

The most common version of

the tale recounts that one day when Lopez was rounding up stray horses (or was it cows and sheep?) he stopped in what was then known as San Feliciano Canyon to take an afternoon siesta.

After eating lunch (or not) he rested under an oak tree and had a dream he was floating in a pool of gold.

When he awakens, he sees a wild onion growing in the dirt along the nearby creek. He takes out a knife and pulls the onion out of the ground. (Or did he gather the wild onions to bring back to the hacienda kitchen at the request of his wife?) Clinging to the roots of the onion are small nuggets of gold. (Or was the gold discovered in the kitchen after he had brought the onions home?)

Lopez then took the gold to Los Angeles to assay.

Did he pull the onion from under the tree or alongside the creek? Was he hungry when he awoke from his dream? Did he want the onion to add to his lunch meal? The exact truth of the story is lost to time, but whatever the real story might have been the discovery was made at least six years before the discovery of gold at Sutter’s Mill.

According to family lore Lopez was a trained mineralogist who had studied mining and French at university in Sonora, Mexico.

Was the discovery merely a fortuitous accident, or was Lopez actively searching for gold after learning of possible earlier discoveries in the area?

SCV Mini Gold Rush

Word of the discovery triggered a small gold rush in Placerita Canyon. Kraus said Lopez benefited greatly from the discovery, charging miners for the privilege of looking for gold on the land.

out the SCV and the San Gabriel Mountains until the beginning of WWII.

Kraus said gold seekers still comb the riverbanks of the Santa Clara River in the SCV after rainstorms looking for gold that may have washed down from the mountains.

“It is against state law to prospect for gold in Placerita Canyon State Park Natural Area,” he said.

Google It

If you Google “Where was gold first discovered in California” the first few answers refer to Sutter’s Mill. However, the third listing “The real story of California’s first gold discovery” under a link to SCV History in Pictures is penned by SCV historian Leon Worden and confirms the documented reports of Lopez’s Placerita Canyon gold discovery.

Of more interest is Worden’s update to the article that includes information indicating gold may have been discovered near Castaic in 1820 or earlier.

Read the article at scvhistory.com/ scvhistory/signal/worden/lw012496.htm

Kraus said one reason the SCV gold discovery may not have received the attention it deserved was because in 1842 California was still in the hands of Mexico. It was not until the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo of 1848 that California became a part of the United States. California became a state Sept 9, 1950.

The 1848 Sutter’s Mill discovery was reported extensively in newspapers on the East Coast after California was official part of the U.S. and where it captured the imagination of fortune seekers.

Oak of the Golden Dream Dedication

Is it really the same tree that Lopez napped under and dreamed of gold?

We will never know. The Oak of the Golden Dream was dedicated on March 9, 1930, 88 years after Lopez first discovered gold.

Adolfo G. Rivera, described as a “historical society leader” determined the tree that would hence be known as “The Oak of the Golden Dream.”

He made that judgment based on the memories of a Lopez descendant.

A description of the dedication ceremony

from correspondence among the event organizers reads:

A description of the dedication ceremony from correspondence among the event organizers reads:

“The Historical-landmarks committee of Ramona Parlor 109, Native Sons of the Golden West, the Kiwanis Club and Chamber of Commerce of Newhall-Saugus, and La Mesa Club, will unveil a temporary tablet, over a mound of granite boulders unearthed in Placeritos canyon by Mr. F.E. Walker, after being covered by brush and debris for 75 years, marking the spot where gold was first discovered in California on March 9th, 1842, by Francisco Lopez, a native Californian.”Lopez, a native Californian.”

The Oak Today

Kraus said the oak is still thriving despite concerns for its age.

“The county has put in a fence around the tree that keeps people from walking on its root system which is harmful to oaks,” he said. The Oak of the Golden Dream was registered as a state historical landmark on March 6, 1935.

This year marks the 182nd anniversary of the first “documented” discovery of gold in the SCV.

Saving Money on Heating and Air Conditioning

HVAC systems not only enhance home comfort but, when operating efficiently, can also contribute to cost savings. As colder temperatures is sweeping the country, many homeowners are wondering how to best use their HVAC system to avoid costly heating bills. Similarly, these tips apply to warmer temperatures and savings on cooling bills.

Here are five strategic ways in which a home’s heating and air conditioning system can optimize the climate and serve as a savvy tool for trimming down home expenses.

From smart usage practices to regular maintenance tips, these insights can help any homeowner’s HVAC system to last for years to come and provide additional comfort and savings.

Maximizing the efficiency of a home’s current system is key to ensuring it works optimally over the years while continuing to provide utility bill savings due to efficiencies.

Consider implementing the following strategies to minimize expenses with an existing HVAC system:

Enhance Weather Resistance

The operational dynamics of an HVAC system are significantly influenced by how well the home functions. A well-functioning home correlates with an efficiently operating HVAC system. Weatherizing the home not only amplifies its overall effectiveness but also elevates comfort levels while reducing energy expenses.

