By Alicia Doyle Sunday Signal Staff Writer

s the global pandemic continues to force many people into isolation, several new shows in 2022 can help pass the time — as well as new seasons of series you’ve enjoyed over the past couple of years. Below is a rundown of a few new shows you can check out in 2022.
‘All of Us Are Dead’
Fridays (Netflix) “All of Us Are Dead” is about a high school that becomes ground zero for a zombie virus outbreak, where trapped students must fight their way out or turn into one of the rabid infected. This Korean drama is streamed on Netflix and contains action, drama and fantasy. It was rated 7.7 out of 10 stars on IMDb and is being compared to “Squid Game.” Currently ranks #2 on Netflix’ top 10 in the U.S. Language spoken: Korean and English.
‘In From the Cold’
Fridays (Netflix) Currently coming in at #5 on Netflix’ top 10 is “In From the Cold.” Starring Margarita Levieva as Jenny Franklin, its the story of an American single mom who’s been exposed as an ex-Russian spy. Franklin struggles to juggle family life and unique shape-shifting skills in a battle against an insidious enemy. This show fits in the categories of action, crime and drama, and received 5.7 out of 10 stars on IMDb.
‘The Woman in the House Across the Street from the Girl in the Window’
Fridays (Netflix) If you like mysteries, check out the long-titled, mini series “The Woman in the House Across the Street from the Girl in the Window” starring Kristin Bell. It’s about a handsome neighbor who moves in across the street from Anna (Bell), a heartbroken woman for whom every day is the same, and starts to see a light at the end of the tunnel. That is until she witnesses a gruesome murder — or so she thinks. This mini-series, now streamed on Netflix, was rated 6.5 out of 10 stars on IMDb. This comedy/crime/drama is currently number 1 on Netflix’ top 10 shows.
‘House of the Dragon’
Coming Soon (HBO) “Game of Thrones” fans are anticipating “House of the Dragon,” which is slated to come out in the fall or winter of this year on HBO. The story revolves around the Targaryen civil war that took place about 200 years before events portrayed in “Game of Thrones.” It’s based on the George R.R. Martin book “Fire & Blood.” According to HBO the following actors have signed on for the series: Paddy Considine (HBO’s “The Third Day” and “The Outsider”), Olivia Cooke (“Ready Player One”), Emma D’Arcy (“Truth Seekers”), Matt Smith (“The Crown” and “Doctor Who”), Steve Toussaint (“It’s a Sin” and “Doctor Who”), Eve Best (“Nurse Jackie” and “The King’s Speech”), Rhys Ifans (“Notting Hill” and “The Amazing Spider-Man”) and Sonoya Mizuno (“Ex Machina” and “Crazy Rich Asians”).
‘Pam and Tommy’
Wednesdays (Hulu) “Pam and Tommy,” a TV miniseries released Feb. 2, is based on the true story of the relationship between “Baywatch” star Pamela Anderson and rock star Tommy Lee. The series is about their romance that began when the two got married after knowing each other for 96 hours in 1995. “Pam and Tommy” stars Lily James (“The Dig”) as Anderson and Sebastian Stan (“The Falcon and the Winter Soldier”) as Lee.

Name a Star ❤ Grant a Lord or Lady Title ❤ Stir Memories By Alicia Doyle Sunday Signal Staff Writer

re you looking for something unique to give your loved one for Valentine’s Day? Below are a few ideas that your Valentine will never forget. Many people — women in particular — love getting a frilly, heart-shaped box filled with chocolates or other sweets. You can make this gift beautifully personal by replacing the candy pieces with little treasures or mementos for your loved one. These treasures don’t have to be expensive, and the ideas are endless: a small rock shaped like a heart you found on the beach; a matchbook from your favorite restaurant; a special coin you found on a walk together. Imagine the look on your loved one’s face when they open this box expecting to find chocolates — this is the kind of Valentine’s Day gift that will always be remembered. And it goes without saying that the biggest challenge is figuring out what to do what all those chocolates. If your Valentine likes coffee or tea — or anything hot that requires a mug — a personalized magic photo mug with a heart-shaped handle would make a great gift. You can buy these mugs online, where you upload the photo of your choice to appear on the mug. These custom mugs are heat sensitive, and remain a solid color until hot liquid is poured in. The “magic” occurs when the hot liquid hits, revealing the photograph. Have you ever thought of becoming a Lord or Lady through owning a plot of land? Established Titles was set up to preserve woodland in Scotland while making a unique gift for those looking for something different. These title packs are based on a historic Scottish

