Vista Canyon Park Opens in Canyon Country

I

n what is now the city’s 36th park open to residents, the city of Santa Clarita held a ribbon-cutting ceremony for its newest playground and recreation area at Vista Canyon on March 7.

The 11-acre park, named Vista Canyon Park, is located in the new development that bears the park’s name and is a car-optional and “sustainability-focused community” located adjacent to Highway 14 on Lost Canyon Road.

It features a playground with sensory musical elements, three pickleball courts, two tennis courts, a full basketball court, an outdoor picnic gazebo and the Mitchell River House for event reservations.

The Mitchell River House is an homage to the Mitchell Family Adobe, the first home of pioneer Thomas Mitchell and his wife Martha and the first schoolhouse in the Santa Clarita Valley, Mayor Laurene Weste said during the event.

The new structure not only includes space for future events and social gatherings, but also a history of the land that it and the surrounding park are built on.

avorite Santa Clarita restaurants have come and gone over the years. However, a surprising number of “historic” SCV eateries remain. Make a date with history and sample the fare at any of these remaining landmarks.

Frank Paul Miccolis, a first-generation Italian-American, opened his first Chi Chi’s restaurant in Panorama City in 1958. In less than a decade he opened other locations in Saugus and Simi Valley. The Canyon Country location opened in 2000.

The chain, now 63 years old, is run by the founder’s son, Paul Miccolis.

When Chi Chi’s opened in Saugus there were few homes, just onion fields. However, the master planned community of Valencia was underway and tracks of new homes, soon followed.

Jerry Woods, first opened the Backwoods Inn in 1966. In 1968 Bob and Rose Ohler purchased the restaurant and the family still runs the eatery.

Fun fact: The china at the Backwoods Inn is Strawberry Hill by Syracuse, the same china used at Musso & Frank’s Restaurant in Hollywood.

The restaurant has been used for location shoots for “Charlie’s Angels (the original), “Starsky & Hutch,” “The Profiler” and “Criminal Minds,” among others.

The Aquatic Center Offers Cool Fun for Everyone Lessons, competitions and activities

N

estled off the main drag on the western edge of Canyon Country, you can find an oasis of wet fun, not only when the heat is on, but all through the year. Opened in 2003, the Santa Clarita Aquatic Center, at 20850 Centre Pointe Parkway, features a 50-meter competition pool, 25-meter diving pool and large “fun pool” that offers water play equipment and a huge water slide, and it has a zero-depth entry (walkin style, like a beach). There is ample parking and deck space, as well as locker rooms.

Depending on the pool and activity, of course, the Aquatic Center is open to all ages, though those 12 and under must be accompanied by an adult at all times. There are family programs, adult programs, youth programs, swimming lessons, American Red Cross safety programs and team sports offered at various times during the year.

Recreation Supervisor Aquatics Taryn Flatt said, “The Santa Clarita Aquatic Center offers programs and fun for the whole family. From swim

lessons for toddlers to competitive stroke instruction to water exercise classes, there is something available for everyone.”

“The city’s swim lessons are always popular and the Aquatic Center is proud to teach residents of all ages how to swim,” Flatt said. “Our staff can also help you determine which level of lessons will benefit you or your family member most.”

The Santa Clarita Aquatic Center will be offering American Red Cross learn-to-swim lessons May 9 through 20. These are offered on four levels, including Introduction to Water Skills, Fundamental Aquatic Skills, Stroke Development and Stroke Improvement.

Three Adult/Teen Learn to Swim classes are offered in May, which are conducted by a trained lifeguard.

You can work at your own pace.

Pre-registration is required online.

The Aquatic Center will offer Competitive Stroke classes April 11 through May 6. These will help you improve your strokes, turns and finishes. Level 4 swimming ability is required.

Reserved lap swims are offered at the Aquatic Center in one-hour sessions. Children ages 8 to 14 must be accompanied by an adult, in the water with them. All participants must be able to swim 25 yards continuously and may be asked to take a swim test. There are both reserved and drop-in sessions. Visit the website for details.

