f you’re feeling pressure to plan the perfect Valentine’s Day date, it may be time to veer away from tradition. While flowers, chocolates and dinner for two is a classic, thinking outside the box can make for just as romantic of an experience.

Consider these simple date ideas to reduce stress and make your day extra special.

Take a Dance Class

Learning something new together can be a great way to bond with your significant other. Research dance studios in your area and book a lesson for a night out. Many studios offer new or first-time discounts and typically have a variety of lessons available from ballroom to salsa, cha cha and more.

If dancing isn’t really your thing, consider another skill-building class you can do together like pottery, cooking or painting, for example.

Recreate Your First Date

Take a trip down memory lane and go back to the beginning of your relationship by recreating your first - or a favorite - date. Whether you went bowling, mini golfing, to dinner and a movie or something else entirely, reliving the past can be a special way to connect and show your partner how much you care.

Plan an Indoor Picnic

If it’s too cold outside for an actual picnic, clear some space in your living room and throw down a blanket. Pack a basket of finger foods like sandwiches, cheese and crackers, fruit, a bottle of wine and dessert for a romantic meal for two in the comfort of home.

Book a Staycation

A getaway doesn’t have to mean going far from home. Become tourists in town by booking a night at a nearby hotel and visiting some local landmarks you’ve been wanting to check out or haven’t experienced in a while. A simple break from routine can make for an enjoyable escape, even if you’re only a few miles from home.

Schedule a Photoshoot

If the last time you had your photo professionally taken was on your wedding day or a family vacation, hire a photographer for a couples photo session, and use it as an opportunity to create fun memories together. Many photographers offer mini sessions, which only take 15-30 minutes, leaving time for a night out afterward. For an inexpensive option, have a friend take a few casual pictures or use a selfie stick to help document your date.

Cook Dinner Together

Restaurants are often booked up on Valentine’s Day, so try something different this year and make a special home-cooked meal together. Whether you make a tried-and-true favorite or whip up something new, like a heart-shaped dish, you’ll bond over the experience while creating a tangible (and

Keeping Floral Arrangements Fresh Make Fresh Cuts Use a sharp scissor or prun-

ing shears to cut about one inch from the bottom of each stem at a 45-degree angle. Continue this process every three days or so. The 45-degree angle prevents the stem from squishing during the cut and enables it to absorb more water.

Water Quickly Place the flowers in a vase or other vessel with water promptly after making the cuts.

Monitor Water Temperature The temperature of the water in the vase should coordinate with the flowers on display.

Prune Folliage Before placing cut flowers in a vase, remove extra leaves at the base of the stems that will fall underneath the water line. This helps to limit bacteria growth in the water and cuts back on foul odors. (MC) 

What’s New in Santa Clarita

I

t seems as if every day something new is popping up in the Santa Clarita Valley. New restaurants, new businesses and new city facilities. Here’s a short rundown and status updates on a few notable “newish” SCV projects.

Skyline Ranch Park

The city of Santa Clarita will open Skyline Ranch Park sometime this spring.

Amenities available at the park include a full-size basketball court with four nets, two tennis courts with four pickleball overlays and a shade-sheltered playground ideal for family outings.

The park will also offer a large baseball field complete with shaded seating and dugouts nestled into the mountainside.

A large multipurpose field will include lighting around the perimeter and on the walking trail, as well as a new restroom building and plenty of parking.

This will be Santa Clarita’s 38th community park.

The park is located on Plum Canyon Road and Sierra Highway in Canyon Country

Valencia Community Center

The new Valencia Community Center, located at Summit Park, was previously the home of the Santa Clarita YMCA. The city has been renovating the building to transform it into the city’s third community center, joining the community centers in Newhall and Canyon Country that serve as community engagement and enrichment hubs.

The highlight of the new center will be the city’s first indoor pool. This will be the ninth pool in the city and will allow for year-round aquatic activities.

The heated indoor pool will offer a diverse range of programs, from swimming lessons to water exercise classes.

The Valencia Community Center will also house a variety of spaces tailored for different programs and activities. It promises to offer a broad spectrum of programming and classes, contributing to the expansion of the city’s recreational offerings on the west side of Santa Clarita.

Popular programs such as preschool and afterschool programming, contract classes, as well as fitness and enrichment classes will be offered.

The Valencia Community Center is expected to open in the next few months. It is located at 26147 McBean Parkway 91355.