land ownership custom where landowners have been long referred to as Lairds, the Scottish term for Lord, with the female equivalent being Lady. For Valentine’s Day, Established Titles is offering a sale with up to 80% off. For instance, a Lordship Title Pack with a dedicated plot of land measuring five square feet is normally $209.95, and is being offered for $41.99 as part of the Valentine’s Day special. If your Valentine loves books, the Friends of Santa Clarita Public Library will host a Bag Sale event at the Valencia, Canyon Country and Newhall branches through Feb. 13. The sale will occur each day during normal operating hours for each branch. For $7, participants can fill a provided bag with any books, DVDs and CDs they find for sale in the Friends of the Library book store. Patrons with book bags from a previous sale can participate for $6. Proceeds from the bag sale support programming for the Santa Clarita Public Library. In other unique gifts, you can name a star as a present for Valentine’s Day in which you get a gift certificate with a personalized design and dedication. Offered through star-registration.com with a 10% discount for Valentine’s Day, you can choose the type of star you’d like to name, such as a standard visible star, a star in a constellation or binary star system. As far as naming a star is concerned,
the name can be either an invented name, such as “little mouse,” or a real name, such as “Sarah Johnson.” All the star names are processed and recorded in the globally recognized Star-naming Registry. The naming of a star is valid for a lifetime, and there are no additional costs.

What Are You Made Of? Finding Your Family History

f you have an interest in your genealogy — in other words, where you came from — the Valencia Family History Center offers information about your roots for free. “We’re open to the public and we help people do family history research,” explained Scott Stratton, one of many volunteer consultants at the center. Walk-ins are welcome on Mondays from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Thursdays from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. The center is also open on Saturdays by appointment only. “We cover the entire Santa Clarita Valley, so anyone in valley, or anywhere else for that matter, is welcome to pop-in,” Stratton said. “We love doing family history.” In addition to providing personal assistance, the center offers computers with free access to premium websites, microfilm and microfiche readers with access to more than two million rolls of microfilm, printers, scanners and a book library. Many people have a true desire to connect with their ancestry, “so we

be able to help them.” The Valencia Family History Center is sponsored by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints; for members of this church learning about one’s family history is more than just a casual endeavor. Latter-day Saints believe families can be together after this life, therefore, it is essential to strengthen relationships with all family members — both those who are alive and those who have died. “We have a fundamental belief that we should look after our ancestors and learn about them — so it stems from fundamentals within our church,” said Stratton, adding that folks do not need to be a member of the church to utilize the family history center. “We know that many others in the community have a similar desire to want to connect. We’re open to the public, so we have lots of people coming in, and everything is free,” he re-emphasized. “We just feel passionate about our own family histories and creating family trees … and we
know that others feel the same way.” Plus, “it’s a way to reach out to the community and help.” Stratton noted that prior the pandemic, the center hosted an in-person Family History Fair. “We’d have maybe 300 people — but that’s all virtual now,” he said. “Last year’s virtual event reached a million people world-wide. This year’s going to be way bigger, so anyone in the world can connect.” On March 3 through 5, there will be three full days of classes at every level of family history interest. Registration is now open at https://www. familysearch.org/rootstech/next/. “It’s absolutely free,” Stratton said. “It will feature every nationality, every culture.” The Valencia Family History Center is located at 24443 McBean Parkway, Santa Clarita 91355. aybe you are retired and coming to the Santa Clarita Valley to be near loved ones, or maybe you’ve lived here for decades but want to downsize as the latter half of your personal century progresses. The good news is that the SCV is home to quite a number of senior living communities and facilities, ranging from those where you purchase a home in the “community” to luxury apartments for independent people 55 and older, to otherwise independent and assisted living. Whether owning or renting, these independent folks not only live with other seniors of like ability, but also have immediate access to at least a modicum of community activities. A senior community might have both independent living and assisted living sections, and a senior apartment complex may have a pool and gym. Prices will vary widely, as well, from owning said luxury apartments to more “affordable” units intended for those with lower income. The city of Santa Clarita provides a list of affordable senior facilities at bit.ly/34t8z16, but it is by no
means an exhaustive list. You should search online, make calls, make visits and ask around at the senior center. You’ll soon get a feel for what is right for you price-wise and amenity-wise. Also, read between the lines. Just exactly what are the activities offered each month? How much “community” is there, really? Your best bet is to visit and observe and talk to the residents. They’ll give you the straight scoop. But we’ll help you get started. Herein, we consider just a few of the best-known independent living senior communities in the SCV.
FountainGlen of Valencia
Friendly Valley
Vintage at Bouquet Canyon
“Friendly Valley Country Club is a private, residential, guard-gated, 55 and over community with amenities well suited for the active senior.” Established in the 1960s, with newer additions since, Friendly Valley is probably the best-known senior community in the SCV. At Friendly Valley, you own your own home and the land it is on. Residences range from condos to three-bedroom single family homes. The Friendly Valley is located at 19345 Ave of the Oaks, Newhall 91321. For more information, visit friendlyvalleycountryclubwebsite.com.