Weatherization entails sealing all windows, doors, attics and basements to thwart heat loss. If the home has an older duct system, consider sealing it to prevent conditioned air leakage into unconditioned spaces, potentially leading to prolonged HVAC system operation.

In regions with hot or warmer climates, installing blinds or solar shades can effectively mitigate the entry of the sun’s heat, minimizing the reliance on air conditioning.

Regulate Humidity Levels

Effectively managing the humidity within the home contributes to maintaining optimal comfort and reducing costs. During the winter, introducing humidity into the living space prevents dryness and also enhances comfort at lower temperatures.

In the summer, maintaining lower humidity levels promotes comfort even at higher indoor temperatures.

In both scenarios, controlling home humidity lessens the operational duration of the HVAC system required to sustain a comfortable environment.

Get Smart About the Thermostat

Take charge of temperature settings to suit your preferences, whether at home or away. Use solutions such as Rheem®’s EcoNet® Smart Thermostat that enable seamless temperature adjustments from any location. Leveraging geofencing technology, EcoNet intelligently detects the homeowners’ presence, adjusting the heating or cooling settings to maximize energy efficiency based on whether they are home or away.

It is good practice to routinely have your air conditioning system inspected.

Implement Energy-Efficient Practices

Incorporate energy-conscious practices as part of a daily routine to optimize the efficiency of your HVAC system and achieve substantial long-term savings on home energy bills.

Begin by ensuring that doors and windows are closed when the HVAC system is in operation, preventing the unnecessary loss of conditioned air and ensuring that the home maintains a consistent and comfortable temperature. Use ceiling fans strategically to enhance air circulation, promoting even distribution throughout the living space. These straightforward yet impactful habits collectively contribute to heightened energy efficiency, translating into tangible and lasting reductions in overall energy expenses.

Keep Current With Routine Maintenance Inspections

Scheduled service checks guarantee the optimal and efficient operation of any HVAC system, simultaneously averting potential major issues that could jeopardize both efficiency and the overall health of the system. It is advisable to conduct maintenance checks at least bi-annually, ideally before the onset of significant heating and cooling seasons during the winter and summer.

Looking to do a complete overhaul and in search of an energy-efficient HVAC system but unsure where to begin? Explore leading HVACR manufacturer, Rheem’s Sustainability Standouts for a comprehensive lineup of efficient solutions designed to ensure a comfortable home and efficiencies that provide long-term budget savings. Give Comfort Food Classics a Mexican Twist

If winter evenings have you stuck in a dinner rut, heat up the kitchen with family favorites everyone can look forward to. Shaking off the chill can start with a cozy blanket and comforting food that warms you from the inside out.

Soup is a wintertime staple thanks to its simplicity, and you can put a delicious spin on your next winter warmup with Mexican-inspired ingredients. Giving soup night a twist starts with Cacique Foods, one of the country's top authentic Mexican food brands, that invites friends and family to share real moments while savoring authentic flavors.

This Smoky Chorizo and Chicken Pozole relies on the bold, hearty, spicy taste of Cacique's Pork Chorizo combined with handcrafted Homestyle Salsa. Queso Fresco's crumbly, creamy texture and milky, fresh flavor adds the perfect finishing touch, making this soup a perfect way to warm up weeknights with just the right amount of heat.

For a flavorful side that complements a variety of main courses while adding Mexican flair, consider Mexican Loaded Mashed Potatoes. This recipe is a familiar favorite with the unique twist of bacon and Pork Chorizo for a meat-infused recipe that will become a menu mainstay.

Plus, for an extra creamy texture, it calls for Cacique Crema Mexicana — an everyday table cream with a neutral, fresh-tasting flavor ideal for balancing out spice — and Oaxaca, a semisoft cheese with a mellow, buttery flavor.

‘The Story of Sin City’ is Full of History and Anecdotes

‘Vegas: The Story Of Sin City’  (out of four) Sundays on CNN.

In 2003, the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority debuted one of the most memorable and successful taglines of the 21st century: “What Happens in Vegas, Stays in Vegas.” Even if you’ve never been to Vegas, you’ve probably heard that line or uttered some variation of it.

a t e : d e l i v e r y d a t e :

It’s a great slogan, but of course it’s utterly untrue. What Happens in Vegas shows up on your credit card statement the following month. What Happens in Vegas can result in feelings of remorse and guilt — can produce some of the best memories of your life. shows such as “Vega$” (1978-1981), “Las Vegas” (2003-2008) and the Max series “Hacks,” as well as classic films such as “Casino” and “Leaving Las Vegas” and “Ocean’s Eleven.”

Now you can add to that list the engaging and informative and wellpaced CNN four-part documentary

“Vegas: The Story of Sin City.” Even if you’ve been to Vegas a few times and you’re familiar with the city’s unique history, every episode offers a bounty of fascinating anecdotal information, to wit:

Everyone knows about those quickie and often gimmicky weddings you can get in Vegas, but as far back as the 1930s, you could file for divorce after just six weeks of residency in Nevada. Along with the legalization of gambling, Las Vegas became the goto place for quickie divorces — and blowing off a little steam at the slots and tables.

years, and interviews with journalists, historians, former showgirls and lounge acts, as well as Vegas fixtures Rich Little, Paul Anka and Wayne Newton, “Vegas: The Story of Sin City” follows a straightforward timeline.