Indoor Roller Rink

Work is underway on the city’s highly anticipated indoor roller rink located directly behind the Santa Clarita Activities Center on Centre Pointe Parkway at the Santa Clarita Sports Complex, 20880 Centre Pointe Parkway, Santa Clarita 91350. This new facility will offer roller skating as well as full-size basketball and pickleball courts.

The fully enclosed, multiuse facility will also include a volleyball court, a family restroom, storage, spectator seating, a DJ booth with sound and lightening systems, kitchen/concession area and designated special event area.

Blue Cloud Bike Park

In April, the Santa Clarita City Council approved a design contract for the proposed Blue Cloud Bike Park. The 526 acres of Haskell Canyon Open Space was acquired by the city in June 2011. In August 2022, Blue Cloud Open Space, which is 196 acres, was acquired along the eastern boundary of Haskell Open Space. The area totals over 720 acres and approximately 500 acres have been determined to be an ideal location for a bike park.

The site allows more diverse downhill biking trails ranging from beginner to expert and a climbing trail back to the top as well as the ability to create single-track trails of varying difficulty, space for pump tracks, jump tracks, technical elements and supporting amenities such as parking, restrooms, rest areas with shade and a repair station.

Shadowbox Studio Project

In August, the Santa Clarita City Council approved the Shadowbox Studio Project to be located at the entrance to Placerita Canyon off Railroad Avenue in Newhall.

Residents can expect to see street improvements before the studios officially open, including street widening, installation of traffic signals, and upgrades to the existing railroad crossing at 13th

Street and Railroad Avenue in Newhall.

Construction on the roads is expected to start this summer and last for two years.

The full-service film and television studio campus is expected to include 19 sound stages, a two-story production support warehouse building, a three-story office building, catering facilities, as well as a four-story (five parking levels) parking structure and a surface parking lot.

The project is expected to generate approximately 2,400 full time industry jobs and more than $1 billion of annual economic impact.

New Business

As businesses close, others open. Here’ a few of the most recent arrivals, or expected business arrivals in the SCV. Handel’s Homemade Ice Cream, serving up freshly made, handcrafted ice cream since 1945, opened a new location in Stevenson Ranch at 25880 The Old Road. The grand opening celebration was held Feb. 8-10.

Daiso, the renowned global retail chain offering a wide range of affordable and unique products, including Japanese inspired home decor, stationery, food and more, announced the grand opening of its newest store at The Plaza at Golden Valley. The store is located at 19269 Golden Valley Road, Canyon Country 91387.

Makenna Koffee (23881 Newhall Ranch Road, Santa Clarita 91355) opened in early January. It offers “good vibes” and unique coffee.

Mendocino Farms (24250 Valencia Blvd., Santa Clarita 91355) opened Jan. 23 and offers “craveable” sandwiches and salads.

Santa Cruz Brewing will open in the former location of Telco Brewery inside Valencia’s Fremont Court business park, according to co-owner Anthony Santa Cruz. Santa Cruz hopes for a March opening.

Booku PoBoys is “coming soon” to Canyon Country in the former location of the Brass Monkey (18511 Soledad Canyon Road, Canyon Country 91351). The eatery promises the flavors of New Orleans with seafood or roast beef po’boys on French bread, gumbo, red beans and rice, crawfish and beignets. 

W

e have said it before — one of the best ways to explore the state is by driving through it and we have so many gorgeous backroads and scenic drives here in Southern California. We have coastal highways, long winding mountain roads, desert backroads, etc.

I love driving through beautiful places, but passengers definitely have the advantage, being able to take in all the scenery without worrying about keeping an eye on the road. That’s what makes one popular scenic drive in Los Angeles so special. It has almost as many awesome overlooks as it has miles, so drivers get to pull over and enjoy all of its stunning views.

This drive is easily accessible and winds along the spine of the Santa Monica Mountains between the Los Angeles basin and the suburbs of the San Fernando Valley. At just 12 miles, you could complete it in 30 minutes to an hour without stops and depending on traffic. That leaves tons of time to stop, enjoy the views, walk around, and take some great photos.

You can start your journey at either end, but for now, we will begin at the east end where Mulholland Drive begins at Cahuenga Boulevard, right off of Highway 101 in Hollywood.

