he idea of having a “bucket list,” a list of things you want to see and do before you “kick the bucket” became a cultural touchstone after the release of the 2007 movie “The Bucket List.”

The film, a buddy comedy-drama directed and produced by the late Rob Reiner, written by Justin Zackha and starring Jack Nicholson and Morgan Freeman, introduced the term to a wide audience.

Having a “bucket list” soon became a widespread cultural phenomenon.

Zackha coined the term in 1999 for his personal list of goals before he died, linking it to the well-known phrase, “to kick the bucket.”

Food is a great bucket list item. Try something you’ve never eaten before but have always wondered about. It doesn’t have to be too exotic, it can be as simple as trying Kansas City barbeque or shark. Ask your friends about their favorite foods and maybe try one of those.

Create your own regional food tour.

This could be something like Lobster Rolls in Maine, Blue Crab in Maryland, Philly Cheesesteaks in Philadelphia, Alaskan Salmon, etc. Plan it around a vacation. Or, create your own regional food tour locally. Just look for some authentic restaurants so you can get the feel of the actual region.

Travel

Travel is usually a top contender for most bucket lists. Consider some of these options: Coast-to-Coast Train Vacations For many, the romance of train travel is the ultimate travel experience. While trains are not as luxurious as in years gone by, traveling coast-to-coast by train offers a unique glimpse of America.

Things to remember when traveling by train: • The train waits for no one. If a train makes a 10-15 minute stop and you want to get off and explore a little, be aware that the train will leave without you if you are not back on time.

• Any train trip that doesn’t end in a bus trip is a good trip. Trains breakdown. Tracks are damaged.

Stuff happens. Be patient and prepared with a plan B. I once had to abandon a Coast Starlight train from Los Angeles to Seattle in Sacramento after a train derailment forced my train to stop. The only option was to continue by Amtrak bus. I opted to rent a car and drive instead.

• Train arrival and departure times are a “suggestion.” Most long-distance trains have delays. Pack your patience. Don’t make “tight” connections.

Los Angeles to New York City The most common coast-to-coast route is to take the Southwest Chief from L.A. to Chicago. Travel through California, Arizona, New Mexico, Kansas, Missouri, Iowa and Illinois.

Winter Break Fun and Beyond to Keep Kids Busy

inter break in Santa Clarita doesn’t have to mean weeks of cabin fever and endless screen time for youths. From lowcost city day camps and cozy story hours to wild animal encounters and building LEGO towers, local families can fill the calendar with creative outings that keep kids busy, curious and connected.

Winter Adventure

Families looking to keep kids active, creative and connected during the long school break will find a full slate of options at the city’s Canyon Country and Newhall community centers.

Both centers are rolling out structured, low-cost (and in some cases free) day camps that blend art projects, games and sports.

Programs run through Friday, January 9, 2026.

The Canyon Country Community center will host three age-based options: Winter Buddies for young firsttime campers, Winter Adventures for elementary-age kids and a free Winter Teen Experience for older youth.

Winter Buddies offers an “intro to camp” experience for 4½- and 5-yearolds, with small-group activities on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 8 a.m. to noon at $15 per week per child for city residents ($20 for nonresidents).

For ages 5 to 11, Winter Adventures runs Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. at $40 per week per child ($45 for nonresidents), giving working parents a full-day option.

Teens get their own dedicated space through the Winter Teen Experience, a free program for ages 12 to 17 of-

fered Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m., where participants can expect a mix of arts and crafts, organized sports, group games and seasonal activities that emphasize fun as much as growth.

Over in Old Town, the Newhall Community Center is focusing its winter offerings on teens with a free Winter Teen Experience of its own.

Animal Tracks Weekend Public Experience

Weekend visitors to Agua Dulce can trade screen time for wild time at Animal Tracks Sanctuary’s Weekend Public Experience, a guided outdoor tour that runs Fridays at 1 p.m., Saturdays at 11 a.m., and Sundays at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. Each small-group visit offers families a rare chance to stand just a few feet from rescued wildlife while hearing how these “animal ambassadors” came to the sanctuary and why they can’t return to the wild.

As guests follow staff and volunteers

along the sanctuary paths, they learn how each animal fits into its native ecosystem and how human choices — from the illegal pet trade to habitat loss—have shaped their stories.

The emphasis is on observation and respect rather than hands-on encounters, so visitors enjoy meaningful, close-up views that keep the animals’ comfort and safety front and center.

