DRIVING INNOVATION The Med-Tech World Summit holds its flagship event in Valletta’s historic Malta Convention Centre this year. An impressive 16th century building built by the Knights of St John, it originally served as a hospital, making it an ideal setting for Med-Tech World’s 2023 summit. The event provides an expert-led platform to explore the latest advancements in the med-tech industry. A hub for knowledge sharing, it also seeks to facilitate lasting connections between companies seeking to showcase their solutions and those in search of investment. We hope to encourage collaboration and drive innovation that will bring about transformative changes in the healthcare sector. Meanwhile, the AIBC brand has continued to stand on the cusp of innovation and cutting-edge tech. Masterfully linking together some of the leading projects in the space and incubating a network of influencers, C-Suite executives and thought leaders, the AIBC Summit provides an unmatched experience; serving as a launchpad for bright ideas and a think tank for the deep tech industry. In addition to successful events in Kenya and Dubai, 2023 has launched inaugural summits for AIBC Asia, AIBC Americas, and AIBC Balkans & CIS, in Manila, São Paulo, and Cyprus respectively. This growth is also highlighted in our choice of venue for AIBC Europe. As we usher in the new year we’ve taken an out of the box approach to exploring alternative spaces to accommodate the surge in demand from exhibitors and delegates. There was only one space that could offer us that all-important space to grow. Thanks to a robust road infrastructure and a refurbished venue, AIBC Europe will now be held at the Malta Maritime Hub - an operational shipbuilding yard which sits at the heart of one of Malta’s oldest industries. The unconventional space is just a stone’s throw away from Malta’s historic capital, Valletta - a stunning backdrop for the expo and the setting for many of our prized networking events. 2024 will continue to tap into this vision, with a brand new calendar of events to be announced over the coming months.

I am thrilled to reflect on an eventful year of roadshow events and exponential growth. In this ever-evolving landscape of innovation, we find ourselves incredibly fortunate and grateful to be working within the med-tech industry, where every day brings us closer to improving healthcare and helping improve our patients’ lives. We have traversed the globe, from Dubai to London, and Istanbul, uniting med-tech enthusiasts, startups, and seasoned CEOs, while also proudly helping to nurture a local med-tech ecosystem in Malta. We've only just begun as we gear up for our flagship event in Malta, and I'd like to share our accomplishments and plans for the future.

GLOBAL ROADSHOW SUCCESS

Our roadshow events in Dubai, London, and Istanbul were nothing short of spectacular. They brought together startups eager to pitch their innovative ideas and seasoned CEOs who shared their invaluable experiences. Malta Enterprise's partnership in all these events was pivotal, as they have been instrumental in advocating Malta as an ideal base for med-tech companies, highlighting our shared vision of fostering innovation in the sector. Our series roadshow events continue to serve as a bridge, connecting various stakeholders within the med-tech industry and have played a pivotal role in helping us shape the Malta Med-Tech World Summit as well as the local industry. The synergy between startups and established leaders created a unique environment for networking, collaboration, and knowledge sharing, setting the stage for the flagship event. Moreover, these roadshow events have proven to be instrumental in reaching international audiences, sparking widespread interest in our mission. They attracted a diverse range of participants, from startups brimming with innovation to well-established corporations with a wealth of experience, underscoring our global appeal and commitment to uniting the international med-tech community.

The best of both worlds: from global reach to innovation expertise For venture-backed healthtech companies, I work as a hub in a wheel to connect the most innovative companies with our expertise to unlock their value. The work is primarily in three pillars: high value deposits, venture debt, and value-add. For companies moving from early stage to Series A, or Series A and beyond, there are new challenges and opportunities which often need demystifying for CEOs and CFOs. This may include everything from understanding term sheets, understanding venture debt and its value, and supporting clients with the networks and conversations that will enhance market opportunities. I find that CEOs and CFOs often need a partner that has the gravitas, experience, and foresight to offer best-practice examples to support their business. The product suite at HSBC Innovation Banking enables this in a remarkably turnkey way. For example, if a company raises a $10M Series A there are a number of questions that should be considered. For example, is the $10M raise in US dollars, pounds, or euros? This single question is vitally important because if the $10M Series A is raised in US dollars, yet the business is headquartered in London, then what will be the foreign exchange impact of converting those dollars to pounds? This single transaction could easily be a ~20% shave off of the initial Series A raise. And then, what if this business actually has plans to grow in the United States, but they just lost $2M on a foreign exchange conversion to pounds. A bank that understands your investors, your business, and your plans for growth could vitally impact this scenario in a much more optimal way.

