We’re a staff training and leadership development company based here in Valencia. We launched in 2006 and have served over 215 clients across 28 states, China, India, Europe and Australia. We opened our first franchise a couple of years ago, based in Florida. We really listen to what our clients need and then we tailor a solution to help get them the significant and sustainable results they are searching for. We essentially help our clients bring out the best of their people.

You began writing a column for The Signal’s weekly Business page earlier this year. Why? We love living and working in Santa Clarita and so it was a small way of giving back to the local business community. I also think there’s so much baloney written about leadership, teamwork, time management and customer service, etc., that I wanted to bring some good, solid common-sense principles that sadly are just not commonly practiced.

What’s the most valuable lesson you’ve learned in your career?

That an employee can only make so much contribution based on their technical expertise. Over and above that, employees need to be able to manage themselves, influence others and have sharp business acumen. These three skills can help employees move across departments, industries and even rise to the top of their organization if that’s their aspiration.

If you could sound an alarm: What’s the one thing that too many managers, leaders and top executives are doing today that will come back to haunt them?

My observation has been that most managers, leaders and top executives are self-serving. Few of them genuinely have a spirit to serve. I believe that truly effective leaders turn the organizational pyramid upside-down. Their mindset is that they see themselves as being of service to their shareholders; their board of directors; their direct reports and their colleagues. Sadly, few leaders think and behave consistently as servant-leaders and this is what I believe is the root of the problem within most organizations — poor leadership.  Steve Kiggins SCVBJ Editor skiggins@signalscv.com

MASTERING CASH INFLOWS AND OUTFLOWS STEVE NUÑEZ

In a recent business seminar hosted by Mission Valley Bank, bank consultant Robert Dyck cited a statistic that 70 percent of businesses – large, mid, and small – fail due to cash flow problems.

With three main sources of cash flow activity – operating, investing, and financing – Dyck stressed how vital it is to understand and monitor cash flow in your business.

Michael Dell, founder of Dell Technologies, summed up his company’s lack of attention to cash inflows and outflows with an analogy: “We were always focused on our profit and loss statement. But, cash flow was not a regularly discussed topic.

It was as if we were driving along, watching only the speedometer, when in fact we were running out of gas.”

Cash flow is the movement of money into and out of a business.

It is a system of inflows – such as cash sales, receipts from debtors, sale of fixed assets, interest earned, grants, bank loans, and share capital invested – and outflows – payments to suppliers, wages and salaries, tax on profits, interest on loans and repayment, and dividends paid to shareholders to name a few.

In a perfect trading cycle, a business’ cash inflow would meet or outpace the timing of its outflow. Example, a business orders stock from a supplier with 75-day terms for payment. Production turns stock into product, which is held until a customer is found. If that process takes 45 days and the customer who purchased the product is given 30-day payment terms, then the customer’s receivable will flow into the business just in time for the stock supplier to be paid.

Not every business cycle or transaction goes as planned.

There are also outflows that are not as obvious. Sales that do not ultimately result in cash receipts are not sales, just outflows.

outflow. That’s why a watchful eye on cash flow is so important.

What should a business do when they recognize they have a cash flow issue? Convert cash quickly in your Accounts Receivable for inflow. Actions may include Accounts Receivable financing, making deposits daily, setting up a lock box at your bank to accept payments directly, invoice often and accurately, credit check buyers, accept credit

and debit cards, and set and enforce payment terms. Collect every Account Receivable and stop selling to past due accounts.

To manage outflows, get a handle on inventory and expenses. Excess inventory ties up cash so it’s best to reduce levels and sell obsolete inventory.

Other actions to reduce outflows may be to control purchasing authority and eliminate low or no profit accounts.

Using credit cards to pay Accounts Payable to slow the outflow is a quick and temporary fix.

If you find yourself in a negative cash flow situation, talk with your banker at the onset instead of waiting until it gets out of control. As a trusted advisor, your business banker is there to help.