Both reserved and drop-in Recreational Swims are offered at various times. Participants must check in with the lifeguard, and must be 48 inches tall to go on the waterslide. Other rules apply. Visit the website for more details.

Water Exercise classes will be offered April 2 through May 31. There is no pre-registration, but you must purchase a Water Exercise Pass when you attend the first session. The cost depends on the number of classes you plan to attend.

The center hosts pick-up games of Adult Water Polo on Thursday nights. Bring your friends, but know that all swimmers must be able to swim 25 yards continuously, and may be asked to perform a swim test.

The Aquatic Center offers Underwater Hockey for ages 16 and up on Tuesday evenings April 5 through May 31. These coed and friendly competitions are great for cardio, and all equipment can be provided for you.

Distance challenges throughout the year, hosted by the 100 Mile Club. These have predetermined distances and completion dates, and prizes are awarded. The current challenge began on Feb. 1 and ends March 31.

Juan & Nita’s Bagnet-Silog Serves the Community

I

f you are in the mood to break out of your dining routine and try something different, say Filipino food, you have a couple local choices.

But if you would like that ethnic choice to go even further into deliciousness, consider Juan & Nita’s Bagnet-Silog located in the familiar mini-mall on Camp Plenty Road in Canyon Country.

Here, crispy, rich, seasoned and savory pork belly (bagnet) finds its way into many traditional Filipino dishes — and other tasty and imaginative recipes. And, the traditional Filipino breakfast of silog (rice with egg on top) finds its way into larger meals.

Envisioned, owned and managed

by Melvin Blanco, the dine-in or take out restaurant was named out of respect for Blanco’s father and mother.

“My father Juan was a mechanic at the U.S. Naval Base Subic Bay in the Philippines,” Blanco said, “and my mother Nita was an expert at cooking for our large family, friends and neighbors. Her dishes were very much looked forward to.”

Nita’s food was simultaneously a small business, labor of love and passion to give, as she would sometimes deliver meals to those who could not pay for them. And Blanco follows in her footsteps, particularly regarding our front-line workers.

“When we were closed for a few months, we were able to give more than 500 meals to various hospitals,”

he said. “On our first-year anniversary, we were able to give free meals to our front-liners to show our appreciation to them.

At the SCV Filipino-American Festival last year, we raised $2,300 to donate to front-liners in the Philippines.” And he added, “Last year, we donated drinks and doughnuts to the local Sheriff ’s and Fire departments.”

The frontline-related generosity is no coincidence. Blanco is an oncology/medical surgical nurse for Kaiser Permanente Panorama City Medical Center — but he has always invested in food businesses in the Philippines.

When they moved to Santa Clarita, Melvin Blanco and his wife Madelaine began to raise their family (a son and a daughter), but also wanted to open a Filipino restaurant in town.

Unfortunately, the pandemic hit two weeks before they were to do that, forcing them to switch from their original, more traditional menu to Chef Jake de Guzman’s mouthwatering incarnations of Blanco’s pork belly dreams.

Blanco said he puts pork belly into nearly everything he makes in some fashion, even dessert. And he noted that the downtime during the pandemic allowed him time to train his people “on what we were cooking.”

There are other non-traditional Filipino dishes, including the Cajun shrimp, which his wife loves, and a breaded and deep-fried jumbo squid that you get whole, served vertically on a metal rod rising from a wooden plank. “It’s calamari-style, but breaded,” he said.

Dishes are served all day, including silog, which includes beef, pork, fish or chicken and papaya salad, called atchara. “It’s a whole meal,” Blanco said.

Blanco said that traditional meals, such as pre-cooked turo-turo, aren’t offered because, “Chef Jake cooks each individual dish separately.” Dishes are often offered in two portion sizes, with the smaller portion feeding two to three, and the larger feeding four or more.