The first overlook on this drive — the Jerome C. Daniel Overlook above the Hollywood Bowl — may be the most famous. It features telescopes and epic views of downtown Los Angeles, The Hollywood sign, and on a clear day, the Pacific Ocean.

Not too far down the road is the Universal City Overlook which as the name says offers

spectacular views over Universal City, Studio City, and the beautiful mountains beyond.

The iconic Mulholland Scenic Overlook is situated on the outer edge of a curve in the road which allows for the widest panoramic views of the Los Angeles suburbs. This is a particularly popular vista point for sunsets.

Pull into the large paved parking area at the Barbara A. Fine Overlook at the Summit and take the short walking trail to several unique scenic viewpoints that show off the beauty of the Hollywood Hills, Fryman Canyon, The Simi Hills, and more.

The Narrows Overlook is a unique spot along the drive with expansive views on both sides of the road. There is parking on the north side of the road and a little unpaved area to walk and enjoy the view over Beverly Hills on the south side. Be careful crossing the road - it’s a curvy road and people tend to cruise pretty fast.

A historical marker at the next overlook recognizes a couple for which it is named, Charles and Lotte Melhor, who lived in the area for over 50 years, working hard for the recognition and preservation of the natural areas and scenic overlooks along Mulholland Drive.

Stone Canyon Overlook has plenty of parking space and a little paved walking path where you can stretch your legs and take in pretty views of the Santa Monica Mountains as well as the reservoir in Stone Canyon.

At the Johnson Overlook, there is a small area for just a few cars to pull over and glance

Barbara A. Fine Overlook at the Summit down the hillside from into the exclusive Bel Air neighborhood down into the San Fernando Valley.

It is especially lovely in the evening as the suburban lights come up in the valley.

The last overlook (or the first if you decide to start at the eastern end) is The Groves Overlook, a scenic stop where you can stroll among beautiful and fragrant eucalyptus trees and experience panoramic views over the heart of the valley down below.

Whether you take this drive during early light, in the middle of a clear day, or enjoy sunset and the city lights at night, this is an epic experience everyone should enjoy at least once. Most culinary trails offer visitors a map, or a phone app, that makes it easy to navigate to each nearby participating business.

Here are three California culinary trails to delight the senses.

California Cheese Trail in Sonoma County

alentine’s Day, a celebration of love and affection, has traditionally been marked by gestures of thoughtful gifts and romantic dining experiences.

This year, I encourage all of you, instead of funneling your affection into big box stores, to turn your attention to the heart and soul of our City — the local businesses. In 2024, Fox Business estimates that the average couple will spend $192 on Valentine’s day, a 9.9% increase from last year.

Remember, spending that money locally isn’t just a gift for your loved one, but also a lifeline for the small businesses that make up our local economy.

From the restaurant on Main Street that remembers your favorite dish to the boutique florist who handpicks each bloom, this Valentine’s Day is an opportunity to celebrate love while also nurturing the community that nurtures us.

If you’re looking to buy a gift for your special someone, Santa Clarita is home to more than 9,000 businesses of every size and type that are sure to not only have what you’re looking for, but also

Arrange salmon portions on paper and spread barbecue sauce over each portion.

Bake 5-8 minutes, depending on thickness and size, or until just cooked in center and caramelized on top.

In bowl, combine sliced apple sticks, cabbage, celery and red onion slices; toss lightly.

In separate bowl, whisk mayonnaise, herbs, lime juice and lime zest.

Fold dressing and sesame seeds into slaw and toss together.

Divide apple slaw between serving plates and top with glazed salmon. Sprinkle with extra sesame seeds.

Heat grill to medium heat.

Slice apples horizontally into thick round wedges and remove seeds using fork.

Remove portobello stems.

In small bowl, combine 1/8 cup olive oil, lemon juice, garlic, oregano and salt.

Using basting brush, coat portobellos on both sides with olive oil mixture. Grill stem sides down 2 minutes then flip. Add goat cheese to portobellos and grill 2-3 minutes until cheese is melted.

Remove from grill.

Use remaining olive oil to coat apple rounds. Grill apple rounds 1-2 minutes per side to lightly char.

Chloe Sevigny’s C.Z. Guest is portrayed as being more sympathetic to Truman, while Joanne Carson (Molly Ringwald) remained his friend to the end.

