The expression often draws a smile, but there’s so much truth to the saying. After all, without it, no matter your amount of success or wealth, not much else matters.

But that’s easy to take for granted — unless things go wrong.

And then, it becomes all-important.

In the Santa Clarita Valley, we are blessed to have a number of great health care options, led by Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital and Kaiser Permanente, organizations that not only realize that, but spends tens of millions of dollars each year to support preventative programs, informational outreach and also low- and no-cost health clinics and facilities that serve those in need.

In looking at all of this support systems in place, it’s important to remember that not only will we all need some of their services at one point or another in our lives, but also that a proactive approach to managing our health not only keeps us alive much longer and improves quality of life, but also has a significant impact on our economic health, as well as the health of our future generations.

So as the winter winds down and we look forward to spring, we keep this in mind and hope you enjoy our look at how these providers positively impact the Santa Clarita Valley, as well as a healthy and happy 2019.

WHERE BUSINESSES NEED TO PROTECT PRIVACY STEVE STURGEON

T

he need for the destruction of confidential materials was brought into greater focus with the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act, or HIPAA. While the act brought about serious changes to how such materials are handled, there are some misconceptions on how you should address the information.

Probably the most common HIPAA misconception is that it requires the destruction of protected health information, or PHI. It doesn’t. Nowhere in any of the five HIPAA rules does it say a word about data destruction, particle size or anything about how or where PHI has to be destroyed.

What it says is that covered entities are required to prevent unauthorized access to PHI. That’s it. But even with such a vague directive, it was enough to get health care organizations to outsource their data destruction.

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) gave some direction. Its expectation regarding destruction came when asked for an example of what was meant by “physical safeguards to prevent unauthorized access.” The example they provided, completely separate from the law itself, was “for instance, the destruction of discarded PHI.” Still destruction was not specifically required by the law. In fact, a few years ago,

a consultant in the Midwest caused some trouble when he convinced health care organizations they did not have to shred at all. He took the position that recycling was enough because, if done with some control, it still prevented unauthorized access to PHI. Eventually, that trend died, although there are still some health care organizations relying on recycling instead of destruction for security.

Now, you might think the Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health (HITECH) amendment to HIPAA added a destruction requirement. It did not. HITECH did, however, add the Health Data Breach Notification provisions, stating that if there was a

security breach, the authorities, media, and patients must be notified. Further, it stated that improperly discarded paper and electronic equipment containing PHI would be considered a security breach. HHS later issued guidance that said encrypted or wiped hard drives and paper that was made practicably unreadable would not be considered a security breach when discarded.

Like every other data protection law on the books, HIPAA is based on the reasonableness principle.

esides great customer service, sales and marketing, investing in one’s community falls under the recipe for a successful business. The impact garnered by giving back can result in both tangible and intangible benefits to a business.

When it comes to the Santa Clarita Valley’s health care industry, Kaiser Permanente and Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital have established themselves as the area’s leading providers, much of which officials attribute to how they provide for the community.

Whether talking about the area’s longest-serving health care provider or the nation’s largest health care consortium, these entities have seen direct results and major benefits to the Santa Clarita Valley through their efforts to work with others to expand local outreach, programs and services.

KAISER PERMANENTE Since opening its doors in Santa Clarita in 1994, Kaiser Permanente has built a strong base and support system in the SCV, with a team of more than 120 physicians and about 230 employees. Its expansion to help save patients the drive to the San Fernando Valley and provide specialty care services became a reality earlier in 2018, when the healthcare provider opened the new Santa Clarita Medical Office 2.

The new building was designed to enable improved connectivity with physicians using advanced technology, such as video consultations, remote check-ins via the Kaiser app and push notifications to avoid the waiting room.

This is a form of community investment that “ensures the city of Santa Clarita to be a leader in supporting a healthy community and a healthy economy,” Troy Hooper, 2018 chairman of the Chamber said.

a large network that directly impacts the community. Grants and outreach programs also play a big role.

Dr. Stephen DeVita, assistant area medical director at Kaiser and SCV resident, said that as a nonprofit healthcare provider, its mission is to deliver high-quality, affordable services, “but the overall vision is to make the community healthier.”

Besides services and health plans, DeVita said planting grants in areas with needs is one way to create a stronger, healthier community.

In 2018, more than $62 million was given to organizations such as Samuel Dixon Family Health Center for a diabetes prevention program, the Boys & Girls Club of SCV to fund healthy lifestyle activities and Carousel Ranch for its equestrian therapy and physical exercise activities for children with special needs.

