Summer 2019

From the CEO Brothers and Friends, This past February, Sigma Pi celebrated 122 years of continuous operation and has been proud to welcome over 117,000 initiated members across 232 chartered chapters. Throughout the course of our history, both locally and internationally, we have endured many obstacles; some, unfortunately, so severe that chapters have closed. These past two years of our history have allowed the Grand Council and I to be part of a vast array of surveys, focus groups, small groups and individual conversations about our past, present, and future. A predominant element throughout all of our discussions is the importance of our alumni and friends. As we prepare to celebrate 123 years in 2020, our future is bright, but will need your involvement as advisors, mentors, and donors in the coming years.

This past Founders’ Day, we launched the #whyibelieve campaign. Since we instituted this initiative, we have seen over 100 stories, quotes and videos from members on why they believe; and, it has been a remarkable display of the value and importance of Sigma Pi in the development of men. Your stories and experiences you’ve shared counter the negative narrative that surrounds fraternities and sororities that is portrayed in the media. Share your positive Sigma Pi story on social media by using hashtag #whyibelieve or by emailing enorton@sigmapi.org.

Beginning in April we have taken another step in our continuing efforts to ensure we are meeting the demands of today’s members with the buildout of our Education and Programs Department. This unit will provide advice and consultation to our numerous constituents on expectations as chapters, advisory boards, alumni clubs, and housing corporations. Over the next 3-36 months, we will be introducing a variety of materials and tools to aid these stakeholders in their efforts to provide a worldclass fraternal experience.

We call upon our alumni and friends to contact the Province Archon where you live (if there is not one in your province, contact us at info@sigmapi.org) and give of your time to work with a local chapter. We know that time is limited in today’s busy society, so if you cannot give of your time, we ask that you make a gift to the Sigma Pi Educational Foundation to help provide the resources necessary to provide for education and training.

We look forward to celebrating with you in New Orleans as we celebrate 123 years of Sigma Pi at Convocation in 2020.

Expansion COLONIZATIONS

QUINLAN HIRED AS DIRECTOR OF CHAPTER MANAGEMENT The Executive Office of Sigma Pi is proud to announce that Scott Quinlan (Fairmont State '95) was hired as the Director of Chapter Management within the Undergraduate Member Services department.

New Colony University of Maine, Orono Colonized on February 9, 2019

In the role of Director of Chapter Management, Quinlan will oversee the services and training offered to undergraduate chapters and develop and execute strategies for improvement, while also supervising the Chapter Management Associate team.

Quinlan has served in various management roles for over nine years and holds expertise in new business development, customer services, human resources, and crafting results-oriented marketing plans to meet goals. In 2012, Quinlan started a company, Team Trivia TN, which promotes a unique brand of trivia and bingo games to local restaurants which in turn, boosts business on slow nights for the establishments. Quinlan’s self-starter attitude and experience in operations and office management make him the ideal candidate for the role.

“Scott’s professional background in entrepreneurship, business development, and customer service will be integral in the building of our service model for undergraduate chapters, their officers and volunteers,” Executive Director Jonathan Frost said. “I am excited to have him join our team and utilizing his experience to continue to grow our service model.”

BORJAS HIRED AS CHAPTER MANAGEMENT ASSOCIATE Joshua Borjas (Cal State Fullerton '17) was hired as a Chapter Management Associate within the Undergraduate Member Services department.

In the role of Chapter Management Associate, Borjas will support the needs of chapters and their volunteers within the north and western areas of the country while creating and maintaining relationships with host universities.

Borjas recently graduated with a bachelor of arts in human communication studies, organizational communication. His impressive background features numerous leadership positions in which he enacted change and made significant improvements to the organizations while in his role.

During his time as President and Chief Executive Officer of the Cal State Fullerton Student Government Association, Borjas advocated for over 42,000 students and lead 35 student leaders while serving on a variety of committees and boards.

Epsilon-Theta Elon University Colonized on April 13, 2019

INTEREST GROUPS Sigma Pi Fraternity prides itself on striving for excellence in everything that we do. We do this by living out our values everyday, and by doing so, we set the standard for fraternities on any given campus. To ensure that our colonies are the best groups on their respective campuses, the Fraternity’s colony development program includes requirements for interest groups petitioning to colonize.

The interest group requirements will drive the group’s growth and become the foundation of future success.

There are resources available to enable interest groups to meet these requirements in a timely manner.

The Fraternity’s Director of Strategic Growth oversees the interest group process, working with the group and its leaders through the precolonization phase. He will continue to guide them as they strive to become a full chapter of Sigma Pi Fraternity.

From the Grand Sage A Message from Grand Sage Joe Palazzolo Brothers, Along with his friends and his family, the whole of Sigma Pi Fraternity continues to grieve Sonny Age (Alabama '08). Sonny’s service as the Fraternity’s Director of Chapter Management led many to believe that he could have a long-term career with Sigma Pi. He brought a wealth of experience to the Executive Office including thought leadership relative to efficiency and operating a 21st Century, technologyforward organization. In addition to his professional knowledge, Sonny had an inspiring spirit and a focused determination when working with our brothers. It is never a bad time to talk to a friend about their mental health and it is okay to ask for help. The national suicide hotline is 1-800-273-TALK (8255).

More than 900 of our young men graduated this spring! Congratulations to all of the brothers who walked across the stage and joined our alumni ranks. While our undergraduate days define what the Fraternity means to each of us, it is in our alumni years that we have the opportunity to experience the richness of our fellowship of kindred minds. A bit of advice for the new graduates - when you settle down in your post-college community, I strongly encourage you to seek out other Sigma Pi alumni living in your area. Meet with them, engage with them, and talk to them about their undergraduate and professional experiences. The benefits of brotherhood last a lifetime and being an active participant in that lifetime brotherhood will pay dividends for you well into the future.

Over the past academic year, I was thrilled to meet with more than 60 of our chapters, colonies, and interest groups. Among these visits were special trips to celebrate Delta-Epsilon Chapter at Seton Hall University’s 50th Anniversary, a visit to our Pfieffer University Colony where our men are building a new Chapter and an entire Greek system, having dinner with a group of Epsilon-Alpha Chapter alumni at Kennesaw State, and visiting the young men at Alpha-Nu Chapter at Wake Forest University and discussing their intelligent, well-formed questions regarding the future of Sigma Pi. Thank you to Grand Second Counselor Rhett LaRose (UTSA '08), Grand Fourth Counselor Brian Kurisky (Ferris State '07), and South Atlantic Province Archon Jeff Cline (North Carolina '85) for accompanying me on several of these visits.

I would also like to thank Alpha-Eta Chapter Sage Spencer Zullo (William & Mary '17) for talking to me about his desire to help lead a movement to inspire the Fraternity’s philanthropic efforts towards mental health and related causes. While at Alpha-Eta Chapter, Spencer and his Chapter brothers provided me with an engaging discussion around their Chapter and its position on their campus and then exhibited a true commitment to their fellow man by helping lead an on-campus carnival for disabled individuals in their community. Being present to witness our young men putting the Fraternity’s ideals into action was a powerful experience.

Our undergraduates are committed to the hard work of representing the Sigma Pi Fraternity brand in a climate that is generally hostile towards tradition-based organizations. I implore our alumni to rise up and provide the critical on-site support that our undergraduates need to be successful on today’s college campuses. We are made stronger when alumni live our second obligation, to regard the Fraternity with a spirit of sincerity and respect and give earnest consideration to its teachings and ideals, in the presence of our undergraduates. Living life and acting in a manner worthy of emulation is the type of generational mentoring that is unique to organizations like ours. As alumni, we should show our undergraduates what it means to at all times be a gentleman and use moderation in all things. By doing so, we will continue to make Sigma Pi Fraternity stronger tomorrow than it is today.

Since 1897, Sigma Pi Fraternity has been molding boys into men and producing qualities that you won't find anywhere else. Sigma Pi has already become a huge part of my life in the short amount of time that I've been a brother. Feature The #whyibelieve campaign revolves around the idea of “if Sigma Pi didn’t exist, where would I be?�

This campaign captures the positive influence being in a fraternity has had on your life, and is centered around the idea that there is more to the fraternity experience than meets the eye. Being in Sigma Pi creates opportunities that may not have been presented otherwise and we want to showcase this throughout the campaign.

In this section, we gather some of our favorite submissions since the campaign launched on Founders' Day 2019.

Sigma Pi gave me unique leadership opportunities and the ability to grow alongside great men. It provided a home during college and has continued to be a system of support since graduation. If I didn't make the decision to join Sigma Pi, I honestly don't know where I'd be today.

Rochester Tech '61 My granddad told me to be careful of the friends you make, you'll be stuck with them the rest of your life. 58 years after pledging with my brothers at Beta-Phi Chapter, he was absolutely right! Through all the years those friendships founded and bound in Sigma Pi have endured and enriched my life. We still communicate and mark each others milestones. It has made for a good ride through life!

Sigma Pi started out as a crazy idea to pledge with the guys living down the hall during my freshman year at Seton Hall University back in 1986. I rushed a number of fraternities but there was something about this group that was different. They were diverse before diversity was ever a priority. With these men, it was never about the letters on your chest, rather the quality of the person and what you brought to the brotherhood. It was about a bond that in 1986 was said to last a lifetime. Now, over 30 years later, I am helping organize a 50th celebration that will bring together from all over the country, the men from Delta-Epsilon Chapter. A bond that does indeed last a lifetime and when we get together again, it is as if we had never left.

Being a member of Sigma Pi has opened doors for lots of opportunities for me.

Since becoming a member in the fall of 2015, I have had the pleasure of continuing to grow as a man. Through hundreds of hours of community service and other volunteer opportunities, I have seen what just a little bit of time and effort can do for people in need. I have been able to make lifelong friendships with people I would have never met before.

I believe in Sigma Pi for so many reasons, and the experiences that I've had in the Fraternity have been unbelievably beneficial. I have made friendships that are lifelong and have learned so much from my Fraternity experience. Because of this, I am more confident, outgoing, and an experienced leader. I came to Sigma Pi to make friends, but what I got was so much more. I have brothers for the rest of my life and have gained connections and experience that will help me immensely beyond my college experience.

I believe the unity of brotherhood is unwavering. When I was in a neardeath car accident, leaving me with a disability, I believed in the brotherhood... and they believed in me. I continue to believe and have incorporated the values into my daily life, and I attribute my 'grounding' and success to my experience.

When I first joined my Chapter I was quiet and a bit awkward. I did not have the experience or equipment to be a leader. However, my brothers helped me grow and gave me a firm foothold to better my life. They taught me how to be the leader I am today. I am now the president of the Theta-Phi Chapter of Sigma Pi. If my brothers didn't push me to be better and come out of my shell. I would not have been able to grow into the better man I am today.