The debut episode, titled “From Sand to Strip,” provides a brief but informative history lesson and takes us through the early involvement of the mob in building the city, with Meyer Lansky and Bugsy Siegel leading the way. We see the emergence of the Rat Pack — and the racism and segregation that permeated the casinos, despite the popularity of Black entertainers such as Nat King Cole and Sammy Davis Jr. and Lena Horne.

Episode 2, “The Golden Age,” chronicles how Vegas initially struggled to keep up with the times in the 1960s, but eventually shifted its focus to attracting younger crowds with headliners such as Tom Jones and Ann-Margret and more erotic showgirl acts while integrating the casinos, including the addition of front-ofhouse minority employees as blackjack dealers, bartenders and cocktail waitresses.

Elvis Presley’s residency at the International/Hilton Hotel in Las Vegas from 1969 to 1976 is the stuff of legend — but it wasn’t the first time Presley played Vegas. In 1956, the 21-year-old Elvis had a two-week run at the New Frontier, but the traditional, old-school Vegas audience (not to mention critics) weren’t quite ready for the raucous sounds of “Heartbreak Hotel.” We catch a glimpse of a brief newspaper article with the headline, “Hillbilly on a Pedestal.”

The reclusive billionaire Howard Hughes arrived at the Desert Inn for the holidays in 1966, renting the top two floors. When management asked Hughes to leave in late December so they could make room for the New Year’s Eve high rollers, Hughes simply bought up the place and stayed put for four years.

Romance Scams on the Rise with Seniors

They say, “you can’t buy love,” but scammers have figured out a way to exploit it for profit.

Romance scams are at an all-time high and, while victims cross all demographics, the Federal Trade Commission reports that elders are increasingly targeted. Why? Because they often have retirement savings at their disposal, may be more be isolated and less tech savvy.

“Romance scammers often manipulate emotions to gain trust,” says Mark Kwapiszeski, PNC’s head of enterprise fraud. “Those who fall victim end up putting feelings above logic. This can create embarrassment and, as a result, these crimes are less likely to be reported.”

Scammers will create convincing profiles on dating and social media apps, reaching out to their target feigning familiarity or attraction. Things move quickly, but there is always a reason they can’t meet on video or in person. They may claim to have a reason that requires them to be overseas or out of reach. They tell their target everything they want to hear, and the hook is set.

Suddenly, a crisis arises that they insist they need help financial help with to mitigate. Or maybe they need finances to set up a new life together. They ask for the money, but would prefer it be sent in a form like cryptocurrency or gift card where there is little chance of the victim ever recovering it.

Such scams are highly effective. In 2022 alone, romance scams resulted in $1.3 billion lost, more than double the money lost in the previous year, according to the FTC.

To add insult to injury, scammers may convince their target to send them revealing photos they will later use to extort them. They may even play the long game and build trust over time, then convince their target to invest with them, without the victim ever getting any return.

“A romance scammer can invest a long time in cultivating trust, which makes these scams particularly nefarious,” Kwapiszeski says.

To protect against potential romance scams, follow these tips:

• Before sending money or sharing financial information, consult a friend or family member. Simply talking to someone not involved in the situation is often enough to identify red flags.

• Trust your gut. If something seems too good to be true, it probably is.

• Beware of “love bombing,” when a person lavishes you with excessive flattery, affection and praise early in the relationship to manipulate your emotions.

• Be wary of strangers reaching out on social media.

• If you like someone, ask for a quick video chat. If they refuse or make up outlandish excuses, that’s a red flag.

• Stay alert to photos or biographical details that don’t match up with what someone’s told you.

• Use image and name-reverse searches to validate the identity of people you meet online.

• Never send intimate photos to strangers or invest without doing your due diligence.

• Confide in family and friends if you grow suspicious.

Elders have lost homes, emptied out retirement accounts and risked lifetime savings for a love interest that never truly existed. Once the shock and money is gone, the shame sets in and some have even resorted to selfharm instead of admitting to being defrauded in this way. If a loved one falls victim to a romance scam, it’s important to respond with empathy.

If you believe you or someone you love has been a victim of fraud, PNC Bank’s web resources, as part of its Security and Privacy Center (pnc. com), can help. After taking immediate measures to protect yourself, block the scammer on all accounts, change your passwords, and report the incident to the FTC and FBI.

The best line of defense against romance scams is awareness. Understanding common tactics can help you stay protected. (SPT) 

QIs it true that Sam Waterston is leaving “Law & Order”? Who is going to replace him?

— K.J.