The experience is designed with families in mind and is best suited for kids ages 5 and up with adult supervision, with capacity capped at about 45 people per tour to keep things personal. Practical details are straightforward: arrive 10 to 15 minutes early to check in, wear closed-toe shoes and layers for changing outdoor weather, and plan to purchase drinks or snacks in the barn if you get hungry.

Behind the scenes, every ticket helps fund Animal Tracks’ mission to rescue, rehabilitate and provide lifelong care for animals impacted by human activity, especially the exotic pet trade.

Visitors are encouraged to carry the message forward by sharing photos responsibly on social media and using hashtags like #notapet, #rescuedanimal and #keepwildlifewild to remind friends that these creatures belong in sanctuaries and natural habitats—not living rooms.

Nest: Healing Art Studio offers a peaceful start to the New Year with a free, one-hour mindful art session for teens and adults on Jan. 7 from 1-2 p.m.

Developed under the direction of Emily Skelton, LMFT and registered art therapist, the program blends guided meditation with judgment-free art making. Each session begins with a calming meditation, followed by a demonstration of the day’s art project.

“South Pacific”

Give Your Holiday Tree a Second Life

A

s the holiday season winds down and the festive decorations are taken down, the familiar question arises as it does each year: “What should we do with our fresh tree or wreath now that the celebrations are over?” The City of Santa Clarita encourages residents to recycle their greenery through a convenient collection and drop-off program available Citywide. These efforts not only reduce waste, but also help support a cleaner, more sustainable community. From now through Saturday, Jan. 10, you can recycle your fresh holiday trees and wreaths through two easy options: curbside collection or drop-off at designated community locations.

For many households, curbside collection is the most convenient way to recycle a holiday tree. Simply place your tree at the curb on your regular trash collection day and it will be picked up for recycling along with normal service. For those living in multi-family communities, the process is just as easy. Simply place your tree next to the designated trash enclosure for collection. Be sure to remove all lights, tinsel, ornaments and stands.

If your tree is taller than six feet, it should be cut in half to ensure safe and efficient collection. Fresh wreaths can also be recycled curbside by placing them inside the green organics bin, as long as decorative items have been removed. Sorry, flocked trees and wreaths cannot be recycled.

Residents who prefer to drop off

their trees and wreaths, can visit any of the City’s designated recycling locations through Saturday, Jan. 10.

Special bins for fresh greenery are available at the Newhall Community Center (22421 Market Street), Central Park (27150 Bouquet Canyon Road) and the Canyon Country Community Center (18410 Sierra Highway). These convenient sites allow residents across the City to participate when curbside service is not the best option for their household.

Recycling holiday trees and fresh wreaths plays a meaningful role in the City’s sustainability efforts. Once collected, these natural materials are transformed into mulch or compost, which is then used throughout Santa Clarita’s open space, parks and street medians. This mulch helps conserve water, supports healthy soils and maintains attractive, low-maintenance landscaping enjoyed by residents yearround. By participating in the recycling program, you help create these essential materials, reduce landfill waste and directly support the care and long-term health of public spaces. A simple seasonal action becomes part of a much larger commitment to environmental stewardship across the community.

Recycling your holiday tree is more than a good habit — it’s a New Year’s promise to reduce waste, reuse resources and recycle whenever possible. Together, we can build a more sustainable Santa Clarita and protect the environment we all share.

How Microclimates Make or Break a Garden

I

t’s 48 degrees F at 7 a.m. in the upper level of my hillside garden — chilly but not an outright threat to tender young early-season transplants such as basil.

Some 100 feet downhill, it’s 41 degrees F. Had I set basil seedlings there, those warmth-dependent, super-delicate sprouts would be flopped over like shoelaces, gasping for heat and assistance.

But I didn’t do that, because I know where the hot spots and chill hills are in my quarter-acre garden and orchard. These are microclimates, distinct facets of topography that can make the difference between success or failure for many of the high-maintenance vegetables, flowers, and herbs that dedicated gardeners grow.

My little plateau is where chilly overnight air pools in spring, creating a mini-fridge that’s fine for preservation but not for production. Once harvested, basil would be fine stored in a produce drawer at 41 degrees F — after I’ve grown it in a warm spot.

The funny thing about this little cold-air plateau is that, six weeks later, it’s the opposite: a hot spot. Shielded from cool maritime winds by a hedge of scrub brush, open to the high-summer sun high in the sky, it gathers early morning warmth and holds the heat until 8 p.m., when evening shadow washes over from northwesterly trees. So here, where I dare not plant delicate early-season basil, just eight weeks later, I have a thriving bed of heirloom corn, powering its way up toward the sun.