Wisconsin-Platteville '17 I believe in Sigma Pi because without this Fraternity, I would not be the man I am today. My college experience has been completely shaped by the ideals and obligations taught to me by Sigma Pi. Before I joined the Fraternity, I was a student and nothing more - I went to class, went back to my dorm, and that was the sum of my college experience for my first two years. I had little to no friends. My first couple years in college were thus extremely lonely and boring until my chance run-in with a brother at a fourth of July event held at our town's local museum. This meeting opened up numerous possibilities for me, even if I did not know it at the time.

Middle Tennessee '15 I had just moved from Knoxville to Murfreesboro, and knew three people in Middle Tennessee. Needless to say, it was awful... until I rushed and found a group of guys that I could cut up with, work with, and have fun together. At the end of the day I had their back and they had mine. I wouldn't of enjoyed my college experience without Greek life.

When I entered the University of Rhode Island, it was the first time I had been away from home. Sigma Pi became my family and I treasure my memories of the Fraternity. When the university celebrated the 50th anniversary of the 1964 graduates, I managed to recruit five of my Fraternity brothers who graduated with me to attend. Wonderful times!

In joining Sigma Pi, I gained a network of lifelong connections while obtaining invaluable experience in being an exemplary leader. This Fraternity and its core values shaped me into the man I am today and I will forever be proud to be a Sigma Pi! 5

Sigma Pi Fraternity truly represents fellow men united in brotherhood. When I pledged to Beta-Tau at Valparaiso, I soon learned that I had gained friends that I would never lose.

Through good times and bad, through personal struggles or quarrels between each other, I knew that I could rely on each of the men of my Chapter. These men gave me the opportunity to become a better person by teaching me how to deal with different personalities patiently as a leader, giving me the opportunity to become an active member of my community, and bestowing upon me the satisfaction of serving a purpose for something and someone beyond myself. Observing other fraternities, I notice that they do not evoke the selflessness, hospitality, and integrity that I see from Sigma Pi. Without Sigma Pi, my experience in college would be severely shallow due to the absence of friendship and personal development I would otherwise receive from Beta-Tau. I am honored to call any Sigma Pi my brother because of how much this organization has rewarded me in my short experience as an undergraduate.

My only regret is that I did not join sooner.

Awards Season During the 2018-19 academic year, many Sigma Pi chapters, colonies, and brothers across North America took home awards at their university recognition events. Sigma Pi is proud to acknowledge the success of those who achieved their goals this year and advanced their quest for excellence.

Bridgewater State Eta-Eta Chapter

Francis Raboy ('17) and Alexis Montiero ('19) were recognized by the Bridgewater State community with the Impact Award for their student leadership, while Lucas Bentes ('16) won Bridgewater’s Best.

Cal State Dominguez Hills Eta-Iota Chapter

Eta-Iota at Cal State Dominguez Hills was awarded the Standards of Excellence Trophy.

FDU-Metropolitan Epsilon-Xi Chapter

Epsilon-Xi was recognized for many awards, including the Community Service Event of the Year for “Feeding the Homeless” and the Social Event of the Year for “Howl Many Licks."

Alejandro Zapata ('19) received the “Knight on the Rise” award.

Fitchburg State Eta-Tau Chapter

Colin McShane ('18) of Eta-Tau Chapter received the Kruczek Award, given to an athlete who exhibits tremendous courage and spirit when facing adversity.

East Stroudsburg Beta-Psi Chapter

Beta-Psi Chapter was recognized by the East Stroudsburg Fraternity and Sorority Life community as the Most Improved Chapter on campus.

Middle Tennessee Theta-Omega Chapter

Theta-Omega also won the 2019 Greek Week along with Alpha Delta Pi and Phi Beta Sigma.

Additionally, Theta-Omega Third Counselor Drew Carpenter ('18) (and IFC President for Middle Tennessee) was recognized with the Paul Cantrell Fraternal Excellence Scholarship.

Awards Season Detroit-Mercy

Gamma-Alpha Chapter The Chapter was awarded for their academic excellence by having the highest Fraternity GPA.

Wisconsin-Oshkosh Gamma-Mu Chapter

Gamma-Mu at Wisconsin-Oshkosh was awarded the Chapter of Excellence award. Congrats!

Montclair State Iota-Iota Chapter

Lee Tamburello ('17) received the Greek-affiliated Book Grant of $500 for academic leadership shown in and out of his Chapter, Iota-Iota.

Stockton

Iota-Upsilon Chapter Anthony Alonso ('17) was recognized with the Greek Leader of Distinction award from Stockton Fraternity and Sorority Life.

St. John’s

Iota-Tau Chapter Iota-Tau continued their dominance on St. John’s campus, with a fourth consecutive IFC Fraternity of the Year award. Additionally, the Chapter was recognized for Outstanding Leadership Involvement, Brotherhood Development, Outstanding Alumni Cultivation, and Outstanding Interfraternalism. Brothers Nicolas Bautista ('18) - IFC Outstanding New Member Award - and Dominick Pintavalle ('16) - IFC Man of the Year Award - were also recognized.

Valparaiso

Beta-Tau Chapter Beta-Tau was awarded the most improved GPA award on the Valparaiso campus and Sage Mike Heiberger ('17) was honored for his work.

My Contributions and #whyibelieve A Glimpse Into the Reasons That I Choose to Give Back to Sigma Pi

few days back, Chris Carter (Middle Tennessee ’08), Director of Communications at the Executive Office, called me. He was calling to ask me to write about 400 words for the summer issue of The Emerald. My topic was to be “why do I give.” Why do I give of my time, my money, and my energy to Sigma Pi? I was more than a bit surprised that of all folks he was asking me. Even at that moment, driving down the road talking with Chris I could think of dozens of guys that could and should be writing on this topic for the Emerald. Chris prevailed and I agreed.

Then my work began, and I needed to answer the question "why do I give?" I thought about this for a while and then it dawned

on me. I give because I believe. I know it might sound corny or contrived to some of you reading this. But, it’s true. I give because I believe in the past. I feel a need to honor those that have come before me. I want to return to Sigma Pi some of what has been given to me; opportunity, friendship, and experiences.

Meet brothers outside your normal scope. At some time in your life, one or more of these brothers you meet will prove to you why this is a brotherhood. I go to every event that I can; they offer amazing times. I give to honor those from my present such as Bo Plyler (Southern Arkansas '77), Fred Salmu (Wayne State '89), Jeff Biondi (Nevada '84), Les Wright (Murray State '68), and PGS John Williams (Widener '85).

Then, I give because I want those who come after me to have all the experiences and opportunities that I have been afforded and more. I want them to see and experience it all. For this to happen I have to give my time, money, and effort. The great part is that it doesn’t feel like an effort, it’s a pleasure, and it’s an honor. I can’t wait to get to Mid-Year or Convocation and see old friends and meet new friends. Folks like Tyler Gentry (Southern Arkansas '15), Ben Sorteberg (Salisbury '14), Adam Swope (West Chester '98), Alexander Pettigrew (Indiana of Pennsylvania '15), Christian Miele (Towson '00) are brothers I’ve met through the conferences and cherish our friendship.

I give because I need to give and because I want to give.

Otherwise, I would be ashamed of myself for not giving back. I believe that I have taken much more than I have given.

Here’s one parting note that most don’t know. When I started college at Southern Arkansas University, I had no intention of joining a fraternity. I definitely was not going to join Sigma Pi. I know this seems a tad strange but here’s the rest of the story. My older brother James Cozart ('77) was attending the same University and was already a member of Sigma Pi. As it so happened, he and I didn’t exactly get along great at that time.

I really didn’t want to be attending school in the same place as him. No way was I going to join the same Fraternity. But then, one of the greatest things happened to me. The other members

of Sigma Pi at Southern Arkansas University began to recruit me. They sought me out. They encouraged me. I explained that this was not something that I wanted to do. They persisted. My big brother David Hill ('77), Larry Smart ('77), Bo Plyer, and Dan Grantham ('77) would not take no for an answer. It turned out to be one of the smartest decisions of my life. filled with the greatest friendships and most amazing experiences. The good news is that my relationship with my brother James has continued to improve and get stronger as the years have gone by. He and I share a bond of two brotherhoods.

I give because I owe all of these folks, and all of these are the reasons #whyibelieve.

Charitable Giving After Tax Reform

R

ecent tax reform changes to the standard deduction and itemized deductions may affect your ability to obtain an income tax benefit from charitable giving. If you can still itemize deductions on your federal tax return, you can generally deduct your gifts to qualified charities within certain limits. However, many itemized deductions have been eliminated or restricted, and the standard deduction has substantially increased from prior levels. For example, the standard deduction for a married couple filing jointly is now $27,000 for tax year 2019. This means, you would need total itemized deductions greater than $27,000 for any incremental charitable contributions to have any tax benefit. But there is still one tax benefit that you can take advantage of for charitable contributions, even if you are not able to exceed the standard deduction.

If you are 70 ½ or older and required to take a required minimum distribution (RMD) from your IRA, you can use this to make a taxfree charitable donation, called a Qualified Charitable Distribution or QCD. The distribution must be one that would otherwise be taxable

to you and must be sent directly to the charity. You can exclude up to $100,000 of these QCDs from your gross income per year. And if you file a joint return, each spouse can exclude $100,000. However, you cannot deduct QCDs as a tax deduction, because this is excluded from your gross income. But instead of paying taxes on the distribution from your IRA, you don’t have to declare this as income. So in cases, where you don’t need the income from your IRA, but are required to take a minimum distribution, this can instead be directed to a qualified charity, to avoid having to pay the tax on this distribution. Otherwise RMDs are taxable at your current tax rate that year. QCDs count towards satisfying any required minimum distribution that you would otherwise have to receive from your IRA, just as if you had received an actual cash distribution.

A Look at Companies Owned by Brothers and the Importance of Sigma Pi to Each Collegiate Regalia Kyle Koelbel (Arizona State '06) My story began with the opportunity to fail. Sigma Pi provided me an opportunity to hone my leadership skills through various committee memberships, chairing our housing committee and eventually as Sage of Beta-Kappa Chapter at Arizona State.

It was the early years and my involvement with the small Chapter committees that allowed us the opportunity to learn from errors in budgeting vs. actual costs, experiment with changes to how we managed our property and divided up maintenance requirements, and how we asked for, and implemented, feedback from our brothers to improve our process and experience. It was pulling from those smaller lessons and the understanding of collaborative work with my brothers that I felt confident enough to oversee a 100+ member Chapter and manage a $500,000 annual budget. I learned to take calculated risks, to listen to feedback from members and our community, to make adjustments, to balance input from advisors and members and evolve our approach.

We did not always make the correct choice, but we understood how to take missteps, and learned from them to avoid making mistakes. That skill set paired with developing and managing a half-million dollar budget, training myself to submit monthly

reports, to communicate with internal and external individuals, focusing on the big picture without losing sight of the day to day tasks it takes to achieve those goals, through all that and more I developed a skill set that led me to be hired as the CEO of a 35-year-old company at the age of 26.