Built in the early 2000s, Belcaro is another SCV senior community where you purchase your own home at resale. These come on the market from time to time, and range from around 1,700 to 2,400 square feet. For active seniors 55 and up, Belcaro features a pool and spa, tennis courts, exercise room, 9,000-square-foot clubhouse and lounge with snack bar. Various Realtors promote Belcaro resales. Belcaro is located at 28201 River Trail Lane, Valencia 91354. For information, visit scvseniorhomes.com/homes, 55places.com/california/communities/belcaro or belcarovalencia.com.

Delve into historical periods, cook up a dish from a recipe book, space out in the latest sci-fi novel or practice a new language in the Library’s diverse catalog. Much like the comfort many of us find in a good book, you can find that same comfort from your local librarian friends. If you have seen the City’s new “You’ve Got A Friend” posters around town, then you have seen some of the exceptional staff that work in our Library branches. The campaign was developed to remind residents of Santa Clarita’s accessible services and staff. (“A perfect example is 50 Cent appeared on The Game’s first track,” explains Yasper. “It changed the game for The Game.”) As Detective Danner interviews each potential suspect and they recount events from the reunion and the afterparty, the storytelling genre shifts to fit the persona of that particular interviewee, e.g., when it’s Yasper’s turn, we’re suddenly in a musical, with Yasper taking the lead on a “Hamilton”-esque number titled “We All Get One Shot … Twice”: Eric Stoltz couldn’t go back in time and get rehired As Marty in “Back to the Future” after he was fired But then he got a cool supporting role in “Pulp Fiction” And now he’s a sought-after director of television! We all get one shot … twice We all get one shot … twice It’s absolutely ridiculous, but it works, due largely to the fact Schwartz as Yasper is actually a talented rapper, and he sells the cheerfully silly material. In other episodes, Aniq’s story plays out like a rom-com, while Chelsea’s version of events is told in classic horror-movie style, and Brett’s mind-movie has him starring in a “Fast & Furious”-style action film in which he races around in his muscle car and keeps talking about how there’s nothing more important than family — even as he endangers his young daughter’s life by having her in the back seat of that car as he roars through town. What a fantastic idiot! Some techniques play out better than others; Zoe’s 2D animated story is a swing and miss. On balance, though, “The Afterparty” is a witty satirical experiment so entertaining, I’d be in favor a second season with a whole new reunion-murder.