LANFRANCO REJOINS SIGNAL AS ADVERTISING DIRECTOR STEVE KIGGINS SCVBJ Editor

rad Lanfranco is back at The Signal to complete a turn-back-the-clock leadership team built by Publisher R ichard Budman, who, in June, purchased the 99-year-old Santa Clarita Valley newspaper.

A familiar face in the local community for nearly three decades, Lanfranco on June 18 assumed the role of advertising director, a position he held from 2009-13, citing his relationship with Budman and his desire to help local businesses raise their profile through The Signal’s unique suite of professional services.

Lanfranco’s reappearance followed Tim Whyte’s return a week earlier as The Signal’s top editor, a position he held during Budman’s initial stint as publisher in the mid-2000s.

“I returned to The Signal because of the new publisher, R ichard Budman, and because I have always loved the local Santa Clarita Signal newspaper and The Signal website,” said Lanfranco, who has more than 25 years of leadership experience in a variety of industries, including media, and owns It’s a Grind Café in Castaic along with his wife, Lea. “I have known Budman for many, many years and he is a talented and experienced publisher and I am excited and humbled that he asked me to be a part of the new Signal team.”

In his new role, Lanfranco will oversee a growing team of multimedia sales professionals who work to help local businesses connect with customers through a variety of print products and on multiple digital platforms. The Signal’s service to the local community will expand in July to include a free Sunday news magazine.

The Signal will soon be recruiting for two additional sales 8

professionals to join the existing team of Maureen Daniels, Michael Madigan, Toni Sims and Peter Smith, Lanfranco said.

“The Signal is the No. 1-most viewed local news/media site and the new Sunday Signal Magazine will be directdelivered to 70,000 homes, giving us a penetration rate in the community of more than 90 percent. In addition, we have an incredible team of multimedia experts in digital and video production, and we have creative artists who can design exciting ad campaigns in any format for any Santa Clarita business to assist in taking their business to the next level,” Lanfranco said. “There is no other local product in the Santa Clarita Valley that can deliver the customer penetration rate that we can.”

A veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps, Lanfranco has been active in multiple community organizations, including Rotary, the Elks Lodge and the SCV Chamber of Commerce.

Also, Lanfranco in January won special election for a seat on the Castaic Area Town Council.

“I am very pleased to announce Brad as our new advertising director,” Budman said. “Brad brings us a lot of experience and community relations that will help us in reaching out to the business community.”

After leaving The Signal in 2013, Lanfranco worked 3 ½ years as a senior manager at the Ventura County Star. Since February 2017, Lanfranco has served as district manager for the non-partisan National Write Your Congressman program.

SUNSCREEN TIPS AND TRICKS FOR THE SUMMER MONTHS PATRICK MOODY

ith summer season upon us, a lot of us will be reaching for sunscreen.

But there's more to staying safe from the sun’s harmful rays than just slathering or spraying on sunscreen.

Here are some dos and don'ts from the American Academy of Dermatology and the Skin Cancer Foundation:

DO:

• Buy smart.

Sunlight consists of two types of harmful rays that reach Earth — ultraviolet A and B rays.

Look for broad-spectrum sunscreen, which protects against both types and helps prevent sunburns, early skin aging and skin cancer. It should have an SPF of 30 or higher. And it should also be water resistant — meaning it’s effective for up to 40 minutes in the water.

• Apply it generously.

Most people don't use enough.

Be the exception by applying about a palmful of sunscreen to any part of your body not covered by clothes. That’s a nickel-sized dollop on your face alone. If you're using a spray, apply it until your skin has an even sheen.

• Go ahead and use last summer's.

Sunscreens are required to retain their original strength for at least three years. Not sure when you bought yours? Look for an expiration date; some sunscreens include one. If it's passed, toss out the sunscreen.

There are also visible signs that the sunscreen may no longer be good, such as a change in color or consistency.

• Use it on cloudy days, too.

Even when it’s overcast, 80 percent of the sun’s rays can still reach your skin.

DON’T:

• Wait until you're in the sun before apply sunscreen.