Greek State of Mind Mike Restrepo (Monmouth '08) In 2009, I joined with another undergraduate to start one89seven. We spent that summer building a website, designing, and earning money to invest in the company. We promoted our designs through Facebook and e-mail, attended the Mid-Year Leadership Conference, and even drove to chapters to sell shirts out of our trunks. When we graduated, though, we closed the company to focus on our careers. That could have been the end of the story, but I still had an itch to create and sell Greek apparel. A few years later, I was approached by a DeltaBeta Chapter alumnus who understood my vision and was willing to invest his time and experience in me. Together, we started Greek State of Mind.

The experience I gained as a leader in Sigma Pi and what I learned as an entrepreneur from one89seven helped land me in a sales position at W. W. Grainger. I’ve grown with Grainger and I’m still employed by them today. My dream is to grow Greek State of Mind into a full-time career. Creation of the Department of Education and Programs will enhance learning opportunities

his year the Executive Office of Sigma Pi introduced the Department of Education and Programs. As an Executive Office, we feel that the inclusion and creation of this department is a critical stepping stone in educating our members across the country, not only as men of Sigma Pi but as men in general. Over the course of the upcoming 2-5 years, Sigma Pi will provide more resources and tools to the membership, both undergraduates and alumni.

As Director of Education and Programs, I will develop and manage a repository of educational materials for undergraduates, volunteers, and alumni. Before this summer comes to a close we will work to unveil and distribute supporting documents for our volunteers that will include modules and other resources for alumni advisory boards, chapter directors, and province archons.

It will be a busy summer for the Department of Education and Programs as we create resources that reinforce the Plaid Tightrope Program which will include interactive modules and resources the undergraduates will receive August 1st. These supporting programs will serve as a means to reaffirm the policies, expectations, and education for members of Sigma Pi when it comes to drugs and alcohol, sexual misconduct, hazing, and mental health. While these are some of the programs that will be created this summer, we will be focused on creating a pipeline for the next five years of tools and resources that will be most beneficial for our members.

This department will ensure our men are prepared for any and all situations that they may face in the fraternal world and in their lives in general. We will better outline what it means to live a life Summer 2019

Education and Programming of excellence as members can expect to see future materials that better aid them in financial management, diversity and inclusion training, and strategic planning to name a few.

Jacob Camilleri (Saginaw Valley State '14), Assistant Director of Volunteer Education, will be working directly with our volunteers across the country to train and assist them in their efforts to create successful chapters and provinces. Camilleri will work closely with our alumni base to create more educated volunteers that will prove critical as they act as resources for their respective groups. By creating this role within the Executive Office we will better serve the alumni/volunteer portion of our membership across the country with the support they may not have had before.

Russell Kizior (Northern Arizona '17), Assistant Director of Conference and Events, is stepping into his role to implement the new curriculum and programs that will be created in order to better facilitate future conferences and events that will appeal to our membership as a whole. Whether through Mid-Year Leadership Conference, Convocation, Province Workshops, etc. we will be working continuously to make sure that all who attend are more educated and prepared men.

"Overall our goal is to create informed and prepared men whose experience within the organization will transcend beyond their time as an undergraduate and into their lifelong membership of Sigma Pi." There will be many goals for this department, but with persistence in mind, we will accomplish each with the mindset of creating a better national organization.

“Implementing the education department is an essential part of ensuring the growth of the Fraternity,” said Executive Director Jonathan Frost (UMSL ’99). “The benefits our volunteers and undergraduates will receive will be evident in their personal and professional development. The University of Maine Colony has made a big name for themselves on campus since their colonization.

The brothers hosted the inaugural Sigma Pi Winter Classic, where brothers played hockey versus each other. The group has obtained Chapter house for the upcoming school year. With all the momentum and alumni support the Colony is on track to charter by December 2019.

The men of the Pfeiffer Colony have been working tirelessly to start the Greek System on their campus.

They ended the semester strong and are working this summer to transition leadership roles. The Colony is on track to charter in the spring of 2020.

The Plymouth State Colony has been doing great work since colonization. They are getting ready for a community service event where they hope to offer CPR certification to members of the Plymouth community.

The members of the Colony have been working on community service events around the town of Plymouth and the State of New Hampshire. Also, over the past month the Colony participated in a brotherhood retreat along with the initiation of those who went through the new member process this semester. The Colony is on track to charter by October 2019.

Eta-Nu Colony The men of Eta-Nu Colony have been doing great things since colonization at Towson University. Recently they have been working with the Towson Tiger Lilies, a community service organization on campus, for Towson’s TigerThon. The Colony is gearing up for their second round of recruitment and are on target to charter by the end of fall 2019 semester. The Colony members will also be receiving their big brothers from Eta-Nu Alumni soon. Big things are happening at Towson for Sigma Pi.

D

uring the course of the spring 2019 semester, Chapter Management Associates Jacob Camilleri (Saginaw Valley State ’14) and Alexander Pettigrew (Indiana of Pennsylvania ’15) spent a little over two months with me at Elon University. I could not have asked for a better team to support myself and the Executive Office in this endeavor and I would like to thank them for their assistance and devotion in making this expansion project successful. The project began by building a list of interested men. We focused our efforts on working with the university to acquire a spring 2019 interest list from the IFC and also working with other organizations to present at their meetings, this included Panhellenic and Multicultural Organizations.

Due to these efforts, we were able to compile over 300 names within a week.

Thereafter, most of our days were spent in the middle of campus in the Student Center meeting with potential new members. Some days we spent hours in the same area having meetings, but with the three of us there, we were able to accommodate everyone's schedule and ensure we were getting to know the potential new members as best as possible.

After concluding our meetings for the day, we set up interest sessions. These were always an amazing experience because it allowed all of the men to interact with each other and start to build relationships. At the end of the week, we hosted a brotherhood event to ensure the potential new members were interacting with each other even more and beginning the process of building those bonds.

“Trying to start a Fraternity from the ground up is not an easy task and being a part of that process has been rewarding,” said Camilleri. “The men we have at Elon do not want to be the stereotypical fraternity. They are looking to make a change on campus and be the leaders of the University come this fall. I look forward to seeing the colony making strides to become a chapter of Sigma Pi.”

As time progressed, we felt we had the beginnings of a strong colony and we began the officer selection process. This process was done by interviewing each member who wanted to be on the Executive Council, explaining the duties and responsibilities of the positions of interest and determining if they would be a good fit for the position. One of the main factors in selecting the Executive Council was watching how each member interacts within the soon-to-be colony and if they could take on the responsibility and lead the colony to success.

“This year I had the opportunity to work with 27 chapters within Tier II, however, Elon was my first opportunity to see a growth project from start to finish,” said Pettigrew. “Seeing the motivation and aspirations of the young men was something I am truly grateful for having the chance to experience.

I am looking forward to seeing their growth towards success.”

Once the officers are selected, we began the training process in which we shared various resources populated with best practices and any other materials that we felt will assist them in their process of beginning a Colony. In working with the officers one-on-one, we were able to discuss, in-depth, their individual positions and took them through exactly what was expected of them and what they should expect in their new positions. Once we were confident in the Colony’s ability to be successful, we left and headed back to the Executive Office. However, we were constantly working with the officers remotely once the expansion project ended and answered any questions or concerns they had with their positions.

After training had concluded, it was time to colonize the group and start them on their journey to bring the Epsilon-Theta Chapter back to Elon University. The group colonized on April 13th, 2019, and the group will be sitting at 35 men come fall 2019 recruitment.

Undergrad Spotlight: Francis Raboy

A

s a freshman, I got myself into a considerable amount of trouble. I was written up for alcohol violations. I broke several residential policies. I had run-ins with law enforcement, and I made many poor first impressions with respectable people. Week after week, one bad decision spiraled into another impulsive error. My thoughtless behaviors began to mount on my shoulders. Eventually, my carelessness brought me face-to-face with a possible campus eviction.

The senior resident assistant that year was a brother of Sigma Pi. He always wore a purple, digital, camo print quarter-zip sweater with the Sigma Pi letters embroidered onto the right side chest.

One night, I stopped by to say hello to the RA staff on duty as I did most nights. At this point, most of the RA staff became familiar with who I was. I had developed a reputation for being 26

Undergraduate Spotlight the “demon-resident.” The RA on duty was past Eta-Eta Chapter Sage John R. McGowan Jr. (‘15), he said to me, “hey man - you should go out for Sigma Pi.” I hesitated and replied, “umm… I’ll think about it.” The mere hint at fraternity and sorority life made me nervous, so all I wanted to do was escape the conversation.

Prior to college, I had never considered fraternity life. All I had known about fraternities were from films like Animal House.

Fraternities to me were for college-aged men who wanted to congregate in dilapidated homes, ferociously drink and wear togas every night of the week while wearing mysterious Greek letters that no one understood. If I was asked several years ago if I would ever consider joining a Greek organization, I would’ve given a hard no.

A week later I was sitting in my freshman seminar and a blond, long-haired gentleman walked into our class with a longboard.

He skirted past me and sat down behind me, on my right side.

Class passed by like any other day and I struck a conversation with this long-haired gentleman about his decked out longboard when the class had ended. After a few humorous exchanges, we decided to walk across campus together. In the midst of the walk he mentioned, “hey, you should come to our potluck tonight.

We’ll have home cooked food and it’ll be a nice changeup from the mediocre dining hall meals.” The mere thought of a free meal made me agree enthusiastically. Come to find out, the longhaired gentleman was a brother of Sigma Pi. That’s when my gears started churning. I began to wonder if all the Sigma Pi’s on our campus were all as welcoming and warm.

Later on that night, I went to the potluck with a few of my floormates. As I entered the doors, a line of men began to introduce themselves to me with the widest smiles and the most genuine appreciation for my attendance. The room was filled with heavy camaraderie, banter, and brotherhood that drew me closer. By the end of the event, I was sold on attending their upcoming events. It was then that I began to see what I had been missing the whole time. A community of individuals that were in pursuit of a common mission. I wanted to reform myself by being an involved member of the community, to be a campus leader, and to be an individual that wanted to be more than just average.

It didn’t take long before I decided to swear my pledgeship to Sigma Pi. Soon after that, the blond, longhaired gentleman became my big brother, Philip DeSimone (‘16) whom I traveled with to Convocation 2018.

The decision to join Sigma Pi Fraternity has been a transformative experience. I turned myself from a reckless freshman to a gentleman on the Quest for Excellence. The brotherhood

taught me that I wasn’t living for just myself, but living to serve the Fraternity’s mission and the community altogether. My brothers believed in my potential and provided me the support to continuously improve myself. The following semester I asked myself how I could provide value to our Fraternity. At the time, we lacked a dedicated person for our marketing and digital presence. As I am a marketing major and have a strong passion for digital content creation I requested a new chair position to be made. I took the reigns on our social media platforms and revamped it. When elections rolled around, I asked the same question: how can I give back to our Fraternity? It was then that I ran for our Eta-Eta Representative Executive Board position, representing our Chapter in the Interfraternity Council and organizing chapter workshops. For a year, I did my job. I focused on excelling at my positions and performing them to the best of my ability. Another year passed and a new cycle of elections had arrived. I was then nominated by my brothers to be their next president. I was then elected unanimously with no opposition.