Then there’s Ann Woodward (Demi Moore), who was never an insider with The Swans and became a tragic social pariah as Capote kept perpetuating the rumor that she had intentionally shot and killed her husband, though a grand jury had ruled the death accidental. Knowing the Esquire piece was about to run and that she would be implicated once again, Ann killed herself.

A tragic shooting. A suicide. Extramarital affairs all around. Alcoholism. Betrayal. Truman’s tumultuous and often horrific relationship with the abusive John O’Shea (Russell Tovey). Heavy, heavy stuff to be sure, but the series also captures the magic bubble of New York society in the 1960s and 1970s. (It’s surely no accident that the vast majority of scenes take place indoors. The Vietnam War, civil rights protests, Nixon and Watergate — all of that was taking place out THERE. The Swans were stuck in a kind of time warp.)

We get some fascinating albeit totally fictionalized sequences, most notably in the third episode, which comes in the guise of a documentary by the Maysles Brothers about Capote’s legendary Black and White Ball. (No such documentary exists.)

There’s also a fantastical and wholly imagined sequence in which James Baldwin (Chris Chalk) has a kind of intervention with Truman.

In keeping with Capote’s “nonfiction novel” approach to writing, “Feud: Capote vs. The Swans” is inspired by true events but takes great liberties with real-life characters and situations. As a kind of alternative-universe representation of some fascinating albeit mostly unlikable personalities, it’s hard for us to look away, even though we realize we are bearing witness to some high-profile human train wrecks.  Copyright 2024 Chicago Sun-Times

Aging Issues for Older Drivers

riving is a responsibility that should never be taken lightly. Estimates from the Environmental Protection Agency indicate the average small car weighs around 2,500 pounds and the average large car weighs about 4,200 pounds, while SUVs and trucks can weigh as much as 6,000 pounds.

The weight of cars underscore just how dangerous the roads can be when fast-moving vehicles are being driven by drivers whose focus or physical abilities have been compromised.

Lack of focus and physical issues can affect drivers of all ages, but the National Institute on Aging notes that age-related changes can alter a person’s ability to drive. Older adults will not necessarily experience physical and cognitive issues that can affect their ability to safely operate a motor vehicle. However, the NIA reports that certain variables that tend to affect older adults could compromise their ability to drive.

Muscle/joint stiffness and weakness Aging can cause muscle and joint stiffness and weaken muscles. Arthritis is a common condition among older adults and the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases reports that swelling in the joints is one of the more common symptoms associated with the condition.

Stiffness, weakness and swelling in the joints can make it harder for drivers to turn their heads, effectively steer their vehicles and brake safely.

Diminishing eyesight Strong eyesight is essential to safe driving. As drivers get older, changes in their eyesight can make it harder to see pedes-

trians, fellow motorists, animals on roadways, and any movements outside of their direct line of sight.

The Optometrists Network reports that aging has been shown to cause a loss of peripheral vision by one to three degrees for every decade of life.

The NIA urges drivers 60 and older to schedule a dilated eye exam every one to two years. Certain issues affecting drivers’ vision might be fixable, while others may result in avoiding driving at certain times of day, such as at night and when the sun is at its brightest, or giving up driving entirely.

Diminishing hearing Similar to diminishing eyesight, hearing loss, even if it’s complete hearing loss, can affect a driver’s ability to drive safely.

Drivers must be able to hear horns and sirens from other vehicles as well as any noises coming from their own cars that could indicate a problem with the vehicle.

Medications Data from the health policy research organization KFF indicates 89% of adults 65 and older are currently taking a prescription medicine. Medications often produce side effects that can compromise a driver’s ability to drive safely. Such effects include drowsiness, lightheadedness and diminished alertness.

Aging drivers should discuss medication side effects with their physicians and what, if anything, they can do to counter the effects of a given prescription on their driving abilities.

“Wicked,” prequel to the classic 1939 film “The Wizard of Oz,” is a musical, but it won’t air live on television. It will be released in movie theaters as a two-part film series — the first releasing on Nov. 27, 2024 and the second a year later. It’s a film adaptation of the Tony-Award winning Broadway musical, which was based on the novel written by Gregory Maguire.

Next up for Ellis is a new series called “Second Wife,” that he’s coproducing with his wife, Meaghan Oppenheimer, for Hulu. It stars Ellis and Emma Roberts (“American Horror Story”) as a couple who spontaneously marry after meeting in London. The half-hour dramedy doesn’t have a premiere date yet, but it’s expected sometime in 2024.