Kaiser also provides financial support by sponsoring a series of programs and events throughout the year that promotes a healthy lifestyle, according to hospital spokeswoman Chelsi Schriver.

Among those include the city of Santa Clarita’s Final Mile Marathon Challenge, where staff has worked with more than 2,000 elementary and middle school students over the course of two months to complete the marathon. For the 2016 Special Olympics World Games, the health

care provider offered medical care for athletes, as well as sponsoring events such as the Healthy Families & Youth Sports Festival, LA84 swim meets and the Santa Clarita Marathon’s Kid’s Fitness Challenge.

To prepare today’s youth as tomorrow’s leaders, DeVita said topics such as healthy eating, literacy, bullying, conflict management and STD prevention are offered at local school districts through Kaiser’s educational theatre program, which offers free assemblies, parent workshops and materials.

“Giving back in all these ways goes with our philosophy and that’s how do we really deliver great care?” said DeVita. “We have to walk the talk.”

HENRY MAYO Much like Kaiser Permanente, Henry Mayo is a not-for-profit community hospital known for its diverse list of services and strong system of physicians with expertise in more than 70 specialties.

The hospital and trauma center also supports investing in its community through new facilities. Set to open in 2019, Henry Mayo will add up to 142 patient beds, medical and surgical rooms, private rooms with restrooms and a Women’s Services Unit to meet the growing needs of See HEALTH, page 8

s we launch into 2019, now may be the time to consider financing for your business. Again, SBA 7(a) loans can be

used by qualifying borrowers to purchase or renovate or refinance real estate. These loans can also be used for acquiring fixed assets, restructuring current debt, working capital and in some cases, can even be used to fund the acquisition of a new business.

SBA 7(a) loans and other types of specialized lending make it possible for qualified businesses to get the financing they need, often times with much more flexible terms than more conventional loan options.

the SCV population. The new building is estimated to care for about “hundreds of thousands,” or about 10,000 patients per year, according to Roger Seaver, Henry Mayo president and chief executive officer.

“For over 40 years, Henry Mayo has been on a journey to provide outstanding patient care for our community,” said Don Kimball, chairman of the Henry Mayo Board of Directors, at the groundbreaking

event in late 2016. “This new tower will allow us to expand our health care services and provide an even better experience for our patients.”

As a not-for-profit organization, Patrick Moody, director of public relations and community engagement, said the team at Henry Mayo understands the importance of giving back in a variety of ways, not only in hospital services and in providing financial assistance to uninsured patients.

“A lot of what we do to give back is around education and awareness to empower people to take the steps

necessary to improve their own health,” he said. “We consider a nonprofit hospital is not just to care for those here, but to keep people healthy so they can lead healthy lives.”

To offer the right services needed by the community, Henry Mayo invests in conducting thorough health assessments every three years, including the creation of a plan to address each need. In 2016, the study revealed 10 significant health needs, which included access to health care, cancer, asthma and mental health and diabetes.

With diabetes listed among the top five, Moody said the hospital launched a prevention program last year intended for prediabetic individuals to learn how to modify their lifestyle. For heart disease, Henry Mayo offers cardiovascular programs and hosts heart health fairs where people can have their glucose tested, meet with experts and even sign up for the annual Santa Clarita Heart Walk. The same goes for cancer, where the public has access to multiple free events to learn, for example, genetic risk factors and dietary changes to help prevent cancer.

hen Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital broke ground on its new patient tower in October 2016, hospital leaders envisioned a building that would meet the growing health care needs of the Santa Clarita Valley community.

Construction crews can be seen hustling up and down the six-story, 160,000-square-foot patient tower trying to avoid the steel beams, crisscrossing wires and exposed ventilation ducts that dot the premises working to make it a reality. As they bustle to finish the work that must be done before the building can open to patients, hospital officials are excited about its opening scheduled for summer 2019.

Travel up the construction elevator to the second floor and — at this time next year — you’ll be standing in the Center for Women and Newborns, which will feature nearly 30 added beds, two dedicated cesarean section operating rooms and much more, said Jenn Castaldo, the hospital’s vice president and chief nursing officer who cited the renovation to the hospital’s maternity services as one of the more important upgrades underway at the Henry Mayo Newhall Patient Tower.

“Certainly, one of the most important things for the hospital and our community is our upgrade to our women’s services,” Castaldo said, because it’s vital for expecting mothers to experience childbirth in an environment that promotes healing, wellness and is really focused on family centered care, which is what the improvements will provide.