The best practice is to apply sunscreen to dry skin 15 minutes before heading outdoors.

• Make it one and done.

Reapply sunscreen every two hours (or as often as the label says) and after swimming or sweating.

• Assume that a higher-number SPF lasts longer.

Sunscreens last the same amount of time regardless of their SPF number.

• Overlook other sun safeguards.

When you’re out in the sun, don’t rely solely on sunscreen to protect your skin. Wear pro-

tective clothing, such as a longsleeved shirt, pants, a widebrimmed hat and sunglasses.

And be a shade-seeker, too.

KIRSCH TAKES CHARGE AT HYATT REGENCY VALENCIA STEVE KIGGINS

he other day, Mark Kirsch was out front of the Hyatt Regency Valencia as a bellhop.

Over the Memorial Day weekend, Kirsch garnered a few odd glances from staffers as he bussed tables inside the hotel’s newly renovated restaurant.

He’s stripped beds and helped tidy guest rooms, too.

Those chores aren’t part of his job description as general manager of the Santa Clarita Valley’s most prominent hotel, the 244-room Hyatt on Town Center Drive, but Kirsch simply can’t help himself.

“I love serving people,” he said.

After nearly three decades in hospitality, Kirsch has joined Hyatt for the first time, adding to a resume that already includes work with the country’s two largest hotel chains, Marriott and Hilton. Prior to starting in Valencia in mid-May, Kirsch had been regional director of operations for Kentucky-based Lakshmi Narayan Hospitality Group, a position that entailed oversight of four hotel properties.

His move to Southern California was in the plans: His wife, Roxy, went to school in Los Angeles and wanted to come home again, plus one of his daughters will be schooling at UCLA. Another daughter plans to pursue an acting career.

And, coincidentally, Kirsch himself is a lifelong fan of the NFL’s Chargers, who played their inaugural season in L.A. in 2017 following a move from San Diego.

“It’s just amazing that Valencia popped up (on the job boards),” he said.

Kirsch added, “This is going to be home. I’m not just passing through.”

On the job, Kirsch said he will focus on creating a rich and positive culture – for his staff and the hotel’s guests – and strive to network within the Santa Clarita business community to both foster existing partnerships and build new relationships.

Also, Kirsch will play an integral role in the Hyatt Regency’s 20th anniversary celebration set for October. The event will also mark the completion of a top-to-bottom, multi-million makeover that began earlier this year.

Of his management style, Kirsch said, “If you take care of your people, they’ll take care of your guests.”

The Hyatt’s level of service will be important for another reason, too: “The way (our guests are) treated by us will likely be what they remember about Santa Clarita,” he said. “It’s important that we put our best foot forward every time somebody comes into the hotel.”

WHAT’S WORKING AND WHAT’S NOT WORKING?

ast week marked the end of the first half of 2018. It feels, it seems, like January was just last week.

Someday scientists will actually discover that as we grow older, time actually passes faster because that is how it is in our brains.

The first few weeks of July are appropriate to look back and look ahead; review, refresh and renew.

You can do it for your business -- and you should do it for your life, too.

Plenty of time remains to achieve goals established at the end of last year, but strategies and tactics may need adjustment.

I have always been in favor of using a simple system to avoid confusion and to maintain focus.

Most companies do a version of “What’s Working and What’s Not Working” but there are three more steps in the process to make it a more useful and valuable business tool.

The first step is to create a list of those things that the organization is currently doing, and has been doing, well.

This is the ‘What’s Working’ list. Starting the assessment by thinking of the positives provides a sense of accomplishment, a feeling of success and helps everyone involved to reflect back on all the hard work expended in the first six months of the year.

While this assessment is a leadership responsibility, it would be wise to have your managers go through this exercise with their teams. It can be invaluable as a validation tool, a morale booster and a team-building exercise.

Be generous with the list; add every success, large or small. In my mind, the bigger the list, as long as it is accurate, the better.

The second step is to list those things that are not working. Usually a few things jump onto the list without much thought; strategies that are not generating desired results, client losses, and internal processes that aren’t as efficient or effective as they need to be.