Are there any new partnerships or projects you can share with us? As we head into 2024 - what are your top 3 takeaways from this year? In a market where investors have pulled back, fortune favors the wise. Founders need to be incredibly smart about their burn rate so that they can survive long enough to ride the next wave. Second, never has it been more important for founders to take on the mantle of “chief storyteller”. When markets are down, founders have to be able to remind investors and partners about the bigger vision, about real patient impact, and why it’s worth pushing on to the next peak even when the road ahead is uncertain. Third: share the journey. Investors and partners don’t expect founders to have all the answers. So use the inexpensive tools at your disposal, like email and social media, to pull back the curtain and show your would-be partners how you handle the ups and downs of startup life.

He stressed his appreciation of the island's boldness and drive to push forward the development of artificial intelligence (AI) in particular. This approach is deemed even more impressive when considering the multitude of other jurisdictions that have not even acknowledged such powerful new technologies and in Hookings’ mind are playing it too safe. Malta in many ways has set the trend in AI. Hookings emphasised how playing a part and being at the forefront of such a movement brings him a great deal of excitement and vigour as he likened the significance of the AI revolution to the impact cars had on modern-day transport systems when they were first introduced. On a global scale, Malta is in many ways an industry leader. Obviously, the size and population of the islands mean the effects can only be impactful on a certain level. Hookings notes the incredible wealth of Dubai or the sheer population of the US as advantages the archipelago does not possess. Nonetheless, the achievements and importance Malta has indeed achieved cannot be overstated according to Hookings, who explains that “technology, when done properly, will only make life easier”. As an independent filmmaker with a strong base on the islands, Hookings had only praise for almost every aspect of Malta’s filmmaking infrastructure and support system. First coming to the islands professionally in 2018, Hookings’ first film was completed in 2019 with the infrastructure available for that film production leaving Hookings thoroughly impressed. He explained how Malta’s facilities and its filmmaking infrastructure are not only of an incredible standard but also the confidence the industry’s organisers have in its facilities is simply on a level he does not believe could be matched elsewhere. According to Hookings “Malta has really put itself on the map”. He stresses how the processes he experienced in his filmmaking endeavours in his home of the UK were not even comparable and barely a fraction of what was possible in Malta was possible. The reasons for this are plentiful. The 40 percent tax rebate on this type of endeavour is an obvious factor, however, Hookings placed a heavy emphasis on how much the industry gives back to the sector. He detailed how he was easily afforded a meeting with the film commissioner, the leader of a department that has been and continues to be highly supportive and willing to assist him in his time in Malta. He also acknowledged Malta’s storied and robust industry, stressing how Malta possesses important and seasoned expertise for filmmaking that can be traced back to iconic works such as the Popeye film as far back as 1980. Additionally, aspects such as the mild climate, the geographical location, and the great opportunities to work and create elevate Malta not simply above other nations that offer great tax credits without quality infrastructure but also make the islands a force globally. Hookings even stated that the opportunities created in Malta are as powerful as those in the famed and fabled Hollywood when considering his own recent understandings. As an independent filmmaker, he also spoke at length about the impact AI has had on his industry as well as his personal and professional life.