Every aspect of the new patient tower will feature accommodations that aim to increase the level of comfort experienced by a patient, expecting mother or their family, Castaldo said.

“Most patients when they are expecting to deliver a child really think about the comfort and amenities,” Castaldo said. “That’s what we want to provide, so it’s really more like a spa, healing, warm environment,” where laboring women can forget that they’re in a hospital setting.

according to hospital staff.

This means some women will now be able to grab a sandwich in the expanded cafeteria area or have the chance to monitor their baby wirelessly while they perform everyday tasks like showering, Castaldo said, adding the hospital will still be able to ensure that patients get the quality emergency services, sophisticated technology and highest levels of hospital care during a patient’s stay.

The blood bank on the first floor will be a vital service for all patients and programs housed in the tower, according to Castaldo, and the 30 new licensed medical and surgical units will feature overnight sleep accommodations so family members can stay by their loved one’s side.

The hospital will also have its very first OB-ED, which will be used to deliver a high level of emergency care should an unlikely event occur, Castaldo said. “Every minute counts when an infant is struggling,” which is why it’s helpful to have the services in such a close and adjacent proximity.

“It’s really about bringing that birthing — and suite — experience into the acute care setting so that you have the beauty of them both,” Castaldo said. “You’ll have the highgrade technology that you’d need if

there’s an emergency situation,” but you’ll also have the serenity, freedom and choice that families look for when deciding where they will host their birthing experience, she added.

The best part is patients won’t even know that most of the emergency care exists within the setting because it’s functioning in the background, Castaldo said. “And that’s the whole point, right? Women don’t want to worry about this stuff in labor and we want that to be the furthest thing from their mind, as well,” which is why the hospital is investing so much into the wellness experience.

“They may never want to leave.

It’s going to be so lovely,” Castaldo said, mentioning the lotion bar and other amenities that will be available. “But we also really want to hear from the women of our community so we can see what other types of things patients may want.

It’s all about pampering and privacy and making families are part of the experience.”

It’s the little details that count, Castaldo said. “There has been a great deal of thought and care put into that when constructing this facility.”

M

ost of us are less than completely honest with our doctors, according to a new study.

The study found that 60 percent to 80 percent of those surveyed admitted to withholding information that could be important to their health during doctor visits.

It’s hard to admit we’re not living a healthy lifestyle. So it’s no surprise to find that many of us are not completely truthful about our diets and the amount of exercise we’re getting.

But when are patients least likely to be forthright? Some people tend not to speak up when they disagree with a doctor’s advice. Others admit that they stay quiet when they don’t understand directions given by their doctor.

WHAT HOLDS US BACK FROM BEING COMPLETELY HONEST? A majority of people say that they don’t want to be judged or lectured by their doctors. Additional reasons include: not really wanting to hear how bad their health behaviors are; feeling embarrassed; not wanting the doctor to think they are a difficult patient; and not wanting to take too much of the doctor’s time.

HONESTY IS THE BEST POLICY Doctors don’t always get the information they need, which lends credence to the conventional belief that doctors may need to adjust what patients tell them. For example, a doctor might want to include doubling a patient’s report of alcohol use and cutting in half the amount of reported exercise.

But misleading your doctor can bring serious health consequences. Your doctor needs to know what you’re eating and

what medication you’re taking in order to help you with health problems. They need to understand your symptoms, thoughts and feelings to make proper diagnoses and treatment recommendations.

Now that we know the common reasons why many people are not completely honest about their health, let’s vow to start off our New Year right by telling our docs the whole truth. It could really help in the long run.

SANTA CLARITA’S WORKWELL PROGRAM OFFERS MORE THAN JUST BENEFITS

aid vacation time? Check.

Health insurance? Check.

Retirement plan? Check.

There’s no doubt that the city of Santa Clarita offers its employees a stable benefits package. But with many more companies improving their focus on perks, the city has revamped a program that’s helping its staff in more direct and effective ways.

Listed under additional employee benefits, the city offers WorkWell, a program that strives to “create a productive and performance-driven workplace by helping employees reach their personal health and fitness goals.”The program offers informational and interactive sessions that focus on four major points: financial wellness, stress reduction, exercise programs and healthy eating.

Experts in different fields are invited to lead information sessions on each focus point, which rotates every quarter from January to December, to share their knowledge, said Joe Oerum, clerk and contract services manager with the city, who co-chairs the program.

A WorkWell committee, with subcommittees for each topic, meet monthly and strategize what will be offered to staff depending on their needs and goals. “(WorkWell) got revamped about two years ago to better work with employees’ input,” said Michael

After hearing back from multiple participants, WorkWell leaders have held information sessions on how to save for retirement, operated weightloss challenges and healthy cookoffs.