As acting Sage of the Eta-Eta Chapter, I began to reflect as to how I had reached my position. It was only a couple years ago that I had lacked direction and was seemingly on a downward spiral.

Sigma Pi and the brothers stepped in and rejuvenated my sense of purpose. It was their belief in me that taught me that serving others builds character, that we must always hold ourselves to a higher standard, and to strive to build up those around us. None of this would have been possible without the Fraternity and the men within it. That is why I believe in Sigma Pi.

Forever Unconquered Eta-Epsilon Celebrates 30 Years

uring the weekend of November 16th, 2018, EtaEpsilon Chapter at Florida State University celebrated 30 years since their original founding on November 19, 1988. Undergraduate brothers, alumni, family, and friends alike made their way to Tallahassee, Florida, not just for a matchup between the Seminoles and Boston College Eagles, but to relish in memories and achievements over the football weekend.

“For months we’ve been planning this, [and after] a lot of money, a lot of calls, and to finally be here and see - I think we have over 60 alumni coming back, and we’ve never done something like this before - it means a whole hell of a lot.” said former Chapter Sage Julian Van Pelt ('16).

Festivities for the weekend kicked off with a reception at The Gathering, located in the College Town entertainment district, just a stone’s throw from Doak Campbell Stadium. There, members of Eta-Epsilon and guests were decked out in their best garnet and gold, where they swapped stories, partook in an auction for the Chapter’s scholarship fund, and highlighted the relationships forged over the tenure as a part of the Florida State and Sigma Pi families.

One of those brothers reveling in the atmosphere was an original founding father, Bill Duncan ('88), who shared his sentiments of the event. “I just knew I wasn’t going to miss this weekend, it’s too special. Too many relationships, and friends, that were started...I knew 20, 30, 40 years down the road, I’d be going to events like this.”

The next day guests got to experience the Chapter’s new house for the first time since they moved in August of 2018. Currently regarded as the eighth largest fraternity house in the country, the new home was a testament to where the Chapter has come since they rechartered in March of 2008. The attendees enjoyed the crisp weather associated with college football game days in the south, adorned in school spirit, music playing, and grills filling the air with barbeque smoke before departing for the gridiron matchup for the Seminoles. Alumni did not miss a step, as if they hadn’t even left their campus years ago.

Regaling each other with tales of yesteryear, active members shared the accolades they’ve racked up amongst their peers in the community in recent years, and most simply, embracing the concept of Sigma Pi at its core, lasting bonds through the years.

As the motto of FSU instills in all its students, “Vires, Artes, Mores — Strength, Skill, and Character,” Eta-Epsilon Chapter has strived to rise as leaders in their fraternity and sorority community, despite being much younger by comparison. Touted as a shining example of the positive contributions fraternity men have to the Tallahassee community by university leaders, the men of Eta-Epsilon have made strides of success over the past 30 years, and we can expect that trend to continue another 30 years and beyond.

The spring semester has shown to be another prolific one. The social events, philanthropy contributions, new members, and brotherhood events have been wildly successful.

Despite their successes, the Chapter has been severely shocked and saddened by the recent death of a Theta-Omicron alumnus, Chapter Director, and finally Director of Chapter Management, Sonny Age (’08). Theta-Omicron is creating an annual philanthropy event in his name to honor his legacy and donate to the Bend Your Knees charity, founded for his own lost younger brother. The Chapter’s 15-year anniversary this fall will also be held in Sonny’s honor.

Iota-Lambda Chapter

Iota-Lambda at Arkansas Tech had yet another strong semester. Iota-Lambda earned the 2018 campus involvement award as well as the highest GPA award. Iota-Lambda chapter helped set up and participated in the Out of Darkness Walk to help raise money for suicide awareness and also won the Greek Dance Battle.

Last year, they graciously accepted the ‚“Chapter of the Year‚” Award from Arizona State University and have yet to slow down. In November, they held their sweetheart competition and appointed four new Orchid Girls.

Their recruitment committee did an incredible job during spring 2019 rush and helped Beta-Kappa gain a respectable group of over 20 new members. Members of Beta-Kappa have continued to maintain grades and their average GPA still remains above a 3.0. They had a lot to look forward to this semester, as their ‚“Sigma Paws‚” philanthropy event, brotherhood camping trip, and formal were all great success.

Alpha-Pi began the spring 2019 semester with the highest Greek Men’s GPA on campus. Founders’ Day was held in March in Jonesboro.

There was a successful dinner and social event with the Chapter and their core alumni in attendance.

They held their first Mental Health Awareness Week on the A-State campus where they partnered with the ASU Counseling Center. The Chapter turned the house into Escape Rooms with mental health themes and had a great turnout. Even though it’s summer they have already prepared for fall recruitment. They are hoping for another terrific semester.

Alpha-Delta has continued to have a reaching impact in the community.

Alpha-Delta has already completed over 1,000 hours of community service through the end of March and has raised over $5600 for charity.

They recently held their annual Luauthemed party which quickly reached capacity for the DJ Snakehips. This did a lot to foster brotherhood and was a great experience for their nine newly initiated brothers, the largest spring pledge class in recent memory.

Alpha-Delta has also implemented a new scholarship plan which will hold newly initiated members to a GPA requirement encouraging them to focus on their academics.

Iota-Theta Chapter

Iota Theta has had an extremely successful semester. They raised over $3,000 for Relay For Life, the most out of all the fraternity chapters at Bentley University, and won the school’s annual Greek Week. In addition, they initiated 18 new members who they are more than thrilled to have welcomed into their brotherhood.

This was the largest class they’ve ever initiated and it couldn’t have come at a better time. They have 27 graduating seniors in May who they hope will be staying in the area. They are looking forward to a great summer, being able to come back in the fall to continue their large presence in the community, and having a successful recruitment.

Eta-Eta Chapter initiated a combined 14 new members for the fall and spring semester. Alexander Khoury (’12) received Chapter Advisor of the Year. William Tkaczuk (’16) received the Greek Pillar of Excellence Award. Eta-Eta was also awarded the Outstanding Community Relations Award. Timmy Nokeo (’17) was elected as IFC President for the 20192020 year. Eta-Eta elected Student Government President Kyleigh Morin as chapter Sweetheart.

The brothers of Eta-Delta continued to grow and triumph over the academic and personal adversities encountered over the Winter quarter with the zest and zeal that is the hallmark of their brotherhood. To finish off the quarter on a strong note, Eta-Delta Chapter held the inaugural Sigma Sweets, a philanthropic marshmallow treat sales drive to support the Amazing Day Foundation!

While the past several months have been very productive, they were not without fun. The highlight of fun events was a brotherhood trip to Big Bear where brothers were able to enjoy each other’s company without the stress of school!

This year, Theta-Mu has achieved excellence in many areas. Events like T-shirt dances, socials/exchanges, and philanthropies have been scheduled throughout the year thanks to our brothers and faculty. Thanks to brother, Brandon Cuschieri (’17) they are planning another successful ACE week. Their main spring philanthropy aside from ACE week will be their Pie a Pi event they co-host with the sisters of Alpha Delta Pi. They are the current football champions and favorites to win this semester’s basketball and volleyball leagues.

Theta-Mu continues to strive for greatness and cannot wait to see what 2019 has to offer!

Over the fall of 2018, Eta-Iota Chapter at CSUDH hosted “Dodge for a Cure,” their Dodgeball tournament that raises money to find a cure for cancer. Six new members were initiated into the Fraternity, eager to start their quest for excellence. For the spring semester, Eta-Iota Chapter hosted a “March Madness Basketball Tournament” among all Fraternities and Sororities on campus. Eta-Iota Chapter also celebrated 30 years on campus and hosted Orchid Ball, their formal near the end of the semester.

The brothers from Eta-Iota strive to continue their quest for excellence as they remain the best Fraternity on campus.

Epsilon-Nu Chapter has had a successful spring semester. Their Sigma Pi members have fought passionately during this semester’s significant philanthropy events like their own philanthropy event for the Center for Autism and Greek Week that raises money for the University’s philanthropy, Camp Titan. Aside from raising money for great causes, the brothers at Epsilon-Nu are excited to have their new initiates. Also, in the upcoming weeks intramural playoffs will begin and the Sigma Pi members are looking to become intramural Champions in all sports.

The alumni have renovated outdated appliances and architecture to provide a safe, yet attractive environment to all who enter the grounds of the Chapter house. Beta-Omicron will continue to improve and succeed for all semesters to come.

Zeta-Delta Chapter had a fantastic spring semester. Their annual March Madness special needs basketball tournament went flawlessly. All their brothers had a terrific time refereeing, announcing, and most importantly cheering on all the participants. A big thanks goes out to their alumnus, Mark Reister (’99), for allowing them to keep running this tournament every year. Their brotherhood has gotten far stronger this semester with frequent trips up to Gross Reservoir where they grilled out and strengthened their relationships as brothers.

Eta-Upsilon is continuing to demonstrate a newfound excellence.

They won the Chancellor’s Cup and Best Chapter Values. They also had two outstanding individuals recognized by the order of Omega.

Jonathan Phenix (’17) was awarded Outstanding Leader, and Andrew Rabizadeh (’19) was Best New Initiate.

The brothers made it to the IFC Basketball Finals. Their annual Puppy Love Philanthropy was a huge success raising $1700 for ICARE Dog Rescue.

The brothers are excited about their Orchid Ball Formal in Las Vegas this quarter! They hope to continue rising to the top through sticking to their strong values and hard work ethic.

Eta-Rho has reached new heights.

Their goals this past semester have been to continually increase philanthropic efforts as well as give time to building an even stronger brotherhood. With their annual brotherhood hike and the donations collected from their Thanksgivinger event, they have succeeded in achieving both goals. Helping others has motivated them to grow connections both in and outside of the Fraternity. One of the ways they have agreed to focus their efforts is on Carleton University’s Relay For Life, to make a significant impact in funding research and supporting Canadians affected by cancer.

Gamma-Gamma has been hard at work during the spring 2019 semester.

They have been working on getting more involved on their campus.

They have two brothers serving on their IFC board, Orlando Hatfield (’17) and Cameron Lauber (’18), two brothers serving on Greek week committee, and brother Cole Fine (’17) was recently elected to be the student body president. They also added six new members this semester.

They have a large number of seniors graduating and the next so they will be focusing on rebuilding in the following semesters.