A”Law & Order” was resurrected in February 2022 after an 11-year hiatus. It spawned several successful spin-offs, including “Law & Order: SVU,” which has surpassed the original “L&O” in terms of seasons. While he wasn’t an original cast member, Sam Waterston left a prestigious film career to play District Attorney Jack McCoy, starting with the show’s fifth season. He rejoined the show at the age of 81 when it returned two years ago.

He’s since made the decision to exit once again. However, he doesn’t

appear to be retiring as he recently stated, “There’s sadness in leaving, but I’m just too curious about what’s next.” Tony Goldwyn (“Scandal”) has been cast as the new DA.

QWho are the new coaches I saw on a commercial for “The Voice”? I don’t recognize them. Also, have there been any winners of “The Voice” who have had successful careers on par with “American Idol” winners like Carrie Underwood and Kelly Clarkson?

— H.A.

AThe 25th season of the singing competition show “The Voice” premiered on NBC in February with returning judges John Legend, Reba McEntire and Chance the Rapper. Joining them this season is the Grammy-winning country/pop duo Dan + Shay, who met when they moved to Nashville, Tennessee, separately.

Dan + Shay hit it big in 2018 with their single “Tequila” and followed that with the crossover hit song “10,000 Hours,” which they recorded with Justin Bieber. The twosome actually isn’t new to “The Voice” — they appeared in season 20 as “battle advisors” for former judge Blake Shelton.

In terms of Billboard rankings, the most successful winners from “The Voice” include Cassadee Pope from season three. She climbed to the topfive spot of the country music chart with the song “Wasting All These Tears.” According to TVLine, she’s since left the genre to return to her pop-punk roots.

Season nine’s Jordan Smith had the most successful debut album of the winners so far and also found success

as a songwriter. He penned “Ashes” for the “Deadpool 2” soundtrack, which was recorded by none other than Celine Dion. Last season’s winner who goes by one name — Huntley — has yet to release a single, but he did sing the National Anthem at an NFL game.

QWhen are the Oscars this year?

I remember when they used to be in February, but they seem to have been pushed back later and later.

AThe 96th(!) Annual Academy Awards will air live on ABC on Sunday, March 10. Jimmy Kimmel will host the ceremony for the second year in a row, and it’ll begin an hour earlier than in past years (7 p.m. ET instead of 8 p.m.). There will also be a 30-minute live pre-show on the red carpet.

The earlier time slot is an attempt to boost ratings. With the ceremony expected to end by 10:30 p.m., the network is hoping viewers will stick it out instead of turning off their TVs and other devices before it concludes. 

The Basics of Home Inspections When Purchasing

The process of buying a home involves a number of variables that present at various times throughout buyers’ search for a home. For instance, real estate professionals typically advise buyers to receive a mortgage preapproval prior to beginning their search for a new home. Once such preliminary measures have been taken care of, buyers can then search for a home and ultimately make an offer.

One of the more critical steps buyers can take when making an offer is insisting that the offer is contingent upon a home inspection. Home inspections offer a measure of protection that can save buyers from investing in properties that may look nice to the naked eye, but feature a host of costly problems beneath the surface. Individuals new to home buying may not know what to expect of the inspection process. In such instances, the following rundown can shed light on home inspections. Inspections may be mandatory Though it’s not always the case, home inspections may be required by mortgage lenders. Lenders want to ensure borrowers can repay their loans, which might prove difficult if a home is in need of considerable repairs. That’s why home inspections tend to be mandated by lenders, even if they’re paid for by buy-

ers. Estimates from HomeAdvisor indicate home inspections cost between $279 and $400 on average, but that cost is well worth the peace of mind of knowing you won’t unknowingly be buying a money pit.

You choose your inspector Buyers will choose their own home inspector, so it can pay dividends to start asking people you trust for recommendations even before you begin searching for a new home. Realtors also may recommend inspectors they’ve worked with in the past. The International Association of Certified Home Inspectors® (nachi. org) also can help buyers find a home inspector. You can, and should, attend the inspection It’s

wise for buyers to attend a home inspection. Doing so allows them to see potential issues firsthand. Some seasoned home inspectors even prefer clients to attend an inspection so they can point out issues as they go through the house and answer questions in person. For buyers, this can be a great way to become more informed about the home inspection process.

Expect to spend a good deal of time at the inspection, and not necessarily with the sellers present The National Association of Realtors indicates inspections can take as long as three hours, so this won’t be an in-and-out excursion. Buyers don’t want to rush the process, so block out ample time on your schedule to attend the inspection. In addition, sellers typically are not home during an inspection, though it can happen. Buyers who don’t want sellers present can request that they are not on the premises while the inspection takes place. There may not be anything to compel sellers to be off-site, but it can’t hurt to ask.

Home inspections are a vital component of the home buying process. It’s imperative that buyers take inspections seriously so they can feel confident they are not investing in a flawed property. (MC) 

GARDEN BACKYARD

Create Beautiful, Inviting Outdoor Spaces

With all the beauty Mother Nature has to offer, a few pops of color or other simple embellishments can help make your yard look superb from the curb.