Local businesses donate their time to lead activities. Ryan Arditty with The Brandolino Group and Keith Renno with WinTrust Mortgage have recently collaborated.

One of the most successful sessions was on how to buy a house, which resulted in a handful of employees receiving the keys to their very first home.

“I had been considering buying a home for some time,” said project technician Christine Saunders.

“After attending a workshop hosted

by WorkWell to learn more about the home l-buying process, I felt like I had a much better understanding

of the steps I would need to take to move forward. It definitely gave me the confidence boost I needed to take the plunge.”

In June, WorkWell partnered with Afterburn Fitness and organized a fitness challenge to help employees not only set a goal but keep their healthy habits building throughout the journey.

“After the challenge was complete, I didn’t want to stop because I was feeling better and more confident in my ability to keep up with the regulars at the gym,” said Evelyn Glasgow, an administrative analyst with the city. “Seven months later and 20 pounds lost, I still get up at 3:30 a.m., Monday through Friday, to work out.”

WorkWell’s success stems from the testimonials by those who participate, said Villegas. “It’s a good program and it is also self-funded. We raise money through sponsorship

and businesses.”

Employees also partake in golf and softball tournaments for some friendly competition. But these company outings don’t just benefit Santa Clarita staff.

“On top of helping employees reach their goals, we send out surveys to select a nonprofit to support them,” said Oerum. “Any items or donations that we collect goes to benefit a local organization.”

In September, more than 150 city staff traded a day at the office for a game of kickball, gathering donations that benefitted the Domestic Violence Center of SCV. Bridge to Home has also received help from WorkWell participants and this year, employees have selected the SCV Youth Project as the nonprofit of choice, according to Oerum.

“Whether it’s time, money or needed items like water, food or socks for organizations like Bridge to Home, we give back,” he said.

Volunteering or giving back, a nontraditional perk, has become increasingly popular among several companies. An October study

by Robert Half International Inc. showed that offering time for volunteer activities was among the top five perks that workers wanted.

“We learn each year what works and what doesn’t and what staff wants to learn about,” said Oerum.

“Overall, though, everyone benefits from WorkWell, whether it’s a 45-minute lunch session or a kickball tournament.” 

he Valley Industry Association is celebrating the new year with its first luncheon of 2019 on Jan. 29, featuring one of the Santa Clarita Valley’s corporations dedicated to attracting and growing the local business industry.

Starting at 11:45 a.m. at the Hyatt Regency Valencia, the event will bring together business leaders to learn about the SCV Economic Development Corp. Holly Schroeder, president and CEO of the

SCVEDC, is scheduled as the keynote speaker for the luncheon event.

“We are very excited to have [Schroeder],” said Kathy Norris, VIA president and CEO. “The event will be a good refresher to remind businesses of all the services that the SCVEDC provides.”

The event will aim to highlight incentives, cost-saving programs and other services the SCVEDC offers.

Schroeder will also share information on some of the companies that are expanding the SCV. “Growth is in our future and this presentation will give you the inside

scoop on who, where and when,” reads a prepared statement released

by VIA on the upcoming event.

According to the SCVEDC, a major function of their work is “to monitor the diverse issues facing businesses in our region and provide support to companies as they work through these issues.”

The cash flow report simply states the current bank balances, what additional monies are expected to be received that day; what payments are expected to clear that day and the expected cash on hand at the end of the day.

If cash on hand is increasing, things are good. If not, the leader needs to start investigating as to why payments are coming in slow and what is taking place with payables.

Leaders understand cash flow but don’t often realize the importance of tracking it every single day. Having a laser beam focus will soon become part of the company culture and will raise the level of awareness of employees about how important cash on hand is to the well being of the company.

The final piece of paper that I recommend belonging on the leader’s desk is a summary of the business goals for the year. This sheet should

have all of the current year goals highlighted; broken down by month, by department.

Every department should have between three and five concrete goals to accomplish before the end of the year.

NEW LAWS AFFECT HEALTH CARE COVERAGE

hile many Americans believe the opportunity to improve their health insurance coverage has passed, some Santa Clarita Valley residents may still be able to change their health insurance plans until as late as March, according to a recent interview with a representative from Heritage Sierra Medical Group of Santa Clarita.

The recent question-andanswer session offered helpful information for those who might need to know their options for enrollment in one of the most important expenses anyone can incur — their health insurance.