Greenhouses can extend growing seasons

M
odern, large-scale agriculture operations utilize various machines and technologies to provide products to consumers. Greenhouses are among the resources used to help plants thrive. Greenhouses are not a new phenomenon, even if today’s incarnations have technological upgrades over their ancestors. The first attempts to grow plants in greenhouse-like structures likely date back to ancient Egypt, but there are writings from the Romans as early as 14 BCE explaining greenhouse operations. The Roman emperor Tiberius wanted to eat cucumbers all year long. Roman winters would not allow for cucumbers to thrive when temperatures dropped below freezing. Rolling cucumber growing carts into sheds only did so much. Someone came up with the concept of making sheds with sheets of elenite, a transparent rock, to let the sun in and help keep cucumbers growing indoors warm. The idea took off from there. Greenhouses are comprised of walls and roofing materials primarily made of a transparent material. The interior of a greenhouse exposed to sunlight becomes significantly warmer than the external temperature, helping to protect plants inside from extreme conditions and enabling plants to thrive even when weather conditions are not optimal. Through the years, greenhouses also may have incorporated some form of additional heating. Keeping plants thriving for commercial production now gets additional help from computers, as rely-
ing on sunlight alone may result in fluctuations in optimal conditions. Modern, smart greenhouses, according to the cultivation technology company Growlink, employ smart technology for heating, cooling and lighting. This tech is connected to a computer to optimize plant growth conditions. Computers can adjust conditions accordingly for the particular plant being produced, such as for tropical fruits that require more moisture and heat. Anyone who desires a greenhouse for personal plant growth can build one in his or her backyard with various plans available for free or purchase. Companies also sell prefabricated greenhouse kits that can be erected with relative ease. Handy homeowners also can construct basic greenhouses with materials found at many home improvement retailers. A wood frame greenhouse can be built in any size and covered with plastic sheeting. One can purchase a prefabricated greenhouse door or simply use a sheet of weighted plastic that can be tied out of the way for the door. To allow for ventilation in hot weather, a wood-frame vent that can be propped open can be incorporated into the roof rafter design. Those who want a more permanent structure may want to look into using greenhouse plastic paneling in lieu of plastic sheeting. Either way, home greenhouses can be as elaborate or as simple as individuals desire. Greenhouses are effective ways to extend growing seasons for both commercial and home gardeners. (MC)

Still Time to Reduce Your Mortgage Payment by Refinancing?
E
xperts say that with mortgage rates beginning to rise, refinancing your home now might be your last best chance to lower your monthly mortgage payment, as rates remain near all-time lows. Those who refinanced early in 2021 have already reaped the benefits. Borrowers who refinanced their 30-year fixed rate mortgage into another 30year fixed rate mortgage during the first half of 2021 saved more than $2,800 in mortgage payments on principal and interest annually, according to a recent Freddie Mac research report. But mortgage rates are rising. Indeed, in October 2021, the 30-year fixed-rate mortgage, which is the most common type of mortgage, rose to its highest point since April, surpassing 3%. Freddie Mac forecasts that mortgage rates will continue to rise, averaging 3.5% for the 30-year fixed in 2022. That’s up from an average of 3.0% in 2021. So is it time to refinance your home loan? To help you make an informed decision, Freddie Mac is offering answers to commonly asked questions about the refinancing process: What does refinancing mean? When you refinance your mortgage, you’re applying for a new mortgage to replace your current one, which will
result in a new rate, term and monthly payment. The most common type of refinance is a no cashout refinance, in which you’re refinancing the remaining balance on your mortgage. When should I consider refinancing? Generally speaking, refinances make the most financial sense when average interest rates are at least half a percentage point lower than the interest rate on your current mortgage. Another reason to consider refinancing is if your financial situation has improved, allowing you to secure a loan with a shorter term and own your home sooner. Finally, if you currently have an adjustable-rate mortgage (ARM) and it’s adjusting upward, you may wish to convert to a fixed-rate mortgage that provides you with the security of consistent payments. Is refinancing free? Although refinancing your
mortgage could save you money both in the longand short-term, it isn’t free. For the most part, refinancing costs are similar to what you paid when you purchased your home, including a loan origination fee. There are required services involved, such as appraisals, and state and local fees that can vary significantly based on where you live. The average cost to refinance is almost $5,000, so you should carefully consider how long you plan to stay in your home to ensure the savings to outweigh the costs. Who should handle my refinance? You don’t have to use your current lender to refinance your loan. In fact, it’s in your best interest to shop around and compare multiple lenders’ loan estimates in search of the best terms and cost. It may take more time, but even a difference as small as one-quarter of a percentage point can save you thousands of dollars over the life of your home loan. There may be no time like the present to lock in the lowest possible rate and receive the highest monthly savings. To get a sense of what refinancing could save you, access Freddie Mac’s refinance calculator, along with additional homebuying and refinancing resources, at myhome.freddiemac.com. (StatePoint)