Bulalo ($25, serves three to four) is bone-in beef shank in a broth with cabbage and corn.

Pancit ($17, feeds two or three) is noodles cooked with garlic, onion, cabbage and carrots. Bagnet and shrimp are added when almost finished.

Leche flan ($9 or $12) is flan with steamed caramel or cooked brown sugar syrup. But here you can have it topped with crushed pistachios and bagnet bits.

Additionally, a family-sized (eight to 12 people) traditional Boodle Feast Galore can be pre-ordered.

Blanco has hopes to one day open a second restaurant near his medical center in Panorama City. However, his most timely quest is to provide assistance to those suffering in Ukraine.

With this in mind, he plans to collect donations for a reputable fund that goes directly to those people – and he will match those donations, up to a reasonable point for a small business. “Poor and rich are able to give, as long as they have a joyful heart to share,” he said. “And we are blessed to live in the US, where we have so much. I feel for the people of Ukraine, and will show that with a banner on my restaurant sign.”

“Please take the opportunity to learn about the history of this land,” said Weste. “It is part of our lives, it’s part of our children’s future and it’s how we became this great city that we are today.”

During the ceremony, JSB Development President Jim Backer, whose company oversaw the development of the entire Vista Canyon project, said the project builders had five design philosophies that they wanted to hold themselves accountable to.

The park and Mitchell family home construction, Backer said, satisfied two of those core philosophies.

“One was to honor the connection to local history,” said Backer. “The second is to provide innovative community design and I think we’ve done that with the way the park was designed in its final form with all … different types of trails.”

The ceremony concluded with the red-ribbon cutting for the park that included all dignitaries present, as well as a chance for those in attendance to tour the inside of the Mitchell River House. 

The Halfway House Cafe got its name from its location halfway between Los Angeles and Palmdale. It began as a trading post in 1906. The restaurant was established in 1931.

A popular filming location since the 1930s Clint Eastwood filmed a scene here for “Heartbreak Ridge” (1986).

Just a few years ago it seemed that the Halfway House Cafe was in half the commercials and television shows on the air.

Credits include: “Heroes,” “Melrose Place,” “Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip,” “Numbers,” “CSI,” “ER,” “The King of Queens,” “Sons of Anarchy,” “Diagnosis Murder,” “Monk,” “Space Cowboys,” “Lost in America,” Waitress,” “The Twilight Zone,” “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” and “Every Which Way But Loose.”

Among the cafe’s most famous commercial appearances are the 2014 Geico Motorcycle Insurance “Diner” commercial and the iconic 1991 Pepsi commercial featuring Cindy Crawford.

Established 1980 Info https://lechene.com While Le Chene is merely celebrating its 42nd anniversary, the building that houses the charming French restaurant has a wonderful history that dates back to 1923 when the owners of The Oaks Garage (established 1917) hired a contractor (using a horse and wagon) to haul river stones from Big Rock Creek, south of Pearblossom to construct a café.

The trip took two days to complete in each direction. The stones gave the building a castle-like appearance.

Postcards of the time refer to it as the Castle Oaks Garage and Café.

In the 1950s it was a destination for celebrities including Roy Rogers and Dale Evans, William Boyd (Hopalong Cassidy) and Jane Wyman. Crime boss Mickey Cohan was said to have conducted business while dining at The Oaks Cafe. Clark Gable would park his motorbike out front while he ate.

Current owner Juan Alonso purchased the building in 1981 and made improvements including landscaping that included a wooden waterwheel and lush foliage to create a romantic restaurant escape.

T

he City of Santa Clarita is a place where residents of all ages, backgrounds and abilities can come together as one unified community. From after-school programs for students to evening events for seniors to volunteer opportunities to give back to others, opportunities abound for entertainment and enrichment.

One project that embodies the heart and soul of Santa Clarita is the Inclusive Play Area at Canyon Country Park, which opened to the public in January 2020.