The possibilities in Hookings’ mind are truly endless. For filmmaking in particular, the creative side is interestingly the most potent. Of course functions such as research actors of a certain age, demographic, look and experience along with finding other specific aspects of importance are greatly enhanced, improved and sped up by AI. The most cutting-edge effects are felt in the creation of projects and the development of ideas. Hookings explained that collaborating and brainstorming with the use of AI can easily improve aspects such as the creation of props, sets, costumes etc. which usually takes many skilled workers in numerous departments. Unfortunately for the time being, Hookings believes - not just in general but in film specifically, that the implementation of AI is not that prevalent. Eventually, he does project that with him and his peers at the forefront of many uses of AI, this will inevitably have to change in the coming future. Touching on the fear many hold around redundancies and AI replacement of human labour, Hookings admitted there will probably be many laid off in these areas, nonetheless, he emphasises how jobs will be created subsequently and how in many ways the increased productivity will make up in many ways for the lack of positions available. The possibilities are in a variety of ways holistically and comprehensively expansive, with Hookings postulating that many creative avenues, including outside of his field, are yet to be explored. What’s more is that Cloud services can even provide scalability and redundancy features which ensure that systems remain operational even when actively subjected to cyberattacks. What is important to note, however, is that Cloud security is still dependent on an organisation to responsibly configure and manage its Cloud resources. Failure to do so may result in data breaches and other security incidents, hence the need for such to-the-minute operations. Perhaps a more hotly debated topic was then raised in Blockchain Technology. The immutability and tamper-resistant nature make it uniquely suitable for maintaining critical records including logs and transaction histories. These features are useful to assist processes such as audits and forensic investigations. Additionally, Blockchain's decentralized architecture reduces the risk of a single point of failure. No central server or even authority can be compromised to a large-scale effect. This makes it far more difficult for attackers to manipulate data or launch wider attacks. All in all, Hall believes that both Cloud and Blockchain technologies possess the potential to enhance cyber security globally and particularly in the US as the landscape remains. Effectiveness, it is important to note, is predicated heavily on how these emerging technologies are implemented and integrated into an organisation’s well-honed overall cybersecurity strategy. It is in aiming to provide this strategy that AXES.ai has been able to construct its Blockchain Maturity Model. Advancements such as secure boost process, encrypted communication, as well as the development of a plethora of IoT-specific security frameworks to bring everything together. After a nearly 2 year NFT craze, a new report from dappGambl has suggested that the vast majority of NFTs are now worthless. Do NFTs still have a place in the future? The decrease in the value of NFTs was indeed anticipated, as their appeal primarily based on value appreciation was not the most effective way to fully harness the potential of this emerging technology. Game companies who are innovating with blockchain technologies are focusing on delivering a good gaming experience for players so every positive move from those companies towards blockchain gaming is important. We are also very happy to see Google providing a framework for game companies to freely advertise their NFTs Games. This is absolutely essential to see those actors opening their gates to the ecosystem in order to allow more adoption. Which trend do you think will have the most impact on the web3 space? What should investors watch out for? It is very early to be able to identify a trend, especially regarding the challenges our industry is facing. However, it is increasingly clear to investors that the gaming sector will play a pivotal role in onboarding new users to Web3. But when talking about Web2 or Web3 Gaming, the priorities remain the same. Build an exciting game and grow an engaging community. What will become crucial is the capability of game companies to facilitate a seamless transition within the gaming ecosystem, bridging the gap from Web2 to Web3. Your 2022 survey revealed that user adoption and onboarding was one of the biggest challenges being faced by the blockchain gaming industry - one year on, is this still the case? It's not surprising that Web3 Gaming initially faced challenges in providing a seamless experience for gamers unfamiliar with concepts like setting up a wallet, understanding seed phrases, or principles such as staking. In the gaming world, capturing a new player's attention and ensuring their sustained engagement is a matter of seconds. One year later, I can say that we’re seeing a lot of improvements. The issue for onboarding should be also seen from the eye of the game developer and his/her ability to build the best UX experience. Companies are building better infrastructure to allow game developers to easily integrate Web3 functionality within their game. As we are currently in the process of gathering insights from our members and industry professionals involved in Blockchain Gaming, we will have a clearer picture by the end of this year regarding whether onboarding remains one of the most significant challenges in our industry.