Now that’s a microclimate! I make a point of taking advantage of it, because understanding the climatic topography of your yard and garden is crucial to horticultural success.

Most gardeners have some intuitive understanding of this. One wouldn’t plant sunflowers on the shady north side of a house, for instance. Fuchsias don’t belong on a heat-blasted south-facing wall.

Climate, using the simplest definition, is “weather over time” — time meaning decades or centuries. Climates are generally applied to broad regions, often international: Mediterranean (a term for the Mediterranean basin as well as California), temperate mid-latitude, subarctic, subtropical and so on.

A microclimate is the climate of a discrete small area that differs from that of the general surrounding region.

Often, because of the geographic features that create a microclimate, the variations are seasonal.

North America’s West Coast is arguably the world capital of microclimates.

Understand Your Yard’s Microclimates

Cold air pools in low places and in places where it’s blocked from dropping further. At the Seattle home I once lived in, on crisp early spring mornings, there would be frost within five feet of the back of the house but none 25 feet farther out in the yard, even though the elevation difference was minimal. The back of the house was the geographic barrier that gath-

ered cold air.

Concrete, stone and dark materials absorb and hold heat: If you’re looking for an ideal place for tomatoes, pick the front of a concrete wall or wood fence.

But that won’t work if you’re in a really hot climate, as tomatoes won’t set fruit when temperatures are too hot. These garden plants we love are fussy!

Some microclimate miniature zones are well-known horticulturally. Here on the West Coast, “dry shade” is a notoriously difficult landscape zone — whereas virtually no such thing exists in, say, southern Florida.

Try to grow shade-loving impatiens beneath a mature cedar tree here and you’ll need to water it every other day from June to September. What little rain falls is filtered by the tree’s thick frondy branches above; surface-seeking tree roots also extract moisture from the dirt. Flowers planted beneath will suffer, whether they like shade or not.

The place to learn more is at local nurseries and garden stores or in garden guides that draw on decades of experience in particular regions. And the whole enterprise is also a DIY arena that’s productive, fascinating, and a bit semiprofessional; casual gardeners pay little attention to these arcane details.

trellis behind a bed in which I planted my favorite long-season golden tomatoes. I hoped the dark wood would hold heat early in the spring and boost plant growth and then extend the season by conserving whatever sun and warmth came our way in October and November. Sure enough, that’s what happened: These plants had ripe fruit, and more of it, two weeks earlier than some identical tomatoes I planted just 8 feet away at the edge of my sweet corn. I enjoyed my last Kellogg’s Breakfast tomato at Thanksgiving.

The classic mechanical microclimate is formed by placing plastic row cover over beds, held up by hoops. You can position this over the plants just for spring or throughout the season. The ultimate version of this is a greenhouse, which may be tiny, tucked in next to a barn or garden shed, or large, with a frame and fiberglass panels. Row covers and greenhouses harvest warmth and, in some cases, fend off pests, such as the dreaded cabbage worm. But they can also encourage problems, too. They boost humidity, which then invites mold and mildew.

Small Differences Yield Big Outcomes

The key fact is that plants are exceptionally sensitive to small climatic differences. My neighbor uphill from me, just a quarter mile away and 200 feet higher, can grow chile peppers. I can’t. The daily temperature difference is probably less than 5 degrees F — but that extra warmth over a summer’s 100 days adds up to a significant horticultural disparity.

uying a car is one of life’s bigger financial decisions — and timing can make all the difference.

But according to auto experts at Wells Fargo, the best time to buy a car isn’t about chasing seasonal sales or waiting for tax credits. It’s about being prepared before the need becomes urgent.

“It’s just a reality that buying when you absolutely have to can limit your ability to get a good deal,” said Robert Lyles, retail auto relationship management director, East Market for Wells Fargo Auto. “Doing your research, knowing what you’re looking for, and understanding how much you can afford will give you a leg up when it’s time to negotiate.”

So how do you know when you’re ready? It starts with understanding your finances. Michael Meganck, retail auto relationship management director, West Market, advises buyers to begin with a clear budget.

Test drive vehicles, use services like Carfax for used cars and research warranties. “Give yourself time to evaluate your options,” Lyles advised.

While traditional timing strategies like month-end shopping are less effective today, seasonal trends still offer opportunities. Spring sees higher demand due to tax refunds, while summer holidays may bring discounts. Fall is ideal for new model clear-outs, and winter can offer deals on convertibles and used inventory.

Wizard of Wall Street When Nancy Pelosi entered Congress in 1987, her stock portfolio was worth $610,000 to $785,000, a nice chunk of change.