Taking the time to openly and freely assess and think beyond the surface for things that go on this list is critical.

Often, a major item on this list when freely discussed will reveal additional, as important, items requiring remedial action.

For example, cash flow might be something that is immediately put on the ‘What’s Not Working’ list. However, it may only the tip of the iceberg so subjects related to cash 14

flow should also be listed, such as collections, clients and costs.

Additional thinking leads to the third step in the exercise, which is “Why Isn’t It Working.” This step looks at each item on the not working list to peel it back to the root causes.

The initial response to weak cash flow might be “the economy is slowing down” or “we have customers that can’t afford us otherwise they would pay our invoices.”

Looking at the issue deeper will reveal any number of causes.

Invoices may be late going out. The invoices could be incorrect, and the customers aren’t paying until the right one is received. No one is calling to make sure that invoices have been received. Invoices may be mailed when the customer prefers to receive them another way. A new employee, not well trained, may have been assigned to collections and they do not feel comfortable making the necessary calls.

All of these and many other underlying reasons could be the source of having cash flow that doesn’t work. Until the root causes are revealed nothing will change. Assumptions don’t cut it; facts are required.

The fourth step in the process is to make a list of “What’s Next.” This is the Corrective Action Plan created from the entire process.

Those things that are working will likely want to be continued, but perhaps adjusted for greater success.

What isn’t working will need to be prioritized for the company.

Specific action steps need to be captured, individual responsibility assigned along with due dates and reporting guidelines issued.

The final step belongs to you.

You need to use the Corrective Action Plan created as the template for business improvement.

This is the true test of leadership: Holding people accountable to improve the condition of the business they work in.

IS YOUR WEBSITE ADA COMPLIANT?

re you prepared to pay $100,000 in attorneys’ fees for your business’ discriminatory website?

That’s exactly what happened to Floridabased supermarket chain Winn-Dixie when a legally blind customer filed suit because he was unable to fully utilize the company’s website, which was incompatible with the customer’s screen reader software.

As a result of the decision in Gil v. Winn-Dixie, (S.D. Fla., slip op. June 12, 2017) numerous other states, including California, have seen a steady increase in the filings of these types of cases.

The ADA, or Americans with Disabilities Act, was signed into law in 1990 and in 2008 underwent significant modifications through the ADA Amendments Act of 2008 expanding the definition of “disability.”

Title III of the ADA prohibits businesses from discriminating against customers “on the basis of disability in the full and equal enjoyment of the goods, services, privileges, advantages, or accommodations of any place of public accommodation.” A “place of public accommodation” is defined as private entity whose operation affects commerce and meets other enumerated categories. Importantly, where a website is integrated with store locations (eg: customers can purchase items online, search for store locations, etc.), courts have found the website to be a service of a public accommodation and therefore covered by the ADA. Nat’l Fed’n of the Blind v. Target Corp., (N.D. Cal. 2006).

In Gil v. Winn-Dixie, the court ultimately held that Winn-Dixie’s website was inaccessible to visually impaired individuals who must use screen reader software. Therefore, Winn-Dixie was found to have violated the ADA because its website denied the plaintiff from the “full and equal enjoyment of the goods, services, facilities, privileges, advantages, or accommodations that Winn-Dixie offers its sighted customers.”

The court ordered Winn-Dixie to modify its website to be congruent with current guidelines set forth under the WCAG (Web Content Accessibility Guidelines) 2.0 published by the Web Accessibility Initiative of the World Wide Web Consortium, and later awarded Gil’s attorneys over $100,000 in fees and costs for bringing the suit.

n early June, the Santa Clarita Valley Business Journal brought together five executives from companies in five different professional services industries to discuss their particular businesses and workplace issues common to all businesses. Attending the roundtable were: John Shaffery, a founding partner at Poole & Shaffery law firm; Tamara Gurney, president and CEO of Mission Valley Bank; Lindahl Lucas, president of Lucas Insurance Services; Gary Saenger, president of Saenger Associates executive search firm and Heather Harbo, partner at Condie, Thomas & Harbo CPAs.