SENIORLIVING
Outdoor Activities that are Perfect for Seniors
T
he great outdoors beckons people of all ages. Fresh air can be hard to resist and the benefits of spending time outdoors are so numerous that it behooves anyone, including seniors, to answer the call of nature. According to researchers with the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Forest Service, human beings benefit both physically and psychologically from spending time in nature. Such experiences can reduce stress and help lower heart rates, potentially decreasing individuals’ risk for cardiovascular disease. In addition, the Forest Service notes that spending time outside in green spaces has been linked to a lower risk of depression. Seniors who are retired or even aging empty nesters who are still in the workforce can make great use of their free time by venturing into the great outdoors. The following are a handful of senior-friendly outdoor activities that provide a great reason to get off the couch and take in all that Mother Nature has to offer. Hiking Hiking provides a great workout and an ideal opportunity to spend time in an idyllic setting. The U.S. National Park Service notes that hiking helps individuals build stronger muscles and bones, improves their sense of balance, has a positive effect on heart health, and can decrease the risk of certain respiratory problems. Hiking is an especially attractive outdoor activity for seniors, as many parks feature trails with varying degrees of difficulty, ensuring there’s a trail for seniors whether they’re seasoned or novice hikers. Water aerobics The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention notes that water-based exercises can be especially helpful individuals with chronic diseases, a category many seniors fall into. The CDC notes that one study published in the journal Arthritis & Rheumatology found that improves the use of joints affected by arthritis without worsening symptoms. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services also notes that swimming can lead to improved

Seniors can reap these benefits by going for a dip in their own backyard pools or a local body of water, such as a lake or ocean. Many swim clubs also offer discounted memberships to seniors, making these another great and affordable way to reap the benefits of swimming. Fishing Of course not all outdoor activities need to make seniors huff and puff. Fishing provides a great reason to get outdoors, and many individuals devoted to fishing report feeling less stressed after a day spent casting for their favorite fish. Individuals who consume what they catch also can benefit by improving their diets, as the American Heart Association notes that consuming certain types of fish has been linked to a lower risk for heart disease and obesity. Volunteering Local environmental groups often sponsor cleanups at parks and waterfront attractions like beaches and lakes. Volunteering with such organizations is a great way to get outside and give back, and working with like-minded individuals can be a great way for seniors to meet new people. In addition, a national study sponsored by the Corporation for National and Community Service in 2019 found that 88% of Senior Corps volunteers who initially reported a lack of companionship reported a decrease in feelings of isolation after volunteering. The opportunities for seniors to enjoy the great outdoors are endless. Taking advantage of such chances can benefit seniors in myriad ways. (MC)

PETS
Top 5 Healthy Habits for Pets and Their Owners
P
ets are the lights of their owners’ lives. And keeping pets healthy is key to extending the warmth and love for years. Dr. Ernie Ward, nationally renowned veterinarian, pet author and founder of the Association for Pet Obesity Prevention, offers his ‘Top 5 Healthy Habits’ for pet owners to help ensure pets stay happy and healthy throughout the year: 1. Healthy Eats and Treats The most important decision you make each day regarding your pet’s health is what you feed it. When choosing pet food, look for meat as one of the first few ingredients, and avoid by-products, artificial flavors, colors and preservatives whenever possible. When it comes to treats, look for low-cal options that confer some health benefit. Treats that help maintain healthy joints, clean teeth or en-
sure pills are taken are recommended. The Greenies Brand specializes
in great-tasting treats individually formulated to deliver these benefits. If you’re going to give treats, make them count! 2. Brain Boosters Most people love puzzles — and so does your pet! One of the best ways to feed and treat pets is with a food puzzle. These clever devices hide your pet’s food or treats until they unlock the secret and get their goodies. These tools engage your pet’s brain and bust boredom while you’re away. Forget peanut butter-stuffed toys; these toys stimulate thought and don’t pack on the pounds!