Garden and Fruit Tree Care for February

lthough we are prone to occasional frosty nights in the winter months, this time of the year can offer some of the most productive and comfortable conditions to work outdoors. There are few insects to bother you and the sun is milder, so you are less likely to have skin damage or overheat while doing strenuous work.

General tips for February

Do keep in mind that the soil structure is also impacted by rain. Avoid working wet soil since it will compact and the helpful air pockets between particles will be compressed. Gooey mud-prints tracked indoors are not much appreciated, either. The clay soil that is dominant in most of Santa Clarita is particularly sticky.

Use the cool weather to clear, clean and prune. Chop trimmings small for composting. But expect the speed of composting to slow down or even stop when the thermometer falls under 55 degrees F. Use cold, windy or rainy days to garden inside. Look through books for garden ideas. Surf paper and internet catalogs for the most recently introduced items or to find old favorites.

Focus on fruit trees

We’re coming to the last chance for

major pruning of woody shrubs and trees. By the end of February, most of these plants will already be sprouting into active growth — meaning they can be more easily damaged with active sap flowing.

If you are planting new trees, do it soon before they start to bud out.

Fruit and nut tree varieties should be selected for your micro-climate. They all have different needs.

Equally, fungal infections and insect pests have favorite areas and favorite host trees. For example, in warmer coastal parts of Los Angeles, citrus trees fall easy prey to scale, whitefly and mealybug. In others areas, black rot can eat into the limbs of stone fruit trees (plum, apricot, nectarine, etc.). Fire blight can turn branches of fruiting and ornamental pears black just about everywhere.

And leaf-rollers and aphids can attack a whole assortment of fruit trees in warm winter climates where they are not killed off by frosts. Our area is now vulnerable to all of these since the climate has changed and our temperatures in winter are mostly 5 to 8 degrees warmer at night than they used to be a little over a decade ago.

The warming has allowed many of these pests to overwinter and start infesting more and more fruit trees.

Just as you have a lot of choices with tree cultivars, you also have a wide range of tree protecting winter sprays.

There are plenty of commercial products for sale, but I prefer to use the organic or old fashioned remedies that are less toxic and work as well – if not better. The best sprays to use in the winter are the dormant oil sprays, usually lime-sulfur or copper-sulfate. These sprays will help suffocate over-wintering insects and discourage fungal infections. Try to spray trees as soon as you can after leaf drop and, ideally, spray every three to four weeks until the flower buds swell.

Sprays can harm pollinating insects, so avoid any treatments while trees are in bloom. Do not use lime in any form on apricot trees — especially after they bud up — since they are lime sensitive. For more sensitive and evergreen fruit trees growing in the milder regions, try using a lighter fine oil spray made for leaf contact. Most of these treatments are all-natural and organically acceptable.

It is best to spray when winds are not blowing. Coat the whole tree from branch tips to base. Some fruit or nut trees can also be sprayed after bud drop. Do a little research into the needs of your specific kind of fruit tree(s). Always read all spray labels and follow directions carefully.

A Speed Trap in Santa Clarita The following is a copy of a letter to City Manager Ken Striplin.

I am writing to inform you once again of the speed trap being used to enhance revenue for the city of Santa Clarita. A speed trap is defined by a section of highway that’s calculated by the time it takes the vehicle to travel between two points. It is also defined by a team of multiple officers (two or more ) using a device to calculate your speed.

I am requesting a copy of the last highway traffic speed survey that was last done per the five-year annual mandate that must be done showing that the 80th percentile of traffic is reflected in the speed limit. If one hasn’t been done in the last five years, I am requesting a new survey be done and that I be made aware of it and receive a copy of it.

My contention is that the speed on Newhall Avenue is set too low, being it is a gateway to Downtown Newhall but also a six-lane highway with a center divider going to the freeway as well. The road used to be 50 mph before the Newhall redevelopment occurred and was then lowered to 40. All of the other six-lane median highways in this valley are 50 mph and I regularly see, like today, motorcycle officers consistently pulling over cars for driving the average speed on that road. Maybe five years ago I read an article in The Signal that the six motor cops we have write about 375 citations per week and, depending on the amount of the fines, it is unknown to the public how many dollars you bring in annually.