BEST ADVICE What is the single best piece of advice that has been given to you in your career?

HARBO: Gary Condie has been my mentor throughout my entire career. His advice is “client services” are most important. Keep your clients happy. Handle the work that they don’t want to deal with so they can focus on their businesses. Take the weight of financial reporting and taxes off their shoulders. That’s what I enjoy doing most—client work.

SAENGER: We do retained executive recruiting. Best piece of advice: In any meeting make a difference. If you have an opinion about how you can make that organization or organization better, speak up.

LUCAS: I’ve owned an insurance company in Santa Clarita since 1989.

I am constantly evolving as a person, as an employer. I think we’ve all had to change since the internet popped up. Our world has been shaken up. I always remember this quote: “Knowledge is learning from your mistakes, wisdom is learning from the mistakes of others.”

GURNEY: Don’t believe the people who tell you that you can’t do it.

SHAFFERY: I’m one of the founding partners of Poole & Shaffery. We like to think of ourselves as the law firm for your business. The best piece of advice came from my father. He shared two rules: the customer is always right and if you believe the customer is ever wrong, re-read rule No. 1.

-Gary Saenger CUSTOMER SERVICE We’re all busier than ever before, so how can you still maintain a high level of customer service?

LUCAS: Communication. A client might not be happy but if we keep communicating, we may be able to resolve it.

SAENGER: Communication and being available on their (the clients’) terms not when my office hours happen to be.

HARBO: Communication at our firm I don’t know whether it is old school but we like to pick up the phone and talk to our clients. We want to make sure that they’re getting that individualized attention that they are paying for. Some little reminders we can still do by email. I find that our clients do appreciate those phone calls. We still do a lot of face to face especially with the aging clients. They like to sit and talk to you. A lot of millennials will even text me their tax documents.

WORKPLACE CULTURE With more millennials in the work force how has that changed workplace culture?

SHAFFERY: One of the best companies to work for is right here in Santa Clarita—Scorpion (web site developer with many young employees). One of the things I noticed when I went there was there is this room with all these boxes. But this company doesn’t actually make a product. What are they shipping off? So I asked the receptionist and they said that all the employees use the company’s address to have things shipped there because they’re not at home, they’re working. And then I looked to my right and there’s a basketball courtl. So it’s a little bit different.

You have to remember that millennials are your customers.

They are making decisions. They are in charge of procurement and how they are going to find you, learn about you and validate you is different. We would not have considered the internet 3 to 5 years ago as a source of new business. Now we embrace it fully.

GURNEY: Millennials aren’t out there looking for jobs in banking. We have to figure out how to sell it to them. Some millennials come in at entry-level positions and it’s run the gamut from the ones that everybody jokes about walking in a half hour late and wonder why everybody’s upset to others who are extremely conscientious.

RECRUITMENT Is everybody fighting to get the right candidate to fill positions?

LUCAS: In business insurance it really takes a knowledgeable educated person with many years of experience to take a look at someone’s business and make sure they’re covered properly. Insurance is not sexy, people just don’t say “hey I want to become an insurance agent.” The people I might need may be living in L.A. They don’t want to come to Santa Clarita.

SHAFFERY: I think the workers are here (in Santa Clarita).

Right now in hiring, it’s a buyer’s market. We’re looking for a lawyer and there’s not that many of them out there. They are working and the economy is doing well and lawyers are in demand. We have had people who are single living in other areas and working up here just wasn’t their cup of tea. Whereas those who are starting a family or who have a younger family they come up here and they think it is the best thing ever.

HARBO: Our firm has had pretty good success in hiring interns. When they’re an intern they get a good taste of what the accounting and tax worlds are really like and if we really like them and it seems to be a good fit we will offer them a position.

Of course we have to train but some of them have turned out to be good, long-term employees.

SUCCESSES, CHANGES What is your biggest success so far this year and what changes are you working through at your company?

