From Our Chairman Success can only be built upon

a strong foundation…

Dear Sigma Pi Brothers and Friends: Sigma Pi’s new headquarters (pictured on the cover of this Annual Report) officially opens next month in a historic home called the Mitchell House in Lebanon, Tennessee—a suburb of Nashville. Built in 1906, the Mitchell House first saw life as a private residence followed by years as a boys’ school. However by the 1980s, it was abandoned and fell into disrepair. Soon, like so many other grand homes of the bygone era, it seemed doomed to the wrecking ball. But in 1997, a businessman with roots in Lebanon sought to restore the house to its original grandeur. And within a few years, it found new life as the headquarters of a major national corporation and a spot on the National Register of Historic Places. Now it begins a new chapter as the home of Sigma Pi. But how has the Mitchell House survived over 100 years and decades of neglect to become a renovation success story, one of the finest historic homes in all of Tennessee, and headquarters of the premier college fraternity? The answer: it was built upon a strong foundation.

Like the Mitchell House or anything else of enduring value, success can only be built upon a strong foundation. But rather than bricks

and mortar, successful lives are built upon a foundation of good values. And for thousands of young men, the Sigma Pi experience helps instill those foundational values like hard work, loyalty, integrity, cooperation, and charity. It is therefore no accident your support of the Educational Foundation makes the Sigma Pi foundation possible.

Executive Director Michael Ayalon (EO, SUNY Buffalo ‘97), Grand Sage Ed Levesque (HH, Bridgewater State, ’89), and I invite you to join us for the formal opening and dedication of the new headquarters at the Mitchell House on March 29. And for those of you who cannot make the trip to Nashville, we invite you to join us in giving to the Educational Foundation in its current year’s campaign to ensure the Sigma Pi experience (the same experience that helped make you the successful person you are today) is available for the next generation of college men.

The Mitchell House stands as testament to the value of a strong foundation. And our successful and loyal alumni stand as a testament to the value of Sigma Pi as an enriching experience in the lives of young college men. The Impact of Your Gift Each year, the Sigma Pi Educational Foundation provides nearly $100,000 in support of the educational pursuits of the Sigma Pi Fraternity and its members.

Such support would not be possible without the generosity of alumni and friends like you. Here are just a few of the programs your support made possible in 2013:

Scholarships

Grants

Traditional scholarships remain a core of the Foundation’s activities. In 2013, the Foundation awarded 71 scholarships to individuals totaling over $50,000. These ranged from scholarships awarded to brand new initiates for their outstanding scholastic achievement during their associate (“pledge”) membership period to fellowships given to alumni brothers working on advanced graduate and professional degrees.

The Foundation also awarded nearly a dozen grants to support or allow individuals to attend national and regional educational conferences and workshops, including the Undergraduate Interfraternity Institute, a five-day conference of the North American Interfraternity Conference that brings together fraternity men and sorority women from across the continent to create opportunities to explore, define, and enhance their leadership skills, personal awareness, commitment to their fraternity or sorority, and grow to expect values based action from themselves and those they lead.

Mid-Year Leadership Conference: The Foundation provided grant funding to support the Fraternity’s Mid-Year Leadership Conference (“MYLC”). Held every February in Saint Louis, Missouri (strategically centered to facilitate travel by men from across the US and Canada), the weekend-long event provides training to each chapter’s newly elected officers.

Attendees receive training in foundational skills like strategic planning, goal setting, and leadership which help build success for both our chapters and young men. In 2013, MYLC was attended by 565 men, one of the largest gatherings of Sigma Pi men in the Fraternity’s 116-year history.

Chapter Improvements From Chapter Educational Funds (“CEFs”) established by the alumni of individual chapters, the Foundation funded grants for educational improvements to chapter houses. For example, with the migration of course materials and even projects to online forums, the chapter at the University of Georgia found its aging WIFI network inadequate. The Foundation provided a grant from that chapter’s CEF allowing for a complete replacement of its existing network with a modern system capable of handling a substantial higher volume of data traffic.

“ It was an amazing surprise to receive the scholarship. It validated all the hard work I had put in at UCLA and strengthened my bond to Sigma Pi. I even wrote about the honor in one of my medical school application essays as the most meaningful award I had ever received. Receiving the award encouraged me to give back to others, just as alumni before me have. As a Sigma Pi alumnus, I am trying to give back to Upsilon in every capacity I can by mentoring the younger students, helping them through the pre-med volunteering experiences and application process.”

Lifetime Giving Lifetime Giving levels recognize our most loyal supporters based upon cumulative lifetime giving of at least $5,000.

Radiant Triangle Society

Old Vincennes Society

Named after the Fraternity’s most sacred symbol, the Radiant Triangle Society is reserved for Sigma Pi’s most generous supporters whose lifetime gifts total $500,000 or more.

Named after the birthplace of Sigma Pi, the Old Vincennes Society recognizes those whose lifetime gifts to Sigma Pi total $25,000 or more.

Coming to Long Beach State straight out of high school, Andy quickly found himself to be a small fish in a big pond of over 30,000 students. Shy and not knowing many people, he decided to go through recruitment and joined Sigma Pi. Little did he know at the time how impactful this fraternal organization would become in his life. He credits Sigma Pi for building his confidence, enhancing his leadership skills and giving him the courage for public speaking—as one of the many reasons he gives back and is a supporter of the Educational Foundation. His hope is for today’s undergraduate men to have the same enriching and rewarding experiences he gained by joining Sigma Pi. Sigma Pi still plays an important role in his life today, as his business partner was a pledge brother. They met through Sigma Pi, were roommates during college and have remained close friends.

Planned Giving Spotlight E. Andrew Morris Gamma-Upsilon (Murray State) ’70

After I graduated from Murray State University, I have always believed in Sigma Pi and recognized the benefits of being a member.

My best friends are members of our fraternity, and over the past 40 years I have gained new friendships through my continued involvement with the young men who have led our chapters. The fraternity has changed my attitudes about my fellow man, from being in an all white fraternity in the 60’s, to working with a more diverse culture in the chapters today. I am glad the world is changing!

Sigma Pi was one of the first national chapters to take the lead in 1964, by changing the constitution of the fraternity to accept ALL men who can contribute and learn what true brotherhood means.

This past August it was time for my wife and me to make our will and include the people and things that have made our lives enjoyable over the years, and Sigma Pi was high on that list! I know how important it is to be a volunteer working with the local chapters, for the leadership programs that we provide are the most important education we can give to the young leaders of today. Leadership is not taught in the classroom; it is developed by being part of an organization on campus.

Every gift is important to our great future, and with support from the alumni, there is no limit to where Sigma Pi can grow! The generations of students who follow can benefit from the programs and scholarships that we can provide by giving to the Sigma Pi Educational Foundation. YOU have the chance to make an impact through the power of participation, and you WILL make a difference!

The first line you learned in the Creed when pledging was “I believe in Sigma Pi”—I hope you still do!