This afternoon while waiting at the traffic light to turn onto my street I saw one cop pull over a car, then another one riding on the sidewalk in the opposite direction of traffic for one block to get back to his hiding spot by the liquor store. That is another example of the speed trap tactics of the Sheriff ’s Department, hiding behind obstructions, parking with backs to the sunlight so drivers can’t see them, parking on sidewalks and simply waiting for cars to pass by.

I have witnessed very much abuse of power by the police in this valley targeting commuters as revenue enhancement and it needs to stop. Come to think about it, I would also like to see an official tally of all the citations the motorcycle officers wrote last year and the amount of fines collected by the city. In my view it is another form of taxation for driving on public roads. And punishment by the overbearing state.

I am expecting a written reply to my request soon and once again for the city to increase the speed on Newhall Avenue to 50 mph and if that is not done then I will use this letter as my defense shall I get another speeding ticket on that road. You have been notified and the judge will hear my evidence at my trial for another citation should that happen again.

What Winners Look Like

O

n Sunday, two groups of hard-working men will face off for the top prize in the National Football League.

Millions worldwide will tune in to watch our nation’s most extraordinary sporting event. The game will feature amazing feats of athletic prowess and devastating errors, leaving analysts to summarize the contest with “the play that won the game.” Ultimately, one team will hoist the trophy proudly, wearing shirts and hats specially designed for the moment.

They will be heralded as champions for scoring more points than their opponents and winning the contest.

But the Super Bowl is more than a game. It is more than a one-off athletic contest. The Super Bowl is a case study on what it takes to be a winner, to keep fighting to the end no matter the odds, and to do so with integrity and grit.

What we won’t see are all the years of practice and the countless hours of physical and mental training required to reach the pinnacle of gridiron greatness. We won’t stop to consider how many times in their athletic lives these men have lost and had to choke down the bile of defeat and muster up the courage to retake the field.

On Sunday, while we gorge ourselves on chips, sliders, and taco dip and pay close attention to see if the score at the end of each quarter makes us winners in the office Super Bowl Squares, there will be more to see than great plays and the drama of winning and losing. We’ll have frontrow seats to view the magnificence of grit.

And what is grit? It is that unstoppable passion to improve, to excel, and to finish the journey no matter how steep the hills may be. This Sunday, we’ll see grit packed into helmets and shoulder pads, but its true home will be the hearts and minds of the men who have come to give their all in pursuit of victory. So, as you watch the game, here’s what you’ll see. Grit comprises three equal passions, each of which is essential.

Surprisingly, the first essential is intelligence.

While the beasts in uniform may be mistaken for lumbering hunks of muscle, their intellectual ability enables split-second critical thinking, decision-making, and creativity. And they must excel in these critical areas while their opponents assault them physically. The ability to keep going against all odds begins with the intelligence necessary to learn from their mistakes and plot the

right course through the myriad obstacles, both known and unknown, that would overwhelm a lesser man.

But intelligence, while necessary, is not sufficient. The best wheels and most competent driver still need an engine to move forward. In life, that engine is the passion to persevere.

It is the drive to power through fatigue and even failure. The maxim summarizes this passion: “When the going gets tough, the tough keep going.”

The final element in grit will be glaringly apparent as the teams fight to victory. Men in a different kind of uniform with whistles will make sure of that. They will ensure that the players' intelligence and perseverance will be maintained within the ethical framework of integrity. Ultimately, victory must be gained within the rules of the game.

So, as you watch, consider this: How does our society match up? As we live out the Super Bowl of life in a competitive and dangerous world, what kind of athletes are we?

Are we a people who understand we must be men and women with grit? Are we championing intelligence and truth or bowing to the narrative that demands we appease the delusional dreamers lest they be offended? Are we a persevering people, or have we become a nation of critical, blame-shifting, comfort-seeking, sweat-avoiding weaklings? And lastly, are we people of integrity who demand of ourselves the highest levels of human dignity and live up to the most rigorous ethical standards?

At the end of the game, when the last seconds have ticked off and the final whistle has blown, we’ll see one team unabashedly celebrating victory while the other is forced to acknowledge defeat. Yet, in the end, no one will have lost except those who thought it was just a game and failed to learn the critical life lesson that intelligence, perseverance and integrity are essential to a thriving society.

I’m praying our nation will prize intelligence over delusion, perseverance over comfort and convenience, and especially integrity over compromise and corruption. If we can do that before the final whistle blows, we'll have finished our game as champions.