Whether you’re looking to enhance your front yard, backyard, porch or patio space, consider these easy and affordable ways to spruce up your outdoor oasis:

Add Mirrors

Just as they do indoors, mirrors can open up small patio spaces and make areas feel larger. Use mirrors made with resin or other waterproof materials so they won’t be compromised when exposed to the elements.

Make Bold Statements

Plant your favorite flowers in a giant, bright red or yellow pot or hang a bright colored swing from a tree. Just a little dab of color can make a statement and brighten the whole space.

Hang It Up

Place hanging baskets around the porch to bring punches of color to your outdoor sanctuary. With the freedom to pick and choose your favorite plants and flowers, these baskets have the added benefit of easy maintenance.

Planting Considerations

If you wish to add color to your

landscape, consider the time of day you normally spend in your outdoor space. Early risers may appreciate vibrantly colored foliage that perks with the morning sun. Those who spend time outdoors in the evening hours can incorporate white or lightly colored plants that take on a silvery sheen in the moonlight.

Tie Up a Hammock

Make a relaxing retreat in the comfort of your own yard by hanging a hammock from trees or between posts on your deck.

Add a Birdbath

These garden favorites come in a variety of styles and colors to fit your

unique tastes and budget. Birds of all kinds can find an oasis in their new bath and provide you with a beautiful view.

Throw Some Pillows

Outdoor pillows are often available in the same fun designs of their indoor counterparts. Add some throw pillows to your outdoor furniture for a chic yet comfortable update. These subtle changes can help beautify your outdoor spaces and cause onlookers to do a double-takefor the right reasons. Find more ideas at eLivingtoday.com. (Family Features) 

Bringing the Indoors to the Outdoors

Outdoor living is wildly popular, as more and more homeowners are bringing elements once reserved for home interiors into their backyards.

When designing outdoor living

spaces, homeowners may learn about biophilic design, an architectural concept that aims to incorporate natural elements into outdoor living spaces. Proponents of biophilic design say it satisfies an innate human need to affiliate with nature, thereby helping to reduce stress that people may experience after being stuck indoors for much of their days.

Biophilic design is often part of a home interior design, but many homeowners also embrace it when designing their outdoor living spaces. For example, surrounding outdoor living areas with noninvasive plants, flowers and trees and using natural materials like wood and stone when building such spaces are great ways to embrace biophilic design and create a tension-free ambiance in outdoor living spaces. How to Get Free Updated COVID Vaccines

While COVID-19 activity is still below the levels seen last year at this time, COVID-19 hospitalizations are rising quickly. There is still time to get yourself and your loved ones vaccinated. Getting an updated COVID-19 vaccine is the best way to stay protected against serious illness from COVID-19. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that everyone 6 months and older stay up to date with the vaccination. Vaccination also lowers your risk of getting long COVID — a wide range of health problems that can last weeks, months or even years after infection.

Most adults can get a free updated vaccine through their private health insurance, Medicare or Medicaid plans. However, some health insurance plans don’t fully cover the cost of a COVID-19 vaccine, and an estimated 25-30 million people living in the U.S. don’t have health insurance.

To address this concern, CDC’s Bridge Access Program is offering adults who are uninsured or whose insurance doesn’t fully cover COVID-19 vaccination a free, updated vaccine.

This program will end by Dec. 31, 2024. To date, more than a million COVID-19 vaccine doses have been provided through the program.

Bridge Access Program

There is no enrollment process or

application to qualify, and you don’t need to provide identification or proof of insurance to get a vaccine through the Bridge Access Program.

If you are 18 years or older and don’t have health insurance, or your plan doesn’t fully cover an updated COVID-19 vaccine, the Bridge Access Program can provide one for free at participating CVS, Walgreens and eTrueNorth-partnering pharmacies, local health centers and health providers.

Follow these steps to find pharmacies and health care providers participating in the Bridge Access Program near you:

• Visit Vaccines.gov.

• Select “Find COVID-19 Vaccines.”

• Enter your 5-digit ZIP code in the search bar and select which vaccine option(s) you’re interested in finding.

The Importance of Annual Flu Vaccines

Annual flu shots may not be a tradition many people look forward to, but such vaccinations are highly effective at reducing the risk of influenza-related illness. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that recent studies have indicated flu shots reduce the risk of flu-related illness by as much as 60%. In fact, the CDC estimates that flu vaccinations during the 201920 flu season prevented roughly 7.5 million flu illnesses and more than 100,000 influenza-associated hospitalizations. (MC) 

• Select “Search for COVID-19 Vaccines.”

• Select the option “Bridge Access Program Participant” to show participating providers and pharmacies.

When you find a convenient location, call ahead to confirm that they can provide you with a free updated COVID-19 vaccine through the Bridge Access Program. If you can’t find a participating pharmacy or

provider near you, check back later because new locations are still being added.

Why get vaccinated now?

Viruses constantly change through mutation and sometimes these mutations result in a new strain (or variant) of the virus. It’s important to know that the updated COVID-19 vaccines offer protection against the variants spreading throughout our communities right now.