3. Power Play Walking your dog and playing with your cat each day keeps them trim, healthy and mentally alert. Pets that don’t receive enough physical activity (“lap potatoes”) have the highest rates of weight-related diseases such as arthritis and diabetes and suffer from behavioral problems. For dogs, 20 to 30 minutes of brisk walking each day benefits both ends of the leash. For cats, two or three five-minute play periods are plenty. And don’t worry! Walking with your pet can be fun! Try programs like Greenies Wag & Walk 4 Life, and get
active with your pet. 4. Paws Together It’s more fun to play with other dogs! Socialized dogs are simply better behaved and more fun. Visit a dog park, enroll in training classes or become active in serving your community. There are endless ways to get you and your dog to interact with other pet lovers. Share the fun and join a new pack! 5. Pets and Vets Somehow pet owners started believing that the only time you need a vet is when something is wrong with your pet. The secret to a long and healthy life is vet visits when everything appears fine. A pet owner’s primary goal should be to prevent disease, not only treat it. Changes in diet or lifestyle, giving nutritional supplements and exercising more are straight forward solutions. Sometimes you just need a prod; other times a push. Your veterinarian is your pet’s voice; let them speak for your pet by visiting once a year for young pets and twice yearly for those over age seven. Donna’s Day: Creative Family Fun
A Family Chore Chart That Gets the Jobs Done Markers and ruler

ost chore charts — the ones where the days of the week run across the top and the chores are listed down one side — don’t take into account that family days are unpredictable! What if no one’s home for dinner because of a basketball game? Does one child get to skip her turn doing dishes? Or does she have to do it the next night, thereby throwing off the whole chart? See what I mean? So here’s a new plan that really gets the jobs done — unless you have a gremlin in the house. (I’ll explain later.) Discuss with your kids the basic chores that need to be done in your home. Five or six jobs is a good number for starters. You might want to add a category for the most-sought-

after privilege. In our house each of the kids ALWAYS wants to sit in the front seat of the car.
For a sturdy chore board, here’s what you need: 1 piece of white foam board, cut in a rectangle that’s 18 inches wide by 9 inches long
6 adhesive-backed plastic hooks 6 metal rings (available at office stores) Several plain index cards, cut in 1-inch-by-5-inch strips with a hole punched at the top of each strip (one strip for each child for each chore and privilege).
With a marker, print the chores across the top of the board. Draw vertical lines down the board to separate the categories. Under each chore, attach a hook. Let your kids each print their name on their own six strips, then have them loop their strips on each ring and hang on each hook. Explain that the person whose name appears on top of the ring is “up” for the task/privilege in the category. When she completes the job, she gets to flip her name over so that the next child’s name appears. Now it’s his turn! As for the gremlins? Well, it can happen that a name is mysteriously missing from one loop (washing dishes) and is subsequently found twice in another (gets to choose any dessert). So suddenly someone’s saying, “Hey! When’s the last time Amelia had sink duty?” Nothing’s perfect. Mostly, though, this chore chart works like a charm. Because not only is the method clear and fair, but the kids are involved in the process. Donna Erickson’s award-winning series “Donna’s Day” is airing on public television nationwide. Granddaughter’s COVID-19 Dilemma My granddaughter is six months pregnant and the entire family, naturally, is looking forward to the new member in April. About two weeks ago, however, my granddaughter was presented with a horrible dilemma. As a health care worker and in accordance with Joe Biden’s dictates, her employer informed her she must receive a booster shot or be fired. Keeping in mind that she had previously contracted COVID, that she had also been fully vaccinated, that her job required no contact with either patients or coworkers, and that there is little or no data regarding the possibly adverse effects of vaccines on unborn children, my granddaughter sought to do the reasonable thing and request a three-month delay of the booster. Her employer, based on Biden’s guidelines, said no unless she had a medical exemption! So, she went to her doctor with an exemption form, but the doctor refused to sign, mumbling something about how she was in more danger from COVID than from the shot. My granddaughter tried to point out that that argument is ridiculous since, in addition to her natural immunity and her fully vaccinated status, the booster has been shown not to work against the prevailing Omicron variant and there is no data about the danger to the unborn. The doctor still refused to sign. We suspect that this has more to do with the California medical bureaucracy threatening to de-license doctors who do not adhere to the Biden dictates than any reasoning on her part. So, my granddaughter is stuck in a dilemma between the proverbial rock and a hard place. On the one hand she can refuse the shot and lose her job along with her medical insurance and possibly her house and her financial future. On the other hand, she can take the shot and risk an unknown level of harm to her unborn child. I honestly do not know, at this point, what path she will choose and can only pray that it will be the best one. But I do abhor the very idea that such a personal choice has been so unfairly influenced by a bunch of faceless, unaccountable, uncaring and arguably unscientific federal and state bureaucrats. So should everyone who is reading this. When did we give up this control over our own health? How long are we going to tolerate it? John Weaver Valencia