LUCAS: I’ve set up my office where I have personal lines and commercial lines departments and I’ve started an investment advisory firm. I’ll also be teaching investments at UCLA. GURNEY: I don’t know where 17 years has gone. That’s how long the bank has been open. I get examiners come in and one of the major topics is what is your succession plan? I’ve thought about it but I never thought I’d be at an age where I would have to consider retiring. I look around at who is going to be sitting in this chair 15 or 17 years from now. That’s a conversation I’ve had with my team this past year. We’re building the bench and looking at human capital and who we are going to bring in and build up into key positions. Also how can we automate as much as we can to keep expenses down. High touch supported by high tech is the only way in this day and age for a community bank to stay in business.

There are so many mergers and acquisitions right now that the only way for a little bank like us to stay relevant is to grow assets through acquiring other banks or expanding your geography.

So I look to ancillary products that complement what we do in our core business. We’ve gotten into merchant acquiring. I don’t think there are any small banks in the country that do this.

What is the most common misperception about your industry?

HARBO: As a CPA we have that perception that we’re just

pencil pushers, that we just fill out forms and do after-thefact reporting. In reality, that’s the tip of the iceberg. We’re doing management advisory services. We’re doing planning. We’re helping our clients establish their businesses, forming entities, individualizing what they are doing, assessing what state they’re in. We give them direction. We do retirement planning, we do estate planning and a lot of consulting.

SHAFFERY: Being a lawyer comes down to one thing: standing up to do the right thing. Our focus is to make sure businesses do the right thing. We want businesses to succeed. In order for them to succeed we want to lower their risk—to make sure they get good advice on how they do their business. We’re here to make sure businesses have a solid foundation. It’s a good profession. Law school admissions are up.

GURNEY: In the (economic) crisis “bank” became a fourletter word. And Wells Fargo brings it to the forefront again.

People think bankers are greedy. The whole thing in banking is the relationship—how we can better serve the client and if we can’t we should show them the bank that they should be going to. In the recession we stuck with a lot of our loan clients who were struggling badly. We launched an accounts receivable product and that worked really well through that period.

LUCAS: People think insurance companies are just taking your money. It’s an intangible product. We’re selling you peace of mind. What I’m doing is protecting your most valuable assets--your children, your business that you started. When your house burns down insurance covers everything.

SAENGER: When we take an executive search we want to be sure we have two winners--the company that has the job and pays the fee and the candidate that has become the chosen one.

We want to be that internal consultant for the client and tell them the truth. If there’s that elephant in the room we want to talk about that.  -Jason Schaff 19

proclaims Niner, the company’s vice president, as he sweeps his right arm into the air toward the bustling production facility. He’s not kidding. Workers at CGS specialize in creativity, whether it’s signage, wallcoverings, decals, window displays or vehicle wraps, for commercial clients and resellers.

Some projects are completed on massive roll-to-roll printers – the company’s newest, purchased in 2016, cost some $900,000 – while others are done the old-fashioned way – with needle and thread.

The Super Bowl, as it is for the NFL’s 32 teams – is the company’s big game. It was 1989, Niner says, when Ron Niner, Jim’s father and the company’s founder, received the call that changed everything.

“They needed a company to cut thick foam letters,” Jim says. The jobs grew from there to include all guest-facing displays for the annual title game, including stadium entrances, as well as the commissioner’s tailgate party.

For the 2018 Super Bowl staged in Minneapolis, won by the Philadelphia Eagles, 41-33 over the New England Patriots, CGS developed “a million and a half square feet of fun,” Niner says.

If you’re wondering: That’s about 30 football fields.

The company’s work with the NFL has since led to projects for the MLB and NHL all-star festivities, too, and that work has helped spur CGS’ growth. The company, now with 33 employees, has recently opened a second office in Jersey City, near New York City, to further expand its national footprint.

“When I used to order lunch, it was 12, maybe 15. We’ve doubled,” says Malerie McCalla, a Saugus High School graduate who began as a receptionist but has since been promoted to the company’s marketing office.