Our brothers enjoyed a very much needed spring break, spending time in places such as Lake Havasu, Whistler, and London. We continue our chapters hunt for our first intramural championship, whether it be in basketball, flag football, or soccer. We’ve taken time over the past couple of weeks to continue our service within the Fort Collins community. Participating in events such as our natural area cleanup or by volunteering at the Realities for Children annual auction. We are also excited for our first ever “4 Square 4 Realities” four square tournament!

Gamma-Alpha participated in philanthropy, service, fundraisers, intramural sports, and brotherhood events. The Fraternities and Sororities at UDM spent a day volunteering at Gleaners together. Their undergraduate members also raised $341.88 for Donate Life. In addition, they fund-raised over $500 which is being put towards the Chapter’s effort to buy the lot next door to expand their house. They plan on fundraising with the KBG members by working Tigers baseball games. In addition, they are planning a flag football fundraiser for the upcoming fall. The Chapter finished the year strong with a Greek Week win.

Beta-Psi Chapter made positive changes to start off the spring semester. Now under new leadership, Wendell Smallwood (’18), they have been working hard as a brotherhood to improve their finances by fundraising in creative ways. They have continued to send brothers to Mid-Year Leadership conference, which was in Kansas City, MO this past winter. As they being to recruit new members for the spring semester, they have been interacting with their campus, the community, and other social groups.

Spring 2019 has been an amazing semester for the brothers of EpsilonEpsilon Chapter. Off the heels of a very successful fall 2018 recruiting class, the Chapter has focused on internal affairs, choosing to emphasize brotherhood events and teaching the younger brothers what it really means to be a Sigma Pi man. Not only having great brotherhood events but as well as making great memories helping their local philanthropy Food For students. Epsilon-Rho Chapter excelled these past few months, maintaining the highest Fraternity GPA on Drury’s campus and increasing participation in all events. Their goals of improving relations with Fraternity and Sorority Life along with many other organizations on campus are being attained, and will be continued throughout the summer and fall. Epsilon-Rho has also been working very hard with volunteering, participating in town cleanups and taking part with other Fraternities in a variety of events. They plan and are excited to maintain their momentum as they look to the future.

Recently Eta-Kappa Chapter initiated four new members to our brotherhood Sam Norman (’19) Seth Norman (’19), Spencer Scott (’19) and Phillip Gottlieb (’19) on April 6th. They also received a visit from the Grand Sage Joseph Palazzolo (Monmouth ’00) and who meet a number of brothers and got a tour of the campus. In most recent news EtaKappa Chapter in the fall of 2019 will now have a lettered house for the first ever to be recognized by East Carolina Greek Life.

Theta-Theta Chapter

Theta-Theta members were able to round up four new members that are on track to becoming a Sigma Pi towards the end of this month. They are also closing in on a proper Chapter house for Theta-Theta that will house 14 members. The house will be able to have their letters as well as the outside will be painted true Sigma Pi. They will now be able to hold meetings there, rituals, events and so on. Larry Bogus (’17) received award Fraternity man of the year on campus. Members plan to hit next semester strong with finalizing their brotherhood points system that will go into effect next semester as well as cleaning up any flaws they see in behavior and bylaws.

FDU-Florham Iota-Phi Chapter

Iota-Phi enjoyed a successful spring semester. Recruitment faired well, blending quality and quantity, inducting their largest class of new members to date. Success spread in regard to community service activities, as brothers planted trees, assisted the elderly, and helped to clean the neighboring community.

Iota-Phi Chapter also hosted its 2nd Annual Sigma Pi Sweetheart Event.

Women from four sororities competed in order to receive two-hundred dollars for philanthropic purposes.

Conclusively crowned was a sister from the Iota-Iota Chapter of Zeta Tau Alpha Sorority. Iota-Phi Chapter thanks everyone for their support.

Theta-Rho has another great semester under their belt; recruiting 13 outstanding new gentlemen to be a part of the Chapter. Additionally, Theta-Rho organized and executed another successful ‚“Stuff-the-Bus‚” event for Grand Valley state’s annual ACE-week, donating nearly 2,000 non-perishables to the grand valley Women’s Center. As they look forward to the next fall semester, the Chapter prepares itself for a new annual philanthropy event they are eager to begin.

The spring semester for Theta-Nu has been exciting and overall helpful to the growth of their Chapter. They have been getting very involved in the rest of the greek community, attending events such as Phi Mu “Phi Hop”, Sigma Kappa “Ultraviolet Week,” and Delta Gamma “Anchor Splash.” They also had a successful Frontier Fiesta which included their performance and tailgate, where they were able to interact with many alumni and overall have a great time. They also have been competing in a flag football intramural league, where they document their games for social media. They are excited about the future and believe the Chapter will continue to progress.

Alpha-Phi Chapter had an eventful semester in terms of Philanthropy, including the ACE Project where Alpha-Phi held a cookout for the policemen of Athens. Along with the ACE Project, Alpha-Phi raised $10,462 for UGA Miracle which is a foundation dedicated to children’s cancer. Also with the help of Recruitment Chairs Eric Santana (’17), Blake Tryon (’17), and Connor Logue (’17) along with New Member Educator Dillion Hess (’15), Alpha-Phi initiated eight new members during the spring semester. The recruitment committee is looking to build a large pledge class for the fall as recruitment has begun already.

At the end of the year they had about 15 undergraduate members graduating. Both formal and their yearly philanthropy event mentioned in the previous Emerald were this past semester. Formal was on the 12th of April and their philanthropy event was on the 28th of April. They participated in Chi Omega’s March Madness yearly philanthropy event and the guys had a great time.

Theta-Epsilon Chapter of Indiana University of Pennsylvania is every excited to see what this upcoming year has to offer. Recruitment Chair put together a promising schedule that has attracted possible new members in record numbers. Sigma Pi members have been involved during this process to insure these new members have the qualities and characters to advance their Chapter. In addition, the ThetaEpsilon Chapter has a heavy focus on education. Scholarship Chairman, Alex Sherrow (’17) has rewritten their scholarship plan with the intention to influence brothers and new members to the importance of academics.

Xi Chapter welcomed a fall pledge class of 18 and a spring pledge class of seven. With an uneventful fall semester due to problems with Fraternity Life at Iowa, Xi Chapter made sure to get it’s momentum back by hosting their annual Lady in Red date party, mom’s/dad’s weekend and beginning to pursue housing opportunities that have been made available to the Chapter. Xi Chapter also brought a good group of brothers to Province Archon for the Heartland Province, hosted by Sigma Chapter at Iowa State University. This upcoming fall, the Chapter is looking forward to a great week of recruitment and trying out new ideas for philanthropy.

Sigma Chapter is looking to close out the year strong. The Chapter received as a whole a 3.02 GPA first semester and look to be even stronger second semester. The men of Sigma have been staying plenty busy with community service events, academics, athletic events, and also the annual Greek Week. Many members participated in Greek Week to celebrate the great Iowa State Sorority and Fraternity Community! Finally in March, the Sigma Chapter met with the men from Xi and Iota-Zeta Chapters for the annual Providence Archon. The men had a great day of workshops and obtained great information regarding Sigma Pi.

Beta-Delta Chapter

Beta-Delta Chapter had a couple philanthropy events in fall of 2018.

Donating all proceeds to The Amazing Day Foundation, their events helped raise awareness for mental illness and suicide prevention. During their first event they stood in front of a heavily trafficked area on campus selling white flags. Students who donated were able to write on the flag a name of someone they know that has suffered from either mental illness or suicide, they were then able to stick the flag into the ground where everyone could see it as they walked to class. During the other event they sold donuts for donations of a dollar to hungry students as they walked past.

Iota-Rho has had a fantastic year in all aspects and is looking forward to celebrating the five-year local founding date later this month.

Brother George Colarullo IV (’18) recruited strongly, bringing in the most final sign signatures in recent history this past semester. ACE Project has been a huge success, bringing over 150 people to the therapy dog event. In addition, the dedicated EC has been working hard to bring new and exciting events next fall. They are sad to say goodbye to their seniors, but know they are destined for greatness, and look forward to bringing in the new members next semester.

This spring, Epsilon-Beta Chapter hosted the second annual Sigma Pi Pig Roast. The brothers were very excited for the event, and enjoyed a great day at Keeneland. They had Blue Door BBQ cater the event, and invited all of the Kentucky Chapters to join them in betting on some horse races.

The brothers also enjoyed catching up with brothers from other chapters.

Overall, the event was a great time and they can’t wait to host it again!

During the Month of April, ZetaOmicron Chapter hosted a Donate Life registry on campus, volunteered to run Fish Fries every Friday for Lent, and made Easter Egg hunts for children whose families are going through hardships. The selected families are generally those going through a loss of a loved one or terminal illness, and they receive a personal letter from the Chapter.

Second Counselor Sean Bleicher (’18) organized a campus-wide pig roast for ACE. He and many other brothers are involved in year long competitionvehicle projects. Congratulations to all those who presented their projects on April 9th at Lawrence Tech’s Unveil!

The brothers at Zeta-Mu have been enjoying a successful spring semester.

They currently rank 5th (out of 42) in terms of cumulative GPA for fraternities on Michigan State’s campus! Throughout the semester they enjoyed numerous brotherhood events for the Super Bowl, Founders’ Day, and of course March Madness where the Spartans made it to the Final Four. In early April, the brothers headed to Toronto for their formal. A great time was had by all! They looked forward to initiating their 11 man Mu-Alpha pledge class! Eta-Phi Chapter of Miami University in Ohio welcomed its new executive board this past November. The Fraternity’s new Sage Joe Levitt (’17) successfully led the Chapter through recruitment resulting in a 30 member pledge class. In these remaining weeks of the New Member Process, Eta-Phi looks to increase its GPA to exceed new school standards.

This spring Zeta-Epsilon Chapter hosted their 35th Orchid Ball and reunion in which approximately 200 brothers and dates attended.

At the reunion the alumni met to go over further house renovations and funding, as only the third floor has been renovated thus far. They have one masters and three undergraduate brothers graduating this semester.

Their numbers are rising though as they currently have a pledge class of five. Quite a few brothers plan to stay in house for the summer and will be taking classes and working in town.

Theta-Omega Chapter of Sigma Pi had a great spring semester. To kick off the semester, Sigma Pi hosted an alumni night on the Fraternity’s Founders’ day. Brothers had a chance to meet and catch up with alumni of the Fraternity. The Sigma Pi members have also participated in two philanthropy events thus far. Sigma Pi and Alpha Delta Pi volunteered at the Second Harvest Food Bank of Middle Tennessee and sorted approximately 5,000 meals for the Middle Tennessee area. Sigma Pi and Alpha Omicron Pi participated in Adopt a Highway and helped clean up Memorial Boulevard.

Sigma Pi also hosted the See Spot Run race during the semester.