We are at the stage where different “traditional” players from different market segments are looking to explore web3 technology and finding relevance on how they can integrate it into their business. So, my take is that it is not the web3 industry interacting with other technologies, instead, it is the other way around. This is possible due to the hard work that the early adopters had put in. Are there any plans to expand the capabilities of Eagleeye in the future or integrate it with other security solutions? How does Beosin envision the platform's evolution? Yes, we do have plans to expand the capabilities of EagleEye. As mentioned earlier we are currently in beta testing for this new function of EagleEye and hoping to launch it before the end of the year. As we are a practical company we are in discussion with different strategic partners on how EagleEye could be integrated into their services. I will not go as far as to say we will evolve drastically, instead, we will be taking carefully planned steps to evolve according to the hard data that we have garnered from our research of the web3 industry. Are there specific industries or sectors that Beosin's Eagleeye is particularly tailored for, or is it designed to be applicable across various domains? Beosin’s EagleEye was catered to larger organisations due to the volume that was required, but in the future it will transition more towards consumers. He explained how rewarding he finds it as apart from the opportunities it presents to make money, he finds the topic very interesting. In fact he is surprised that investments and trading are not part of the general secondary education curriculum. Unlike previous generations, young people today are not waiting to invest their money until they are older. Gen Z, in particular, is taking a proactive approach to investing, with approximately 56 percent of those under 25 already participating in investment activities. Impressively, 80 percent of them began saving and investing before they turned 20. This is a stark contrast to millennials, where only a quarter initiated their investment journey before the age of 20, and even fewer, around 14 percent, among Gen X. Research conducted by the CFA Institute and the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA), which surveyed over 2,800 respondents from Gen Z, millennials and Gen X across the US, China, Canada and the UK, concludes that Gen Z is the most financially savvy generation when it comes to investments. Giglio dedicates a great deal of time to understand the intricacies of market dynamics, forecasting price movements and conducting essential analysis and research. He is intrigued by the inherent volatility of the market and the way it allows for swift and dramatic price fluctuations, potentially resulting in doubling one's investments for those astute enough to seize such prospects. He appreciates the process of improving his financial acumen, as it enables him to effectively manage his finances and capitalize on opportunities that arise. Not surprisingly, "fear of missing out" is a significant driving force behind this trend. As a young trader and investor, Giglio has discovered a community of Gen Z traders, both in Malta and internationally. Within these hubs, young traders engage in virtual discussions, share insights, offer advice and conduct trading activities collectively. The community is growing and Giglio recognises that the emergence of this industry is still at its infancy and is destined to grow exponentially. Giglio says that although he has connected with individuals online, he also interacts with friends who share similar interests in trading. Some are experienced and seem to be doing it on a full-time basis while others are still starting out their journey. He recognizes the value in networking with fellow traders. “Trading is not confined to a single approach,” he says, “and these interactions serve as valuable opportunities for learning and gaining experience from a number of diverse perspectives.” Giglio elaborates that while he has indeed established connections with fellow traders through online platforms and a variety of trading hubs, he places considerable importance on his interactions with friends who share a mutual interest in trading and investing.. Among this circle, he observes that there exists a spectrum of experiences: some traders possess extensive expertise and dedicate themselves to trading on a full-time basis, while others are at the early stages of their trading journey. There are others who are in employment and trade as a hobby. In discussing his interactions with his peers, Giglio values the inherent worth of networking within the trading community. He accentuates the notion that trading is not bound to a solitary methodology; rather, it is multifaceted with various approaches and strategies. Within these dynamic exchanges, he finds a wealth of valuable opportunities for both learning and experiential growth. Engaging with peers who bring distinct perspectives to the table allows him to gain insights from a spectrum of viewpoints, thereby broadening his understanding and ability to become a sharper and better trader. Giglio recognises that there is no single, fixed method in trading. Particularly during the initial stages, experimentation plays a crucial role until an individual discovers their own distinct style and approach. He acknowledges that the crypto and digital asset sector has faced many challenges and this included the collapse of FTX. Giglio however remains optimistic, He believes that there will be a strong resurgence which will be followed by a very rapid universal expansion.