Minimum Wage Increases in the Santa Clarita Valley

ne issue facing local companies today is the minimum wage increase at both the state and county levels.

Many business leaders have approached us with questions and concerns about the impact that these increases will have on their companies and how best to implement them.

PARDEE HOMES PLANS FALL OPENING FOR SKYLINE IN SANTA CLARITA

P

ardee Homes will celebrate a fall grand opening for its new Skyline community in Santa Clarita. Grand opening will feature model homes for the first four new home collections, by Pardee Homes and TRI Pointe Group.

Skyline is planned for 1,220 detached homes.

THE NEIGHBORHOODS

Debut neighborhoods will offer an array of design choices, created in concert with award-winning architectural firms, according to Dave Little, president of Pardee Homes’ Los Angeles Ventura Division.

“Skyline’s new homes offer distinctive, flexible designs for diverse, knowledgeable homebuyers,” Little said. “All homes will also deliver well-researched, progressive smart home measures that can help buyers boost their new home’s performance, efficiency, comfort and convenience.”

• Sola by Pardee Homes will provide designs of approximately 1,864 to 2,225 square feet of living space in two-story floorplans with 3 to 4 bedrooms and 2.5 to 3 baths, in Spanish and Farmhouse styles.

• Lyra by Pardee will offer two-story designs of approximately 2,861 to 3,509 square feet of living space, 4 to 7 bedrooms and 2.5 to 5 baths.

• Celestia by TRI Pointe offers two-story designs with approximately 2,001 to 2,596 square feet of living space, with 3 to 5 bedrooms and 2.5 to 4.5 baths, in Spanish, Ranch and Farmhouse styles.

• Mystral by TRI Pointe rounds out Skyline’s choices. Two-story designs provide about 2,600 to 2,973 square feet of living space, with 3 to 4 bedrooms and 3 baths, in Spanish, Ranch and Farmhouse styles.

THE COMMUNITY PLAN

Skyline occupies approximately 2,173 hilltop acres. About 80 percent of this is dedicated open space, reflecting Pardee’s steadfast commitment to quality planning, according to Little.

“Sustainability goes beyond green and smart home measures we incorporate in individual homes,” Little said. “At Skyline, we are reusing rock unearthed during grading, devoting tons of this material to road base and landscape design elements.

“We’re also using water-efficient drip irrigation, which is not typically found with master-plan concepts,” he said. “And we preserved the site’s native plants, relocating them during construction so that we can now reintroduce them to their habitat.”

Walkability further highlights Skyline’s sustainability. Residents will be within walking distance of the new elementary school, and to parks, trails and internal recreational and social amenities.

Skyline’s location puts residents close to freeways and Metrolink, easing commutes to area employment hubs. Skyline is also well connected to Santa Clarita’s work centers, retail, dining and leisure choices.

VIA in Action: VIA Joins BRITE Coalition to Improve California’s Energy Infrastructure VIA joins a broad coalition committed to building a safer, stronger California by upgrading the energy grid, updating laws, and improving public safety investment.

Last year was california’s worst wildfire year on record, including two of the most destructive fire disasters in our state’s history. In the wake of these events, there’s a stunning new reality: this is the new normal for california, according to the BRIte coalition, a collection of stakeholders committed to building a resilient infrastructure for today’s economy.

BRIte, which stands for “Building Resilient Infrastructure for tomorrow’s economy,” recognizes california’s energy infrastructure was developed more than a century ago. And while it has served users well – providing reliable energy that is the backbone of our economy – it is time for major improvements that reflect the new normal. Failure to take bold action threatens the entire state’s economy, putting hundreds of thousands of jobs at risk.

Working with the Governor and bipartisan legislative leaders to find solutions, the coalition endeavors to ensure utility and public infrastructure is designed, constructed and operated to maximize resiliency to extreme weather events and natural disasters; vegetation and forest management practices are modernized for fire prevention and carbon sequestration; and liability rules and regulations for utility services are updated in light of the changing climate and the increased severity and frequency of weather events.