This time of year people spend more time in crowded indoor settings, where respiratory viruses may be more readily transmitted. Getting an updated vaccine will help protect you from serious illness.

Don’t let cost stop you from getting an updated COVID-19 vaccine this year. Free COVID-19 vaccines are still available. If you are uninsured or your plan won’t fully cover it, visit Vaccines.gov today to find a Bridge Access Program provider near you. (BPT) 

How To Wisely Manage Your Finances

Many paths lead to long-term financial security. A commitment to saving money, skillful investing and living within one’s means are just some of the ways people can set themselves on the path toward a comfortable and secure financial future. Avoiding debt, particularly consumer debt, is another pathway to long-term financial stability.

Unlike other forms of debt like a mortgage or an auto loan, consumer debt is typically accompanied by high interest rates.

For example, the LendingTree reports that the average credit card APR for individuals with good credit is just over 21%, while those with poor credit can expect to get an APR closer to 28%.

Those figures underscore the importance of using credit wisely, as poor use of credit can quickly land consumers in considerable debt. With that in mind, consumers can consider these tips to manage credit wisely.

See Credit Rating as a Tool

See credit as a tool to build your financial reputation. Credit cards have something of a bad reputation, as they’re often noted when discussing the dangers of debt. However, that narrative is different for millions of consumers who have figured out that wise credit usage is a highly effective way to build a strong financial reputation.

In fact, the LendingTree notes that using credit cards responsibly is one of the most effective ways to build a strong credit history. Paying credit card

bills on time; paying balances in full each month, and thus avoiding costly interest charges; and spending only a small percentage of your credit limit are all hallmarks of wise credit usage.

The longer consumers adhere to this strategy, the higher their credit score becomes and the stronger their financial reputation becomes as well.

Avoid Too Many Credit Cards

Avoid opening too many credit card accounts.

The credit reporting agency Equifax notes that two to three credit card accounts is enough to maintain a good credit score. Lenders want prospective borrowers to have a credit history that reflects their ability to successfully manage a wide variety of types of credit, so limiting consumer credit to two to three cards will ensure you are not putting all of your eggs in one basket.

Unfortunately, many consumers have not followed this line of thinking, as a recent report from the credit monitoring agency Experian indicated the average consumer has 3.84 credit cards.

Low Credit Use Ratio

Maintain a low utilization ratio. Credit utilization ratio (CUR) refers to the percentage of credit currently in use. If your available credit is $2,000 and your balance is $1,000, your CUR is 50%, which lenders would undoubtedly view as excessive.

Experian notes that conventional wisdom governing CUR is to keep it below 30%, though that has shifted in recent years. Nowadays, a CUR closer to 10% may paint consumers in an especially positive light.

Recognition of CUR and what qualifies as a consumer-friendly CUR can motivate consumers to stay out of debt and avoid overspending.

Using credit wisely can benefit consumers in the short- and long-term. (MC) 

The Basic Fundamentals of Financial Literacy

The ripple effects of the COVID pandemic showed how fragile economies can be and gave millions of people the impression that their financial well-being may not be as controllable as they imagined it was prior to 2020.

Personal finances are indeed vulnerable to forces that shape both local and global economies, but individuals are not helpless against such variables.

Financial literacy is a term that can be defined is various ways, but is perhaps most usefully characterized as an individual’s ability to use various financial skills. Budgeting, investing and sound borrowing strategies each fall under the umbrella of financial literacy, and understanding how can help people better prepare for what’s to come.

Budgeting

Budgeting is one of the founda-

tions of financial literacy and its value is not unrecognized. According to a 2023 survey from NerdWallet conducted by The Harris Poll, 74% of the more than 2,000 adults surveyed indicated they have a monthly budget.

However, 84% of survey respondents who have a budget admitted they exceed it. This area of financial literacy is most useful when individuals not only recognize the need to budget, but also the benefits of living within a budget once it’s established.

Investing

One of the more notable lessons of the pandemic is just how quickly inflation can affect cost of living and quality of life.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the cost of store-bought food increased by 23.5% between February 2020 and May 2023. While that was an extraordinarily high increase for such a short period of time,

inflation affects the value of a dollar, and financially literate individuals recognize that a dollar saved today will be less valuable 20 years from now. Investing helps individuals grow their money so they can meet all of their future expenses. NerdWallet notes the average stock market return is about 10% per year (though that, too, is vulnerable to inflation), which shows just how vital sound investing is to securing your financial future.

Borrowing

Borrowing money is not bad, even though it’s often discussed through the lens of credit card debt. Credit card debt is a significant issue, as data from the Federal Reserve indicated Americans’ total credit card balance exceeded $1 trillion in the third quarter of 2023. But borrowing to buy consumer goods and borrowing to finance an education or home purchase are two wildly different things. Nu-

merous studies have shown that lifetime earnings are significantly higher among college-educated adults than individuals whose formal education ended with high school.

In addition, the S&P CoreLogic Case-Shiller U.S. National Home Price Index indicates the historical annual average national home appreciation rate was 4.8% between 1987 and July 2023.