She is retiring at the end of next year, thank God. She ripped up her copy of President Donald Trump’s State of the Union speech in 2021 and afterward said she felt “liberated.” Class act.

When she retires, her stock portfolio will be worth $133.7 million, give or take a few million.

That is a whopping, unheard-of 16,930% return on investment.

Is she the savviest investor in the history of Wall Street? Or did her advance knowledge of government dealings with certain industries and corporations give her an inside advantage? Commonly known as insider trading, it is both unethical and illegal. Did Nancy turn over her inside information to Paul, her husband, so he could make the actual investments, thus absolving her of any wrongdoing?

Do you think Nancy will be investigated during her final year of corrupt governance? Or do you think she will be allowed to fade away into the vineyards of Napa, where she will need a fairly big calculator to add up her ill-gotten gains?

One more thing. The yearly salary of a member of the U.S. House of Representatives is $174,000.

Grow Your Zone

s the New Year has arrived, I’ve been pondering the idea of “stepping out of my comfort zone.” Like me, you’ve heard this many times. “Step out of your comfort zone and try it!” For some reason, other people like to make us do just that, to go outside the supposed boundaries of our comfort.

Those who call us to do so make it sound like comfort is a bad thing, a self-centered thing, a barrier to better living. All this time I’ve believed comfort was a good thing! And so I’ve been thinking about this and have come to a conclusion: Calling someone to “step out of their comfort zone” is foolish and actually quite counterproductive.

If the thing you want them to do is “outside” their comfort zone, eventually they’ll retreat into the zone when you’re not looking. This is especially true if you keep telling them that the “thing” is actually uncomfortable! So, I have a better idea.

Here it is. Instead of saying “step out of your comfort zone” to get me to do something uncomfortable, say “enlarge your comfort zone to encompass a new opportunity.” Ah! Enlarging my comfort zone calls on me to do three things. First, I must believe there are more “comfortable” things than those I already know in my safe little zone. Second, I must agree, at least to some extent, that what is outside my comfort zone may be helpful, meaningful, even fun. Lastly, I must be open to the possibility that expanding my zone to encompass something new has a better-than-even chance of raising my quality of life.

Isn’t that what we all want anyway? Don’t we want some more “comfortable” things that add to the pleasant variety of life?

The real problem is change. But if we’re playing with open eyes, we have to agree that change is inevitable. If the business books are correct, the pace of change is not going to slow down anytime soon. Given this, it is counterproductive to resist change. And I’ll go even further and say people don’t really hate change. Here’s why: When people say, “I hate change,” what they’re really saying is, “I hate the thought that change might make me uncomfortable.” They begin with the premise that change will be bad, even though there is a case to be made that change is often good. God must have thought change was a good idea when He decided to make the sun rise and set every day. The Earth is constantly rotating, bringing the change of light and

darkness, while it is steadily revolving around the sun, bringing the change of seasons. Trees change colors, grass grows, and we grow older every day.

Nothing remains static: not our eyesight, our nails, our hair, or our weight, sadly! As human beings, we are “change machines.” Every day we are different, and were it not so, we would be bored. Remember? “Variety is the spice of life.”

We need change, and we actually love it ... so long as we can still be comfortable!

We also love change that is outside of ourselves.

Who doesn’t enjoy a new purchase, a new car, a new couch?

Who doesn’t enjoy a new restaurant find, a new book, a new blouse, or a suit coat? And what about the growth and maturity of a child? Don’t we work hard to bring about change in our kids, as they progress from self-centered brats into helpful, loving adults? Don’t we pray for change when they’re in junior high? And wasn’t the most significant change in all of life something we actually made happen when we decided to have kids in the first place? Talk about change!

So why do we always hear that “people hate change?” The truth is that people hate being uncomfortable, and this preoccupation with self prevents most of us from even considering that change can be good.

The real problem with change is that we’ve become so comfortable with ourselves. When Jesus came into this world, what He brought was God’s mirror. He forced us to look at ourselves as God sees us, with all of our brokenness in plain sight. But then, through the power of His redemptive love, He also called us to trust that he can change us through faith. Ultimately, change is our only hope.

So, as you settle on your list of New Year’s resolutions, try this: Think of something you’re uncomfortable doing, but would really improve your life. Then check off all the myths you currently believe that keep you from being comfortable doing what you know is best. Then do it! And when you find the reward change can bring you, you won’t be tempted to retreat to a zone of comfort. Instead, you’ll find your zone has grown to encompass something that genuinely improves your place in this world. So, don’t settle for “stepping out of your comfort zone.” Instead, be bold and grow your zone!