Prior to 2020, the City did not have a play area specifically designed for children of all ages and abilities. It is crucial for children with special needs to be able to access a space where kids of all abilities can engage, socialize, learn and play together in a safe and welcoming environment. The City set

out to construct an inclusive play area to fulfill this community need.

The Inclusive Play Area at Canyon Country Park is the first of its kind built by the City of Santa Clarita and ensures that people of all ages and abilities have a place where they can grow, explore, imagine, wonder and play together. The Inclusive Play Area is the product of a deliberate and thoughtful process to ensure that the needs of all who use the facility are met.

To solve the challenge of developing an Inclusive Play Area that truly meets the needs of those who would use it most — children in Santa Clarita — the City of Santa Clarita initiated a community planning process to keep residents engaged and involved every step of the way.

Prior to construction in 2019, City staff held a series of public outreach meetings with parents and their children, service providers in Santa Clarita, design consultants and other

stakeholders to achieve this goal.

Throughout the process, public input and feedback helped shape the final design of the Inclusive Play Area, including the interactive and sensory activity features.

Community members met to review updated designs and offer suggestions on adding features that would make the park a destination for families throughout the Santa Clarita Valley.

These features, which you can experience during your next visit to Canyon Country Park, include a dual-track accessible zip line, an accessible merry-go-round, music and sound amenities, shaded seating areas, a fenced-in playground, wheelchair accessibility throughout the

park and a new pet waste station.

If you haven’t been to Canyon Country Park to see the Inclusive Play Area, now is a great time to plan a trip. Located at 17615 Soledad Canyon Road, Canyon Country Park also includes a ball diamond, picnic tables and a second playground on the upper portion of the split-level park, adjacent to Sarita Avenue.

Since it opened more than two years ago, the Inclusive Play Area has grown to be a popular destination for families, drawing parents and their children from throughout the Santa Clarita Valley. The positive public feedback has also led the City to take steps to construct a second Inclusive Play Area, which will be located on the west side of Santa Clarita.

The second inclusive play area will be at West Creek Park, located at 24247 Village Circle in Valencia. Construction is set to begin in Fall 2022 to transform the existing playground into an area full of fun, challenging and engaging activities for all ages.

When complete, the new Inclusive Play Area will measure approximately 10,600 square feet and also have an outdoor community fitness area. A Bankshot Playcourt, which offers basketball hoops at varying heights with non-conventionally shaped and angled backboards, will also be installed.

In March, the City held a hybrid community meeting to review design concepts and solicit input from Santa Clarita families.

Over the next few months, the play area’s design will be refined and finalized to ensure that the finished product is an outdoor play environment that provides physical and social inclusion opportunities for all.

The community spirit, collaborative process and commitment to inclusivity that resulted in the Inclusive Play Area at Canyon Country Park have provided a strong framework that will lead to many more life-changing projects throughout the Santa Clarita Valley and beyond. 

As a result, the family held a fundraiser in the past month with the goal to donate a million dollars to the 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization Cure Sanfilippo Foundation, which

would fund a clinical trial that could give Carter a chance at life.

“Over the years the structure has been a gathering place to have an unobstructed view of the festivities (and fireworks) from Six Flags,” Zambrano said.

The crowd-pleasing Concerts in the Park series returns to Santa Clarita for a music-filled summer, starting this weekend at Central Park.

Concerts in the Park are free public events put on by the city of Santa Clarita every Saturday night from July 7 until Aug. 25. The shows start at 7 p.m.

Get ready to break out your lawn chairs and blankets, grab some tasty snacks from local vendors onsite and listen to some of your favorite genre tribute bands coming to the Saugus park.

Here’s a breakdown of each band performing at Concerts in the Park:

July 7

Wanted, a Bon Jovi tribute band, is first up in the lineup of Concerts in the Park. Based out of Los Angeles, the band is made up of professional musicians.

The rock ’n’ roll group had immense success, playing to sold out venues and garnering rave reviews. Wanted was finally created after numerous requests from agents and promoters who worked with the band on other projects.