The information is critical to get out there, because it might give more options to those enrolled in plans who are over the age of 65.

“The annual enrollment period is the time of the year when people with Medicare can change their plans,” according to Pat Salas from Heritage Sierra, which has offices located on McBean Parkway in Valencia.

“The annual enrollment period starts every year on Oct. 15 and ends on Dec. 7 — with the changes in insurance coverage becoming effective Jan. 1,” Salas said. However, there is a new enrollment period — called OEP or open enrollment period — that Medicare beneficiaries could use.

“99 percent of elderly don’t know this is available for them,”

Salas said, but 2019 will feature a new period that will allow those with Medicare Advantage Plans to make changes or to improve upon their existing coverage options.

The open-enrollment period will run from Jan. 1 through March 31, 2019, according to Salas. “And anybody with a medicare Advantage plan qualifies,” so traditionally people over 65 are eligible.

“It existed a long time ago and then it went it away and now it’s been brought back,” Salas said, adding that it works in a really simple way.

“Basically, you have those three months to make one change to your current coverage, and whatever you choose, takes effect the next month and then you’re stuck with that until Dec. 31, 2019,” Salas said. “Then the Annual Enrollment Period starts again on Oct. 15 and the cycle restarts.”

Things can be confusing with Medicare, because there’s a lot of options out there for patients who qualify, Salas said, “but for more information, they can call us and happily find the answers to their questions.”

T

o help get our children through college without debt, my wife, Gaynor, and I took on part-time jobs to help pay for college.

I teach college on a Monday in Los Angeles and my wife works a couple of hours everyday with adults with learning disabilities — she oversees their work, rolling silverware at a local restaurant before it opens for business.

They get paid just 9 cents per roll but their contribution is priceless.

Gaynor has shared countless stories about these very “special” people. In turn, their stories have profoundly taught me lessons that we can all learn for the workplace.

Out of respect for their privacy, I’ll just use the first letter of their names.

“K” always arrives before they open the doors.

He walks to work, come rain or shine. He is very focused. “K” has never been absent from work. He doesn’t like idle chatter. Everyday he tries to do more than he did yesterday. The world says he has autism. My wife says he’s incredibly gifted. Can you imagine if every employee thought and behaved like him?

“A” is so caring — he loves to love, and loves being loved.

If my wife has to correct him for anything, he apologizes profusely and keeps repeating how much his parents love him. Can you imagine if every employee apologized when they messed up? I wonder how many of the problems we see in the workplace are because people didn’t feel as loved by their parents as “A” does? As parents, we have a noble and honorable responsibility to love on our children. Hurt people often hurt others.

It’s not surprising to me to see an increase in workplace violence with the decline in effective marriages and so many broken homes.

“D” is a big ball of fun.

He is always joyful — always optimistic and a real encourager of others. “D” can sense if the early morning kitchen staff are uptight

or angry. He always wants to calm them down and cheer them up.

Gosh, could our broken working world need more “D’s”? He has Down syndrome but my wife insists he has “Up syndrome” as he lifts everyone up.

“N” is by far the quietest of the group.

She doesn’t say much. “N” inspects her work very, very carefully. She is fixated on quality over quantity and doesn’t care if she makes less money for rolling fewer napkins. “N” believes the most important thing is spotless silverware, not her paycheck. Imagine if we had more employees like “N” — whose work standard we can rely upon and whose focus, is on the quality of their work rather than their paycheck.

“G” has been blessed with the talent of leadership — he rallies the group along.

He is very solution-minded. He sees possibilities, not barriers. The

average workplace could significantly benefit from leaders of such high character and high competence as “G”. He thinks about others much more than himself — what a radical idea for a leader, to think of others more than self.

I’d like to boast on my wife, Gaynor, for a few sentences.

When she first started overseeing this group, they were nowhere near as much of a team as they are now. They didn’t speak to each other. They had to be reminded of each other’s names everyday. They weren’t interested in each other. I’d like to humbly suggest my wife has been the glue that’s bonded them together. She works alongside them and helps them where necessary.

She doesn’t talk down to them but rather, she looks up to them.

When Gaynor speaks about these people, her face shines and her eyes get watery. Imagine if all supervisors cared as much about their direct reports as Gaynor does.

Our “normal” working world could learn so much from a field trip out to this local restaurant where a group of five individuals, labeled as “disabled” in the eyes of this fallen world, work together for about two hours every day for six days a week before most people are even awake.

So next time you unwrap your silverware, think about them— chances are here in “Awesometown” your napkin was rolled by “special” people just like them.