Alpha-Rho Chapter from Missouri State University in Springfield, Missouri re-chartered in 2012. Since then the Chapter has grown to 92 members, and they are thriving on campus and in their community. The philanthropy of Alpha-Rho is Route 66 Pet Rescue. Each semester, Alpha-Rho hosts an event where they raise money for the foundation, and find homes for rescued pets. Recently, Alpha-Rho Chapter led in community service hours throughout the Fraternity and Sorority Life community.

Delta-Beta Chapter initiated 11 new members this spring semester coming off of a system-wide suspension by the university. Christopher Curran (’18) was elected as the treasurer of Greek Senate at Monmouth. Brian Leon (’18) was elected as IFC President fro the 2019-2020 school year. DeltaBeta Chapter has spent much of this semester fundraising for their philanthropies via events as well as social media campaigns. Delta-Beta Chapter has continued their tradition of maintaining excellent relations among other organizations on campus.

Delta-Rho Chapter in Morehead, Kentucky has continued their goal of trying to be more involved on campus. This past semester the Chapter participated in numerous philanthropy events, as well as participating in multiple intramural sports. The Chapter is working very hard to improve their recruiting strategies. Sage Chris Ciccheti (’18) and the new members of the EC attended Mid-Year, and brought back some new strategies for recruiting from some different chapters. The members of the Chapter are looking forward to making this semester great.

During the spring semester of 2019, Beta-Iota has focused on strengthening their brotherhood and improving their name on campus all while maintaining academic excellence. Notable events from this semester include the spring formal trip to Lake Havasu, the brotherhood camping trip, and the participation in campus-wide events like philanthropy events and intramurals. The undergraduate brothers also welcomed 10 new members of the Delta pledge class who recently initiated.

Over the past semester Sigma-Pi has had many brotherhoods such as weekly top golf outings, pistons games, and went to a tigers game today. They had three socials with Alpha-Sigma-Tau and two with Alpha-Delta-Pi. Sigma Pi also took part in a philanthropy event hosted by Phi-Sigma. Another thing they did this semester was host a meat-fest at the house with alumni where they had a cook out. They had their Formal at Petruzellos Banquet Hall. Lastly, they were involved in their school’s Greek Week.

Gamma-Upsilon successfully initiated seven new brothers at the beginning of this spring semester and took on three new members. The Chapter is taking advantage of the on-campus momentum they have built from previous semesters to push their ACE project, a week-long series of events where they connect and give back to the community that supports Murray State. Partnering with Donate Life for the week, they have been signing people up to become registered organ donors. They also partnered with the group, Lotus, who help raise awareness and provide resources for children who are sexually assaulted in the Purchase Area of Kentucky.

As the semester comes to an end, Alpha-Mu Chapter enjoyed successful fall and spring semesters.

As a Chapter, they still retain the reputation of having the highest GPA on campus amongst all Fraternal organizations. After a great Founders’ Day celebration, they are looking forward to hosting their annual charity barbeque dedicated to their fallen brother Stivel Ramirez (’14).

They continue to hold a strong presence on campus and around the city of Newark by hosting many oncampus events and giving back to the community by participating in many volunteering events throughout the semester.

The Sigma Pi members of Zeta Chapter have been hard at work producing an environment full of culture and brotherhood. Brothers took part in a day full of paintball, a weekend retreat, and an early easter brunch for the many mothers that could make the drive. An informal yearbook has been created to provide graduating brothers the opportunity to cherish those around them during their time with Sigma Pi. A campuswide pig roast will be held early in the fall of 2019 to celebrate the beginning of a new academic year and provide an event for the alumni to come enjoy some good food!

The brothers of Theta-Eta has had a semester dedicated to advancing the Chapter and continues to do so. Recently, the Chapter’s floor hockey team took second place overall and they are well on their way to winning the President’s Cup. Their soccer and softball teams continue to play vigorously. As for the upcoming weeks, their fundraising and philanthropic efforts continue throughout the semester. One of note, is their Firefighter Day where ThetaEta Chapter dedicates a cookout for the local Firefighting Squadron. The event is public and the brothers of the Chapter are looking forward to it and hope to see everyone there!

The brothers of Theta-Phi Chapter went on a retreat to Linglestown Paintball Park in Linglestown, Pennsylvania. They spent about seven hours there playing on four courses.

The retreat was a great way for all of the brothers to get closer with each other. The paintball park gave them a discount on the total price. The brothers of Theta-Phi Chapter plan on going to this paintball park for years to come.They have also started to sell raffle tickets to sell to the community to raise money for the ALS Association. The winner of the raffle won $250, while second and third won $100 each. The rest of the money was donated to the ALS Association.

For Thon 2019, they were paired with the amazing ladies of the Delta Zeta sorority, where their brotherhood and their sisterhood stood for 46 hours, raising money for pediatric cancer. Their brothers have been active in the community, with one of their favorite acts of service being playing hockey and basketball with the inmates of S.C.I Benner Correctional Institution. They look forward to continuously developing their members in the pursuit of personal and academic excellence as Theta enters into the fall of 2019.

At Rowan University Zeta Chi Chapter, the semester was superb.

Brotherhood at this Chapter is held to a high standard and to help strengthen that, they have hosted two brotherhood events so far. They have also been very active in community service and fundraising. They will be attending Relay For Life and they held an Apple Air Pod raffle. This year the Chapter has added 22 new members into the Fraternity. They currently have the most brothers, 92, for a Sigma Pi Chapter in New Jersey. They plan on participating in a community service event called ‚“Fans In The Stands.” This is an annual event that they look forward to every year.

Gamma-Eta has been up to a lot recently. The members have been actively involved in the Embrace Kids Foundation at Rutgers University.

Many brothers have gone to events with the children they sponsor and have made lasting impacts on their lives and will continue to do so.

Fraternity recruitment has also just finished up at Rutgers University and Gamma-Eta is proud to welcome six prospective new members to their Chapter. In the coming future Gamma-Eta is planning holding a brotherhood bonding event at a local paintball arena. Gamma-Eta wishes the best to all the brothers of all other Sigma Pi chapters across the country.

Theta-Beta has been up to plenty of things since the last report the fall pledge class ended with a total of seven new members and all of those new members got new positions such as community service, philanthropy, ect. Theta-Beta raised the most money during Relay For Life during the event which was about $550 dollars.

There is a new member class for the winter semester which includes three potential members. Theta-Beta also won the Greek Week competition during the winter semester for the 2nd time in three years winning with Phi Sigma Sigma. They also won the IM soccer Championship yet again.

A large group of their local brothers will be working at a charter & water sport company in Ocean City, Maryland together. Iota-Sigma Chapter was extremely busy this semester. The new executive board came back from Mid-Year and successfully transitioned to their new positions. They also initiated a very strong Theta class in April. Iota-Sigma Chapter participated in many sorority philanthropies this spring, such as Kappa Delta’s Paintball for PCAA. The Chapter placed first in both Sigma Delta Tau’s flag football philanthropy, and Gamma Phi Beta’s Moonball philanthropy. Iota-Sigma Chapter also held their 5th annual Dog Days philanthropy. The Chapter raised over $6,500 for the Tampa Bay Humane Society, making this their most successful philanthropy to this date.

Over all Epsilon-Kappa Chapter had a great year and are hoping for even better semesters come.

Over the semester the brothers of Sigma-Pi Iota-Tau Chapter have worked on several philanthropic events. These events included Sigma Shamrocks, which was run in efforts to raise money and awareness for Muscular Dystrophy. In total, they raised $670 to help this incredible cause. This was a weeklong event in which several brothers helped run the table and would go around asking students to support. Overall it was a great event and something they did as a Chapter will continue to do annually.

Theta-Chi Chapter is also proud to announce they currently hold the highest GPA out of all Fraternity and Sorority Life. This is a huge accomplishment for the brothers and they hope to continue this academic success for the following semesters.

Lastly, Theta-Chi Chapter has planned the Annual Candle Light Vigil for Suicide Awareness which took place the week of April 22nd.

Starting in the fall of 2018, undergraduate brothers of Theta-Psi helped the freshman of University of Southern Indiana move into their dorms, assisting housing and residence life. For the first time in Theta-Psi history, the undergraduate brothers hosted two different philanthropy events in the fall semester. A very successful corn-hole tournament was organized in support of the Soldier Dogs philanthropy.

Additionally, their undergraduate brothers hosted the second annual event “Fraturday Night Live,” a skit show in support of the Amazing Day philanthropy for suicide awareness.

Iota-Upsilon Chapter welcomed Zeta Class to the brotherhood, including Brothers Kyle Davis (’18), Indrit Istrefi (’18) and, Kyle Walsh (’18). At the beginning of their spring semester Iota-Upsilon sold bracelets for various charities, over $1,100 was donated.

Fraternity life has been thriving recently for Theta-Sigma at Ursinus.

The recently initiated pledge class consisting of eight new brothers have been acclimating well and with that, a great sense of camaraderie has encapsulated the Chapter. During the fall semester, the Chapter had the distinct privilege of assisting the 6th Annual Wolf Pack Fights Cancer Benefit in the honor of Nicky Rutherford who passed away in 2018 after a courageous battle against cancer. With new leadership at the helm, Theta-Sigma is primed to excel in its endeavors to promote a positive influence in the local community.

Beta-Tau Chapter endeavored to be recognized as the most improved chapter on Campus this spring.

They are on track to accomplish this considering Valparaiso University recognized their Chapter as having the most improved cumulative GPA for the last two semesters. Their brothers look forward to collaborating with their fellow Fraternity and Sorority community members and become a more active part of their community.

Beta-Pi is proud to announce that they finished a successful recruitment where 13 rushees converted into new members on February 3rd, 2019. Their new members are an exceptional group of students at the University of Virginia who are actively involved in athletic programs, professional groups, and volunteer work. This semester, two of their brothers studied abroad in Europe to develop their skills. As well, brother William Brayshaw (’16) summited Mount Everest in June of 2018 and returned from his voyage last week. They are happy to welcome him back after his grueling journey.

During the fall semester of 2018, the Chapter had a good outcome with four new brothers. Philanthropy during the semester went very well. They conducted multiple events throughout the semester. They cleaned a mile of roadside trash through the town, handed out veteran’s day koozies during a home football event, and supported suicide awareness on campus by handing out ribbons and talking to students. As a whole Fraternity, they worked a Talladega race for a fundraiser to help, as well as help the Talladega Superspeedway employers with more bodies.

Alpha-Eta Chapter recently initiated 10 fine gentlemen last December.

They are continuing to grow with a spring pledge class of seven. With this many new brothers, their Woodstock philanthropy event should be great success. Woodstock has been a Chapter tradition for the last six years since Jared Vallejos (’14) joined the Fraternity. Jared was born with cystic fibrosis, a hereditary disorder that leads to frequent respiratory infection. The Woodstock event sells t-shirts that they all tie-die together.

The profits from the shirts then get donated to Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.