In relation to financial literacy, borrowing to fund an education and/ or purchase a home is a far more effective long-term financial strategy than borrowing to purchase consumer goods.

Financial literacy can help individuals lay a sound financial foundation that can make them less vulnerable to unforeseen variables that threaten the stability of local and global economies.

New Parvo Treatment to Revolutionize Puppy Care

While getting a new pet can be one of life’s biggest joys, research shows only 44% of dog owners know about a common fatal disease, putting pups at risk, according to a Elanco Market Research. Parvovirus is one of the deadliest and most contagious viruses that affects more than 900 dogs per day in the U.S. — many of which are puppies, says Elanco.

If left untreated, parvo has a mortality rate of up to 91%. Parvo spreads by direct dog-to-dog contact as well as contact with contaminated feces, environments, or people.

In July 2023, an eight-week-old Pitbull mix, named Cookie, helped make canine health history. Weighing only 4.5 pounds, and not yet vaccinated, Cookie arrived at a parvo treatment facility with

vomiting, diarrhea, and dehydration — all symptoms typical of a positive parvo diagnosis. After a parvo test, Cookie was confirmed positive for the

fatal virus.

Cookie was treated with Canine Parvovirus Monoclonal Antibody, a breakthrough conditionally approved treatment by Elanco Animal Health. The treatment is a single-dose IV to deliver antibodies that travel through the dog’s body to attack the virus — stopping it from infecting new cells. Cookie continued receiving care from staff and was reunited with her owner four days later, happy and healthy.

Elanco’s Canine Parvovirus Monoclonal Antibody has since saved the lives of pups across the country and enabled dogs to go home sooner, revolutionizing the parvo treatment protocol as we know it. For more information on Elanco’s Canine Parvovirus Monoclonal Antibody, visit fightparvo. com. (BPT) 

Tips to Keep Your Dogs and Cats a Healthy Weight

Much like humans, dogs and cats can struggle with aging- and weight-related health issues. In fact, three out of five cats and dogs are overweight or obese, according to Packaged Facts’ U.S. Pet Market Outlook.

Pet obesity can lead to several health issues and problems, including diabetes, cancer and osteoarthritis, according to research published in Veterinary Medicine.

While leading a sedentary lifestyle and overfeeding are common factors that can lead to pets becoming overweight or obese, these simple tips from the pet food experts at Go! Solutions can help you manage your dog’s or cat’s weight to ensure he or she lives a happy and healthy life.

Exercise and Play Regularly

Just as important as your pet’s diet is ensuring he or she is active. For dogs, regular walks and hikes are a simple way to provide mental stimulation, improve muscle tone, increase metabolism and help reduce boredom while also getting necessary exercise.

For high-energy dogs who need more stimulation, games like fetch, hide-and-seek and tug can help them burn off extra energy and tire more quickly on days when you don’t have time to spend hours outside with them.

For cats, consider scratching posts,

flirt poles, obstacle courses, setting platforms at multiple levels and simple toys like balls and fake mice to keep them active and engaged.

Address Dietary Needs

Diet is a major factor in weight management for dogs and cats. The ideal diet for your pet provides the right balance of macro- and micronutrients, including protein, fat, carbohydrates, fiber, vitamins and minerals as well as the proper portion size to help prevent obesity. Formulated by Petcurean’s expert nutrition team, Go! Solutions Weight Management + Joint Care Grain-Free Chicken recipe provides complete and balanced nutrition featuring premium quality, functional ingredients with zero by-product meals and artificial preservatives.

To support a healthy weight and mobile joints in adult and senior dogs and cats, the formula includes L-carnitine to help burn fat into energy and fiber-rich psyllium husk to help keep pets feeling full.

Glucosamine and chondroitin in the recipe for dogs and chondroitin from chicken cartilage in the recipe for cats helps support healthy joints and good mobility.

Keep Treats in Check

An important part of weight loss and management is limiting the additional calories you’re providing your pet outside of his or her normal dayto-day diet.

A little extra can go a long way, so

keep packaged treats to a minimum and be mindful of things like slipping your pet table scraps or letting him or her lick out the almost-empty peanut butter jar. Keeping those additional calories in check can help keep your

pet’s diet — and overall health — on the right track.

ETHICALLY SPEAKING

Clean up the Disaster

Americans deserve to know who is running the executive branch of our country. We surely know who is not. Joe Biden is not capable, physically or mentally. Those who control Biden and the administration are determined to “fundamentally transform America,” which is the leftist promise going back to the 2008 presidential campaign. It’s the same people running Washington with the same anti-American, subversive agenda.

Under the Democrat administration our border is wide open, inviting millions of illegal migrants from all over the world to infiltrate our country. We don’t know who they are, where they’re coming from, what they’re bringing or what their intentions are. What better way to “fundamentally transform” our culture and society! Not to mention the political upheaval that is occurring.