“The coalition is working to preserve healthy, stable public and investor-owned utilities and to ensure they continue to play their vital role in powering the world’s fifth largest economy,” said vIA vice chair Advocacy chris Schrage with LBW Insurance and Financial Services. “vIA is proud to work with BRIte members from across california to find solutions that protect good jobs and keep communities like ours safe.”

How did you end up on the other side of the camera?

I had great success as an actor out of college. Acting has been my passion my whole life and it continues to be a passion of mine, but I have always loved the complete process of making films. There’s such a great sense of accomplishment in creating the shots and then editing them together into a story that moves people. After I got married and decided to start a family, I realized that I could give my family much more stability if, rather than hoping that someone picked me to be in their film or commercial, I got behind the camera and made films that people were interested in paying for. Filming weddings, events and corporate films has given me the freedom to raise a family and continue pursuing my love for acting in between projects. My acting background serves me well because it’s given me the ability to bring energy and fun to every film set I’m on. I love it, at the end of a long day of filming, when my clients thank me for a great shoot even though they haven’t seen a single frame of what we've shot. Making it a more fun and memorable experience for everyone is a big part of our brand.

Your company, Matrimony Films, has built a sterling reputation for wedding videography. But that’s not all you do. How can you be of service to businesses and other professionals?

I have been making corporate films now for about five years and with social media and video becoming such a big part of corporate websites, businesses have realized the power of a well-made corporate film and that’s what we deliver. About a year ago, I became one of 12 companies sponsored nationally by Panasonic. They made me a Panasonic Lumix Ambassador and that has really jump-started the company. I not only make films for Panasonic, but they send me out across the country to teach other filmmakers how to make more compelling films. Several companies have noticed us from this and we now are telling great stories for YouTube channels and making Instagram videos and corporate messaging for companies like Union Bank, Xprotex and Promediagear.

Words are great. So are photos. There is a distinct power in video, though. Why? There’s something about a great film with great audio that just puts us right in the moment we're watching. Not often does someone cry from looking at a photograph, but almost every meaningful family film we make, we get tears, laughter and we move people. We take great care in the music we choose and through very skillful editing and great live audio moments, we help the people watching our films feel like they are living these moments all over again.

Look into your crystal ball, say, five years into the future: What’s your company look like?

In five years, I see our corporate brand growing by leaps and bounds. It's been predicted that, by 2019, video content will be the driving factor behind 85 percent of the search traffic in the United States. THE COSTS OF UNTREATED HEARING LOSS

ccording to a 2011 national study by the Better Hearing Institute (BHI), people with untreated hearing loss lose as much as $30,000 in annual income. As a result, the cost to U.S. taxpayers could be as much as $26 billion in unrealized federal tax collections.

The BHI study included over 40,000 households and showed that the use of hearing aids can reduce the risk of income loss by 90-100 percent for those with milder hearing loss, and from 65-77 percent for those with severe to moderate hearing loss.

The executive director of BHI, Sergel Kochkin, Ph.D., commented in a press release, “More than 34 million Americans suffer from hearing loss. Roughly 60 percent of them are in the workforce. Our study showed that when hearing loss is left unaddressed, it can pose significant barriers to productivity, performance, career success, and also to lifelong earnings.”

There is extensive research concerning the impact of hearing loss on quality of life. When we talk of quality of life, healthy hearing per se is not just to enhance aesthetic pleasure of acoustic sounds in a person’s environment.

Indeed, hearing loss has been shown to negatively

impact nearly every dimension of the human experience including physical health, emotional and mental health, perceptions of mental acuity, social skills, family relationships, self-esteem not to mention work and school performance.

The loss in income for people with untreated hearing loss due to underemployment is estimated at $176 billion, according to the BHI study. The study also showed that there is a strong relationship between the degree of hearing loss and unemployment for those who do not use hearing aids. Those with severe hearing loss had a 15.6 percent unemployment rate, which is double that of the normal-hearing population (7.8 percent) and nearly double that of their peers (8.3 percent) who use hearing aids.