Why Does Any Life Matter? By David Hegg
A
s I write this, I’m on vacation and am forcing myself to slow down. I’ve even decided that I want to experience pure boredom, and then do nothing about it. And it’s working! What I’m finding is that when I’m not chasing around trying to get things done, I have time to muse. Now, musing isn’t something we often talk about, right? You don’t walk into your office or coffee shop and say, “Hey everybody, anyone want to share your latest musings with me?” Right. But guess what? I’d like to share my latest, deepest musing with you because I’m on vacation and this just might help you. I started thinking back to when the “(blank) Lives Matter” declaration first made headlines. It started with “Black Lives Matter” and has been co-opted into all kinds of rebuttals like “All Lives Matter,” “Christian Lives Matter,” “Blue Lives Matter” and the very convenient “(fill in the blank) Lives Matter. Turns out we all want our lives to matter. But all of this is only pointing out the haunting feeling we all sense that actually lives increasingly don’t seem to matter all that much, in too many places, for too many reasons. When a society has to start shouting that life matters it can only mean too many people think some lives don’t. But here’s my musing. The pronouncement that “(fill in the blank) Lives Matter” begs the real question: Why does any life matter really in the long run? If, as evolutionary theory demands, all life is merely the current result of a random set of chemical processes occurring without purpose over millions of years, then how can one life matter in the greater scheme of things? If life has no grand purpose, no design, no intentionality except to make the most of our split-second of time as measured against the vast backdrop of the universe, why does it matter? If we got here by chance, and are living in a dangerous world where too much wrong fills too many lives, and even monumental wealth can’t ward off disease, despair and desperation, then how does it really matter how we live our lives? After all, whatever we call the fertilized egg growing in a mother’s womb, our society now
doesn’t consider it a person. It is just a non-viable tissue mass that can be harvested like any other money crop. Apparently, fetal lives don’t matter. And what can we say about those who, in promotion of their own view of which lives matter, go about taking life to make their point? When a police officer is ambushed because he wears a badge, and those who say certain lives matter pawn it off as justice, are we too blinded by passion and prejudice to see the abject irony? Nothing shows the meaninglessness of life more than ending it out of hatred for a certain kind of life that apparently shouldn’t matter. In spite of all the sloganeering to the contrary, it looks to me that living matters less and less every day in our world. The numbers of those refusing to make the most of their lives are growing, as the rising suicide rate undeniably shows. And if we consider the value of life to be measured only by how we feel or what we can produce, then it comes as no surprise that “right to die” laws are proliferating. Life just doesn’t mean what it once did. Consequently, life is starting to matter less and less. But this doesn’t have to be the case. Life can matter, and not just as a slogan for some particular cause. Every life matters because each one was created purposefully, by a loving Creator who has designed life as a means of representing him. The Bible states God created mankind – male and female – as his image bearers, designed to find purpose in this life and the next. In fact, this life has purpose as a prelude to the next. What we do with these years will determine how we will spend eternity. When all is said and done, life matters because God gave it to each of us and holds us accountable for how we use it to uphold his standards, obey his commands, display his love, and steward his creation. And as we are faithful to him, we will find joy and purpose and satisfaction in this life, and pleasures forevermore in the next. Local resident David Hegg is senior pastor of Grace Baptist Church. “Ethically Speaking” appears Sundays.