Alpha-Nu had a successful spring as they welcomed 23 new members. The men at their Chapter have been hard at work representing the Fraternity in the community! They were able serve over 250 meals to those in need with St. Timothy’s Episcopal Church and constructed four houses with Habitat for Humanity. They hosted an event where they collected old books from brothers, other organizations, and professors and gave away 700 books. The Chapter looks forward to an eventful summer which includes internships, jobs and vacations.

They are enthusiastic to start the fall semester off by moving further towards their goals for the next year.

On September 2nd, Theta-Tau had the pleasure of helping move first year students into their new homes on campus. Over 2,000 first year students were successfully moved into their dormitories. Also in attendance was the university’s new president, Richard J. Helldobler. Theta-Tau Chapter partnered with brothers of Phi Kappa Tau and Tau Kappa Epsilon, as well as a local chapter of Omega Delta Sigma National Veteran’s Fraternity in order to host a Walk-athon on campus. All proceeds were donated to the Timothy J Piazza Memorial Foundation. We also had say goodbye to brother Daven as he heads out to his first deployment.

Gamma-Iota started this spring off right with some great philanthropy!

Brothers participated in their local Relay for Life event helping the WPI ‚“Colleges against Cancer‚” organization raise over $145,000.

Gamma-Iota Chapter also won 1st place in ‚“Greek Week‚” against all other Fraternity and Sorority organizations on campus! Brothers also held a job search workshop in cooperation with the Career Development Center! They also gave employees at the campus coffee shop giftcards to show some appreciation to keeping students going year after year.

Founders’ Day was largely successful as alumni returned to Madison to celebrate the progress of the Chapter with a gathering at the house and a banquet at the beloved Essen Haus Restaurant and Bar where a variety of delicious German delicacies were served, organized by Joshua Lasday (’16). Spring Formal took place at the Wilderness Resort once again, where under the work of Sage Jack Mueller (’17) and Second Counselor Sameer Pardiwala (’18), brothers and dates were brought to the destination by a private service to enjoy the afternoon at the waterpark. Dinner was held at Buffalo Phil’s Bar and Grille.

Maintain a Healthy Weight Losing excess pounds, and keeping them off, can lower your risk of heart disease as well as various types of cancer.

Get Moving Exercise can help you control your weight, lower your risk of heart disease and stroke and possibly lower your risk of certain types of cancer.

Limit Alcohol The risk of various types of cancer, such as liver cancer, appears to increase with the amount of alcohol you drink and the length of time you’ve been drinking regularly. Too much alcohol can also raise your blood pressure.

Manage Stress If you feel constantly on edge or under pressure, your lifestyle habits may suffer and so might your immune system. Take steps to reduce stress or learn to deal with stress in healthy ways.

Introducing a New

Alcohol Policy

On June 1st, 2019, Sigma Pi implemented a policy that bans hard alcohol exceeding 15% ABV at or on Sigma Pi premises or events.

The purpose of the policy is to prohibit the consumption of alcohol exceeding 15% ABV at or on Sigma Pi premises or events, to limit the consumption of any alcohol at or on chapter premises or events to alumni, collegiate members, and invited guests who are of legal drinking age, and to set for the conditions that must be met in order for alcohol to be consumed at or on chapter premises or events.

Understanding the Policy In any activity or event sponsored or endorsed by a Sigma Pi Entity, including those that occur on or off its Premises:

1 Sigma Pi Entity, members, and guests must comply with all federal, state, provincial, and local laws. No person under the legal drinking age may possess, consume, provide, or be provided alcoholic beverages.

2 Sigma Pi Entity, members, and guests must follow the federal law regarding illegal drugs and controlled substances. No person may possess, use, provide, distribute, sell, and/or manufacture illegal drugs or other controlled substances while on Premises or at any activity or event sponsored or endorsed by the Sigma Pi Entity.

Policies 3 Alcoholic beverages must either be: (1) provided and sold on a per-drink basis by a licensed and insured third-party vendor (e.g., restaurant, bar, caterer, etc.); or (2) brought by individual members and guests through a bring your own beverage (“BYOB”) system.

The presence of alcohol products above 15% alcohol by volume (“ABV”) is prohibited on any Sigma Pi Entity Premises or at any event, except when served by a licensed and insured third-party vendor.

4 Common sources of alcohol, including bulk quantities, which are not being served by a licensed and insured third party vendor, are prohibited (i.e., amounts of alcohol greater than what a reasonable person should consume over the duration of an event).

5 Alcoholic beverages must not be purchased with Sigma Pi Entity funds or funds pooled by members or guests (e.g., admission fees, cover fees, collecting funds through digital apps, etc.).

6 A Sigma Pi Entity must not co-host or co-sponsor, or in any way participate in, an activity or event with another group or entity that purchases or provides alcohol.

7 A Sigma Pi Entity must not co-host or co-sponsor an event with a bar, event promoter, or alcohol distributor; however, a Chapter may rent a bar, restaurant, or other licensed and insured third-party vendor to host a Sigma Pi Entity event.

Attendance at events with alcohol is limited to a 3:1 maximum guest-to-member ratio, and must not exceed local fire or building code capacity of the Premises or host venue.

9 Any event or activity related to the new member joining process (e.g., recruitment, intake, rush, etc.) must be substance free. No alcohol or drugs may be present if the event or activity is related to new member activities, meetings, or initiation into Sigma Pi, including but not limited to “bid night,” “Big/Little” events or activities, “family” events or activities, and any ritual or ceremony.

I have had the opportunity to volunteer as a Province Archon the past six years, as I got involved right away upon graduation.

With minimal time passing from my undergraduate years to the alumni experience, I knew I had some learning and reflection to do to better prepare myself to be an effective volunteer for the Fraternity. I truly feel the impact our undergraduate brothers make in their journeys with Sigma Pi, and this passion fuels my drive to volunteer. Every person in a chapter can make a difference regardless of their position, and I have seen leadership come from the new member of a chapter to the graduating senior in his last month of college. We also have a population of extremely dedicated alumni volunteer who motivate me to be an exemplary Sigma Pi and citizen. Sadly, when we lost our brother Brandon Landau ('11) at EpsilonGamma and our Chapter closed, I felt immediately disconnected and struggled through the grieving process. Thankfully I have had some alumni volunteers from across America pour into me their support and advisement which was what I desperately needed post-undergrad to continue my lifelong membership in this Fraternity. I feel the spirit of Sigma Pi each and every day because of what our undergraduates and alumni members do to work earnestly in our progress forward as a Fraternity, and that is why I believe in Sigma Pi.

I Believe in Sigma Pi! Why? I believe because of the man I am today. I look back on the person I was before college and compare that person to the man I am today and I owe so much to Sigma Pi, from my successful career to the numerous friendships that will stand the test of time.

I volunteer to give back to my fellow brothers. I do not volunteer for my personal gain, I’ve had my undergraduate experience, now it’s time I help make another brother’s experience better.

I hope to influence our fellow brothers in a way that they also become better men in all aspects of their lives. As a volunteer, I truly treasure seeing our brothers succeed in their careers, succeed in their personal lives, have a family, learn a new hobby, and the list goes on.

As a Chapter Director, I hope and pray that my Chapter’s undergraduates will look back at their time in college and also realize just how much Sigma Pi improved them. I know that I can be hard on them and have very high standards, but hopefully, they rise to the occasion and conquer their challenges. I also pray that some also look back, see how much Sigma Pi improved them and then decide to also contribute as an alumnus.

I volunteer because I feel a sense of responsibility, even duty, to give back, with the time and the willingness to listen, the way others did for me as an undergrad. Not to impose any philosophy, but more to be ready to serve those who have questions or concerns. I volunteer to satisfy a thirst for knowledge, as I strive to make each day better than the last by learning from those that led the way before, as well as those that follow after. I volunteer because my brothers will always find my limbs ready. I volunteer because I believe in the men of Sigma Pi - past, present, and future.

Volunteers Province Archons are crucial to the overall success of Sigma Pi. In their role, each Province Archon oversees all parts of the Fraternity (colonies, chapters, alumni clubs, etc.) that are within their geographic area making their role extremely important.

Province Archons are charged as brand ambassadors, and are crucial to the volunteer structure of the Fraternity. Province Archons help train and assist Chapter/Colony Directors in their region, and work directly with undergraduate leaders, other alumni volunteers, and the Executive Office.

Advising for a Local Chapter Supporting local chapters through advisory roles help strengthen the undergraduate experience directly. We feel that one of the keys to a successful organization is the involvement of a core group of alumni advisors to help assist and guide the undergraduates with different aspects of chapter operations.

Sigma Pi’s most successful chapters/colonies have exemplary and dedicated alumni advisors.

Advisory Boards are generally focused on one chapter, but regional boards may be formed if there are two or more chapters that could benefit from the volunteers’ expertise. The Board does not need to be comprised solely of Sigma Pi Fraternity alumni. In fact, when people from outside of the Fraternity are brought onto an Advisory Board, they often bring a great new perspective to the table.

An Advisory Board is a group of volunteers who have limited time for volunteering, but extensive knowledge and expertise that could benefit our undergraduates. Geographically,

Alumni Achievements

Iancu Named US Patent And Trademark Office Director On February 5, 2018 by a vote of 94-0, the United States Senate confirmed California intellectual property litigator Andrei Iancu (UCLA '87) as next director of the US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO). Iancu was nominated by President Trump on August 26, 2017 Iancu attended the University of California, Los Angeles, where he joined Upsilon Chapter of Sigma Pi in 1987.

The new Under Secretary of Commerce for Intellectual Property is currently a managing partner of Irell & Manella LLP’s Los Angeles firm. Iancu’s practice focuses on IP litigation as well as patent and trademark prosecution, his bio states. His clients came from across the technology spectrum, including those associated with medical devices, genetic testing, telephony and video game systems. Prior to his legal career, Mr. Iancu was an engineer at Hughes Aircraft Company.

Iancu has also taught patent law at the UCLA School of Law, and has written and spoken publicly on a variety of intellectual property issues.

Iancu “has a clear understanding of the importance of strong patent rights and a strong US patent system to 58

American innovation, job creation and competitiveness,” said Innovation Alliance Executive Director Brian Pomper.

Throughout his career, many organizations have recognized Iancu for his work. Among his legal community accolades, the Daily Journal, California Lawyer magazine, Los Angeles Business Journal, Chambers USA, Best Lawyers in America, and many others have acknowledged his expertise in commercial litigation and intellectual property law.

Mr. Iancu has also been the recipient of the Patent and Trademark Office Society 36th Annual Rossman Award, the Hughes Aircraft Malcolm R. Currie Innovation Award, and the Melville B. Nimmer Copyright Award.

Mr. Iancu holds a Juris Doctor from the UCLA School of Law. He also has a Master of Science in mechanical engineering and a Bachelor of Science in aerospace engineering, both from UCLA. Iancu was born in Bucharest, Romania. He has lived in the United States since the age of 12. He and his wife, Dr. Luiza C. Iancu, have two children, Ariella and Robert.