The Department of Homeland Security does nothing to prevent this appalling crisis. The Department of Justice has allowed this lawlessness to go on with impunity. The bureaucrats who lead these departments are incompetent, complicit or both. It is these unelected government employees, and some former leaders, who are calling the shots while our representatives in Congress do little or nothing.

This election year we have an opportunity to start a recovery. Let’s do our part by voting the lawless Democrats out so new leaders can clean up the disaster in Washington.

Fear and Other F-Words

Stephen Maseda (letters, Jan. 3) took nine paragraphs to say what I said in just two sentences (Jan. 13), but there is one fallacy in Mr. Maseda’s argument. Although religions don’t use “force” to control their followers (at least not anymore) they do use another “F-word,” and that is “fear.” Still, one is always “free” to simply walk away. I’ve seen fans of Star Wars get into fights over what is considered “canon” and what is “heresy” in the fictional universe George Lucas created. Maybe Lucas can start his own religion. I am certain he would attract droves of devout followers.

Truth or Consequences?

Every day, as I drive down the hill from home to the busy avenue that takes me to my study at Grace Baptist Church, I come to a four-way stop. You know, an intersection where all four lanes converge at right angles due to the presence of four STOP signs. When I leave for work early in the morning, I’m usually the only one at that corner and have no trouble turning and going on my way. But, if I reach the corner when most of my neighbors are starting their commute, it can be much different. Of course, if we all play by the rules, things will go smoothly. We’ll wait our turn and travel on without anger or incident.

fact that people are losing their jobs and reputations for “misgendering” others by using what are the proper pronouns.

In the past, when I have opined in this column about the inflexibility of biological sex, my critics have chalked it up to my biblical worldview, which they often deride as unscientific. So, I call to the stand perhaps the world’s greatest atheist, the Oxford biologist Richard Dawkins.

Submit a Letter to the Editor

Include name, address & phone. E-mail: letters@signalscv.com.

But, if you’re like me, you’ve become accustomed to the reality that more and more motorists, who either don’t know the rules or have come to believe they are exempt from following them, have no problem cheating. They’ve decided that “their truth” allows them to act without regard for the “actual truth” of the four-way stop. They’re playing with a new set of rules they’ve created according to their desires and purposes.

To some, this may seem trivial in a column about ethics, but stay with me. If you’ve been playing with open eyes and an educated mind, you’ve noticed the rapid erosion of what has consistently been recognized as “truth.” The example of the four-way stop is silly but works, in this case, to point out the unintended consequences when some in a society determine to substitute “their truth” for time-honored natural law.

What happens when the rules of the four-way stop no longer apply? Chaos happens, frustrations mount, anger rises, tempers flare, and sometimes, reckless action results in unethical hand signals or dented fenders. All of these are unintended by those who would argue that their apparent reckless actions showed a much better way to handle a four-way stop.

That’s always the case. Those who decide to replace truth with what amounts to personal desire always insist they are doing what will make everything better. Simply put, those who replace or redefine truth realize that they must make their untruths seem better for everyone. And if the public isn’t convinced, they manipulate the legislative and legal systems to make adherence to the “new truth” mandatory.

Take, for example, the “new truth” that biological sex is fluid, flexible, and has no relation to the “being” of the person. This “new truth” is grounded in the assumption that sex is not binary. That is, there is no such thing as male and female. Instead, a person can be either, both, or fluctuate as they feel best. This has created the well-known battle over pronouns, which would be part of every standup routine were it not for the

In a recent post on X, Dawkins responded to a 2019 article in Scientific American in which the author argued that sex, like gender, is actually a “spectrum.” He gave examples of chromosomal abnormalities, intersex disorders, and the apparent similarities between the brains of trans individuals and those of the opposite sex. His conclusion was “[T]he science is clear and conclusive: sex is not binary, transgender people are real. … Trans humans represent the complexity and diversity that are fundamental features of life, evolution, and nature itself. That is a fact.”

Dawkins responded on X: “This ridiculous article (shame on the once-great Scientific American) ignorantly misunderstands the nature of the sex binary … Sex is not defined by chromosomes, nor by anatomy, nor by psychology or sociology, nor by personal inclination, nor by ‘assignment at birth,’ but by gamete size. It happens to be embryologically DETERMINED by chromosomes in mammals … But it is universally DEFINED by the binary distinction between sperms and eggs. You may argue about ‘gender’ if you wish (biologists have better things to do) but sex is a true binary, one of rather few in biology.”

Dawkins is clear. There are males and females because there are sperm and eggs. Beyond stating the obvious, Dawkins does so from a platform of natural law rather than any ideology, religion, or political bias. And what does that say? Simply this. Absolute truth exists and is essential to the organization and maintenance of humanity. This is true when it comes to being male and female, and all the way down to the ethics governing four-way stops.

Wake up, America. Open your eyes and realize the unintended consequences of those who boldly and surreptitiously erode natural law and other essential truths for their purposes. If you want to champion a narrative, choose natural law that binds the universe together and has governed humanity throughout history.

And then, hope you don’t encounter the “my truth is real and you must agree” people when you pull up to that four-way stop.