Kentucky Thoroughbred Alumni Club Events in Murray, Kentucky this year will include Summer Reunion which will be the weekend of July 19th through the 21st. Murray State’s Homecoming will be the weekend of October 17th to the 19th. They look forward to seeing many brothers at these events.

Alumni Achievements

Joel Weaver (Ohio Northern '66) Ohio Northern University’s Raabe College of Pharmacy honored Joel Weaver (Ohio Northern '66) with the Distinguished Alumni Award on February 22, 2019.

Weaver began his career while working toward his Doctor of Dental Surgery and then completed a four-year residency in anesthesiology. Weaver joined the faculty at Ohio State University and maintained a dual appointment in the College of Dentistry and in the Department of Anesthesiology, where he practiced as a dentist anesthesiologist in the dental clinic and in the hospital operation rooms for 39 years. Weaver is the founding director of OSU’s master’s degree residency program in dental anesthesiology, which is currently a threeyear accredited program.

Adytum on High Past Grand Sage J. Robert Odaniell (SIU-Carbondale ’55) Odaniell entered the Adytum on High on Tuesday, Feb. 19, 2019.

PGS Odaniell was a World War II combat veteran and served under both General George Patton and General Douglas MacArthur.

After the war, he returned to Southern Illinois and enrolled at SIU-Carbondale. He was very involved in campus life as a student organizer and leader. He joined Nu Epsilon Alpha, which became Beta-Nu Chapter of Sigma Pi .

PGS Odaniell served as the Fraternity’s Grand First Counselor from 1962-1964 and as Grand Sage from 1964-1966.

Past Grand Sage Eli R. Sidwell Jr. (Eastern Illinois ’55)

and finally served as the Grand Sage from 1984-1986.

Sidwell entered the Adytum on High on Friday, June 14, 2019.

His devotion to the Fraternity did not stop there as he served on the Sigma Pi Education Foundation Board of Trustees as the Treasurer from 1988-1990, the Vice President from 1990-1992, and the President from 1992-1994. His dedication and hard work were recognized in 1996 as he was awarded the Founders’ Award.

PGS Sidwell served for ten years on the Grand Council, he began in 1976 by serving as the Grand Third Counselor from 1976-1978, the Grand Fourth Counselor from 1978-1980, the Grand Third Counselor from 1980-1982, the Grand Second Counselor from 1982-1984,

Sonny Garrett Age (Alabama '08) It is with deep sadness that we honor the life of Sonny Age (Alabama '08), brother and Director of Chapter Management, who passed away to suicide on March 10, 2019, at only 29 years old. His passing served as a very emotional period for his family, ThetaOmicron Chapter, and the Executive Office staff, as well as volunteers and undergraduates he had been working with throughout his time on at the Executive Office.

During his first three months in his role, he dealt with not only his onboarding process, but also allegations at various chapters, a membership review, and a tragic incident at Ohio University in November. He was on the ground at Ohio within 48 hours to help the undergraduates seek counseling and provide guidance on dealing with loss.

Before his time on staff, Age held a lead role at Infosys-McCamish. In this role, he

oversaw a team of 12 and handled high profile clients and their investments. At that time, Age volunteered to be the Chapter Director for Theta-Omicron Chapter. His experience and knowledge helped guide them to success.

During his undergraduate experience, he served as the recruitment chair and the philanthropy chair. He gained an abundance of knowledge in working with nonprofit associations and how to host philanthropy events, along with gaining experience in networking and recruiting.

Outside of career and his Fraternity experience, Age served as the Parliamentarian Officer for his late brother’s nonprofit charity. It was started after he passed from fighting a stage IV Glioblastoma brain tumor, in an effort to help give back to others in the community that are dealing with the same or similar situations.

re you a fraternity man? Perhaps there is more in that simple question than you surmise.

Just what is your real attitude toward your fraternity, and just where do you stand? Are you self-centered, or are you on the keen lookout for opportunities that make for a better cooperation?

The gist of cooperation, the keynote of fraternalism, is this: To have a common cause, ana then to work the other fellow's way when he won't work yours.

The best cooperator is the man who can get the most pleasure out of doing things the other fellow's way.

In this series, The Emerald committee finds past articles from the archives that are still relevant in today’s fraternal world.

The following article was printed in The Emerald nearly one hundred years ago in January 1920. The article was written by PGS Cyrus E. Palmer (Illinois 1910) and focuses on the critical need for cooperation by the members of the Fraternity.

The individuals of any active chapter may be classified under one of two general headings: Those who go ahead and do what is to be done, and those who sit by and ask "Why wasn't it done the other way?" The first group is learning by experience what fraternal spirit and cooperation really mean to the individual as well as to the common cause; the second group is cheating itself by passing up golden opportunities.

There is unlimited self-satisfaction as well as collective success in cooperation; however, no one who has failed to contribute to the effort can fully enjoy this satisfaction, nor can he possibly possess the proper perspective to appreciate success unless he has been a cooperator in the effects which have led to that success.

Cooperation is then a rather positive measure of fraternalism.

The only possible way to learn to be a cooperator is through active cooperation. Cooperation never fails

through itself, but rather it is the failure of the individual.

From a rather general survey we seem to find that the two dominating brakes on the wheel of progress of the average chapter are (1) Dissension within the ranks, and (2) unresponsive, uninterested alumni.

The active chapter which, through the efforts of it various members, is determined to promote cooperation will never have cause to complain of factions or cliques within its ranks. Moreover, the active member who, during his term of activity absorbs the true spirit of fraternal cooperation, is the man who will develop into the responsive, interested, and ideal alumnus.

One of the great purposes of the education you are striving to obtain as college men is to make you conscious of what you lack. Analyze your status. Determine whether or not you personally lack the elements of cooperation in your makeup. Make it one of your regular habits to look for the good points in the arguments and ideas advanced by your brothers.

If you cannot find some good, you are most likely short sighted, prejudiced, or unwilling to become a cooperator. The man who wants every measure taken by his own rule is generally the person who is eternally kicking-but one who, if he were willing to cooperate, would be a power for good instead of a selfish object of ingrowing sourness and a drawback to that success toward which he may assume his efforts are directed.

No single human being can always be, or hope to be, right in all things at all times. Cooperative effort is very likely to be in the wrong at times; however, the Summer 2019

Archives better the unity of individual interest the less the liability. That person or group of persons who never make mistakes never make anything, and one who sits by while others do and make some mistakes in doing is far worse off than if he had been a party to the errors. He has lost the inspiration resulting from cooperating which is something gained even though some effort may have been misdirected.

Altogether then: Let's boost for the good of the bunch In a big-hearted, cooperative way, Let's not nurse a self-centered hunch, Selfishness never did, never will pay.

In the words of John F. Kennedy, “ask not what your country can do for you—ask what you can do for your country.” We must ask not what Sigma Pi can do for us, but what we can do for Sigma Pi. Nearly a century after Cyrus E. Palmer’s contribution to the January 1920 edition of the Emerald, the need for cooperation throughout the ranks of Sigma Pi is paramount to the further progression and development of the Fraternity experience.

In a time of political turmoil and social strife amongst the masses, it is of utmost importance to ensure that the brothers of this great Fraternity understand that without complete and utter cooperation and willingness to work towards achieving common goals we can never truly progress to reach our fullest potential as a brother of Sigma Pi. After all, it was Robert Browning who wrote: Progress, man’s distinctive mark alone, Not God’s, and not the beasts’; God is, they are. Man partly is and wholly hopes to be.

Progress is what defines us as human beings, as husbands, as fathers, and as brothers of Sigma Pi. Through cooperation, we can reach heights that brothers before us had envisioned. We can be the living embodiment of progress for this brotherhood.

Of course, we as brothers of Sigma Pi cannot achieve cooperation without first prioritizing individual accountability on the part of our brothers as undergraduates and alumni. The very essence of having the ability to ensure you’re holding yourself, as an initiated brother of Sigma Pi, accountable for your actions is rooted within the creed we live our lives by.

Without the ability to hold ourselves to the standards laid out in our creed, how can we expect to be able to cooperate and benefit our fellow brothers and pursue a better future for our fraternity as a whole?

Cyrus E. Palmer used cooperation as a positive measure of fraternalism and an indicator of a healthy fraternity or chapter.

He categorized the individuals of an active chapter as, “Those who go ahead and do what is to be done, and those who sit by and ask, 'Why wasn’t it done the other way?’” By living our morals, obligations, and responsibilities laid out for us as a brother of Sigma Pi, it is absolutely imperative to understand the power of taking initiative in providing a better future for those who are yet to join this brotherhood. Master Yoda from the Star Wars Saga’s once said, “Try not! Do or do not, there is no try.” In other words, your individual accountability in ensuring cooperation in advancing the Fraternity should be entirely rooted in taking action and acting as a living example of what your vision of Sigma Pi is.

Promoting cooperation does not mean mindlessly following the desires of brothers past, it is about working in unison to constantly adapt to a changing environment and ensure the improvement and progression of Sigma Pi at the international and local level. Brother Palmer wrote in 1920, “One of the great purposes of the education you are striving to obtain as college men is to make you conscious of what you lack.” Only through exposure to our peers and willingness to go ahead and identify what has to be done as brothers of Sigma Pi can we reach our fullest potential.

Located in the Seal of New York State (where Iota-Tau is located), it reads “Excelsior”. The Latin term quite literally translates to “higher; always upward”. As brothers of Sigma Pi it is our duty to ensure cooperation throughout the ranks of the Fraternity, undergraduate, and alumni, so that we may reach Excelsior; so that we may reach insurmountable heights. Together, we can do incredible things. Together, we can pave the way for future generations of Sigma Pi. Together, we can be a living embodiment of what our founding fathers envisioned when they founded this Fraternity. Together, we are Sigma Pi.

HGS Curtis G. Shake

HGS Curtis G. Shake (Vincennes 1903) was a noted Indiana jurist, politician, and 72nd Justice of the Indiana Supreme Court, serving from 1938-1946. In 1947, Shake was assigned to Nuremberg in Germany to preside over the I.G. Farben trial, one of the 12 trials for war crimes that the U.S. authorities held after World War II. The robe and gavel above were used by Shake during the tribunal, and were gifted to the Fraternity.

Outside of his legal duties, Shake was dedicated to Sigma Pi. He served on the Grand Council multiple times during his life. Shake was the Grand Fourth Counselor in 1908-1909.

He held the Grand First Counselor position from 1926 to 64

1930. Between 1962 and 1964, Shake was the Fraternity’s Grand Second Counselor. In 1962, he was awarded the Founders’ Award. Shake is one of only six men who have been named as an Honorary Grand Sage of the Fraternity.

His legacy continues as the scholarship in his name is awarded to members of his Fraternity, which is awarded biennially to an initiated member of the Fraternity who has demonstrated superior academic achievement and currently engaged in the study of law. Additionally, the Most Outstanding Province Archon Award is named in his memory, too.
